Area yacht club hosts boat race at Lake Lawtonka

LAWTON, Okla (KSWO) - What better way to enjoy a summer weekend than on the lake. That's exactly what happened Saturday for many boaters as the Sunken Bridge Yacht Club held a boat race at Lake Lawtonka.

It was the Annual Hobie Fleet 251 Regatta. 18 boats from Oklahoma, Texas, Colorado and more gathered together to race for the Oklahoma Championship. Teams of one or two people were in control of Hobie catamarans ranging from 16 to 18 feet.

"It's a one design boat. This is a 16-foot boat. We will be racing against other boats that are identical," explains Jimmie Smith, regatta chairman. "They can be tuned a little differently. Makes a big difference. But they are one design boats, so everybody is on the same boat. Different people are competing on the same boat."

Not only does the design of the boat come into play, but also the wind. 10 to 20 mile per hour winds are expected to help racers. If it increases, trouble can arise.

"If it gets more than that, they can also sail, but it gets pretty testy. The wind, the steady wind is the way to go because you don't have to shed in your sail as much. You don't have to tack as much. If you have gust, that's trickier because it can actually tip these boats over," says Kade McClure, member of Sunken Bridge Yacht Club. "But if it changes, the wind changes and it clocks around, today it's from the south-southwest. If it clocks around, that race committee will actually stop the race and change the line to accommodate the wind."

Water Authority renews leases with Boat, Yacht clubs

Lawton Boat Club members persuaded the Water Authority not to scuttle their recreation lease at Lake Lawtonka, and agreed to pay a much higher price. The City Council, convening as the Water Authority, also voted to renew the Sunken Bridge Yacht Club campground lease at Lake Lawtonka, and at progressively higher rates.

The Lawton Boat Club has been a faithful steward, providing several amenities and performing all of the maintenance and repairs at its site, the Water Authority was informed.

“We built a food pavilion that we’ve opened up for a lot of uses, such as military retirement ceremonies,” said Michael Mc-Clelland of Lawton, who retired from the Oklahoma Highway Patrol after a 42.5-year career. “We built the boat ramp at no cost to the city.”

“We’ve also protected the shoreline with rocks” to prevent erosion, said attorney and retired Cameron University business professor Bill Ramsey.

“We do the mowing, we pay the water bills and for the repairs,” said Realtor Max Sasseen.

The City of Lawton and the Boat Club “have been partners for a long time,” Sasseen noted. The Boat Club was founded 76 years ago, according to McClelland.

The lease “should not be terminated,” said Ramsey, a Lawton Boat Club member for 42 years. “We encourage you to let us continue to lease it.”

“Our membership is not exclusive, it’s inclusive,” McClelland said. The club “has a lot of retirees,” he said. “I have friends from Burkburnett, Texas, who are members and attend our events.”

“We have paid exactly what the City has said we should pay, but we realize it’s not enough,” Sasseen conceded. Demand for reserved space at Lawtonka “has grown exponentially” since the COVID-19 pandemic, he acknowledged.

In exchange for a new five-year lease, the Boat Club agreed to raise its lease payments more than sevenfold: from $7,000 per year to $50,000 when the current lease expires June 30, and to increase the payments by 20% annually each of the next four years.

“We’re prepared to write the check,” Sasseen told the Authority. “We’re ramping up to something closer to fair market value.”

City Councilman Randy Warren said his goal was to “figure out a way to make it equitable. It belongs to the citizens of Lawton.”

“You came to the table, rather than just complain,” Councilman Allan Hampton said. “I commend you.”

By incorporating the Lawton Boat Club campground into the School House Slough camping area, more than $234,000 from the boat club’s two dozen campsites would flow into the Lawton Water Authority’s coffers, city staff estimated. However, the Water Authority “would be responsible for the upkeep and any improvements,” Deputy City Manager Dewayne Burk said.

Councilman Kelly Harris made a motion to renew the agreement effective July 1, the first day of Fiscal Year 2024-25, at a price of $50,000 with a 20% in crease in each subsequent year of the agreement and “obligations” remaining the same. The council endorsed the motion unanimously.

The Lawton Water Authority also voted without dissent to renew the Sunken Bridge Yacht Club’s campground lease at Lake Lawtonka for another three and a half years after it expired May 1. However, the price tag will increase incrementally, starting at $2,500 for 2025, $4,000 for 2026, and $6,000 for 2027.

Furthermore, “it is the City’s intention to absorb the campground into the School House Slough campground area when the lease extension expires Dec. 31, 2027.

Sunken Bridge Yacht Club is located on “one of the most picturesque sides of the lake, with a view onto Mount Scott,” Burk said. However, some of its sailboats stored there are in “a serious state of disrepair,” he said. The site is not intended to be “a boneyard for old boats.”

Lawton Water Authority meets to discuss lease increases and extensions for clubs in lakes area

L AWTON, Okla. (KSWO) - The Lawton Boat Club, the Sunken Bridge Yacht Club, and the Minnow Marina at Fisherman’s Cove were up for discussion before the Lawton City Council Fee Committee.

One concern city officials had was making sure the City was getting fair market value by raising the fees on the land

So to compensate, the city decided to increase and extend lease prices for the Lawton Boat Club and Sunken Bridge Yacht Club.

However, the committee chose not to renew the Minnow Marina lease, which is set to expire in June. We have been unable to contact anyone from the club for comment at this time.

You can expect your 7News team to follow up with these clubs to see how these changes will affect the future of lake recreational activities.

City of Lawton may end lake concession agreements

City officials will weigh recommendations Monday that would end campground leases at two lakes concession areas and put a time frame for expiration on a third one.

The recommendations are being made to the Lawton Water Authority (a function of the City Council), whose members had directed the City Council Fee Committee to analyze and make recommendations on existing leases with Lawton Boat Club, Minnow Marina at Fisherman’s Cove and Sunken Bridge Yacht Club. Those recommendations: don’t renew leases with Lawton Boat Club and Minnow Marina, while extending a lease with Sunken Bridge Yacht Club through 2027, but require the entity to raise its rates.

The action comes as the City of Lawton staff and City Council look at changes to the concession areas at Lake Ellsworth and Lake Lawtonka. The water authority/council already has hired a new concessionaire to operate the convenience store and fueling system at School House Slough while city staff continues to analyze options for other amenities and leases there. City staff is looking at other concession areas as well, including those located near School House Slough on Lake Lawtonka.

Monday’s recommendation for Lawton Boat Club is to not renew the lease that expires June 30 and absorb that entity’s campground area into the School House Slough campground. Existing campers would be allowed to remain in their RV spots, but would have to pay the rates charged for city camping sites, which includes $2,868.75 and $2,712.50, depending on the site. Lawton Boat Club has said it wants to extend its lease.

The recommendation for Minnow Marina on Lake Ellsworth is similar: don’t renew the campground lease and absorb those sites into the city’s lakeside day use area, where campers would pay the same rates set for city sites. Committee members said their recommendation is influenced by the fact it is not economically feasible to build a “sustainable” sewer system and make repairs on an existing waterline, meaning it isn’t feasible to lease the area. The concessionaires have said they want a new, five-year lease.

At the Sunken Bridge Yacht Club on Lake Lawtonka’s east shoreline, the recommendation is to extend the existing lease through 2027, but require rate increases for those campsites equal to the rates paid for city sites (ranging from $2,000 to $6,000 annually), with the ultimate goal of absorbing the campground area into the School House Slough camp area after 2027. Committee members said they were wiling to wait on that action because of improvements that must be made first so lake users have access to a dry slip area suitable for sailboat storage.

In a final item, the Lawton Water Authority will meet in executive session to discuss the purchase of real property at Ralph’s Resort on Lake Ellsworth. City officials said that lease will expire Dec. 31, and the existing lease requires the city to purchase real property added by the concessionaire.
