Precision 16' or Holder 14' First Boat

  • Add to quote

I'm looking at buying either a Precision 16' or a Holder 14' as a first boat to learn to sail on....... The boats I'm looking at are both comparable in condition and age. I may actually be able to get the Precision 16' cheaper than the Holder 14'. My question being is one going to be better than the other as a first boat for a new sailor ? It will be used mainly on inland reservoirs or lakes, maybe an occasional trip to Lake Michigan on a CALM day. Thanks for your help and input ! Fred

Precision 15 perhaps? But my $$ is on the Precision. Better supported boats, generally slightly faster, and more sail controls. Better resale.

I have a '81 Vagabond 14, same as the Holder 14. I bought it three seasons ago to teach myself to sail. It's a great little boat but does have some shortcomings. It trades some speed for stability, which is fine with me. It's really designed as a fun play boat - it's great to hit the lake and sail for a few hours but it's awkward to work out storage and use of an anchor, there's no reefing set up, and sail trim controls are limited. I've updated and added some things, but I feel like we're outgrowing the boat. I'm an hour from water so if I go I'd like to spend all day out on the lake, and the V14 isn't the best for that. Having said that it has taught us well and has been very forgiving of a beginner. There is a community of owners on a Facebook page and a yahoo group. Most parts are available or there are known substitutions. Sail plans are still on file should a sail need replaced. The Holder 14, Vagabond 14, and Hobie 1-14 were all the same design but equipment varied, so a fair number of boats come up for sale. It does seem like prices are trending upward slightly, but I grabbed mine with a trailer and original sails for $600. It needed some rigging and such, but don't they all.

Here are a couple of considerations: Comfort and Convenience - you want a boat that is easy for you to go from your car to sails up, and once sailing, you want to be comfortable. The more pleasant the experience = the more often you will make the effort to enjoy it. In learning how to sail, just like any other worthwhile skill, the more you practices, the better your skills get, and better your skills = more enjoyment. Owners' Association - I've been amazed at how valuable an active owners' has been to me. Check out the groups for both boats. What kind of boats are being sailed near you? I'd choose a boat that has an active fleet nearby, if possible. Even if there are just a few of one kind of boat, that might be your journey easier and more fun.

The design details for the Precision 165 were developed at the same time that we were making our design contributions to the America^3 "Women's Team" America's Cup effort. In some ways the contrast between a 16 ft. trailersailer and "Mighty Mary" could hardly be more stark, but at the heart of both efforts is an equal passion for careful design, good boats, and fun sailing.

The Precision 165 is intended to provide the most performance and fun possible within her builder's mandate for a low trailer weight and an especially reasonable price. This cannot be done with smoke and mirrors, so it must be done by focusing exceptionally hard on developing her most vital "fun features" while trimming away anything not truly essential. Towards this end, her cockpit is drawn large and deep for comfort and security, but her freeboard is kept low for reduced weight and cost. Her interior features comfortable berth space for two, a portable but cleverly concealed head, an ice chest and dry storage, but she makes no specious claim to have "full standing headroom." Her computer-modeled keel has an "end-plate effect" lead bulb for stability and efficiency to windward and shoal draft for easy trailering and launching. Her rig carries plenty of sail area for sprightly performance, but a simple three-stay rig for low weight, low cost and easy assembly.

The full form of the Precision 165 features a contemporary stem profile that gives her both an especially long effective sailing length for high "top end" speed, and a very narrow entry angle for low added resistance in waves, but she shares the careful balance and dynamic stability that have earned the 15, 18, 21, 23 and 28 their well-earned reputations as sailing thoroughbreds.

This office has produced a wide variety of designs, most much larger than the Precision 165. however, like all of our designs for Precision Boat Works, this latest effort is not less significant to us only less big. They have built all of our Precision designs with meticulous care, and we are proud of each and every one of them. We are confident that the new Precision 165 will quickly earn an equally enthusiastic following among yet another large and loyal group of new Precision owners.

Precision 16

Hi All: I am looking for some input to help me improve my sailing situation. I currently have a Tanzer 16 which I day sail singlehanded at a few local reservoirs. The boat is stable and fast enough to be fun but difficult to rig due to the long/heavy mast that does not have a hinged plate at the bottom ... and no relatively easy way to convert to a hinged plate. It has a forked bracket on the bottom that has to be manhandled over the keelson at the front of the cockpit ... PITA. The Tanzer is also an older single hulled boat without a self bailing cockpit. I have been looking for an easier to rig boat to replace the T16 and have found a mid 80's Precision 16. From my research there were less than 100 built and they are from a different designer than the current similar sized P15 ... so looks like a totally different boat. Not very much info that I can find on the P16. Does anyone have any first-hand experience with the P16? Especially as a comparison to either the Tanzer 16 or the Precision 15 (which I can find much more info about and sounds like a good potential fit for me). One other data point ... I previously had a 1999 Hunter 170 that was a great boat ... rig was more manageable than the Tanzer and it sailed like a rocket! But I got sick of having to do crack repairs as a winter project every year ... the cracks were easy enough to fix, but I moved and no longer have a shop to do the fairing out the repairs and painting in winter weather. Budget rules out the new version (Hunter 18) ... I need to be sub $2k for the boat and trailer. Happy to hear about other options if you have suggestions ... I have considered Buccaneer/Mutineer, Catalina 14.2/16.5, etc ... but nothing available in my area right now (near Portland Oregon). I am looking at the Precision 16 this weekend so input on that boat is most pressing. Thanks!!

Jim Taylor designed the 15 and a bunch of other boats for Precision. He has a reputation for designing good sailing boats that are fast and comfortable to sail. That is certainly true for my boat which he also designed. Based on his reputation I would opt for the 15 over the 16. Precision: Small, Fast, and Fun by Jim Taylor Yacht Designs

In Game Description [ edit | edit source ]

As a member of karbyshev's cabinet [ edit | edit source ].

What can be said of Dmitry Timofeyevich Yazov, the protégé to the Black League's founder? Born in a backwater town near Omsk to a peasant family, Dmitry joined the Red Army at the outbreak of the Great Patriotic War at just seventeen. When the Germans caused the complete and utter rout of the Red Army, Dmitry was forced to make his way back to West Siberia and drawn to the new strength of Kaganovich's West Siberian People's Republic.

However, like many military men in West Siberia, a black coal of hate formed in Yazov's heart for the Germans for what they had done to his Motherland. His dedication to the defence of Russia drew the eye of Dmitry Karbyshev, the general who would go on to break with Kaganovich and form the Black League. Dmitry, liking Yazov's intelligence and fanaticism to the cause of saving the motherland, took him in as his personal protégé. This caused Yazov to go with his mentor to Omsk when they finally declared independence from Kaganovich, and he became the right hand man to the older man.

However, Yazov holds nothing but contempt for what he sees now. The people all around Karbyshev only pretend to believe in the cause of the Black League, using their mantle to do whatever the hell they please with Karbyshev too powerless to stop it. He swears to himself that he will make the old man proud, that Karbyshev's dream of a final Great Trial with the Germans defeated once and for all. After all, he is Dmitry Yazov, and he will make sure his mentor's work was not in vain.

In Game Biography 1960s [ edit | edit source ]

Dmitry Timofeyevich Yazov is part of a new generation of post-Soviet leaders: those born after the rise of Lenin, with no memories of the Tsar or the Great War. They knew hardship as children, but were told that this hardship was a necessary sacrifice for the Motherland's survival. When the Nazis came swarming from the west, they fought on the front lines under the Red Army, witnessing hell on earth and suffering bitter defeat again and again. When the Great Patriotic War was over, what little happiness they had in their former lives was taken from them by the victorious Germans. The West Russian Revolutionary Front's military failures and subsequent collapse in the 1950s only made men like Yazov more set in their ways: the old Soviet commanders had fervor, but the leadership desperately needed some fresh blood. Younger men, harder men, those who were taught from birth about the value of sacrifice and have witnessed it firsthand. With Comrade Karbyshev having passed before his vision was complete, the burden now falls to his protégé Dmitry Yazov to carry it out. Unlike his former mentor, Yazov has both the will and the stamina to implement it, and is already transforming the entire nation to be ready for a form of total war more destructive than any the world has ever seen. He expects his people to sacrifice everything they have, including their lives, to help achieve revenge against the German menace, and many of them will gladly do so. Nothing, not even the threat of atomic fire, will be enough to deter him from his course, and he frequently boasts that if all Germans and all but one Russian perish in the coming war, it will still be a victory. Omsk is stirring from its slumber, and the world trembles at the thought.

In Game Biography 1970s [ edit | edit source ]

Dmitry Yazov looks upon his handiwork, a strong and hard Russia preparing eagerly for revenge, and smiles pridefully.

Yazov and his comrades had known hardship as children; they were told that the hardship was a necessary sacrifice for the Motherland's survival. But failures of the Great Patriotic War and the West Russian War first broke the minds of Yazov and his ilk, as they realized how futile it had all been. Then it led them to conclude that the leadership of the Russian people needed to be in the hands of young, hard men who had been taught well about sacrifice and knew it firsthand.

Comrade General Karbyshev, founder of the Black League, suffered death and was buried before his vision was complete; it fell, therefore, to his protégé Dmitry Yazov to carry that vision out. After subjugating West Siberia, defeating the liberal and old guard insurgency to secure his rule, and unifying the whole of Russia, Yazov was freed to begin his master work: that of transitioning all Russia into a state of readiness for a form of total war more destructive than any seen before.

Yazov now expects his people to sacrifice everything they have - even their lives - to achieve total revenge against the German menace, and more and more of them are willing to do so. Nothing, not even the threat of thermonuclear hellfire destroying civilization itself, will be enough to deter him from his course. Indeed, Yazov frequently boasts that if no Germans and only one Russian survive the coming Great Trial, it will still be a total victory.

The Great Trial approaches, and Yazov smirks as the opportunity for his revenge upon those that raped his homeland comes ever closer.

And "the lamps are going out all over Eurasia; we shall never see them lit again in our life-time."

Biography [ edit | edit source ]

Early life [ edit | edit source ].

Yazov was evacuated by Bukharin's USSR into Omsk prior to their capitulation during the Second World War. Experiencing deep sorrow and hate after witnessing Russia's destruction, he would grow up with his ambition to take revenge against the invading Germans.

Dmitry Karbyshev, which had escaped from Mauthausen concentration camp, oversaw the collapse of the West Russian Revolutionary Front, moved back to Omsk, where he established the Black League, taking Yazov under his wing. The Black League's thesis is a third confrontation with Germany, what they call the Great Trial. To be sure that his successors will always be prepared for it, Karbyshev created Plan Hydra, a precise line of succession, in case he dies.

However, Yazov grew to follow the vision of the Great Trial in mind, and so did his fellow officers. Fueled by hatred of the Germans, he believed making the Great Trial merely a defensive war would be an injustice to all the lives lost by their hands. As Karbyshev's health declines, and with him as the chosen successor, it is only a matter of time before the Great Trial becomes the day when Germany will feel Russia's total revenge.

Post West Siberian Unification [ edit | edit source ]

After the unification of West Siberia in game, Pavel Batov, will launch his resistance against Yazov, seeing him as a psychopath who wants to destroy the world.

Trivia [ edit | edit source ]

  • After unifying Russia, the player has a 5% chance of getting a sunglasses version of Yazov's post unification portrait.
  • In OTL, Yazov was the Soviet Minister of Defense from 1987 to 1991. Yazov served in command of the Soviet Nukes in the Cuban Missile Crisis. He didn't want to destroy the world and Germany in OTL, but he was a brutal general, as he put down an Azerbaijani Revolt against the USSR, and a Baltic one before the dissolution of the USSR.

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

  1. Precision 16

The Precision 16 is a recreational sailboat, built predominantly of fiberglass, with teak wood trim. It has a fractional sloop rig with aluminum spars. The double hull has a raked stem, a plumb transom and a retractable centerboard. The a transom-hung, kick-up rudder has an aluminum head that is controlled by a tiller. Both the rudder and centerboard are made from foam-cored fiberglass.

  2. PRECISION 16

A boat with a BN of 1.6 or greater is a boat that will be reefed often in offshore cruising. Derek Harvey, "Multihulls for Cruising and Racing", International Marine, Camden, Maine, 1991, states that a BN of 1 is generally accepted as the dividing line between so-called slow and fast multihulls.

It does seem like prices are trending upward slightly, but I grabbed mine with a trailer and original sails for $600.
