M5 (ex Mirabella V) restyled by Pendennis Shipyard

M5 's stern was remodeled at the pendennis shipyard in falmouth, uk and completed her sail trials successful..

M5 was originally built in 2004 as Mirabella V . Until she is still the largest sloop with over 75 meters (length of the hull) and an almost 90 meters long mast.

Designed and manufactured by Carbo-Link with OYS making the fittings, the 34 new carbon fiber stays, and titanium fittings with built-in dynamic fiber optics have decreased the weight of the rig by 18 tons. The sail trials not only established the M5 ‘s potential speed but tested the new system and balance of the yacht under sail for the first time. During several hours on the water with challenging sea conditions, the remodeled boat performed well, reaching 17.7 knots in 18-23 knots of wind.

The project, due to be completed over the next month, has seen a collaboration between Pendennis and the original designer Ron Holland , to achieve the Owners idea of extending the stern by 3m which has created a new sleeker profile providing an impressive aft deck area. During the refit, Pendennis has completed extensive engineering works and the interiors have been redesigned by UK company Redman Whiteley Dixon .

Historic launch of world’s largest sloop, Mirabella V

Yachting World

 • November 27, 2003

David Glenn joined the crowds thronging the banks of the River Itchen to watch the world's largest sloop Mirabella V emerge from VT's Woolston yard, the last yacht to launch from this famous ship-building site

The much awaited and considerably delayed launch of Joe Vittoria’s 247ft (75.20m), £30 million, Mirabella V, the world’s largest sloop, took place at the VT shipyard at Woolston in Southampton today in front of hundreds of people lining the banks of the River Itchen.

Due down the ways at 1200 GMT after Vittoria’s wife Luciana had released the traditional bottle of christening champagne, the 500-ton composite hull, minus its 150-ton lifting keel, had to be given a nudge with a hydraulic ram to set it off along its greased wooden slipways.

Mirabella V should have been launched some six months ago and the tallow that had been put in place between the runway and the wooden cradle, in which the yacht sat, had hardened over time causing a 15-minute delay.

The event was historic in more ways than one. Not only is Mirabella V the largest sloop in the world but it is the last vessel ever to be launched at VT’s Woolston yard which has been sold and will shortly be demolished. According to VT’s press officer Phil Rood more than 600 ships have been launched from this site in the company’s 100 years history. “It seems fitting that the last vessel to go down the ways is the biggest of her type. It’s an historic moment.”

As we stood watching and waiting for the massive hull to slide into a sun-bathed Itchen River following a night of storms, a great cheer from the 250 VT ship workers and Joe Vittoria’s guests signalled the moment had arrived and the gleaming, white painted hull slid effortlessly towards us. Her broad stern created more of a wave than a splash but the precision operation went smoothly with only inches to spare either side of the hull. Divers were sent down to remove the cradle still attached to the hull and then Mirabella was shepherded alongside a nearby wharf by tugs.

Mirabella V will be towed to Portsmouth on Sunday 30 November where she will be moored alongside in the Naval dockyard to have the steel fin of her lifting keel lowered into its casing through an opening in the deck. She will then be floated into a flooded dry dock on the floor of which will be the bulb of the 150-ton keel. The dock will then be drained, the steel encapsulated bulb offered up to the fin and the two sections welded together. If observers think the hull of this extraordinary yacht is impressive, wait until they see the mast. The 285ft (87m) carbon fibre tube is still in the Porchester yard of Halmatic (owned by VT) where is was constructed but it will shortly be taken on a barge to Empress dock in Southampton where it will take a team of riggers two weeks to dress it during December. The standing rod rigging from Ocean Yacht Services, weighs 15 tonnes alone and each Bamar furler for the headsails more than 3.5 tons each. As John Channon of Bamar said: “Every job needed to dress the mast will take a team!” The plan is to step the mast between Christmas and the New Year. Nobody can be quite sure when the first sailing trials will take place but the most optimistic prediction is late January 2004. Certainly by February or March Mirabella V will be preparing for her first outing and Yachting World and yachtingworld.com will be there to record yet another remarkable moment in sailing history.

Mirabella V is owned by Joe Vittoria who sold the car rental company Avis Inc in 1987 after becoming chairman and CEO. Together with Mirabella C and Mirabella 111C, both sailing yachts of more than 130ft (40m), he will charter Mirabella V to a maximum of 12 guests who will pay US$250,000 a week for the yacht. Mirabella V’s first charter obligation will be the Cannes film festival in May and next winter she will head for the Caribbean.

World’s largest single-masted yacht returns!

mirabella 5 sailing yacht

The world’s largest single-masted yacht has returned to San Diego!

The M5 , originally called the Mirabella V, is now docked on the Embarcadero near the Maritime Museum of San Diego. You can find it directly across from the County Administration Building.

I spotted the towering mast while walking nearby, so I had to go take a look. That mind-blowing mast, over 290 feet high, is visible from many streets downtown!

I first saw the M5 in San Diego eight years ago behind the convention center and blogged about it here . Read that old blog post (including its comments) to learn more about this incredible sailboat.

It took these photographs this morning. It’s hard to depict the staggering size of this sloop-rigged super yacht. Suffice it to say, the mast rises higher than many downtown San Diego buildings!

You can see the mast from the other side of the County Administration Building in the next photo. (The exterior of the historic building is being painted.)

The first weekend of October I noticed the M5 had moved to a spot behind the San Diego Convention Center–where I first saw it eight years ago…

Yes, it’s enormous!

I love my hometown of San Diego! I lived in an old Victorian at 5th & A St as a child, but was raised 4 blocks from the beach in Imperial Beach. The photo shot from behind the county building gives a great perspective of the height of that impressive mast!! I love to sail so I can only imagine being on that boat! Thanks!!

Written by Eva Belanyiova

Following her comprehensive 24-month refit at the Pendennis Shipyard , the newly refitted sailing yacht M5 (ex Mirabella V) left Falmouth in the UK recently. M5 yacht arrived at the shipyard in the spring of 2012 and underwent an extensive refit carried out by the yard in collaboration with the Owner’s team, all of whom were working with determination to remodel and modernise this icon of the superyacht industry.

A beautiful sleek new exterior profile from the drawing boards of her original designer Ron Holland Design : “All involved at Ron Holland Design were excited to contribute to the extensive refit of M5. This ground breaking sailing yacht has gained a new life, incorporating her new owners personal detailing requirements as well as new engines, genets, and many related systems. The intention is to ensure M5 can remain in world voyaging condition for the foreseeable future.” The result is a truly remarkable record breaking superyacht that provides sumptuous living and entertainment spaces on board for up to 16 guests.

The M5 superyacht refit project brought together a number of well-known industry names to bring the Owners vision to life. New lightweight carbon rigging was designed and manufactured by Carbo-link with OYS making all the fittings. Marine Results fitted all the rigging onto the mast. An elegant art deco inspired interior created by the team at Redman Whiteley Dixon . As Toby Ecuyer, Director, explained: “We were privileged to be involved in the transformation of this truly magnificent yacht. The Owner’s unfailing vision, dedication and trust coupled with Pendennis’ expertise established the foundations of an extraordinary project. In concert with a remarkable collective of talented craftsmen, designers, engineers and project managers, all of whom have worked tirelessly to transform M5 into truly impressive Superyacht; we have very much enjoyed working with Ron Holland and his team, the crew and of course so many familiar faces at PSY during this remarkable refit project.”

Following the completion of her final fit-out, sail trials and systems testing earlier this year M5 left Falmouth bound for the South Atlantic and Pacific Oceans in early April. Rocka Romcke, Captain and Owner’s Rep on M5 yacht commented: “We are all incredibly proud of our involvement in and management of the extensive refit on M5. Working together with all of our key project partners, we have given M5 a new lease of life and prepared her for her next adventure.”

Further Information:

Pendennis has one of the world’s leading custom superyacht build and refit facilities. Building on hundreds of years of local maritime heritage, Pendennis has become one of Cornwall’s most important employers – with over 350 highly skilled trades people based at the 6.5 acre prime water front location in Falmouth, UK.

The yard’s current development plans have seen the available undercover space increased to provide three water-facing main sheds which consist of 2x90m and 1x45m construction halls. This has provided additional flexible undercover space for Pendennis increasing capacity for both new build and refit contracts for 30-100m superyachts. The yard has taken delivery of a 600tonne travel hoist to support these new facilities. This year Pendennis will be developing an adjustable-depth wet basin to accommodate superyachts before and after their time in the yard.*

Over the past few years the company has expanded with the creation of the Pendennis Palma refit facility in 2011. The creation of Pendennis Plus (following the acquisition of Devonport Yachts in 2011) added expertise in the 60m+ arena, and in 2013 the company extended their yacht support service to the Pacific. Having celebrated its 25 th anniversary in 2013, Pendennis continues to continually improve its facilities and international reputation.

Superyacht Mirabella V sold

It's been a remarkable week as Jacqui Lockhart at Select Charter Services sends word that the 75.22m sailing yacht Mirabella V was sold last week to a private owner who plans a major refit and then extensive cruising. Captain Rocka Romcke and his crew will stay on board with the new owner. Jacqui worked with the owners since conception and advises that "it was a pleasure to be involved in such a unique project and to represent her successfully for charter over the last seven years." Mirabella V may return to the charter market again in the future.

Her owner, Joseph Vittoria, comments, "After seven wonderful years creating Mirabella V and six exciting years sailing in her, it was time to move on. She is in good hands which was very important for us."

Mirabella V is a superyacht in every sense of the word. At 75.22 metres, she is the largest single-masted sailing yacht in the world, and holds the world record for the largest sail and the tallest mast. She has a very spacious interior that can accommodate up to 16 guests in a master suite, four doubles and two twins plus two Pullman berths. Delivered in 2004 by Vosper Thornycroft to a Ron Holland design, she’s proved to be a very popular charter yacht and was featured in the 2005 edition of The Superyachts book.

Sailing trip on Mirabella V

 • Thread starter tcm
 • Start date 5 Jun 2006

We went sailing on Mirabella 5 last week. It was utterly and totally fantastic. We joined the boat from Monaco, the day after the grand prix. I think the crew had hoped that it might be easier/quicker to lift the anchors than it actually was, but after a couple of hours of diver help to unknit the anchors from all the other anchors, MV motored out of the port. The deck is very high up - especially the upper flybridge deck which might be 30-40 feet from the sea. It's a better height from which to see other big boats, and unlike smaller boats the view is not invariably dominated by the sea in the foreground. Bit overcast in monaco but it soon cleared. The Hinckley tender rejoined at sea outside monaco. Very whizzy how the tender can be hoiked on board even whilst underway. It drives up to tyre-wheel arrangement to locate the bow, then engines off and winched in. 12ish knots of wind onshore breeze so sails up and whoosh off it went. We had some lunch whilst sailing along, all very swish. Mostly, I just sat around in one or more of the hundreds of comfy seats on the gigantic deck, thinking flippinek, wow. Even the head honcho of a big superyacht brokerage (also on board) was blown away, and rang up lots of his mates to tell them he was on Mirabella 5, and texted plenty of people as well. I have some pics. Hope they work... edit: er, damn they didn't work.... i will have another go..

Hee hee, what fun 4th pic looks like your lad has a choc ice in his hand and is about to alter Mrs Vs upholstery for her Great piccies

ooer, I am a little worried now that I was extremely rude about asking for more pictures of the girl in the bikini as it might have been your daughter and that would make my request possibly offensive and crass. . . . . . . .. . . . .. . . . . .. . .. Have you got any better pictures of your daughter in her bikini /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

landaftaf

maybe you ought take lakesailor with you next time ....... he takes nice crass piccies /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

actually only a shadow. Yiou are right that they are all very fab on aesthetics. Frexample, i understand that the crew wear different coloured belts, shorts and shirts for daytime and evening, and different for different days. So look closely and you can see we saw them on an all-white with turquoise belt day...

How long did it take to winch the main up? I have it in my head due to the size of the cloth it takes ages to get her ready to sail.

didn't seem very long really, bout the same time as a nordinary boat, a few minutes. Then usual bosh, two foresails. It tookem a while to clean the inflatable fenders tho, i think they got a bit manky with all the brake dust etc around monaco.

Fascinating stuff. That's one hell of a polish on the table Did you give the teak a quick tcm? I can see some streaks on yer shorts which might be Wessex praps? And is that a fag burn to the left of yer knee on the recliner? Not much of a queue at the bar, my sort of boat and ver nice day out by looks

Lucky bloke!!! Fab pics - thanks for posting them. Good to see you on a raggie, albeit a rather special one! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

the teak table was sprayed recently - incredible finish innit? I refrained from mentioning teak at all but it all looked fine - altho apparently during a recent party one tw*t had stubbed out a cigarette on the deck - can you imagine that on any boat let alone that one? Jeez!

Being really picky now as I study the pics The aft deck is littered with dock lines whereas she was anchored and returned to anchor Fatigues for the crew methinks

longjohnsadler

Right yer flash git. Was this a paid cruise or were you on 'journalists expenses?' BTW I've been practising on the pool table....
