The sailing yacht from BAVARIA YACHTS

A BAVARIA yacht is the perfect interaction of many elements. Everything is built around the extensive expertise of German engineering. It is an art that looks back on a long and successful tradition in boat building. Today it is possible to implement all this knowledge with a high degree of precision and quality. We make use of the best materials, the best equipment and exquisite craftsmanship to create something that is the essence of every BAVARIA: the joy of yachting.

With the BAVARIA C46 BAVARIA YACHTS sets a new milestone of their sailing yachts of the C-LINE. A variety of combinable cabin options below deck and a deck layout for single-handed sailors and skippers with a large crew make a BAVARIA C46 your very own C46. Experience the world premiere of BAVARIA YACHTS now at the major boat shows in Europe.

Our aim was to make the BAVARIA C50 nothing less than a new benchmark in the 50-foot sailing yacht category. It offers an elegant, flat hull line and stunningly dynamic silhouette. Everything is clear and minimalist, reflecting our understanding of good, modern yacht design. No other yacht offers so much space, so much comfort and so many possibilities.

The jury said: “European Yacht of the Year 2015”. We say: that comes as no surprise! That is because you would be hard pressed to find another sailing yacht in its class that offers more space, more comfort, more luxury if you want it, and is also this easy to handle.

Experience the pure joy of yachting.

The fascination of sailing.

We give our very best every day so that you can enjoy the most beautiful moments on the water. Sailing is the epitome of lightness and is synonymous with letting yourself drift. These feelings are at the centre of the design and construction of our exclusive sailing boats and yachts. We spare no effort and regularly put everything to the test so that you can glide across the water without a care in the world.

A sailing yacht with comfort and individuality for every type of sailor

BAVARIA YACHTS is one of the most modern manufacturers of sailing yachts in the world. Our shipyard in Giebelstadt, Franconia, produces exclusive yachts for discerning customers. Around 700 employees produce sailing and motor yachts there every day.

Our portfolio leaves nothing to be desired: The BAVARIA C-LINE and CRUISER LINE sailing yacht series offer the right model for every sailor with customised configuration options. We also offer a wide range of motorboats for the highest demands at sea.

Solid wood and yet light on board

More than 45 years of experience in boat building go into the woodworking for the construction of our sailing yachts. Although modern machines make it easier for the boat builders to work in our in-house joinery, their judgement and expertise in working with different types of wood remain the most important tools. Mahogany, teak, oak or walnut, our boats offer individuality and a feel-good ambience.

And every sailing yacht contains the perfect balance of solid wood and robust laminates. The weight of the interior fittings also contributes to the solid sea behaviour and excellent sailing characteristics that characterise every sailing boat from our shipyard in Giebelstadt.

Sandwich construction for a long life of the sailing yacht

Isophthalic acid resins in the outer layers, which are used during lamination, ensure the highest quality in the hulls of our boats. They provide effective protection against osmosis and thus ensure the longevity of your sailing boat or motorboat.

The hull and deck of a BAVARIA consist of a sandwich construction with foam inserts. On sailing yachts, they are reinforced with aluminium plates where fittings are mounted. At the "wedding", the deck and hull are screwed and glued together, the most beautiful moment for us as a manufacturer - and the first step towards the finished yacht.

bavaria yacht factory

Unrivalled precision for outstanding sailing yacht quality

Mast foot, cleats, blocks, winches, railing supports, cockpit windows, hatches, etc: More than 40 items belong on the deck and in the cockpit of every BAVARIA. An efficient layout is an absolute must. To ensure that every piece of equipment is in the perfect place, we combine the many years of experience of our product managers, designers and boat builders with the precision of modern CAD/CAM software. This enables the exact planning, development and production of prototypes, finished products and smooth production processes. Later, when building the deck, aluminium plates are incorporated into the sandwich construction at key points in order to achieve above-average stability.

Computer-controlled milling machines and drills are used during production exactly where the product team has previously specified - to the millimetre. The millimetre-precise execution of milling and drilling determines the subsequent tightness. In order to be able to carry out this elementary work with consistently high quality, we had our own CNC system developed years ago, which is unrivalled in the yacht and boat building industry to date.

Inside the Bavaria factory

St editor sam fortescue goes on a tour inside the bavaria factory, which makes 1,000 boats a year.

Bavaria factory

Even back then, industrialisation was key to the business. A large purpose-built hangar housed hull after hull, busy with workers. As Bavaria CEO Lutz Henkel tells me: “Herrman was the Henry Ford of boatbuilding”.

Today, automation and process are the beating heart of Bavaria, and the 70,000m 2 halls of Bavaria Yachtbau, which turns out over 1,000 boats per year with the input of workers from 14 different countries, resembles none other that I have ever visited. The first thing I see is a row of bikes, which Bavaria’s 600 production workers use to save valuable minutes getting around the factory.

Bavaria’s output has fallen from its 2007 peak of 3,000 boats per year. But it’s not all spare capacity – the boats take longer to complete now.

Bavaria CEO Lutz Henkel explains: “I would say that we are nearly at the same capacity as before – it’s just that our boats are more complicated.

“They have a wider variety of interiors now, whereas before it was ‘take it or leave it’.”

Within a year, all Bavaria boats will be manufactured using vacuum infusion.

Production line

An unbroken production line stretches from the moulding hall through fit out to finishing, each boat on a wheeled cradle which moves from station to station on narrow railway tracks.

Machine-operated

One of the two five-axis milling machines hard at work cutting out ports, hatches and holes for fittings.

A fortnight's build

It takes just two weeks to get a Cruiser 46 gets from being just tubs of epoxy and boxes of screws to a gleaming, finished article.

Changes in processes and options have led to more premium products. A decade ago, the yard’s entry-level Cruiser 33 cost €65,000 (£51,000) ex-VAT; today, the new 34 starts at €89,000 (£70,000).

Laying up the hulls

Laying up is still a very manual task at Bavaria. It is the job of one man to dunk precut strips of glass mat in epoxy resin before they’re collected by colleagues in hazard suits and respirators. They swarm all over the mould with rollers and and in this way, it takes just a day to lay up each hull or deck before it is gently cooked at 60° in a large oven.

Interview / Bavaria Yachts : "The company deserves clear choices and a constant course"

Marc Diening, CEO of Bavaria Yachts

Marc Diening, the new managing director of Bavaria Yachts, talks to BoatIndustry about the situation of the German shipyard and his ambitions for the sail and powerboat manufacturer.

Briag Merlet

Arriving at the beginning of August 2021 at the head of Bavaria Yachts, the new CEO of the German shipyard Marc Diening took advantage of the Cannes boat show to meet with the boating industry and discuss the company's situation. BoatIndustry asked him about his ambitions for the company.

What is the dynamic of Bavaria Yachts today, after the pandemic and the crisis the company went through after the bankruptcy in 2018?

There is a real return of confidence and growth. We expect an increase of 15 to 20%, to reach a number of boats between 650 and 700 units. Our suppliers have regained confidence and we have returned to normal payment terms. Like many other companies, our problem is more the capacity to deliver the boats. The lead time is now 12 months. Demand is strong and we sometimes have difficulty obtaining the engines.

From a jobs perspective, we are back to a good level.

L'usine Bavaria Yachts a repris un rythme industriel

What is the split between the sailboat and powerboat ranges? What are the next developments?

Today sales are divided between 2/3 sailing boats and 1/3 motor boats. Therefore, as we have just launched 2 sailing boats, the next one will be a motor boat. Details will be revealed in the fall for a presentation at the Boot Düsseldorf .

The Nautitech catamaran shipyard , which is part of the Bavaria Group, has refocused on the owner's market, to the detriment of charter . Is there an equivalent strategy for Bavaria Yachts with regard to charter?

No. The companies are different. Charter has always been very important for Bavaria. We will continue to work in this sector.

Le Bavaria C38 vise également la location de bateaux

How does Bavaria position itself with regard to environmental issues in the propulsion and construction of boats?

There is a structural change going on. It's important to really think about what the real needs of customers are, what the trends and demands are. I arrived at my position only a few weeks ago. We will surely join the trend. But the company deserves clear choices and consistency. It has seen many changes of course in the past.

Bavaria Yachts

“german engineered, sailor inspired”.

Hidden away in Northern Bavaria, miles away from any major body of water, is the largest boatbuilding facility in the world. Since 1979, Bavaria has been leading the way in boating engineering and craftsmanship. In 2008 Bavaria Yachts built over 2,000 boats, each craft made to order, using the most innovative production line in boatbuilding.

The Dream Factory

Building out boats beam-to-beam rather than bow-to-stern, means Bavaria can fit 31 stations on the assembly line, with fewer functions at any one station. This limits overcrowding and prevents any installation problems. This way of assembly also means that a Bavaria 31 and a Bavaria 50 can be produced on the same production line.

Cutouts for hatches, drilling and taping for would normally take two Bavaria employees four hours. A robotic CNC machine can do it all in 20 minutes - with improved accuracy.

Hull and deck lamination is still completed by hand, but the Bavaria factory’s chain drive mold movement system allows drying ovens and molds to be rotated on their cradles, reducing labour time.

Cruiser Series

German boat builders pride themselves on the unique individuality of the crafts they build. If you’re looking for a boat which is unique, robust and beautiful then you should definitely consider a Bavaria cruiser.

A Bavaria cruiser is a steady performer, reinforcing a reputation for yacht building with amazing results. All lines on a Bavaria cruiser are led to the cockpit for easy sail handling. The newly restyled Cruiser series offers a large salon illuminated by skylights and fixed hull ports. The placement of numerous opening ports and hatches offer a natural cross ventilation.

The Bavaria 34 Cruiser is 35 feet and offers increased interior volume which creates a large entertaining area. A generous L-shaped galley, navigation table, large cabins and lots of natural light and ventilation all contribute to liveable yacht below deck.

With the 55 Cruiser, Bavaria have conjured up the epitome of superior design and technology with style and function. Featuring the performance and design that is Bavaria.

Vision Series

Bavaria's new vision offers increased standard equipment, added speed potential by way of new hull designs, a ballast ratio above 35% and increased sail areas.

For cruising comfort, standard features include large galleys, stylish side windows, a vast amount of storage, solar-powered stainless steel vents, spinnaker winches and dual steering wheels. Bavaria’s vision deck salon series symbolises the features that make Bavaria Yachts the fastest growing sailboat manufacturer in the world.

Comfort and space are two of the ingredients which make the Bavaria 40 vision the best of both worlds. The well proportioned sail plan allows for increased performance and stability which translates into a sailing experience not often found in a production cruising boat.

The flagship of the Vision series, the Bavaria 50 Vision does not disappoint. Rugged yet elegant, the 50 Vision will meet the needs of the most demanding sailor. Yet another example of Bavaria technology exceeding expectations.

Sailboat Review: Bavaria C38

  • By Mark Pillsbury
  • April 20, 2022

Bavaria C38

For the past several years, practically all of the design surprises that have caught my eye on new sailboats have been abaft the mast. In no particular order, these innovative features include hull chines, twin rudders, pop-up TVs, house-style refrigerators, galleys forward in the saloon, sinks and grills on the stern, sun beds between a monohull’s twin wheels, and lounges on the coachroof to either side of the companionway. Some of these make the boat sail better, while others make it a more comfortable place to enjoy life on the water.

But this past fall, it was the pointy end—or, should I say, the not-so-pointy end—of the Bavaria C38 that stood out. It made an impression from above, as I looked across the broad foredeck, and down below, where the builder’s in-house team and Cossutti Yacht Design somehow found a way to install a king-size berth in the owner’s stateroom, while still leaving room for a hanging locker and a head-and-shower compartment, all forward of the mast.

For a decade or more, even as beam measurement amidships has steadily increased and been carried aft to allow for ever more spacious twin staterooms, most boats still have been built with a bow that’s shaped like an arrow point. The Bavaria V-bow, as the company calls it, has a more radial shape and hullsides that flare out above the waterline, creating all that living space in the interior.

In a briefing with CW ’s Boat of the Year judges, a company representative described the 38 as a family coastal cruiser. I thought that design brief seemed pretty accurate as we went through the boat, and later took it out for a sail. If kids and their friends are the crew, you could pack a pile of them into the two aft cabins, and the dining table in the saloon drops down to form a third double berth. And they could all share the head and shower compartment to starboard, at the foot of the companionway. Meantime, mom and pop can escape to the big forward stateroom.

The forward stateroom’s en suite head compartment does cut into a corner of the berth, but couples who plan to only occasionally have grandkids or friends aboard can forgo the forward head. They also could turn one of the aft cabins into a workspace or stowage, which is standard.

In all three configurations, the saloon stays unchanged. A settee, with a nav desk forward of it, is to port, opposite the dining table and a U-shaped, cushioned seat. The tabletop folds open to handle a crew of six or more. Abaft the settee is an L-shaped galley with a sink, fridge and three-burner gas stove. The boat we visited also had a microwave. Stowage seemed adequate for coastal-hopping, and the counters had fiddles to keep things from sliding off when heeled.

Topsides, the cockpit coamings make good backrests on the benches forward of the twin wheels. The seats are a bit too short for sleeping, the judges noted, but stepping out over the coamings isn’t difficult when headed forward.

Bavaria C38 saloon

Having owned (and sanded and varnished) a boat with exterior wood handrails and trim, I appreciated the C38’s low-maintenance exterior finish. The raised bulwarks and deck are fiberglass, and handrails on the cabin top are stainless steel. The only exterior wood is on the centerline table in the cockpit. That table’s after end doubles as a nifty place to mount a plotter because it’s visible from either helm. Far forward, there’s a chain locker with good access to the windlass and anchor rode. The anchor itself is stowed on a roller that extends forward, and the bow is further protected from accidental dings by a stainless-steel plate. Aft, there is equally good access to the emergency steering and quadrant for the single rudder.

forward compartment

A base-model C38 has a price tag of $248,000, but a model that’s well fitted out, like the one we visited, goes for $350,000, delivered to the United States, East Coast. Among the options included on the C38 we sailed were three air-conditioning units, a Fusion sound system, and synthetic teak called Esthec on the cockpit seats and sole, and the swim platform. Hardware and electronics were from Seldén, Lewmar and B&G. Sails were from Elvstrøm.

Bavaria builds 500-plus sailboats a year at its factory in Germany, and the C38 is the smallest in the five-boat Cossutti-designed C line; the flagship is a 57-footer. The company builds two other lines of cruising sailboats—the Cruiser and Vision ranges—for a total of 16 models starting at 32 feet.

Bavaria’s hulls and decks are all hand-laminated, with foam coring between inner and outer layers of fiberglass. Aluminum plates are in the composite sandwich wherever hardwaare is to be mounted. Hulls and decks are joined with adhesive and screws.

Underway, the C38 is a relatively simple boat to sail, with in-mast furling for the main and a self-tacking jib, also set on a furler. The boat doesn’t have a traveler, so when beating upwind, tacking requires just a turn of the wheel.

rounded bow

A double-ended mainsheet is led back to winches within reach of either of the twin wheels, and sail control lines are all led across the coachroof to clutches and a pair of winches on either side of the companionway. There are also genoa tracks mounted on deck and sheet winches on either coaming, should an owner opt for an overlapping genoa.

Underway, I found that visibility from either wheel was good, thanks to the low-profile cabin. The stainless-steel stern pulpit makes a good backrest when sitting down to steer.

We had moderate conditions the day we took the boat out for a sail on the Chesapeake Bay, right after the close of the United States Sailboat Show in Annapolis, Maryland, in October. Sailing hard on the wind in 15 or so knots of breeze, we saw a steady 5.5 knots on the GPS. The track for the self-tending jib’s car lacked stops, so we weren’t able to get the headsail in as far as we might have liked to, but that’s an easy fix. With the sheets eased a bit for a close reach, our speed jumped to 7 knots and change. Under power, the 40 hp Yanmar pushed us along at just over 6 knots, at a fuel-sipping 2,300 rpm cruising speed.

The skipper who delivered the boat to the show was along for the ride. He said that they’d encountered a variety of conditions on the ride up from St. Augustine, Florida, and the boat took them all in stride—just as a family cruiser should.

and (presumably American Hunter), but to me is the same same as . , design, performance and build quality.

Can't say I would ever buy one, given my own circumstances and plans.

But if I was ever after a to keep somewhere warm as a floating holiday home that could also be sailed enjoyably then I would be very tempted. Especially if I had / and needed the room they provide........can't say I would go around Cape Horn in one. But then again I can't say I would go around Cape Horn in anything! But I am sure folk have..........

Certainly when looking at new prices both Beneteau and Bavaria are very attractive - an article in one of the recent mags did some numbers, I think that a 40 footer (Beneteau or a Bavaria or something same same) from 10 years ago was new at the same as they still are (if not a fraction more expensive back then!) - prices kept down by massive increase in factory efficiencies, design and probably ..........

best parked up), I'd suggest build quality is possibly similar.

But they are good value of and helped 000's of people afford a new yacht and get out sailing and for that - we should all applaud Bavaria.

IMHO also, over the years since they started, thier low price policy has been a major influence on other production manufacturers who have not wished to loose market share.

I'd suggest if you choose a Bav buy second hand and you can score a bargain (certainly in Europe) as lots of first time buyers do become first time sellers too.

Good luck

The comparison to Beneteaus seems fair and I would definitely prefer an older BAV over an older Beneteau any day; if I was considering a new model, it would be a toss-up.

As much as I hate to admit this from an owner's perspective: I think Catalinas are the better made boat (both over Beneteau and BAV), Hunters just are a different (again agree with John), which may be on the same quality level as BAV and Beneteau.

They pushed it too far and the result was one dead, a boat sunk. "They" means certainly Bavaria but the designers as well, which is usually forgotten.

In the aftermath Bavaria did extremely poor dealing with this disaster, denying responsibility, accusing the charter-company of inadequate , the crew of mishandling the boat...

The Match series was first re-engineered, finally taken off production, the cruiser line are totally different boats.

Bavaria is in boats what Ford was in automobiles. The Model T was no Duesenberg either. And BAV as well as Ford surely changed their respective markets if not created them.

One issue that I do disagree with C on are the heavy capabilities: I have been in an 8 to 9 and several strong 7s with my BAV 40 and she took it well. I do particularly the "Bora of the century" April 12 and 13 2004 which claimed one fatality but we went through it unharmed.

My H 33 2004 while still having plenty of room down below has good modern lines and with its big roach main can beat similar sized Bavarias, Benetaus and Catalinas around the cans in our club races.
Handling is better than most, with the overhead arch traveller making it easy to control main and headsail from the .
I think also that it wins in the quality stakes compared to Bavaria, ie lead not cast iron keel, bonze not plastic prop, real , and corian in the and .

model, where all had to have them stripped out and re-engineered as keels worked loose. Price is not always an indicator of good engineering or design.

One Hanse 371 lost its rudder and sank due to a failure in the stock caused by a retro-engineered keyway cut. No similar failures on any other 371 or indeed, any other model produced.

To my knowledge, two US Hunters (at least one was scuttled) lost their rudders due to failure in the fibreglass rudder stocks mid Ocean within the past few years.

But again, lots of other composite stocks have also failed, including a couple of well engineered Davidson 50's in Oz........

So with boat choice, its always going to be horses for course and all that. It is good we all love our own choices and defend them as we should, but maybe we should stop knocking other peoples choices for invalid reasons.

Cheers

Bain Capital, the US private equity firm, yesterday announced the acquisition of Bavaria Yachtbau, Germany's biggest yachtmaker, in a deal believed to be worth as much as €1.3bn ($1.8bn).

According to the Financial Times, Bain Capital, a private equity company, paid as much as €1.3 billion (US$1.8 billion, £896 million) for the German sailboat and motorboat manufacturer, Bavaria.

This sum is equal to five times Bavaria's revenue of €271 million (US$365million, £182million) for the year ended July 2006, and a multiple in excess of 16 times the most recently filed earnings figure of €79 million on earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA).

What is the opinion of this board on Bavaria yachts? Are they similar in quality to Hunter, Catalina and Beneteau?

BAVARIA YACHTS

Bavaria is a German shipyard established in 1978 in the north of Bavaria. It is located south of Würzburg. Bavaria History was made when the administrator sold it for the first time in 2007. Then in 2009, History repeated itself, and Bavaria was sold to Anchorage advisors and Oaktree capital management. In December 2012, the brand expanded and bought the Dufour and Italian Cantiere del Pardo (big sun) ship. Unfortunately, the banking crash saw company values fall significantly. During the last ten years, growth has been steady but nowhere near the levels pre 2010. Production of Bavaria Yachts has been affected by the covid crisis in the same way all manufacturers have.

Navy sub arrives Down Under to initiate Australians in nuclear-power maintenance

The fast-attack submarine USS Hawaii prepares to moor at HMAS Stirling in Western Australia, Thursday, Aug. 22, 2024.

A U.S. Navy fast-attack submarine has docked in Western Australia as a training platform as the Australian navy prepares to maintain its own fleet of nuclear-powered boats.

The USS Hawaii arrived Thursday at HMAS Stirling, near Perth, according to a statement posted Friday by the U.S. Pacific Fleet.

The Virginia-class boat joined the submarine tender USS Emory S. Land, which arrived at the naval base on Aug. 16.

Australian technicians at Stirling are honing skills to service U.S. and British nuclear-powered fast-attack boats under the AUKUS defense pact - so named for Australia, the United Kingdom and United States.

The tender’s U.S. and Australian crew will perform maintenance on the Hawaii over several weeks, Lt. Cmdr. Rick Moore, Submarine Force commander, said in the statement.

The 2021 AUKUS agreement aims to position one British and four U.S. nuclear-powered boats as Submarine Rotational Force-West at Stirling.

The defense pact’s first phase is on track to bring the vessels there on a temporary basis within three years, Australia’s nonpartisan Lowy Institute reported last month.

More than 30 Australian sailors, supervised by U.S. personnel, will perform maintenance on the sub, Moore said.

Tasks will include “removal and reinstallation of an antenna located in Hawaii’s sail, divers visually inspecting the underwater towed array and torpedo tube muzzles, and simulating the removal and installation of a trim pump, to include full rigging and preparations,” he wrote.

It will be the first time Australians have maintained a U.S. nuclear-powered submarine in Australian waters, Capt. Brent Spillner, commander of the Emory S. Land, said in an Aug. 16 Navy news release.

“This is an important milestone and learning opportunity as we work together to establish Submarine Rotational Force–West, where both U.S. and UK submarines will regularly transit through HMAS Stirling, with maintenance and logistics assisted by Australian personnel,” he said.

Work done in the coming weeks will set Australia on the path toward its own fleet of nuclear-powered submarines, Cmdr. Dan Jones, skipper of the Hawaii, said in Friday’s release.

The sub visit coincides with the deployment of an undisclosed number of Air Force B-2 Spirits to Royal Australian Air Force Base Amberley for a bomber task force mission in the east coast state of Queensland.

Meanwhile, the Australian government announced plans for a new missile factory at Newcastle in New South Wales, also on the east coast.

Australia will contribute $577 million toward the facility operated by Norwegian defense contractor Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace to build naval and joint strike missiles for the Australian Defence Force and international customers, Australian Defense Industry and Capability Delivery Minister Pat Conroy told reporters Thursday.

The facility, able to produce more than 100 missiles a year, will start production in 2027, Conroy said, according to a transcript of his press conference.
