Passengers of villa vie residences' odyssey were set to begin a three and a half year world cruise in may, however due to issues with the ship, they've been in northern ireland for three months..
These travelers are living out their very own Gilligan's Island storyline.
Passengers of the Villa Vie Residences' Odyssey cruise ship were ready to set sail on a three and a half year voyage around the world in May, however due to issues with the ship, they have been living in Belfast, Northern Ireland, for the past three months.
The world cruise offered travelers a chance to buy a cabin—billed as a "villa"—and live at sea for the duration of the journey, visiting 425 ports in 147 countries on seven continents. The cabins started at $119,999, plus a fixed monthly fee, according to the cruise website . Passengers also had the opportunity to sign up for shorter journeys, lasting either a few months or a year.
However the ship, which was originally built in 1993 but went offline in 2020, has been having issues with its rudder and gearbox, which has caused the three month delay. The Odyssey is currently undergoing maintenance at Belfast's Harland & Wolff shipyard, which is where the Titanic was built over a 100 years ago.
But Villa Vie Residences' marketing manager Sebastian Stokkendal told the Associated Press the company is hopeful the cruise will be underway in the coming weeks after fixes to the rudder shafts, steel work and an engine overhaul.
Stokkendal further noted the company has been "humbled by the scale of what it takes to reactivate a 30-year-old vessel from a four-year layup."
"We expect a very anticipated successful launch next week," he continued, "where we will head to Bremerhaven, Amsterdam, Lisbon, then across the Atlantic for our Caribbean segment."
Until the ship is ready to set sail, the company has been paying the living expenses for about 200 passengers who are currently in Belfast, and has even paid for hotels in other European cities for those looking to explore more of the continent while they wait for the cruise to begin.
Florida resident Holly Hennessey and her cat Captain are two of those passengers currently living in the Northern Irish capital, and as Holly explained, the travelers have been allowed back on the ship during the daytime.
"We can spend all day aboard the ship, and they provide shuttle buses to get on and off," she told the BBC . "We can have all of our meals and they even have movies and trivia entertainment, almost like cruising except we're at the dock."
“When you’re the first at doing something, you will run into hiccups,” said the CEO of the cruise company, in quite the understatement.
Deputy Executive Editor
The Villa Vie Residences’ ship Odyssey was supposed to embark on the first voyage in a three-year-long round-the-world cruise on May 30, but has instead been stuck in rainy Belfast for the past three months while its crew attempt to resolve mechanical problems.
The cruise company has been “humbled by the scale of what it takes to reactivate a 30-year-old vessel from a four-year layup,” Villa Rie Residences marketing manager Sebastian Stokkendal said in a statement provided to the Associated Press .
While work continues to shore up the vessel, onboard activities and meals are offered during the day, but passengers in the Odyssey’s 509 cabins are required to disembark every evening, and are shuttled to local hotels.
Those who paid six figures for the experience (many intending to live onboard full-time for the ship’s expected 15-year-old lifespan, at least when they are actually able to set sail) have been gamely keeping themselves busy in the meanwhile. Self-proclaimed “cruise addict” Holly Hennessey has been taking in the Irish sights—on repeat: “I’ve been to Giant’s Causeway twice,” she told The Daily Mail , “but the best part of the trip was the stop at Bushmills,” referring to the Irish whiskey distillery.
Hennessey, who was also interviewed by the BBC , is traveling with her cat, “Captain the Cruising Kitty.” She did not share how Captain has been coping with the delays, but we all know cats feel strongly about schedules.
Besides frequenting the city’s many pubs and making friends with locals, others have used the downtime to visit nearby and not so nearby destinations, from Greenland to the Canary Islands—some of these trips are being organized by the cruise company. One passenger has even found time to make it back home to Australia (twice) during the wait.
Villa Vie Residences CEO Mikael Petterson told the BBC he anticipates the Odyssey—its name becoming more ironic by the day—will set sail soon. “When you’re the first at doing something, you will run into hiccups,” he said. “But we're definitely getting there, and although we are late, we will launch.”
(Petterson previously served as managing director for Life at Sea, a cruise line which last year canceled its plans for a similar multi-year circumnavigation.)

The Villa Vie Odyssey is now three months past its original launch date.
Passengers planning to travel the world on a three-year cruise are speaking out as they remain stuck on land, waiting for their ship to depart.
Holly Hennessy said she has been stuck in Belfast, Ireland, for three months as she and her fellow passengers wait for the cruise ship, the Villa Vie Odyssey, to be repaired.
"It's cold. It's windy. It's damp. It usually rains," Hennessy told " Good Morning America ," describing the past three months in Belfast. "I've been moved five times to different accommodations."
Johan Bodin and his partner Lanette Canen have spent the past three months traveling around Europe as they wait for the ship to depart from Belfast. The couple relocated from Maui, Hawaii, to spend the next several years on the Villa Vie Odyssey, according to their website, where they post travel content.
"We intend to stay on for a long haul, but who knows how we feel after a year," Bodin told "GMA."
Bodin and other passengers on the Villa Vie Odyssey, operated by Villa Vie Residences, have been waiting since May for the cruise to depart.
Mikael Petterson, the founder and CEO of Villa Vie Residences, told "GMA" the Villa Vie Odyssey is a 30-year-old ship. He said the ship made the trip to Belfast on its own power before other maintenance issues were discovered.
"The rudder stocks took six weeks to get done, and now we're dealing with a couple of other things," Petterson said. "But overall, I think three months is actually not that bad given the circumstances."
Petterson added that the ship's repairs are in their final stages, and said he expects the ship to depart the week of Sept. 9.
The cruise is advertised to visit 475 destinations in 147 countries. The price to purchase an all-inclusive cabin starts at around $100,000, with an additional monthly fee for at least 15 years.
While the Villa Vie Odyssey has been out of commission, passengers are allowed on the ship during the day but cannot stay overnight, staying in hotel rooms in Belfast instead.
For passengers who are using the time to travel, Villa Vie Residences has helped them plan trips.
Canen said she and Bodin are optimistic that after months of delays, they will sail out of Belfast soon.
"Hopefully by next weekend, we'll be floating away, saying goodbye to Belfast," Canen said.

Passengers waiting to take a journey around the world are having to delay their adventure because the ship has been stuck in Northern Ireland for three months.
Villa Vie Residences' Odyssey was going to leave Belfast, Northern Ireland, but is undergoing repairs that have postponed its scheduled May departure for a 3 ½-year-round-the-world voyage.
The cruise ship offers travelers an opportunity to purchase a cabin and live at sea while visiting 425 ports in 147 countries on seven continents.
According to the Associated Press, cabins characterized as "villas" begin at $99,999, plus a monthly cost for the operations of the ship. Passengers have the option to sign up for portions of the voyage, which can last weeks or months.
Several passengers have used the time to enjoy other trips while they await the cruise ship to eventually depart.
Lanette Canen and Johan Bodin told the Associated Press they have enjoyed their stop in Belfast, enjoying the food and culture. They have also traveled to Italy, Croatia, and Sweden.
Angela and Stephen Theriac told the BBC they used the time to travel around Spain by train, visiting Greenland, and taking weekend trips to England.
Holly Hennessey, a passenger and Florida native, told the BBC she can’t leave Northern Ireland because of her shipmate – her cat, Captain.
Dr. David Austin, who sold his Georgia home to set sail on the cruise, told the New York Post he stopped counting down the days until the cruise ship is finally ready.
Moreover, Villa Vie Residences’ have been covering the living expenses for about 200 passengers, and they are allowed on the ship during the day and given meals and entertainment but cannot stay overnight.
The AP reported that the company has paid for hotels in Belfast and other European cities for passengers who want to enjoy more of Europe while they wait.
