‘I held her afloat with all my strength’: British mother saves baby from drowning on superyacht

A mother has told of how she kept her one-year-old daughter alive in the sea after Mike Lynch’s yacht sank off the coast of Sicily.

Charlotte Golunski, 38, a senior associate at Invoke, Mr Lynch’s venture capital firm, fought to prevent her child, Sofia, from drowning.

The Oxford graduate was among guests on board the Bayesian to celebrate Mr Lynch’s acquittal in an $11 billion (£8.5 billion) fraud case in June.

On Sunday at about 5am, the superyacht started to sink after being hit by a tornado.

As the screams of passengers and crew broke out all around her as they were thrown into the water, Ms Golunksi kept her grip on her baby to stop her from slipping beneath the waves.

Ms Golunksi, along with her daughter, were taken to Cristina’s paediatric hospital in Palermo.

She told La Republicca, the Italian newspaper: “I held her afloat with all my strength, my arms stretched upwards to keep her from drowning.

“It was all dark. In the water I couldn’t keep my eyes open. I screamed for help but all I could hear around me was the screams of others.”

Ms Golunski told Giornale Di Sicilia: “For two seconds I lost the baby in the sea, then I immediately held her again in the fury of the waves. I held her tightly, tightly to me, while the sea was raging. So many were screaming. Fortunately, the lifeboat inflated and 11 of us managed to get on it.”

Speaking from the hospital, she said she “can still hear her little girl crying in her ears as they floated in the waves and their holiday sailing boat sank”. She said she was amazed that the child, who had just turned one, had emerged from the water unscathed.

Ms Golunski reportedly suffered “a graze on her chest that required a few stitches”. 

She reportedly phoned her husband, James Emsley, who was being treated for bruises to his limbs and chest at Civico hospital in Palermo.

According to la Republicca, as soon as she phoned her partner he asked: “How is the little girl? Is she there with you?” 

They were all due to be discharged from hospital on Monday afternoon and will be reunited at a hotel in the Sicilian capital.

Dr Domenico Cipolla, head of the emergency room at the children’s hospital, said: “She [Charlotte] told me that while they were sleeping, at a certain point the yacht overturned due to the tornado and they found themselves in the water.

“Some of them immediately managed to get on to the lifeboat. And some, evidently, didn’t make it.

“She told me that she was in the water for no more than two or three seconds, and she managed to save the baby, to keep her arms up, and then, with the others, they were able to get on the lifeboat, and then, I think, they were rescued by the coast guard.

“They are all in good condition. We managed to get the parents to talk on the phone. All the doctors and nurses were all very moved, also because the little girl is fine, the prognosis is good and we are carrying out tests just to be careful.”

Father of rescued lawyer claims mast smashed into hull

The father of a lawyer who survived the sinking of Mike Lynch’s superyacht confirmed that the trip was intended as a celebration for the businessman’s recent court victory.

Lin Ronald’s daughter, Ayla Ronald, 36, a senior associate at Clifford Chance, was on board the yacht with Matthew Fletcher, her partner.

Speaking to The Telegraph, Mr Ronald said: “I have texted with my daughter and she hasn’t given me any updates about missing personnel or saved personnel. She has only said to me that there are deaths, and she and her partner are alive.

“Ayla is a lawyer who is part of the legal team that were invited to go sailing as a result of the success in the recent United States court case.

“The only other information I’ve got is that Ayla’s phone is apparently the only one that’s had a battery, and so she’s been acting in some fashion as a co-ordinator with the medics.”

Mr Ronald confirmed that the superyacht had one of the tallest aluminium masts in the world when it was launched.

“At the time that it was launched I think that was true,” he said, adding: “It is still fairly tall. It is apparently the tallest swoop mast. It was certainly a noticeable feature of the boat. It was well-known in the industry to be very, very tall.”

Mr Ronald said that the Italian boatyard which built the vessel was the Tuscany -based Perini Navi which specialises in building large yachts and confirmed that it was his understanding that Mike Lynch owned the 184ft boat.

Mr Ronald has no direct knowledge about the mast failing in the high winds, which he described as a whirlwind. He said it was his understanding that as the mast fell down it “had the effect of capsizing the actual hull of the boat”.

“I believe there was another boat that was in the vicinity that took at least some of them [the survivors], and I did see a photo of a liferaft, but I am not sure if that was used.”

Mr Ronald told The Telegraph that his daughter was a keen sailor.

“She just passed her captain’s ticket a few months ago in Greece . She’s not an active sailor, but she loves it.

“She was brought up on a yacht. I was a cruising sailor and she was almost born on a yacht in Cooktown in Australia. We just managed to get her mother off to hospital just moments before the birth.”

The family spent years sailing around South East Asia and Ms Ronald attended school in  Malaysia.

Lynch’s wife among those rescued

Angela Bacares, 57, Mr Lynch’s wife, was among the 15 people rescued from the 56m superyacht, which she is reported to have owned.

She told doctors that her husband and 18-year-old daughter were missing, according to reports in Italian media.

La Repubblica said Ms Bacares was using a wheelchair after suffering abrasions on her feet during the sinking. She has bandages on other parts of her body.

The newspaper said that she told doctors that at 4am the boat tilted and she and her husband woke up.

At first they were not worried but then there was a scene of confusion as glass shattered.

It began with a meeting on a yacht off the coast of Cannes in the summer of 2009. The newly-elected prime minister of Malaysia was aboard at the invitation of businessman Jho Low and Saudi-Swiss businessman Tarek Obaid . The men had gathered to explore deals for Malaysia ’s new economic development fund, 1MDB.

Fifteen years later, the prime minister is in a Malaysian prison serving time for corruption. Low, the alleged mastermind behind the $4.5 billion defrauding of 1MDB , remains at large. Australia caps international student numbers amid discontent over housing

Education minister says enrolments to be limited to 270,000 in 2025 in bid to create ‘a better and a fairer system’.

Australia has announced a cap on the number of international students amid growing public discontent over rising housing costs.

Education Minister Jason Clare said on Tuesday that enrolments at publicly funded universities and vocational institutions would be limited to 270,000 in 2025 as part of efforts to create “a better and a fairer system”.

“What this means is next year there will be about the same number of international students starting a course here as there were before the pandemic,” Clare said at a news conference.

“There’ll be more in our universities and there’ll be fewer in our private vocational providers.”

Clare said the number of international students enrolled at universities was about 10 percent higher than before the COVID-19 pandemic, while enrolments at private vocational and training providers were up about 50 percent.

“Students are back but so are the shonks, people who are seeking to exploit this industry to make a quick buck,” Clare said, using an Australian slang term for a person involved in dishonest or suspicious activities.

The government’s announcement comes after Australia in February saw the number of international students top 700,000 for the first time, helping drive net migration to record levels.

Net overseas migration hit an all-time high of 548,800 in the year to September 2023, a 60 percent rise compared with the previous year.

The record influx has stoked public concerns about soaring housing costs.

Australia’s property prices have soared more than 40 percent nationwide since the start of the pandemic, with the median house in Sydney now valued at $965,000.

In an Essential Research poll released on Tuesday, 69 percent of respondents said migration was having a negative effect on house prices.

The proportion of respondents who said migration was “generally negative” for Australia – 42 percent – was up eight points compared with November 2023.

In an Essential Research poll published in May, about half of migrants and refugees said they felt they were being unfairly blamed for the unaffordability of housing.

Education is Australia’s fourth-biggest export industry after iron ore, gas and coal, contributing 36.4 billion Australian dollars ( $24.7bn) to the economy in the 2022-2023 financial year.

Tertiary education peak body Universities Australia criticised the enrolment cap, accusing the government of applying the “handbrake” to a crucial industry.

“International student fees help drive Australia’s economy and support universities to operate, making up a shortfall in government funding for research, teaching and campus infrastructure,” Universities Australia Chair David Lloyd said in a statement on Tuesday.

“Every dollar from overseas students is reinvested back into Australia’s universities. Having fewer students here will only widen the funding gap at a time universities need greater support.”

ASYA is a luxurious 153-foot (47m) displacement motor yacht, constructed by Heesen Yachts and delivered in 2015. ASYA boasts a sophisticated exterior design by Frank Laupman from Omega Architects and a first-class reputation for charters.

This superyacht’s style combines traditional elegance with contemporary lines that compliment her sophisticated interior, designed by Bannenberg & Rowell.

Charter yacht ASYA can comfortably accommodate up to 12 guests in five luxurious staterooms. Each stateroom is inviting with its warm color palette and plush beds. The yacht’s full-beam master suite is located on the main deck and features an en-suite bathroom with a bathtub and separate shower, a walk-in wardrobe and a study. Further guest staterooms are located on the lower deck. They include two double cabins and two twin cabins with Pullmans. Each stateroom is complete with its own en-suite facility. ASYA’s crew are accommodated towards the bow, and their quarters feature a separate crew mess and access stairway. While aboard the crew will ensure guests have the utmost privacy and first-class service.

ASYA’s symmetrically styled main salon is subtly divided into three impressive and different living areas. Within this is a formal dining space with a large Makassar ebony topped dining table that can seat up to 12 guests, a lounge area with a games table, cinema setup and a concealed bar and wine room.

The exterior spaces of superyacht ASYA provide the perfect family environment with a large aft lounging area, an upper deck terrace featuring alfresco dining space, and a sundeck. The sundeck is complete with a Jacuzzi, fully equipped bar and sunpads. All the yacht’s deck areas are protected by steel and glass barriers providing a safe environment for children.

ASYA is equipped with a fantastic selection of tenders and water toys, which can be enjoyed from the yacht’s fantastic beach club.

ASYA yacht charter is a 47-meter steel and aluminium full-displacement superyacht, launched in 2015. Since then, she earned a reputation as being a reliable vessel with a hard-working and dedicated crew.

ASYA yacht charter ensures redundancy of all electrical and plumbing installations, meaning that if one should encounter a problem, there is a second and third backup system, ready to go; guests are usually totally unaware of any problems that arise and are momentarily resolved. All of this comes to the conclusion that ASYA`s quality is long-lasting, and her maintenance is easy and economical. If that does not spell “charter-friendly” it is hard to find a yacht that does.

The Dutch quality in ASYA`s design reflects another characteristic, easily forgettable, but crucial if you want your charter vacation to be a cut above all the other luxury services provided on land. All the crew on ASYA sleeps in bigger and more comfortable beds and cabins.

Stepping aboard ASYA yacht charter, one can immediately notice the size of her main deck aft alfresco area, wide enough to host a dancing competition. Here, the alfresco dining option consists of an absolutely huge U-shaped sofa arrangement, surrounding the dining table and leaving room for movable dining chairs on one end.

Pass the dining area and into the foyer, guests can stop in the day head located next to the galley, or continue into the private corridor/office of the Master suite.

Being absolutely huge, the master boasts an enormous ensuite with a jacuzzi tub and a big walk-in closet. Classical and conservative lines point out ASYA`s Dutch heritage, as guests will feel the quality on every level of the cabin.

Three big windows illuminate the cabin and the vanity table is placed directly beneath them, enabling guests to read a book, fix their makeup or do some unexpected work. YACHT UPPER DECK

The upper deck can be reached by a staircase located on the main deck aft, or by the staircase in the main foyer. The aft features an incredible lounge area that overlooks the stern and the panorama that ASYA leaves behind her, as she rushes into the horizon.

The alfresco lounge area on the upper deck is equipped with everything needed for a fantastic time spent observing the colours of the fantastic Croatian Adriatic. You can also ask your crew to utilize this space to serve a more versatile purpose, like an improvised yacht gym, or a space to practice yoga, hold dance competitions or themed parties and do anything your heart would desire.

Stepping into the interior of the upper deck, the skylounge features a circular sitting option in the form of wonderful sofas and a 2-piece circular table. An informal atmosphere enables guests to sit back and relax. This area can also be customized to provide a unique cinema experience, with a bar nearby, providing all the necessary snacks and beverages needed for a perfect movie night.

Moving towards the bridge, a games table provides a perfect opportunity to host a poker tournament or a game of wits, in the form of chess. Stepping out of the skylounge, guests find themselves in the foyer, with the helm station located towards the bow and another day head located to port.

YACHT SUNDECK

The sun deck boasts an absolutely huge circular-shaped sofa that follows the entire length of the sun deck stern thus creating a fantastic sitting arrangement for at least 10 guests. This is done by separating the circularity of the sofa with small tables, dividing the sitting area for 2 people per table.

Smartly designed, the circular sofa enables a ton of space on the sundeck, without the need of having additional tables or surfaces that would only use up space. Yet another dining table to starboard adds to the alfresco dining versatility of ASYA yacht charter, with options of dining on all three of her decks.

To port is a fully equipped wet bar with bar stools, perfect for relaxing with after-dinner drinks and some light music. Forward are movable sun loungers, for those sun lovers in need of a perfect bronze tan.

And last but not least, a magnificently-placed jacuzzi, located at the tip of the sundeck, protected by a semi-flybridge windshield and surrounded by spacious and comfortable sunbeds. This jacuzzi will be the main focal point for relaxation, either with candlelight under the starry sky or in the afternoon with a glass of champagne and your favourite book.

YACHT LOWER DECK

The lower deck consists of 4 cabins: 2 double cabins and 2 twin cabins, each of which has its own separate entrance in the hallway that is connected with the staircase that goes all the way through the upper deck sky lounge.

All the cabins on ASYA`s lower deck are furnished and decorated differently so that every cabin gives out a novel impression to guests. ASYA`s exterior is shaped to match a traditional profile, but this is not to be said about her interior. With everything being so well-appointed and symmetric, guests always know where they are and where they need to go; one can hardly lose their way when moving between decks.

The all-around symmetry is the hallmark of Dutch design in general, with an added bonus of orange tulips, that can be found in each vase around the lower deck cabins, giving homage to ASYA`s Dutch heritage. The berths in each cabin are placed to provide the maximum distance from one another, passively adding to the soundproofing of the entire lower deck, which is sublime.
