Sulle auto del Sultano del Brunei circolano storie di ogni tipo, alcune attendibili, altre meno. Secondo quanto si mormora, ne possederebbe circa 7.000, compresi alcuni dei modelli più rari e preziosi mai realizzati. Benché possa sembrare un paradosso, il fortunato proprietario predilige il massimo riserbo a riguardo. Di solito, infatti, chi ha certe meraviglie vuole esporle, avere gli occhi puntati addosso. Ma, si sa, ogni testa è un piccolo mondo, e forse pure questioni di sicurezza lo inducono a tenere il massimo riserbo. Anziché provare l’ebbrezza di guidare certi esemplari, pare gli basti ammirarle. Tuttavia, alcune immagini inedite permettono di dare loro uno sguardo.ne

Tra realtà e leggenda

Dal 1967 il sultano Hassanal Bolkiah regna sovrano. Tra le enormi fortune accumulate, i veicoli personali ne riflettono appieno la grandezza. Come accennato in apertura, ammontano a oltre 7.000 le auto del sultano del Brunei, curate anche con l’aiuto del fratello, il principe Jefri. Non si conosce con esattezza il numero effettivo, ma è di sicuro spropositato.

Gli esperti sostengono valgano complessivamente intorno ai 4-5 miliardi di dollari . All’incirca quanto il PIL del Montenegro, giusto per rendere l’idea. Nell’arco dei decenni sono emersi aneddoti di vario tipo, sui quali è, però, doveroso nutrire qualche dubbio. Ciò poiché solo in pochi hanno avuto l’onore e il privilegio di visitare questo luogo paradisiaco. Il sogno di qualsiasi appassionato, costellato da tirature limitate e pezzi unici, commissionati su misura a grandi aziende, piene di talento tra le relative fila.

Spesso i Costruttori abituati a interagire con certi clienti devono osservare vincoli di segretezza. Messo nero su bianco sui contratti redatti dalle migliori squadre di legali, le informazioni sensibili e confidenziali rimangono avvolte nel mistero. A dispetto di ciò, nel 2011 sono usciti degli scatti davvero interessanti. Sotto il nickname di Taffy, un utente ha condiviso gli scatti di una parte delle auto del sultano del Brunei. “Quelle foto sono state scattate da un amico nel 2001, quando gli fu dato il permesso di vedere le auto che sarebbero state messe all’asta. Ha passato solo un’ora, saltando molte parti del garage” .

McLaren, Ferrari e…

Tra i gioielli immortalati gli attenti osservatori hanno scorto tre McLaren F1 LM delle cinque costruite in totale. Sullo stato di conservazione, beh, si poteva fare di meglio. Complice la quantità esagerata di veicoli, una parte è stata lasciata andare, vittima di trascuratezza. Compare pure una Bentley , in condizioni discutibili, con la muffa sul volante.

Il legame tra la casa reale e il celebre marchio inglese persiste da decenni. In pieno anni Novanta, i numerosi ordini inviati da Hassanal Bolkiah e dal fratello, il principe Jefri, permisero alla Casa di evitare il fallimento. All’epoca, infatti, navigava in cattive acque. Le produzioni faticavano a riscuotere l’interesse del pubblico, a eccezione del facoltoso duo. Che delegò la realizzazione di almeno 23 vetture, tra cui B2, B3, Buccaneer, Grand Prix e Dominator.

Alla vasta collezione apparterebbero pure delle Ferrari , quali la Mythos, la F90 Speciale, la FX le 456 Venice Sedan ed Estate. Inoltre, viene attribuita la Cizeta V16T, l’ennesima italiana di un folto gruppo, costellato pure da esemplari quali la Jaguar XJ220 Pininfarina , la Bentley Val D’Isere, l’Aston Martin Vantage Special Series, la Bugatti EB110 SS e la Mercedes CLK GTR. Allora, siete un po’ invidiosi?

Sulla costa nord occidentale del Borneo – affacciato sul Mar Cinese Meridionale e al confine con la Malesia – sorge il piccolo sultanato islamico Nagara Brunei Darussalam, cioè “Dimora della Pace”, controllato dal Sultano del Brunei Kebawah Duli Yang Maha Mulia Paduka Seri Baginda Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Al-Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Almarhum Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, per gli amici Hassanal Bolkiah .

Il sultano, nel 1997, è stato decretato l’uomo più ricco del mondo con un patrimonio personale di 53 miliardi di dollari. Tutta la sua ricchezza deriva dal controllo economico del sultanato e dagli introiti dei numerosi pozzi di petrolio che ospita. Il Sultano del Brunei abita nel palazzo più grande del mondo di 200mila mq, dotato di 2.000 stanze, 257 bagni una sontuosa sala del trono e una sala per ricevimenti che potrebbe ospitare oltre 4 mila persone . In questa lussuosa dimora vive (e ha vissuto) in compagnia di 3 mogli, e 8 figli avuti dai diversi matrimoni.

La sua immagine è ovunque nel paese: si trova ritratto sulle banconote, monete, francobolli, e persino sulle gigantografie in divisa da ammiraglio della marina, da generale dell’esercito, dell’aeronautica o da capo della polizia.

Il Sultano del Brunei , Hassanal Bolkiah, rientra nella lista degli uomini più facoltosi del pianeta: basta pensare che, per il suo matrimonio, sembra si sia fatto costruire una Rolls Royce in oro zecchino . Promotore di uno stile di vita fatto di eccessi, nel linguaggio comune ormai il termine “sultano del Brunei” è diventato un vero sinonimo di ciò che rappresenta: sfarzo, lusso e magnificenza.

Secondo le stime di Forbes , il patrimonio complessivo del Sultano ammonterebbe intorno ai 20 miliardi di euro. La sua ricchezza è distribuita tra bene mobili e immobili, tra cui una collezione privata di auto d’epoca che supererebbe il valore di 300 milioni di dollari.

Inoltre, per la modica cifra di 1 miliardo di dollari, il Sultano ha fatto costruire un parco giochi personale , il Jerudong park , che lascia utilizzare ai suoi sudditi. Molte pop star di fama mondiale sono state invitate ad esibirsi nel parco di fronte al pubblico del sultanato, tutto a spese del sovrano. Il Sultano è un amante dei sigari e sembra che il suo preferito, il Gurkha Centurian, sia stato commissionato e fabbricato proprio per lui.

• The Sultan of Brunei Hassanal Bolkiah is currently the subject of widespread condemnation for making homosexuality punishable with the death penalty.
• The torrent of criticism got so loud Bolkiah backpedaled on Sunday, promising the law would never be enforced, but it still exists as legislation.
• But he was once a young, liberal "playboy" who embraced hedonism and freedom, despite being the head of the Muslim faith in the small southeast Asian nation.

The Sultan of Brunei, Hassanal Bolkiah, was widely condemned in April for ushering in new laws to punish homosexuality with death by stoning as part of a move to align the country with Sharia law, a strict interpretation of Islam. 

After a huge backlash from celebrities and Western governments alike, the sultan backpedaled this week , promising that the punishment will not be enforced. Brunei will, however, keep the law on its statute books, the Sultan added.

Before becoming an advocate for the strictest form of Islam, the 72-year-old sultan was once known for his lavish, liberal, and western lifestyle.

At one point the richest man on the planet, worth as much as $40 billion, his exploits included reportedly racing Ferraris at midnight through Brunei's capital, commissioning a 1,788 room palace, and spending $20,000 to get his hair cut.

Here's a look at the Sultan of Brunei's extravagant, fabulous life. 

Bolkiah was born on 15 July 1946, the son of Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien III.

Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien had 10 children, six daughters and four sons, with several wives, but chose Bolkiah to succeed him from an early age. 

The future sultan kept a low profile in his teens. He was home schooled and then sent to secondary school at The Victoria Institution, in Malaysia.

1965: After leaving school, Bolkiah married his cousin Pengiran Anak Saleha in an arranged marriage. He was 19.

The couple have had two sons and four daughters together. Bolkiah has four other children shared between his two other wives.

Bolkiah is the 29th sultan to come from the same family, one which was famous for marrying internally. 

In 1967, Bolkiah travelled to England to train at the UK's Royal Military Academy, in Sandhurst. While he was there, his father abdicated making him the new sultan.

Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien III stepped down in protest against encroaching communism and also demands from Britain for Brunei to be more democratic. 

Bolkiah ascended to the throne upon on his return in August 1968.

Despite becoming a married man and leader of the nation, Bolkiah did not let his nuptials get in the way of enjoying himself. He soon became famous the world over for spending his billion dollar fortune.

With his brother Prince Jefri, Bolkiah spent big in London's casinos and bought luxury cars, yachts, and hotels.

Jefri was notoriously bad with money, and said to be a bad influence on the newly appointed sultan.

Bolkiah commissioned his own private zoo — which has 30 Bengal tigers. The sultan entertains world leaders who visit Brunei with shows at the zoo.

The zoo contains falcons, flamingos and cockatoos which can play basketball, ride bicycles, sing, talk, and imitate other animals, the sultan's zoo keeper told The Bangkok Post.

He also got the world's most successful ever golfer, Jack Nicklaus, to design a golf course for him at one of his hotels.

But as Bolkiah got older, and took the head of state role more seriously, he had to deal with Prince Jefri's insatiable appetite for luxury.

Jefri — who was finance minister for much of 1980s and 1990s — spent tens of billions of dollars of the crown estate's money funding an even more lavish lifestyle than his brother.

He was sacked as a minister by the sultan in 1997, who accused him of embezzling as much as $16 billion.

Jefri's 150-foot yacht, called "Tits," was also seized by the the sultan.

The two small boats used to ferry people to and from it were called "Nipple 1" and "Nipple 2."

Prince Jefri's remaining assets were sold off by the crown in a 2001 auction. CNN reported it took six days to sell off over 10,000 items

The auction included, CNN said, one eight-foot bronze Trojan horse, several jacuzzi covered in gold plate, several statues of flamingos, a Comanche helicopter simulator, a plane, and an F1 race car.

In 1981, Bolkiah got married again to a non-royal flight attendant Mariam. The pair were married until 2003.

In 1984, Brunei gained formal independence from the UK, and Bolkiah wanted to mark the occasion like never before.

To celebrate, he commissioned a $600 million palace, known as "Istana Nurul Iman." It included a garage with space for 800 cars.

The 1,778-room palace covers an estimated 2.2 million square feet (50 acres) and was designed by architect Leandro Locsin.

The palace was named as the "world's largest residential palace" by Guinness World Records. It boasts 57 bathrooms and a huge, lavish throne room.

Around the same time, Bolkiah paid $70 million for this oil painting: "Young Girls at the Piano" by French Impressionist Pierre-Auguste Renoir.

The Sultan was often drawn into controversies surrounding his brother's excessive lifestyle. During the 1980s and 1990s Prince Jefri reportedly oversaw a harem of 40 young women.

In the book "Some Girls: My Life in a Harem," American woman Jillian Lauren said Prince Jefri recruited her for his harem when she was 18 and living in New York. 

She alleged that the Sultan, a married man, slept with women from the harem.

In 2014, Lauren told CNN : "I am a witness to the fact that the sultan was drinking, was committing adultery, was not exactly living on the straight and narrow."

The Brunei government have dismissed Lauren's claims, saying in a statement to CNN : "We vehemently deny the allegations."

In 1998, former Miss USA Shannon Marketic attempted to sue Bolkiah and Prince Jefri.

Marketic alleged she was forced to spend a month in the harem in dehumanizing conditions.

According to CNN, both brothers denied the allegations, with Bolkiah claiming he had never even met Marketic.

The case was dropped when courts "granted the brothers immunity from legal action, owing to their joint status as a foreign head of state," CNN said.

The Sultan is perhaps most famous for his love of lavish automobiles.

Bolkiah has 500 Rolls-Royces, and shares a collection of over 5,000 cars with Prince Jefri. When they were younger, the pair reportedly raced Ferrari super cars through Brunei's capital Bandar Seri Begawan in the middle of the night.

During the 1990s, the Sultan's family reportedly accounted for almost half of all Rolls-Royce purchases in the world.

He was awarded the Guinness World Record for the largest Rolls Royce collection in 2011. 

Bolkiah owns many more cars with a combined worth of $4 billion, including the 500 Rolls-Royces.

The collection includes a Lamborghini Murcielago LP640, Bentley Continental R, Ferrari Mythos concept car, both of the Ferrari 456 GT Sedans, the only right-hand drive Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR in the world, and five McLaren F1s.

The Sultan's gold royal wedding Rolls-Royce is one of a kind, with an open top and platform for an umbrella bearer.

In February of 1997 Bolkiah became Brunei's finance minister, after he sacked Prince Jefri for allegedly embezzling state funds.

Thanks to Brunei's huge oil reserves, Bolkiah was the richest man in the world from the mid 1980s until the 1990s. He lost his crown to Microsoft founder Bill Gates late in the 90s.

Bolkiah divorced his second wife in 2003, and became furious and humiliated when reports emerged she had been tricked out of $2.7 million by a fortune teller.

In 2005, the Sultan married his third wife, Malaysian TV anchor Azrinaz Mazhar Hakim. She was 33 years his junior. They divorced in 2010.

Bolkiah did not lose his penchant for excess even as he aged. He still often spends $20,000 for a single haircut.

The Times reported that Bolkiah flies out his favourite barber from London, where he works at the Dorchester hotel in Mayfair.

"He goes regularly, sometimes every three or four weeks. The sultan flies him first-class at a cost of about $12,000."

"Everything is paid for. Hotel, luxury food. It's a case of 'just keep signing, that's all'."

The barber is then given an envelope with thousands of dollars in, the Times said.

The Sultan also bought himself his own Boeing 747.

It cost at least $400 million, and was kitted out with $120 million worth of accessories, like solid gold wash basins.

He reportedly gave his daughter an Airbus A340 for her birthday.

Richard Behar wrote for FORTUNE magazine:

"Records from one North American hotel in 1995 show the Sultan's party using more than 100 rooms in four days, racking up a bill that topped $1 million." "Generally, the royals rent entire floors of hotels and don't venture downstairs until checkout day."

Bolkiah hit the headlines in April 2019, when Brunei announced that it would now punish homosexuality with death by stoning as part of a new penal code based on Shariah law first proposed in 2014.

But, the news went viral. And a boycott on nine luxury hotels owned by Brunei was endorsed by celebrities and politicians in the west.

In response, Brunei asked people to respect its decision, and said the law was just meant as a deterrent.

Brunei hit back — calling for "respect" from the international community.

The tiny Muslim nation said the new laws are meant to prevent rather than punish, and to safeguard family values, and admitted they will be very hard to enforce.

But on May 5 under immense international pressure, Bolkiah announced the punishment would never be enforced.

In a televised speech, the sultan said Allah would never hand down laws meant to inflict cruelty on others.

George Clooney, probably the most vocal celebrity voice against the law, said people need to keep up the boycott despite the assurances.

"This is a huge step forward after a giant leap backwards," he said. "As soon as the pressure dies down they could simply start the process of carrying out executions."

"So in reference to the boycott everyone should do what they feel is correct. For my family and me we simply can't walk away until this draconian law is no longer on the books."

Among the usual monochrome traffic, Ferraris are usually incredibly easy to spot. Their low-slung bodies, vibrant (often red) paintwork and eight or twelve-cylinder howl cut through the urban noise, drawing the attention of onlookers like nothing else on the road. Heredero de una dinastía de más de siete siglos de antigüedad, Haji Hassanal Bolkiah nació el 15 de julio de 1946 en Bandar Seri Begawan, la capital del sultanato. Posteriormente se casó con la ex azafata de la aerolínea Royal Brunei Arilines Mariam Abdul Aziz, a quien convirtió en su esposa secundaria, y es la madre del príncipe Abdul Mateen, un influencer de Instagram, donde miles de seguidores lo ven jugando al polo y viajando en yates y jets privados .

En 2003, después de 22 años de matrimonio, la sultana Mariam fue repudiada públicamente, de acuerdo al ritual “Talag Satu” permitido por la ley islámica, indemnizada y obligada abandonar el palacio real, donde no se la volvió a ver. Dos años después, el sultán sorprendió al casarse con la periodista y presentadora del canal TV3 de Malasia Arinaz Mazhar Hakim . Se divorciaron en 2010, tras el nacimiento de dos príncipes.

Sultan of brunei's wealth.

The Sultan of Brunei was once regarded as the world's richest man. His wealth in the early 1990s was estimated at $40 billion and some use a similar figure to describe his net worth and assets today. Other monarchies (such as the one in Saudi Arabia) control states worth more money but the money is considered an asset of the state, while the sultan of Brunei's money is closer to a personal asset even though it officially belongs to the state.

The Sultan of Brunei held the position of world's richest man for many years until he was displaced by Bill Gates. By the late 1990s the Sultan of Brunei had fallen to N. 3 as a result of falling oil prices and profligate spending by his brother Prince Jefri. By the early 2000s his fortune was maybe a three fourths of what it once was. In 2008, Forbes ranked him as the world’s fourth richest royal, with a net worth of $20 billion.

The Sultan of Brunei earns $100 a second from oil earning and investments. This works out to around $2 billion a year. His net worth fluctuates greatly depending on a number of factors, most importantly the price of oil and natural gas, which is where his money comes from.

the Sultan of Brunei has used his own money to help prop up currencies and the stock markets in Singapore and Malaysia during the Asian economic crisis in 1997-98. He reportedly sold at least $300 million of his assets to make loans to his Southeast Asia neighbors. He also supported the activities Ollie North, of Iran-Contra affair fame, during administration of U.S. President Reagan in the 1980s, with a $10 million donation.

The Sultan of Brunei used make headlines in London for his million dollar shopping sprees. When his country became independent in 1984 he treated himself to a $350 million palace. He also owns homes in England, the United States and elsewhere. See Brother Below.

The Sultan of Brunei and his family have indulged themselves in lavish parties, polo ponies, race horses, yachts and hundred of Rolls Royces and hosted a number or celebrities and beauty queens. The sultan paid Elton John, Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder, Bon Jovi and Tina Turner to come to Brunei and entertain him and his friends. In the mid 1990s the sultan and his brother were credited with supplying roughly half of Rolls-Royce’s sales income.

The sultan's extravagance is legendary. While playing polo with Britain's Prince Charles, the sultan once had his polo shoes delivered — by helicopter — to the palace field. The family of the Sultan of Brunei used to spend so much money (up to $500 million a year) at the London jeweler Asprey they decided to buy it. In November 1995 the sultan bought it for $375 million. Mark Seal wrote in Vanity Fair, the sultan erected a 1,788-room palace on 49 acres, “which is without equal in the world for offensive and ugly display,” in the words of one British magnate, and celebrated his 50th birthday with a blowout featuring a concert by Michael Jackson, who was reportedly paid $17 million, in a stadium built for the occasion. Prince Jefri’s inner circle refers to his brother, the Sultan of Brunei, a known as the "Big One," despite his small size. Mark Seal wrote in Vanity Fair, “The sultan’s biggest extravagance turned out to be his love for his youngest brother, Jefri, his constant companion in hedonism. They raced their Ferraris through the streets of Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital, at midnight, sailed the oceans on their fleet of yachts (Jefri named one of his Tits, its tenders Nipple 1 and Nipple 2), and imported planeloads of polo ponies and Argentinean players to indulge their love for that game, which they sometimes played with Prince Charles. They snapped up real estate like Monopoly pieces—hundreds of far-flung properties, a collection of five-star hotels (the Dorchester, in London, the Hôtel Plaza Athénée, in Paris, the New York Palace, and Hotel Bel-Air and the Beverly Hills Hotel, in Los Angeles), and an array of international companies (including Asprey, the London jeweler to the Queen, for which Jefri paid about $385 million in 1995, despite the fact that that was twice Asprey’s estimated market value or that Brunei’s royal family constituted a healthy portion of its business). Sultan of Brunei’s Palace and Properties

Istana Nurul Man is the lavish palace of the Sultan of Brunei and the world's largest residential palace. Competed in January 1984 and covering two million square feet, it cost $350 million and has domes gilded with 22-karat gold, 1,788 rooms, 257 bathrooms, gold-plated escalators, air-conditioned stables for the sultan’s Argentine polo ponies (he at one time had 200 of them), and an 800-car underground garage for the sultan's cars. It is larger than the Vatican. Situated on the banks of the Brunei River on the top of a hill overlooking the city, the palace is an enigmatic symbol of Brunei’s enduring monarchy and seat of the nation's government and a glittering example of Brunei’s majestic royal heritage. It is closed to the public except during the Haro Raya, when the Royal family greets the public. The palace also includes a banquet hall that can be expanded to accommodate up to 5,000 guests, a mosque accommodating 1,500 people and five swimming pools.

Sultan of Brunei's Las Vegas home: According to bornrich.com this estate with an official listing of $37.5 million with Zar Zanganeh (Vegas Fine Estates) was purportedly built for occupation by the Sultan of Brunei for his younger brother, Prince Jefri Bolkiah. It is currently owned by the president of Consumer Credit Services, Inc., Eric Petersen, who had purchased it for $14 million in 2004. Location: This estate is located very close to the Las Vegas Strip. Being one of the biggest homes in Las Vegas, it has 17 bedroom suites with attached bathrooms. There is a master bedroom and a total of 36 bathrooms in the house. The parking lot has the capacity to hold 50 vehicles and the garage holds 11 cars. The Las Vegas property sits on 11.2 acres of well-developed estate. This includes an international-sized swimming pool, swan pond and large gardens with an arcade of palms. The St. John’s Lodge home in London has been estimated to value £110 million. Built about 200 years ago in 1812, the 'lodging' of the Sultan is one among the only two villas (the other being The Holme) from the Regent's Park conceived by John Nash. This residence is located on the Inner Circle in Regent's Park. Till the year 1965, this was part of the St Marylebone Metropolitan Borough in London, but today is a part of Westminster. The home is constituted by three connected buildings. Two of these buildings, known as the main house and second house are in fact occupied by guests and the service staff. The Sultan's 'room' is located in the separate private building. It is massive and measures about 3,500 sq ft in living area. The St.John's Lodge is surrounded by the largest and most beautiful gardens of London. It is open to public and presents a real slice of environmental heaven. The Sultan of Brunei used to own a lavish mansion near the Sunset Boulevard area in the Beverley Hills, California. Valued at $38 million, this Spanish colonial styled mansion was built in 1927 and served as the temporary residence for the Sultan on the rare occasions when he used to visit California. The sprawling property was purchased in 1987 and the royal hired famous interior decorators Tim Morrison and Tom Proctor to renovate the home which received an extensive facelift. The Sultan’s former palatial estate covers almost two acres of ground. The main mansion is a two storied building spread over 14,000 square feet of living space and the living quarters consists of eight bedrooms, living room ,dining area, dressing room, library, modern gourmet kitchen and eleven bathrooms. The outdoor part of the estate features a covered porch, open patio and beautifully landscaped gardens. The cavernous garage can fit in 30 big cars at a time. The entire house is steeped in luxury and its grandiose interiors bear ample signs of its royal past. Most of the bedrooms have been equipped with stone fireplaces and expensive Malibu tiles lines the floors of most rooms. The house has been decorated using expensive antique furniture. An infinity edge swimming pool along with a cabana is situated in the villa’s outdoor area. Most of the bathrooms have been fitted with Jacuzzis and there is also an indoor spa. Sultan of Brunei’s Jet Collection

The Sultan of Brunei owns his own private Boeing 747-400, Boeing 767-200 and Airbus A340-200. According to bornrich.com: The Sultan’s private jet Boeing 747-400 is no less than a palace itself. A living room, a bed room with details of gold and precious gold in the jet could only belong to a Sultan. The Sultan owns Boeing 767 is a mid-size, wide-body twin-engine jet airliner. It is designed with deluxe room including a full and complete interior office. The "Airbus A340-200 seats up to 261 passengers in a three-class cabin layout have a range of 7,450 nautical miles (13,800 km). It is the only jet with wingspan measuring greater than the length of the fuselage. This was launched for long and thin routes, especially over water. ***

The sultan once ordered a 747 with several bedrooms and stalls so he could transport himself and his polo ponies back and forth between Britain and Brunei. Boeing was reportedly working a system of disposing the horse’s urine when the deal was canceled.

Strictly speaking, his majesty is not a die-hard car enthusiast, but his playboy younger brother Prince Jefri and his eldest son Prince Haakem are. They buy and play the supercars like toys, get bored very soon, then buy new ones and store the old ones in any of the 4 huge garages (more like a warehouse in terms of volume) for, perhaps, forever. Why did they buy so many McLaren and Dauer? Perhaps they like to share with their relatives. Perhaps their wives like to drive them for shopping. Perhaps they want to have a few spare cars when the normally used one is under servicing. Most likely, perhaps because money is nothing to his majesty. /

One whole section of his hangar-size garage is dedicated for storing the world's most exclusive and rarest Mercs. Being the absolute Sultan of a country comes with its own benefits. His collection includes models which are not meant for public consumption, like the special S-class Touring model designed just for the Sultan and a yellow Mercedes Sprinter with a red interior. He also has 100s of 1996-1997 model Mercedes-Benz 500 sedans and 1995-97 500 SELs and SLs, all black. The Sultan got himself the only right hand drive Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR in the world. The Sultan has Ferraris which were just meant to be concept cars. However, when one has money to spend than any concept can take a physical form. His 2 fully operational Ferrari Mythos are just an example of that. His Ferrari 456 is one of the perfect mix of elegance and indulgence. He got himself a factory made four-door sedan and wagon version of the Italian stallion. His other Ferraris include names like Ferrari F40, Ferrari FX and both of the Ferrari 456 GT Sedans. He also has the Ferrari Testarossa F90, Ferrari F50 Bolide Tub by Pininfarina and Ferrari 550 Barchetta Speciale among others. ***

One cannot possibly even imagine a car collection without the elegance of BMWs. The Sultan also thinks the same way and therefore has a couple 100 of these beauties in his private collection. Going by the sheer numbers of Rolls-Royces he has, it wouldn’t be too far-fetched to say that these are the favorite cars of Sultan. He has so much love for these high-performance and super-luxurious cars, that he keeps a Rolls-Royce in front of his palace with the engine running 24-7. Needless to add, all his cars are bullet-proof and feature state-of-the-art technology. ***

The biggest home for cars? Emperors and empires have existed throughout world history. But here is an emperor and an empire with a difference — a difference so huge that it would not have been even imagined had it not existed! It is not a coincidence that theThe Empire Hotel in Brunei is witness to the greatest empire of cars. A garage, the size of five aircraft hangars, holds within it a collection of 7000 of the world' finest cars with a combined estimated value of $5 billion! ***

It would be misleading to call this palace of cars as a garage but even if we were to call it so functionally, it is much more than that. It has separate wings to hold the different brands. Thus, there is a Mercedes wing, a Rolls Royce wing, a Lamborghini wing, a Jaguar wing, a BMW wing, a Ferrari wing, a Porsche wing, a Bentley wing and so on! Some of the cars housed here are the only ones of their kind on the face of the earth like thePorsche Carma and the right-hand drive Mercedes CLKGTR. Several concept cars like the Ferrari Mythos and Pininfarina-designed Jaguar XJ-220 also grace the 'garage'. ***

The cars also seem to share the royal life of the Sultan. They barely get out of the garage because of two reasons: 1) A car parked all the way at the back may need almost 1.5 hours to be brought out. 2) With a ratio of more than 100 cars per individual in the Sultan's family and court, a car gets to be used only thrice a year even probabilistically! ***

Michael Jackson and the Sultan of Brunei's Birthday in 1996

The Sultan of Brunei celebrated his 50th birthday in 1996 with a $25 million banquet for 3,000 people, including Michael Jackson and Prince Charles, in one hall of his 1,778-room palace. A London production company was hired to make a wide-screen, state of-the-art home video of the event. The capital was decorated with colored lights, flags and bunting. The birthday was shown on the Star Channel.

Jackson was said to be the sultans's favorite pop start. For the 50the birthday party Jackson was paid an estimated $15 to $20 million to give three free concerts at an amusement park in Bandar Seri Begawan. See Music

Describing the party, AP reported: The Sultan of Brunei "arrived in a black Rolls Royce. Cannons boomed. Getting out of the car, the sultan greeted Charles with a grin. Jackson wasn't seen. Later Prince Charles flew into the depths of the rain forest in one of the sultan’s helicopters to visit a nature project before returning to the banquet...Charles...presented the sultan with a walking stick and an ornamental silver box with a water color painting inlaid into the lid he painted himself."

Describing the Sultan of Brunei’s 60th birthday celebration in 2006, Nick Meo wrote in The Times, “The shriek of bagpipes swirled through the tropical air. Hassanal Bolkiah ha 77 anni e da oltre mezzo secolo è il sultano del Brunei: il suo nome è quasi leggendario, così come le sue favolose ricchezze

Hassanal Bolkiah, il ricchissimo sultano del Brunei, è a quanto pare interessato - come hanno raccontato Daniela Polizzi e Mario Gerevini su Corriere - all’acquisto della splendida berlusconiana  Villa Certosa . Secondo indiscrezioni, confermate però da più fonti, il plurimilionario 77enne, dal 1967 alla guida della piccola monarchia assoluta di stampo islamico sull’isola del Borneo, sarebbe andato personalmente in Sardegna a visitare la proprietà che fu del Cavaliere. Ancora non si sa, però, se il possibile acquisto sia per sé o come regalo a uno dei suoi figli, Adbul Mateen, che si è sposato lo scorso gennaio con festeggiamenti durati 10 giorni e praticamente senza paragoni in termini di sfarzo e munificenza.

Bolkiah è stato preparato al ruolo di sovrano  alla Victoria Institution di Kuala Lumpur, in Malesia, oltre che alla Royal Military Academy di Sandhurst, in Inghilterra . Il suo regno dura da più di mezzo secolo e in questo arco di tempo il sultano ha avuto tempo per unirsi in matrimonio con tre donne, tutte mogli ufficiali, diventando padre di 12 figli. La prima consorte, come da tradizione, è sua cugina di primo grado Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha , con la quale è sposato dal 1965. La seconda moglie, invece, è stata Mariam binti Abdul Aziz , una hostess della Royal Brunei Airlines dalla quale il sultano ha divorziato nel 2003, dopo che era trapelata la notizia che la donna si era fatta truffare di 2,7 milioni di dollari da un indovino. Nell'agosto del 2005 il posto di Mariam è stato preso da una presentatrice della TV3 malese, Azrinaz Mazhar Hakim . Anche questa consorte, però, non ha retto molto e la coppia reale ha divorziato nel 2010. Alle due ex mogli Balkiah ha stato tolto il titolo nobiliare, oltre che il lauto stipendio mensile.

Il patrimonio e le collezioni

Quello del sultano del Brunei è un patrimonio immenso che annovera proprietà in tutto il mondo, oltre a una celebre collezione di auto stimata nel suo valore in circa cinque miliardi di euro. Secondo il Guinness dei primati, la collezione del sultano conta 500 Rolls-Royce , il che la rende la più grande collezione mondiale di questo marchio. Nel 2007 il Daily Mirror  aveva tentato di elencare tutte le altre automobili della collezione: 531 Mercedes-Benz, 367 Ferrari, 362 Bentley, 185 Bmw, 177 Jaguar, 160 Porsche e 20 Lamborghini. Da allora possiamo immaginare che il numero dei veicoli sia aumentato. La visita in Sardegna, inoltre, sarebbe avvenuta con il suo Boeing 747-400, placcato in oro, dal valore di circa 233 milioni di dollari. Bulkiah però possiede anche altri 6 aerei più piccoli e due elicotteri, che sa pilotare lui stesso.  Inoltre, il sultano gestisce un parco di divertimenti da 3 miliardi di dollari, chiamato Jerudong Park, e la sua residenza ufficiale è il palazzo Istana Nurul Iman, dal valore di oltre 600 milioni di dollari : 1.788 stanze e 257 bagni circondati da un parco di 200 mila metri quadrati, costruiti nel 1984 per celebrare l’indipendenza formale del Brunei dal Regno Unito.

La giovinezza scapestrata...

Ma il lungo regno di Bulkiah non è solo luci (date dal riverbero del tanto oro che ricopre un po’ tutto quello che circonda lui e la sua numerosa famiglia). Negli anni infatti non sono mancati gli scandali. Appena diventato sultano, incapace di distinguere gli amici dai sicofanti, il sultano, all'epoca 41enne, lo si vedeva spesso nelle bische di Londra, mentre finanziava le prime imprese del trafficante d'armi saudita Adnan Khashoggi. La sua più grande stravaganza, però, si è rivelata essere l'amore per il fratello minore, Jefri. I due venivano visti sfrecciare a mezzanotte con le loro Ferrari per le strade di Bandar Seri Begawan, la capitale, e solcare gli oceani con la loro flotta di yacht, oltre a invitare carichi di pony da polo e giocatori argentini per assecondare la loro passione per questo gioco, che a volte praticavano con il principe Carlo. 

... e l’avvicinamento alla Sharia

Durante gli anni Ottanta e Novanta del secolo scorso, poi, sembra che il principe Jefri supervisionasse un harem di 40 giovani donne . Questo almeno secondo la scrittrice americana Jillian Lauren, che ha sempre sostenuto di essere stata reclutata dal principe quando aveva 18 anni e viveva a New York. La testata Insider  ha elencato inoltre alcune delle stravaganze del sultano: dal taglio di capelli costato 20 mila euro alla costruzione di un bizzarro zoo personale; all’assegno da 16 milioni di dollari staccato per far cantare Michael Jackson al suo 50esimo genetliaco. Ma c’è di peggio. Se per se stesso (e suo fratello) il sultano ha sempre assicurato ampie libertà, non vale lo stesso per i suoi sudditi. Hassanal Bolkiah, infatti, nel 2019 ha introdotto una legge che puniva l'omosessualità con la morte per lapidazione , nell'ambito di un'iniziativa volta ad allineare il Paese alla Sharia, una rigida interpretazione dell'Islam. Sulla scia delle tante critiche internazionali, il sultano aveva però fatto marcia indietro, promettendo che la punizione non sarebbe mai stata applicata, pur rimanendo legge nei registri statutari.

The Sultan of Brunei, Hassanal Bolkiah , is considering the purchase of Villa Certosa. Silvio Berlusconi's Villa Certosa overlooks the gulf of Porto Rotondo. It has an extension of 4500 square meters, 126 rooms and a 120 hectare park . The residence has seen the most powerful men in the world hosted in its rooms, including former US president George Bush, former British prime minister Tony Blair and Russian president Vladimir Putin.

The future of Villa Certosa remains shrouded in mystery, with speculation surrounding who its next owner will be and how the home will be used in the future. Whatever its final destination, the change of ownership will mark a new chapter for this iconic home, continuing to capture the imagination of all those who appreciate the marriage of luxury, history and global power.

Viaggio nel Sultanato del Brunei

Il mio viaggio nel Borneo continua con il sultanato del Brunei , dopo aver trascorso qualche giorno nella vicina Miri , in Malesia. Il Negara Brunei Darussalam (ovvero la terra dove dimora la pace ) è un piccolissimo paese situato in mezzo al Borneo malese, reso ricchissimo grazie ai numerosi pozzi di petrolio dislocati su tutto il territorio (il Brunei è infatti posizionato al quinto posto nella lista dei paesi più ricchi al mondo per prodotto interno lordo pro capite, anche se non si direbbe e più avanti vi spiego pure perché).

Sono arrivata nella capitale Bandar Seri Begawan  via terra e ho passato il confine con la Malesia in modo veloce e indolore. Una cosa buffa però è successa: uno degli agenti di frontiera del Brunei è salito sul pullman, ha ignorato tutti gli altri passeggeri (malesi o locali del Brunei) ed è venuto dritto da me chiedendomi, vista la mia nazionalità italiana, se avessi del vino (!?) con me: «You’re Italian, right? And are you carrying any wine?» Mi sono trattenuta dal ridergli in faccia, perché la situazione era un po’ comica e gli ho detto che no, non stavo portando nessun vino nello zaino. In Brunei infatti, essendo un paese musulmano, è vietata l’importazione di alcol e carni non halal.

Il viaggio è proseguito per altre tre ore attraversando quasi il paese per intero, ma il panorama era così interessante che non ho smesso di guardare fuori dal finestrino. Abbiamo fatto una piccola sosta a Seria, una minuscola cittadina a un’ora di distanza dalla capitale Bandar Seri Begawan . A BSB vi consiglio di prendere un albergo in zona super centrale e voi direte «Vabbè, genio.», ma aspettate, ci sono molti validissimi motivi. A BSB dopo le 18 non ci sono più autobus e di taxi nemmeno l’ombra (anche di giorno!), quindi sarà molto difficile spostarvi. Io ho fatto chilometri su chilometri a piedi, un giorno sono arrivata a fare 35.000 passi girando in lungo e in largo la città. Inoltre non c’è molto da vedere e quasi tutto si concentra nella zona centrale.

La città è piccola e sembra deserta. La foto qui sopra è stata scattata a metà mattina e come potete vedere in strada non c’era nessuno. Mi ha fatto un effetto stranissimo. Non ci sono passanti e circolano pochissime macchine. I negozi sono vuoti, le moschee pure.

Al mattino presto sono stata al mercato Kianggeh e ho capito una cosa: gli abitanti di BSB stanno tutti lì. Altrimenti non si spiega. Il mercato è molto carino, vivace e tutti sono gentili e sorridenti.

La cosa che desideravo vedere da anni, e che non mi ha affatto deluso, era la splendida moschea Omar Ali Saifuddin , che è un po’ anche il simbolo della città. È una moschea islamica costruita su un lago artificiale a ridosso del fiume Brunei, composta da meravigliosi marmi italiani e cupole dorate.

Ho preso poi una barchetta da un  barcaiolo random e ho attraversato il fiume per raggiungere il Kampong Ayer , ovvero il villaggio sull’acqua. Qui vivono circa 30.000 persone divise in sub villaggi, in un labirinto di passerelle e palafitte che fanno del Kampong Ayer il più grande villaggio sull’acqua del mondo. La maggior parte della gente qui vive in povertà e le norme igieniche sono scarsissime, l’acqua è incredibilmente sporca e inquinata.

La visita alla residenza del Sultano, l’ Istana Nurul Iman  (ovvero il palazzo della luce della fede ), è assolutamente inutile, se non avete tempo potete benissimo saltarla, dato che non vedrete altro che il cancello e le guardie che lo pattugliano. Il palazzo del Sultano, nonché sede del governo, è la più grande residenza privata del mondo. Conta 1.788 camere da letto, 257 bagni, una sala per ricevimenti espandibile che può contenere fino a 5.000 ospiti, una moschea per 1.500 persone, un garage da 110 macchine, un stalla con aria condizionata per il 200 pony da polo del Sultano, 5 piscine, 564 lampadari, 44 scalinate e 18 ascensori. Na cosetta, insomma.

Il mercato notturno di G adong invece è una tappa immancabile di ogni viaggio a BSB. Apre verso le 16 fino alle 23 e vi consiglio di andare a stomaco vuoto, perché è letteralmente il paradiso del cibo! È un mercato coperto composto da tre corsie di bancarelle che cucinano sul momento cibo squisito, fresco e locale. Io credo di aver mangiato tutto il possibile, nonché il char kway teow più brutto, ma più BUONO della storia dei char kway teow. Sono uscita con una panza mai vista prima, ma felice, molto felice!

Sulla via del ritorno a piedi, perché a quell’ora non c’erano né bus né taxi, ho fatto una sosta alla moschea  Jame’Asr Hassanil Bolkiah , splendida anche questa e meravigliosamente illuminata.

Dal Brunei ho proseguito il mio viaggio in Borneo verso l’isola malese di Labuan che ho raggiunto via ferry. Il terminal dista un’ora di autobus da BSB e il biglietto per il ferry costa B$17 (€10). Il viaggio verso Labuan dura circa un’ora e prima di imbarcarvi dovrete passare i controlli passaporto e bagagli. Il prossimo post sarà dedicato proprio a Labuan !

Prima di chiudere vorrei fare due considerazioni sul Brunei , perché mi ha lasciata un po’ turbata. Avevo grandi aspettative verso questo paese, volevo andarci da sempre e me lo immaginavo completamente diverso. Essendo posizionato al quinto posto nella classifica dei paesi più ricchi al mondo dopo Qatar, Lussemburgo, Singapore e Norvegia mi sarei aspettata un paese visibilmente ricco o almeno simile ai suoi compagni di graduatoria. E invece no. Il Brunei è sporco e apparentemente povero. Per capirci di più ho fatto qualche ricerca, ma praticamente da nessuna parte sul web se ne parla. Possibile che nessuno si sia mai fatto questa domanda? Possibile che nessun giornalista ne abbia mai scritto un articolo? A quanto pare no. Ho cercato quindi di risalire alla possibile causa di questa strana condizione chiarendomi le idee sul Sultano e su come governi il paese.

Il sultanato del Brunei è una monarchia assoluta e di conseguenza tutti i poteri sono esercitati dal Sultano , tale  Kebawah Duli Yang Maha Mulia Paduka Seri Baginda Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Al-Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Almarhum Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien , per gli amici Hassanal Bolkiah, qui sotto ritratto con la moglie (nonché sua cugina di primo grado). Il Sultano ha dodici figli in totale, frutto delle sue due unioni precedenti e di quella con la moglie attuale. Il suo patrimonio, secondo la rivista Forbes, ammonta attualmente a 22 miliardi di dollari , decretandolo così come il monarca più ricco al mondo. Nel 1997 fu l’uomo più ricco del mondo con un patrimonio personale di 53 miliardi di dollari. La sua ricchezza deriva dal suo totale e assoluto controllo economico del paese e dagli introiti dei numerosi pozzi di petrolio sparsi per il paese. Secondo la costituzione del Brunei il Sultano è il capo dello stato con pieni poteri esecutivi,  nonché Primo ministro, Ministro della Difesa e Ministro delle Finanze. Nel 2006 fu accusato di aver modificato la costituzione in modo da rendersi infallibile sotto la legge del Brunei.

Leggendo le varie notizie su internet ho capito che non ne avrei ricavato nulla di che, quindi sono andata a fare domande direttamente dalle persone del posto. Ebbene, nemmeno loro mi sono state di aiuto. A quanto pare sembra sia un argomento tabù e che nessuno ne voglia parlare. È sempre così nei paesi poveri e repressi, la popolazione ha paura di dire la sua, come se potesse essere punita per aver espresso un’opinione. L’ultimo giorno a BSB aspettavo che il pullman partisse e uno degli autisti degli autobus mi ha chiesto se stessi viaggiando da sola e da dove venissi. Era l’alba e non avevo troppa voglia di parlare. Poi però ho pensato che quella poteva essere l’ultima occasione per cavare qualche cosa di interessante dalla bocca di un locale e ho cominciato a fargli le domande alle quali cercavo risposte. Il tizio mi ha detto che la gente qui sopravvive, ci sono molti poveri, i ricchi sono pochi e vivono fuori dalla città nelle loro ville. Le persone normali non possono giocare con la politica, non devono immischiarsi con essa, né con le cose del Sultano. I politici sono corrotti, avidi e traditori (tutto il mondo è paese). Alla mia domanda «Ma il Sultano com’è? È bravo?» Lui ha risposto con un secco ‘no comment’, ma mi ha comunque fatto vedere la foto che si è fatto insieme a lui tutto sorridente durante un evento. Mh, ok. Dice che ci sono telecamere ovunque e che tutto e tutti sono sorvegliati. I cittadini ricevono parecchi benefit dallo stato, per esempio non pagano le tasse, la sanità è gratuita e l’educazione pure, sia nel Brunei, che all’estero, dove il governo copre tutte le spese; una volta finiti gli studi però bisogna tornare a casa e contribuire allo stato. Insomma nemmeno lui si è sbilanciato più di tanto, ha raccontato le cose senza mai andare oltre, senza mai dare un’opinione troppo personale, ma almeno ho potuto sentire qualcosa di vero tramite le parole di un locale.

Questo posto mi ha lasciata un po’ stranita, non ho avvertito grandi vibrazioni, non ho provato grandi emozioni, ma anzi mi ha lasciata con numerosi dubbi e perplessità. Sono comunque contenta di aver visitato questo paese che sognavo di vedere da tanto tempo e sono pure contenta che mi abbia fatto riflettere, perché altrimenti sai che noia se tutti i posti che visitiamo fossero semplicemente WOW, no?

No infatti sai che noia..però come si era detto, ci si aspettava una cosa più Dubai, invece sembra più Malesia. Ma va bene così, il mondo è vario, è bello anche vedere che le aspettative non corrispondono sempre alla realtà- anzi, mi sa mai alla realtà. Tutto questo per dire che: interessante questo post sul Brunei!

Ciao! Ma sai che non lo so? Quel che è certo è che non ho trovato nulla di sostanzioso 🙁 la cosa migliore è sempre parlare con i locals!

Ciao, ho letto con molto interesse queste tue righe ma in tutto ciò non ho capito quanto sei stata in Brunei e Borneo 😀 Per un 6/7gg da solo in Borneo arrivando a Kota Kinabalu e volendo vedere natura, Orango e fare un salto nel Brunei cosa consigli? Pensavo anche di fare una capatina a Sandakan e zone limitrofe ma forse è troppo. Non avendo molti giorni a disposizione giorni pensavo di noleggiare una macchina o uno scooter per ottimizzare i tempi. Considera che dovrò ripartire per Singapore e lo farei da Miri (che non mi sembra nulla di che leggendo il tuo post, Lambir Park a parte) o da Kota Kinabalu stessa.

Ciao, in una settimana ce la fai secondo me, io feci Miri, Brunei e Labuan.

In Brunei è vietato parlare di politica, c’è un sultano e basta agli abitanti, ricevono moltissimi benifici come è stato detto. E’ un sultanato quindi tutto ruota attorno alla religione, il paese si ferma ogni venerdì e tutti i giorni si prega 5 volte. Quando si arriva con la compagnia di bandiera già sull’aereo prima della partenza si prega. Oltre a questo aspetto la natura c’è, magnifica e grandiosa. I giri nella foresta pluviale sono imperdibili, l’incontro con le pochissime tribu Iban è davvero indescrivibile. Non bisogna fermarsi nella capitale, è piccola e c’è poco da fare. Bisogna muoversi con le auto perchè i mezzi pubblici sono carenti e li usano solo gli stranieri che lavorano lì. Ci sono battelli che portano in posti meravigliosi. Certo la vita notturna non esiste, i bar ecc. chiudono presto e si vedono in giro solo cinesi. I malesi sono nelle loro case, enormi, a far feste ospitanto amici. Comunque hanno aperto tantissimi locali e ristoranti nuovi e se si vuole fare qualcosa bisogna entrare nei grossi mall, o all’Empire.

Las celebraciones han durado una semana

Las imágenes de la fastuosa boda de la hija del sultán de Brunéi

La princesa fadzillah lubabul y su ya marido, abdullah nabil mahumoud al-hashimi, celebraron este domingo una recepción nupcial.

El sultanato de Brunéi ha desplegado todo su ceremonial y fastuosidad para la celebración de la primera boda real del año: la de la princesa Fadzillah Lubabul,  de 36 años, y Abdullah Nabil Mahmoud Al-Hashimi.  Ella es hija del monarca, uno de los hombres más ricos del planeta, y de su segunda esposa, la exazafata Penigran Isteri Hajah Mariam, con la que estuvo casado entre 1982 y 2003 . Las diferentes ceremonias tradicionales han durado varios días, pero el acto central, la boda propiamente dicha tuvo lugar el pasado viernes. Dos días después, los recién casados quisieron agasajar a sus invitados con una recepción.  Las imágenes de este enlace real ven ahora la luz, donde se puede apreciar los trajes tradicionales, las impresionantes joyas de la novia y el lujo de esta Corte de la isla de Borneo.

La Princesa se casó en la conocida ceremonia Majlis Istiadat Akad Nijah Diraja , que significa la boda real. La cremonia tuvo lugar en la mezquita del sultán Omar Ali Saifuddien en Bandar Seri Begawan, la capital del país, y solo en presencia del novio, que pronunció sus votos frente a la asamblea de hombres, casi todos miembros de la Familia Real.  El sultán Hassanal Bolkiah estaba en la primera fila y actuó como wali , el representante de su hija en la boda. Después de que los novios pronunciaran sus votos se dispararon 17 cañonazos en la capita l, con el fin de hacer pública a la población que ya se había producido la unión. A lo largo de toda la semana pasada las ceremonias se fueron produciendo y concluyeron con un banquete y una oración como colofón a la boda.

Ha sido el príncipe Mateen, hermano de la novia, el que ha compartido con gran orgullo algunas imágenes del evento nupcial junto con el siguiente mensaje: "Felicidades a los recién casados. Estoy muy feliz por ustedes dos. Le deseo mucho amor a mi hermosa hermana",  ha escrito. En las instantáneas se ve a la Princesa luciendo un vestido blanco de manga larga con un increíble collar con gran colgante. Sobre el velo, también blanco, una tiara de diamantes de grandes dimesiones.  El novio también fue vestido de blanco con los característicos tocados de Brunéi, mientras que su ya cuñado visitó un uniforme militar. En otra de las imágenes se ve a la novia, acompañada por un gran cortejo solo de mujeres caminando hacia su padre. En la última imagen, realizada en blanco y negro, se les ve en uno de los salones de palacio charlando animadamente con algunos familiares.

Todo comenzó el pasado 16 de enero con la ceremonia  Istiadat Bersuruh Diraja, que consiste en iniciar el proceso de matrimonio. Una especie de propuesta formal de matrimonio que finaliza con el visto bueno oficial del sultán. Le siguieron otros fastos como la conocida como 'ceremonia del polvo', que consiste en ungir a los novios colocando en sus manos polvos de colores y aceite.  Ponen sus manos abiertas sobre un cojín colocado sobre sus rodillas, para protegerles de posibles manchas. Durante varias horas, todos los miembros de la Familia Real y el resto de invitados desfilan frente a ellos y se ponen polvo en sus manos y varias gotas de aceite. Fue el 31 de diciembre de 2021, cuando Palacio anunció la boda.

La princesa Fadzillah es la capitana del equipo nacional de baloncesto y tiene tres hermanos de padre y madre,  el príncipe Azim, que murió en 2020 a los 38 años y era un productor de cine y amigo de muchas celebrities , la princesa Ademah y el príncipe Abdul Mateen. En total,  el sultán de Brunéi tiene 11 hijos de tres mujeres diferentes . Además de ser el monarca de esta nación de la isla de Borneo ejerce como primer ministro, ministro de Defensa, ministro de Finanzas y cabeza de la religión islámica de Brunéi.  Lleva en el trono desde hace 54 años y la crisis del petróleo de 1973 le convirtió en el hombre más rico del mundo. Durante más de una década encabezó la lista de millonarios de la revista Forbes .
