The Burgess guide to Palma International Boat Show
Published 09 August 2023
Your guide to the Palma International Boat Show
Organised by the Business Innovation Institute of the Balearic Islands, the Palma International Boat Show draws the crowds for its location as much as the yachts. Palma de Mallorca is one of the most visited islands in Europe, prized for its delectable tapas, luxury lifestyle and blended culture. The boat show brings together boatbuilders, nautical equipment suppliers, toys and accessories manufacturers and a host of international brands from the yachting industry.
What is the Palma International Boat Show?
Widely considered to be the inaugural event of the Mediterranean nautical season, the Palma International Boat Show is a four-day event where motor yachts, sailing yachts, accessories suppliers and everything else in between gather. Over 600 mega yachts sized 24m+ from the international brokerage and charter market are on display in the Superyacht Village showcasing anything from the latest advancements in sail design to next-level marine electronics.
Where can I get tickets?
Tickets for the event can be bought online in advance at the official show website. Flexible in its arrangements, visitors can purchase day tickets or a four-day pass which offers a small discount. There is no minimum age for entry, but masks remain a requirement.
When is the Palma International Boat Show?
The 2023 Palma International Boat Show will take place between 27-30 April, from 10.00 until 20.00 each day. It’s held during the summertime and sailing regatta season, and there are often many siestas and celebrations that visitors can take part in that offer an authentic slice of Balearic life.
Where is the Palma International Boat Show?
Palma, the island of Majorca’s capital city, is a major seaport forming part of the Balearic Islands archipelago. It’s famed for La Seu, a vast cathedral built on a previous mosque, which was built atop an original Christian church. Decorating Palma’s seaside promenade with a litany of superyachts, the Palma International Boat Show takes place in Marina Moll Vell, one of three superyacht marinas in the area. It’s strategically placed at the edge of Palma Old Town, virtually opposite the cathedral, and has 80 berths up to 45m in length and a draught of 5m.
What else can I do near the Palma International Boat Show?
Yacht owners and visitors looking to enjoy Palma’s Balearic beats can drink in the many Gothic landmarks that hark back to the 13th century, as well as a plethora of blended architecture from the city’s Roman, Byzantine and Muslim periods. These include the Almudaina, a Moorish-style Arab fortress converted to a royal residence, and west of the city, hilltop Bellver Castle is a medieval fortress with a distinctive circular shape.
Visit Llotja de Palma
Situated on Carrier de la Llotja next to the waterfront and not far from the Plaça de la Drassana, the Llotja de Palma is a 15th-century guild building recognised by its twin octagonal towers and an angel over the door. The Gothic landmark appears half-castle, half-church, but was designed by architect Guillem Sagrera as the city's exchange at the height of Mallorca’s maritime history. It was later used for storage during the War of Independence and a fine art gallery. Today, it is a cultural centre, hosting temporary exhibitions.
Explore Catedral-Basílica de Santa María de Mallorca
The Cathedral of Santa Maria of Palma, more commonly referred to as La Seu, is a Gothic Roman Catholic cathedral. Built from golden sandstone it’s perched high on Palma's old city walls. The picturesque town of Santa Maria del Cami, known by the locals as just Santa Maria, sits in Majorca's central flat plain, in one of the island's most prominent wine growing regions. La Seu is the most emblematic building in Palma, and a popular meeting point.
Take time out in Plaça Major
As Palma’s main square (though rectangular in shape), the Plaça Major is a natural hub of socialising. The large, longitudinal square is built on the site of the San Felipe Nerí Convent and is surrounded by traditional yellow buildings with green shutters. It enjoys frequent outdoor craft markets, and its many shops and cafes make the ideal place to while away a few hours enjoying the local fare and quaffing chilled rose.

Palma International Boat Show 2024 promises a more sustainable edition
The Palma International Boat Show 2024 is about to celebrate its 40th anniversary in an edition that promises to be more sustainable and economically impactful than ever. From 25th to 28th April 2024, Palma’s Moll Vell will become the epicentre of nautical innovation, marking the start of the Mediterranean season.

This year’s participation reaches 295 exhibitors, 24 more than last year, which is 10% more and a record for the organisers. The number of boats at sea has also increased, 260 compared to last year’s 252, and overall visitors will have the opportunity to enjoy around 600 boats distributed both on land and at sea.
New at Palma International Boat Show 2024
The 2024 edition of the Palma International Boat Show will witness an important milestone: the implementation of sustainable measures that seek to consolidate the event as a benchmark in the nautical industry. Sustainability certification will be the focal point, with initiatives aimed at reducing the carbon footprint, managing waste efficiently and promoting sustainable practices among exhibitors, suppliers and visitors. This effort marks a significant step towards the goal of certifying the ISWP as a fully sustainable event.
Measuring economic impact will also be a first for this edition. In order to better understand the event’s contribution to the industry and the local community, conferences, industry days and a special celebration will be held to recognise the continued support of businesses.
In addition, on 26 April, activities have been programmed on the site to commemorate the 40th anniversary with the participation of visitors and exhibitors. From 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., fairgoers will be able to enjoy live music and performances by entertainment groups. From 8 p.m. onwards, exhibitors are expected to take centre stage at the celebration, which will culminate with a drone show visible from various parts of the city.
Detailed information on these new features and events can be found on the official 40th anniversary website.
The Balearic Superyacht Forum
A highlight of the Palma International Boat Show 2024 will be The Balearic Superyacht Forum. This is the first international superyacht forum in the Balearic Islands. Organised by the Balearic Marine Cluster and sponsored by the IDI, this event will bring together superyacht professionals, experts and enthusiasts on the 24th and 25th of April. Topics such as innovation, sustainability and opportunities in the sector will be discussed in a full programme available at thebalearicsuperyachtforum.com.
Throughout its 40 years, the Palma International Boat Show has played a vital role in the nautical sector of the Balearic Islands, being a key economic engine. Contributing to the internationalisation and growth of local companies, the show has attracted foreign firms and generated more than 600 million euros according to data from the Balearic Marine Cluster. The next edition promises to be a milestone in this successful trajectory.

Introducing the Palma Superyacht Village
Palma superyacht village will form an integral part of the rebranded palma international boat show….
Taking place from 28 April to 1 May 2022, Palma’s flagship nautical event returns this year under a new name and vision. Previously two shows running in close collaboration – Palma Boat Show and Palma Superyacht Show – the events have now rebranded as the Palma International Boat Show (PIBS), which will incorporate Palma Superyacht Village as the superyacht-focused element.
Aila Bell, commercial manager of Palma Superyacht Village, explains the new organisation; “The shows have worked well together in the past, but some people were confused by the concept of two separate shows. Last year, the decision was made to completely unify the event and, as such, Palma International Boat Show represents the entire event with Palma Superyacht Village as an integral part of it.”
As well as reflecting the united mission of both former events, the rebranded show will also focus on growth. “The superyacht element of the show has always engaged an international audience, but we feel that the under-24m boating sector is also very interesting for international clients,” adds Bell. “We hope that the whole event will now grow in importance on an international stage.”
While the organisers aim to project the show internationally, they are adamant not to lose the original essence of the event, which has historically been lauded for its laidback and low-key character and set it apart in the yachting events calendar. Bell believes that having different yachts on display and more international exhibitors will simply add more variety and interest to the event.
As the first major European yacht show of the year, Palma International Boat Show 2022 follows an immensely difficult period for events in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic and promises a welcomed return to normality. “Numbers will be back to the same pre-pandemic levels in the Superyacht Village, the stands in the exhibition area are almost fully booked and the yacht reservations are flooding in,” comments Bell. “My impression is that people are enthusiastic to get out there and meet clients face to face – it’s very positive.”
The show is set to host a strong line up of yachts on the brokerage and charter markets. Some of the largest sailing yachts already confirmed for the show include the 60m Germania Nova, 46m Ganesha, 44m Imagine, 40m Surama, 37m Norfolk Star, 35m Solleone, 40m Ocean Pure 2 and 35m Sojana. On the motoryacht side, the 33m Benita Blue and 33m Odyssey III will be dominating the docks.
The Superyacht Village will also be launching a new concept this year: a dedicated crew area with a focus on professional training, career development and relaxed networking. Hosted in partnership with ACREW, the crew training and networking hub will be located on the esplanade adjacent to Moll Vell. “We hope this new concept will further enhance the show's diversity and attraction among the visitors and yachting professionals alike,” adds Bell.
A well-established superyacht hub and year-round yachting destination, Palma de Mallorca is popular for its plentiful cruising options, as well as quality service and refit infrastructure. These elements, combined with the vibrant city centre, make the Palma International Boat Show a fitting setting to launch the industry into what looks set to be a busy summer season.

News Detail
Wednesday November 8, 2023
The palma international boat show will celebrate its 40th anniversary with an edition packed with activities.
The next edition of the Palma International Boat Show will be marked by the celebration of its 40th anniversary, a very special date that the organisers want to share and involve the exhibitor companies that have placed their trust in the event and made it grow. For this reason, various activities are planned, such as the revival of the Night of the Sea, focused on the 40th anniversary, a tribute to exhibitors, as well as actions to consolidate the show, such as conferences and sectoral seminars. The promotion of innovation and the digitalisation of nautical companies will also be present at this edition, which aims to increase social nautical activities during the week of the fair, which will take place from 25th to 28th April 2024 in Palma’s Moll Vell. Also, the show will include Palma Superyacht Village, section specially designed for acquiring or buying boats over 25 metres in length.
The fair is organised by the Instituto de Innovación Empresarial de las Illes Balears (IDI), an entity under the Ministry of Enterprise, Employment and Energy, and the Balearic Yacht Brokers Association (BYBA).
A photograph of Nico Martinez stars in the image of the 40th anniversary, which has as its slogan “40 years at full sail”. Martínez is one of the most internationally recognised nautical professionals, winner of awards such as Mirabaud Yacht Racing in 2022, or the Mariano Aguada Communication Award of the Terras Gaudas National Sailing Awards in 2020. He has also been the official photographer for the America’s Cup Challenger “Rioja Espanya” to San Diego 1995, “Bravo España” to New Zealand 2000, and “Desafío Español” València 2007, as well as in international regattas such as Barcelona World Race 2010, Record Barcelona – New York, Audi MedCup Circuit 2008-2011, or RC44 World Championship Tour.
The aim of the organisers is that this anniversary will serve to highlight the role of the fair as a pole of attraction for international companies and as a catalyst for the sector, one of the most important for the economy of the Balearic Islands. It should be noted that over the years, the boat show has been the gateway for many foreign firms to choose the Balearic Islands to establish themselves in Spain and has allowed the internationalisation of companies in the islands.
The IDI and BYBA, aware of the need to continue to expand the fair, has initiated a series of meetings to establish partnerships with various institutions that will increase the promotion of the fair nationally and internationally. In this way, this year the PIBS will be present at the main tourist and nautical fairs with a double objective, to make the destination known as an international nautical centre and to attract visitors to the fair.
On the other hand, this week has opened the application period for space for new companies that did not participate in last year’s edition. Those interested can apply to participate via the website www.palmainternationalboatshow.com.
In 2023, the fair had 271 participating companies and some 600 boats on display, more than 250 at sea, spread over an exhibition area of 81,000 square metres. It was also the setting for the presentation of new boat models and products on a global scale, as well as becoming the nerve centre of the sector for four days.

Elena of London is a replica of the racing schooner of the same name that took part in the 1928 King’s Cup trans-Atlantic race. Herreshoff with two masts – the largest of which stands 42 metres above the waterline – and over 1,800 square metres of sail. She has proven herself as a worthy regatta contender with several wins under her keel including at the Monaco Classic Week and Les Voiles de St Tropez.

Inside the £30m Bayesian superyacht
The superyacht that sank off the coast of Sicily had won multiple awards for its stylish interiors and design.
Mike Lynch , 59, and his teenage daughter, Hannah, are among the seven passengers and crew feared dead when his yacht, the Bayesian, sank off Porticello near the Sicilian city of Palermo.
Divers are searching the wreckage of the 184ft British-flagged vessel, which rests on the sea bed 160ft below the surface and 1,600ft from shore.
The Bayesian, previously called Salute, was built in 2008 by Perini Navi, an Italian shipyard, alongside yacht designer Ron Holland Design.
When launched, it had the tallest aluminium mast in the world, at 237ft , earning the accolade of best exterior styling at the World Superyacht Awards in 2009.
Inside, the sleek, minimalist furnishings were created by Remi Tessier. The French design house also designed the 240ft-long Nautilus, owned by Thierry Stern, the president of Patek Philippe, and the 177ft-long Parsifal III, made famous by the television show Below Deck Sailing Yacht.
The Bayesian, which accommodated 12 guests in its master, three double and two twin bedrooms, was furnished with a teak deck and beige sofas set against dark wood furnishings.
Thin brown pillars and miniature terracotta sculptures offered a Japanese influence, while a crescent canvas awning kept guests cool on the top deck.
The superyacht won best interior at the International Superyacht Society Awards in 2008, and was also voted one of the best sailing yachts over 45 metres at the 2009 World Superyacht Awards.
Its original owner was John Groenewoud, a Dutch real estate developer, who was said to have purchased Salute from Eric Albada Jelgersma for a reported €35 million (£30 million) when it was built.
Mr Groenewoud, he founder of Built to Build Real Estate, set out an asking price of $35 million (£27 million) and sold the yacht in 2014, according to Boat International.
The Bayesian is now owned by Revtom, a company that listed Angela Bacares, Mr Lynch’s wife, as its legal owner in April.
It was given the name because Bayesian was the subject of Mr Lynch’s PhD and the name of the statistical method that helped build his empire.
A former chief stewardess of the yacht has spoken of putting on themed occasions and games for the owner’s two daughters.
Monica Jensen, 48, worked on the 184ft superyacht from November 2018 to October 2020 and told The Telegraph: “I had a fantastic time.”
She said she was surprised to hear of the sinking because the boat had withstood the choppiest of seas, telling The Telegraph: “It seems a bit strange. We have been in bad weather with it, crossed the Atlantic. It’s been all over. These things definitely don’t happen very often.”
Ms Jensen said the crew would have been well drilled on the evacuation process, adding: “You can’t work on a boat without the right certificates, training, and you do drills monthly.”
The vessel, which was operated by Camper & Nicholsons, had twin 965hp MTU engines, giving it a range of 3,600 nautical miles at 13-15 knots.
RSB Rigging carried out rig service works on it in conjunction with Astilleros de Mallorca, a shipyard facility in Palma, in November 2016. The Bayesian returned in September 2020 for scheduled service works, with the mast removed and reinstalled.
Steve Branagh, the managing director of RSB Rigging, told The Telegraph: “At this time, our deepest sympathies go out to the friends and families of all those affected by this dreadful tragedy.”
