When I decide to go sailing, it takes me 40 minutes to launch the boat after taking it out of the cellar, loading it behind the bike and taking it to the lake. The sensations on the water are fantastic, the boat starts on the plane and splits the waves with elegance. In the small areas of Lake Geneva you can comfortably sit in the large cockpit to heel the boat and simply enjoy being on the water even in this early winter.

The Reverso is a great boat and I've already had a lot of fun with it! Every time I ride it, people come up to admire it and ask me what its special features are. No one seems to have seen anything similar.

Trailerable Sailboats Comparison

Trailerable Sailboats Comparison | Life of Sailing

Trailerable sailboats come in a variety of shapes and sizes. These vessels can be used for everything from racing to offshore cruising.

In this article, we'll compare six of the most common trailerable sailboat types along with their uses. Additionally, we'll cover vessel design elements that distinguish different types of trailerable sailboats.

The most common types of trailerable sailboats include dinghies, racers, open-top cruising sailboats, pocket cruisers, coastal cruisers, and compact offshore sailboats. These vessels differ by size, rig type, hull type, and weight.

The information contained in this article was sourced from sailing guides and vessel identification records. Additionally, we took into consideration the opinions of sailors with experience on a variety of trailerable sailboats.

Table of contents

Defining Trailerable Sailboats

What distinguishes a trailerable sailboat from any other small cruising craft? The first and most obvious consideration is size. A trailerable sailboat has to meet the dimensional requirements set forth by the Department of Transportation. In other words, it must fit on a trailer that's small enough to travel on the road.

An additional consideration is weight. A trailerable sailboat should weigh less than around 7,000 pounds, as this is the upper towing limit for most typical Class C vehicles. Most trailerable sailboats can be towed behind a typical half ton pickup or SUV.

Additionally, most trailerable sailboats have a swing keel or centerboard. This makes it possible to rest a boat on a low trailer. Most displacement keels are simply too tall, though there are a few exceptions. The maximum trailer load height in most states is 14 ft, which a trailerable sailboat should clear without trouble.

Length is a consideration, though it's not as important as width. The maximum beam of a trailerable sailboat is 8 ft 6 in, as this is the limit for standard trailers on American highways. Typically, trailerable sailboats don't exceed 30 feet in length, as the length to beam ratio of a longer boat would lead to poor handling characteristics.

The final consideration is rigging. Due to height requirements, trailerable sailboats must have collapsible masts. Additionally, rudders and other items that extend beyond the hull must fold or stow in some manner.

Types of Trailerable Sailboats

Trailerable sailboats come in many varieties, weights, in sizes. These vessels are designed for specific uses, such as racing, cruising, fishing, or training. Here are the most common kinds of trailerable sailboats, along with what they're used for.

1. Dinghies

Dinghies are small, open sailing craft that usually don't exceed 15 feet in length. Dinghies are designed for use in protected waters. They're sometimes used to shuttle between an anchored sailboat and the shore. Dinghies are popular racing vessels, and many sailing schools use them for sailing instruction.

Popular Trailerable Dinghies:

  • Optimist “Optie” (7 ft 9 in LOA)
  • Minto (9 ft LOA)
  • Wayfarer (16 ft)

Trailerable racing sailboats are long and narrow. They're designed for speed and agility, not comfort or offshore cruising. These boats generally have a low profile, and they're often open-top and lack sleeping accommodations.

Racing sailboats are lightweight and easy to tow. That said, trailerable racing sailboats are designed for experienced sailors as they're easier to capsize in high winds. These vessels range in size from 15 feet to over 25 feet.

Popular Trailerable Racing Sailboats:

  • National 12 (12 ft)
  • Sunfish (13 ft 9 in)
  • Merlin Rocket (14 ft)

3. Open-Top Cruisers

Open-top cruising sailboats lack a cabin. However, these seaworthy craft are more than capable of coastal cruising in a variety of conditions. Many of these vessels are based on proven workboat designs that date back over a century. These vessels are ideal for harbor sailing and cruising on lakes.

Some people use open-top cruising sailboats for camping, as these traditional vessels are long enough to lay down a cot or sleeping bag. They make a great starter sailboat, as they're safe and easy to store in the garage or driveway.

Popular Trailerable Open-Top Cruisers

  • Norseboat (17 ft 6 in)
  • Bay Rider (20 ft)
  • Com-Pac Legacy (23)

4. Pocket Cruisers

Pocket cruisers are similar to coastal cruisers, though they're distinguishable by their size and amenities. Generally speaking, a pocket cruiser is a small sailboat (under 25 feet in length) that features a cabin, galley, self-draining cockpit, and other 'big boat' accommodations.

Pocket cruisers usually aren't designed for serious offshore cruising, but they are comfortable for extended coastal or inland voyages. They weigh more than racing vessels, as stability is a key aspect of their design. Pocket cruisers are popular because they offer impressive capabilities in a small package.

Popular Trailerable Pocket Cruisers

  • Sandpiper (15 ft)
  • Sanderling (18 ft)
  • West Wight Potter (19 ft)

5. Coastal Cruisers

Coastal cruisers are some of the most popular trailerable sailboats on the market. These vessels usually feature a cabin with a V-berth and a sink, though they occasionally include a head and a complete galley. Coastal cruisers are seaworthy enough for most near-shore and inland weather conditions.

Some adventurous sailors have taken coastal cruisers on extended bluewater voyages, though it's not particularly common. The size and sailing characteristics of these vessels is often not their greatest limiting factor.

There's only so many provisions you can store aboard a 22 to 25-foot sailboat, which is why coastal cruisers are generally considered impractical for offshore voyaging. Coastal cruisers handle well, and they're easy to sail, which is why this type of trailerable sailboat is popular in bays and harbors across the country.

Popular Trailerable Coastal Cruisers

  • Cal 20 (20 ft)
  • Catalina 22 (22 ft)
  • Hunter 22 (22 ft)

6. Compact Offshore Sailboats

Compact offshore sailboats are the rarest and most capable type of trailerable sailboat. These vessels are a big boat in a compressed package. They typically feature a long displacement keel, a wide beam, and a cramped but feature-filled cabin.

These vessels are true cruising boats inside and out. The cabins usually feature a full galley, standing headroom, ahead with a shower, a V-berth upfront, and provisions for navigation. Their rigging is strong enough to handle offshore weather conditions.

Compact offshore sailboats usually have the greatest displacement, as their deep draft and wide beam keep them stable in rolling seas. This also contributes to greater dry weight, which is why they can't be towed by small vehicles.

Vessels of this type are technically trailerable, as they meet the dimensional requirements to travel on the highway. That's said, moving one of these boats is difficult. Owners generally keep these vessels in the water or in dry storage most of the year to avoid the hazard and hassle of towing such a hefty boat.

Popular Compact Offshore Cruisers

  • Flicka 20 (20 ft)
  • Dana 24 (24 ft)
  • Nor'Sea 27 (27 ft)

The keel of a sailboat keeps it stable and tracking a straight course. Most trailerable sailboats have retractable keels of some variety, though some have fixed (permanently lowered) keels. Here are the most common types of trailerable sailboat keels in order of their popularity.

1. Centerboard

A centerboard is a form of retractable keel that's common on the smallest types of trailerable sailboats. A centerboard is essentially a long, thin blade that descends through a hole in the bottom of the boat.

Half of the centerboard remains inside the boat in a box called the 'centerboard trunk.' Centerboards are simple and easy to use, but the centerboard trunk takes up useful space in the cockpit or cabin.

2. Swing Keel

The swing keel is a type of retractable keel that eliminates the inconvenient centerboard trunk. A swing keel is a centerboard with a hinge on one end. It lives in a trunk, typically below the base of the hull, and swings down when in use.

Swing keels allow the sailboat to ride low on a trailer, which makes them a popular choice for pocket cruisers and trailer-sailers. Swing keels raise and lower using a  block and tackle system or a crank, usually located near the bilge or under a seat.

3. Fin Keel

Fin keels are less common on trailerable sailboats than they are on larger cruising boats. This type of keel is fixed to the bottom of the hull. A fin keel blade extends between 12 inches and 3 feet below the hull, and it occasionally includes a hydrodynamic bulb on the end. Fin keels are most often found on racing boats.

4. Semi-Displacement

Semi-displacement keels are long, fixed keels that run along the aft 2/3 of the hull. This type of keel is designed for cruising boats that value speed but still want to retain the stability and seaworthiness of a full keel.

Some trailerable sailboats have semi-displacement keels, especially if they're designed for offshore use. The benefits of a semi-displacement keel over a full keel are negligible on a trailer, as both types have a deep draft and high ride height.

5. Displacement (Full Keel)

Displacement keels are traditional and highly seaworthy. This type of keel runs across the entire length of the hull, usually reaching its deepest point at the stern. Displacement keels are found on vessels that are designed for offshore use.

Displacement keels are uncommon on trailerable sailboats, as they're long and cause the vessel to ride high on a trailer. Additionally, the type of vessel that uses a displacement keel is often wide and heavy, which isn't ideal for trailering.

Collapsable rigging is a hallmark of trailerable sailboats. The best trailerable sailboats have collapsible masts that stow securely across the deck. These vessels typically have a fork-shaped mast boot that acts as a hinge, allowing sailors to easily lower and secure the mast.

Many trailerable sailboats are gaff rigged. Though the traditional gaff rig is more complex than a modern Bermuda rigs, it uses a shorter and stronger mast. This has obvious benefits for trailerable boats, as the mast and spars store more easily.

Trailer Types

There are multiple types of trailers used to tow and store sailboats. The most common kind of sailboat trailer is the single-axle trailer. These trailers have one wheel on each side, and you can tow them with a standard Class IV trailer hitch.

Larger sailboats, such as heavy offshore cruising vessels, require something a bit sturdier. These vessels typically ride on dual-axle trailers, which have two wheels on each side.

Larger trailers, such as those with two axles, connect to a standard trailer hitch or to a fifth wheel hitch, which is mounted in the bed of a truck. Fifth-wheel trailers are the least common type of sailboat trailer.

Sailboat Weight and Towing

Dry weight is an important factor to consider when comparing trailerable sailboats. It's important to avoid confusing displacement and weight, even though both values use the same units.

Displacement is the weight of the water displaced by the vessel, whereas dry weight determines how much the boat weighs with its tanks empty and bilge dry. The ideal towing weight of a typical trailerable sailboat is between 3,000 and 5,000 pounds. This weight is within the towing capabilities of most trucks and full-size SUVs.

Larger trailerable vessels, such as many coastal cruisers and offshore trailer-sailers, can weigh 7,500 pounds or more. A sailboat of this magnitude requires a heavy-duty towing vehicle, such as a 1-ton diesel pickup truck.

Best Trailerable Sailboat for Cruising

For protected cruising, such as in a bay or after the river, it's hard to overlook the Catalina 22. This iconic fiberglass sailboat is known for easy handling and fun sailing characteristics. It has a comfortable cabin with plenty of room for a weekend on the water.

For more extensive cruising, especially offshore, the best trailerable sailboat is the Nor'Sea 27. This vessel is ideal due to its spacious interior and full accommodations. It has a full keel for stability, along with a head, galley, and sleeping arrangements down below.

Best Trailerable Sailboat for Weekend Sailing

The ideal weekend cruiser should be easy to tow in fast to rig, as larger and more complex vessels take too much time and effort the launch. With this in mind, it's a tie between the Wayfarer dinghy and the West Wight Potter. Both of these vessels are well-designed, fast to launch, and fun to sail.

Astus Makes Owning A Small Tri Easy. Here's How:

docking an Astus 22.5 trimaran

Cheaper Dockage

The Astus 22.5 has telescopic beams which means that it can easily be collapsed to a narrower width. This makes finding a slip or moorage both easy and affordable. The bottoms of the hulls stay the bottom of the hulls when folded, unlike Corsair's folding design, so you needn't worry about a scum line after being left in the water while folded. Many marinas have shallow, close to shore, slips available at discount as they are hard to rent. The Astus 22.5 can easily be docked at a slip suited for a boat as small as a J22!

Safety First

Trimarans are very stable boats making it less likely for crew to trip or fall. The Astus 22.5 is unsinkable with multiple buoyant chambers. The 22.5 is a coastal weekender or daysailer that is ready to make memories that will last a lifetime without the risks involved with sailing a monohull or catamaran!

rigging an Astus 22.5 trimaran

Easy to Rig

The French are at the bleeding edge of quality and technology in the sailing industry. In addition to this, they are also not known for being the biggest statured people, on average. This means Astus needed to design an easy way to step the mast and with an optional mast stepping rig, you can easily step the mast of this boat (on land or on water) with only 1 person in no time flat!

Fun for the Whole Family

The biggest issue with a small sailboat is...it is small, there's no room for kids to be kids. The Astus 22.5 solves this problem with its more than 300 square feet of deck area! In addition to the large deck space, there is a small cabin capable of sleeping a family of 4 if needed or for the kids to escape the elements on an overly sunny or rainy day.

Folding System

Legendary ability, unbeatable reliability.

Folding and unfolding a Corsair trimaran takes only a minute. With just 4 bolts to remove, it is easily managed by one person, and is normally done while afloat. Simply raise (to fold) or press down (to unfold) the inboard end of one cross beam. It can be done from the safety of the cockpit and only a little force is needed due to the folding system’s carefully balanced geometry, and the movement of the floats being mostly horizontal.

The solid aluminium folding struts have absolute control over the folding motion and prevent flexing or racking. A stainless steel bolt on the inboard end of each beam secures the floats for sailing. Crucially, wingnets remain attached during the folding process – their frictionless fixing allows them to tension themselves appropriately through the folding process. The system is so simple and balanced that Corsair trimarans can even be folded while motoring.

TRAILERING ACROSS CONTINENTS

Corsair Marine trimarans are especially weight-conscious, and sit low on their trailers meaning they have excellent trailering characteristics. They are equally easy to launch, giving you more time on the water, and the ability to expore many more remote cruising grounds or participate in regattas far from home. Some Corsair trimaran models go from trailer to water in 25 minutes, and with practice even the largest boat models can be done in 40 minutes.

Best Sailboats for a Fun Lake Day.

10 Best Sailboats for a Fun Lake Day

collapsible mast sailboat

Table of Contents

Last Updated on August 28, 2023 by Boatsetter Team

Sailing on lakes can be fun, especially if the wind is steady and the water is relatively flat. Although a 50-foot sailboat wouldn’t go amiss on Lake Superior, most lakes are perfect for smaller, more lightweight boats.

For inland waterways, it’s best to find compact sailboats under 30 feet with a centerboard or swing keel so they can be trailed from one lake to another. A tabernacle or collapsible mast that folds or is removable also comes in handy.

Finally, there’s a difference between a small open sailboat for day outings and one with a bunk and a head (toilet) so you can camp aboard for the weekend. Let’s look at a mix of 10 older and newer boats perfect for lake sailing.

  • Catalina 22 (25 & 27 also available)

Discover sailboat rentals for a lake day near you

1. Optimist

Optimist sailboat.

The Optimist sailing dinghy weighs under 80 pounds and is virtually unsinkable. They’re easy to find since over 100,000 hulls have been sold.

Designed in the 1970s, the Laser is a simple sailboat with a single sail and room for one. It’s very popular with one-design racers.

Sabot sailboat.

A workhorse in yacht club youth sailing programs, the Sabot is a sailing dinghy with a centerboard that is perfect for kids to learn the ropes – literally.

This open 14-footer was first built in 1958 and developed quite a following with dinghy sailors. It has a fractional rig and a centerboard and can be sailed by one or two.

Sunfish sailboat.

The Sunfish is more sophisticated than a typical sailing dinghy and can carry two adults since it’s 14 feet long. It’s a great boat on which to master racing skills.

6. Harbor 20

A fast and contemporary daysailer, the Harbor 20 was conceived on a bar napkin by fellow yacht clubbers, and its appeal has grown worldwide since. Fast and fun, the Harbor 20 even has a small electric motor hidden in the transom .

7. Alerion 28

Smart and sophisticated, the Alerion 28 turns heads with its impressive lines. With classic East Coast styling, the Alerion 28 has a beautifully appointed interior with all the amenities a couple would need for weekending.

8. Hobie Cat (assorted lengths)

Hobie Cat.

This rotomolded sailing catamaran is virtually indestructible, which is why it’s so popular with resort and hotel fleets. There are a few to choose from, with the 18-foot Mirage Tandem Island model offering not only sails but also patented pedal power below the water.

9. MiniCat (assorted lengths)

This model is surprisingly sophisticated, an inflatable sailing catamaran with kick-up rudders and lots of sail trim adjustments. It can be assembled in under an hour and packed into two bags for easy transport.

10. Catalina 22 (25 & 27 also available)

The smallest of the current Catalina Yachts line , the 22, and its slightly larger siblings can be sailed coastally and on lakes. These covered boats have a V- berth bunk, toilet, sink, ice box, and room for a camping stove.

  • Navigating the High Seas: A Comprehensive Guide to Sailboat Masts

Sailboat masts are the unsung heroes of the sailing world, silently supporting the sails and ensuring a smooth journey across the open waters. Whether you're a seasoned sailor or a novice, understanding the intricacies of sailboat masts is essential for a safe and enjoyable voyage. In this comprehensive guide, we will delve into the world of sailboat masts, discussing their types, maintenance, and everything in between.

Types of Sailboat Masts

Sailboat masts come in various configurations, each with its advantages and drawbacks. The two primary types are keel-stepped and deck-stepped masts.

Keel-Stepped Masts

Keel-stepped masts are the most common type, extending through the deck and resting on the boat's keel. They provide excellent stability and are suitable for larger sailboats. However, they require careful maintenance to prevent water intrusion into the boat's cabin.

Deck-Stepped Masts

Deck-stepped masts rest on the deck of the boat, making them easier to install and remove. They are commonly found on smaller sailboats and are more forgiving in terms of maintenance. However, they may offer slightly less stability than keel-stepped masts.

Components of a Sailboat Mast

To understand mast maintenance better, it's essential to know the various components of a sailboat mast. The key parts include the masthead, spreaders, shrouds, and halyard sheaves.

The masthead is the topmost section of the mast, where the halyards are attached to raise and lower the sails. It also often houses instruments such as wind indicators and lights.

Spreaders and Shrouds

Spreaders are horizontal supports attached to the mast to help maintain the proper angle of the shrouds (cables or rods that provide lateral support to the mast). Properly adjusted spreaders and shrouds are crucial for mast stability and sail performance.

Mast Materials: Choosing the Right One

Sailboat masts are typically constructed from three primary materials: aluminum, wood, and carbon fiber. Each material has its unique characteristics and is suited to different sailing preferences.

Aluminum Masts

Aluminum masts are lightweight, durable, and relatively easy to maintain. They are commonly used in modern sailboats due to their cost-effectiveness and longevity.

Wooden Masts

Wooden masts, while classic and beautiful, require more maintenance than other materials. They are best suited for traditional or vintage sailboats, where aesthetics outweigh convenience.

Carbon Fiber Masts

Carbon fiber masts are the pinnacle of mast technology. They are incredibly lightweight and strong, enhancing a sailboat's performance. However, they come at a premium price.

Mast Maintenance

Proper mast maintenance is essential for safety and longevity. Regular cleaning, inspection, and addressing minor issues promptly can prevent costly repairs down the line.

Cleaning and Inspection

Regularly clean your mast to remove salt, dirt, and grime. Inspect it for signs of corrosion, wear, or damage, paying close attention to the masthead, spreaders, and shrouds.

Common Repairs and Their Costs

Common mast repairs include fixing corroded areas, replacing damaged spreaders, or repairing shrouds. The cost of repairs can vary widely, depending on the extent of the damage and the materials used.

Extending the Lifespan of Your Mast

Taking steps to prevent damage is essential. Avoid over-tightening halyards, protect your mast from UV radiation, and keep an eye on corrosion-prone areas.

for owners to use. I’ve seen some fairly good sized but never a .

Too many bridges between (9 I think) my pier and the lake. Very large tourist come through and they somehow get the bridges to open but I don’t know if a fits with them open. Each bridge is different some are full draw, and some rotate. But some go up elevator style.

It seems that a designed for a might be perfect as the comes down.. I can not get good information on REALLY how easy or fast the mast goes up or down.

Anyone have have any experience? If this is doable, I would look for a at the maximum length with the fastest (and strongest) mast system. Maybe as much as 30ft. If it takes over an hour, probably not worth it. But if I could park at my apartment (which is the dream) could just pull it out once in the . Not likely to it around much.

Thanks!

I have dropped the masts while out cruising to get under bridges, exactly as you are hoping to do. Maybe ten minutes to furl the and drop the masts. The tabernacles guide the mast during raising and lowering, making the evolution safe and easy for a person. Tabernacles are not common on production boats, although the practice is not a new idea.

, nearly all yachts are fitted with hinged masts as there are 3 bridges to go under to get out to sea. Mast lowering is not a regular occurrence here as one tends to either stay on the river or for larger yachts keep them in an Oceanside marina.

on my 34ft yacht, the whole process from stopping sailing to lowering, raising and back to sailing takes about 60 minutes of hard . It’s also fraught with as the mast in the few minutes of raising or lowering is very vulnerable if the yacht rolls from side to side.
I use an A frame of 2 poles to the base of the forestry, but some use an A frame that slides up the mast track and provides much better stability.
Basically, it’s a total PITA to take my yacht out onto the ocean from the river. There are 60 ft yachts that do this here, so it’s not impossible, but not recommended for every weekend’s sailing.

and are very securely tied into the bulkheads. The bulkheads are placed with supporting the tabernacles in mind.

The tabernacle and hinge pin height is selected with lever arm considerations. Also on my boat consideration for how the masts will lay when the horizontal for trailering is also a consideration. Raising carbon fibre masts of about 30 feet is quite easy. Obvious the longer and heavier the mast the more difficult.

Chotu, I have enjoyed following your cat build out. I have a mental picture of an awesome boat coming together. I imagine a folding mast using tabernacles is possible, but 60 foot is a serious long mast for this. Being a cat I suppose runners could be set at each bow to the mast up and down under full control. Think this through carefully with consideration of the lever arm produced by the rig as it comes down. A gin pole will likely be necessary.

FOLDING MAST STEPS for EASIER & SAFER SAIL STOWING! or climbing the mast

How many yachtsmen have struggled to reach the gooseneck, the highest reef point or the top of he sail cover by attempting to balance on a halyard, winch or something even smaller? Well now there’s a quick and simple solution for this risky and dangerous activity.

Now available are the new “lightweight, rattle free, aesthetic, strong and foldable” mast steps. These steps are easily unobtrusively fitted to the mast providing safe and secure footholds while climbing or working the mast.

The folding mast step is manufactured from a special combination of Nylon/Glass fiber which together with its design gives the step enormous strength. With a 3% additive, it makes the mast step UV resistant and prevents material degradation.

The steps weighs only 165grams each (weight is always a consideration for products up a mast), and when folded does not snag ropes or sails due to the ‘snag-free’ design. At anchor or on a mooring the steps do not rattle in the wind and there is a choice of colors to match the mast – white, black and grey.

The steps are placed on opposite sides of the mast with a recommended spacing of 375mm and two opposite each other 1200mm down from the top of the mast for stable and safe working on sheaves, halyards and masthead instruments. Due to its construction and the materials used, it is easy to adjust the step to fit the radius of the mast. Simply tape a sheet of sand paper at the position where the step is to be fitted, rub the saddle of the step up and down until the step snugly fit’s the mast curvature.

When using the steps to climb the mast, one simply unfolds the steps in front as one ascends and folds them behind him as you descend the mast. The steps also provide a secure foothold but it is always strongly recommended to use a harness with a safety line attached.

There are many benefits of using the reinforced Nylon/Glass fiber folding mast steps, here are a few of them:

  • Lightweight
  • Corrosion free
  • No electrolysis as with stainless steel fitted to aluminum
  • No rattling
  • Available in Grey, Black and White
  • UV resistant

First folding mast construction for Superyachts created by Sunreef Yachts

Sunreef Yachts , the world-renowned company specializing in custom design, took another big step forward and created a folding mast on one of its superyacht-catamarans above 80ft, exclusively upon the request of one of the company’s clients. This represents the very first folding mast construction for superyachts in the domain of yacht customization.

Sunreef 80 Carbon Line luxury yacht LEVANTE

Luxury yacht LEVANTE from the 80ft series Carbon Line built by Sunreef Yachts

The idea of a sailing catamaran with a folding mast came up in order to lower the airdraft from 38.5 m to 24 m. Such a feature had never been fitted on a yacht of this size, let alone on a catamaran measuring over 80ft. The carbon fibre mast folds forward in its middle section at a 90 degree angle. The mast’s base features a set of two automatic cylinders, absorbing the rotation of the mast in the folded position. It folds just above the staysail chainplate, so the bottom part of the mast can still be supported by the rig when the mast is folded. Another innovation here is the flexible, custom designed, individually manufactured forestay furler. It can be bent in a circle of a 3 meter diameter.

Below is a selection of the lovely charter yachts built by Sunreef .

Collapsible Mast

  • Add to quote

Hi, I recently moved to a house in St Petersburg, Fl that has water access but you have to pass under a small bridge (8-9' at high/10-11' at low depending on the tide) so now I'm trying to find a nice daysailer or small weekender (used) manufactured with a collapsible mast. Other than Com Pac, are there other brands I can do searches for? Thanks Cords

You might look at the MacGregor 26' trailerable water ballast sailboat. They have a mast raising system that I have heard decent things about. I would not get the newer 26X or M model though. Look for the 26 S or D (none of the older boats sport a 50HP outboard engine). There was a 26X in our mooring field whose mast broke at the spreaders this season. Barring a boat this big I would suggest a Sunfish or Laser that you could pull the rig down for getting under the bridge. If you can deal with a trailerable boat then find a launching ramp beyond the bridge. Good luck.

I don't know if the mast raising system on the 26S or 26D will still allow the boat to pass under that bridge at high tide. They could probably make it at low tide... but 5' is pretty tight clearance wise.
