Greece Yacht Charter Reviews with 12knots

“We had a great time in Greece”

We had a great time in Greece, the first three days we had constant 20-25knots of wind, so we were able to do a lot of sailing. The boat was also in good condition and everything in working order…the boat did however look a bit older than a 2018 mode…

Greece Yacht Charters

Greece is a country in Southeast Europe, which is located in the Balkans. The country is embossed in four seas: the Aegean Sea, the Ionian Sea, the Cretan Sea, and the Mediterranean Sea . Due to its advantageous location, Greece possesses one of the longest coastlines in the world. This outstanding feature makes the country an incredibly famous sailing destination. Beautiful golden beaches along the island, emerald transparent waters, pine forests in the mountains, and extremely pleasant weather will not leave any sailor indifferent. Deciding to charter a shining yacht, you make an investment in unforgettable memories and the desire to come back as a matter of course.

The reasons for which one must visit Greece are difficult to count as it has a lot to offer for everyone. Rich history, glorious past, impressive ancient buildings, delicious food and wine, an abundance of celebrations and festivals are waiting for you to explore the picturesque region. The pristine nature of Athens, Volos, Corfu, Kavala, and other Greek cities and perfect weather conditions create an ideal opportunity to rent a boat and melt into the pleasure.

Sailing Conditions in Greece

Being situated in Southeast Europe, Greece welcomes sailors from around the globe to feel all the benefits of the Mediterranean climate. Hot and dry summers with rare precipitation and clear skies provide a good opportunity for yacht rental without any fear of possible rains and extreme winds. The average temperature during the summer period never drops below 20 ºC even at night. It is impossible to miss such great weather and not to go far in the sea on your sailboat to enjoy the 30 ºC heat in the daytime. Greek winters are usually colder, especially in those areas that are close to mountains. But they are not lingering and not so cold to somehow disturb dedicated sailors. The sailing season usually starts in March and continues up to November, bringing different sailing conditions to the island.

Best Times for Vacation in Greece

Having an intention to make the most of your sailboat vacation in the breathtaking destination, it is necessary to get acquainted with the weather conditions of the desired period. As a rule, the peak season of sailing occurs in the summer months and up to the end of September . This time features extremely high air and water temperature and a huge number of sailors even in the remote marinas. By the way, Greek summers are an ideal time for those who are ready to forget about sleep and party the whole night. One of the most important things to consider is that in July, the northern wind Meltemi comes to the shore and creates many hazardous obstacles for sailing.

Spring and autumn wind speeds and summer conditions force you to choose this time period if you are looking for peace and quiet. There is no extreme heat and strong winds, as well as no abundance of people. You still can enjoy going bareboat without any unpleasant conditions and immerse yourself into the same active and loud festivals and celebrations.

Sailing Difficulty Level

Greece has already gained its high popularity as one of the world’s best sailing destinations . Because of its climate and location, the country represents great sailing options for beginners and professional sailors alike. The weather changes require sailors to explore the weather forecast beforehand to select the desired time for coming and know what to expect. The level of difficulty is mostly predetermined by the Meltemi wind of 6-8 force. Blowing from July to September may scary fresh sailors and even become a challenge for experienced professionals. If you are not highly skillful and just do not have enough confidence to manage the vessel by yourself, consider booking a boat in spring or autumn. The absence of powerful winds will not spoil your first sailing experience but contribute to positive impressions.

If you are still not ready to face the open water, 12 Knots is glad to provide you with the help of a qualified skipper and an opportunity to hire a crew . Being focused on the needs and desires of every sailor, we offer either a skipper to help to refresh the memories of handling a boat or a complete training process in our sailing school. Both options are delivered at their best quality and reasonable price.

Main Charter Bases

Greece is an incredibly important sailing destination for 12 Knots. Welcoming thousands of happy sailors every year, the country has a lot of well-equipped marinas and good mooring options. Depending on the desired part of the country, preferred city, and climate peculiarities, you may select a perfect one. The team of 12 Knots spreads their professional services on more than 30 bases along the coast. You may rent a yacht or boat at bases situated in the most famous Greek cities and islands:

  • Santorini  and many others

Boat Types for Charters

Having a great number of bases in possession, 12 Knots aims to provide sailors with powerful sailboats from leading manufacturers. Approximately 6,000 vessels are now available for charter in Greece. Sailing yachts, catamarans, powerboats, gulets, and houseboats are waiting for your booking. Do not hesitate and contact our team to become an owner of a white shining boat at a good cost. It is advisable to perform booking beforehand to avoid disappointment and misunderstanding.

Other Information about Greece Sailing

Before diving into the images of future perfect sailing vacations, every sailor should be aware of some essential information about the intended place.

  • The official language is Greek, although English is also widely spoken, especially in tourist places.
  • Greece is the Euro zone; that’s why the official currency is Euro.
  • Greece is under the Schengen Agreement, which enables US citizens to enter the country without a visa and stay for no more than 90 days. For citizens of other countries, the consultation of the specialist is needed.

TWENTY-TWO YEARS OF

5-Star Reviews!

5 star review

From the moment of initial contact with Captain Yiannis, everything was seamless.

Our experience has been nothing short of exceptional.

From the moment of initial contact with Captain Yiannis, everything was seamless. This company and the entire team could not have been more helpful! We live in the USA and never had a problem with communication. The Catamaran we selected was the Lagoon 450F. It was beautiful, spacious, clean, and easy to live on for a week as we sailed to beautiful beaches.

The Ionian Islands we visited were breathtaking, especially Kefalonia – it was our favorite! Above all, the feeling of safety that Captain George ensured throughout our trip made our journey even more memorable. We can’t wait to experience it again.

So, if you’re looking for an unforgettable sailing experience around the Greek Islands with a professional company and a knowledgeable and friendly guide, look no further!

Great knowledge of the area and its history.

Excellent week of sailing in the Greek Islands with Yiannis. He has great knowledge of the area and its history. He showed us unique beaches and key sites on the islands. A memorable week of adventure, drama, and weather. A great first visit to the country of Greece and its islands. Recommend Yiannis as a skipper and guide for your trip.

David and Suzanne Kelly September 25, 2021

The kids enjoyed jumping off the boat and even steering.

We made it back safely and happily to Paros today. Yianni showed us secluded beaches, surprising chortas and agreed to take us to santorini even though he hates sailing there! The kids enjoyed jumping off the boat and even steering it on occasion. It’s a beautiful part of the world and we’d definitely recommend exploring it.

Christine August 22, 2021

Yannis is a superb captain

First and foremost, Yannis is a superb captain. He is a true professional and puts the comfort and safety of the guests first. We had a superb week and thanks to the knowledge of Yannis we visited hidden beaches and places that were sublime. Yannis is passionate about sailing, and we all improved our sailing skills and learned about sailing this magical part of the world.

We cannot wait to return and know that Captain Yannis is our go-to Greek master of the seas.”

Kim Cornwall and friends October 14, 2021

The best tavernas for dining and the most interesting places to visit.

My friends and I had a terrific sailing trip with Cpt. Yiannis. We sailed islands from Athens to Milos for a week. [...] Captain Yiannis was not only an outstanding skipper, but he also is a very knowledgeable tour guide. [...] Also, he had tremendous knowledge of any island we stopped on the way and recommended the best tavernas for dining and the most interesting places to visit.

The captain was very professional and sailed extremely safe and responsible. Great guy, a great captain, thank you, Captain Yiannis!

Remis – Boston, USA June 26, 2021

Yannis gave us the ideal family yacht

We had a wonderful week of sailing in the Saronic Gulf end of August. Yannis gave us the ideal family yacht for this bareboat charter trip . Together with the charter company we felt us in very good hands, for all questions we had. Except in this year 2020, with these special conditions!

Thanks Yiannis.

Cruises in Greece on luxurious crewed yachts

yacht sailing greece reviews

A group of fine, fun loving Canadians set sail from Lefkas aboard this immaculate boat - The Velos. Over the course of the week we lived like Greek tycoons thanks to our incredible hosts. We learned to love the Greek cuisine (thank you Alicia), the sport of sailing (thank you Thanos), and the charm of a well travelled, mature young lady (that’s you, Darina!).

We loved the ice cream of Kastos, the music in Fiscardo and the bay on Meganisi. We tore it up on the Velos dance floor too!!!

Efharisto - best vacation ever. YAMAS!!! x x x Love, Bill, Tracy, Kathryn, Robert, Dave & Yvonne (Peterborough, Canada)

Thank you for a wonderful 30th anniversary vacation. It was our first trip to Greece and could not have been a better introduction to your beautiful country and culture. We felt like part of the Velos family while we were on board. We hope to come back again and continue to explore with you.

See you soon! Skip and Tammy (USA)

Thank you Thanos and Alicja!

What an awesome team with Darina and the cute little Nicolas!! What a great week on your beautiful yacht in a magnificent part of the world. Your cooking was the highlight – can’t believe what you can whip up in that little kitchen and give us a feel for Greek food.

How you bring together people from all parts of the world and make us feel so welcome and sharing your local knowledge is a real credit and success. There were so many highlights on the trip, the islands, the swimming, the sailing, the food and the happy hour. We enjoyed every moment on the holiday!

Thank you!! Kathy and Tania (Australia & Finland)

Dear Thanos, Alicia and Nicolas,

You have made me fall in love with Greece. I was here 3 years ago and was not enamored with our trip. If I were to look up hospitality in the dictionary, it would have your names listed there!

Thanos, you gave us each an opportunity to enjoy what we most love about the sea. Alicia, your meals are amazing. So impressed! Nicolas, you shared your smiles and coos and gave 4 grandmas an experience of a lifetime.

Thank you all! Marsha and Tom S. (Columbia and New Orleans, USA)

Sailing the Cyclades: Yacht Getaways Greece Explorer

I’ve been fortunate enough to visit Greece a couple of times already over the last few years, spending time in Athens and on honeymooners’ paradise Santorini . However, it wasn’t until my week sailing the Yacht Getaways Greece Explorer route through the Cyclades that I truly fell in love with the country.

If you’ve landed on my blog because you’re looking for a Yacht Getaways Greece Explorer review (and you don’t want to read the many itinerary spoilers in the copy below), I can tell you right now that within the first five minutes of arriving on board you’ll realise that you bagged the best yacht charter in Greece. Go ahead and book for next season, it’s not a decision you’re going to regret .

ONE WEEK SAILING THE CYCLADES

Defined by rugged landscapes, ancient archaeological sites, and a healthy peppering of traditional blue-and-white stucco towns that sit atop cliffs aside the Aegean Sea, the islands of the Cyclades are some of the most beautiful in the Greek archipelago . (Something the Instagram-addict inside me was particularly thrilled about when I received my information pack from the Yacht Getaways team.)

DAY ONE PAROS TO ANTIPAROS

Mykonos, Ios, Santorini, there are a number of famous faces amongst the week’s itinerary, and after flying direct into Santorini from London and hopping aboard a Hellenic Seaways ferry to Paros, my week began with a sunset sail to the neighbouring island of Antiparos .

Sailing south from Paros, the late-afternoon breeze propelled us toward the port of Antiparos where we were to moor in the bay for our first night on the water. Host Jo and Skipper Colin used the time to familiarise us with the boat and talk us through the planned route for the week.

There were a couple of potential changes to the itinerary due to heavy winds that were forecast for later in the week, but they were confident that we’d still get to see the majority of the islands, so on we sailed.

A MINI GUIDE TO ANTIPAROS

Often overlooked in favour of its headline-hitting neighbours, Antiparos isn’t known for its nightlife, high-end shops, and island tours. Instead, this central Cycladic hideaway boasts endless white-washed towns, quaint fishing ports, and secluded swimming spots .

On Antiparos, old men sit beneath ancient oak trees playing backgammon while the hippies who found themselves here in the 1970s still run nudist campgrounds. This isn’t an island full of party-going twenty-somethings, although like all traditional Greek communities the Ouzo flows freely every night .

RECOMMENDATION

Restaurant: Kalokeri – fresh, seasonal ingredients are served up in a modern Greek style. Bookings are essential.

DAY TWO ANTIPAROS TO IOS

There’s something magical about waking up on a yacht that’s moored in a quiet bay. First you hear the water gently lapping at the hull, and then as you open the hatch-window that sits above your bed, sunlight and a crisp ocean breeze wake you from your slumbered state .

I’m pretty sure I could easily become a morning person if this was the way the world greeted me every time I woke up.

Leaving Antiparos behind we set sail for neighbouring Ios, an island I was excited to explore as I’d heard there were a number of churches atop a hill offering particularly picturesque views of the harbour .

ONE NIGHT ON IOS

Before my trip I’d seen pictures of Ios on Pinterest. A typically Greek scene the main town (Ios Chora) sits high on a hillside; its cobbled streets a labyrinth of white-edged stones .

Arriving into the port (a short bus ride from the village), we moored up on the key heading, threw some beach-wear in a daypack, and set out to scale the distant peak where a blue-domed church and three other ecclesiastic forms stood proud in the afternoon sun . I knew I’d find a photo-worthy scene at the top so it was first on my list of sights to see.

The Church of Panagia Gremiotissa (the Saint protector of the island) can be seen from almost everywhere in the town of Ios and is easily found by navigating its narrow lanes that ascend the hillside. From the top, views of island and ocean dominate the scene . I was surprised to find we had the site to ourselves and so made the most of the opportunity capturing the perfect Instagram to share the moment with the folks following my trip.

Sundowners: The Octopus Tree – while their tapas style menu is a little on the expensive side (for the portion size offered), I’d highly recommend this port-side spot for a sundowner. Sit, relax, and watch as fishermen haul their catch of the day onto the dock .

DAY THREE IOS TO SKHINOÚSSA, LITTLE CYCLADES

Dropping anchor in a Alimnia Bay on the coast of Iraklia we hit pause on our morning sail out of Ios in favour of a swim stop and a light lunch. For it was here, as Skipper Colin informed us, that the skeleton wreck of a German WWII Arado 196 Seaplane lay at a depth of about 15 metres – see pictures .

Snorkels on we splashed about in the relative shallows for an hour or so, exploring the wreck and SUPing along the shore, before refuelling on fresh pasta and continuing our journey towards the islands of the Lesser Cyclades.

After sailing for the best part of the day and mooring in the small port of Mersíni, we sat on the deck and drank gin and tonics as the late-afternoon light danced across the shore. Then, after a reasonably aerobic  walk up the hill to the charming town of Hóra, I found myself sitting with a cucumber martini in hand, watching the sunset from a balconied restaurant in the hillside .

Yacht Getaways Greece Explorer review

THREE THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT SCHINOÚSSA

Relatively untouched by Greece’s insatiable summer tourism trade, Schinoússa sits a little over five kilometres from the southern shores of Naxos and boasts deserted beaches, patchworked landscapes, and quaint fishing towns .

From Hóra you can reach no fewer than sixteen beaches dotted around the island, accessible by a network of dirt tracks.

On a clear day you can see the nearby islands of Santorini and Ios , head to Alygaria Kampos beach for the best chance of a sighting.

Restaurant – Deli – a charming restaurant and cocktail bar, Deli boasts a modern interior and rural vistas from its balconied position overlooking the ocean. Cocktails are expensive, but well worth the splurge .

Yacht Getaways Greece Explorer review

DAY FOUR SCHINOÚSSA TO MYKONOS

The Meltemi Winds sweep across the Greek islands during the late summer and it was on the fourth day of my trip that they made their presence known. Waking up to the sound of the yacht’s engines motoring, I arrived on deck in my PJs to find Skipper Colin at the helm and a palette of ochre tones lighting up the sky.

Still within the relative shelter of the Lesser Cyclades we stopped for breakfast in a deserted bay on the south coast of Naxos and made the most of the opportunity to swim in the clear, clam waters . Our planned route would take us north along the leeward side of Naxos and out into the Aegean Sea where we’d have little protection from the force of the Meltemi, which had picked up and were causing an increasing swell.

Yacht Getaways Greece Explorer review

It’s at this point that I’ll suggest that for anyone who has never sailed on open water, or suffers from motion sickness, a packet of seasickness tablets are a worthwhile purchase regardless of where and when you’re sailing . Mother Nature can be unpredictable and if you’ve got a competent skipper (and an adventurous crew), one tablet could make the difference between an exciting few hours on the water, and a stomach-churning experience you’d rather forget.

Dosed-up and psyched-up we left the comfort of Naxos’ shores and set out on the crossing to Mykonos.  The waves peaked and troughed and my crew-mates snoozed in the galley. I could imagine that, when the water is calm, this part of the route would be a great time to relax on the bow, read a book, and soak up some rays. Fear not, the Meltemi doesn’t stick around all season so you may be lucky and find yourself enjoying the later during your trip .

As we approached Mykonos’ southern coast there was visible relief on everyone’s face. However the previous four hours had not dampened the sense of excitement at the prospect of exploring another new destination.

THE SHIP TO SHORE GUIDE TO MYKONOS

Renowned for its rolling hills, historic windmills, and white-sand beaches, Mykonos has long been a destination for those seeking a vibrant island escape . In the summer months its night-owl culture attracts the international jet-setting crowd, many of whom are beginning to choose Mykonos in favour of other idyllic party islands like Ibiza.

From the New Port, where your yacht will moor on arrival, you have the option of taking a bus (which runs every half an hour until 1am), or water taxi to the Old Port which acts as a gateway to the main town. Here you’ll find water-front restaurants, chic boutiques, and stylish cocktail bars with alfresco street-side seating.

Possibly the island’s most iconic feature however, is the row of windmills that stand overlooking Alefkandra harbour . White-washed and without sails, they stand silently, no longer used to mill wheat their existence now just a reminder of the island’s past.

A post shared by Priesh (@priesh_sp) on Sep 21, 2017 at 11:54am PDT

RECOMMENDATIONS

The windmills are a popular point of interest so if you’re keen to capture a tourist-free photo catch the bus into town for an early morning amble prior to departing the port. Or, if you’re planning to party all night head there for sunrise before you head back to the boat for a snooze.

Restaurant:  Eva’s Garden – tucked away in the back streets of the Mykonos town I stumbled upon this restaurant by pure chance. Simple, classic dishes packed with flavour are served in an alfresco style-indoor garden room hidden away behind the entrance to the restaurant. Try a portion of Mama’s Soutzoukakia, they’re divine.

DAY FIVE MYKONOS TO NAOUSSA, PAROS

With the Meltemi Winds losing power over night, the following afternoon we set sail south towards the island of Paros and the idyllic port town of Naoussa. Thanks to the hefty tail wind and calmer waters I was able to lay out on the deck and catch some Zzzzzs in the ocean air. Mooring in the bay off the coast of Naoussa Skipper Colin taxied us across to the shore where we picked up a cab into town and ate at the effortlessly elegant Barbarossa restaurant on the harbour-front .

With the sun already setting it wasn’t until we returned to the town the following morning that I was able to appreciate its beauty. Hugging the cobbled docks of a small fishing port the alfresco dining rooms of restaurants, bars, and cafes spill out to the water’s edge , creating an almost celebratory atmosphere as people drink and dine throughout the day and night.

Unassuming in its appearance, unlike other places I’ve seen over the last few days, Naoussa doesn’t appear to be trying to create an affluent, sophisticated vibe, it just is.

Restaurant : Barbarossa – This water-front restaurant wraps itself around the northern edge of the harbour and encompasses a picturesque church outside which its dining table sit on cobbled stones. Serving fresh seafood and delicious local wines, the prices aren’t the most practical for budget travellers but the memory of the fresh, island flavours are well worth the price.

A post shared by Charli • Wanderlusters ✈️ (@wanderlustersuk) on Sep 19, 2017 at 9:45am PDT

DAY SIX – STRANDED IN NAOUSSA

I say ‘stranded’ because the tempestuous Meltemi Winds had returned and our Skipper Colin made the intelligent call to remain moored in the bay after seeing a mega yacht struggle to take on the swell that had whipped up the water over night.

However, finding myself back in Naoussa I didn’t feel like I was being cheated out of exploring Naxos (which was our next planned stop), more like the opportunity was a treat from the Gods who had seen how the town had stolen my heart .

Our Host, Jo, knowing us reasonably well by this point during the week, suggested that we take a walk to a nearby winery where regional and local wines were served up on a tasting menu that included fresh cheeses, meats, and bread . This, along with a leisurely amble through the narrow streets of the town is a must-see sight if you ever find yourself in Naoussa with time to spare.

yacht sailing greece reviews

A sweet treat: Nonna Crema – for delicious homemade ice creams in traditional and off-the-wall flavours try Nonnas, you wont be disappointed (only open from 6pm).

DAY SEVEN NAOUSSA TO PAROS PORT

Yacht Getaways Greece Explorer review

Arriving back into the port of Paros after a leisurely sail around from Naoussa I felt my heart sink as Skipper Colin tied on to the concrete dock from which we started our adventure. Despite the challenging Meltemi Winds my week aboard was just as delightful as that of my previous Yacht Getaways trip in Croatia last summer .

Incredible landscapes, fantastic food, and great fun with a fabulous mix of people, my week was defined by the skill, hospitality, and humour of Skipper Colin and his First Mate and Host Jo. Without their expert navigation of the islands, picking out the best mooring spots, and sharing recommendations for each new place we visited, my experience wouldn’t have been half as memorable.

From Paros, to Antiparos, Ios, Schinoússa, Mykonos, and back, my time aboard the Greece Explorer has become the most favoured of all my Greek adventures .

HELPFUL ADVICE FOR THE YACHT GETAWAYS GREECE EXPLORER ROUTE

TRAVEL TO PAROS

If you’re on a budget, consider searching for flights to and from nearby airports such as Athens, Santorini and Mykonos, and then check ferry fares to Paros. Inter-island flights can be costly considering the short time you’re in the air.

Remember to factor in the cost of any taxis you may have to take in order to get between airports and ferry terminals. I flew into Santorini airport and picked up a ferry from the island’s port in order to reach Paros. The 12 minute taxi ride cost me €30 one-way.

Similarly, if to you convenience is king, search for fares with connecting flights into Paros airport.

5 PACKING ESSENTIALS

Microfiber towel

Waterproof camera

European adapter for electricals (you can charge electronic when the boat is connected to shore power, and when the engine is on when under way)

Yacht Charters in Greece with Istion

Greece is quite simply the perfect sailing destination in Europe. Blessed with a mild southern Mediterranean climate with an extended summer giving a comfortable sailing season of close to eight months, our small country has over 13,000 kilometres of coastline to explore . That impressive number comes from the over 6000 islands and islets scattered like diamonds in the sea, each of them inviting you to swim for hours, socialise while tasting Greece’s well know cuisine and enjoy the beauty of a Greek summer spent next to the waves. Greece is truly a sailor’s paradise .

At Istion Yachting, we have been providing unforgettable sailing holidays in Greece for more than 30 years. From our humble beginnings on the island of Kos in 1992 we now offer charters throughout Greece from our 11 main charter bases. Our experienced skippers and crews, charter base staff, planning departments and every one of the wider Istion team is an expert in their field and is ready to assist you in planning the perfect sailing holiday in Greece . We look forwarded to welcoming you this summer!

There are so many options, and only so much time. The diversity of the different sailing areas in Greece makes picking just one difficult, which is why so many of our guests come back to sail again and again . There is always another beautiful island to visit and another idyllic beach to swim on!

Peak sailing season is from late June through August with hot weather, warm seas and busy islands. Availability can become limited during this period so booking early is essential.

Late spring from May to June and late summer from September to early October are often considered the best time to sail for experienced sailors and repeat visitors to our country. The weather is great and the islands are more relaxed than the busy summer months.

For those who want to live the real Greek way of life, April and October can be rewarding, with less heat, fewer visitors and enticing low-season offers . A few of the restaurants and shops on some islands may not have opened or may have closed for the season, but in our opinion early and late season sailing in Greece is a magical and unique experience .

The Argo Saronic Gulf is actually two gulfs (the Saronic and Argolic ) that are often referred to together in sailing terms given their close distances to each other. The Saronic Gulf lies in between Athens and the coast of the Argolid Peninsula while the Argolic Gulf is one hop over in between the peninsula and the first large leg of the Eastern Peloponnese , which runs all the way south to Monemvasia.

We often recommend this area to first time sailors for a number of practical reasons. First and foremost, it is the easiest area to reach from Athens , which makes it an ideal spot for those arriving via the Athens International Airport. Within a few hours of touching down you can be swimming and relaxing on board having reached your first destination.

Another advantage is that the area is well protected from the annual Meltemi winds that can blow strongly in July and August and may create challenging conditions for less experienced sailors.

The Argo Saronic Gulf also has plenty of places to visit on either a one or two-week holiday. One-week holidays will usually take in the nearby islands of Aigina and Poros before looping down to the coastal town of Ermioni and the cosmopolitan islands of Spetses and Hydra further south. A visit to Epidavros for a quick trip to its famous ancient theatre is not to be missed for the history buffs.

Two week holidays allow you to explore further east, with the coastal towns of Nafpleio, Leonidio and Kyparissi offering relaxed mooring while cruising the coast of the Eastern Peloponnese.

We invite you to learn more about our Athens charter base , download our sample one-week Saronic Gulf sailing itinerary for inspiration and contact us with any questions, we are here to help you plan your perfect sailing holiday.

Ah, the Cyclades. A name steeped in history that brings the classic image of a Greek island to everyone’s mind. While Greece has many island chains and all of them are unique and magical, the Cyclades has become nearly synonymous with the county as a whole for many visitors.

Characterised by their white houses, rugged landscapes and world famous beaches , the Cyclades attract visitors from around the world and are a must see for everyone at some point in their life. For sailors the area offers a huge variety of routes and islands to visit, from the world famous islands Mykonos and Santorini to the popular Paros and Naxos and many, many more in between.

A note about the Meltemi winds that blow from the north in July and August. In the Cyclades these winds can make for challenging conditions and sailing the area during these times is best for experienced sailors. Don’t despair all you beginner sailors! If you want a helping hand our skippers are the best in Greece and will be happy to take care of the sailing and navigation so you can enjoy the islands worry free.

The Cyclades are reached from our main base in Alimos Marina on the western side of Attica giving quick access to the islands of Kea, Kithnos, Serifos, Sifnos and Milos among others.

Our base in Lavrion is perfect for getting a head start to the islands of Andros, Tinos, Mykonos, Paros and Naxos . The Lavrion base is further south and on the east side of Attica, saving a couple of hours of additional sailing time on your way out. As an added bonus, Lavrion is just half an hour from the Athens International Airport so you can be on your way towards your destination just an hour or two after landing.

Located on the western side of Greece the seven main islands of the Ionian Sea have their own unique charm and character . The Ionian Islands are much greener than most islands in Greece, their location and geography bringing more rainfall during the winter months and allowing trees and shrubs to grow and thrive. The combining of colours between the green of the hills , the white of the sands and the blue of the sea are a special treat for visitors to this area.

Istion maintains three bases in the Ionian, on Corfu in the north and in Lefkas (or Lefkada) and nearby Preveza further south.

Itineraries starting from Corfu may include multiple stops along the Corfu coast, visits to the islands of Paxos and Antipaxos and visits to mainland ports including Parga and Syvota .

Trips starting from Lefkas or Preveza may head either north towards Corfu or South towards the islands of Kalamos and Kastos and then on to the mythical island of Ithaca and nearby Kefalonia . Note that our base in Preveza is just 10 minutes from the Aktion Airport where all charter flights to Lefkas arrive. If your flight times are tight, Preveza is a great option .

We recommend downloading our sample sailing itineraries for trips leaving from Corfu and from Lefkas or Preveza . If you need more recommendations for a truly unique voyage through to the Ionian just contact us , we will be happy to help.

The Dodecanese islands in the southeast Aegean are close to our heart. The central island of Kos is where Istion Yachting first started operations in 1992 .

The Dodecanese are known for their wonderful beaches and rich history ranging from the ancient to the medieval to the modern in a delightful kaleidoscope of sights and sounds . The area has relatively mild wind conditions that are perfect for sailing throughout the year and has plenty of sun and warmth during the summer months.

Istion now has two bases in the Dodecanese, our home base on Kos and another on the historic island of Rhodes . From Kos you may head north towards the islands of Kalimos, Leros and Patmos and if time permits all the way to amazing Ithaki and Fourni .

Heading south from Kos will put you on course to visit the islands north of Rhodes including Nisiros, Tilos and Symi . Setting sail from Rhodes itself also reaches these islands or you can choose to head west, exploring the coast of Rhodes and visiting the quaint island of Chalki and the beautiful islands of Karpathos and Kasos .

Charter flights from most European countries fly direct to both Kos and Rhodes making them a great starting point for your next Aegean adventure !

The Sporades are the hidden gem on the Greek sailing map . Nestled off the eastern coast of central Greece the main islands of Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonissos and Skyros are a beautiful combination of green mountains, sandy and pebble beaches and deep blue seas. Nature plays a staring role here, with the National Marine Park at Alonissos being a significant refuge for the Monachus Monachus or Mediterranean seal .

Sailing conditions in the Sporades are relatively mild, although winds can shift between the day and night requiring some care when mooring. Distances between islands are short allowing a lot of fun to be packed into a week long charter .

We have two charter bases servicing the Sporades, a base on the island of Skiathos where most European charter flights arrive and another on the mainland city of Volos . Volos is a convenient starting spot for guests arriving by road with their own vehicle and allows exploring of the lovely coastline of the Pagasetic Gulf and Pelion on your way out to the islands – highly recommended !

Bareboat Charters

Tailored for the seasoned sailor, bareboat charters hand the helm over to you, allowing complete freedom to navigate the Greek seas at your own pace . Your sailing party must have at least one licensed skipper and one experienced crew member at a minimum to be able to rent our yachts as bareboats.

If you have some sailing experience but do not hold a valid license then a bareboat charter is not (yet) for you and your best option is a skippered charter where our friendly captains will give you a helping hand. If you are an experienced sailor and have no concerns about the challenges of wind conditions, navigation and docking then we invite you to read more about our bareboat charters here and contact us with any questions you may have.

Skippered Charters

Our skippered charters are the perfect blend of guidance and freedom, designed for those who have some sailing experience, are eager to learn or just want to relax and let a professional do the hard work . With an Istion skipper at your side, you can enjoy the peace of mind that comes with their expert navigation and docking skills while still playing an active role in your sailing adventure.

It's an educational and exhilarating experience where you can hone your sailing skills, participate in manoeuvring the yacht, and even take the helm under the watchful eye of your skipper. It is an amazing experience for everyone and kids in particular have a great time learning about sailing and playing little captain for a week.

Our skippered charters always start off with a briefing between you and your skipper so you can learn about the area you are going to sail and the islands you may want to visit. Our skippers know the Greek seas inside out and based on your preferences they will suggest recommended itineraries to follow, which islands to visit and what hidden beaches to swim at.

If you are planning your first sailing holiday in Greece , you are in the very best hands with Istion's professional skippers by your side. Read more about our skippered charters here , or just get in touch to start planning your perfect sailing holiday in Greece.

Fully Crewed Charters

For those of you that want to indulge in the epitome of maritime luxury, our crewed charters promise a carefree and opulent experience in Greece. This option is perfect for those who wish to sit back, relax, and soak in the Mediterranean sun while every detail is taken care of by our professional crew. From expert navigation to gourmet meals, and from personalized itineraries to attentive service, every aspect of your voyage is meticulously curated to ensure unparalleled comfort and elegance .

Crewed charters are available on a range of our top end sailing yachts and catamarans , and for those that want the thrum of an engine beneath their feet and to make a grand entrance wherever they go our exclusive motor yachts are waiting for you to step aboard. A crewed charter with Istion isn't just a holiday; it's an all-inclusive experience where you are the honoured guest and the Greek Isles your exclusive playground . Discover more about our fully crewed dream vacations here .

Sailing Yachts

Sailing yachts are perfect for those who love the classic feeling of sailing. Designed to be easy to handle, they smoothly glide through the water and let you enjoy the natural beauty of the Greek seas. They're a bit slower than other boats, and they lean to one side when the wind blows, which is all part of the classic sailing adventure. Their charming appearance and comfortable ride make them ideal for those who want to experience traditional sailing in a relaxed and eco-friendly way.

Sailing yachts are also the most budget friendly option for a sailing holiday in Greece. Our smaller yachts with three cabins and space for up to six guests (or eight if two sleep in the main cabin) can be rented for as little as roughly 1200 Euros a week in the low season. Costs for larger yachts with up to 6 cabins and space for up to 12 guests rise to approximately 10.000 Euros a week in the high season.

At Istion, we proudly offer a wide selection of the latest models as well as impeccably maintained older sailing yachts from Jeanneau, Beneteau, Bavaria, Sun Odyssey, Hanse and other top shipyards. Whether you're planning a cozy trip for a small group or a grand sailing adventure for a larger party, we have the right yacht to suit your needs.

Catamarans are the choice for those who want lots of space and a stable, comfortable trip. With their two-hull design, they don't rock as much as sailing yachts, which is great if you're new to sailing or easily feel seasick. You can also get closer to the beach with a catamaran, as they don't sit very deep in the water. Catamarans offer a smooth and spacious experience, making for a relaxing and comfortable sailing holiday and are a very popular choice for first time sailors in Greece.

For families and larger groups, the bigger cabins and more room to move around on a catamaran make them a good fit for your holiday. The double hull layout means two families can easily sail together while each having their own 'private space' on either side of the main deck. Catamarans also tend to have one washroom per cabin, a feature all parents with teenage kids appreciate.

The comfort and space offered in a catamaran puts them in a higher budget bracket than our monohull sailing yachts. Our smallest catamarans with four cabins and room for up to 10 guests start at roughly 2100 Euros per week in low season. Our top of the line models can range up to 16.000 Euros plus in the middle of the high season.

We are proud to have one of the largest fleets of catamarans in Greece with brand new models from Lagoon, Bali and Fountaine Pajot among others. We invite you to browse all our catamarans and contact us for any guidance you need to help make your sailing adventure in Greece perfect in every way.

Motor Yachts

Motor yachts are all about luxury and speed. They have multiple levels with lots of space, including big bedrooms and expansive living areas. These boats move quickly, powered by strong engines, so they're great if you want to explore a lot of places fast and make an impressive entrance wherever you go.

Our motor yachts are all modern, with plush interiors and all the latest features for entertainment and entertaining. However, they do use more fuel and require a professional captain and crew, so there's a higher cost for this kind of luxury and speed. If you're looking for a high-end and fast-paced trip with all the modern comforts, motor yachts are the way to go .

The one and only

Odyssey Sailing is a company I know since 2014 as I chartered by them for the first time. This company do charter their own (I would call it “Family-owned”) lovely yachts in Sporades as well as they do organize charters from other locations in Greece. In the latter case they also do only work with yacht owners who cares much about their services and condition of their yachts. Company (Co-)Founder and a direct contact Francesca has organized charters for me last years from multiple locations and the only experience I had working with them was really excellent! Some years ago, I even recommended Odyssey Sailing to one friend of mine and he was also completely impressed by the value for the money he got. Want to go for sailing in Greece and have a best experience ever? Go for Odyssey Sailing!

Dear Serhiy, Thank you so much for your review! If I could give 5 stars to clients also, I would give you 5. Over the decade that you have been chartering yachts with us, you have been always appreciative of the yachts we and our partners offer, always looked after the boats well and it was a pleasure to meet you and your crew here in Volos, finally, on your 8th charter with us! We look forward to welcoming you again in future of course and will always give you our best boats and best discounts! Francesca

OdysseySailing: best of the best

My husband and I charter with Odyssey Sailing since almost a decade. Different yachts, in different beautiful places (in Greece), with different crews. But only one thing remains unchangeable through the years: extremely professional and friendly Odyssey Sailing team, great quality, excellent service, safety, full confidence to this amazing people and pure satisfaction with our sailing vacation at the end.

Date of experience : September 02, 2021

Thank you, Natalia, for your kind words! We really enjoyed meeting you at long last, face to face, when you came to Volos, and of course, we can't wait to meet you again soon in the future!

Amazing service. Amazing people…

It was the second time I was on sailing tour organized by Odyssey Sailing. Amazing service, amazing people. Completely satisfied!

Date of experience : August 31, 2021

Thank you for your feedback, Denis. We are pleased you enjoyed our boat "Celene" and your sailing trip in the Sporades islands. It was great to meet you in person and we hope to do so again next time!

Odyssey Sailing - Excellent - this is what other charter companies should aspire to.

I have just returned from a great bareboat charter holiday in the Sporiades organised through Francesca at Odyssey Sailing. I would definitely use this company again and have no doubts about recommending them wholeheartedly to anyone chartering in this area; or anywhere else that they cover. During the booking process, Francesca always answered promptly with reliable information and a thorough understanding of any technical or local issues. I felt in very safe hands for all aspects of the booking. Odyssey Sailing organised a Bavaria Cruiser 46 from Joanna and her team / family. I have been chartering in the med for many years now, including this model of Bavaria on several occasions. This yacht (s/y NOTUS) was in immaculate condition, especially taking into account that it is a 2007 yacht. Joanna gave the best briefing and handover I have had from any charterer. It was also well priced. A 5 star performance from Odyssey and from Joanna and the NOTUS team. To readers of this review. If you look at my other reviews on Trustpilot you will see that I have had some bad experiences with sailing charter companies. Odyssey Sailing provided me with an excellent service. This is what all those other companies should aspire to.

Date of experience : July 10, 2018

Thank you very much for your positive feedback. Of course, it works both ways. We also very much appreciate and respect clients who have a lot of experience with chartering, respect the boats they charter and of course look after them, are polite and clear in communications and relaxed and easy-going. So we also give you a 5 star review and hope it won't be long till we can be of service again. Best wishes, Francesca

For those who love relaxing sailing, enjoy the warm sea and sun, and explore archaeological and historical sites, why sail in greece and where are the best greek sailing itineraries.

SailCheckers regularly asked us why we love sailing in Greece so much and ask for more about the best Greek sailing itineraries .

The ancient history of the Greek civilisation bursts forth at every turn with ancient ruins and dramatic temples. Best greek sailing itineraries – all you need to know, we have created a mini greece sailing guide with all the information you need to know including the best greek sailing itineraries..

Wherever your start your sailing holiday in Greece, you will find superb sailing conditions in stunning surroundings, reliable winds, pristine seas, excellent food, a sunny Mediterranean climate and a welcome to match.

Our Top 5 Best Greek Sailing Itineraries

Our Highlights.  The beautiful and exotic Greek Islands lure droves of tourists every year for some of the best Greek sailing itineraries, making them one of the world’s top travel destinations. Amazing beaches, ancient ruins, excellent cuisine, colourful harbours, breathtaking views and even active volcanoes the Greek islands have it all.

Santorini.  Part of the Cyclades group, Santorini is the jewel. It is considered by many the most picturesque islands. Lying in the South Of Greece, is can be a little tricky to access, or, put more accurately, harder to get home if the wind starts to blow form the north.

Mykonos . Also part of the Cyclades, Mykonos features a modern, cosmopolitan society blended with traditional whitewashed houses and maze-like streets.

SailChecker Tip: Enjoy a meal in Little Venice.

Rhodes.  Located in the Aegean Sea near the coast of Turkey, Rhodes is the capital and largest island of the Dodecanese archipelago, popular for its great beaches and historical significance.

Corfu.  The northernmost of Greece’s Ionian Islands, Corfu was controlled by many foreign powers, notably the Venetians and British, which is reflected in its culture and the architecture on the island. Sporades also will offer you amazing experiences with their crystal clear waters and their natural beauty

Ionian Islands. Home to the legendary “Odysseus”, the Ionian Sea consists of 7 main islands (also known as the “Heptanese”), but during your sailing adventures, you’ll find many smaller islands to explore.

Greek sailing Itineraries. What is interesting about an Ionian sailing itinerary is the contrast between the places you’ll get to visit. From the cosmopolitan and proud representative of the Venetian culture and architecture Corfu town to the breathtaking combination of blue and green hues in Lakka bay to the traditional fishing villages, one thing is for certain. You’ll be going home with more than a handful of stories and experiences to share, which makes it one of our best Greek sailing itineraries.

Best Greek Sailing Itineraries - Ionian Islands

Places To Discover. The Ionian islands are some of our favourite islands to visit, which is why we have included them in our best Greek sailing itineraries list. Some of the best islands to visit are listed below.

  • Parga, Mainland
  • Sivota, Mainland
  • Meganisi Island
  • Kalamos Island

Islands. The Dodecanese islands consist of 15 larger islands and over 150 smaller islands, located in the Southeastern Aegean Sea. Within this collection of islands, only 26 are inhabited. The Dodecanese islands cover an area of 1,048 square miles, which makes it one of our best Greek sailing itineraries.

Greek Sailing Itineraries. The Dodecanese is one of our favourite best Greek sailing itineraries, and it’s easy to discover why these islands are often referred to as the ‘sunniest corner of Greece’, thanks to their crystal clear turquoise waters, sandy and stone beaches, stunning archaeological landmarks, and traditional settlements. There are also unique Byzantine and medieval monuments which cover a large number of the islands.

Best Greek Sailing Itineraries - Dodecanese Islands

Places To Discover. The Dodecanese islands are some of our favourite islands to visit, which is why we have included them in our best Greek sailing itineraries list. Some of the best islands to visit are listed below.

  • Symi Island
  • Nisiros Island
  • Leros Island

Saronic. The Saronic Gulf is formed by two of the most prominent peninsulas in the Aegean Sea. In between the areas of Attica and Argolis, the gulf offers a number of islands worth visiting and the steadily-blowing Meltemi winds, (especially during July and August, however, not forbiddingly strong as they can get in the Cyclades). The area is also home to a variety of wildlife, including friendly short-beaked common dolphins and fin whales. History and relaxation meld together in this land of the Greek gods.

Greek Sailing Itineraries. The Saronic Gulf is one of our best Greek sailing itineraries for intermediate sailors. Involving medium winds (Force 2-5) and hidden coves excellent for taking off an afternoon and enjoying the Greek way of life, we offer seven days of history and delightful beaches ready for exploration.

Best Greek Sailing Itineraries - Saronic Islands

Places To Discover. The Saronic islands are some of our favourite islands to visit, which is why we have included them in our best Greek sailing itineraries list. Some of the best islands to visit are listed below.

  • Spetses Island

Sporades. The Sporades consist of 24 islands in the Aegean Sea. 4 of these islands are completely free of human residents – you’ll only find gorgeous scenery and empty beaches. Much of the area is considered a national park, and guests are encouraged to explore the area while leaving things carefully preserved behind them. The largest and most populated island is Skopelos, which has several villages and an opportunity to experience island life.

Greek Sailing Itineraries. The archipelago is also home to several historic sites. Once the home of neolithic peoples to members of the Ottoman Empire, you’ll find sunken cities, ruins, and almost-forgotten monasteries ready to visit and discover. The Sporades offer a bit of adventure and a chance to rest from modern life. This is a slightly more challenging of our best Greek sailing itineraries for those with a few sailing trips already under their belt (Level 3).

Best Greek Sailing Itineraries - Sporades

Places To Discover. The Sporades islands are some of our favourite islands to visit, which is why we have included them in our best Greek sailing itineraries list. Some of the best islands to visit are listed below.

  • Nishida Adelfi
  • Kira Panagia

Mezedes . Most visitors are aware of Mezze well before they arrive on these shores. Yet it remains one of the most Greek of culinary traditions enjoyed by locals and visitors alike, a must try on one of our best Greek sailing itineraries.

Lunch Aboard. You can find plenty of “mezedes” around Greece, both fish and meat version. Best of all, prepare your own for the most typical of Greek lunches aboard.

Wine Tasting

Greek wine is much-maligned the world over, yet there’s so much more to Greek wine than adodgy retsina. If you do get the opportunity, you should visit at least one vineyard during your stay.

SailChecker Tip : The image is from a traditional winery in Samos, why not drop by where you will be made very welcome.

You can find traditional, family-held wineries all around the greek islands.

Which charter is right for you?

Whether you’re new to the sea, or a seasoned sailor, Poseidon Charters offers yacht charter and sailing tours for everyone. Read our handy guide on the difference of each of the charter types.

Yacht Charter

For the experienced sailor. A yacht charter or bareboat means you are renting a monuhull or catamaran, without professional crew and sailing it yourself. In most destinations, a sailing certificate is required to skipper a boat on your own itinerary.

Skippered Yacht Charter

For the novice sailor. Charter a yacht with a professional skipper who will sail the yacht and provide local knowledge. Choose a monohull or catamaran yacht then sit back and relax while the skipper provides stress free sailing.

Luxury Yacht Charter

For the discerning sailor or traveller. A private yacht charter of a luxury motor, catamaran or monohull yacht, with the highest standard of service. Depending on the size of yacht, the crew ranges from two to ten crew and includes a chef for a high-end yachting experience.

Cabin Charter

For the adventurous sailor. Cabin charters are sailing tours booked by the cabin on a shared yacht. There are professional crew onboard who are your guides, prepare the inclusive meals and sail the boat. Cabins on sailing tours are available on catamarans or monohull yachts dependent on destination.

The Aegean Adventure

For over 30 years we were lucky enough to be able to sail the wonderful Aegean Sea in Greece on our by the cabin tours around the Greek islands. We sailed with 1000's of guests from all over the world sharing our passion for Greece. Thank you to everyone who sailed with us over the last 30 years you have made Poseidon Charters what it is today. In 2022 we Poseidon Charters decided to stop offering our cabin charter in Greece and now focuses on offering yachts with crew. Greece is still our number one destination of course, so why not take a look at which option is best for your next sailing vacation.

What's New?

Greece yacht charter flotilla

We no longer run our flotilla on a regular basis, but when a group of five friends wanted to sail together they formed their own flotilla and we provided the yachts, captains and hostesses for them.

Poseidon Charters at the Eastern Mediterranean Crewed Charter Yacht Show

Poseidon Charters has just returned from Greece where we attended the Eastern Mediterranean Yacht Show - EMMYS on the island of Poros.
