Cape Grace provides the perfect V&A Waterfront setting for discovering Cape Town’s enviable location, which offers both centrality and privacy combined with unrivaled views of Table Mountain, the yacht marina and a working harbor. The essence of Cape Grace is an intrinsic desire to understand guests’ needs so as to ensure truly memorable visits. Each one of the 121 guest rooms and suites is unique and has its own story to tell. Even the standard rooms are spacious here, with separate sitting areas, desks, complimentary high-speed internet, and cushioned headboards. Reminiscent of a glamorous Mediterranean yacht moored in the bay under the watchful gaze of the iconic Table Mountain, guests can also relax in an elegant and distinguished outdoor area that overlooks Cape Town’s acclaimed yacht basin.

PROS & THINGS I LIKE

  • Cape Grace enjoys a wonderful, central location on the Victoria & Alfred (V&A) Waterfront, one of Cape Town’s biggest tourist attractions with more than 24 million visitors each year. The V&A Waterfront is the city’s restored original Victorian harbour, that is a now a vibrant mix of a busy commercial harbor and a lively entertainment district, packed with shopping malls, cinemas, museums, restaurants, pubs and even an aquarium.
  • The hotel sits on its own quay along the V&A Waterfront, with the working harbor on one side and a multi-million yacht basin on the other. The quay is connected via a small pedestrian bridge with the most busy parts of the V&A Waterfront (about a 5 minute stroll), yet it’s far enough from the waterfront tourist madness to preserve an exclusive feel of a prestigious, quiet and serene retreat in the midst of the city .
  • The hotel’s eye-catching, red-brick facade has the appearance of an old and charming Victorian-style warehouse building, although it was newly constructed in the 1990s (the hotel officially opened in 1996 as Cape Town’s most exclusive property). The stylish and classic exterior blends well in the setting of the stunningly renovated Victorian harbor, which is sandwiched between the towering Table Mountain and bustling Table Bay harbor.
  • A nice and original feature is the roving flower trolley near the entrance, where guests can order special flower arrangements or even have flowers delivered to their rooms upstairs.
  • The communal areas of the hotel, including the lobby and its adjacent library, feature an opulent decor , with colonial-style furniture, thick carpets, impressive wall paintings, timber wood flooring, and draped curtains. One of the lobby’s most prominent features is the bountiful and continually refreshed floral displace that decorates the space. Overall, the decor gives the hotel a very warm and homely feel.
  • The hotel has 121 spacious suites & rooms , located over four guest floors. Room on the western site of the property enjoy Table Mountains views, while those on the east side (entrance side) of the hotel look out over the working harbor. During my visit, I stayed in a so-called “rooftop luxury room”, which featured a classic, navy inspired decor with the bed-side wall completely covered in a mirror. A true ‘room with a view’, it felt like a loft-like space with the added luxury of a rooftop breakfast patio from which to appreciate the sights Table Mountain. The room also had a separate dressing room, a marble bathroom (with bathtub, two sinks, a shower, and separate toilet), and an intimate reading area, complete with a selection of books.
  • In 2014, the hotel added an elegant, outdoor pool area to its main building, which resembles a luxurious pool deck of a cruise ship. Complete with a sunken lounge, a rim flow pool, a fashionable bar and a sun deck with comfortable loungers, the space features several nautical elements which heighten the experience of “being at sea”.
  • The hotel has only one restaurant, but it serves mouth-watering food . Led by Executive Chef, Malika van Reenen, Signal Restaurant offers creative Cape cuisine that’s fresh and inventive, drawing on influences from the many nationalities and customs that have shaped this region since being settled in 1652; namely Dutch and British settlers, French Huguenots, Asian traders and African cultures. The menu is seasonal, with the tasting menu changing regularly which is not to be missed! Breakfast is also served at Signal Restaurant, with a lovely buffet spread featuring plenty of choices in addition to an à la carte menu for the hot dishes.
  • The hotel bar, designated ‘Bascule’, is a favorite among locals and guests. Located on the water’s edge, Bascule is the perfect setting to take in the sights and sounds of the busy yacht marina and Waterfront surrounds. There are over 500 whiskies from around the world and an impressive selection of the finest Cape wines on offer. By day Bascule Bar is a lively and vibrant destination, to enjoy a cappuccino or light lunch. By night, the space is transformed into a glamorous whisky, wine and cocktail Bar , where connoisseurs and social butterflies gather in equal measure to enjoy a slice of Cape Town’s social life.
  • Cape Grace has a small but excellent spa , with adjacent, fully equipped gym facility, on site. It offers special Kalahari signature massages, and QMS Medicosmetics anti-ageing treatments. One of the best things about the spa is the wonderful terrace with spectacular Table Mountain views, where one can relax after a treatment.
  • The hotel offers  complimentary high-speed internet  to all its guests throughout the hotel.
  • There is allocated parking for guests in front of the hotel. In addition, if you don’t have or don’t want to use a car in Cape Town, you can also make use of the hotel’s complimentary chauffeur service  within a radius of 10km (6m) from the hotel, which takes you to the city center, the Table Mountain cable car, and Cape Town’s most glorious beach (Camps Bay).
  • The service at the hotel is excellent . All of the staff I met during my two night stay – from the check-in staff to restaurant waiters and managers – were charming, professional and helpful. Of special note the concierge service, reception and guest services are amongst the best I have experienced.
  • The charming hotel is not part of one of the larger hotel chains. It property is  individually owned by people who love Cape Town as much as I do.

CONS & THINGS TO KNOW

Although the hotel is 20 years old and experiences stiff competition from newer luxury properties at the V&A Waterfront – such as the nearby  One&Only Cape Town and the newly opened  The Silo  –  Cape Grace still prides itself on being one of the best hotels in Cape Town (and it is). The location is hard to beat, and the food, facilities and service are top-notch. Yet, you may want to know the following when considering a stay here:

  • The enclosed pool area is quite small  and undersized for such a large hotel. When the hotel is fully occupied, I can imagine it gets very crowded here, with little place to sit. The pool itself is also rather small, hence why I was it cleverly designed to resemble a cruise ship pool (where pools are always on the tiny side).
  • The  old English Georgian traditional feel  will not fit the taste of those that prefer a modern, light and minimalist decor. However, if you like grand, old-world style hotels, then stop looking further as the Cape Grace is your best bet for a stay in Cape Town.
  • The views from the guest rooms are mixed . If you are located on the eastern side of the hotel, you will face the working dock area of the harbor with the main entrance below, which can be quite loud from time to time. On the other side the rooms have lovely views of the yacht harbor with an enticing backdrop view of Table Mountain.
  • Location: 8/10

  • Resort grounds: 8/10
  • Rooms: 8/10

  • Service: 9/10

TIPS FOR FUTURE GUESTS & SAVE MONEY

  • Save money : read my  tips  for getting the best deal at a luxury hotel like Ellerman House (and/or receive many free perks).
  • Save money : enjoy free VIP amenities when booking via  Virtuoso  (e.g. upgrade, free daily breakfast, a 50 minute spa treatment, early check-in and late check-out, a bottle of wine, and a complimentary minibar consisting of a selection of local wines, beer and soft drinks).
  • I recommend to book or request one of the (more expensive) rooms on the hotel’s west side, since these rooms are quieter and come with lovely views of Table Mountain.
  • Read my  tips  for preparing your trip in time.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

Cape Town’s hot, dry summer months run from late October to early April. Temperatures reach their peak between December and February, and this is generally seen as when to go to Cape Town for the best beach weather. Winter months (May to September) can be a wet, cold and rather disappointing affair.

HOW TO GET THERE

Cape Grace is located a 20 minute drive from Cape Town International Airport. The latter is served by the major African full-service and low-cost airlines, as well as by most major European and Middle East Carriers (click  here  for a direct link to their websites). Currently, Singapore Airlines is the only Asian carrier to serve this marvelous destination. Check the  Wikipedia page  of Cape Town International Airport for an updated list of airlines that offer direct flights to Cape Town.

Top 10: my favorite Hyatt hotels in the world

Cape Grace is one of the best hotels I’ve ever stayed in. From the moment you walk to the door and they greet you with”welcome home”. The service is outstanding, the location is great, and the hotel rooms and public areas are so beautifully decorated. It’s a must stay hotel 10/10 for me

One of Cape Town’s Most Luxurious Hotels Just Had a No-Expenses-Spared Renovation — and We Were Among the First to Visit

From the statement-making chandeliers to the stunning new tasting menu restaurant, grande dame Cape Grace is back in full force.

How to Book

Food and drink, activities and experiences, family-friendly offerings, accessibility and sustainability, how to get the most value out of your stay.

When I spent a month in Cape Town in February during the annual Art Week, I hotel-hopped around some of the city’s finest, but the one everyone in town couldn’t stop chatting about hadn’t even reopened its doors yet. When Cape Grace , a legend that’s hosted presidents and A-listers, was acquired and slated for a complete (and much-needed) renovation to become a Fairmont-managed hotel, everyone wondered how much of the grande dame’s character would be preserved. But when you enlist the help of 1508 London — the interior design studio behind the new Raffles London at The OWO , whose design has been overwhelmingly praised — you know you’re in safe hands.

When I returned in May during the hotel’s soft opening, I asked a local friend, Charl Francois Edwards, editor-in-chief of South African legacy design magazine House & Leisure , if he’d like to join me for dinner and a glance at my room — one of the twin, adjoinable waterfront penthouse suites. His first question was, “Are you staying in the same room the Clintons once did?”

Hovering on a private quay like an island between the V&A Waterfront and yacht marina, Cape Grace was one of the first hotels built in the area when it debuted nearly 30 years ago. Its ochre facade and sloped, Parisian-style mansard roofs are subtle yet form one of the most recognizable façades in the city — especially with Table Mountain as a backdrop.

“It has become synonymous with Cape Town and the V&A Waterfront,” added Edwards, who, like so many others in town, was relieved the renovation preserved this part of the hotel’s heritage. “1508 London has transformed the space into something more modern and of our time, introducing a contemporary touch while still respecting its legacy and rich — and complex — history. This is no easy feat, welcoming the new while keeping loyal regulars happy.”

When a hotel lands on Travel + Leisure’s list of top city hotels in Africa for an impressive 20-plus years, not only can it keep locals happy, but it can stand the test of time and continue to attract regulars and newcomers alike. This is especially true of its rebirth as a Fairmont.

As I stepped out onto my penthouse’s expansive terrace in time for the last sliver of sunset, I was blown away by the views — which I had seen from multiple angles, multiple times. Table Mountain never gets old, but there’s something even more magical about Cape Town when you feel like you’re floating over the water in a penthouse as spacious as a superyacht — especially when there’s a private jacuzzi on the terrace. I savored the view the rest of the weekend, waking with the sun, stepping on the bedroom’s balcony with a Nespresso, and soaking in the oversized marble tub, which — you guessed it! — opens to another balcony.

“One of the big advantages we have is location,” says South Africa-based French chef Gregory Czarnecki, who curated signature restaurant Heirloom’s new concept and tasting menu experience. “We’re in the hub of Cape Town — nothing busier than the Waterfront — yet it’s relatively quiet. For Heirloom, I wanted a clean look, something timeless, and an intimate setting.”

Formerly called Signal, the rechristened restaurant is one of the most striking parts of the hotel’s transformation. Taking a swift departure from the previous, more formal setting (18th-century furniture designs, screens used in traditional Cape Dutch homes), the airy dining room capitalizes on its location, inviting views of the water and Table Mountain to flood through arched, floor-to-ceiling windows.

Known for his “contemporary minimalist” style of cuisine, Chef Czarnecki, who spent a dozen years at Waterkloof in the Cape Winelands and was a judge on MasterChef South Africa , allows carefully sourced South African products to shine through pared-down dishes that may only feature one or two ingredients: winter truffles hail from KwaZulu-Natal, apples from the Elgin region, hake from Hout Bay, and Karoo beef from Prieska in the Northern Cape.

“In the past, [chefs] followed old rules of luxury — abundance and more and more — always asking, ‘What can we add?’” he says. “I’m the complete opposite — what can we remove? We’re showcasing the beauty of simple ingredients and specific items you can’t find anywhere else.”

And the same philosophy applies to the revitalized hotel. Read on for my full review of Cape Town’s new Cape Grace.

  • Sleek, spacious rooms bring the city’s natural beauty indoors through expansive windows and balconies or terraces showing off landmarks like Table Mountain and the V&A Waterfront.
  • Artwork, like artist Galia Gluckman’s duo of statement-making lobby pieces, champion South African artists, while the sleek, tiered steel chandelier in the lobby pays tribute to 1950s Murano hand-blown smoked-glass fixtures.
  • Local favorite Library Lounge redefines the notion of a lobby bar with jewel-toned wingback chairs positioned around wall-to-wall windows, objet d’art -filled shelves, Hermès orange-colored leather Chesterfield sofas, and a tucked-away, marble-clad bar that draws a younger, stylish set.
  • Bascule Bar & Lounge combines the intimacy of a speakeasy with the sophistication of a cigar lounge featuring jazz in the backdrop and the largest whiskey selection in the Southern Hemisphere.
  • The secluded locale is quiet but within walking distance of some of the city’s top attractions, restaurants and bars, and shopping, like the recently revamped boutique Alfred Mall, anchored by African design concept shop AAFRICAA.
  • Address: West Quay Road Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, Cape Town Central 8001 South Africa

The hotel has 112 rooms and suites spread across 12 categories; the pièce de la résistance is the two-bedroom, butler-serviced Cape Grace Suite, which sprawls across 2,906 square feet (and arguably sports one of the best terraces in town, showing off a 180-degree panorama of the marina and Table Mountain). You’re guaranteed gorgeous views from French windows in all the rooms, which were previously antique-filled, colonial-inspired spaces. With the revamp, 1508 London dropped the dreary dark color palette and dated carpets in favor of soft, sophisticated touches like contemporary art, earth-toned ceramics and rugs, marble-topped tables, and mid-century modern-style, dark wood- and rattan-clad curio cabinets. You’ll find Fairmont’s signature Le Labo Rose 31 amenities, but that’s one of the sole threads (apart from the attentive service) nodding to the management brand — Cape Grace’s rooms are firmly rooted in its location: shelves are filled with mismatched books on best walks in the Cape and activist memoirs while mini-bars are expertly stocked with South African wines and fynbos scrub-infused spirits.

At Heirloom, diners can opt for the traditional four- or seven-course tasting menu or choose a pescatarian or plant-based version, where seasonally shifting dishes may include seaweed tartare with lemongrass and saffron or celeriac with tomato teriyaki sauce and smoked tomato. All-day dining and afternoon tea are available at the neighboring Library Bar, where cocktails also pay tribute to the Cape with drinks (including non-alcoholic versions) like the Fynbos Bees Knees, a bright blend of gin, fynbos honey, fresh lemon, and honeycomb. The subterranean, cigar lounge-style Bascule will be the finishing touch of the hotel’s trifecta. When it reopens this summer, the locally loved bar will offer more than 400 types of whiskey, which can be sipped with tapas on the terrace or sampled during tastings.

When I first toured the hotel in February, the weather was balmy, and I couldn’t imagine a more inviting spot to spend the day than with a glass of MCC (South African sparkling wine) on a poolside chaise longue. Spilling out from Heirloom, the sunken pool lounge and bar was initially intended to resemble a yacht deck (a nod to the hotel’s harborside location) and still maintains hints of the nautical theme in the form of sailor-striped pillows and a palette of pastels that would feel right at home in the South of France.

When the fitness center reopens, it’ll be outfitted with top-of-the-line equipment, but the beauty of a destination like Cape Town is that the city is a natural playground, offering everything from paragliding over the beaches and mountains to shark cage diving and sunrise hikes up Lion’s Head. The concierge can arrange tours and tailor-made experiences, such as a curated art tour of contemporary and traditional galleries, a family-friendly boat excursion discovering the Western Cape’s Marine Big 5, or a Jeep tour through dunes and vineyards.

When the Fairmont Spa opens this summer, it will feature three treatment rooms, including a couple’s room with a double steam shower and a salt room, a steam room, and a sauna. The philosophy behind the spa embraces nature and sense of place, offering tailored bath rituals and guided meditation, as well as treatments working with products like Cape Town-based holistic spa brand Bellabaci.

I sampled a massage in the temporary spa suite, where I took my pick of scent (I chose a circulation-boosting mix of Cape chestnut, rosemary, cypress, juniper, bay leaf, bergamot, and cedarwood essential oils) and settled into a tailor-made, hour-long treatment that worked out the lingering kinks in my neck and shoulders from the long flight over. The wellness program Fairmont Fit is also slated to roll out at the hotel, so guests can take advantage of fitness gear delivered to their rooms and activities like guided Table Mountain hikes.

Family-friendly is an understatement at Cape Grace: The hotel goes above and beyond with arrival gifts like activity packs, Africa-themed story time and crafting activities, spa treatments for tweens and teens, and tons of in-room offerings, including teepee tents, turn-down service with candy, and Xbox and PlayStation consoles. Two- and three-bedroom suites can accommodate larger groups or families traveling together, and amenities like toddler beds, bottle sterilizers, mini-bar locks, and bath toys are available on request.

The hotel has entrance ramps and three accessible guest rooms offering ramp access to the balcony, which shows off mountain views, and rail assistance around the bath (shower and bath seats are also available). Cape Grace limits single-use plastic, instead providing reusable water bottles, refillable Le Labo toiletries (dispensers are made of recycled plastic), and custom-made bamboo guest room key cards. The kitchen also focuses heavily on working with sustainable suppliers, avoiding overfished species, and sources as locally and seasonally as possible.

Tucked away on a private quay in the central V&A Waterfront, Cape Grace is an ideal base for travelers (especially first-timers) who want to feel like they’re in the heart of it all while still being removed from the touristic foot traffic dominating the busy area. It’s walking distance from the Robben Island ferry gateway, the Watershed design market, and the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa, the continent’s largest contemporary African art museum. One of the more recent additions, the hip food hall Time Out Market , is right near the hotel and home to outposts of some of the city’s favorites, like Ramenhead, How Bao Now, and Culture Wine, making it easy to cross off a few Cape Town classics all in one go.

From the V&A Waterfront, you can hop on a helicopter, glide around Table Mountain and nearby beaches like Clifton and Camps Bay, or cruise the coast on a private yacht at sunset. And when you’re ready to explore more of the city (we have plenty of tips for organizing your trip in our guide here ), Uber is an easy and affordable option — and you can even reserve rides to nearby areas like the Cape Winelands, which are a little over an hour away.

Cape Grace is managed by Fairmont Hotels and Resorts, which is part of the hospitality group Accor. Members of the loyalty program ALL - Accor Live Limitless can use points to book rooms and benefit from perks like preferential room rates, room or suite upgrades, and dining and spa rewards. Harbour View Rooms start at $950 per night, and the signature Cape Grace Suite starts at $10,000 per night.

Cape Grace: Freshly Renovated, Still Cape Town’s Charm Shines

Debuting a new look (and new management), Cape Grace remains a fixture on Cape Town's Waterfront.

By Luke Abrahams

Cape Grace exterior V&A Waterfront Hotel

While my South African heritage might have me a little biased, I have no shame in saying that Cape Town is an absolutely amazing place. It’s got soul, swagger, spunk…but perhaps the most wondrous thing about the place is its no-frills attitude towards a colorful lifestyle – and every shade of it.

Vibrancy is what the African continent is all about. It’s emotive, passionate, curious, introspective and quite literally every adjective in between. From top to bottom , this ginormous land mass – one I have always affectionately dubbed as ‘the lungs of the Earth’ – gives anyone and everyone a fine lesson in how to have a good time and enjoy the fruits and wonders life presents.

The freshly renovated and newly reopened Cape Grace hotel is no exception.

Cape Grace lobby interior

If you are a first-timer to the city, most locals will tell you there is perhaps no better place to stay than on the marina . There’s good reason, too. Location-wise, you’d be stumped to find a better spot. The Cape Grace is slap bang in the middle of the marina on a private quay on the edge of the famed V&A Waterfront, surrounded by shops, bars , restaurants , museums , the newbie Time Out Market and, of course, the city’s towering icon, the forever moody Table Mountain .

Then there’s the hotel’s rather exquisite backstory. The Cape Grace has been a fixture in this part of the world for the best part of 30 years and as a result has cemented its place as one of the city’s finest abodes to plant your tush in. A-List stars from the worlds of celebrity and politics (cue the Clintons) have rested their weary heads here in between the chaos of their schedules. Over the years, the hotel amassed loyal devotees, who, since it first swung opened its doors, have been transfixed by its eclectic colorful style, colonial architecture and portraiture.

Cape Grace lobby interior design

Alas, time was not kind, and over the years, despite the character, a few cracks started to show, and it was time for a nip-tuck. Enter Accor. Once the big suits acquired the hotel, it was quickly reimagined as a Fairmont -managed modern palace in which (quite literally) nothing escaped a sledgehammer.

In place of all the fineries, dripping chandeliers and all the former fuddy-duddy, over-the-topness is a fresh, new and (dare I say it) clinical interpretation of the space that now features the addition of a fully kitted out wellness space – also “a lot more windows,” so the long-time staff tell me.

Clean lines and marbles reign supreme in virtually every corner with polished floors and glossy light fixtures that offer an extra dose of bling, thanks to interior and architecture firm 15o8 London.

Business and family types will love it; grand dame whizzes and peak maximalists will hate it. But while the cookie-cutter look of the chain hotel might put some folk off, what the hotel does well is jazzy art. Handpicked local artwork has been chosen from an impeccable network of creatives that shines a light on all sorts of contemporary African issues, from body politics to history, prosperity, hope, nature and fantastical urban projects.

Standouts include Paul Edmunds’ two bronze caracals found in the cushy cabinet of curiosities that is the library. And Galia Gluckman’s Sunrise and Sunset (commissioned especially for the newly renovated Cape Grace) crown the reception space, and both simply stun. It’s also worth spending a few hours flicking through the vintage National Geographics littered about the place, not just for a throwback trip down memory lane but also to indulge in the sweet bookish stench of print literature .

interior bedroom suite Cape Grace

The 121 rooms are just as light, breezy and airy as the rest of the hotel. My double apartment suite on the third floor donned two beds, two bathrooms, a vast lounge, kitted out in modern totems, art, and flashy light fixtures, plus a colossal balcony that has exceptional views of the marina and Table Mountain.

Design touches came in the form of vivid rugs, books (Mandela’s memoir as per standard) Cape plants and a minibar stashed with all sorts of goods. It’s modern luxe living, and on the grandest of scales, too.

Acclaimed chef Gregory Czarnecki rustles up the grub at the hotel’s restaurant, Heirloom. The French-born Czarnecki’s culinary pedigree shines most in the restaurant’s tasting menus, where dishes like lobster Dugléré and quail egg with onion soubise wow. Beyond the fancy, the basics also shine.

I was obsessed with both the bread and smoked butter, alongside the fantastic service where staff actively encouraged you to try their personal favorites: local hake, South Coast rock lobster, tender three-way cooked chicken, Karoo wagyu beef, to name a few.

cape grace yachts

Breakfast, also served here, rustles up the classics, including what one chef dubbed “the world’s best omelet”. Granola, fresh fruit, and all the other usual suspects make up the supporting roles, too. If you like booze, check into the Bascule Bar to savor 400 types of whisky .

The beauty of staying here is that you are virtually in the middle of it all. The Waterfront is on your doorstep, as are kayaking tours of the bay and a rendezvous to the historical Robben Island. The concierge team here can virtually do anything.

Rough seas cut short my planned adventure on the water, and thanks to Aidan and his team, it was not long before I was whizzing around the mountain and the Cape of Good Hope on a chopper. The moral of the story? When tasked with a problem, they solve it, and well.

Police: Vehicular homicide charges expected to be filed against man involved in Cape crash

Portrait of Rachael Devaney

Yarmouth Police expect to file vehicular homicide by negligent driving charges against an Oquossoc, Maine man after a crash in Yarmouth that killed a teen and left others seriously injured.

"(Criminal) charges are expected to be filed," said Yarmouth Police Officer Nicholas Giammarco. "We think they'll be filed with the court in the next few days."

Giammarco said a criminal citation was presented to Peter Richmond, 81, after his Cadillac Escalade allegedly struck a boat trailer on North Dennis Road on Aug. 30.

John Hughan, of Norwell, has been identified as the 14-year-old boy who was killed in the crash, according to a Yarmouth Police Department press release.

Cape and Islands District Attorney's Office Director of Community Programs Danielle Whitney told the Times Monday she had no information about charges for Richmond.

SUV strikes vehicle and boat trailer in breakdown lane

Hughan and another passenger in the vehicle were outside their vehicle tending to an axle failure on a trailer and boat being towed by their vehicle, according to a Yarmouth Police accident report.

While Hughan and the other passenger were tending to the breakdown, Richmond, who was traveling South on North Dennis Road in a Cadillac Escalade, struck the rear of the boat trailer, according to the police accident report. The boat was propelled off the trailer and into the rear of Peter Hughan's vehicle.

Around 1 p.m., Yarmouth police responded to several 911 calls reporting a person was pinned between a boat and the vehicle towing it. Hughan was killed and two others were taken to Cape Cod Hospital.

Richmond remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation.

Yarmouth Police and the Cape Cod Regional Law Enforcement Council Crash Reconstruction Unit are investigating.
