Motor Yacht

Motor yacht Eclipse, completed at the end of 2010 at the Blohm + Voss Hamburg shipyard, features interiors by Terence Disdale Design and is the world’s second largest superyacht.

At  her launch in 2010 the 164m Eclipse’s unprecedented size had ensured her construction had been shrouded in secrecy, and as such, subject to much rumour and speculation from both the international press and superyacht enthusiasts.

Although details of the luxury megayacht are being extremely well hidden, it is known that her interiors feature designs by the renowned London-based team at Terence Disdale Design.

Russian Billionaire Roman Abramovich is the owner of this giant yacht which is believed to accommodate 36 guests in 18 cabins and also cater for a staggering 70 crew members.

Amongst the armada of lavish extras thought to be onboard are a three-man leisure submarine, two swimming pools, one of which is 16-metres long with an adjustable depth feature that allows it to be converted into a dance floor. Other extras include an exterior fireplace and six tenders as well as accommodation for three helicopters.

ECLIPSE Yacht – Epic $600M Superyacht

The ECLIPSE yacht was once the largest yacht in the world at an impressive length of 162.5 metres (533 ft) but currently ranks in second place after AZZAM.

Though she is known as the billion-dollar yacht, it is estimated that her true value lies between US $500 – $700 million.

The vessel can host 36 guests and is even rumored to feature a state-of-the-art anti-paparazzi system to protect the privacy of those on board.

ECLIPSE yacht interior

The interior (and the exterior) was designed by Terence Disdale , who has become one of the top names in the industry despite having no formal design education.

ECLIPSE was his largest project to date, and he also worked on prominent vessels such as A+ and AL SALAMAH. The interior of ECLIPSE is classically designed in a style that is to be expected from one of the largest yachts in the world.

The upholstery and furniture follow a beige and crème color palette with wooden accents.

The yacht’s 18 cabins can welcome 36 guests as well as 70 crew members, which is an unusually large number even for a vessel of this size.

A large dance floor, several fireplaces, two swimming pools, and two helipads are also included onboard.

The ECLIPSE yacht interior is so large that there is even a cinema dedicated exclusively to crew members. In 2015 the interior of ECLIPSE was refitted by Blohm and Voss in Hamburg.

Specifications

The ECLIPSE yacht is the second-largest yacht in the world with a length of 162.5 meters (533 ft), a beam of 22 meters (72.2 ft), and a draft of 5.9 meters (19.4 ft).

She was built by the German shipyard Blohm & Voss and delivered to her owner in 2010.

Four MTU engines power ECLIPSE and allow her to reach top speeds of 25 knots, although her average cruising speed lies at 22 knots.

Her total volume lies at 13564 tons making her not only one of the longest but also the heaviest yachts in the world.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is Eclipse-yacht-FV1-1024x1024.jpg

Like the interior of ECLIPSE, the interior was designed by Terence Disdale. According to rumors, Abramovich fitted her with an anti-paparazzi system that detects electronic light sensors from digital cameras.

However, there is no proof of this, although many newspapers report its existence.

On deck are several swimming pools and jacuzzis, and the aft of the vessel features a sizeable beach club. The yacht has a sleek design that attests to Terence Disdale’s classical style.

Eclipse tender FV

ECLIPSE came to fame as being the most expensive yacht ever built at the time for an approximate price of US $500 million.

She has seen further improvements since her purchase by Abramovich in 2010 and it is often widely reported that she is worth US $1.2 – $1.5 billion.

Cast your vote in the inaugural World Cup of Superyachts

Eclipse crowned the winner of the first World Cup of Superyachts

After a gruelling week of competition and over 47,000 votes cast, the 162 metre Blohm+Voss superyacht Eclipse has been crowned the winner of the inaugural World Cup of Superyachts.

The competition began with 16 of the greatest yachts drawn from a hat and the number was swiftly whittled down to a face-off in the grand final between Eclipse and Octopus - two of the most impressive yachts ever built.

  • Step on board the 162.5m Eclipse - the second largest superyacht in the world

At 162 metres in length, Eclipse had size on her side as one of the largest yachts in the world (second only to Azzam who she knocked out in the semi-finals). With nine decks and the design talents of the legendary Terence Disdale touching every curve and corner, she is a truly remarkable vessel. But what Octopus may lack in size at a comparably modest 126 metres, she more than makes up for in her pandora's box of toys, from the two helicopters sitting side by side in the hangar to the 10-person Pagoo submarine (not to mention her globetrotting 12,500 nautical mile range.)

The competition was tough and the battle well fought, but it was Eclipse that came out on top after a week of voting across social media and boatinternational.com.

You can listen to the draw as it happened on our BOAT Briefing podcast .

Eclipse – The World’s Most Expensive Private Yacht

Eclipse mega yacht

In the world of soccer, Roman Abramovich is a popular figure as he owns the leading English club, Chelsea. The Russian businessman helped the Blues become a big spender in the transfer market, bringing brilliant players like Arjen Robben, Didier Drogba, Fernando Torres, etc. to offer the beautiful game to club supporters across the world.

In addition to the Chelsea football team, which is a beauty on soccer fields, Abramovich owns another marvel: a private yacht named Eclipse.

The 162.5m-long beauty Eclipse is the world’s second-largest and one of the most expensive superyachts. Its estimated cost is 590 million (€340 million), and its current owner has owned it since December 2010.

A synonym for luxury, this superyacht is best suited for all adventure and water sports activities and provides splendid trips to cultural and historical destinations.

Built by renowned German shipbuilder Blohm + Voss, the Eclipse was launched in June 2009 after five years of design, development, and testing. Before its final delivery, several sea trials were conducted starting in May 2009 at Kristiansand, Norway.

When delivered, Eclipse won the spot for the largest superyacht in the world, beating the 162m-long M/Y Dubai of Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates. Eclipse retained the title until the arrival of the 180m-long Azzam, UAE President Khalifa bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan’s private yacht in 2013. Currently managed by Blue Ocean Yacht Management, Eclipse was selected as the Motor Yacht of the Year in 2011 at the World Superyacht Awards.

Specifications of Eclipse Yacht

As mentioned earlier, this tremendous superyacht measures 162.5m (533’1″ft) in length, 22.00m (72’2″ft) in width and 5.90m (19’4″ft) in the draft, offering a vast area for luxurious leisure activities. The Bermuda-flagged Lloyds Register class yacht has a Gross Tonnage of 13000 tonnes.

Eclipse is powered by a diesel-electric, dual propulsion system with four MTU 20V 1163 TB93 marine diesel engines, offering the latest propulsion technology for maximum speed performance. These engines power the rotating Azipod drives, giving the yacht a maximum speed of 25 knots and a cruise speed of 22. Featuring 1,000,000 litres of fuel tanks, Eclipse can travel up to 6,000 nautical miles at 21 knots before refuelling. The boat also can store about 150,000 litres of freshwater abroad.

Interior and Exterior Design

While Blohm + Voss provided the naval architecture, Terence Disdale Design carried out the superstructure design of the Eclipse. The UK-based award-winning firm was also responsible for interior design, deck layouts, and construction supervision.

Incidentally, the vessel’s construction was performed with great secrecy, and due to this reason, the project was named Project Luxury Yacht M 147 throughout the construction period. However, the details of the technical design and construction of the yacht have not been revealed to the public; the design and layout are available for people to marvel at.

Divided into nine decks, the top deck of Eclipse is taken up by the helicopters and garage. The swimming pool and sundeck go on level eight, while level seven features a pool, atrium and an open deck. The salon, main dining hall and a 40ft X 60ft full-beam loggia are located on the sixth level, and the fourth floor features the main entrance of the yacht. While the next level of the yacht divides the cabins and suites of the owner, guests and crew, the second deck of the vessel acts as a docking port for the submarine. Level one accommodates the engine room, machinery, and a small disco club.

The superyacht with a displacement steel hull has an aluminium superstructure, while its decks become magnificent, featuring teak woods. To offer a smooth cruising experience, the yacht features an ultra-modern stabilization system that minimises the roll motion effect and is equipped with ‘at anchor stabilisers’ to increase comfort when the boat is stationary. Featuring the Art Deco interior design, with an innovative, technology-rich environment and the use of soft metallic fabrics, Eclipse offers a splendid living experience for its owner. With diverse facilities across the decks, the yacht meets the optimum standard of offering a leisure time platform.

The entire yacht has been bejewelled with features to make it more luxurious. Spread across many decks, Eclipse facilities abroad include a gym, dance floor, underwater lights, beach club, wifi connection, beauty salon, tender, garage, deck jacuzzi, etc. Further, the Eclipse holds two helipads and a 16 m swimming pool that can be converted into a dance floor. This motor yacht can accommodate three helicopters, two on both helipads and the third one in a storage hangar below the foredeck. Moreover, Eclipse also flaunts internal lifts, six tenders and an exterior fireplace on-board. The boat also features a place for a three-person private submarine that can go up to a depth of 160ft.

Eclipse is also one of the most technologically advanced yachts around the world.  The boat boasts the latest technology safety features, including motion sensors, bulletproof glass and antiballistic missile defence.  In fact, each cabin in the yacht comes with a private 6ft home cinema screen, a Jacuzzi, a spa and specialized security systems. According to reports, Eclipse has an anti-paparazzi system that detects the use of digital cameras to click photographs of the boat. Using lasers, the system detects digital cameras and disrupts a potential picture of the yacht, as those infrared lights can make it unstable.

Accommodation

The yacht has 11 staterooms and suites, totalling 6000 square feet. With this facility, Eclipse can house 30 guests and a 92-member staff crew abroad. The master suite, located on level five of the yacht, is 5000 square feet alone. In addition, the boat also has a pilothouse on level seven.

With all these facilities incorporated, maintaining the Eclipse is not a less expensive matter. An annual expense of over $60 million is reportedly required to maintain this luxury boat. According to media reports, Abramovich charges its customers around £ 175,000 to rent the vessel for a day.

Superyacht ECLIPSE Owned by Roman Abramovich is the Largest Private Luxury Yacht in the world. Yacht Eclipse - Photo image by ship and yacht photographer Klaus Kehrls

The huge steel displacement superyacht ECLIPSE measures around 170 metres, making her the world’s largest (or longest) private mega yacht in the world. M/Y ECLIPSE was designed by Hermidas Atabeyki with interior designs by the very well know yacht designer Terrence Disdale. She was built by the Thyssenkrupp Blohm + Voss shipyard in Hamburg, which is a large industrial giant in Germany. The mega yacht has a gross tonnage of around 13,000 tonnes and superyacht Eclipse is slightly larger (around 36 ft longer) than the world’s previous longest private luxury yacht Dubai at 162 m, as owned by Sheikh Mohammed of Dubai.

Summary of Motor Yacht Eclipse and her custom features:

Yacht Eclipse is able to accommodate her guests in 11 staterooms and suites with 6,000 sq ft of living space and 600 doors. The premiere luxury yacht features incredible technology including heli facilities (with two helicopter pads), two swimming pools, several hot tubs, a disco hall, three launch boats and a mini-submarine capable of submerging up to 165ft. The Blohm & Voss built mega yacht reportedly has intruder detection alarms installed as well as an advanced missile defence system.

Yacht ECLIPSE was built by the experienced yacht owner Roman Abramovich who has commissioned several motor yachts including Le Grand Bleu, Pelorus, Sussurro and Ecstasea and now Eclipse. Perhaps the most complex private yacht ever built, yacht Eclipse had a preliminary launch back in late 2009 and her finishing and testing currently underway by Blohm & Voss in Germany and Norway. - Photo image by ship and yacht photographer Klaus Kehrls

The yacht is also possibly equipped with an ‘anti-paparazzi shield’, as activated by camera flashlights, which prevents some photography when operating by using lasers aimed directly at the offending cameras to overexpose unwanted photographs. In addition some of the windows on megayacht ECLIPSE have bullet proof glass and other areas are armour-plated for ultimate security against increasing worldwide piracy attempts.

Yacht ECLIPSE was built by the yacht owner Mr. Roman Abramovich and had her preliminary launch back in late 2009 with finishing and testing still being carried out in Germany and Norway. Roman Abramovich the experienced owner has commissioned several motor yachts including Le Grand Bleu, Pelorus, Sussurro and Ecstasea and now Eclipse.

Designing interiors on the world’s largest superyachts

Dasha remembers her first big interview in the superyacht industry. The interior designer and OS manager for Roman Abramovich's famous 162.5m superyacht M/Y Eclipse was on maternity leave and so a replacement was needed. The interview took place around a large table in a Michelin star restaurant with representatives from both management and the client side quizzing the young designer. When the restaurant brought her the wrong meal she was faced with a dilemma, “What should I do? Should I send it back and get what I ordered? I don't want to make a fuss, but then again, this is a nice restaurant and they should get it right.”

She decided to kindly ask the waiter to replace her meal with what she ordered. It turned out to be one of the most important career decisions she had ever made, and it was followed by handshakes all around, ‘Congratulations, you’ve got the job.’ The representatives revealed that it had been the final test of her interview, to see whether she would favour agreeableness in the face of adversity, or if she would stick to her guns and get what she wants. “Yeah, so that was basically my big entrance into the superyacht industry - it was very interesting!”

Dasha went on to work as the interior and owner supply manager for not only Eclipse , but also partly for the 115m expedition superyacht Luna - which was being built at the same time. Dasha explained how it was one of the most intense but amazing experiences of her career, “I was working for Blue Ocean Yacht management, representing the owners side for Mr Abramovich and we were building two boats at the same time. I was on daily calls with the Terence Disdale team, meeting the shipyard interior manager as well as all different contractors and subcontractors. I was also the one who made the final acceptances on the interior side and locked the rooms once completed...

"I was living in Hamburg, and I was literally almost sleeping on the ship because I was working such crazy hours, trying to learn everything and spend as much time on board as possible."

We had a big floating office which was right next to the boat from which we managed everything in between the different groups and from all the different sides. We had a large window in our office from which we could see inside the floating deck and see the ship almost from our desks. Our engineering teams shared the build progress with me and I was helping to prepare monthly reports to Mr A about what was happening.” Dasha continues, “It was an absolutely unforgettable experience with many wonderful people who remain my close friends until this very day. I think that the main thing I learnt was to always be on site, see how everything is being put together, how it's being built, and how all these parties are working together. It was like watching an orchestra.”

After Eclipse and Luna were delivered in 2009 and 2010, Dasha continued helping BOYM with the design for Damen Yachting on 50m Oberon . Then came her new chapter and a new role as senior interior designer at Terence Disdale Design in London, working on projects with Abeking & Rasmussen on the 80m-plus yachts Kibo and Romea , also a short period designing at Winch Design on 156m Dilbar which was delivered in 2016 at Lürssen . Her impressive resumé doesn’t end there. Once relocated to Amsterdam, her recent work included leading a 20-member team on a six-star hotel project in Qatar and designing a VIP centre at Schiphol Airport, in which the Dutch royal family also have their own rest area. Her latest project and collaboration with former colleague Jim Sluijter, Alice , was a major head turner on the Lürssen stand at Monaco Yacht Show 2021.

Dasha came from humble beginnings before she skyrocketed onto the yachting scene. The spaces she designs today are in a sense the antithesis to the environment where she grew up in the former communist state of Czechoslovakia, now Czech Republic. As a young girl she would spend all her time in her fathers workshop in the mountainous and historical region of Moravia. As her passion for design blossomed in her teenage years she decided to spend six years studying at the University of Art, Architecture and Designs in Prague. It was only after the borders were opened in 1991 that she could travel to places like the south of France and Italy to start seeing superyachts and the Mediterranean way of life. And so, it was when she moved to a new life in Palma De Mallorca that her career in yachting really began.

Dasha went on to explain, “For me personally it’s very important to design a space which you enter and will immediately feel relaxed and calm - where simply nothing will bother you. For this it is important to play with lighting, select the right walls and furniture colours and finishes, play with interesting textures and balance it all with the right scent in the room. Our brain is very sensitive to the environment we surround ourselves with and therefore the interior can very much affect our mood and our health. Of course each space is designed to bring different energy and evoke a different emotion in us...

"Interior design is very much about psychology. I love this subject, I constantly educate myself and learn from old Chinese and Japanese schools to see how colours, patterns and shapes affect us.”

This notion is best portrayed by the concept interiors on Lürssens Alice , which combines glamorous living with a sense of ecological responsibility. By placing mental wellbeing at the forefront of her designs, Dasha was able to create a space which summons feelings of being calm, relaxed, and at one with nature. The light and restful interior also compliments Sluijters exterior work which introduces the idea of using the deck space for parks and ponds. The team behind the concept took every detail into consideration, for example, the mirrored glass windows around the owner’s deck which reflect heat, serving as thermal insulation and thus reducing the energy load of the air conditioning systems.

She admits that she does her very best to not let anything frustrate her - a noble mission considering her line of work and the level of stress that comes with it. With that being said, collaboration is undoubtedly Dasha’s raison d’etre, and the obvious lack of it in the superyacht industry is her only and main gripe. She is of the opinion that truly incredible products can only be achieved if the parties involved work hand in hand instead of working against each other, which can sometimes be the case when things don’t go to plan.

inside eclipse yacht

Dasha explained that, “It is very important that designers, both exterior and interior, together with the engineers, shipyard and owners representatives work very closely, pretty much hand in hand. It’s so important as we as a team are able to create magic and I still don’t see it happen enough...

"There is lots of time wasted only because people don’t work together when facing problems, and additionally I would just add that in general, no matter what size of the yacht, the storage space is always an issue.”

As Dasha sees it, any design begins by place in one of two categories - it is either for a specific person, or it is for a public area. From that point, she is able to decipher what the next move is that she needs to take, “If I design for a specific client it is very important for me to know his/her lifestyle. What is important to them? How do they like to spend their day? What do they like to do? How do they feel about certain colours? The public areas - or common spaces are more generic and the design details and style should be made to make everyone feel welcomed and happy, or perhaps energised depending on the use of the space.”

Dasha believes that her latest project Alice is a prime example of what a superyacht design of the future should look like. The concept exemplifies what a modern superyacht owner is looking for in today's age, it is also Lürssen's way of dictating their future narrative, and providing a beacon of reason and inspiration in a chaotic media landscape. Although her reputation precedes her, Dasha remains full of energy and enthusiasm about her chosen field of work, despite rarely being able to show off the fruits of her labour to the wider public. With the winning combination of a wise head on young shoulders, stakeholders can rest assured that the future hidden gems of the industry's designs are up to scratch even for the most elite members of our society.

A Closer Look at the $1.5 Billion Superyacht Eclipse

If wishes were horses, beggars would ride, but that does not mean we have to stop working towards getting the desires of our hearts. Everyone wants to the best because the spirit of competition was instilled in us in our childhood. By the age of four, you are frowning if your dress or shirt is not as good as your sibling’s. It is not wrong to have high levels of self-esteem but sometimes wanting to be the greatest can have us being arrogant like the makers of Titanic who were so proud of their creation that they thought it would never sink only to have it become a disaster that claimed the lives of 1,500 people. Pride comes before a fall, and Roman Abramovich should have learned from this proverb if not from the story of the Titanic. Then again, do we ever learn? Roman went out of his way to have a yacht that would eclipse all other boats at sea; hence, he came up with “Eclipse,” a 533-foot long yacht. He was able to get the desires of his heart since Eclipse was named the world’s most expensive and largest yacht according to Marine Insight , but the achievement lasted for less than three years because Azzam took over the title in April 2013, with a length of 590 feet. Let’s take a closer look at Roman’s Eclipse and see if it is worth being valued at $1.5 billion.

The defense system

With money and fame comes enemies and Roman was not going to take chances with his life, so he installed a high-level security system on his yacht. News can make or break you, and we all know that the paparazzi always are putting their noses where they should not. Roman, therefore, ensured that they would never catch him with his pants down by installing an anti-paparazzi security system to protect him from their prying eyes. As The Guardian explains , the system is in the form of a laser beam that detects electronic light sensors from digital cameras; then it hits back at the camera with a bright light such that any pictures a person takes will be useless. The essence, therefore, is not to stop the cameramen from taking shots of the boat, but to frustrate their efforts by making all shots captured unusable. Of course, a relentless cameraman can still go out of his way to get the analog cameras that use film since they would not be detected by the lasers. With such a serious hitch it makes you wonder why someone with all the wealth in the world could not ensure that even such cameras do not get anywhere close to him, or maybe we can blame technology for that.

You can never be too careful, so if paparazzi are not bothering you, it could be that pirates are planning to kidnap you and have their payday or the people you have pissed off want you dead. Roman had that covered with bulletproof glass windows all round his master suite as well as an armor plate surrounding it and the bridge. If things get too hot to remain on the boat, the option of getting out into the sea and escaping is well catered for by a submarine that can carry two passengers. Alternatively, the two helicopter pads will make sure that a helicopter is ready to fly Roman to safety. Moreover, in this day, when someone will kill you remotely using a drone strike, Roman went steps further to ensure that no danger would find him unprepared. He, therefore, has a missile detection system on the boat that was installed by AST, a company with a close connection to the German defense ministry; goes to show the expertise of the firm.

Other features

Besides the extravagant and high-tech defense system, other things that Roman has on Eclipse are two swimming pools, a disco hall, 24 guest cabins, and a few hot tubs. Those who pay attention to their looks will find the beauty salon, spa, massage room, and gym very instrumental. The cabins are luxurious and are fitted with a 6-feet home cinema screen and specialized security systems.

How much does it cost to maintain it?

When you hear of a boat being referred to as a “$1.5 billion superyacht,” you think that is the cost of constructing it. The figure was around $400 million, but then with time passage, the billionaire has to keep upgrading the boat and installing features he might find necessary. Therefore the amount has gone up considerably over the years . The cost of construction may be too high, but have you ever considered how much it costs Roman to maintain it? Imagine the dollars you part with every year to keep your car running, yet this is a large boat that has lots of crew members and staff. You complain of thousands of dollars that go into babysitting per year yet they are your children being looked after; Roman has to fork out 40 million Euros every year to maintain the 70 crewmembers aboard the Eclipse, according to The Sun.

Parking fees for your vehicle can put a dent in your pocket especially when they add up; parking charges for Disney World are around $25 per day, so if you plan on staying for five days in the resort hotel, you should be prepared to pay $125. If you think that is too much, think of Roman who cannot take his boat home and park it in a garage. He, therefore, has no choice but to pay dockage fees when the boat is not at sea, and it costs him around $2,000 per day, as reported by City Room .

With insurance covers, fuel, and repairs, you can be sure that the yearly cost goes up significantly. For instance, in 2017, when Eclipse stopped at Port Gruz to refuel and ordered 750 tons of fuel, the cost was around one million euros. In early 2015, Eclipse underwent a renovation, and by the end of the year, it was back at its builders for maintenance. Such expenses can only be catered for billionaires; as for the rest of us, let’s keep competing on who has the trendiest clothes, handbags, and shoes and leave the superyachts to the likes of Roman Abramovich.

ECLIPSE 505

There’s something about a beautifully executed, modern-classic express cruiser that makes the heart swoon.

Maybe it’s the way the house shape reminds us of the hardiest lobster boats, with all the go-to-sea romance that lifestyle embodies along the coast of Maine. Or maybe it’s the sweep in the sheerline with the proud bow that practically begs to let loose from the dock and head out for a long weekend of exploration off the coast. Hull-paint colors on modern classics are downright soothing. It’s as if a yacht designer put pen to paper and created a vision for inducing a sense of calm.

But then there’s also the good kind of heart pounding that a true modern classic also inspires. Take all of that sensuous style, then add a pair or a trio of 600 hp Mercury V-12 outboards along with a proven performance hull shape, and the boat has everything we need to feel the thrill of tearing across the open water at speeds not seen in this segment. It’s total control and absolute exhilaration, for as little or as long a time as we desire.

These are just some of the qualities embodied in the all-new ECLIPSE 505 and ECLIPSE 605, now for sale through HMY Yachts. The first ECLIPSE 505 is expected to arrive in the United States this fall, with its premiere planned for the 2024 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show in Florida. The first ECLIPSE 605 is expected to premiere at the 2025 Ft. Lauderdale International Boat Show.

Two Oceans Marine Manufacturing facility

Both the ECLIPSE 505 and the ECLIPSE 605 are built on the patented Stepped Vee Ventilated Tunnel hull by Sarasota, Florida-based designer Michael Peters. He’s a designer who cites legendary V-hull designer C. Raymond Hunt among his major influences, and who has helped to shape some of the best-performing powerboats of the past few decades.

In a nutshell, Peters’ SVVT hull design reduces the wetted surface, meaning the boat has less drag. In turn, this allows for quicker acceleration, faster speeds, better fuel economy and more. Both the ECLIPSE 505 and 605 can be ordered with the upgraded Shadow Performance Package, which consists of not just exclusive interior appointments, but also more features and an additional Mercury 600 hp engine. This additional power mated to the SVVT hull design will enable faster speeds with reliable handling and allow these express cruisers to stand out in their class.

ECLIPSE 505

The ECLIPSE 505 and 605 are built in South Africa by Two Oceans Marine Manufacturing, the same yard that turns out the Two Oceans Power Catamarans in the HMY Yachts stable of offerings. Dave Jirikovic, brand manager of both lines for HMY Yachts, says the plan is to build about 20 of the ECLIPSE 505 and 15 ECLIPSE 605 boats each year, focusing on high-end finishes and components inside and out—as well as on the type of upscale, concierge-level service that owners in this quality range expect.

“The ECLIPSE 505 and 605 are built for the most discerning yachtsmen,” Jirikovic says. “In July of 2022, HMY bought the former Whiticar Boatworks fully functional yard—now called HMY Willoughby Creek—in Stuart, Florida, to be the dedicated service and delivery center for the ECLIPSE owner. Renovations commenced immediately in preparation for the future arrival of ECLIPSE 505s and 605s. Our goal is to create a totally different experience for the customer—from on-site factory-certified Mercury 600 V-12 technicians, to delivery of your new ECLIPSE being out of the elements and under brand-new covered dockage. We are going the extra mile to ensure ECLIPSE customers receive a next-level experience.”

Two Oceans Marine Manufacturing facility

The ECLIPSE 505 is a two-stateroom, two-head design, while the ECLIPSE 605 has a three-stateroom, three-head layout. The boats are ideal for long weekends or weeklong getaways with family and friends. They have American components for ease of service anywhere, and they’re built with features that allow in fresh air and natural light to enhance the cruising experience, such as a retractable moonroof and an opening portside balcony in the cockpit.

Other things to look for in the ECLIPSE models, Jirikovic says, are innovative design elements that make boating easier—the kinds of touches that experienced yachtsmen appreciate. As just one example, the aft door leading from the main-deck salon into the cockpit can slide inboard or outboard on centerline to open, instead of requiring a battle of wills on days when there’s wind to contend with in a harbor.

“We have eliminated pinch points like those created by bi-fold doors,” he says. “Just open the center of the door on a bad day to go in and out of the boat without issue.”

Another advancement is the boarding door to starboard, which, unlike on other boats, doesn’t hinge in or out at all. It’s designed to make life easier for boaters whose hands are full and, well, to look darn cool at any dock as it disappears completely out of view and out of the way.

“It retracts into the cockpit sole,” Jirikovic says. “It’s unlike anything anyone has seen on the docks.”

ECLIPSE 505

Interiors on the ECLIPSE 505 and 605 are by Mark Tucker’s renowned team at Design Unlimited in the United Kingdom. He has more than 30 years of experience in the business, with the company’s work including not just higher-end production brands like the ECLIPSE, but also custom superyachts for top yards.

All of that experience will combine with the sales and service power of HMY Yachts, which is the exclusive worldwide dealer for all ECLIPSE models. The partnership means boaters will be able to get aboard these boats at major boat shows, touch and feel the fabrics and components to see the high quality of each model’s construction, and schedule sea trials with experienced captains and brokers who can answer any questions about handling, options and more.

“The worldwide debut will be powered by the HMY team, which has been delivering results since 1979,” says Steve Moynihan, founder and owner of HMY Yachts. “Our commitment to service our customers is unrivaled in the industry.”
