Southern Spars

FINEST CARBON MASTS

A mast is one of the most dynamic and complex components of a yacht, with the job of transferring the power generated by the wind and sails into the yacht. It must withstand a multitude of ever-changing forces, including torsion, bend and compression. Yet it must maintain the perfect combination of stiffness and flexibility to maximize performance of the sail plan.

At Southern Spars we are spurred on by two key drivers; performance and reliability. The foundations of our success in these areas are sound principles of design and manufacture, combined with a detailed understanding of our customers’ requirements.

At Southern Spars, we build packages for everything from mega yachts, to race yachts and Olympic dinghies. Developments made in one area are disseminated through all of our teams, meaning the rate of progression throughout the company is extremely high.

WE BUILD MASTS FOR…

Grand prix / racing, classic cruiser.

aglaia superyacht mast by southern spars

Phenomenal strength is needed in the mast and  rigging  to support a superyacht’s immense sail plan. The yacht’s dimensions must be balanced with the mast and boom for both aesthetics and engineering capabilities. Modern superyacht spars have added functionality like furling mainsails, and rafts of electronic, navigation and communications components.

As superyacht owners seek ever-larger and more performance-oriented yachts,  designs  draw extensively on developments made in the Grand Prix arena. Southern Spars’  ECsix continuous carbon fibre rigging  is now used in most superyacht projects.  Thin ply carbon fibre  for mast construction is also beginning to cross over the race/luxury boundary.

The many international design awards won by superyachts carrying Southern Spars’ packages highlights the vital role that our team plays in creating world-leading superyachts.

vo65 - southern spars performance masts

With almost universal domination of the world’s elite inshore, offshore and around the world events; Southern Spars’ race results speak for themselves.

Our dedication to performance and  reliability  makes us the obvious choice for racing yachts that want the edge over their competitors with a product that they can trust. Throughout the  design process , we integrate the sail maker’s design into our own so that the spars and sails work as one cohesive unit. This enables racers to extract maximum performance and trust that the mast will get them across the finish line.

Southern Spars rigs are made from  thin ply carbon fibre , which allows us to  design  tubes lighter and stronger than our competition, while achieving a more accurate bend profile.

ac50 - southern spars masts

The spirit of multihull yachts is generally more radical, not conforming to the limits imposed on monohulls. Catamarans and trimarans often seek something different and more exciting – a spirit embraced by Southern Spars.

Multihulls allow many different rig and  rigging  configurations, which allows Southern Spars to  design  innovative and often unique solutions to aid the yacht’s performance.

We work together with the yacht’s designer and sailmaker to ensure the whole yacht works together to embody the essence of multihull sailing – the perfect combination of comfort, space and effortless speed.

Southern Spars’  carbon technology  allows us to build more than just masts. We produce many of the carbon components in a multihull including the crossbeams, spine, and bowsprit for everything from foiling AC72s to multihull superyachts.

j class southern spars rig

One of the best ways to bring new life to an older vessel is to upgrade the spar package. Doing so will significantly increase its performance, safety and  ease of operation  making sailing more enjoyable and therefore done more often.

Classic yachts are great to look at, but can be difficult to sail. Upgrading to a carbon mast from Southern Spars will make an older yacht sail like new one, with a more efficient sail plan and improved righting moment. Southern Spars’ attention to detail, from  design  through  manufacture  to paint and final fit out mean that all of this can be done without compromising any of the cosmetic attributes or traditional feel of your yacht.

Southern Spars have built new carbon fibre masts for single, double and triple masted classic yachts, cutting significant amounts of weight and  improving the reliability  of a rig package.

Application

Racing Sailboats: The lightweight and strong nature of carbon fiber makes it ideal for use in racing sailboats. It helps to reduce the overall weight of the boat, allowing for faster speeds and improved maneuverability.

Cruising Sailboats: Carbon fiber masts are also commonly used in cruising sailboats. They provide the necessary strength and durability required for long-distance sailing while still maintaining a lightweight design.

Catamarans: Due to their wider beam and increased stability, catamaran sailboats often require larger and stronger masts. Carbon fiber is an excellent material for this application as it can withstand the additional stresses and strains.

High-Performance Yachts: For luxury yachts that prioritize speed and performance, carbon fiber masts offer significant advantages. They help to reduce weight and increase stiffness, resulting in improved handling and faster speeds.

Inflatable Boats: Carbon fiber masts can also be used in inflatable boats, providing the necessary support and stability without adding excessive weight. This is particularly important in recreational boats where ease of transport and storage are important factors.

carbon fiber sailing boat mast

Lightweight:

Carbon fiber is much lighter than aluminum or steel, which means that carbon fiber masts can significantly reduce the overall weight of a sailing boat. This reduction in weight can lead to improved performance, including faster speeds and better maneuverability.

High strength-to-weight ratio:

Carbon fiber has a high strength-to-weight ratio, meaning that it can be incredibly strong while still being lightweight. This makes carbon fiber masts ideal for sailboats that need to withstand heavy loads and stresses, such as racing boats or high-performance yachts.

Corrosion resistance:

Unlike aluminum or steel masts, carbon fiber masts are resistant to corrosion. This means that they require less maintenance and have a longer lifespan than traditional masts.

Aesthetics:

Carbon fiber masts have a sleek, modern appearance that many sailors find attractive. They can also be customized with different colors and finishes to match the rest of your boat’s decor.

Cost-Effective:

While carbon fiber masts may be more expensive than aluminum or steel masts initially, they can actually be more cost-effective in the long run. This is because they require less maintenance and have a longer lifespan, meaning you won’t need to replace them as often.

BOOMS WITH A STRONG PROFILE

BOOMS WITH A STRONG PROFILE

Seldén booms have a wealth of sophisticated features and can be equipped with a variety of reefing systems to suit different boats and the needs of different sailors. The booms can be fitted for traditional slab reefing or Single Line Reef, or be used for furling masts. The boom extrusions are relatively deep in relation to their width, allowing a lighter extrusion with high resistance to vertical bending. This makes them perfect for use with modern, stiff sailcloth and efficient Rodkicker rigid vangs.

WHY YOU NEED A NEW BOOM

WHY YOU NEED A NEW BOOM

The most common upgrade is to a Single Line Boom. Remain in the cockpit and pull one line to reef your sail and you will prevent adventurous maneuvers at the mast. It’s quick, safe, easy to handle and convenient.

It’s full of potentials. A new boom is prepared for Rodkicker, Lazy jack sliders, easy installation of a stack-pack system and boom light that will lighten up your cockpit at night.

MAKE IT HAPPEN – IT’S EASY

To decide what you need, here are a few useful steps:

  • Check if your boat is listed here . If it is you will know what size boom we recommend and its part number.
  • Find out how stiff your boat is by calculating the Righting Moment (RM) at 30° heel. This is done with our calculator .

Click on technical information below and use the dimensioning table for Masthead rigged boats or Fractional.

  • You need to know the RM, the E-measurement and the Y-measurement to make your choice and all those measurements are explained in this area.
  • Compare the forward end of the Seldén boom to the dimensions of the boom bracket on your mast. Clevis pin dimensions and width and depth of the forward end.

Or… just ask a Seldén dealer to figure it all out.

LIGHT BOOMS IN CARBON FIBRE

LIGHT BOOMS IN CARBON FIBRE

Seldén supply carbon booms that harmonise with its carbon mast range. Carbon booms offer weight savings of up to 35% compared to aluminium. This means that boom weight on a typical 35 ft boat is reduced from 30 kg to just 20 kg.

A lighter boom makes gybing less dramatic, as the boom has less momentum. This has a positive effect on the whole boat, especially with regard to the service life of the mainsheet attachment.

A lighter boom also reduces the tendency of the boat to roll when sailing downwind and it improves the effect of the Rodkickers’ gas spring. The section modulus of a carbon boom is twice as high as that of an aluminium boom with the same weight per meter. A stiff boom makes for improved trim and thus higher boat speed.

Boats that sail IRC, and which are already fitted with a carbon mast, suffer no further rating penalty by up-grading to a carbon boom.

In order to reduce weight, while still providing sheaves for single line reefing, we have made the inboard end fitting as short as possible. The outboard end, which is integrated into the carbon section, is finished with a carbon cover plate.

The mainsheet block is attached using a Dyneema® strop that passes through an aramid tube in the boom. Stainless steel bushings at either end of the tube prevent wear, while local carbon reinforcement provides the extra strength required. Booms with “German” split mainsheet systems have fastening positions for blocks at the inboard end, and two webbing strops to hold up the mainsheet.

The carbon booms feature hand laid local reinforcement in the vang attachment area.

Carbon booms can be supplied ready for conventional slab or single line reefing. Clutches can be integrated into the inboard end if you do not wish to lead the reef lines to the cockpit.

The standard Seldén outhaul system features a Dyneema® outhaul line for leading back to a winch in the cockpit. As an alternative, an internal cascade system with up to 20:1 purchase can be used and operated by hand from the cockpit or by a crew member hiking on the rail.

BOOMS FOR DINGHIES

BOOMS FOR DINGHIES

Seldén dinghy booms have been designed to offer the ultimate in stiffness, weight and functionality. From single-line reefing systems to high-purchase internal outhaul systems, Seldén booms can be equipped with a range of sophisticated features that will make your sailing easier, faster and more convenient. Class rules are closely studied to push performance to the limit. For example, the Olympus boom section optimises the 470 class rules to give the lightest and stiffest boom the class rules allow.

All sections are optimised for high resistance against vertical bending and come with an integral sail track and lower in-boom track for mainsheet and kicking strap attachments.

sailboat-mast

A sailboat mast is a roughly cylindrical, vertical spar which supports the vessel's sails.

Most of these masts are made of aluminum, with standard sections. Most racing sailboats use fractional rigs, in which the headsail reaches 7/8ths or 9/10ths of the way up the mast, which is thinner at the top. Carbon masts reduce weight aloft, increasing vessel stability and stiffening the sails under load. Some masts are equipped with spreaders to tension the shrouds and absorb some of the mast flex.

In the case of a production boat, choice will depend on make and model. For a one-off without a designer's sail plan, the characteristics of the mast step, the vessel's length and displacement, the presence or absence of backstays and/or running backstays and the number and location of chainplates will be determinant. If the mast is stepped on deck instead of on the keel, a photo of the step should prove useful to the mast manufacturer. Those who race often should consider a carbon mast for improved performance.

  • How long ago did you make the change?
  • What did it cost?
  • From whom did you source your rig?
  • What were the considerations/tradeoffs you had to make?
  • Why did you make the choice you made?
  • How did you determine this number?
  • Pitch and roll?
  • If you added height, did you work with a sail loft to determine how to cut the new sails to maintain the location of the CE?
  • Have there been any unwanted performance issues with the new rig?
  • Would you do it again?

Are you interested in a CF mast for a particular size or kind of boat? Or just general information? I just read an article on this a few days ago, if I can remember where it was I'll post it.

We made the switch about 6 years ago. Went from an aluminum furling mast which we didn’t like for numerous reasons to a boom furler and carbon mast. The performance difference is startling! i don’t recall &&& which entailed the mast, boom, new rigging and new sails but suspect those are dependent on boat size which probably can’t be extrapolated. the weight aloft savings was substantial. I can only subjectively compare before/after sailing characteristics other than to say it depends on how you use your boat. If we sailed only locally, I wouldn’t recommend the switch. The only thing I don’t like about the new mast is it makes it much more difficult without steps to ascend the mast. Otherwise, we are very happy.

The Nor’Sea is a well designed small cruising boat. A Lyle Hess design. Originally he designed wood boats. I loved he’s philosophy. Lyle Hess "any boat that points her bow out to sea should be designed so that the crew need not worry about a safe return--no matter what tricks the weather may play” He had a hand in the design of the Montgomery boats. The 15 was my first pocket cruiser. Tough little boat. True to the Hess philosophy. A NorSea would serve you well. Bob Perry has been recently designing boats with CF masts and hulls. There is a builder/shop in Anacortes WA that has developed molds and produced some of his designs. They might be helpful. I’ll see if I can find a link for you.

I should imagine it would seriously change the weight aloft to keel ratio considerably. If any of you have been moored in the water without a mast, I'm sure you understand. The few crew I've talked to on mega-sailing yachts with carbon fiber/line rigging have mentioned around 2k # difference aloft. Perhaps it makes little noticeable difference on big boats like those, but without a marine architect I can't see it as a favorable improvement on any boat.

My boating buddy built a 29' sloop with a carbon fiber mast and gaff rig. The mast is set in a tabernacle. The gaff rig allows for a shorter mast without having a smaller mainsail. He can raise and lower the mast by himself with the aid of a tripod.

Your best bet might be to find a carbon mast already mounted on a boat then buy that boat.

Barnacle Bill

Had two J/32's sailing side by side. One with an aluminum mast - the other with a a carbon rig. The carbon rig was able to carry the larger headsails much further into higher wind ranges. The other had to shorten sail. I think I remember the carbon rig eliminated something like 100 lbs aloft. It was a hefty price. I believe Hall Spars made that one. Selden Mast makes carbon rigs as well.

NEW Dragonfly 36 Videos

The new DRAGONFLY 36 Performance Cruiser, a cutting-edge sailing trimaran where innovative design seamlessly integrates with exceptional functionality, all specifically engineered for those who crave adventure on the open seas. This remarkable cruiser/racer has been meticulously crafted for both seasoned sailors and adventurous families, standing out with its pioneering wave-piercing main hull and float design. This unique feature not only enhances the DRAGONFLY 36's aesthetics but also significantly boosts its performance by more buoyancy in the bow and also allowing for more smooth, safe and efficient sailing, even when navigating through choppy waters or adverse weather conditions.

The unique and revolutionary DRAGONFLY SWING WING system – introduced 35 years ago – reduces the 8.12 m beam to only 3.7 m in seconds, using no tools. The DRAGONFLY 36 introduces for the first time an all-composite high-tech construction, making the DRAGONFLY SWING WING system simpler, lighter, stronger and easier to maintain.

The DRAGONFLY 36 steps into a new era in construction and design at Quorning Boats in Denmark, where more composite engineering is implemented in the structural design. Many fine element calculations backed up with physical strength tests to ensure a stronger and homogeneous construction by also using more infusion and complex tooling for the composite parts. All this to optimize production, weight, strength, lifetime and maintenance and at the end also for lower costs. The DRAGONFLY 36 has been over 2 years in development and is a high tech quality construction in all details.

The DRAGONFLY 36 is engineered to excel in a variety of sailing scenarios, from spirited weekends on the water to long-distance offshore cruising. With its lightweight construction and expertly calibrated sail plan, this cruiser is designed for easy handling—making shorthanded sailing accessible and enjoyable. Whether you’re a solo sailor, a couple, or a family of four, the DRAGONFLY 36 simplifies the sailing process, allowing you to focus on the thrill of the adventure rather than the complexities of handling.

The DRAGONFLY 36 will be available in two versions, both with carbon masts. The TOURING version with self-tacking jib system and the PERFORMANCE version with a taller rig and larger overlapping furling headsail.

Step aboard and immerse yourself in the spacious cockpit, an inviting area designed for relaxation, social interaction, and enjoying the breath-taking views. Featuring comfortable seating with all lines and sail-handling-gear lead towards the twin helm wheels, without interrupting the people relaxing in front. The cockpit becomes a centerpiece for shared laughter and memorable experiences as you sail together with family and friends.

The modern, stylish standard ash (optional elm) interior has been carefully thought out to incorporate both comfort and practicality, with features like a fully equipped galley, multifunctional living spaces, and extensive natural light flooding through the boat. The design encourages a sense of togetherness, whether you’re preparing a meal or sharing a sunset view over a glass of your favorite beverage.

The onboard experience is enhanced by storage solutions and an ergonomic layout, allowing for a clutter-free environment. This attention to detail extends to the interior finishes, where high-quality materials meet aesthetics, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere that makes you feel at home, no matter where your journey takes you.

Join the next generation of sailors with the DRAGONFLY 36 Performance Cruiser. Whether embarking on a spontaneous day sail or planning an exhilarating long distance voyage, this sailing Trimaran redefines the standard for performance cruising, empowering you to explore the beauty of the open water with confidence, comfort, and unparalleled style. Experience a sailing lifestyle that goes beyond mere transportation, as each moment aboard the DRAGONFLY 36 becomes a cherished memory waiting to be created.

Dragonfly 36 touring and -performance.

To inform and illustrate recommended service, maintenance, and refitting on an older Dragonfly, we have drawn this general information sheet. Rough elements, like strong winds and wave conditions, strong saltwater and UV do have some impact on the boat after a long sailing life.

We strongly recommend servicing and changing vital parts on your boat according to our recommendations.

This information overrules any former information you may have, as the following is based on updated knowledge.

Exchange intervals of structural parts:

  • Waterstays - every maximum 10 years and or by 25.000 NM. Made in special Dyeform, Python and or Compacted Strand cable quality.
  • Side stays and forestay cables – every maximum 10 years or 20.000 NM. Made in Dyeform, Python and or Compacted Strand cable quality.
  • Fiber Side stay cables (optional) to be replaced after 7 years and or max 20.000 NM.
  • Diamond stays on the mast should be changed after 15 years at the latest, or, by max 25.000 NM. Made in Dyeform, Python and or Compacted Strand cable quality.
  • Beam stop cable to forward, outside beam under trampoline – every maximum 10 years.
  • Steering cables – every maximum 7 years and or by 15.000 NM. Regular visual control is strongly recommended and especially before planning longer trips.

The above listing of exchange intervals is the recommendations from the Dragonfly yard, and it is not an extension of the 2-year warranty.

Halyards and Dyneema lines need regularly visual check for wear and tear.

From January 2024 we engrave the Dragonfly logo including a production year, on all rigging terminals on structural wiring such as waterstays, side stays and diamond cables, to make it easier for you as a customer to follow the above recommended exchange intervals.

Always check very carefully that you replace cables in the VERY same type of cable quality if not ordered/replaced by the Dragonfly Yard.

Visual check of all cables is still required before and when changing the rigging. We strongly recommend focusing on side stay cables, as these easily can be bend when stepping the mast. Bended side stay cables near the terminal may cause the side stay cable to break.

On all Dragonfly’s, please regularly check the forestay cable in the top by the terminal. When furling, the spinnaker or Code-0 halyard may block the forestay, which can cause failure of the forestay cable.

Trampolines:

On all Dragonfly’s, we recommend re-stitching (sewing) along the stitching/seams of the trampolines every 6-7 years (in climates with strong UV, every 5 years). Normally, our clients change their trampolines after 10-12 years use. Please note this is a recommendation and it is still always the skipper’s responsibility to regularly check the condition of the trampolines.

Float deck Teflon pad rings:

The white 5 mm Teflon pad rings on the float deck needs to be changed every 13-15 years – this is neither critical nor structural. For easy change of these pads/rings, you just bolt off the floats from the wings by the one bolt in each end of the Wing/beam.

Quick-Links:

Over many years, Quorning Boats has used the riggings links, so-called Quick-links, in the Dragonfly production quite often. When replacing these Quick-links, it is of utmost importance to purchase links of same high quality or similar products carrying same strength (working load). Many products look the same, but do NOT carry the same strength/loads. If you are not sure about this, please contact your local dealer or the Dragonfly Yard.

Caution for all painted surfaces on the boat and mast.

Painted surfaces may NOT be covered with Plastic or other non-breathable materials, as water and condensation cannot be lead away from the painted surfaces, and these are not able to dry.

When water is stuck between the Paint and a non-breathable or non-ventilated material, blisters can occur between the paint and the gelcoat or the carbon sections of the mast.

Due to these circumstances, the permanent use of Ex. Matt-Fenders (long flat fenders) cannot be recommended, as water and Condensation can also get stuck between these and the hull, and lead to blisters in the Paint.

Quorning Boats cannot be held responsible for Blisters in the paint occurred due covering the painted surfaces with non-breathable materials.

Ordering Parts:

Original spare parts can be ordered at Quorning Boats at  [email protected]

Common spare parts can be shipped within one or two weeks, whereas special parts and/or custom-made parts usually are served within 6-8 weeks.

Parts ordered at Quorning Boats Denmark, will be produced in originally designed materials. Should you choose to order from other suppliers, please check that the same kind of materials are used – especially on the waterstays and other rigging parts, where stronger special Dyeform, Python and or Compacted Strand cables are needed.

All other normal maintenance for like engine, pumps, electrical systems etc. we refer to the guidelines from the manufacturer of these specific products.

  1. Forte Carbon Fiber Products

Save Weight Aloft. A Forte carbon fiber mast weighs about half that of an aluminum mast. Weight savings aloft translates into increased righting moment and reduced pitching moment. In heavier winds, your boat will pitch less in chop. Increased righting moment means you can keep more sail up and/or sail with less crew under any heavier conditions.

  2. Masts

Furling Masts. GMT first built carbon in-mast furling rigs for a couple of Hinckley 59s back in 1990, and has since built in-mast furling rigs for a huge range of boats from 40' - 80'. Our tooling is based on the well known Hood Stowaway mast sections, with flexibility to adjust for a range of sections sizes.

  3. Masts

Seldén produce over 400 carbon masts per year as well as booms, poles and bow sprits for boats including high performance skiffs, racing keelboats, IRC race boats and some of the world's most prestigious cruising yachts. With more sailors choosing Seldén carbon spars, the pattern is obvious.

  4. Carbon Masts & Spars

Carbon Fiber masts are considerably easier to step by hand, especially while on the water, than wood masts. Car must be taken with sizing the boat at partner and step as CF masts are often smaller in their outer diameter. Price for a Carbon fiber mast ranges from $975 for a mizzen to $2,250 for a large mast. Inquire on our order form learn more.

  5. Carbon Spars

GMT has been building carbon composite sailboat spars longer than any other manufacturer. Our lead engineer has been designing carbon spars since 1990, and our lead shop technicians have been with GMT for 15 years or more. That consistency provides GMT with more experience and a unique and unmatched approach to designing and building carbon spars.

  6. Masts

As superyacht owners seek ever-larger and more performance-oriented yachts, designs draw extensively on developments made in the Grand Prix arena. Southern Spars' ECsix continuous carbon fibre rigging is now used in most superyacht projects. Thin ply carbon fibre for mast construction is also beginning to cross over the race/luxury boundary.

  11. Booms

LIGHT BOOMS IN CARBON FIBRE.

  12. Rig Solutions

Hall Spars rigs leverage the lightweight properties of carbon, resulting in a substantial weight saving.
