Boat Review: Fountaine Pajot Astrea 42

Based in La Rochelle, the French builder Fountaine Pajot has been crafting good-looking, well-designed, dependable cruising catamarans for over four decades now, and they have the drill down pat. I’ve always found their boats to be well put-together, fun to sail and with all the boxes ticked with regard to comfort, ­innovation and performance, both underway and with the hook down. Simply put, they’re cool cats. Their new Astréa 42 more than holds her own in the company’s wide range, which now extends from 40 to 67 feet.

It’s probably apparent that I’m a fan of the brand, but I’m not alone. When the company unveiled plans for the Astréa at the Cannes Boat Show two years ago, the following few months they took over 150 orders for the boat…before a single one was launched. By any measure, it was an immediate success.

It’s funny, with monohulls we’ve come to accept so-called “traditional” layouts: owner’s cabin with double berth forward; saloon with dining table centrally located; galley and navigation station to either side, respectively, of the companionway. But over the years, catamaran design has evolved in such a way that cats have established their own traditional accommodations plan as well: double doors connecting the saloon with the spacious cockpit; helm station raised to starboard; galley stationed aside the doors for convenience and entertaining; settee, dining table and nav station forward in the saloon; and sleeping cabins stashed in the hulls (often, with one hull reserved exclusively for the owners with a luxurious bed, small office, lots of storage, and a dedicated head and shower).

That’s the menu here, executed with an extra helping of French style and panache. I loved the arrangement of the raised helm station, with the space split between two compartments, or pods. The forward one contains all the sailing controls—the sheets, traveler and Lewmar winches, including an electric one for raising the hefty, square-topped mainsail. The aft pod is for the helmsman, and includes a bench seat for two, a full suite of Garmin instruments and autopilot, the engine controls, and even the buttons for raising and lowering the Quick windlass, because why not? Hop up a few steps, and there’s access to the sun deck and cushions on the coach roof which, come to think of it, has become another traditional feature for so many cat builders.

Likewise, the company has done a sensational job with the owner’s cabin that runs the length of the starboard hull and can be closed off into a truly private space. The queen berth aft is terrific, with easy side access. The centralized desk is a place where you could really get some work done. Storage closets and drawers abound. The separated head and gargantuan shower stall all the way forward would be the envy of many a high-end hotel. Once you’re aboard the Astréa, you’d need a really good reason to step off.

Fountaine Pajot is mindful of saving weight in the building process, as heavy cats are not lively ones. The infused hulls employ balsa core in the topsides, to just below the waterline; the injected decks are cored with foam. All the bulkheads are composite laminates, though Alpi wood is used for the furniture and trim. The small keels, which enhance tracking and stability, are sacrificial blades that are glued to the hulls, not bolted, so in the unfortunate event of a hard grounding, they’ll shear off and not compromise the vessel’s integrity. The engine compartments are vast and accessible. All the wiring is clearly labeled—though in French. Attention to detail has been paid throughout.

We test sailed the boat in light fall weather on Chesapeake Bay, when the breeze failed to rise above 6 knots. Still we had a nice sail, nearly notching 4 knots of boat speed both upwind and on a reach. The twin headsails ­provide some versatility in shifting gears in relation to wind speed and angle. My notes were simple: “Tight steering. Fun to drive.”

The Astréa we sailed, nicely equipped, came in at $645,000 . Many new owners take delivery in France and initially explore Europe and the Med, sampling plenty of local cuisine, before sailing on. In so many ways, it’d be one tasty trip.

The design of Fountaine Pajot Astrea   42 allows flexible movement at sea and pleasure of sailing while at the helm station, with direct communication with all exterior relaxing spaces from the cockpit to the coachroof. A sun lounger is built-in on the coachroof, next to the double seat helm. In the cockpit, the Astrea 42 can be equipped with an optional plancha grill to fully enjoy this space together, as well as the Beach Club embedded gangway.

• The Bali 4.2 has all the popular and successful trademarks expected of the Bali catamaran range. It has the huge open platform which provides a convertible indoor/outdoor living space using tilting “garage door” that lifts up into the ceiling. The convertible door is a unique feature on the Bali. When open, it look like a much bigger catamaran. The Bali 4.2 also features a door in the front of the salon that opens up onto the expansive forward cockpit. With the 4.2 Bali has adopted the newer trend of “Jack & Jill” bathrooms in the 4-cabin version which creates more space in the cabins. The big American-style refrigerator is another popular feature especially for families and liveaboards.
• The Lagoon 42 is one of the most popular models for cruising couples. She is a beefy and a very comfortable liveaboard catamaran with an oversized cockpit. The mast is centered in the salon which could be a deal breaker for some, but considering how many L42s we have sold, it does not seem to bother the people who own and adore them. The galley lacks storage, but there is space available to add cabinets and baskets. The cabins are ample with island beds and plenty of storage, particularly the owner’s cabin. It features the “Jack & Jill” bathrooms in the 4-cabin version, a great use of space.
• The Leopard 42 features all the popular and successful trademarks of the hugely successful Leopard 50. Like its big sister, it features the opening door to an intimate forward cockpit. The semi-raised helm station and “upper lounge area” is a very well done and a great feature for cruisers. It is luxuriously finished and all bunks are island berths that allow access from both sides. The forward-facing galley is well-designed.
• The Fountaine Pajot Astréa 42 is plush and comfortable catamaran with a well-appointed galley and sliding doors that open the salon up to the very big cockpit. The cabins are a nicely sized and spacious with island beds.

I have two specs that I would like to see on all four of these. The first is holding tank capacity. I find the holding tank capacity on most boats insufficient for live aboards. The other is air draft. The 42 foot and below range are ones that in the Southern US we have bridge anxiety. I would like to know if any of these have an ICW friendly mast option and what the height is.

In addition to Jay’s request… I would like to see some sort of price/performance/construction comparison too.

I’ve been a mono-hull sailor and live-aboard all of my life, but really am a novice with catamarans. I’m fairly familiar with the Leopard 44, having chartered them several times and really like them. I’m anxious to find out about what else is out there so I can make the best decision possible for my next boat. I’m really interested in a cat because I feel like I can sail a catamaran further into my later years then a mono hull.

Ron, I suggest you join the Bali Discussion if you can on the 27th of August [2020] on Zoom. Many of these questions will be answered during that discussion. As regards to your question about “price/performance/construction comparison” – I am not too sure what you want to know. I have added base prices in the comparison charts for all the models. The weight vs sail area (power) has some impact of course but for hulls of similar water length and hull shapes as these models have, performance for all four models will be similar, give or take a knot or so.

Bateaux de tourisme sur deux coques : la concurrence du Leopard 42

Les valeurs mesurées lors du test du leopard 42, le léopard 42 en détail, prix et chantier naval, évaluation yacht du leopard 42.

Le marché a récemment connu de profonds changements, explique Arnaud Savignat, directeur des ventes pour les catamarans Leopard en Europe. Alors qu'il y a quelques années encore, environ 70 pour cent de la production totale était directement destinée à la location de yachts, environ la moitié des bateaux construits par Leopard sont aujourd'hui vendus à des propriétaires privés. L'une des raisons de ce changement est notamment le modèle d'affrètement à l'achat, apparemment lucratif pour les intéressés.

En d'autres termes, des particuliers achètent le bateau, mais le font d'abord louer pour une durée déterminée par des sociétés d'affrètement réputées et perçoivent en contrepartie des paiements mensuels sous forme de rendement. Pendant la durée fixée, les affréteurs s'occupent des frais d'amarrage, de l'entretien, de la maintenance et des assurances. En outre, le propriétaire peut également utiliser son bateau lui-même, mais uniquement pendant les périodes convenues à l'avance.

Ces modèles de financement, qui semblent être de nouveau installés plus fréquemment, sont de véritables moteurs de vente pour les fabricants. Ils ne concernent évidemment pas que les catamarans Leopard, construits par Robertson and Caine au Cap.

Avec environ 200 unités par an, le chantier naval fait partie des producteurs leaders du marché dans la branche et, en tant que concurrent solide, il tient tête aux grandes marques comme Lagoon ou Fountaine Pajot. Environ la moitié de la production est destinée aux États-Unis, car les trajets y sont plus courts et la livraison plus simple. En Europe, les catamarans arrivent le plus souvent en tant que chargement de pont sur un cargo ou sont transférés, ce qui coûte de l'argent supplémentaire. Et pas des moindres : environ 30.000 euros s'ajoutent au prix de base pour la livraison en Europe. Ce que les acheteurs doivent savoir.

Programme gérable

Le chantier naval vient de présenter le Leopard 42 pour remplacer le Leopard 40. Avec une longueur de coque de 12,67 mètres, le nouveau navire est toutefois environ 70 centimètres plus long et plus large que son prédécesseur. Ainsi, le Leopard quitte la catégorie d'entrée de gamme de 40 pieds de longueur de coque et rejoint plutôt le segment suivant de 42 pieds, qui est maintenant plus actuel avec des modèles plus récents - une étape logique par rapport à la concurrence.

Pour le concept, cela signifie : beaucoup plus d'espace et de confort d'habitation dans les coques ainsi que des versions aménagées avec jusqu'à quatre cabines avec quatre salles de bain correspondantes et des salles de douche au moins à moitié séparées. Cela correspond désormais au standard de la classe des 42 pieds. Comme pour ses concurrents (Fountaine Pajot Astréa 42 et Lagoon 42), Leopard renonce à l'option d'une cabine de skipper supplémentaire dans le gaillard d'avant, qui était encore disponible auparavant.

Construit exclusivement en Afrique du Sud

La gamme de Robertson and Caine est nettement plus restreinte que les lignes des marques de catamarans dominantes en France. Actuellement, le portefeuille du chantier naval ne compte que trois bateaux de 42, 45 et 50 pieds. Fountaine Pajot, en revanche, a sept modèles dans son programme, de 40 à 70 pieds de longueur de coque au maximum ; et le leader du marché, Lagoon, propose actuellement pas moins de dix types dans une gamme de longueurs similaire.

Les navires Leopard sont construits exclusivement en Afrique du Sud, et toutes les pièces sont entièrement fabriquées par infusion sous vide en tant que construction sandwich avec un noyau en mousse, de la résine vinylester pour la couche extérieure et de la résine polyester pour la structure stratifiée intérieure. Seuls le dessous de la ligne de flottaison, la zone de l'arbre de gouvernail et l'accastillage sur le pont sont entièrement stratifiés. En outre, le chantier naval intègre une traverse en acier dans la poutre avant comme élément de liaison structurelle pour renforcer encore la structure et éviter une trop grande torsion entre les coques ; c'est un sujet important pour les catamarans en général. Les bouts de quille sans lest sont simplement collés à la coque, sans être vissés ni laminés. En cas d'échouage, ils doivent se cisailler sans endommager la structure. Malgré cela, ils sont suffisamment solides pour que le bateau puisse être posé dessus sans problème.

Un félin agile

Le Leopard 42 est à la disposition de la rédaction de YACHT à Saint-Raphaël, sur la Côte d'Azur, pour un test. Avec les conditions de vent et de météo typiques : beaucoup de soleil, mais peu de vent autour de dix nœuds (3 Beaufort), parfois un peu plus. Avec le voilage standard simple (génois chevauchant, grand voile lattée), la construction du studio Simonis/Voogd se met rapidement et bien en route, navigue à 6,0 nœuds et vire sur un angle de 90 degrés. Ce sont des valeurs étonnamment bonnes pour un catamaran de croisière qui n'exige que peu de performances et de sportivité.

Le Sud-Africain convainc également par ses caractéristiques de manœuvres vives. Les virements de bord peuvent être effectués rapidement, sans perdre beaucoup de vitesse. Et le bateau, de construction plutôt lourde avec un poids total de 12,5 tonnes, réagit rapidement et immédiatement à la barre. Cela vaut également pour les opérations à la machine dans le port, où le Leopard 42 peut être déplacé facilement et à volonté grâce à ses deux moteurs intégrés de 45 CV. Les deux saildrives sont installés devant les safrans et sont donc plus efficaces en cas de poussée vers l'avant. En route sous la machine, le catamaran atteint tout de même 9,4 nœuds à pleine charge, en marche (80 pour cent du régime maximal), la vitesse est encore de 8,5 nœuds.

Le Leopard 42 est utilisable d'une seule main

Le pilotage à la voile du Leopard 42 n'est pas non plus un plaisir émotionnel avéré, mais se réduit à la simple direction et au maintien du cap, ce qui, comme chacun sait, est plus ou moins le cas de presque tous les catamarans de croisière. Dans la pratique, c'est donc le pilote automatique qui prend le plus souvent le relais. Si l'on souhaite toutefois piloter soi-même le Léopard plus souvent et plus longtemps, la roue du poste de pilotage est montée trop bas, surtout si l'on souhaite s'asseoir sur le banc haut. Il est plus facile de piloter debout, derrière la roue ou sur le côté. Mais dans ce cas, on manque de visibilité, surtout lors des manœuvres dans le port.

Les drisses, les écoutes, les pinces et les winchs sont faciles à manier. L'agencement est très bien pensé et facile à manier d'une seule main. C'est un avantage certain sur le Leopard 42, car il n'y a que peu de place au poste de pilotage et on s'y sent déjà très à l'étroit à deux. La manipulation est facilitée par un équipement de base de très haute qualité avec des butées puissantes, de grands winchs de Lewmar ainsi que des poulies et des rouleaux bien dimensionnés. Chez Leopard, cela fait partie des standards de construction.

Exclusif avec lounge sur le toit

L'un des trois winchs est électrique, les autres sont équipés de moteurs en option, ce qui est recommandé. En effet, le génois standard, qui se chevauche assez largement, ainsi que la grand-voile, largement déployée au sommet, développent dès les vents moyens des charges importantes qui ne peuvent être maîtrisées qu'à grand renfort de manivelle de winch. La grand-voile est d'ailleurs réglée à l'aide de deux bouées séparées qui compensent la fonction du traveller malheureusement inexistant sur le bimini. Le système Hahnepot est certes simple, efficace et économique, mais il oblige aussi à un surcroît de travail, car la grand-voile doit toujours être réglée à nouveau après les manœuvres. Seuls les navigateurs actifs apprécieront vraiment ce système.

L'espace lounge dédié sur le flybridge est une exclusivité du Leopard 42 dans sa catégorie de longueur. Chez les concurrents directs des grandes séries de produits, l'étage supérieur se limite à l'offre de chaises longues. Le salon aéré et panoramique sur le toit n'est accessible que par l'escalier à bâbord, et non par l'autre côté depuis le poste de pilotage. Si l'homme de barre doit monter rapidement sur le toit, par exemple pour éclaircir quelque chose, il doit soit entreprendre une escalade audacieuse, soit sprinter autour du cockpit pour atteindre la montée de l'autre côté.

Aménagement selon les normes de la classe

Pour l'aménagement intérieur, l'acheteur a le choix. La version pour les propriétaires est la version avec deux cabines et deux salles d'eau à bâbord, ainsi qu'une longue cabine principale séparée à tribord avec un bureau, plus d'espace de rangement et une grande salle de bain, douche comprise, à l'avant. Sur la variante destinée à l'utilisation charter, les coques sont aménagées de manière identique, c'est-à-dire avec quatre cabines et quatre salles de bain au total. Cette variation correspond à la norme dans la catégorie des cabines de tourisme de 42 pieds, il n'y a plus d'écarts notables par rapport à cette norme.

En ce qui concerne l'aménagement général du salon central, toute la classe des 42 pieds se montre également majoritairement homogène. Les standards sont définis par une dînette et une table flexible, une grande cuisine et une table à cartes. Sur le Leopard 42, la cuisine-séjour est placée à l'avant, avec une vue presque illimitée dans le sens de la marche grâce aux immenses fenêtres de la superstructure. C'est très agréable, surtout en déplacement.

Contrairement aux bateaux de Fountaine Pajot ou de Lagoon, la cuisine du Léopard n'est donc pas directement liée, d'un point de vue fonctionnel, à la salle à manger du cockpit extérieur, où l'on passe généralement plus de temps qu'à l'intérieur du salon - un compromis. La navigation est également orientée vers l'avant, elle peut servir de poste de pilotage intérieur en cas de mauvais temps via la télécommande du pilote automatique. De là, on a effectivement une vue complète sur le bateau, vers l'avant et sur le côté, et même dans le gréement, y compris la grand-voile, par une longue fenêtre dans le toit de la cabine. Il n'est toutefois pas possible d'obtenir une commande moteur dans la navigation, même en option, auprès du chantier naval.

Sans appui sur la mer

Ce qui manque complètement dans le salon, ce sont des possibilités de s'accrocher sous forme de mains courantes, de poignées encastrées ou de rebords sur les meubles. Ceux qui naviguent avec le Leopard dans des conditions difficiles chercheront en vain un appui. En général, ce thème est souvent négligé sur les catamarans ; mais ici aussi, cela peut devenir assez inconfortable dans la houle.

En revanche, le Léopard marque des points grâce à une très bonne solution permettant d'abaisser la table du salon et de transformer la dînette en couchette double supplémentaire à l'aide de coussins. La table est ancrée de manière extrêmement solide et les coussins supplémentaires sont fournis par le chantier naval dans le volume standard. La grande surface de couchage convient également comme couchette de jour pour les longs passages en haute mer avec une bonne visibilité vers l'extérieur.

Leopard 42 perd de la place

Lorsque la coque est aménagée avec deux cabines, la couchette qui s'étend loin à l'avant devient très étroite. Pour des raisons esthétiques, le chantier naval a voulu faire de la surface de couchage un lit en îlot, ce qui fait perdre de la place sur les côtés. En effet, la couchette double ne fait que 1,12 mètre de large au niveau des épaules, ce qui est très étroit pour deux personnes adultes.

Chez les concurrents et sur le modèle précédent Leopard 40, les couchettes à l'avant sont plus larges et plus confortables pour une occupation double. En revanche, les lits à l'arrière, d'une largeur de près de 1,70 mètre, sont déjà nettement plus confortables pour dormir, même pour deux personnes. En ce qui concerne la ventilation, le Leopard 42 est un modèle du genre. Dans toutes les cabines sous le pont, dans les toilettes ainsi que dans le salon, plusieurs grandes ouvertures sont disponibles afin de pouvoir ventiler toutes les zones du bateau, même transversalement.

En ce qui concerne les installations techniques, le bateau sud-africain a également des atouts à faire valoir par rapport à la concurrence. Les composants des circuits d'eau, de l'électricité et des machines sont installés de manière impeccable, clairement identifiés et très facilement accessibles.

Il est compréhensible que Leopard Catamarans demande un peu plus d'argent pour sa construction soignée, ses structures solidement fabriquées et son accastillage de qualité sur le pont. Avec un prix de base de 629 510 euros, le Sud-Africain n'est toutefois que légèrement plus cher que les bateaux de la concurrence directe et comparable. Comme nous l'avons déjà mentionné, les acheteurs européens doivent toutefois prévoir un forfait de livraison élevé - s'ils ne transportent pas le bateau par leurs propres moyens.

Une alternative attrayante

Les bateaux Leopard doivent figurer sur la liste de ceux qui s'intéressent aux catamarans modernes et attrayants, que ce soit en tant que propriétaire ou en tant que loueur. Le Leopard 42 ne facilitera certainement pas la tâche de la concurrence, principalement française, mais se positionne comme une alternative attrayante. Le fait que le fauve du Cap de Bonne Espérance navigue bien est un plus bienvenu.

Qu’est-ce qu’un catamaran à voile ?

Un catamaran est un navire à voile doté de deux coques parallèles de même taille, par opposition à un monocoque qui n’en a qu’une. Les deux coques sont reliées par une plate-forme. Cette conception offre une grande stabilité sur l’eau, grâce à la largeur du bateau, et une résistance hydrodynamique réduite, ce qui les rend plus rapides.

Il existe les meilleurs catamarans à voile de toutes tailles – des petits navires avec de simples lits superposés et une petite cuisine aux grands catamarans luxueux avec une suite du propriétaire et des cabines d’invités.

Cela signifie que vous pouvez acheter des catamarans à partir de 10 000 $ seulement, jusqu’à 1 million de dollars. Notre petit et simple Heavenly Twins de 26 pieds, appelé Kittiwake, nous a coûté 12 000 dollars et nous l’avons réaménagé pour 9 000 dollars sur deux ans.

1) lagoon 42 sailing catamaran .

Caractéristiques : Foc auto-vireur, aménagement de 3 ou 4 cabines, lit îlot dans la cabine principale, 6 à 12 couchages, jusqu’à 4 salles d’eau, 2 moteurs 45cv, jusqu’à 4 salles d’eau, 300L de capacité d’eau, 300L de capacité de carburant.

Si vous privilégiez le confort à la vitesse, alors le Lagoon 42 est le meilleur catamaran à voile pour vous. Lagoon a recentré le poids, par rapport aux modèles précédents, dans le but de réduire le tangage.

Les lits en îlot dans les cabines attirent les croisiéristes d’autant plus qu’ils sont rares sur les bateaux. À bord, il y a beaucoup de place pour recevoir des invités ou pour accueillir une famille de croisiéristes.

2) Leopard 45 best sailing catamaran 

Déplacement : 14,5 tonnes Largeur : 24ft 2in Tirant d’eau : 4ft 11in

Caractéristiques : Cockpit orienté vers l’avant, 3 ou 4 cabines, 8 à 12 couchages, jusqu’à 4 salles de bain, jusqu’à 5 douches, 2 moteurs 45cv, capacité d’eau de 780L, capacité de carburant de 700L.

Le principal argument de vente unique de ce meilleur catamaran pour naviguer autour du monde est le cockpit orienté vers l’avant – un espace ombragé et bien ventilé pour se détendre et se rencontrer. Les couchettes ne comportent pas de lits en îlot, mais cela signifie qu’elles sont plus sûres pour dormir en mer – aucun risque de tomber dans une grosse mer.

Cette bête de catamaran à voile peut accueillir jusqu’à 12 personnes, ce qui en fait probablement un excellent bateau à louer. L’énorme capacité en eau et en carburant vous permettra d’être hors réseau pendant de longues périodes.

3) Fountaine Pajot Astréa 42 catamaran

Caractéristiques : 3 cabines, jusqu’à 3 salles d’eau, 2 moteurs 30cv, BBQ, plateforme de bain, couchettes en îlot, 8 à 10 couchages, capacité d’eau 700L, capacité de carburant 470L.

L’Astréa 42 est le dernier né de la gamme Fountaine Pajot, il se veut une évolution de l’Helia 44. Si vous êtes un amateur de design intérieur moderne et de confort luxueux, alors l’Astréa vous fera vous sentir comme chez vous.

L’intérieur de ces meilleurs catamarans à voile est tout simplement magnifique et l’habitabilité est excellente. La cuisine communique directement avec le cockpit, ce qui facilite le service des boissons et de la nourriture, et vous permet de discuter avec vos invités pendant que vous cuisinez.

Le barbecue, le grand cockpit et la plateforme de bain font de l’Astréa 42 un bateau où il fait bon passer du temps.

Bien que l’Astréa soit une maison flottante super confortable, il n’ira pas contre le vent et n’atteindra pas les vitesses impressionnantes des catamarans plus performants. Il faut avoir des priorités dans la vie, après tout.

4) Seawind 1600 catamaran 

Poids : 13 tonnes Largeur : 25ft 10in Tirant d’eau : De 8ft 6in à 2ft 1in, grâce aux dérives et aux gouvernails rétractables.

Caractéristiques : Voile d’avant auto-vireuse, 2 postes de pilotage, passerelle entre les trampolines, jusqu’à 4 cabines, 2 salles de bain, 5 à 8 couchettes, 2 moteurs 57cv, 600L d’eau, 750L de carburant.

L’achat du meilleur catamaran à voile est une décision importante – les modèles les plus récents ne sont pas bon marché, et une fois que vous en avez acheté un, il n’est pas toujours facile de le vendre. Avant d’appeler un courtier, examinons donc les avantages et les inconvénients des catamarans. Voici les principaux avantages.

• Pas de gîte.

Contrairement aux monocoques, les meilleurs catamarans ne gîtent pas, ce qui signifie que les coques restent à plat sur l’eau, quelle que soit la force ou la direction du vent. Cela permet de naviguer beaucoup plus confortablement sur l’océan et de mener une vie normale et droite, plutôt que d’effectuer vos tâches quotidiennes en biais.

• Pas de roulis.

Un autre grand avantage est que les catamarans à voile ne roulent pas – ils ne se déplacent pas d’un côté à l’autre dans la houle, ce qui est l’un des mouvements les plus ennuyeux et qui provoque le mal de mer typique des monocoques. Sur Kittiwake, nous avons souvent eu de la peine pour les gens sur les monocoques dont les mâts se balançaient comme des fous au-dessus de l’horizon dans la houle.

• Meilleur pour le mal de mer.

En principe, les meilleurs catamarans à voile sont meilleurs pour le mal de mer – la plate-forme plus stable et les mouvements plus doux de ces bateaux semblent causer moins de mal de mer. Cela dit, le mal de mer est subjectif et affecte les gens de différentes manières, donc avant de décider d’acheter un catamaran, allez naviguer sur des catamarans et des monocoques.

• Grands espaces de vie.

Si vous optez pour un catamaran de taille décente, l’espace de vie à bord vous semblera immense. L’espace entre les coques offre un salon et une cuisine de bonne taille, tandis que les couchettes dans les coques sont généralement assez grandes pour accueillir des lits doubles carrés – le rêve interdit des monocoques.

• L’intimité.

Les catamarans à voile plus récents ont souvent une coque entière dédiée aux cabines des invités. Cela signifie que vous aurez plus d’intimité à bord lorsque votre famille ou vos amis séjournent à bord. Vous serez séparés de quelques mètres pour dormir et vous pourrez utiliser des toilettes séparées.

• Tirant d’eau plus faible.

Les meilleurs catamarans pour naviguer autour du monde n’ont pas besoin d’une quille profonde ou d’un lest lourd pour s’équilibrer sur l’eau comme les monocoques. C’est pourquoi ils ont un faible tirant d’eau. Cela peut être un avantage dans les mouillages où un catamaran peut se rapprocher de la côte et être mieux protégé du vent et de la houle.

Dans certains lieux de croisière, comme les Bahamas, il y a beaucoup de mouillages peu profonds et de bancs de sable, ce qui fait qu’avoir un catamaran est un gros avantage. De plus, le faible tirant d’eau et la conception de la coque vous permettent d’échouer sur la plage d’un catamaran au cas où vous auriez besoin d’effectuer une maintenance d’urgence, comme une fuite du passe-coque.

• Deux moteurs.

La plupart des catamarans ont deux moteurs, ce qui signifie que si l’un d’eux tombe en panne, vous pouvez vous mettre en sécurité en utilisant l’autre. Si vous avez beaucoup fréquenté les bateaux, vous savez que les problèmes et les pannes de moteur diesel ne sont pas rares, c’est donc un avantage très pratique.

L’autre avantage étonnant des moteurs jumelés est qu’ils vous permettent de faire tourner le bateau à 360 degrés sur place, ce qui est très utile dans les marinas étroites. Vous ne trouverez pas de monocoque capable de faire cela.

• Difficile à couler.

Avec deux coques qui les maintiennent à flot, les meilleurs catamarans à voile sont très difficiles à couler. La flottabilité assurée par les deux coques permet de maintenir la majeure partie du bateau à flot en cas de chavirage. Et si une coque est percée, l’autre coque maintiendra probablement le bateau à la surface, bien que la tête en bas.

Les inconvénients d’un voilier catamaran

Les avantages peuvent donner l’impression qu’il s’agit d’une décision évidente, mais les catamarans présentent aussi des inconvénients. Examinons-les.

• Éclaboussures.

Même les meilleurs catamarans à voile éclaboussent dans une certaine mesure. Dans quelle mesure, cela dépend de la hauteur du pont. Les vieux catamarans qui sont assis bas sur l’eau, comme un vieux Prout ou Heavenly Twins, éclaboussent à chaque brise fraîche.

J’ai été choqué une fois de découvrir que Kittiwake pouvait éclabousser dans seulement 8 nœuds de vent au mouillage. Le bruit peut être très fatigant après un certain temps. Les catamarans supérieurs peuvent être très silencieux au mouillage, mais bruyants en mer dès que les vagues sont plus hautes que la hauteur de leur pont.

Vous entendrez le bruit dans tout le bateau, y compris dans les couchettes, où les vagues qui éclaboussent le pont ressembleront au bruit d’une bombe qui explose. Pas vraiment, mais presque !

• Moins de rétroaction.

Si le fait de ne pas gîter est très confortable, cela signifie également que le bateau offre moins de retour d’information. Lorsqu’un monocoque gîte, il est temps de choquer les écoutes ou de réduire les voiles. Et si l’indice vous échappe, la gîte permet au bateau d’évacuer le vent des voiles, ce qui rend la navigation sûre même par vent fort.

Sur un catamaran à voile, vous ne recevrez pas ce genre d’information et les voiles ne déverseront pas le vent. La roue elle-même donne généralement moins d’informations. Vous devrez être en alerte à tout moment, en vérifiant souvent la vitesse du vent, pour éviter que le bateau ne soit surpuissant par grand vent, ce qui pourrait potentiellement déchirer les voiles, endommager certains équipements ou provoquer un chavirage.

• Des coûts plus élevés.

Avec deux coques et deux moteurs, les catamarans sont généralement plus chers à entretenir. La largeur du bateau signifie également que la majorité des marinas et des chantiers navals facturent de 1,5 à 2 fois le montant qu’ils factureraient pour un monocoque de la même taille.

• La taille compte vraiment.

La taille fait une énorme différence avec les catamarans à voile. Certains catamarans plus petits n’offrent pas de hauteur sous plafond – Kittiwake avait une hauteur sous plafond de 1,5 m dans la plupart des endroits, par exemple. Les catamarans de taille moyenne (30-35 pieds) ont généralement des coques étroites, ce qui signifie que les couchettes sont petites et que les escaliers menant aux coques sont un peu exigus.

• L’incapacité de se redresser automatiquement en cas de chavirement.

Dans le cas rare d’un chavirage, les catamarans à voile restent renversés, ils ne peuvent pas se redresser. Un monocoque se redresserait automatiquement, ce qui vous permettrait de réparer les dégâts et de continuer à naviguer. Cependant, comme nous l’avons vu, les catamarans flotteront probablement même s’ils sont renversés, vous offrant une plate-forme solide sur laquelle attendre les secours.

• Sensibilité au poids.

La plupart des catamarans sont plutôt sensibles au poids, surtout ceux construits pour la vitesse. Avec moins de surface mouillée que les monocoques, ils ont tendance à s’enfoncer davantage sur leurs lignes de flottaison, ce qui détériore les performances de navigation.

Si vous avez l’habitude de manœuvrer des bateaux, vous savez que plus vous avez de vent, plus le bateau sera ballotté par le vent. Cela peut s’avérer gênant lorsque vous manœuvrez dans des espaces restreints ou par vent fort.

Comment se déroule une croisière sur un voilier catamaran ?

La croisière à voile sur un catamaran est très amusante et, bien sûr, très confortable. Le pont arrière est bien ombragé et protégé du vent, tout en étant spacieux. Le pont avant offre un endroit idéal pour se détendre – il suffit d’installer un parasol, de placer quelques coussins et de profiter de la brise.

Dans les mouillages houleux, vous serez reconnaissant d’être sur un catamaran lorsque les monos commenceront à rouler. Le bateau étant à plat sur l’eau, vous pouvez cuisiner et prendre une douche sans trop de problèmes, même en cours de route.

Ce que je préfère sur un catamaran, c’est regarder les dauphins jouer dans les trampolines.

Ce que je préfère absolument dans une croisière en catamaran ? Regarder les dauphins jouer avec les étraves à travers les trampolines (dans notre cas, la grille en bois). On peut s’approcher d’eux, c’est incroyable.

Comment choisir le meilleur catamaran à voile ?

Choisir le meilleur catamaran pour naviguer autour du monde n’est pas facile – votre décision doit être basée sur une variété de facteurs. Parmi ceux-ci, citons

– Le type de croisière que vous souhaitez faire – hauturière ou côtière. – Votre budget annuel d’entretien et d’amarrage – Le type de construction et la solidité de la coque et du pont. – la qualité de la construction – menuiserie, fenêtres, compartiment moteur et mécanisme de direction – Dispositifs de sécurité, tels que les bords incurvés et les guidons au-dessus et au-dessous du pont. – Performances à la voile – comment se comporte-t-il face au vent ? À quelle vitesse navigue-t-il ? – Le poids de l’équipement que vous voulez emmener avec vous – le bateau peut-il le supporter ? – La position de la barre et la visibilité depuis le fly deck. – Facilité de maniement des voiles – les voiles sont-elles faciles à lever, à régler et à prendre des ris ? – Hauteur sous plafond – Le nombre de cabines et de salles de bain dont vous avez besoin

D’autres facteurs vous seront plus personnels, tels que l’esthétique et la sensation du bateau, ainsi que les préférences que vous pouvez avoir en termes de caractéristiques spécifiques du bateau.

Questions et réponses sur les meilleurs catamarans à voile

Il y a tellement de choses à dire sur les catamarans qu’il est difficile de tout couvrir. Voici quelques-unes des questions les plus courantes sur la navigation en catamaran.

• Les catamarans sont-ils plus sûrs que les monocoques ?

Il existe de nombreux types de catamarans et de monocoques – certains sont adaptés à la croisière en mer, d’autres non. Certains sont construits de manière robuste, d’autres non. Cela signifie qu’il y a des catamarans de haute mer qui sont plus sûrs que les monocoques côtiers et vice-versa.

La vraie question est : qu’est-ce qui vous ferait vous sentir plus en sécurité ? La capacité à rester à flot même si la coque est trouée, ou la capacité à se redresser en cas de chavirage ? Vous seul connaissez la réponse.

• Les catamarans sont-ils plus rapides que les monocoques ?

Les catamarans de performance ont tendance à être plus rapides que les monocoques de même longueur. Cependant, les catamarans de croisière plus anciens atteignent souvent des vitesses similaires à celles des monocoques de la même taille.

• Les catamarans sont-ils plus faciles à naviguer ?

Cela dépend vraiment de leur conception. Se déplacer sur le pont est généralement plus facile. Cependant, le manque de feedback offert par un catamaran peut s’avérer difficile même pour un marin expérimenté. La manipulation des voiles peut être plus difficile (et dangereuse) sur les catamarans avec des fly bridges élevés, où la grand-voile est à plus de 8 m au-dessus du niveau de la mer.

• Les catamarans vous donnent-ils autant le mal de mer que les monocoques ?

La plupart des gens ont moins le mal de mer sur les catamarans, grâce à la réduction des mouvements du bateau. Cependant, dans une mer plus agitée, les catamarans peuvent rebondir beaucoup, générant un mouvement rapide et inconfortable. Le mal de mer étant subjectif, la meilleure façon de le découvrir est d’essayer à la fois un monocoque et un catamaran et de voir quel mouvement votre corps préfère.

• Peut-on emmener un catamaran en croisière autour du monde ?

Oui, si vous achetez un catamaran capable de naviguer en eaux bleues, vous pouvez faire le tour du monde avec.

• Les catamarans peuvent-ils remonter au vent ?

Certains catamarans modernes ont des gréements (le gréement en diamant) qui leur permettent de naviguer plus près du vent. Les concepteurs de bateaux ont relevé les défis posés par la largeur du bateau, même si la plupart des catamarans ne peuvent pas naviguer aussi près du vent que les monocoques. Les catamarans plus anciens, cependant, ont du mal à se frayer un chemin au vent.

• Peut-on hisser un catamaran n’importe où ?

Dans les régions moins développées, il peut être difficile de trouver un chantier naval qui dispose d’un ascenseur suffisamment large pour sortir un grand catamaran de l’eau. Vous devrez peut-être vous rendre dans une plus grande ville ou dans un pays disposant de meilleures installations pour les croisiéristes. Cependant, vous pouvez planifier votre entretien en fonction de cela et échouer le bateau en cas d’urgence (si c’est légal dans ce pays).

• Les catamarans sont-ils confortables par gros temps ?

Bien que les catamarans ne gîtent pas et ne roulent pas, le mouvement rapide du bateau par gros temps n’est pas très confortable. Certaines personnes préfèrent les monocoques, car le gîte tend à stabiliser le bateau d’une certaine manière.

• Prêt à délier les amarres et à acheter un catamaran de croisière ?

Les catamarans et les monocoques ont tous deux des avantages et des inconvénients, mais si vous recherchez avant tout l’espace, la stabilité et la vitesse, le catamaran est peut-être le bateau qu’il vous faut.

S’engager pour une industrie de plaisance plus durable

La  transition énergétique  et la sauvegarde de notre environnement sont aujourd’hui des enjeux majeurs dans l’ industries nautique , et sont également au cœur des préoccupations des propriétaires de bateaux de plaisance. Cela rentre aussi en résonnance avec la législation qui évolue de plus en plus rapidement dans ce sens et contraindra dans les décennies à venir les choix des industriels. En 2022, avec le lancement de son catamaran  Aura 51   Smart Electric ® – l’un des initiateurs de la  décarbonation  de l’industrie de plaisance – le groupe Fountaine Pajot a donc annoncé son ambition de promouvoir ce type de technologie pour une navigation plus respectueuse de l’ environnement .

Fountaine Pajot souhaite ainsi étendre la solution Smart Electric® à l’ensemble de la gamme Sailing Catamarans, ce qui marque une étape cruciale vers son objectif de proposer une gamme  100% électrique  d’ici à 2030 et d’accompagner chaque propriétaire vers l’ éco navigation .

La technologie Smart Electric s’étend progressivement au reste de la gamme

L’ Astréa 42  et l’ Elba 45  seront les deux prochains modèles à bénéficier de cette solution novatrice, après l’ Aura 51  en 2022. Fountaine Pajot souhaite ainsi continuer à développer sa vision d’entreprise grâce à cette technologie et cette nouvelle manière d’appréhender la navigation de plaisance. Sans apporter de contrainte aux propriétaires choisissant cette solution, la  technologie Smart Electric  reste non-invasive et permet de se jouer des éléments naturels pour  générer sa propre énergie à bord .

C’est l’endroit idéal, entre terre et mer, au cœur du plus grand salon nautique à flot de la Côte Atlantique, pour vous présenter ce catamaran de croisière alliant  éco-navigation  et  performance .

Aux solutions de mobilités.

En plus des diverses solutions de motorisation électrique que propose Fountaine Pajot, le groupe travaille également en parallèle sur d’autres thématiques. Le chantier diversifie notamment sa stratégie en s’appuyant sur 4 principaux axes :

1- Le premier concerne donc la propulsion, avec pour objectif en 2030 de remplacer à 100% les motorisations thermiques classiques par des solutions électrique.

2- Le second axe concerne les équipements embarqués de  production d’énergie , avec entre autre l’usage de larges surfaces de panneaux solaires, et le développement de pile à combustible utilisant l’hydrogène comme source d’énergie.

3- Le troisième axe s’intéresse à la production d’eau douce à bord, à l’aide de dessalinisateur embarqué couplé au système électrique décarboné, pour devenir  autonome .

4- Le quatrième axe s’articule autour de l’éco-conception des bateaux. Pour cela, Fountaine Pajot travaille en profondeur sur la recyclabilité des matériaux composites qui constituent la majeure partie des pièces structurelles des catamarans.

Les catamarans " Lagoon" sont réputés pour leur immense volume habitable, ils n’appartiennent pas pour rien à la division “floating real estate” de Bénéteau… 

Et, lors d’une croisière, cela se ressent.

Le Lagoon 46 a gagné en largeur , sur toute la longueur du bateau, et le produit de la largeur par la longueur, c’est de la surface habitable !

Avec ses 7.96 mètres de largeur, le Lagoon 46 est le plus large et le voilier plus habitable de ce comparatif. C’est celui qui dispose du flybridge le plus habitable , avec une bôme placée très haut qui permet de circuler là-haut sans s’en soucier.

Cette hauteur de bôme permet aussi le montage d’un bimini rigide (option) qui ombre l’ensemble du flybridge, c’est le seul des catamarans de ce comparatif à pouvoir en disposer. Un flybridge très accueillant avec banquettes et bain de soleil pour tout l’équipage.

L’espace entre la moitié avant des pointes est occupé par des trampolines, qui font le bonheur des enfants.

Un confort inégalé à bord !

À l'intérieur Lagoon réussit un tour de force dans les cabines . En général, dans les cabines avant on trouve un lit plaqué contre la coque des deux côtés. Les cabines arrières sont notablement plus volumineuses que celles de l'avant.

Pas sur le Lagoon 46 . Sur ce bateau, elles ont sensiblement la même surface , ce sont 40m2 de surface habitable dont on dispose dans les coques.

En option, une cabine skipper peut être aménagée dans une pointe avant .

La nacelle abrite la cuisine en U à bâbord , les réfrigérateurs, un carré en L à tribord dos à la route, la table à cartes à bâbord. Le poteau inox carré, plutôt réussi qui se trouve dans le carré n’est autre que l’ épontille de mât , ce dernier ayant été reculé .

Facile à naviguer !

Lagoon a voulu faire un voilier facile à manœuvrer seul , car il arrive souvent que le skipper soit le seul compétent sur le bateau. Pour cela, un foc auto-vireur a été choisi.

Pour optimiser sa surface et sa puissance, le mât du bateau a été reculé . Ainsi doté, le Lagoon 46 monte 123 m2 de toile au près.

Côté moteurs, ce sont deux Yanmar de 57 HP qui ont été choisis, des moteurs dont les hélices sont montées en arrière des safrans, comme sur tous les Lagoon.

Une plateforme Tenderlift peut être installée en option pour faciliter grandement la mise à l’eau de l’annexe.

En deux mots : " Le Lagoon 46 est le champion de sa catégorie pour son volume et son autonomie".

Le Lagoon 46 est le voilier le plus volumineux de ce comparatif . Un volume qui en fait aussi le voilier le plus lourd de l’étude, avec 16.6 tonnes. Mais son poids est justifié par ses équipements, avec 2x520 L d’eau douce et 2x300 L de gazole, des capacités qui le placent tout en haut du podium de l’autonomie. Facile à piloter avec son foc autovireur, le lagoon 46 bénéficie du plus vaste flybridge au prix de la bôme la plus haut placée du comparatif.

L'EXCESS 14, LA PERFORMANCE ET LES SENSATIONS DANS SON ADN !

La gamme Excess de Bénéteau regroupe des catamarans Open (sans flybridge) construits autour d’une approche plus simple de ce genre de bateaux.

Plus simple signifie aussi plus léger , et le poids réduit optimise les sensations.

Ajoutez à cela un fardage réduit, une bôme basse et un look résolument sportif et réussi, et c’est le programme Excess.

Là ou les Excess 12 et 15 partageaient leurs flotteurs avec des Lagoon, la donne a changé pour l’ Excess 14 qui est un voilier doté d’une carène spécifique , à coques asymétriques, comme sur les Hobbies Cat.

Ces carènes procurent au bateau un soupçon d’effet anti-dérive destiné à compenser l’absence de dérives que l’on retrouve sur les catamarans typés sport. Les catamarans les plus rapides et légers peuvent être piégeurs et les Excess sont pensés pour un large public .

L’Excess 14 n’est pas un catamaran de sport , mais un engin au look sportif pensé pour distiller des sensations à son barreur.

Avec un poids inférieur à 12 tonnes, l’Excess 14 est le plus léger des catamarans de notre comparatif. Il ne comporte pas de lourds aménagements sur sa casquette et se barre de l’arrière des coques, à la manière des catamarans Open.

Côté barre , là où les gros catamarans actionnent leurs safrans hydrauliquement ou via des câbles métalliques et plusieurs renvois, les catamarans "Excess" fonctionnent avec des drosses de barre textile , des drosses le trajet a été pensé le plus direct possible pour affiner les sensations de barre…

Pour bronzer, on peut installer, à l’escale uniquement, des coussins de bain  de soleil sur la casquette, ces mêmes coussins sont utilisables également à l’avant.

Le gréement standard monte 118 m2 et la version Pulse embarque 134 m2, ce qui place le bateau au niveau du rapport poids/puissance des catamarans de grand voyage .

Doté de ce gréement, le bateau s’anime à la voile des 6 à 7 nœuds de vent .

L'Excess 14, un catamaran moderne et confortable !

Quand on regarde un Excess 14 depuis le quai, son look sportif est si réussi qu’on s’attend à visiter un bateau dépouillé, blanc, et démuni de confort. 

Mais ce n’est pas cela du tout à bord de l’Excess 14 dont le rapport entre l’aspect extérieur sportif et l’intérieur cossu n’est pas sans rappeler ce même rapport sur des berlines allemandes. 

C’est un intérieur moderne traité dans un style que l’on pourrait qualifier de scandinave , plutôt clair, qui ne verse pas dans l’ostentation (trois choix de sellerie). On est à bord d’un voilier et pas d’un appartement flottant.

Le style n’est pas absent pour autant, tout en détail comme les garcettes qui servent de poignée de tiroir , un travail sur les textiles qui se prolonge à l’extérieur sur les filières textiles ainsi que sur les drisses, écoutes et bosses de ris assorties mais visuellement légèrement différents.

En bref, l'Excess 14 c'est : " Le sportif confortable de notre comparatif"

L’Excess 14 est un catamaran au look sportif qui ne sacrifie rien au confort . Léger et peu avare en sensations, c’est le catamaran le plus vif à la voile de notre comparatif. C’est aussi le seul bateau de ce comparatif qui ne comporte pas de flybridge, celui proposant la surface habitable la moins important.

LE BALI 4.4, INNOVATION ET CONFORT AU RENDEZ-VOUS !

Les Bali , fabriqués par Catana, tirent leur succès de la porte basculante qui ouvre et ferme le cockpit au gré des envies, de leur cockpit avant accessible depuis le carré ainsi que de leur arrière entièrement ponté .

Très habitables, leur principal désavantage tenait dans la hauteur de la bôme.

Tenait, car ce n’est plus le cas sur le Bali 4.4.

Difficile de ne pas apprécier la polyvalence apportée par la vaste porte oscillo-basculants montée sur le Bali 4.4.

Elle confère deux visages à ce beau catamaran . Fermée, vous disposez d’un grand espace isolé du vent et éventuellement chauffé, un espace qui englobe la table.

Ouvert, v ous profitez d’un espace décloisonné où l'air circule dans effort.

Polyvalence aussi, le cockpit avant auquel on accède par une porte (étanche) depuis la nacelle. Là où les compétiteurs de Bali installent des matelas ou quelques assises, Bali installe un vrai carré (table en option), un espace parfait pour prendre le petit déjeuner, comme un balcon sur la mer .

Un flybridge malin et confortable !

Le flybridge est spacieux et peut accueillir tout l’équipage mais sur ce 4.4 et comme sur le 4.6, la bôme redescend à une altitude facilitant sa manipulation depuis le flybridge. Pour réussir ce tour de force, l e chantier a installé les jambes du skipper dans un décaissement . C’est efficace et malin.

A l’intérieur, la grande cuisine en L (bâbord) comporte toujours son réfrigérateur américain XXL et à l’avant, à tribord, on trouve une table à carte.

La table est munie de banquettes d'un côté et de chaises de l’autre . Un canapé installé en regard de la table à tribord complète l'ameublement.

Le Bali 4.4, un catamaran facile et confortable :

Les générations précédentes des Bali ont connu un grand succès tenant aux trois points d’aménagement cités dans le paragraphe précédent.

Une critique, légère, revenait souvent our accéder à leur bôme, il fallait monter sur le bimini du flybridge (5 mètres de hauteur sur l’eau). Pas toujours facile de monter là haut quand il y a des vagues ou beaucoup de vent. Catana a revu cet aménagement et a abaissé la bôme de ce 4.4 .

La bôme ne vient pas frôler le bimini, comme sur l’Excess 14 ni se déplacer 1 mètre au-dessus comme sur l’Elba 45 mais cette configuration facilite sa manipulation tout comme elle augmente la surface de la grand-voile.

Doté de 116m2 de surface de toile au près , ce bateau accuse les 13.8 tonnes sur la bascule, soit près de deux tonnes de moins que le Lagoon 46. Sur ce critère, il se situe à mi-chemin entre le Lagoon 46 et l’Excess 14. Quand la brise vient à manquer, le Bali 4.4 marche sur deux moteurs de 57 HP, dont les hélices sont montées en arrière des safrans, ainsi que de la plus importante capacité de gazole (800 L) de ce comparatif. Une capacité identique à celle de l’eau douce.

A propos d’autonomie, le Bali 4.4 est également muni d’un système de traitement des eaux usées et de potabilisation de l’eau des réservoirs , assez uniques sur ce type de bateaux.

Le Bali 4.4 dispose de toutes les caractéristiques qui ont fait le succès de cette marque, auxquelles s’ajoute le positionnement rabaissé de la bôme qui facilite grandement les opérations. Un bateau dont le dynamisme à la voile le situe entre le Lagoon 46 et l’Elba 45.

L'ELBA 45, UN CATAMARAN À L'ESPRIT MARIN !

Fountaine-Pajot est à l’origine des catamarans de croisière , tels qu’on les connaît aujourd’hui.

Le chantier Rochelais n’a jamais oublié ses racines marines et la navigation à la voile fait partie intégrante du programme de l’Elba 45. 

l'elba 45, un bon compromis ?

Doté du flybridge et des cabines probablement les plus spacieux de sa catégorie, l’Elba 45 n’est pas juste un voilier volumineux. Accusant 1800 kg de moins que le Lagoon 46, il est également doté d'une surface de voile (124 m 2) supérieure à ce dernier ainsi qu’au Bali 4.4. Une surface de voile même supérieure à celle de l’Excess 14. 

Le plan de voilure comporte une grand-voile à trois bandes de ris et un génois à recouvrement, plus efficace et puissant qu’un foc autovireur.

Toilé, il dispose aussi d’une bôme franchement accessible , une caractéristique rassurante quand on navigue à la voile. Destiné au voyage , son architecte à dessiné des quillons rapportés, collés dans une réservation de la coque.

Ce détail prend toute son importance en cas de talonnage, le quillon jouant alors le rôle de fusible mécanique.

L'Elba 45, un catamaran élégant et spacieux,

Les cabines sont très réussies , avec une luminosité omniprésente et un assortiment de coloris à la fois chaleureux et élégant.

Proposé dans une version 3 cabines et trois salles d’eau ou quatre cabines et autant de salles d’eau, la version la plus adaptée à nos opérations est la version "Quatuor", une cabine de ponte avant peut alors être équipée en option.

Le flybridge est accessible depuis les deux côtés du bateau et une plateforme hydraulique Tenderlift peut être installée pour faciliter la mise à l’eau de l’annexe.

En conclusion, le catamaran "Elba 45" est un combiné réussi entre performance, élégance et confort.

D’un poids très proche de celui du Bali 4.4 (14  tonnes), l’Elba 45 est doté d’une surface de voile plus importante , caractéristique lui conférant des performances légèrement supérieures sous voiles. Le catamaran est-il réellement le meilleur bateau pour un tour du monde ou une transat ?

Choisir de naviguer en catamaran, c’est choisir une certaine philosophie de la croisière et de la navigation. Mais ce multicoque est-il le meilleur choix pour la navigation hauturière? Nous allons essayer de répondre à la question et voir comment bien préparer son achat de catamaran.

Le marché du multicoque, et notamment du catamaran, est en pleine progression. L’engouement des plaisanciers, quel que soit leur programme, ne faiblit pas. A tel point que des chantiers proposent de nouvelles gammes. Aux côtés des Fountaine-Pajot et Outremer, le chantier Catana propose une nouvelle gamme, avec les Bali et Bénéteau se lance dans la construction de catamarans sportifs.

Sur le marché de l’occasion, l’attrait pour les bateaux à deux coques est le même. Les candidats au grand voyage optent majoritairement pour le catamaran et en côtier, les Maldives 32 et autres Lagoon 380 restent très bien côtés. Alors pourquoi cet intérêt pour le catamaran et comment bien choisir son futur multicoque ?

Pourquoi naviguer en catamaran ?

Un plaisancier qui souhaite acheter, ou louer, un bateau passera par une réflexion sur le type de voilier qu’il va choisir. Choisir entre un monocoque, un catamaran ou trimaran , c’est choisir entre des philosophies différentes, des plaisirs différents et donc des navigations et escales différentes. Le catamaran à deux gros avantages, le volume et la stabilité . Opter pour un catamaran, c’est faire le choix du confort en mer et en escale. En effet, le catamaran a le gros avantage d’être stable en mer. Il ne gite pas.

Si les sensations sont, en général, moins grisantes, que sur un monocoque (ce qui n’est pas toujours le cas, il suffit de voir quelques modèles comme le catamaran TS3) le confort en mer est tout simplement extraordinaire. Vous naviguez sans gites, sans ressentir les rafales de vent.

Au mouillage, le catamaran apporte, là aussi, de nombreux avantages. Dans un catamaran de 12 mètres, vous aurez un magnifique carré avec vue sur mer et 4 vastes cabines. Le volume à l’extérieur est vaste et vous pouvez même choisir entre deux, voire trois zones pour bronzer au soleil.

Quel type de catamaran choisir pour un tour du monde ?

Il existe de nombreux constructeurs de catamarans. Certains vont s’orienter vers la grande série, pour la location et la croisière à la semaine. Ce sera le cas des catamarans Lagoon, Bavaria catamaran ou encore Fountaine Pajot . Ces derniers proposent des bateaux confortables et bien pensés pour la croisière en famille . Les espaces bains de soleil sont importants, ils peuvent proposer une plate-forme, au-dessus du roof avec un poste de pilotage en hauteur. Les unités les plus modernes proposent même une plage avant aménagée, avec un passage via le carré, comme sur la gamme Bali .

D’autres chantiers proposeront des catamarans pour le long voyage .  On retrouve des chantiers qui ont fait rêver nombre de baroudeurs. Le chantier Outremer a permis à de nombreuses familles, de découvrir le monde. Les catamarans Outremer ont toujours proposer de bateaux offrant un très bon compromis entre qualité nautiques et confort en mer et en escale. Enfin, certains constructeurs se spécialisent sur les catamarans de croisière rapide, voire voiliers de course–croisière. Ils sont en général plus léger, équipés de dérives et conserve un filet, à l’avant en lieu et place d’une plateforme rigide. On retrouve, ici, à côté des c élèbres Catana , de nombreuses petites séries. Les catamarans les plus réputés sont surement les plans Lerouge . Cet architecte navale est une référence en dessin de catamaran rapide. Plus récemment, c’est le chantier Marsaudon , de Lorient, qui fait parler de lui avec de catamarans de course-croisière ou tout est pensé pour aller vite.

Le guide d’achat du catamaran d’occasion

Un bateau doit correspondre à un programme et un budget. Pour certains, le bateau d’occasion a de nombreux avantages. Ils sont éprouvés, bien équipés et les propriétaires ont apporté de nombreuses améliorations.

Mais acheter un catamaran d’occasion, c’est aussi une question de budget. Concernant le budget, faites attention, le coût d’un bateau ne s’arrête au prix d’achat, il peut y avoir des surprises après coup. Un guide d’achat du bateau d’occasion a déjà été publié. N’hésitez pas à vous faire accompagner d’un professionnel (chantier ou yachtbroker). Vous allez éventuellement investir une somme à 5 ou 6 chiffres…

Concernant la taille du catamaran, ne voyez pas trop gros. Visitez plusieurs modèles différents. Si un catamaran de moins de 10 mètres n’apporte pas beaucoup plus de volume qu’un monocoque, un bateau de 15 mètres devient vite une machine qu’il faudra contrôler à coup de winchs électriques et de courses sur le pont. En équipage réduit, cela devient vite compliqué. Certains modèles de voyage sont très lourds à mener et une prise au vent importante.

Concernant l’aménagement extérieur, réfléchissez bien à votre navigation. Certains modèles ont un cockpit de faible surface, avec une barre à roue assez haute et peu de visibilité. Le but étant de maximiser l’espace intérieur. Au contraire, d’autres modèles vont être pensés pour faciliter les manœuvres et offrir une vue dégagée.

A l’intérieur, pensez là aussi à ce que vous voulez. Dans la grande majorité des cas, les cabines seront dans les coques. Sauf les bateaux anglo-saxons qui pouvaient en placer sur la plate-forme centrale. Le plus important est la lumière dans les cabines et la largeur des coursives. Le carré, lui, doit avoir une vue sur mer. C’est un espace de vie. Il doit être lumineux et aéré. Dans le même temps ; il doit se situer au même niveau que la cuisine et la table à carte. Cette configuration permet d’avoir un espace de vivre ensemble.

Quels sont les points à surveiller sur un catamaran?

Un catamaran demande sans doute plus de vigilance qu’un monocoque , avant l’achat. En effet, la structure n’est pas la même, certains postes sont multipliés par deux. Bien évidemment, contrôlez le gréement, les voiles et l’accastillage. Le contrôle des moteurs et des presse-étoupes est lui aussi important. Dans tous les cas, vérifiez :

• La Structure du bateau
• Les jonctions des poutres
• Les éventuelles dérives sabre
• L’étanchéité des hublots
• Le poste de barre et de direction
• L’électricité et l’électronique

Quel catamaran de 40 pieds pour voyager ?

Pendant longtemps, le bateau de voyage le plus utilisé – en multicoque tout du moins – était le catamaran de plus ou moins 40 pieds. Le plus emblématique de ces bateaux de voyage étant le Prout Snowgoose. On trouvait aussi sur les mouillages autour du monde les Outremer (38 et 40), le fameux Edel Cat 35, les Louisiane, Fidji et Athena du chantier Fountaine Pajot, les Lagoon 37 puis 380, les Catana (381 – 39 – 40), les Privilège 12 et 37, mais aussi les Kennex 380, Azuli et autres Escale 39… Des bateaux aussi différents que possible, tous nés avant l'an 2000, mais tous capables d'emmener – et surtout de ramener – leurs équipages, pour la plupart familiaux, autour du monde. Aujourd'hui, le créneau des 40 pieds est principalement occupé par les grands chantiers, qui proposent tous un bateau qui est souvent l'entrée de gamme dans le monde du multi. Ces catamarans sont bien sûr confortables, offrent 3 ou 4 cabines doubles, 2 salles d'eau et des volumes qui feraient rêver les navigateurs des années 90. Quant aux performances, elles restent tout à fait convaincantes dans le cadre d'une navigation en famille ou en couple, avec des bateaux, qui plus est, capables d'emmener une charge utile plus qu'intéressante en voyage, et le tout pour un budget raisonnable. Embarquons donc à bord des Bali 4.0, Broadblue Rapier 400, Lagoon 40, Leopard 40, Lucia 40, Nautitech Open 40 et Seawind 1190…

Des carènes pour tous les goûts

Dans cette famille des 40 pieds capables de vous emmener en voyage, on ne trouve que des catamarans, et aucun trimaran. Mais ces catamarans ont des spécificités de carènes bien différentes les unes des autres. On trouve deux écoles : la première consiste à proposer la surface mouillée le plus modeste possible pour offrir de belles performances avant tout, quitte à n'offrir qu'une capacité de charge plus limitée. Le Broadblue Rapier 400 et le Seawind 1190 Sport sont clairement dans cette famille.

Les Lagoon et Leopard assument de leur côté leurs carènes larges à la flottaison pour un volume maximum, et surtout une importante capacité de charge (en gros 20 % du déplacement), pratiquement 50 % supérieure à celles des deux premiers. Les Lucia, Nautitech Open 40 et Bali 4.0 sont clairement à ranger dans la seconde famille – comme les Leopard et Lagoon. Ils offrent du volume et de la capacité de charge, mais restent dans un poids contenu pour offrir le meilleur compromis possible entre performance et charge… Nous verrons plus loin ce qu'il en est réellement sur l'eau…

Du côté des appendices, on fait dans le classique avec des ailerons fixes pour (presque) tout le monde et des tirants d'eau allant de 1,12 m à 1,35 m. Seul le Seawind justifie son appellation "Sport" avec le choix de dérives portant son tirant à 2,10 m au maximum (et 0,60 m dérives relevées).

I bought a yacht that I had never seen. I did this because I trusted my broker Andrew Holland. It was not an easy job for Andrew, as I am an experienced boat builder and owner of previous yachts, but work in West Africa. Imagine how hard it was to communicate what I was looking for. Andrew came up with exactly what I wanted. He dealt with time delays, all my questions at odd hours, and was there for the survey. He reported honestly and professionally. After buying the yacht, I arrived at the boat on a Sunday night, after dark, after travelling from West Africa to the Caribbean, and found it was better than expected. He never pulled punches and made me aware of shortfalls. I expected to spend my one month leave working on the boat, but actually spent less than one week, and was able to spend 3 weeks sailing – wonderful bonus.
