I'm interested in buying this catamaran  but have questions

There are many ways to buy a catamaran and the procedure varies between manufacturers. It's a process that takes time and you should not be afraid of starting talks with the manufacturer.

Here are some common questions you might have:

Can I afford it?  Talk to the manufacturer and they can advise you on financing options.

Can I sail it?  Arrange a test sail with the manufacturer, or ask them directly what kind of support and education they offer for boat buyers.

If you need anything else, be it more details , an introduction to the manufacturer , a shipyard visit , a  test sail , or help with  customatization,  let us know on the Help  M e page after clicking below and we’ll help you take the next step.

An elegant and powerful bluewater cruising catamaran with high-tech systems that make it comfortable for doublehanded sailing

W hen Bob Hayward, a successful American real estate developer, film studio co-founder and farmer, couldn’t find the perfect cruising catamaran, he had one built at Phil Harvey’s South African boatbuilding yard, the builder of Gunboat catamarans among others. The yard was for sale when Hayward decided to jump into business with yard manager Leon Scheepers, and the pair retained the yard’s skilled boatbuilders and staff. Hayward’s Simonis Voogd Yacht Design was launched as the Kinetic Catamaran 62 in 2019.

kinetic 54 catamaran

“The whole idea for the next cat was to include everything you charter a cruising cat for, a bigger saloon, a large aft deck and a smaller forward sailing cockpit, creating three zones that connect up brilliantly for beautiful indoor-outdoor living spaces,” said Bob Hayward, who now adds owner of Kinetic Catamarans to his list of descriptives. “The key is that it can be sailed solely by a couple.”

Kinetic Catamarans again turned to Simonis Voogd Yacht Design for a 54-foot catamaran that could be easily sailed doublehanded. The KC54 Hull No. 1 made its debut at the U.S. Sailboat Show in Annapolis to much fanfare, and I couldn’t wait to take this performance cat for a test sail.

The details

It’s evident at first glance that this svelte cat, with narrow hulls and a high bridgedeck clearance, it is not your usual bloated floating condo with two hulls. Built entirely of epoxy vacuum-infused carbon fiber and corecell construction, the KC54 displaces 35,825 pounds, and 49,500 pounds fully loaded for cruising. That’s about 20,000 pounds lighter than most other cruising cats of its size, and that weight savings translates into speed.

Buyers have the option of different interior layouts, and for sailors looking to race, a larger sailplan and high-performance C-boards that can fly the windward hull improve the already good performance. The test boat was set up with the cruising rig and furling boom, with cap shrouds that eliminate the need for a backstay. The mast is stepped on the coachroof and compression post.

kinetic 54 catamaran

Employing one of the few low-tech systems on the boat, the daggerboards are controlled by a line-drive system, but that is by design.

“This boat is made for bluewater cruising, so if you hit something, the line breaks not the board,” Hayward said. “It’s a simple fix to re-rig and get sailing again.”

Many features come standard, including the North 3Di Endurance sails, which Hayward said stand up best to the higher loads.

The forward cockpit is all about efficiency when sailing, and it is just a step away from the inside steering station, making this area the command center. All halyards and sheets are led to this cockpit, with two electric Harken winches and the mainsheet on a captive winch.

“Having this setup is key for doublehanded sailing,” Hayward said. “You can trim any sail from any of the three helms.”

With all sail controls located in the forward cockpit and the traveler on the coachroof, the aft cockpit is all about living space. The L-shaped dinette can seat eight people in comfort. Built into the aft rail are an electric grill and drink refrigerator. A dropdown swim platform bridges the two transom steps, which have lazarettes for gear and a wet locker.

“I have this all set up for fishing on my boat, including a live well,” Hayward, who owns KC54 hull No. 3, said.

Kinetic 54 Carbon Catamaran

Why the Kinetic 54?

We enjoyed the Leopard 48 and 50 for a combined total of 7 years. In that time, we sailed from Fort Lauderdale, Florida through the entire Caribbean, through the Panama Canal, north to San Francisco, California and all the way back! During the COVID years, we took another spin around the Caribbean and sailed up to the Northeast of the US. These were incredible journeys on a fantastic vessels.

After two Leopard Catamarans we determined we were ready to take the leap and order a lightweight, carbon fiber, performance catamaran. We discussed this with our friend Alex Simonis, one of the designers of the Leopards. He and his partner were working with a new manufacturer and designed a luxury performance catamaran that incorporated the forward cockpit layout that we love so much. This is what lead us to the Kinetic brand, which is a small yard in Knysna, South Africa that manufacturers only two of these vessels per year.

We are very excited to begin sailing in the Caribbean winter season of 2023. We anticipate a learning curve on this special design but we are looking forward to the challenge!

The mast and mainsheet traveler are to be found on the coachroof so as to free up the relaxation areas as much as possible: no sail handling maneuvers from the aft cockpit - these are concentrated in the forward cockpit. In the same vein, the helm is located right the way forward in the nacelle. The KC54 will be marketed with two rigs - Standard and Performance/Racing. With a mast 1.4 m (4’7”) taller and an extended bowsprit, the upwind sail area jumps from 149 to 162 m² (1,600 to 1,745 sq ft) and the masthead gennaker offers 167 m² (1,800 sq ft). This is enough to lengthen the boat’s stride, especially given the very well-designed appendages and the displacement being well-managed: most of the fittings are made in a carbon/foam/wood veneer sandwich. Inside the nacelle, there’s comfortable headroom - 2.10 m (6’11”) - and a 360° view. In the hulls, there is 2.05 m (6’9”) between floor and ceiling. The manufacturer is offering 3 or 4-cabins versions: in both configurations, the forward berths lie athwartships. We hope to have tested this superb catamaran on the water before the end of the year!

Viacheslav Koleichuk: Atom 1967/2018

kinetic 54 catamaran

Garage is pleased to present the first reconstruction of  Atom ( 1967/2018) , a monumental kinetic work by the key figure in Russian kinetic art, Viacheslav Koleichuk.

The thirteen-meter-high structure was originally commissioned by the Kurchatov Institute of Nuclear Energy and built in 1967 for the fiftieth anniversary of the October Revolution. The construction was deceptively simple at first glance, but combined complex approaches to the creation of form that would later define Koleichuk’s oeuvre. One of the key elements of the work––a large moving sphere––is an example of his innovative approach. Made of hundreds of metal tubes, the sphere is set in motion by the wind, held together by the tensions of its constituent parts. Light reflected by the sun, or colored projections at night, triggers myriad forms and shapes, activating the space around the structure.

Initiated at a time when official Soviet organizations were interested in collaborating with artists to integrate art into the life of the city, the sculpture was initially constructed on the square in front of the institute by the then twenty-six-year-old artist, in collaboration with his wife, Marina Koleichuk, and engineer Gennady Rykunov. Working closely with the artist for the reconstruction at Garage, the core team has been joined by Nikolay Khrust, who has produced a new score in collaboration with Koleichuk to replace the lost original composition by Leon Theremin. The new composition is partly played on an ovaloid, one of the many musical instruments Koleichuk has invented during his lifetime. It is synched with the light projections to produce an even more mesmerizing, cosmic effect.

Conceived as a Garage Square Commission , the reconstruction of  Atom marks fifty-one years since its creation. It complements the exhibition The Other Trans-Atlantic. Kinetic and Op Art in Eastern Europe and Latin America 1950s–1970s , which takes place at Garage March 17–May 9, 2018.

Organized by Snejana Krasteva, Garage Curator

ABOUT VIACHESLAV KOLEICHUK

Viacheslav Koleichuk (1941–2018) He graduated from Moscow Architecture Institute in 1966 and, after a short period of collaboration with the Dvizhenie collective of kinetic artists, he founded the group MIR in 1968. Among wider audiences, Koleichuk is best known for his designs for the cult Soviet sci-fi film Kin-dza-dza! (1986) by Georgiy Daneliya. He has held various academic and teaching positions, most notably at the now defunct All-Union Scientific Research Institute of Industrial Design, as well as being responsible for the design of the Soviet Pavilions at the World’s Fairs Expo ’67, Expo ’75, and Expo ’85, among other large commissions. Koleichuk is the holder of more than forty patents and the author of several publications and academic articles.

Catamaran as a sailing power plant: increasing speed parameters

  • Chekarev Konstantin 1
  • Zalihanov Alim 1
  • 1. Lomonosov Moscow State University, Moscow, Russia

Description

Installations that convert kinetic wind energy into electricity, including floating wind turbines, are large due to the low air density. The authors propose a sailing power plant that converts energy of the wind flow into energy of the water flow, which is used to generate electricity. That makes it possible to reduce the size of the energy converter. A model of a sailing power plant was created. It was madeas catamaran-wise, symmetrical with respect to the bow and stern, which makes cyclical movements along an arc of a circle in an angular interval specified with respect to the direction of the wind. Laboratory studies showed the fundamental feasibility ofthe installation, thoughits implementation requires to solve a number of problems, in particular, to determine design solutions to increase the speed of the catamaran. There were createdseveral versions of the catamaran model of different weights, with a different number of masts and sail areas, with which experimental studies were carried out. The article presents the results of these studies.
