Fraser Yachts CEO Raphael Sauleau on Yachting’s New Normal

Raphael Sauleau has been navigating an incredibly turbulent time in the industry.

By Samantha Coles

As CEO of yacht brokerage and management company Fraser Yachts, Raphael Sauleau has been navigating an incredibly turbulent time. He speaks to Samantha Coles about how the pandemic is shaping Fraser’s plans for the future.

Raphael Sauleau, CEO of Fraser Yachts, cut a quietly confident figure speaking to us via Zoom from the garden of his home in the South of France — sitting in the sunshine, in his enviable alfresco private office. It was early summer, when lockdown restrictions were tentatively easing around the world, and we could see faint glimmers of light at the end of the Covid-19 tunnel.

His cool, collected demeanor has steered Fraser through these difficult times with a strong focus on protecting people — both employees and clients. His passion for technology has also intensified; it’s proving to be vital not just for business, but for his personal life, too. “Technology has let us work remotely, but I have also been doing a lot of sport — I use Strava, and it’s connected to my bike. My Technogym treadmill has been a fantastic help; I don’t think I would have coped otherwise!”

As the world began to lock down, Sauleau, who champions remote work already, initiated fully remote working for Fraser: “We already had a policy in place called ‘smart work’ where people work remotely a day or two a week. So it wasn’t a difficult process to initiate; in fact, we started remote work fully about 10 days before the country locked down because I could see it was coming our way.

Instead of stressing last minute we thought to just get it sorted. I am a believer in remote work — I think it is a good way to allow people to work without the stress of commuting or leaving children with nannies. I think a mix of remote and office work is a winning situation, and everyone has adapted to the new working method efficiently. Even though we had some challenges with canceling and rescheduling charters, we have been able to do so without going through the trauma of feeling unsafe.”

Perhaps the past few decades of Sauleau’s life, both professional and personal, have shaped this refreshing attitude to a work-life balance. His first foray into the world of yachting was at a young age when he would sail with his uncle. “I am from the western part of France, and from spring until the end of summer we would sail all the western coast in my uncle’s 50m [164ft] sailing boat. I’ve been around boats, and the sea, for some time.”

He went on to work with cruise lines and large shipping management companies before becoming CEO of a family office and then CEO of Fraser. “I was keen to see the other side of the fence. I had to adapt from sea life to shore life: work regular hours, being more sedentary, versus traveling around the world and having hours that are everything but regular. I had to adapt, moving from a big corporation to a private office and a private owner to Fraser.”

While Sauleau extols Fraser’s efforts during the pandemic, there has understandably been a dip in enquiries from the charter and sales sides, but yacht management has been busier than normal as clients seek guidance and advice. Sauleau has noticed that those who normally charter a yacht are now looking to purchase one, as a way to be fully in control of hiring the crew but also to manage safety and hygiene in their own way. On the charter front, Sauleau notes that enquiries are picking up and opportunities are on the horizon.

“We don’t have the normal level of business that we usually have at this time, but there are good opportunities coming our way. A lot of people are looking forward to being back at sea — there is never zero risk, but a yacht is such a confined environment. There are very few individuals onboard, including guests and crew, and we have procedures in place for sanitation and social distancing regulations.”

Before the lockdown, Sauleau notes there was a growing trend in chartering to remote destinations — a trend that will surely be even more popular in a post-lockdown landscape. “Away from the French, Italian Rivieras, people want to go to destinations where they can drop anchor and enjoy the scenery, and not be in the same area as everyone else. I think that the yacht will also become the destination. Of course you can still travel from place to place and go ashore, but people want to just get away with their loved ones and be in a place where they can stay safe.

“We have noticed that some aren’t traveling as far as they used to — Americans are not going to come to Europe, they are deciding to stay around the US. They might charter a yacht in the Caribbean, or even within the US itself — there are so many possibilities. The East Coast of the states is a great place for an Indian summer. In the brokerage world, the American market is by far the biggest in terms of boat ownership. Yachting, being on the water…it’s in their DNA. When the waterways were reopened in America, a lot of people were straight out on their boats. It is something that they were clearly craving. People just want to be on the water.”

Sauleau is steering Fraser through the pandemic / ©Thierry Ameller

There is no doubt this pandemic will have a lingering effect on the way people travel, but Sauleau reverts back to the positive aspects. He speaks about clients with jam-packed schedules who travel constantly, and have now spent the past few months with their families — he describes it as a revelation.

“One thing I always remember about working in a private office is I asked the boss, ‘why do you like yachts so much?’ He said it was the only place where he can find himself with his family, they are all together, and everybody is focused on being together. And this is something we see today — families have been separated by this pandemic. They cannot see each other, or are scared to contaminate one another. Now they see that they can travel on a yacht together. It is the best place to be with your family.”

As for the future of Fraser, a new shareholder means big plans for expansion. Sauleau reverts to his passion for technology; he believes it will be of paramount importance moving forward — for the yachting industry, and indeed the world, to adapt to a new normal.

During lockdown, Fraser conducted online viewings and continued to make sales. He is keen to take this up a notch even when restrictions are lifted, but in a subtle way. “Luxury is all about being able to serve in a very discreet manner. Some clients may disappear for a while because they are busy, and it’s important to have the right tools to keep in touch in one way or another. To still be on their radar without being intrusive…technology allows us to do that.”

Fraser Yachts opens new office in Athens

fraser yachts team

International brokerage Fraser Yachts has opened a new office in the Greek capital, Athens. The new base marks the company’s 17th office worldwide.

The new team will provide client support for sales, charter, new-build constructions, management and crew placement in Greece.

Raphael Sauleau, CEO, Fraser Yachts said: “ We already work with many Greek and Eastern Mediterranean-based clients across all of our services, whether as owners, charterers, captains or crew. But  importantly our new team in Athens now increases our ability to be with those clients exactly when they need us and more often.”

The expansion seems to have come at a perfect time. Greece is currently one of the most popular charter destinations for Fraser’s clients this year, second only to Italy. The Mediterranean nation has accounted for 18% of all charter weeks booked by its clients in 2022.

“ [Greece] offers an exceptional infrastructure for yacht owners of all size ranges and indeed for their captains and crew”, said Vassilis Fotilas, sales broker, Fraser Yachts Greece Management. “Our physical presence today, acknowledges and reinforces our place as an integral part of that infrastructure and the complete offering of support for all our clients, no matter how they enjoy their yachting.”

Sauleau added: “ I think it is befitting that in the year we are so proud to celebrate our landmark 75 years of support, guidance and service for clients worldwide, that we now open the doors to our 17th and newest location, in what is not only the birthplace of democracy but all things maritime.”

54' Irwin 1990

A Rare GemRefreshing to find a boat that is lavishly maintainedand constantly upgraded

VIEW THE 360 DEGREE VIRTUAL TOURThe Irwin 54 is one of the most popular sailing yachts over 50' ever built. Find out why

For over 20 Years, the current owner had an open check book tocontinually upgrade and lovingly care for this amazing yacht

Over 250 Irwin 52’s and 54’s were built. First introduced in 1976, The Irwin 52 quickly became the  most  popular cruising center cockpit sailboat on the market.  In 1988, the boat evolved into the Irwin 54 with a major redesign of the hull, deck and interior. “Patience“ is one of the last Irwin 54’s and possibly the best ever built.

“Patience” was ordered new by her original owner in 1989 and commissioned in 1990. The concept was to utilize the basic clever design and create a vessel of not just outstanding beauty, but also a yacht that is flawlessly executed and engineered to a standard normally seen only in larger vessels. The spectacular result is not only a "go anywhere" yacht, but also one of absolute luxury, total privacy and short-handed style.

The second owner purchased "Patience" for a two year Caribbean cruise and then sold  her to the  current owner.Current owner has owned this boat for the past 20 years!

The World’s Largest Sailing Catamaran Embarks as a Traveling Art Exhibition

It’s “anchors aweigh” for one of the world’s most unusual art exhibits.

Billed as the first floating museum of its kind, ArtExplorer—the world’s largest aluminum sailing catamaran—is bringing fine art to the masses, one European port at a time. The works onboard include a mix of new media, such as an inaugural digital exhibit on the representation of women in the Mediterranean from Nomi Daucé, curator of archaeology at the Louvre Abu Dhabi.

The yacht is also available for private charter—to the tune of more than a quarter million dollar a week—allowing wealthy art lovers to indulge in a one-of-a-kind adventure on the high seas.

For Frédéric Jousset, the French entrepreneur and philanthropist who envisioned the project, it’s a true labor of love.

“I had an epiphany. I thought, ‘You know, I love art, I love sailing, isn’t there a way to combine both passions?’ And then I started to dig and found out that around half of the world’s population lives 60 minutes from the shore. I wanted to enlarge the traditional audiences of the art world and that is where the population is,” says Jousset, co-founder of the multi-national business consultancy Webhelp, which is based in Paris.

“The other striking thing for me was that people are really fascinated by big sailing yachts. You know, before space exploration, these yachts were what adventure looked like,” he says.

ArtExplorer is the highest-profile project yet from Jousset’s Art Explora Foundation, which he founded in 2019 to promote access to art and culture. (One of France’s largest art patrons, Jousset has served as a board member for the Louvre and Beaux-Arts de Paris.)

This is Jousset’s first new-build yacht and to bring the project to life, enlisted the aid of Monaco-based Fraser Yachts, which is also handling private charters for ArtExplorer.

“We wanted to create something that was not detrimental to the environment, but we also wanted it to be stable, so we decided to go with a catamaran, which can go pretty much anywhere,” Jousset says. “You can spend a lot of money and then be very disappointed by the result because it takes forever, it’s massively more expensive than you thought, or the practicality is not there. I was the right part of the brain—the emotional one—and Fraser was the left.”

The weekly charter rate for the low season starts at approximately €240,000 (US$263,000), plus additional expenses. Come high season, those starting rates shoot up to €290,000 (US$318,000) per week. Charter rates for Fraser’s fleet—which includes vessels of various sizes, from 92 to 328 feet—range from €50,000 (US$55,000) to €1.4 million (US$1.54 million) per week, plus additional costs.

The 154-foot yacht was custom-built by the pioneering Italian company Perini Navi, with interior and exterior designs by Axel de Beaufort, design and engineering director for Hermès Horizons (a bespoke division of the French fashion house), and naval architect Guillaume Verdier, renowned for his past work with Team New Zealand for the America’s Cup.

An engineering marvel with a 180-foot mast and a fully automated, all-carbon sail plan that can be operated by a single person, ArtExplorer can reach 10 knots, even in low wind conditions. The 56-foot beam offers almost 7,500 square feet of interior space, and the three-foot-wide staircase means that thousands of visitors can be comfortably accommodated each day. (As a floating gallery, the overall capacity is 2,000.)

“ArtExplorer is certainly one of the challenges that we’ve enjoyed taking on,” says Laurent Bredy, Fraser’s head of refit and new build project management.

“Managing the construction of the largest sailing yacht catamaran in the world—and what’s more, a museum—is indeed something you don’t do every day.”

There are six staterooms on the starboard side that can accommodate up to 12 guests, with accommodations for nine crew on the portside. (This includes the yacht’s chef, who was trained by the Michelin-starred legend Alain Ducasse.)

ArtExplorer also is committed to sustainability. Around 700 square feet of solar panels were installed on the deckhouse roof, producing 200 kilowatts of energy daily, and all exhaust gases were fitted with catalytic filters to decrease emissions and particulate matter. Powered by twin C7 Caterpillar diesel engines, the system is backed up by a lithium-battery bank that delivers six hours of silent cruising. All maneuvers in and out of harbor, as well as in protected areas, are conducted in full electric mode.

When in charter mode, the main salon and dining area provide a large open-plan space for socializing, and there’s also a library and cocktail bar. Four large skylights fill the interior with natural light while providing views of the entire 180-foot mast.

“The boat is drawing attention from people who like sailing yachts as well as clients and owners who want to experience holidays on the largest sailing catamaran in the world. This first year is already a success, and there is no more room in her schedule for 2024,” says Quentin Bourgeois, ArtExplorer’s charter manager.

According to Jousset, a key feature when designing the project was to ensure that ArtExplorer’s exhibitions—both on and off the boat—are free for all to enjoy. To make it work, making the yacht available for private charters helps support the philanthropic endeavor.

In late March, the public got its first chance to board and experience the vessel, as more than 21,000 participants engaged with works from 95 artists in Malta. Next up was a nearly two-week stop in June in Marseilles, France, where the numbers only grew: 60,000 participants experienced 80 events and enjoyed works from 260 artists. But visitors won’t encounter any traditional paintings on board, according to Jousset.

“It was very obvious from day one that it was impossible to put ‘real’ artwork onboard because insurance costs would be through the roof. The moisture, salt, safety … for many reasons, it was impossible. So very quickly we pivoted into a digital concept,” he says.

To facilitate digital art, some of the ship’s walls are equipped with screens with horizontal resolutions of about 4,000 pixels, which create an immersive cinema experience.

Outside the yacht, the public can go to pavilions displaying photography and architecture. Attendees can also put on a virtual reality headset and “visit” historic monuments around the Mediterranean.

Physical artwork will be displayed in a main pavilion, created in each port in conjunction with a local curator. “The boat and pavilions are the same at every stop, but we wanted to give visibility to local artists,” Jousset says.

Next to the main pavilion is a central stage set up near the boat at every stop, which is backed by Unesco and the foundation of Prince Albert II of Monaco, During the day there are panels, conferences, and keynotes examining the intersection between art and the environment, while at night the stage is used for performances, dances, and music concerts.

“It’s really an all-encompassing, multidisciplinary, artistic experience,” Jousset says.

Upcoming stops are scheduled for the Moroccan cities of Tangiers (Sept. 20-29) and Rabat (Oct. 11-17), followed by Malaga, Spain (Nov. 1-10). In 2025, the ArtExplorer is scheduled to visit Albania, Croatia, France, and Cyprus. Reserved tickets can be secured online to guarantee a spot on the boat as capacity is limited.

In March, the public got its first chance to board and experience the vessel, as participants in Malta engaged with works from 95 artists.

Fraser Olender has had a glorious rise to stardom since he started as a second stew on Below Deck during Season 9. After being promoted to Chief Stew for Season 10, making him the first male Chief Stew in the franchise’s history, he had a rocky go when Captain Sandy Yawn temporarily stepped in. That didn’t matter as he officially became the face of the franchise for Season 11 when he returned again, this time under the leadership of Captain Kerry Titheradge . So what's the fan-favorite Below Deck star up to now? Is Season 12 in the cards for Fraser Olender?

Below Deck is Bravo's high-seas reality series that captures the highs and lows of working on a luxury yacht . Since 2013, the flagship series has had 11 triumphant seasons and spun off four separate series. Historically, very few crew members remain on the program beyond a season or two. Unless you're something special. Fraser Olender is indeed something special.

Fraser Oldender Had a Strong 'Below Deck' Season 11

Below Deck Season 11 marked the third season for Fraser Olender. The openly gay stew made his debut during Season 9 , where he served as a 2nd Stew under Heather Chase . He made his mark by being proficient at his job while also serving as the resident sass-master. Between his witty quips and big reactions, Fraser Olender quickly became a natural in front of the camera. Following Heather Chase's departure, it was logical for Fraser to step up to the plate and take over the interior. During Season 10, he faced quite the dramatics with an interior team that didn't respect one another, causing him to make some difficult decisions as to who was going to be fired. He settled on letting Camille Lamb go, but Alissa Humber also got the axe from the Captain soon after. When he finally found his footing and established a strong bond with Captain Lee Rosbach , Captain Lee's health caused him to temporarily depart. With Captain Sandy Yawn at the helm, it was her way or the highway, and she didn't necessarily gel with Fraser. She didn't break his spirits to deter him from returning for Season 11, though!

Season 11 was an interesting season for Olender as he proved his worth as a Chief Stew , despite some difficult stews working under him. With a supersized team of three stews working under him, he had to balance three drastically different personalities. And he managed to do so even if they drove him up a wall. Xandi Olivier became his trusted number 2. Cat Baugh needed constant reaffirming, which didn't sit well with Barbie Pascual . Barbie had ideals that didn't mesh with Fraser, causing the two to be at odds. And then, when Cat decided to bough out, her replacement, Paris Field , fit right in, continuing to knock Barbie to the background. Even though Captain Kerry was forced to talk to Fraser regarding his handling of the personalities , he kept things professional on board and proved that not only was he excellent at his job, but his presence on Below Deck was necessary.

Where in the World Is Fraser Olender Now?

If you follow along on his social media , you will certainly know that when Fraser Olender is not working his butt off on a super yacht, he's jetsetting around the world. Well, following along Fraser’s social media, he is living his best life traveling the world. His Instagram has been filled with photos from adventures ranging from Aspen, Colorado to Mykonos and Cyprus. When he's not taking in the stunning views and drinking delicious cocktails, he's been working out. His social media stories have showcased what life for a celebrity yachtie might look like! This fall, he'll be joining fellow Bravolebrity Daisy Kelliher , Chief Stew from Below Deck Sailing Yacht , at the Sausalito Boat Show .

Since Season 11 ended, there was great speculation about whether Fraser would become the second-longest tenured Chief Stew on the flagship series by returning for Season 12. While there has been no official announcement regarding when Season 12 might air , it appears that Season 12 has been filmed. Back at the end of April, according to eagle-eyed fans who took to YouTube , the Chief Stew is back! As is Captain Kerry Titheredge. Spotted filming on motoryacht St. David, Fraser will be returning for another season, alongside some of the crew of Season 11. When a videographer was filming their video , they called out to both the Captain and Chief Stew, waving in acknowledgment. Additionally, Fraser posted a potentially cryptic TikTok lipsync to a monologue from The Devil Wears Prada . The monologue alludes to another divorce. The mystery of the post included his use of the Below Deck hashtag and the tag to Bravo . While his season had already ended when the post was shared, it could mean some drama aboard St. David!

No matter Fraser Olender's official fate, he has secured himself as a legend of Below Deck . Season 11 was a retooling of the flagship program following the departure of Captain Lee Rosbach. With Fraser remaining on board, it's proof that the show trusts him in his leadership role. As many yachties discuss on the show, life onboard may not be their forever career. That could be Fraser's fate as well. For now, fans are thrilled he will likely be back for another season of drama. Let's just hope Jill Zarin doesn't ever come back !
