Used Viking 48 Convertible For Sale

The 48 Convertible, originally introduced in 1985, was known for its speed and quickly became a very popular Viking model. The updated second generation 48 Convertible was produced from 2002 to 2009. This third generation of the ever popular 48 Convertible was launched in 2017 after a successful 6-7 year run of the 46 Convertible (2010-2016). The larger 124 sq ft cockpit of the new 48C allows space under aft deck for a Seakeeper gyrostabilizer that has become a popular option in recent years.

DESCRIPTION

Following the accommodations floorplan of the 2-stateroom 46C, the 48 Convertible features a 3-stateroom layout with midships master and ensuite head taking up the entire starboard side. The two guest staterooms and guest/day head are on port side. Like the 46C, the companionway is shifted to port and is a change from the 48 Convertible of 2002-2009. Viking’s design team and engineers are constantly working to refine and improve each model in response to customers’ requirements and requests, new technologies, electronics, materials, and more. The tournament proven, proprietary Viking hull and systems, and distinctive sleek sportfish profile remain identifiably, Viking Yachts. The new 48C sports a black metallic windshield mask that blends in perfectly with the side windows in a graceful swash that emphasizes the fiercely elegant profile and sheerline.

Today’s 48 Convertible performs above and beyond its competition, with 30 knot cruising speed and top speed in mid 30s range powered by the standard twin MAN V8 900 CRM diesels. Owners can upgrade to 1000 hp or 1200 hp MAN engines if greater power is preferred. Fuel capacity is 1,100 gallons giving the 48C great range for distant fishing spots. And the luxurious interior and accommodations ensure the utmost comfort for longer passages. With its own woodshop and skilled craftsmen, Viking’s joinery is superb in either hand-finished teak or walnut, for the warm, classic elegance owners have come to expect of a Viking yacht. And with nearly every component made in-house, Viking is able to achieve consistent quality and production efficiencies. It also gives Viking the flexibility for custom requests.

The 17-foot beam of the new 48 Convertible expands the interior space for a roomier layout. The salon is consistent with the convertible design—sliding door entry from cockpit steps, L-shaped couch with storage underneath and cocktail table on starboard side. Across from couch is the entertainment center in teak or walnut cabinetry and features the Bose surround sound home theater system and a 40” TV is mounted on forward bulkhead above dinette. Open U-shaped galley is on forward starboard side and features peninsula counter with a raised bar top at the end—a feature borrowed from Viking’s 80 to 92-foot Convertibles!

The galley has its own electrical panel for high-end appliances include Subzero undercounter refrigerator and freezer drawers, microwave/convection oven, and 3-burner electric cooktop. Stainless-steel sink with garbage disposal is undermounted in Cambria countertop. Galley has plenty of storage in satin or gloss finished matched grain cabinetry and drawers, and Cambria countertop space for prepping/serving food and beverages. Fluted valances, frameless window treatments, walnut accents in headliner, fine materials, furnishings, and other designer touches create a luxurious yet comfortable salon area for relaxing, entertaining, and dining.

A few steps down from salon is the accommodations level. The midships master suite fills the entire starboard side, with the ensuite master head starboard forward. The large master features an island queen berth, maple-lined hanging lockers, drawer and cabinet storage, 32” wall-mounted TV and entertainment system. Ensuite head features Amtico flooring, Cambria countertops, and large fiberglass shower stall. Two guest staterooms with generous over/under bunks take up the forepeak and portside along with the guest/day head that is aft of the staterooms. Laundry center with washer and dryer are portside at bottom of companionway steps. Central vacuum system connection for lower level is in companionway. Accommodations display the same quality and elegant style of the larger Viking Yachts.

The 48C’s open flybridge is a conventional convertible arrangement with centerline helm console set to aft and extended bridge deck for walk around space. Seating is forward of helm console and to either side with plenty of storage under seats. Visibility is excellent all around with clear sightlines to the cockpit. Viking helm features custom navigation electronics packages from subsidiary Atlantic Marine Electronics, under protective clear acrylic covers. Owners can opt for hardtop with built-in electric teaser reel compartment, Palm Beach towers, outriggers, rocket launcher rod holders and more for turn-key delivery.

Hatch in extended bridge aft deck and ladder leads down to mezzanine level of cockpit. The 124 sq ft cockpit which is 2 ft larger than its 46C predecessor, offers standard amenities and equipment for serious fishing—proven over decades of offshore tournaments! Large fish boxes flank an in-deck stowage box that can be plumbed as an extra livewell. Transom livewell lid doubles as cutting board when open and can also be used as a rigging station. Freezer is in observation mezzanine bench seat and a refrigerator is in lower mezzanine step. Drink box is in top salon step.

Portside is another insulated box and a 4-drawer tackle center. Also, standard is a set of flush rod holders, gated transom door with swim steps (swim platform is an option), under gunwale storage for equipment and shore power, water, cable TV & phone connections and oil change pump-out line. As always, Viking offers optional amenities and upgrades, such as a fighting chair (backing plate is built into cockpit sole), and owners can request their own preferences, making each 48 Convertible a semi-custom yacht.

The engine room is accessed by a lift-up hatch in the mezzanine bench seat. Bright white Awlgrip finished engine room benefits from the 17 ft beam with space to maintain and service the engines and surrounding equipment. There’s plenty of space to add an Eskimo ice machine, 700 GPD Sea Recovery watermaker and other optional equipment; space is provided in aft area near transom for a Seakeeper gyrostabilizer. The 48C is equipped with Viking’s centralized seawater system designed with a second in-line back-up pump to allow air-conditioning and other systems to operate during service, simplifying maintenance—no need to shut down entire system. The engine room is expertly engineered for optimal center of gravity, sound dampening, and convenience. MAN V8 diesel engines can be upgraded from 900 or 1000 hp to 1200 hp. Running bottom of modified-V hull deadrise transforms along the chine length from sharp 36-degrees forward to 11.8-degrees at the transom for enhanced performance and efficiency, and the excellent seaworthy dry ride Viking Yachts are known for.

Viking 48 Convertible length overall is 49’1” with a 17’ beam and 4’8” draft. Fuel capacity is 1,190 gals. and water is 178 gals. Gross weight is 66,342 lbs. with standard fuel load.

Viking 48 Convertible

  • By George Sass, Jr.
  • Updated: October 4, 2007

48 viking yacht

The large, throaty MANs purr as the helmsman responds to the long-awaited hail of anglers and backs down the nimble Viking 48 Convertible.

“It’s running deep!”

The enthusiasm of the day’s first bite bubbles over, chasing away the heavy morning haze as we attempt to boat a sizable bluefin tuna. We back down, keeping the cockpit and crew dry.

“Keep some bend in the rod!”

I snap back to reality, realize I have just missed my turn to the New Jersey Turnpike and find myself wandering Cape May.

The trip home to Annapolis after testing the new 48 at Viking’s factory in New Gretna, New Jersey, was filled with flights of imagination and recollections of exciting summertime fishing. This sexy battlewagon is built to create similar memories for anglers who thrill in the fight, and who want to turn as many heads with their boat as they do with their catch.

Viking incorporates subtle touches, such as oval exhaust ports in the transom, a pod with single-lever controls on the bridge and frameless saloon windows to create a soul-capturing convertible that just looks right.

Beyond her pretty face, she is built with quality systems and components. For example, her engineroom is laid out for easy service, taking full advantage of the 16-foot, 6-inch beam. Clearance outboard of the 860 hp MAN diesels is a respectable 25 inches, and there is 2 feet of clearance between the front of the engines and the forward bulkhead. White gelcoat overhead panels and Awlgrip surfaces create a sterile, bright environment enhanced by dual-voltage fluorescent lighting.

Also noteworthy is the wiring, which is labeled every 8 inches. Sure, numbering the wiring works, but I don’t know how many times I’ve gone back to the manual looking for the schematic only to find it long gone or stained with grease from the last sap who tried to read it.

The 48’s engine intakes are mounted abaft the engine and out of the way, without sea strainers. (The air-conditioning pump and generator have them.) My preference is to have sea strainers on the engine intakes, as well, but Viking Director of Communications Peter Frederiksen said they impede engineroom space. Viking has been using external strainers for decades, with no issues, he said. His point is valid if the boat does not sit too long, especially in warmer climates.

This questionable trend of forgoing sea strainers started with a few of the custom yards and is now accepted by some production yards, including Viking. Regardless of which system is on board, maintenance will be required.

The cockpit area is 130 square feet, designed to maximize space and increase fishability. A bait prep station includes five drawers for tackle, a freezer and a fishbox. Two stowage bins flank the fishbox, and one can be equipped as a live well.

A deep lazarette aft stows fenders, buckets and bulky gear. A gas-assist strut or safety strap securing the door when open would keep it from bashing knuckles.

On the flying bridge, the optional custom helm pod with chrome wheel, instrument panel and single-lever controls is a must on the purchase order. Electronics are easily absorbed behind two recessed electronics boxes with clear acrylic panels. Servicing behind these electronics should be easy, thanks to a compartment accessed from the side of the console.

Visibility is good, allowing the helmsman to see back as far as the fourth stanchion. A drink box is to starboard, making the perch perfect for watching baits.

Under way, the 48 felt more like an AWD sportster than a 50,000-pound fishing machine. She punched out of the hole quickly and danced onto a plane around 1350 rpm with no smoke or wallowing.

At maximum rpm, we reached a top speed of just under 36 knots, pushed by twin 860 hp MAN 2840LE407 diesels. Our boat was light on gear, but expect a high cruise speed of 30 knots.

Except for a few large wakes churned up by passing boats, the seas were calm during our test. The 48 did have a nice entry into the few swells. Based on past Viking experiences and the builder’s consistency in design, the hull should perform well when the seas turn up.

Viking’s consistency is also found in the 48’s interior. I was struck by the glowing finish and overall volume. This is a big 48-footer.

The galley can absorb enough supplies for any angler with long-distance aspirations. Sliding drawers with fiddles above the forward counter are a whopping 3 feet deep. There are four Sub-Zero under-counter refrigerator/freezer boxes and space for an optional trash compactor or dishwasher.

I almost did a back flip down the 2-foot-wide passageway when I discovered an apartment-size stack washer and dryer. Trying to dry anything more than a sock and a washcloth in most washer/dryer combination units is as painful as watching Celebrity Fear Factor .

The guest stateroom has sufficient elbowroom for two people to get dressed and walk around. An optional three-stateroom layout is available.

The master has an island berth. The head has a large Corian vanity, an overhead hatch and a separate shower stall.

Viking’s latest convertible is well-built and pleasing to the eye. The builder constantly improves its products and introduces new models, including the recent 52 and now the 48. Many owners are on their third and fourth Vikings.

“Once you’re in the club, you’re in”, Frederiksen said. “It’s all about the experience. He might just be on to something.”

Viking 48C – Boat Review

  • By Capt. Ken Kreisler
  • Updated: May 24, 2016

Viking 48C Boat Review

It’s the mantra of the company, one that permeates every aspect of Viking Yachts : “Build a better boat every day.” From the executive staff to its visionary R&D department and right through to its craftspeople on the line, the company is relentless in its quest to fulfill the needs of its owners and their families.

“When we looked at how we could improve on our popular 46C, we discovered enough to bring out the one we’re on right now,” says Capt. Ryan Higgins, Viking’s Southeast sales manager, at the company’s service center in Riviera Beach, Florida, where the brand-new 48C sat amid her big-sister 80 , 82, and 92C models.

She is one of four new models in this size range: the flybridge convertible; the Sport Coupe with a three-sided hard enclosure; the Sport Tower, a coupe with added tower; and the full express model.

Check out the performance of the Viking 48C HERE .

Viking 48C Boat Review

With a 46C right next to us, it was obvious how much was gained with the extra 2 feet. Foremost, the cockpit length was bumped up to 124 square feet, as was the dedicated space in the sole for a Seakeeper 9 gyrostabilizer, which is almost a standard option now.

“We decided on this location because, eventually, this equipment will need to come out for maintenance,” says Higgins. “Getting it done from here, with the wide open spaces, is a lot easier than trying to remove it from the engine room.”

The fish boxes are laid out fore and aft, with an in-deck livewell already plumbed as an option. The transom livewell has a cutting board in the lid, making it easy for the crew to cut bait or even use as a rigging station. There is a freezer in the mezzanine bench seat, a refrigerator in the lower mezzanine step, a drink box in the salon step and another insulated box to port with a four-drawer tackle center. “This is where it all happens on a fishing boat like this,” says Higgins. “We made sure it happens in the right way once the boat is in the bite.”

Engine Room

Access to the engine room is through the lift-up hatch on the mezzanine bench, and the space presents itself well given the obvious height restriction in a 48-footer. There is plenty of overhead space to do required maintenance, and all critical areas are within easy reach.

Expertly finished and faired off in bright, refrigerator-white Awlgrip, mechanically, there is little difference between the space and equipment aboard the 48C and her immediately larger sisterships. Along with the pair of optional 1,200 hp MAN V8 1200CRM mains, she is equipped with Viking’s centralized seawater system.

This system on the 48C is designed with a second in-line pump as a backup, which allows for air-conditioning and other systems to be left operating during servicing. Simply shut off the pump that you want to service, turn on the other pump and turn off the valve to the pump you are working with. Higgins comments: “With our centralized system, there’s a lot less maintenance. The smoother running bottom, with only two pickups and a pair of strainers, is also a plus. And it’s easy to add on something after the boat is delivered.”

Also present were an Eskimo ice machine, a 700-gallon-per-day Sea Recovery watermaker, Cummins Onan 21.5 kW genset and Dometic air conditioning, making the 48C’s engine room a place with a lot of nicely situated equipment.

Viking 48C Boat Review

This Viking convertible, like all her predecessors, will be tourney-ready. The bridge offers seating forward and to each side with plenty of storage space, as well as an easy-to-navigate centerline helm. A pair of electric teaser reels is readily available in the overhead, and her navigation package includes three Garmin GPSMap 8212 multifunction displays, all in glass-enclosed cabinets.

There is excellent visibility all around and especially aft, with clear sight lines into the cockpit. An optional tower is available from Palm Beach Towers.

Like the bigger boats, the 48C boasts a beautiful walnut interior with all the grains matching, displaying obvious attention to detail. “Working with William Bales, our in-house designer, each interior will be unique, using different wood-grain patterns, for example,” notes Higgins. Also borrowing a design feature from both the 80- and 92-footers is the raised bar top at the end of the island galley. Viking incorporated many features from its bigger boats for this one, including the fluted valances for the main salon’s air conditioning, walnut accents in the headliner, advanced latching systems on the cabinets and the dedicated washer/dryer closet to port in the accommodations hallway below.

Taking full advantage of all the available space, the 48C offers its owners and their guests a three-stateroom, two-head layout, which includes a queen master suite to starboard, forepeak over under and guest quarters opposite the master. I found plenty of available storage space throughout the salon and accommodations below.

Viking 48C Boat Review

Construction

The 48C is built on the same aforementioned principle the company has stood for since its beginnings. To that end, and with its new generation of boats, Viking is constantly improving on its already well-known, sea-tested and proven boatbuilding techniques.

“Newer laminates, cores and materials are constantly being considered, reviewed, tested and then implemented here in-house,” says Dave Wilson, Viking’s engineer and designer who worked on the 48C. “This boat’s running bottom is no different, other than length, than that carrying through on the 52-, 80-, and 92-foot models,” adds Higgins.

“Of course, along with the hull, many of our fiberglass-reinforced parts are now being infused as well,” Wilson says. “Given the speeds of our boats now, we are paying closer attention to the hull structure and always looking to attain that ‘stern-to-bow’ structural grid with as little deviation as possible. This gives her a real backbone.”

Performance

Lucky for me, the wind was blowing hard, the skies were getting low and gray, and the sea was up. Once we cleared the inlet, we were greeted with almost constant 4- to 6-footers on the nose, with a series of occasional bigger ones thrown in to make things really interesting — just the right kind of conditions for the 48C to show off her stuff.

The first thing I noticed was how soft she landed while coming off the approaching seas, how quickly and easily she dealt with the next one — and the next, and the next. In fact, with the Seakeeper 9 spinning away, we could simulate several fishing situations, like backing down, spinning 360s and setting up to do some kite-fishing. And she was equally impressive whether running down or abeam sea. For those of us used to this kind of sea, the Viking 48C made things downright comfortable while offshore.

As far as the bottom shape is concerned, the 48C has 10 equally spaced stations along the chine length, going from 11.8 degrees at the transom to a sharp 36 degrees forward. Together with a properly placed center of gravity, the result is performance and efficiency.

On Viking’s larger boats, the focus is to make them feel as nimble and manageable as something smaller. With the smaller boats, the single-minded endgame is to provide the owner with everything the big boats have. Has that been achieved on the 48C? She’s all that and more.

The centerline helm delivers excellent sightlines, power-assisted hydraulic steering, single lever electronic controls and sophisticated communication, entertainment and navigation electronic systems from Atlantic Marine Electronics to deliver each boat turnkey read.

The Viking 48 Open offers a lush interior that abounds with hand-finished teak joinery and spacious appointments throughout the salon including a flat screen television with surround sound. An L-shape lounge and dinette anchor the area for relaxing, dining and entertaining. To port, the galley is accented with Cambria treatments, under counter refrigeration, a microwave/convection oven and plenty of stowage. Inviting accommodations in two staterooms include a queen-size bed forward with private access to the head. A starboard stateroom has upper and lower berths.

The Viking Yacht Company has led the marine industry since 1964 in all aspects of boat design and construction, committed to producing innovative new yachts on a consistent basis. So it should come as no surprise that for every new Viking introduced, our in-house design and engineering teams have other models waiting for their turn in the spotlight.

Such is the case with our Billfish series. It is with great pride that we introduce our 46 Billfish. "Our history has been to give our owners room to grow within a particular Viking family of boats, whether you’re talking about our convertibles, our open express and sport boats or our motor yachts,” says Viking Design Manager David Wilson. “Now we’re simply following through with this type of product growth and diversity with the Billfish. We’re extremely excited, and are sure these boats will meet and exceed all expectations."

“Our history has been to give our owners room to grow within a particular Viking family of boats, whether you’re talking about our convertibles, our open express and sport boats or our motor yachts,” says Viking Design Manager David Wilson. “Now we’re simply following through with this type of product growth and diversity with the Billfish. We’re extremely excited, and are sure these boats will meet and exceed all expectations.”

The 46 BF will excel as either an owner/operator or captained Viking. Offering simplicity and ease of maintenance, she’s a ready-to-go fishing machine equipped for inshore and offshore missions as well as a versatile cruising boat with reliable inboard diesel power.

Cockpit & Command Deck

The 140-square-foot cockpit has room for the entire crew or family. The cockpit sole is built with a laminated in-deck mounting plate for fighting chair, rocket launcher or table installations. Standard equipment and features include a cockpit bait freezer with upper tray, in-deck insulated fish boxes port and starboard with overboard drainage, a walk-through transom door and lift gate, a transom fish box and live well, rod holders, tackle storage and fresh and sea-water wash downs. Two-person, mezzanine-style seats flank the centerline walkthrough, and there’s refrigerated drink storage in the starboard mezzanine step, as well as ample general stowage throughout.

The 46 Billfish’s command deck can be completely enclosed and is climate-controlled. “It’s perfect for anglers who want to get off their feet and cool down as the boat moves from one spot to the next,” says David. The command deck features a salon-like living area with a roomy U-shaped lounge and hi-lo table and a lounge that extends along the starboard side. Both seating areas hold rod storage underneath.

Like our legendary Viking convertibles, the 46 Billfish’s flybridge is designed with a tournament-style center console walk-around helm. The 46 Billfish has Palm Beach-style controls and power-assist hydraulic steering. Seating includes a single Release Marine teak chair (a second helm chair is optional) and lounges to port and starboard and a forward console seat. Our subsidiary Atlantic Marine Electronics can build and install a complete package of navigation and communication equipment to deliver the boat turnkey ready.

Accommodations

Rest up and recharge in the 46 Billfish’s air-conditioned cabin. Featuring high-gloss teak cabinetry and custom Amtico flooring, the fully appointed starboard-side galley has an L-shaped Corian countertop, a two-burner electric stove, a microwave/convection oven, cabinet storage and under-counter drawer-style refrigeration with a built-in ice maker. The private head, which is conveniently located immediately to port of the companionway stairs, has a large walk-in shower with satin nickel fixtures, an attractive Corian-topped vanity with sink and storage and a medicine cabinet with mirrored doors. Easily accessible upper and lower bunks on the port side await weary anglers, and there’s a hanging locker only a few steps away. The first-class accommodations continue in the private forward stateroom, with its island queen bed, a hanging locker, upper storage cabinetry and a flat-screen TV with stereo, speakers and DVD player.

Efficient and Durable

As Viking continues to develop the Billfish series, our building methods and materials have gained efficiency, which adds even more value to these boats. A modified vinylester resin is used in the entire hull skin. End-grain balsa and closed-cell foam are used as coring materials in selected areas for optimized strength and stiffness while minimizing weight. The integral fiberglass fuel tank, sealed to the hull with resin foam, is resin infused with balsa coring on all sides for stiffness. The hull-to-deck joint is mechanically fastened every three inches and fiberglassed inside.

Viking Engineering

The Billfish is designed and built with many of the same mechanical systems, components and technologies found on larger Vikings. Examples include the Delta-T engineroom ventilation system and a fire suppression system that’s automatically or manually operated and tied into the main engine and generator ignitions.

Running gear includes Class “S” pitch tolerance propellers with dynamic balancing and bronze struts, seacocks and rudders.

The engineroom, lazarette and forward bilges are painted with Snow White Awlgrip for increased visibility and ease of maintenance. A large centerline hatch gives you quick access to the engines and optional Seakeeper SK 6 gyro. Twin Cummins QSM11 715MHP diesels provide the standard power for the 46 Billfish, while twin MAN I6-800 CRM 800MHP are optional.

  13. Keep Your Options Open: Viking 48 Open

The Viking 48 Open is an easy-to-cruise, wash-and-wear, gentleman's sport-fisher with a serious pedigree. By Kevin Koenig. Updated: June 19, 2017. This yacht's hull has enough flare to shrug off most any sea, and her running strakes help keep her on the straight and narrow. Courtesy Viking.

  14. Viking 48 Convertible

Our boat was light on gear, but expect a high cruise speed of 30 knots. Except for a few large wakes churned up by passing boats, the seas were calm during our test. The 48 did have a nice entry into the few swells. Based on past Viking experiences and the builder's consistency in design, the hull should perform well when the seas turn up.
