Boat of the Week: This Modern 151-Foot Superyacht Looks Like It’s Straight Out of ‘The Great Gatsby’

Nadan is a thoroughly modern superyacht, built in 2009, but looks like a 1920s raconteur. we step aboard., howard walker, howard walker's most recent stories.

“There’s not a harbor or port in the world where Nadan wouldn’t spin heads and drop jaws,” Captain Andy Lytle told Robb Report during a tour of the yacht at this year’s Palm Beach International Boat Show.

Nadan is a 151-foot classic style that was built by Burger Boat Company in 2009. It has a stunning wooden interior but mostly modern amenities.

The yacht was originally designed to cruise the low-bridge canals and rivers of the Eastern Seaboard, so she was given a slightly-unusual low-profile look. That changed when the yacht was sold in 2017 and renamed Nadan .

The new buyer, automotive engineer and philanthropist Klaus Bytzek, reportedly wasn’t happy with the low-profile look—he’s said to have likened the lines to a wedding cake lacking a top layer—so he sent it to Fort Lauderdale for a refit.

Bytzek commissioned Freivokh to add a tall-windowed, varnished wood “wheelhouse” on the top deck to give the yacht back its elegant proportions and regain a sense of balance. But instead of making it a proper wheelhouse with a wheel, Bytzek turned it into his “man cave”—though that 2000s term is less apt than what eventually looked like Jay Gatsby’s den.

Bytzek filled it with a velvet sofa, comfy side chairs, a full-width desk with elegant Tiffany lamps, and in a single modern nod, a big-screen TV. “It’s just the greatest place to get away from it all, enjoy some privacy and personal space away from guests,” says Lytle.

“ Nadan is a yacht that has had three great owners who’ve had the passion and the means to maintain her in perfect condition,” says Edmiston yacht brokerage director, Bruce Brakenhoff.

Why is the current owner selling? Brakenhoff explains the yachtsman has a new, bigger sailboat under construction, and three yachts is one too many. “Right now, she’s in magnificent condition with a turnkey crew, and ready to go,” he added.

With a draft of just six feet, Nadan is perfectly suited to cruising the skinny waters of the Bahamas where she’s been spending the winter months, before typically heading north to Maine for the summer.

Powered by a pair of 600-horsepower Caterpillar C18 diesels, the all-aluminum vessel has a friendly cruise speed of around 12 knots, with a top end of 14. With its 4,300-gallon fuel capacity, range is around 2,400 nautical miles at 10 knots.

“She has a fairly slender hull—the beam is just 26 feet—but she moves through the water beautifully, creating less than a foot of wake at cruising speed,” says Lytle. “When she was built, there was a real focus on reducing noise and vibration. She’s eerily quiet on the move.”

That relatively narrow hull does mean compromises when it comes to interior space, compared to more modern designs, though Lytle likens the interior to that of a classic sailing yacht. The cozy main salon features Art Deco-style sofas, and a stylish bar with ’20s-style chrome stools. That leads into a formal, wood-paneled dining room. Glass doors open out on to a drop-down terrace that’s perfect for a post-dinner Old Fashioned.

Outside entertaining spaces include a sizable aft deck with twin U-shaped lounges under shade, plus a lovely wraparound sofa above the fantail stern. On the top deck are sunpads in front of the new wheelhouse, and a hot tub, dining table, bar and outdoor kitchen behind.

Who will be the next owner? “Likely someone who buys with their heart rather than their head,” says Brakenhoff. “Someone maybe making the move from sail to power. But it will be someone looking for a unique, very special yacht.” The vessel is listed with Edmiston for $22.5 million.

The Decadence: a Futuristic 80m Art Deco Yacht

Decadence Yacht, a concept 80m superyacht with art deco style.

Andy Waugh Yacht Design has unveiled its latest innovative creation, the Decadence, an 80-meter catamaran concept that pushes the boundaries of design and engineering. Drawing inspiration from the advancements in the automotive and aeronautical industries of the 1920s, the Decadence aims to capture the spirit of that era while introducing new and exciting possibilities to the luxury superyacht sector.

art deco yacht

One of the standout features of the Decadence is its employment of the SWATH hull form, which stands for “small-waterplane-area-twin-hull.” This design incorporates submerged cylindrical hulls connected to a central body by stilts, offering unique aesthetic possibilities that have yet to be fully explored in the superyacht industry. In addition to its striking appearance, the futuristic hull design brings several technical benefits, including an estimated 70 percent reduction in pitch and roll movements compared to traditional monohull superyachts. This advancement enhances comfort and safety for passengers while at sea.

With a beam measuring 30 meters, the Decadence boasts expansive interior spaces. The owner’s suite alone could span an impressive 20 meters in width, 30 meters in length, and 3 meters in height. Each deck will feature fully enclosable exterior areas, providing privacy and protection from adverse weather conditions. The ingenious placement of crew and technical areas in the sponsons and outer hulls creates additional space in the main superstructure for guests to enjoy.

However, the increased beam of the yacht does present challenges when it comes to finding suitable marina berths. To address this concern, Andy Waugh Yacht Design has implemented multiple solutions. The enhanced stability of the hull design eliminates the need for seeking shelter from inclement weather conditions, reducing the reliance on specific marinas. Furthermore, the Decadence includes space for two 14-meter chase-boat tenders from Skyline Yachts, which can serve as transfer shuttles to shore, providing added convenience and flexibility.

Renderings of the Decadence also reveal retractable inflatable sails, indicating the potential integration of wind power into the yacht’s propulsion system. Moreover, the design studio has promised a “radical new propulsion system” that is anticipated to reduce energy consumption by approximately 30 percent, showcasing their commitment to sustainable yachting.

Andy Waugh Yacht Design has gained a reputation for pushing boundaries with its visionary yacht concepts. The studio’s portfolio includes remarkable projects like the 70-meter Serafina, 175-meter Acionna, 45-meter Revolution, and 90-meter Nouveau. In addition to the Decadence, the design firm is currently working on a 100-meter-plus project for an American tech mogul, which is currently in the engineering phase at Dorries Yachts in Bremen, Germany.

The Decadence concept represents a bold step forward in yacht design, blending the elegance of the past with cutting-edge innovations. Andy Waugh Yacht Design’s commitment to pushing the limits of what is possible in the luxury superyacht sector is evident in this visionary concept, showcasing their dedication to creating exceptional and forward-thinking vessels for the future.

What’s Inside This New York Inspired Art Deco Superyacht?

Natalie Stoclet

New York has been the source of inspiration for many incredible projects. From movies to poetry and art, it was only a matter of time before New York became the inspiration for something slightly larger. Something likes a 295-foot mega-yacht, perhaps.

Architectural Digest went behind-the-scenes with Andrew Winch of Winch Designs to scope out the New York inspired Phoenix² yacht. Winch was able to draw inspiration from the city’s most iconic landmarks like the Chrysler Building and Radio City Music Hall to curate a style that was as much Art Deco as it was New York. The yacht’s anonymous owner has now commissioned Winch Designs for the second time, the first being for the original 197-foot Phoenix in 2004.

The moment you lay eyes on Phoenix² you know that it is no ordinary vessel. The inside however, is as or if not more impressive than the grandiose exterior. The entryway alone possesses a five-ton, 18-foot figurehead of a phoenix. Andrew Winch told Architectural Digest , “The owner is drawn to the power and charisma of New York’s skyscrapers… “He wanted the bow of the yacht to include a phoenix because, metaphorically, the phoenix rises to soaring heights much as skyscrapers do.”

Beyond tasteful Art Deco accents, the Phoenix² has a whole host of haute amenities. Inside the building-sized boat you can expect to encounter a private office, Jacuzzi, numerous bedrooms and a private suite with 180-degree views of the sea. “Each section of space, from the dining room to the stairwells, needed to meet a high level of expectations,” says Winch to Architectural Digest . Yet again, Winch Designs was able to bring a little flare of the 1920s back in a big way.

Inside an $35 Million Art Deco Superyacht Reportedly Owned by a Prince

Superyacht sailing in the ocean overcast day

For $35 million, you can own a piece of royal history. This superyacht’s most recent owner, r eportedly the Crown Prince of Dubai , Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, recently listed the floating palace for sale through Worth Avenue Yachts .

Shot from inside looking out on the deck of a yacht

The ship has plenty of room for outdoor living.

Named Dubawi the vessel was built in 1989 by Cantiere Navale Ferrari. However, for the first half of its nautical life, it was used as a cruise ship. Once the current owner acquired it in 2009, the ship was renovated by Platinum Yachts into a private superyacht. Since undergoing a two-year, multimillion-dollar refit, the boat has notably only had one owner, a rare feature for a ship of this size and class. Because of this, few people other than those invited on board have been able to see the inside, making the boat one of the most private of its category.

Curved hallway with orange and red geometric painted floors

Geometric decor is present throughout the yacht.

Sailing at more than 297 feet long, the massive vessel has 22 staterooms, can sleep 44 people, has a gross tonnage of 4,184, and a volume similar to that of 110-meter yacht. It’s tremendous size leaves plenty of room for luxurious amenities, including a nightclub with a lighted dance floor, a guest lounge, two salons, an elevator, a fountain, a swimming platform, a hospital room, and a private owner’s deck with 180-degree views and a jacuzzi.

Night club in a yacht. Overhead lights are off with purple and green beam lights

The fully equipped nightclub is on the lower deck.

Though the yacht’s features are no doubt impressive, they’re not necessarily unusual for a vessel of this category. However, the Art Deco interior design and decor of the space, full of rich purples, blues, greens, and oranges, is something you don’t see everyday. In addition to the vibrant hues, the ship is also full of geometric patterns and stately furniture.

Seating area below deck in a yacht

Purple motifs, often associated with royalty, are common throughout the yacht.

15 Vertical Garden Ideas, From Living Walls to Botanical Libraries

The interiors were designed by Platinum Yacht’s in-house interior design team, who made use of a large selection of materials including marble, rare woods, mosaic tiling, and custom-made carpets.

Image of the inside of a boat with bright carpets and a long dining table

The boat can sleep 44 people, and this dining area ensures there’s room for all of them to eat.

And if the yacht’s layout isn’t exactly what the new owner desires, there is plenty of square footage in both of the salons to rearrange the space to include new features like a game room or theater. Whether cosmetic upgrades happen or not, the ship underwent various maintenance checks before being put on the market to ensure it’s smooth sailing when handed over to the whoever acquires it next.

The space is truly fit for royalty.

Arriving at the marina in a superyacht says precisely nothing about you, other than the size of your bank account. Unless you arrive in this superyacht , which is a contender not just for the most stylish boat in the world, but the most stylish thing in the world.

The first thing you'll notice is that the Malahne looks a bit different to the rest of the bleach-white flotilla trudging up and down the Côte d'Azur. That's because it's older. Lots older. Launched in 1937, it was originally commissioned by Yorkshire-born retailer William Lawrence Stephenson, who ran the British arm of FW Woolworth (aka Woolworth's) and cruised the Med in 1937 and ’38.

It passed through a few owners before arriving with legendary Hollywood producer Sam Spiegel, who bought it as a floating office while filming Lawrence of Arabia in Jordan. After it retired from its filming duties, Spiegel entertained Grace Kelly, Frank Sinatra and Elizabeth Taylor aboard the Malahne, and even used it as a set for 1973 murder mystery The Last of Sheila , which starring Dyan Cannon, James Coburn, James Mason and Raquel Welch. Come 1983 it fell into the hands of Saudi Sheikh Adel Al Mojil, who changed it beyond recognition with a new superstructure and interior.

Image may contain Wood Bronze Art Sculpture Figurine Building and Flooring

Yacht broker, Nicholas Edmiston, chairman of the firm bearing his name, had followed Malahne with interest and eventually secured the yacht in 2009 with a view to completely restoring it to 1937 spec. However, Sheikh Adel Al Mojil's alterations were thoroughgoing, and it required the expertise of restorers Pendennis Shipyard in Cornwall to bring it back to life, and add a few 21st century comforts.

While Pendennis worked on recreating its stunning hull, a vast number of experts were drafted in to accurately recreate the thirties. London-based Guy Oliver, who designed the state rooms at Number 10 Downing Street and created the interiors of the Connaught hotel and Claridge’s, was set to work inside while classic yacht experts, GL Watson & Co, reworked the exterior to look as original as possible but still perform like a modern vessel.

Only six years after she came to Pendennis and underwent her epic two-and-a-half-year transformation, this is the result. A stunning tribute to Thirties style and British craftsmanship, which was recognised earlier this month as Pendennis Shipyard won "best rebuild" project at the World Superyacht Awards on Florence. Sinatra would tip his hat.

Elizabeth Taylor, Grace Kelly, and Frank Sinatra have all had the pleasure of staying on this art deco superyacht. Thankfully, it has been completely restored to the splendor of the 1930s and is available for charter rentals. About Malahne

The Malahn was originally launched in 1937 by Yorkshire-born retailer William Lawrence Stephenson, who ran the British arm of FW Woolworth. Before being acquired by renowned Hollywood producer Sam Spiegel, it had a number of owners. Spiegel used it as a floating office while Lawrence of Arabia was being filmed in Jordan. The Malahne served as the setting for the 1973 murder mystery The Last of Sheila, which starred Dyan Cannon, James Coburn, James Mason, and Raquel Welch, as well as providing entertainment for Grace Kelly, Frank Sinatra, and Elizabeth Taylor while Spiegel was no longer in use for filming.

Restoring the Superyacht

The Pendennis Shipyard in Cornwall was enlisted to restore the Malahne to its original state while maintaining modern conveniences. The outcome, just six years after she arrived in Pendennis and underwent her remarkable two-and-a-half-year transformation is astonishing. A beautiful homage to British craftsmanship and Thirties style, Pendennis Shipyard was honored earlier this month when it won the “best rebuild” project at the World Superyacht Awards in Florence.

Artwork on Here Comes the Sun

Buyer's guide: How to create the ultimate superyacht art collection

Whether you want to commission new art pieces for your superyacht or keep existing works pristine, Claire Wrathall gives you the lowdown

"I don’t believe in art on the high seas,” art dealer and Hollywood producer Arne Glimcher once told me. The founder of Pace Gallery, which deals in works by the likes of Picasso and Rothko, and former owner of the 37-metre Luca Brenta -designed Vitters yacht Ghost , Glimcher loves sailing and art, but believes some passions are best kept separate. “It would have been dangerous to have works of art on board, absolutely irresponsible. I like to be able to have the hatches open and fresh air in the boat.”

Protect your art from salt, humidity and temperature extremes by displaying it in parts of the yacht where the elements can be shut out, however, and there’s no reason superyachts can’t be as safe as galleries. “If you’re inside and you don’t feel too cold or too hot, then the art will be fine too,” says London-based dealer Adrian Sassoon. Just as on land, the main problems are direct sunlight and clumsiness. The former will damage photographs, watercolours and other works on paper, though UV-resistant glass, blinds and judicious placement can mitigate this.

But there are many more robust media. With metalwork or ceramics, says Sassoon, “the work should retain the same strength and depth of colours it would have had when it left the kiln”. As to the risk of knocking something over, small sculptures and objets d’art may actually be safer on a yacht, because in a marine environment they are invariably stuck down with “museum glue” that adheres objects to surfaces to stop them shifting in a swell.

Perhaps it’s not surprising then that remarkable assemblages of art are kept aboard yachts to no detrimental effect. When in 2018 David Hockney’s acrylic-on-canvas Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures) sold for $90.3 million (£69m), at the time the most a work by a living artist had ever fetched, the fact that it had previously hung among a collection of valuable paintings on Aviva , the 68-metre superyacht belonging to the businessman Joe Lewis, had clearly done it no harm.

Some collectors commission boats to reflect their art. “I actually designed [ Sea Force One ] around my pieces,” the hedge fund manager Raffaele Costa told me of his 53-metre yacht, when she was refitted in 2013. “Art should be an integral part of any design.” Others customise their art to fit their yachts. The Hamburg-based art adviser Tilman Kriesel is a fund of such tales: the Rothko fixed horizontally rather than vertically as the artist intended; or, worse, the Takashi Murakami, likely to have been worth at least seven figures intact, that was cut to size to fit on a wall in a yacht’s beach club.

Too often decisions about the art are taken at the end of the process and not at the beginning, says Sassoon. “An art collection is naturally an accumulation, not the result of a single shopping trip. And variety is really important.” That said, “most commonly it’s the designers who end up choosing the artwork”, says  Selina McCabe, a partner at Winch Design . Buying or “commissioning pieces of art is an exciting part of the process”. Especially works for spaces that have been designed to be multifunctional, in which case “the art needs to be easily movable depending on how the space is used”, and appropriate wall finishes can be specified accordingly.

Others, like Rémi Tessier , designer of Nahlin and Vava II , insist contractually on oversight of the art lest an owner’s taste “ruin [my] reputation among art collectors. I would not work for a person who just put whatever on the wall.”

Mark Berryman , a specialist in contemporary yacht interiors , takes a more pragmatic view. “Personally, I absolutely love abstract art,” he says. “So whenever I’m designing, I always have in mind the art that I would put in there if it was my interior.” But there’s no second-guessing a client’s taste, and it may be that “what they’ve got in mind is something very classical, or a Klimt. It’s a personal taste until you broach the subject, it really is an unknown. We’ve done a couple of refits where the client has asked for landscapes and very representational work, and sometimes that just doesn’t sit well on a boat in the middle of the ocean. It can feel a little jarring.”

He, too, believes it is best to begin with the art. Too often it’s treated as an afterthought and left till the end of the process. “You can still make it work,” he says. “But it becomes much more difficult if you then decide to commission half a dozen pieces.”

When he designed the refit of Indian Empress (now H ), for example, “the client already had a lot of art on board, and it was great, but the interior was really shouting at it. They were completely different styles.” The art was modern and contemporary, much of it Indian. The yacht was very traditional. And the owner knew it wasn’t working. “He said. ‘You decide where it fits best, but I do want to use it all.’”

Berryman also points to the interiors of Mary-Jean II , which were to some extent influenced by its owner’s collection of pop art, notably Warhol. “We’d seen the collection in their houses and in storage, so we knew what they wanted to use and went for something very contemporary,” to showcase it the better.

But existing collections aren’t always suitable for yachts. “Steer clear of works incorporating ivory or coral or other natural materials on the CITES [Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora] endangered list,” warns Sassoon, because they may cause your captain grief as the yacht travels into certain jurisdictions and, worse, risk confiscation. So be wary of Damien Hirst’s butterfly collages and leave the Polly Morgan snakes at home. Works incorporating taxidermy, even seashells, can be a red flag to customs officials.

One way to obviate any such issue is commission the art from scratch, hence companies such as DKT Artworks . Founded by three art-school alumni and employing about 40 highly skilled craftspeople,  it creates and fabricates everything from mosaics to faux-art deco bas-reliefs, contemporary lightbox installations and trompe-l’oeil murals. Its work can be found on yachts such as DAR , Dilbar , Excellence , Here Comes the Sun , Kismet , Luna and Tis .

If you tire of them, you won’t easily  be able to sell them on the secondary market – but DKT Artworks’ carved and relief panels are, says marketing chief Guglielmo Carrozzo, “very popular at the moment, especially for staircases, [which are] one of the few places on a vessel where you can see what’s going on on different decks”. A bas-relief can be a way of bringing everything together, he says. Commissioning a work means it can not only reflect the owners’ taste, but be sized to fill a specific space.

The Czech glass and crystal design company Preciosa is another translator of ideas into fully realised statements of artistry. Take the 11.2-metre chandelier designed by Seattle-based Susan Young, to evoke bubbles rising to the surface, that it made for Aquila when the 85-metre yacht was refitted by Pendennis in 2016. Descending through four storeys through the yacht’s central spiral staircase, it incorporates more than 850 individually blown-glass pieces.

Few materials can conjure the idea of water as effectively as glass, hence the sculptures produced by Lasvit, another long-established Czech company. Its works can be found on superyachts such as the 77-metre Turquoise Go , for which Lasvit’s Katarína Kudějová Fulínová created an installation of 378 hand-blown crystal rods, each containing its own light source, that when illuminated conjure an image of undulating seagrass on the ceiling above. Inspired by nature but abstract in form, it’s a working light fitting, but also, she hopes, a creation that “opens space for our imagination and functions as a window into our subconscious”. And ultimately, isn’t that the purpose of art?

Art Deco emerged as a popular style of American architecture the 1920s and 1930s. The style originated as a visual art movement in France at the beginning of the 20th Century. It was widely seen at the 1925 Paris exposition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts and the 1933-1934 Century of Progress Exposition in Chicago. Art Deco architecture, sculpture, decorative arts and functional objects all flourished in the United States during this time.

While Art Deco designs vary widely, buildings are often characterized by:

  • Vertical lines
  • Building setbacks
  • Terra cotta
  • Bright colors
  • Abstract geometric ornamentation
