A British man died and six people were injured after a yacht ran aground on rocks off the coast of Italy, possibly as it tried to avoid crashing into another boat.
The 63-year-old owner of the 70ft boat - whose name has not been released - suffered a heart attack after the vessel crashed in waters near the Sardinian seaside resort of Porto Cervo on Sunday night, according to Italian media.
Authorities believe the "Amore" yacht had been sailing parallel to another boat when, for reasons that are unclear, it veered away suddenly and hit rocks near the island of Rocche, south of the Li Nibani islands.
The man was reportedly thrown into the water and rescued by a boat flying under the Maltese flag which was nearby.
With the assistance of the coastguard he was taken in by medical staff but they were unable to revive him.
The other six people who had been aboard the "Amore" were rescued by a third boat and transported to the Porto Cervo port.
Four were taken to the emergency room, two in serious condition, Italian media say.

Tributes have been paid to a millionaire businessman after his death in a yacht accident in Italy, including by “heartbroken” TV star friend Richard Hammond .
Dean Kronsbein, the founder of the Ultrafilter Medical mask company in Ross-on-Wye , was on board the 70ft yacht Amore with his wife and daughter when their boat crashed into rocks off the Sardinian coast on Sunday.
Mr Kronsbein, 61, was reportedly pulled from the water at Il Nibani, near Porto Cervo, but pronounced dead at the scene, while his wife Sabine, 59, and daughter, Sophia, 27, were seriously injured.
The businessman, who shared a passion for cars with the Grand Tour and former Top Gear star, pledged to give away hundreds of thousands of medical-standard masks at the height of the Covid crisis, including in his home town.

Mr Hammond, who attended a Bentley Drivers Club party at Mr Kronsbein’s Cubberley House home in Walford just last month alongside Prince Michael of Kent, told MailOnline: “I’m genuinely shocked at this heartbreaking news.
“He really was a larger-than-life character, and I know people say that a lot, but he really was, and the world needs more people like him.
“He was a kind-hearted, jovial person who wished for others to have a good time when they were around him. He was also a shrewd businessman. Who for goodness sake opens factories in Ross-on-Wye?
“I just can’t believe I won’t see him again in his colourful waistcoat and looking at his pocket watch – the last time I saw him was a couple of weeks ago at the party he hosted at Cubberley House,” added Mr Hammond, who said they shared “a love of cars”.
“I’m just heartbroken for his family, they are tremendous people and I just wish Sabine and Sophia a speedy recovery.”
A family spokesperson said he was a “much-loved and respected family man, friend and business colleague”.
In a statement, they added: “It is with great sadness we can confirm that Dean Kronsbein has been killed in a boating accident.
“It is a tremendous shock and he will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know him.”
Ross-on-Wye town mayor Cllr Ed O’Driscoll posted: “I was deeply shocked to learn of the sudden death of local businessman Dean Kronsbein in a yachting accident off the coast of Sardinia.
“I would like to offer my deepest condolences to his family as they come to terms with this terrible news.”
A Bentley Drivers Club spokesperson posted on Tuesday: “The Bentley Drivers Club is deeply saddened to learn of the death of Dean Kronsbein in a boating accident. Our thoughts are with Dean’s family at this difficult time.”
One owner added: “Absolutely shocked and devastated. The world has lost one of its true characters.
“Flamboyant, eccentric, generous and kind. A friend to me and a friend to Bentley, I send love to his family, he will be missed by many I’m sure.”
Port of Olbia Coastguard commander Francesco Colarullo told MailOnline: “The damaged boat was towed back to Porto Cervo and has now been seized by the local prosecutor while the investigation into what happened exactly continues.
“It’s possible speed may have been an issue and we know that other vessels were in the area at the time and the accident may have happened while evasive action was taking place.” It was reported that the captain of the yacht had changed course to avoid another boat at the time of the accident.
A spokesperson for the Foreign Office said: “We are providing support following a maritime accident in Sardinia, including to the family of a dual national who has died. We are in contact with the local authorities.” It is understood that his son Dustin has flown out to Italy to support his mother and sister.
Mr Kronsbein, who had German and British dual nationality, moved to the area some five years ago, and lived at the former home of internationally-renowned singer and musician Roger Whittaker.
He founded Ultrafilter at Ross-on-Wye’s Alton business park last year, with Grand Tour and former Top Gear star Mr Hammond, who lives in nearby Weston-under-Penyard, attending the September launch.
Mr Kronsbein pledged to give away thousands of masks to those who needed them as part of his Great British Mask Giveaway campaign, including Ross-on-Wye and Grimsby where he grew up.
Staff at the business, which was shut this week, were devastated at the news of his passing.

The British millionaire owner of a firm supplying face masks to the NHS has died in a yacht accident in Italy.
Dean Kronsbein, 61, was fatally injured off Sardinia on Sunday, in an incident which reportedly left his wife and daughter seriously hurt.
Authorities said Mr Kronsbein suffered fatal injuries when the 70ft Amore yacht collided with rocks off Porto Cervo.
He was pulled from the water but pronounced dead at the scene despite the efforts of medics, according to local media.
A spokesperson for the family said Mr Kronsbein was a “much-loved family man.”
“It is with great sadness that we can confirm that Dean Kronsbein has been killed in a boating accident,” the spokesperson said.
“A much-loved and respected family man, friend and business colleague, it is a tremendous shock and he will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know him. We politely request that the family are allowed time and space to come to terms with their loss.”
The businessman was on board with his wife and daughter during the incident which occurred when the captain attempted to steer away from another boat but crashed into rocks forcing the business owner overboard, MailOnline reports.
Mr Kronsbein was the founder and chairman of Ultrafilter Medical - a multi-million pound company which manufactures face masks for NHS workers. In 2020 he bought a four-bedroom villa in Sardinia after renting regularly in the area.
Family lawyer Egidio Caredda told MailOnline : “As you can imagine this has been a terrible shock for the family.
“I was contacted by Mr Kronsbein's son to help them with the situation, and I am giving them all the assistance I can.
“The local authorities are still investigating the exact circumstances and we will also be speaking to witnesses to establish what happened.
“Mr Kronsbein's son Dustin flew out from England when he heard the news and he has been with his mother and sister. They are both very seriously hurt and are receiving significant medical treatment in hospital.”
Earlier this year, Mr Kronsbein led the Great British Mask Giveaway donating 100,000 to locals in Grimsby where he grew up.
At the time he said: “We didn’t have a lot and I started working on a local farm, picking potatoes during the school holidays, to earn extra money.
“In those days, we were allowed to take as many potatoes as we wanted to home for our families and I quickly spotted an opportunity to create a home-delivery service for local housewives, taking orders for different types of potatoes before delivering them to their door on a pedal bike I bought to get me to the farm and back.
“I’ve never forgotten how difficult those times were and, when I returned to the UK with my family in 2017, I wanted to give something back.”
A Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) spokesperson said: “We are providing support following a maritime accident in Sardinia, including to the family of a dual national who has died.
“We are in contact with the local authorities.”

British businessman killed in yacht accident in Italy is named
Dean Kronsbein, 61, who owned filters and face masks company Ultrafilter Medical, died after his boat smashed into rocks in Sardinia
A Briton who died in a yacht accident off the coast of Sardinia has been named as Dean Kronsbein, a millionaire businessman and classic car enthusiast who hosted celebrities at his country estate.
Mr Kronsbein, 61, died after his yacht Amore smashed into rocks off the exclusive Costa Smeralda or Emerald Coast in the north of Sardinia.
He survived the impact of the collision but died from a cardiac arrest on the way to hospital.
Mr Kronsbein’s wife Sabine, 59, and his daughter Sophia, 27, were seriously injured in the accident, which happened on Sunday night.
The captain of the 70ft-long yacht has been placed under investigation by prosecutors in Sardinia.
“He is under investigation but has not been arrested,” Egidio Caredda, a lawyer who is representing the Kronsbein family, told The Telegraph.
“Both the wife and daughter suffered very, very serious injuries. The daughter has undergone an operation in hospital. The wife also has serious trauma but is no longer in danger of losing her life.
“We are gathering testimony from witnesses. The autopsy on Mr Kronsbein will be carried out tomorrow.”
His son, Dustin, has flown out to Sardinia from the UK. Mr Kronsbein, who was of German origin, owned a company that makes filters and face masks called Ultrafilter Medical, based in Ross-on-Wye in Herefordshire.
He lived in a large 100-acre country estate called Cubberley House near Ross-on-Wye.
In June the estate hosted an event involving the Bentley Drivers Club, which was attended by HRH Prince Michael of Kent.
The event was also attended by Richard Hammond, the former Top Gear presenter, who was promoting his classic car restoration service, The Smallest Cog.
Last year Hammond, the star of The Grand Tour on Amazon Prime, turned up for the opening of a new factory built by Ultrafilter Medical. He developed a friendship with Mr Kronsbein based on their shared love of cars.
The accident happened at around 8.50pm on Sunday close to Li Nibani, a cluster of granite islands off the north east coast of Sardinia.
After the Amore rammed into rocks on a small island, survivors were picked up by a boat belonging to Silvio Berlusconi, Italy’s former prime minister. The Sweet Dragon happened to be in the area and was directed to the scene of the accident by the coast guard.
The three-times premier has a villa in Sardinia, where he has hosted the likes of Tony Blair as well as his notorious bunga bunga parties with starlets and models, but is not thought to have been on board.
The coast guard is investigating suggestions that the skipper of the Amore swerved dramatically to avoid an oncoming boat.
After ramming into rocks, the yacht partially sank. It has been recovered by the coast guard and towed to nearby Porto Cervo.
The boat has been impounded while Italian authorities carry out an investigation.
They will try to “ascertain whether the yacht’s speed and attempts to avoid other boats in the area could be among the causes of the accident,” the coast guard said in a statement.
Mr Kronsbein knew Sardinia well, having bought a four-bedroom villa on the island two years ago.
"We've rented here every summer and I thought it a good time to buy," he told the Financial Times.
He said he thought that property in Sardinia was a good bet because development is tightly controlled.
"The houses are built to blend into the hillsides and don't stick out and spoil the landscape."
In a statement, his family said: "It is with great sadness that we can confirm that Dean Kronsbein has been killed in a boating accident.
"A much-loved and respected family man, friend and business colleague, it is a tremendous shock and he will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know him.
"We politely request that the family are allowed time and space to come to terms with their loss."

A 'heartbroken' Richard Hammond has paid tribute to his millionaire friend who was killed when his yacht smashed into rocks off Sardinia on Sunday.
Dean Kronsbein, 61, was on the deck of his 70ft yacht Amore with his wife and daughter when the captain was forced to take evasive action to avoid another boat.
The vessel ploughed into a stretch of rocks and lost its bow in the force of the impact which happened at Il Nibani, just off the coast of Porto Cervo.
It is believed Mr Kronsbein was thrown into the water by the collision, before being pulled out by a passing Maltese flagged yacht. Despite attempts to save him, was declared dead onboard.
His wife Sabine, 59, and daughter Sophia, 27, were also seriously injured and taken to a hospital at Olbia before being transferred to a more specialist unit at Sassari, some 60 miles away. Mr Kronsbein's family said he would be 'deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know him.'
Today TV star Richard Hammond - who was a close friend of Mr Kronsbein - also paid poignant tribute to him. He told MailOnline: 'I'm genuinely shocked at this heartbreaking news.

'He really was a larger than life character and I know people often say that but he really was and the world needs more people like him.
'He was big hearted, fun character who wanted people to enjoy themselves when they were with him and he was also an astute businessman. He opened factories in Ross-on-Wye, who does that for goodness sake!?'
Mr Kronsbein was the owner of a firm called Ultrafilter Medical based in Ross-on-Wye which made highly specialised medical equipment and distributed millions of masks during lockdown.
His family also owns £5 million Cubberley House - a beautiful country home close to Ross on Wye - and also a four bedroom villa on the outskirts of Porto Cervo.
Dean Kronsbein, 61, was on the deck of his 70ft yacht Amore with his wife and daughter on Sunday when it ploughed into some rocks, throwing him into the ocean. He was pulled from the ocean, but could not be saved
'I just can’t believe I won’t see him again in his colourful waistcoat and looking at his pocket watch, the last time I saw him was a couple of weeks ago at the party he hosted at Cubberley House,' Mr Hammond, known for Top Gear, The Grand Tour and Brainiac, told MailOnline.
The party was hosted in the 100 acre grounds of his seven bedroom country home for the Bentley Drivers Club, and was also attended by Prince Michael of Kent. Mr Kronsbein owned a 1953 R Type continental Bentley and he and wife were committed fund raisers for charity.
'I’m just heartbroken for his family, they are tremendous people and I just wish Sabine and Sophia a speedy recovery. I’ve spoken to some people at the factory which is shut because of what’s happened and they are all devastated as well.
'He brought jobs and work to the area and locals were genuinely delighted for what he did for them and the town. I really shall miss him tremendously and the life of the party has left.
'Dean was on fine form at the party last month and gave a great speech as always and was the life and soul of the event. This is just such really, really sad news.
'We were drawn together by a love of cars and we would often meet up to talk about them and I would come along to factory openings.’
Mr Hammond also revealed how he had introduced Mr Kronsbein to BBC motoring journalist Zog Ziegler, and added: 'They love talking about cars, machinery and business and when I called him earlier to tell him what had happened he was as shocked as I was.
'He called me back a few minutes later to say he had just processed it all and couldn’t believe it. That’s the sort of person was he was a really big guy with a heart to match. I’m absolutely devastated, he was much loved and will be sadly missed.
In a statement to MailOnline, Mr Kronsbein's family confirmed his tragic death.
'It is with great sadness that we can confirm that Dean Kronsbein has been killed in a boating accident,' the statement said.
'A much-loved and respected family man, friend and business colleague, it is a tremendous shock and he will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know him. We politely request that the family are allowed time and space to come to terms with their loss.'
The vessel (pictured after the crash surrounded by rescue vessels) ploughed into a stretch of rocks and lost its bow in the force of the impact which happened at Il Nibani, just off the coast of Porto Cervo on the island of Sardinia

Just last month Mr Kronsbein featured in an article in the Financial Times on how foreign holidaymakers were returning to the millionaire playground around Porto Cervo.
Describing how he had bought his new home he said: 'We've rented here every summer and I thought it a good time to buy. The houses are built to blend into the hillsides and don't stick out and spoil the landscape.'
MailOnline also revealed today the captain of the Amore, Mario Lallone, has also been placed under investigation by local authorities and will be questioned later today over the crash.
Several other witnesses including four friends of Mr Kronsbein who were on the yacht will also be questioned as will rescuers on other boats that came to help.

Family lawyer Egidio Caredda told MailOnline: 'As you can imagine this has been a terrible shock for the family.
'I was contacted by Mr Kronsbein's son to help them with the situation, and I am giving them all the assistance I can.
'The local authorities are still investigating the exact circumstances and we will also be speaking to witnesses to establish what happened.
'Mr Kronsbein's son Dustin flew out from England when he heard the news and he has been with his mother and sister. They are both very seriously hurt and are receiving significant medical treatment in hospital.'

The yacht was towed off rocks by coastguard vessels and impounded while an investigation is carried out. Coast guards yesterday also sealed off the area where the crash happened until the investigation is completed.
It was reported that an autopsy was expected to be performed on Monday.
One source said: 'The theory is the boat that ran aground was trying frantically to steer out of the way of another which didn't have right of way and she ended up on the rocks.'
One bystander on social media said: 'Five ambulances around a boat last night at Porto Cervo which was towed in. Doesn't look good.'
The MY Amore is registered in the Italian port of Monfalcone near Trieste. However, it is unclear whether the dead Briton had chartered the vessel or owned it.
A picture of the rocks struck by the Amore was released by coastguards and white paint from her hull was clearly visible on the surface of the stones.
This terrifying image taken after the crash laid bare the full extent of the damage - with the bow of the Amore completely torn off with the force of the impact on the rocks
Paint was also left imprinted on the rocks that the vessel hit, killing one and injuring six - two of them with serious wounds. Mr Kronsbien's wife Sabine, 59, and daughter Sophia, 27, were also seriously injured and taken to a hospital at Olbia before being transferred to a more specialist unit at Sassari 60 miles away
Vessels are showed moored in Porto Cervo late on Sunday night after the stricken craft was towed back to shore, where it was met by emergency services
The crash happened near a set of islands called Il Nibani, which are around two miles off the coast from Porto Cervo, Sardinia
Yesterday, coastguard commander Francesco Colarullo told Mail Online: 'The damaged boat was towed back to Porto Cervo and has now been seized by the local prosecutor while the investigation into what happened exactly continues.
'It's possible speed may have been an issue and we know that other vessels were in the area at the time and the accident may have happened while evasive action was taking place.
'Every effort was made to save the life of the British man but there was nothing that could be done and he was unconscious when he was recovered.
'The alarm was raised by the Amore with a mayday and they reported they were taking on water after striking rocks and a rescue operation was immediately launched.
'Two coastguard vessels were involved as well as several other pleasure boats in the area at the time.'
A spokesman for the UK Foreign Office said: 'We are providing support following a maritime accident in Sardinia, including to the family of a dual national who has died. We are in contact with the local authorities.'

WHAT OWNERS SAY ABOUT PALM BEACH MOTOR YACHTS
“I was very impressed with the first boat I bought, a PB50. It was a great boat but more-so, it was Mark’s commitment to quality... getting things right. He is a perfectionist. His whole approach to building a boat… we both come from sailing backgrounds - he likes to build them light and fast and strong. His attitude is ’Near enough is not good enough!’”
STEPHEN AINSWORTH , PB65 “TRIPLE TREAT”
“My relationship with Palm Beach has been excellent since first meeting. My PB45 has classic good looks and is a “head turner” in every harbor, but more importantly it has excellent build quality and all onboard systems, including power and electronics, work flawlessly. And the performance, ride, and handling of my PB45 in any seaway are second to none. There’s always been full access to the entire Palm Beach team, including the president, Mark Richards. Buying my PB45, Le Reve, is one of the better decisions I’ve made in my life.”
DAVE SPALDING , PALM BEACH 45, “LE REVE”
“They’re big, fast, with superior sea handling. I’ve been in 7m (23’) swells behind us with a 2m (7’) chop on top, and on the beam coming from the left-hand side was about a 100 Km/h (54 knots) wind. And not once did any of the waves break over the bow...the bow always came up, which is testimony to how light and strong the boat is. It’s just an incredible sea-handling boat!”
ANDY GREIG , PB65 “RENA G”
“Our experience from the outset of introduction to the team, all the way through the sales process, delivery, and now follow up service has been extraordinary. We have built and owned many yachts, and the response that we have received from Grand Banks/Palm Beach has been truly exceptional. Every detail is addressed, which very obviously filters all the way through the organization. A true first class operation.”
BRIAN DARNELL , PB52, “SOUTHERN DRAW”
“It was love at first sight when we first saw a PB45 at a Florida boat show. Now a few years on, our PB45 BlackSwan looks brand-new, performs flawlessly and easily handles even the heaviest seas. Of course it is still a head turner. The ownership experience has been outstanding with the people of Palm Beach Yachts going the extra mile to ensure it remains so.”
DAVID CLARKE , PALM BEACH 45, “BLACKSWAN”
