Between Belleek at the northern end of Lough Erne to Killaloe at the southern end of the River Shannon there are 300 miles of rivers and lakes to explore on your Ireland boating holiday. We offer a superb range of cruiser boats and Penichette boats on the Irish rivers and canals.

On an Irish boating holiday you can experience the legendary Irish hospitality and enjoy the 'craich' in the local hostelries - some reputed never to close during the summer months!

You are free to stop where the mood takes you, to walk, sightsee or bicycle ride. Perhaps enjoy a round on some 300 of the world's finest golf courses. Maybe try fishing on the superb waters of Upper and Lower Lough Erne - we can usually supply fishing dinghies with boats, perhaps fishing equipment as well.

In Ireland, a friendly welcome at all times more than compensates for the climate which makes Ireland such a green country!

Boat Hire Bases

We offer boats from 4 boat bases in Ireland: Upper Shannon River: Carrick on Shannon Lower Shannon River :Portumna and Banagher

Different types of boat are available from the various bases. Check out the types offered in our Choosing your Boat guide.

Boat hire is normally on an out-and-back basis. In addition we offer one-way trips between Carrick and Portumna . Your car is normally transferred to the return base at a small supplementary charge. Tariffs are normally on a weekly basis with longer cruises of 10/11 days or 2/3 weeks also available. Short breaks may sometimes be possible. Penichette Boat Base

The Penichette boat base at Banagher is the ideal base to explore the lower Shannon and Lough Derg, the largest lake on the waterway system.

• To cruise on the Shannon-Erne waterway, you will need to buy a smart card to operate the locks, these are available from all bases at a cost of approxomately €13 for 20 units. Locks and bridges onthe River Shannon cost approx €1.50 each.

The Shannon divides Ireland, with Connacht in the west and Leinster and Munster to the east and south. The river flows through 11 of the counties of Ireland. There are several lakes on the Shannon, including, Lough Allen, Lough Derg and Lough Ree. Two canals connect with the Shannon, including: the Royal Canal and the Grand Canal. The River Shannon has historically had great strategic importance attached to it in military encounters.

The Shannon provides excellent opportunities for water sports and is a very popular tourist attraction in the summer months. The river is relatively slow moving because it only falls 60 feet in the first 150 miles of its course.

Locks & bridges, voyages & visits.

Yes. All customers will be given full tuition before leaving the marina. 

No licences are necessary to hire our boats.

Everything is included except your fuel and any extras such as outboards, bikes, etc that you choose. You must also pay a returnable damage deposit the amount varies with the class of boat.

All bedding, towels and kitchen equipment is provided including washing-up liquid and dish towels. There are no charges for use of the majority of marinas and jetties. A small charge is payable for the locks on the Shannon and Shannon-Erne waterway if you travel this far. A smart card must be used for these locks and can be purchased at the Tourist Information Centre or as an extra through us.

Navigation charts are provided on-board. Lifejackets and all safety equipment are included. Children’s life jackets are available

The boat will be available from 4pm on the day of arrival and must be vacated by 11am on the last day.

On your boating holidays in Ireland , discover Ireland’s hidden Hearthlands aboard a Carrickcraft cruise ship. You’ll captain your own cruise ship as you meander slowly along the many rivers, lakes and canals, admiring the spectacular scenery, history and heritage and meeting the friendly locals.

The River Shannon is the longest river in the British Isles and runs down the middle of Ireland through flat farmland towards the sea at Limerick. And as the land is so flat, the river only falls 65 feet on the navigable section, so it is a wide, slow river, ideal for a calm and tranquil boating holiday in Ireland .

The Shannon used to be a semi-commercial waterway with Guinness barges sailing up from Dublin on the Grand Canal and then along the Shannon. Todays, however, there’s no commercial traffic; only pleasure boaters enjoy the wide open spaces on their boating holidays in Ireland . Even the land is quiet: the County Leitrim , at the northern end of the Shannon, has a population density of less than 20 people per square km.

The River Erne flows north from Belturbet to Belleek, so the Upper Lough is the Lower Lough and the Lower Lough is the Upper Lough (on a map!). It is very quiet and remote, so if you are on a boat you could be all alone on an island jetty in the middle of nowhere.

Our diaspora, whether they left by choice or necessity, number some 70 million. But we love coming home, too – to our native cities, countryside and kitchens.

We love spending time with our families, enjoy a gossip around the kitchen table and chat to anyone who’ll listen to us. It’s no secret that there’s a creative side to the Irish personality. Think the Book of Kells and the Expressionist painter Jack B Yeats (brother of the poet, WB). Think ancient sagas and legends like An Táin and the Children of Lir to writers such as James Joyce, CS Lewis and Seamus Heaney. Think actors like Maureen O’Hara to Liam Neeson and Saoirse Ronan.

Yes, art has always coursed through our veins. The beauty of this creative spark, however, is that it doesn’t just belong to Bono, Enya and Snow Patrol. History and Heritage

As you cruise along the Waterways of Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands on your boating holidays in Ireland , 5,000 years of history flashes before your eyes.  You will find numerous fascinating sites of historic interest right on the river or just a short walk from the moorings. To provide protection from invaders, many of the fortifications were built on islands or close to rivers, so with a cruiser, you have access to many sites only accessible by boat. 

From the 6 th century carved figures on White Island in Lough Erne to the many round towers and medieval ruins all along the Shannon, you will be amazed at how the country’s traditional culture has been preserved in modern day Ireland. Particular attention should also be paid to the many locks and bridges which have historic interest on your boating holidays in Ireland , such as Meelick Lock and the magnificent 16 arch bridge at Shannonbridge. 

Even the harbours themselves tell us much about bygone days, for example the historic Richmond Harbour at the entrance to the Royal Canal. Many of the sites have excellent visitor centres or museums where you can discover more about the site and its past.  Only a few types of holiday offer such unrivalled access to unique history and heritage as  boating holidays in Ireland .

Not too hot and not too cold, Ireland’s climate is perfect for boating holidays .

In Ireland, we all talk about the weather. Whether it’s discussing the direction of the rain from a shop doorway, or musing that it’s 24 degrees in March with a Lock Keeper. Irish weather can be unpredictable, so we like to discuss it. A lot.

Ireland’s climate is influenced mostly by the Atlantic Ocean. As a result, it doesn’t have the extreme temperatures that other countries at similar latitude would have. The average temperature is a mild 10°C.

Ireland is known as the Emerald Isle because it is so green, but of course that’s because it rains quite a lot!  If you plan for some rain on your holiday, you will be well prepared (it has been said that there is no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing).

The sunlight sparkles on the water as you glide past lush countryside and quiet little towns. The only sounds you hear are birdsong and the water lapping at the sides of your cruiser. This is the kind of idyllic afternoon you can expect as you go cruising on one of Ireland’s rivers, canals or lakes. Peace, tranquillity and an escape from the demands of modern life.

By going on a boat tour, you get to see the real Ireland; those hidden places that you would never know existed if you only journeyed by road. This wild, unspoiled landscape has hardly changed in thousands of years, and you can see evidence of the country’s rich history everywhere. Ancient standing stones and mysterious stone statues, early Christian monasteries and round towers, impressive medieval castles and elegant mansions with their formal gardens.

With around 4,000 inland lakes, connected by a network of rivers and canals, Ireland offers endless possibilities to the cruising enthusiast. Just look at a map of the island and you can see how the country is split by its network of rivers and lakes. These inland waterways used to be busy transport routes but these days, their occupants are mostly leisure cruisers of all sizes, taking advantage of the lack of commercial traffic on Irish waters.

One of the wonderful things about river cruises is that you can stop and explore where and when you like. Gourmet meals, island picnics, activity parks, castles, gardens, bike trips, canoeing, angling: all and more are within easy reach of the water. And should a night on dry land be of interest, you can choose anything from a cosy B&B to a luxury castle hotel.

We rented a few hour boat tour with Vincent for my wife's birthday. The trip was awesome and Vincent did everything to make us feel welcomed and comfortable on board. Vincent is a great person and also very experienced in sailing and navigation, and his boat is a class which offers lots of space for indoor and outdoor stay, including 2 decks on the boat itself. We enjoyed the boat stay and Vincent's company a lot and would definitely recommend him and would probably go again ourselves. Thank you Vincent for unforgettable experience, my wife loved it! :)

Authentic Ireland

Keshcarrigan is a village in County Leitrim, Ireland. It is situated on the Shannon-Erne waterway. An ancient pagan burial site overlooks Lough Scur to the north and Keshcarrigan Lough to the south.

Ballinamore is a small town in County Leitrim, Ireland. Feel free to take advantage of your boat cruise to make a stopover in Ballinamore and take a stroll around the town. You will be pleasantly surprised by the architecture of its Irish houses and its green and flowery gardens.

County Leitrim is a border region with Northern Ireland. Renowned for its fishing and scenic beauty, it is primarily split in two by the Shannon and Lough Allen.
