Both of those people were on a sailboat that was involved in a collision with a motorboat.

"Motorboating is extremely dangerous in general," said Scott Barber, who sails in the area routinely. "When you're under sail power, you usually don't have the ability to navigate as well as a motorboat, so I just hope both parties involved were paying attention best they could."

A witness who saw the two victims brought back to shore in Weymouth tells NBC10 Boston it appeared a woman was unconscious and a man had a serious gash to his leg.

"It's probably not paying attention," said a boater in Weymouth who did not want to be identified. "There's probably no other way it could happen, it shouldn't happen."

Authorities say the sailboat sank. It will have to be salvaged, because if it remains in the water, it will be a hazard to navigation.

Boaters say it was calm out on the water Friday, visibility was good, and they're trying to figure out how this accident could happen.

"By Grape Island, it can certainly be very narrow," said Barber. "And if you're not paying attention, you can get into a situation you can't get out of."

Investigators haven't said exactly how the crash unfolded and if anyone will face any charges.

Two boats collided in the water in Hingham Bay on Friday afternoon, with video from Sky 5 showing a sailboat partially submerged in the water with another boat nearby.

The incident happened in the vicinity of Grape Island, which is approximately one mile north of Hingham Harbor in Weymouth.

The U.S. Coast Guard said they responded to a collision between a 21 foot sailboat and a 38 foot power boat along with the Quincy and Weymouth harbormasters.

Authorities believe the power boat was heading away from Hingham into the main channel and struck a 21 foot sail boat.

What appears to be blood is visible on the back of the motorboat.

The crash submerged the sailboat, leaving only the top of its mast and the tip of the bow visible above the waterline.

A source says the motorboat struck the sailboat, and a man and woman on board the sailboat both suffered serious injuries, apparently hit by the other boat's propeller.

"I was hoping that everyone was ok," said Ann Goldman, a ferry passenger who witnessed the aftermath.

Goldman was on an MBTA ferry that passed by the two boats and took pictures shortly after they collided around noon.

"I mean when you see a collision, when you see police boats, you're like, 'I hope something wasn't terribly wrong.' But something was definitely terribly wrong," Goldman said.

Two people on the motorboat appeared unhurt and were brought to shore and questioned by state environmental police.

"We've never seen anything like that going in and out to Boston. And so it was a bit of a shock, especially on a calm day," said David McGuiness, another ferry passenger.

motorboat, sailboat collide off the coast of weymouth

Longtime sailboater Dennis Hynes said boats are supposed to slow down in the narrow channel between Weymouth and Grape Island.

"If you were leaving this area, you would go right through that point," Hynes said.

Hynes said that if the sailboat was under sail power, it would have the right of way.

"It should not have been that busy out there. So it looks like maybe some inattention and excessive speed just looking at the pictures you showed me," Hynes said.

The female suffered injuries which were describe by officials as serious. She was transported to a Boston area hospital while the male was transported to a hpWeymouth.

The investigation into the collision continues as authorities work to determine if someone is at fault.

Woman injured in Hingham Bay boat crash dies, DA investigating

A second person injured in the collision remains in critical condition, by marc fortier • published september 10, 2024 • updated on september 10, 2024 at 7:04 pm.

The Norfolk District Attorney's Office says it is investigating a boat crash last month in Hingham Bay that left one person dead and another in critical condition.

The crash occurred on Aug. 16 around 12:43 p.m. off the coast of Grape Island in Weymouth, Massachusetts. Two people who were on a 21-foot Pisces sailboat that was involved in a collision with a 38-foot Sea Ray motorboat were critically injured and taken to area hospitals.

The district attorney's office confirmed Tuesday that one of the two people died Saturday, and the other remains in critical condition. The person who died was identified by authorities as 70-year-old Patricia Cicalese, of East Walpole. The name of the other injured party was not released.

A witness who saw the two victims brought back to shore in Weymouth told NBC10 Boston at the time that it appeared a woman was unconscious and a man had a serious gash to his leg. Authorities said the sailboat sank following the crash.

The driver of the motorboat and his wife were not injured and cooperated with police in the aftermath of the crash. According to court documents associated with the case the driver told investigators he was going about 17 mph at the time of the collision and did not see the sailboat until it was too late. He said he attempted to power down his vessel and steered hard to the side in an effort to avoid the collision.

Investigators said there was no evidence that the driver of the motorboat was in any way impaired.

The motorboat had multiple scrapes, rubs and cuts on its port side, investigators said, there were numerous pieces of wood strewn across the bow and along the starboard side, and there were blood stains on the rear starboard side of the swim deck. Both forward handrails were damaged and bent.

Prosecutors and state police detectives from the district attorney's office said Tuesday that they have assumed jurisdiction and are working with the Massachusetts Environmental Police to investigate the death.

Court documents show that investigators seized a Garmin electronic unit from the sailboat that has the ability to record and save data related to the operation, position, speed and direction of the vessel. The U.S. Coast Guard took possession of the unit on Monday for forensic examination and extraction of pertinent data. A detailed inventory of any data gathered will be filed with the court as soon as it is completed.

The investigation remains active, and anyone with information about the crash is asked to call the district attorney's office at 781-830-4990.

Propeller Injures Two People After Sailboat Crashes Into Motorboat

Propeller Injures Two People After Motorboat Crashes Into Sailboat

Although they may not seem as dangerous as cars, boats require just as much safety and precautions. They can also be just as deadly in the right conditions. Take this case for example. Two people got injured by a boat propeller. This was after a motorboat and a sailboat got in a crash with each other.

The incident happened off the coast of Massachusetts on Friday around noon. The two boats were traveling on Hingham Bay near Grape Island. That's when they ended up crashing into each other in a scene of carnage. From the sounds of it, the motorboat ended up crashing into the sailboat. Speaking with WCVB, the US Coast Guard said the motorboat was leaving Hingham into the main channel. That's when it crashed into the sailboat.

The two occupants of the sailboat ended up with some pretty nasty injuries. That's due to the rapidly moving boat propeller. While it helps move a boat through the water, the propeller can also easily strike through flesh. Basically, you don't want to rub up against a rapidly moving fan of death. According to authorities, both the male and female passengers sustained injuries. They appeared to be from the propeller striking against them according to officials on the scene. These weren't paper cuts either. In particular, the female boater's injuries proved to be serious.

Motorboat Strikes Sailboat On The Waterway

Fortunately, the Weymouth Police Department's marine unit helped the two injured boaters. They applied tourniquets to their injuries while waiting for emergency responders to get to the scene. Both needed to go to a local hospital.

Meanwhile, police took the boaters on the motorboat in for questioning. They're investigating exactly what led to the accident in question. The footage from a WCVB showed the wreckage after the crash. Apparently the sailboat ended up almost completely under the water behind the motorboat. It will take some time to get to the bottom of things. If you're planning on hitting the lake, practice proper precautions. Always be aware of your surroundings and fellow boaters on the waterways. It pays to be vigilant.

U.S. publishing boss Adrienne Vaughan killed in "terrible" speedboat crash in Italy

August 4, 2023 / 4:44 PM EDT / CBS/AP

U.S. publishing executive Adrienne Vaughan has died in a horrific boating accident off Italy's Amalfi Coast, her company said Friday.

Vaughan, 45, was president of Bloomsbury Publishing Inc., publisher of the Harry Potter series.

"Adrienne Vaughan was a leader of dazzling talent and infectious passion and had a deep commitment to authors and readers," said the board chair, Julia Reidhead, and president and CEO, Maria A. Pallante, in a joint statement. "Most of all she was an extraordinary human being, and those of us who had the opportunity to work with her will be forever fortunate."

The rented motorboat Vaughan and her family were on during a vacation to the popular tourist destination crashed into a sailboat Thursday, Italian state TV said, knocking her into the water, where according to witnesses she was struck by the motorboat's propeller.

adrienne-vaughan-boat-accident.png

A video published by the New York Post showed guests on the sailboat during the collision, with one woman asking, "What happened?"

"This boat, it collided with us," a man responds frantically, before running across the deck.

Moments later, another man looks over the edge: "Jesus Christ," he says. "She needs help," says another guest.

"The sailboat was going straight ahead and so was the [motor]boat," Pietro Iuzzolino, a barman who was making cocktails aboard the sailboat, told Italian newspaper Corriere del Mezzogiorno . "Then suddenly [the motorboat] veered 180 degrees: there was a collision and I heard a very loud bang.

"I saw the woman in the water being held up by her children and her husband," he said. "It was terrible."

Vaughan was pulled out of the water and brought to a dock but died by the time a helicopter ambulance arrived, state TV said.

The Italian coast guard office in Amalfi is investigating the crash. A call to its office wasn't answered, nor was there a response to an emailed request to the Coast Guard for details.

The victim's husband was hospitalized with a shoulder injury while the couple's two young children were uninjured, according to the reports.

No one aboard the sailboat, which had more than 80 U.S. and German tourists and the crew members on board, was injured.

A blood test for the skipper of the motorboat tested positive for substance use, reported Italian news agency ANSA, which didn't indicate whether the result indicated alcohol or drug consumption.

Sailboat barman Iuzzolino said the skipper was "vomiting," adding "we got the impression he was drunk." The skipper, an Italian about 30 years old, suffered a broken pelvis and ribs, ANSA reported.

There was no answer at the courthouse in the southern of port city of Salerno, where prosecutors are overseeing the investigation.

When the motorboat crashed, it had been headed to Positano, one of the most popular destinations along the Amalfi Coast, Italian media said.

DA: Woman dies, another victim in critical condition after sailboat, motorboat collide off Weymouth

A woman has died from her injuries and a second victim remains hospitalized in critical condition after a sailboat and motorboat collided in the water off Weymouth in August, authorities announced Tuesday.

The Norfolk District Attorney’s Office said it has launched a death investigation into a collision involving a 38-foot motorized Sea Ray vessel and a 21-foot Pisces sailboat that occurred in the area off Grape Island on the afternoon of Aug. 16.

One of the victims hurt in the wreck, 70-year-old Patricia Cicalese, of Walpole, has since died from her injuries, the DA’s office said. The other victim, whose name hasn’t been released, continues to fight for their life in the hospital.

“Prosecutors and Massachusetts State Police detectives from the Norfolk District Attorney’s Office have assumed jurisdiction and are working in concert with the Massachusetts Environmental Police to investigate this death,” a spokesperson for the DA’s office said in a statement.

Cicalese was on the sailboat when it was struck by the motorboat, a Massachusetts Environmental Police Officer Christopher Ahlborg stated in an affidavit filed in Quincy District Court.

Video captured by a Boston 25 News photographer showed the sailboat gradually sinking as emergency response boats flocked to the scene of the crash.

“The sailboat had capsized and the motorboat somehow attached and hung up on the sailboat,” Ahlborg wrote in the affidavit.

Ahlborg said the motorboat captain was bringing his vessel back up to speed after leaving a “no wake zone” when he spotted a small fishing boat crossing in front of him less than a mile away. At the same time, Ahlborg said the captain was “trying to pay attention” to the speed of another vessel he was traveling with.

“When he turned his head back, he saw the sailboat, but it was too late,” Ahlborg stated in the affidavit. “He tried to turn hard to the starboard side but could not avoid the collision.”

The boat captain and his wife were “visibly traumatized” but not injured in the crash. They told investigators that they were heading to Gloucester for the weekend at the time of the collision.

Ahlborg noted in the affidavit that he believes “probable cause exists that digital forensic evidence may exist within the marine electronics for the potential violations of reckless or negligent operation of a motorboat.”

In the affidavit, Ahlborg stated that he’s requested a search warrant to forensically examine a GPS device, and trained personnel with the United States Coast Guard Investigative Services would be asked to extract “pertinent” electronic and historical data.

There have been no criminal charges filed in connection with the crash. Anyone with information is urged to contact the DA’s office at 781-830-4990.
