First ever floating Ritz-Carlton hotel registered in Malta

The Ritz-Carlton Evrima is about to welcome its first guests

The first ship of the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, the Malta-registered Ritz-Carlton Evrima, is about to welcome its first guests. After a three-year delay caused in part by the supply chain crisis, the superyacht hotel is finally about to set off on an inaugural seven-night cruise from Barcelona to Nice, starting on 15th October.

The floating luxury hotel can carry up to 298 passengers and 246 crew members. The high ratio of crew to guests allows the cruise to maintain the personalised experience the Ritz-Carlton is famous for, with every suite having access to a personal concierge as well as a separate concierge to organise trips ashore.

Douglas Prothero, founder and chief executive officer of the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, told Bloomberg that the brand-name appeal helped in recruiting, a fact he puts down to the perceived potential to eventually transfer to a position with the same hotel group on land. He also noted that every position available was over-subscribed.

Mr Prothero was central to the Ritz-Carlton’s foray into the maritime business, with the Yacht Collection being a joint venture between the renowned hotel and his Yacht Portfolio, a maritime investment group.

The company has two additional 456-passenger yachts on order from France’s Chantiers de l-Atlantique, slated for delivery in 2024 and 2025.

According to Cruise Mapper , the Evrima cost €290 million to build.

The Evrima is one of the most highly anticipated luxury vessels ever, and Ritz-Carlton regulars have jumped at the chance to see what the superyacht has to offer.

According to Chris Gabaldon, senior vice president of luxury brands for Marriott International, Ritz-Carlton’s parent company, most reservations are from people who have never been on a cruise before, an indication of the brand’s appeal and of the underserved nature of its target market.

“We are moving into a space we believe many of the affluent consumers have wanted to go but have not had the brand to support them,” he said.

The 190-metre vessel was designed by maritime design firm Tillberg, from Sweden, in collaboration with the Ritz-Carlton team, and built in Vigo, Spain, by Astilleros Barreras Shipyard.

Mr Prothera is at pains to point out that the venture is not about providing a cruise experience, but about “taking Ritz-Carlton casual modern luxury to sea”.

Suites have ceiling higher than the norm for cruise ships, and feature private outdoor terraces overlooking the sea.

The Evrima has several features that would typically be found resorts, from a supervised programme for children to a spa, and has more space per passenger than any other luxury cruise ship, according to Mr Prothero.

“You can be as quiet as you want or get together in a crowd, and there are a number of ways to do that,” he says. At one secluded table for 10, you can host your own dinner party.

Other attractions include an infinity pool and dedicated marina for all kinds of water sports, with paddleboards, kayaks, sailboats, windsurf boards and snorkeling equipment available for guests.

The main restaurant’s menu is crcafted by Chef Sven Elverfeld of the three-Michelin-starred Aqua at the Ritz-Carlton in Wolfsburg, Germany, while Southeast Asian dishes and sushi are also available – and room service is available around the clock.

The uppermost of the Evrima’s 10 decks hosts an indoor and outdoor observation terrace serving as a social hub, serving cocktails and live entertainment every evening.

The itineraries on offer in the first years follow the yachting crowd around Mediterranean and Caribbean hotspots like Ibiza, St Tropez, Bequia, St Barts, Aruba and Tenerife.

Valletta, malta.

A UNESCO World Heritage site, Valletta is a diminutive city packed with history. Sailing into the harbor is an experience in itself, as the dome and spire of competing churches rise above the cluster of limestone façades and formidable ramparts. Built by the Knights of St. John in the 16th century, Valletta is architecturally Baroque in character, with Mannerist, neoclassical and modern elements as well. It’s easy to navigate the city on foot and take in sights such as the City Gate, National Museum of Archaeology, Grand Master’s Palace and St. John's Co-Cathedral, which houses the famous Caravaggio painting The Beheading of St. John . Gardens are plenty, including the Upper Barrakka, which offer panoramic views. In the Maltese countryside, megalithic temples reveal the island’s prehistoric past, and the surrounding waters are also worth exploring, particularly the gorgeous sea caverns of the Blue Grotto.

Ritz-Carlton Launches Ilma: World’s Largest Hotel-Branded Superyacht

By Fran Golden (Bloomberg) When Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection finally unveiled its 298-passenger  Evrima  in 2022 after a few years of high-water drama involving  construction delays at a Spanish shipyard , it blazed a trail as the first hotel-branded superyacht. Two years later, the brand is established as a posh option for cruise skeptics: 50% of its guests are first-time cruisers and 20% have already booked repeat trips. By those metrics, the yacht line is a success.

But that doesn’t mean it’s been smooth sailing. When Ritz-Carlton officially debuts its second yacht, the 448-passenger, $600 million  Ilma , on Sept. 2, it will represent a pivot for the brand.

It wasn’t totally intentional. First there was the shipyard drama, which necessitated a switch to a more experienced boat builder called Chantiers de l’Atlantique in St. Nazaire, France . Then there was a move to a hybrid liquid natural gas system, which reduces carbon dioxide emissions and allows  Ilma  to switch to sustainable fuels in the future—but requires a larger ship to be built. And last came a leadership shuffle for the nascent company—which licenses its name from  Marriott International  and is run as a separate entity—that brought in a new chief executive officer, Jim Murren, formerly of  MGM Resorts International .

As a result, the 790-foot  Ilma  is a substantially larger ship than the intentionally intimate, 628-foot  Evrima . And the stakes are substantially higher, too. Murren says he hopes this second vessel will cement Ritz-Carlton’s leadership of the ultra-luxury cruise market as its hotel brand rivals—Four Seasons, Orient Express and Aman—prepare to sail in with their own ships in 2026 and 2027.

All that upcoming competition adds urgency to Murren’s plans: He aims to add three more ships to Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, broaden the concept to other Marriott luxury hotel brands  and go public .

The company recently accessed public markets for the first time and raised $300 million in a senior secured bond issue, which Murren describes as “oversubscribed.” He says that’s  enough to wrap financing  for  Ilma  and a sister ship,  Luminara , due next July, and still have some funds left. Talks with shareholders about ships No. 4 and No. 5, also set to be built in France, start in the fall.

But for now, all eyes are trained on  Ilma , which reflects many tweaks made in response to results of  Evrima  guest surveys and offers more space per passenger than any other ship in the world. It commands rates of $2,600 per cabin per night—an enviable fare even in luxury cruising. This market, Murren says, has an estimated potential of more than $5 billion per year and is barely tapped. With only 50,000 suites a year to fill on two ships, he says the Collection doesn’t “have nearly enough suites to sell.”

What it does have is plenty of Champagne: The Collection expects to pour 6,000 bottles of complimentary Moët & Chandon a month on its two ships combined.

Here’s a first look at what to expect from the Collection’s latest ship—all good indicators of what to expect in the company’s future.

A Stellar Pool Deck

Pool deck aboard a superyacht at sea with clouds int he background

The yacht’s name means “water” in Maltese, and the Malta-flagged  Ilma  is designed to max out views and water experiences—something guests on the smaller  Evrima  said they wanted more of.

The most significant addition is a main pool set above the top deck. Surrounded by daybeds, it replicates the above-the-world experience of a rooftop pool at a swank hotel—and the number of loungers around it was determined by studies conducted on  Evrima  so guests won’t have to fight for a prime spot.

As for the expected crowd: Like  Evrima ’s passengers, the ship likely will draw high-net-worth North American travelers, especially Marriott Bonvoy loyalty program members, ready to show off their designer swimwear. Some will come with their progeny, attracted by a Ritz-Kids program , but most will be adults, average age 53, and no matter their age, many are retired. Based on the  Evrima experience, they’ll be looking to let loose and have a good time at sea.

Bells and Whistles at Sea Level

A favorite spot on the earlier ship is the Marina, a cocktail lounge whose tiered terrace has a bottom section that can be lowered to sea level and hover over the water. When the yacht is at anchor, guests can jump off the back for a swim or launch paddleboards and other equipment.

Ilma ’s Marina will be larger and have an even more striking entrance to the sea, thanks to a floating platform created out of inflatable and rigid pieces by superyacht toy company AquaBanas. Think a floating catwalk that leads out to a netted swimming area with floating chairs. (Some even have a canopy above them.) It takes the  overwater hammock trend  to a whole new level.

Multiplying the Suites

The two oversize “owner suites,” the top category on  Evrima,  were oversubscribed, so  Ilma  has eight. While all suites have a private outdoor terrace, these $80,000-per-week accommodations have outdoor living areas with whirlpool, shower, couches, loungers and dining space. Indoors, there’s Calcutta marble on the bar, emerald marble on the dining table and bespoke sofas by French designer Ligne Roset.

Concierge Suites are another new suite category, all four topping 1,000 square feet of combined indoor and outdoor space. All suites come with king-size beds, double-sink bathrooms and personalized concierge service. As on the  Evrima , there are practically as many crew members as guests.

More Space for Wellness

Guest feedback also led to the decision for a bigger Ritz-Carlton Spa on  Ilma , with 11 treatment rooms compared to  Evrima’s  five and some of those are equipped for outdoor massages. A 12-part, six-foot-long David Hockney swimming scene lithograph greets guests at the entrance, and dim lighting sets the mood for treatments such as a stretching-massage combo called the Ultimate Bamboo Experience ($420), which according to its description in the spa’s brochure, “is perfect for slowing busy minds.” Products throughout are from 111SKIN and ESPA. The spa also has a cycling studio.

Michelin-Quality Meals

The open-air, pan-Latin Beach House restaurant on Deck 5 is among five dining options. Done by Toronto-based Chapi Chapo Design, it’s likely to be the buzziest, since it has its own infinity splash pool. Evenings here may begin with sunset cocktails, live Latin music and ceviche. The menu is by James Beard Award-winning California chef Michael Mina. Over at Seta su Ilma, the ship’s most intimate restaurant, the 11-course modern Italian tasting menu ($350 with wine pairings) comes courtesy of another Beard winner, Washington, DC-based Fabio Trabocchi.

Doubling Down on Nightlife

Even though  Ilma  is a larger ship, its designers took care to stay away from anything deemed overly cruise-shippy and maintained a few spaces that will be recognizable from  Evrima . One of them is the Living Room, a meeting spot for both day and night inspired by a high-ceilinged hotel lobby bar. But  the designers have added an oval-shape dance floor where a DJ can spin tunes late into the night. The other nightclub spot is Mediterranean-inspired Mistral—the restaurant’s outdoor terrace will take on a sultry vibe once the last courses are served.

Expect high-end art throughout. An art history major in college, Murren helped choose the pieces to adorn the public spaces, including an original Andy Warhol sea turtle silkscreen above a banquette in the Living Room.

New Itineraries and Destinations

ritz carlton yacht malta

Like  Evrima ,  Ilma  will leave the Mediterranean for the Caribbean for the winter season and head back in the spring. In July,  Ilma  will sail around Northern Europe and the Baltic region—a first for the company—with varying itineraries that are set to include Copenhagen, Stockholm, Oslo and Riga, Latvia.

While most of Ritz-Carlton’s cruises are seven nights long, the company is also ramping up five-night sailings for busy executives who can’t take a whole week off. This coming Caribbean season, it’s additionally testing three- and four-night voyages from Fort Lauderdale and San Juan, in hopes of engaging even more new-to-cruise guests. On those trips and other Caribbean sailings, ultra-luxe excursions will include helicoptering from Antigua to Barbuda for a master sushi class at Nobu ($2,900 per person) or sunset sailing with a private chef from Bonaire ($1,250 per person).

Up next for the line will be the 452-passenger  Luminara,  which after a few inaugural months in the Mediterranean will begin exploring the Asia-Pacific region in December 2025—another common request from the passenger surveys.

As for  Ilma , shakedown cruises, as rehearsal-style family and friends trips are called, are happening this month, and the first paying guests will come onboard on Sept. 2, for a seven-night jaunt from Monte Carlo to Rome.

Review of Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection

The Ritz-Carlton cruise brand (officially "The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection", official website ) is one of the cruising industry's ultra-luxury new companies (and trademarked travel brand) owned by Marriott International Inc. On June 22, 2017, the 5-star hotel brand Ritz-Carlton announced its private luxury cruise line, with a planned start of operations in 2019 and a 3-ship fleet ( newbuilds ), with an option to expand to 5 boats.

  • In March 2020, due to shipbuilding delays, the cruise company's launch was postponed to April 22, 2021 (instead of February 1, 2020), when the first ship ( Evrima ) had to start the Maiden Voyage from Lisbon to Palma de Mallorca.
  • In late-January 2021, the brand's inauguration date was again rescheduled - to July 24th (7-day from Venice to Piraeus-Athens). A total of 56 voyages (planned for 2020-2021 in Europe-Canada-Caribbean) were canceled.
  • In late-August 2021, due to the COVID pandemic, the brand's inauguration was postponed through 2022, with Evrima's Maiden Voyage rescheduled first to May 6th (from Lisbon) and later to August 6th (from Piraeus-Athens) and eventually October 15th (from Barcelona). The cancellations affected a total of 116 voyages originally planned for 2020-2021-2022.

All affected bookings were either rescheduled or fully refunded (100% reimbursement of the fare paid). Independently booked flights and hotels were also fully reimbursed (for date changes or cancellation fees) and travel agents' commissions were protected (cruise-only commissions for all canceled voyages).

All Ritz-Carlton ships are Malta- flagged and registered in Valletta .

The Ritz-Carlton "cruise line rival" is another (ultra-luxury hospitality company-owned) subsidiary and brand - Four Seasons Yachts (debuting in 2025-Q4).

Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection logo - CruiseMapper

The Ritz-Carlton's cruise brand targets travelers familiar with The Ritz-Carlton hotel brand, as well as Asia's booming luxury cruising market. As fleet size, vessel capacity and shipboard amenities, the cruise line is in direct competition with the top-luxury brands Ponant (Artemis), RSSC-Regent (NCLH-Norwegian), NYV-Norwegian Yacht Voyages and Scenic (main competitors), SeaDream , Windstar (Anschutz Corporation). About 5% of cruise industry's multi-billion dollar business (USD 126 billion total economic impact in 2018) belongs to luxury brands.

The Ritz-Carlton's cruise shipping investment is currently undisclosed. What is known so far is that much of it was financed by the global alternative investment firm Oaktree Capital Management. The firm is experienced in both the hospitality and maritime sectors.

In November 2017, Ritz-Carlton signed an agreement with Rescompany Systems for the implementation of Central Reservations Solution. The cruise booking engine is developed by Rescompany Systems LTD. Its modules provide custom booking solutions for package deals - cruise, tour, hotel, air.

In March 2019, Ritz-Carlton signed a deal with SES Networks ( Luxembourg -based company specializing in satellite communications and network services) to provide fleetwide fully-managed hybrid broadband connectivity for network-enabled enrichment and entertainment media. SES Networks' maritime package combines the low latency of O3b MEO satellites ("medium earth orbit") with the coverage of geostationary SES satellites.

In December 2019, Ritz-Carlton Cruises and Oaktree Capital Management (part of Oaktree Capital Group Holdings) signed a deal to finance the Spanish shipbuilder Astilleros Barreras in order to ensure the delivery of Ritz-Carlton's first ship (Evrima). The cruise company also signed with CESCE (Spanish ECA-Export Credit Agency) to cover newbuild's cost overruns and to secure the second ship's construction. This way, the shipyard was also saved from bankruptcy. Due to the shipyard's financial difficulties, Evrima's delivery was delayed and postponed several times (from November 2019 to August 2022).

In May 2021, Ritz-Carlton launched the "Patron of the Arts Program" (complimentary), with special guests (celebrities as well as local talents) participating in pre-scheduled onboard events - themed on arts (visual and performing), science, literature, gastronomy (also culinary tastings).

Company changes 2022

In early-February 2022 was announced that Ritz-Carlton (via the subsidiary The Yacht Portfolio) had acquired the Hamburg -based company Sea Cloud Cruises GmbH (operating via the travel brand "Sea Cloud Cruises"/ fleet ), adding to the fleet 3x tall-sailing ships.

  • The plan for the brand "Sea Cloud Cruises" was to remain, as well as the company's employees and management team (led by Hermann Ebel/Managing Director) to be kept intact.
  • Later was revealed that only an LoI/letter of intent was signed between both companies, so an acquisition could take place in the future.
  • In late-February 2023 Sea Cloud announced that it is no longer interested in selling.

In late-June 2022 with LVMH was signed an exclusive partnership deal for the shipboard retail shopping experience at "The Boutique" venue.

  • LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton (1987-founded, Paris -based company part of Christian Dior SE) is a French corporation specializing in luxury goods. LVMH was established as a merger of Louis Vuitton (fashion house) with Moet Hennessy. Moet Hennessy was founded in 1971 as a merger of Moet & Chandon (champagne producer) with Hennessy (cognac producer).
  • LVMH's products include ultra-premium brand clothing, footwear, cosmetics, perfumes, fashion accessories, watches, jewelry, spirits and wines.
  • In 2021, LVMH was ranked Europe's most valuable company (USD 329B) with total assets EUR 125,3B and revenue EUR 64,2B.
  • For The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, LVMH also provides exclusive (Ritz-Carlton-branded) merchandise, including apparel, home goods, travel essentials.

Ritz-Carlton's onboard retail services are managed by Starboard Cruise Services (1958-founded, Florida USA-based) which is part of LVMH.

Company changes 2023

In June 2023, Ritz-Carlton signed a partnership deal with Allianz (1890-founded, Munich Germany-based insurance and asset management company). By this deal, The Ritz-Carlton's cruise passengers are provided with Allianz Travel Insurance (via local Allianz Partners) that covers all expenses and also provides support in unexpected events prior or during the voyage. Such cases include cruise cancellations or interruptions, land and air travel delays, missed connections. The deal was signed by Jim Murren (Ritz-Carlton) and Tom Trotta (Allianz Partners USA's VP of Sales).

In August 2023, Ritz-Carlton signed a partnership deal with Candela Mamajuana (2016-founded by Alejandro Russo distillery in Dominicana producing the Candela Mamajuana Spice Rum brand). The partnership resulted in the launch of limited-edition Candela MAREA rum crafted exclusively for the Ritz-Carlton's cruise company. Candela MAREA (introduced on the Evrima yacht) features the 40-year-old "Kirk & Sweeney Gran Reserva Superior Dominican Rum" mixed with honey and spices. Candela MAREA rum (distilled from fresh-pressed Dominican sugarcane juice) and rum-based cocktails can be tasted at various shipboard dining venues as well as at all bars.

Company changes 2024

In July, Ritz-Carlton made executive changes with leadership reinforcements, new appointments and promotions, including Jens Gorka (Shipboard Operations Chief Officer/promoted from Senior VP of Shipboard Operations), Phillip Herbert (VP of Hotel Operations), Andrea Leistner (VP of Procurement & Supply Chain/Hotel and Marine Operations, and IT), Chris Graham (Culinary Director), Frank Koppelkamm (Senior Director of Culinary Operations), Sebastian Seward (VP & General Manager for Asia Pacific).

Ritz-Carlton ships

Initially was planned the three vessels to be identical/sisterships, with max passenger capacity 298, crew capacity 246, volume 26500 GT-tons, LOA length 190 m (623 ft), passenger staterooms 149 (all-balconied). However, the design was later altered and with these specifications was constructed only the first boat (Evrima/by Tillberg Design Sweden).

All passenger staterooms/balcony suites are with tall ceilings and include Duplex Suites and fore-located Owner Suites (each with a huge wraparound balcony with an outdoor Jacuzzi). Other cabin types include Signature Suites, Grand Suites, Loft Suites, with the majority being Terrace Suites. The Lofts are duplexes, with bedrooms on their lower level, built so that the vessel could be all-balcony. Terrace Suites are easily combined to reduce the number of accommodations when the ship is privately chartered.

Ship technology

The first ship ( Evrima ) is powered by MAN marine diesel engines, while the other fleetmates ( Ilma , Luminara ) are LNG-powered . The electric propulsion consists of two ABB Azipods. Both units (Azipod D) are 360-degree azimuthing thrusters ideal for smaller-sized vessels as they require lower installed power.

  • Unit's electric drive motor is installed in the pod and submerged outside the hull, thus allowing more space for passenger cabins. The patented Azipod system also produces less vibration. The thrusters have the ability to turn 360 degrees which increases the ship's maneuverability and allows access to ports without the need of tugboat assistance.
  • The Azipods are part of ABB's medium voltage power plant. It also includes sensors producing real-time data that can be tracked from land-based facilities operated by both ABB Operations Centers and the customer.
  • The Azipod thruster is approx 10% more fuel-efficient in comparison to shaft line propulsion systems. This results in a significant reduction of vessel's operating costs and emissions. The lack of traditional rudders also allows the hull's hydrodynamics to be optimized.
  • "ABB Ability" is a remote diagnostic system using Microsoft Azure (cloud computing). It monitors the vessel's electrical systems and is connected 24-7 to ABB's infrastructure ashore. The system monitors all linked devices and sends real-time data analytics for maintenance (predictive and planned) and online support.

In late-September 2018, ABB contracted Raytheon Anschutz (Singapore-based manufacturer) to provide the ship's Integrated Navigation System "Synapsis NX" (bridge and navigation equipment). Synapsis NX includes autopilot, track control, radars, navigation sensors, communications, multifunctional navigation workstations (with software).

Evrima's shipbuilder was Astilleros Barreras Shipyard ( Vigo Spain ). The keel-laying ceremony for the first vessel ("Yacht 1"/fka Azora) was held on January 11, 2018. The special ceremony was attended by Jose Garcia Costas (shipyard's Chairman and President), Fredrik Johannson (Tillberg Design's owner), Timothy Grisius (Marriott International's Global M&A and Real Estate Officer), Douglas Prothero (cruise company's Managing Director).

The first ship (Evrima) was initially scheduled for delivery in November 2019. Bookings were opened in May 2018. On May 30, 2019, Ritz-Carlton announced the start of the construction of its second ship.

On March 17, 2022, Ritz-Carlton signed the order with the French shipbuilding company Chantiers de l'Atlantique (shipyard in Sant-Nazaire France ) for two LNG-powered superyachts - Ilma (2024) and Luminara (2025). Unlike the Spain-built Evrima, the France-built sisterships Ilma and Luminara are larger as both gross-tonnage/volume (46750 GT-tons, compared to Evrima's 26500 GT-tons), cabins (224 vs Evrima's 149), and max passenger capacity (456 vs Evrima's 298).

Onboard Experience - shipboard facilities and amenities

The yacht cruising experiences include:

  • Unique cruise itineraries around the world
  • Modern, thoughtfully designed interiors
  • Ultra-premium dining (5 venues), including specialty dining by celebrity chef Sven Elverfeld (3 Michelin stars) who presides over Ritz-Carlton's "Aqua" restaurant in Wolfsburg Germany , MDR (140-seat main dining room designed with nooks to look like 10 small-sized restaurants), Asian fusion restaurant, poolside grill, seafood grill. Intimate dining and drinking venues are with small seating capacity and opened around the clock (no assigned seats or fixed dining times). Passengers can eat whenever they want, rather than the traditional set meal times which are customary on other cruises.
  • Other social spaces include the Living Room (the arrival space onboard), serving as a cafe and library. No show lounge or casino are available onboard.
  • The Champagne Bar is an intimate cocktail lounge serving top labels from around the world along with premium Champagnes with caviar pairings.
  • The Humidor is an intimate lounge with fine, hand-rolled cigars and premium cognacs.
  • Destination-based activities (onboard performances by local artists, musicians), itinerary-based gourmet cuisine (including dishes prepared by local chefs). Onboard entertainment includes live performances (jazz and classical) and professional (expert-led) lectures and media presentations. During each voyage, local talent (artists, guest lecturers or chefs) join for various entertainment throughout the trip. Wi-Fi is free.
  • Premium amenities (such as Ritz-Carlton Spa). The spa is operated by Ritz-Carlton and has indoor/outdoor treatment rooms, each of them with its own private balcony. Guests are able to pick if they wish a treatment inside or out. There is also a medical wellness center, full-service Beauty Lounge, and a Gentleman's Grooming Salon. The fitness is an indoor/outdoor spot with equipment inside, yoga and relaxation spaces outside.
  • The ship has whirlpools, as well as deep and shallow pools. An infinity-style pool is located aft, with a current within for exercising (resistance swimming). The ship also features a marina-style watersports platform (aft-location), providing direct access to the water. It is also used for open-air parties and events. A selection of water toys is available for guests to use.
  • Glass doors open to the sweeping staircase leading to the pool deck (located at the aft / on the ship's stern). At the marina are the yacht's sea kayaks and paddleboards. The connection to the outdoors continues with an indoor/outdoor solarium which looks more like a cozy lounge than the usual ship solarium.
  • An aft-located open-air deck space (Marina Bar) with 270-degree panoramic views and covered by a retractable glass roof. It is operated as al fresco dining lounge by day and as a disco nightclub in the evening.
  • Above Sun Deck is the Helideck with a helipad (helicopter landing area used in case of emergency). The initial ship design included an onboard helicopter (to be used for private tours).

Due to fire and safety regulations, most of the onboard spaces are sectioned off and subdivided, with walls dividing restaurants from lounges and bars. Ritz-Carlton ships pioneer an open floorplan concept ("fluid and transparent") designed to "break down the traditional boundaries between dining and drinking areas".

Ritz-Carlton cruise prices include staterooms, multiple onboard dining venues, activities and live entertainment, tips (onboard gratuities), Wi-Fi. Fares vary by season and itinerary.

Ritz-Carlton's cruise loyalty program (Marriott Bonvoy)

Since November 9, 2021, Ritz-Carlton's "Yacht Collection" brand's loyalty program is part of The Ritz-Carlton-owned hotels' loyalty program. The announcement was made by David Flueck (Marriott International's Senior VP, Global Loyalty).

  • For Marriott Bonvoy members striving for "Ambassador Elite" status, cruise fare and hotel package rate are applied toward their annual qualifying spend.
  • Marriott Bonvoy members can accelerate the points earned on their cruise purchase and more when using their co-branded credit cards (JPMorgan Chase and American Express).

Marriott Bonvoy members can additionally extend their pre- and post-cruise vacations, redeeming points at Marriott-owned hotels in various destinations.

First look: Inside the new Ritz-Carlton cruise ship Evrima, which finally debuts this week

Gene Sloan

Evrima is finally here. Really. Or so they say.

The long-delayed debut of The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection , the new cruising arm of luxury hotel chain Ritz-Carlton , will actually happen on Saturday, according to the company. Its first ship, the 298-passenger Evrima, is finally finished and will begin its first sailing.

The brand even sent photos to prove it.

As you can see in the Ritz-Carlton-shot images on this page, Evrima is an upscale, yachtlike vessel with a sleek, sloping front that will be right at home nestled among the megayachts anchored off Monaco or St. Barts.

As the company promised when it announced the brand, the 10-deck-high vessel's interiors have an elegant, residential look designed to appeal to Ritz-Carlton regulars. Among marquee spaces is the top-of-the-ship Observation Lounge, which offers views over the bow from curving, floor-to-ceiling windows. There's also an interior "living room" that will serve as a central gathering point on the ship, photos of which the brand did not provide.

As can be seen in the photos, Evrima's 149 cabins are spacious. They include two-story Loft Suites that measure 611 square feet, not including 81-square-foot balconies.

There also are two massive, 1,091-square-foot Owner's Suites at the back of the vessel with giant, 635-square-foot wraparound balconies.

The company didn't provide images of the Owner's Suites but offered a peek inside a Loft Suite and smaller Grand Suites and Signature Suites. The latter two categories of rooms still are large by cruise ship standards at 587 square feet and 427 square feet, respectively, not including balcony space. All of these suite categories offer living room space with spots for dining, as well as bedrooms.

ritz carlton yacht malta

As can be seen in the photos, there's also lots of deck-top lounge space for sunning, including a back-of-the-ship area with a small pool on Deck 8 called the Mistral Terrace and a forward-looking area on Deck 9 called the Spa Terrace. The Mistral Terrace doubles as a venue for alfresco lunch and dinner, with a seafood bar and prime cuts of meat grilled to order.

Another lounge space called the Marina Terrace is closer to the waterline at the ship's rear-facing marina area.

In addition to a main restaurant called the Evrima Room, Evrima has four dining venues that, notably, include an a la carte restaurant designed by Sven Elverfeld of the three-Michelin-starred Aqua in The Ritz-Carlton, Wolfsburg in Germany .

There also is a spa on the vessel. The line didn't provide images of the Elverfeld restaurant or the spa.

Evrima's first sailing on Saturday will be a seven-night trip from Barcelona to Nice, France, that will include stops in Spain's Balearic islands of Alcudia and Palma de Mallorca, plus an overnight in St. Tropez, France.

Whether the ship really is ready to run at the sort of luxury level Ritz-Carlton fans expect remains to be seen. The ship has been plagued by construction problems for years, resulting in a succession of eight delays that have pushed back its arrival by nearly three years. The company initially used a shipyard to build Evrima that had little experience constructing upscale vessels .

ritz carlton yacht malta

The repeated delays have led to waves of trip cancellations over the past three years that have left would-be customers frustrated. TPG's inbox is full of emails from passengers on canceled sailings that feel let down by the company.

Assuming Evrima does begin sailing on Saturday, it will be debuting nearly 33 months behind schedule — a backup of a magnitude rarely seen in the cruise shipbuilding space. It was originally scheduled to begin sailing in February 2020.

ritz carlton yacht malta

Evrima is just one of a number of relatively small, yachtlike cruise ships that are coming to market as hospitality brands see demand for intimate, high-end vessels. Emerald Cruises earlier this year unveiled its first yachtlike ocean cruise vessel , the 100-passenger Emerald Azzurra, after several years of only operating river ships. And just last month, luxury hotel chain Four Seasons announced plans to launch a yachtlike, 190-passenger cruise vessel by 2025.

Luxury cruise operator Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours also is in the midst of adding high-end, 228-passenger, yachtlike vessels .

Rising 10 decks high and with capacity for nearly 300 passengers, Evrima is notably bigger than the vessels operated by these other brands, though it still has a yachtlike shape.

Evrima is just the first of several vessels that Ritz-Carlton plans for its new cruising arm. In March, The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection announced that two more vessels for the brand would be built at the Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard in St. Nazaire, France — a shipyard with far more experience in cruise shipbuilding than the shipyard that initially built Evrima.

The two new Ritz-Carlton vessels, which will be bigger than Evrima, are scheduled to debut in 2024 and 2025, respectively.

Affluent travellers are prioritising non-traditional experiences, according to Marriott International’s president of luxury

“Luxury consumers are looking for unique, one-in-a-lifetime experiences and they want to try them with brands they trust to deliver on that expectation,” says Tina Edmundson, Marriott International’s president of luxury.

Marriott International’s President of Luxury Tina Edmundson luxury portfolio comprises 626 properties across 71 countries and territories, spread among eight brands: The St Regis, Ritz-Carlton, Ritz-Carlton Reserve, Bvlgari Hotels & Resorts, Edition, The Luxury Collection, JW Marriott and W Hotels. Once, when Tina Edmundson was a young child travelling with her family, she secretly snuck into the lounge on a 737 plane. “Back in those days, airplane lounges existed on the upper deck. It was such a fun adventure,” recalled Marriott International’s president of luxury. She has many such memories, having come from a family deeply rooted in travel.

“Both my parents worked for an airline, and today, my brother is a pilot with Air India. Growing up, we travelled the world, which I loved. My parents believed that travel provided the best education, and every summer, we took trips abroad. I developed a fascination with hotels and the hospitality industry at a young age,” the Mumbai-born Edmundson elaborated.

Prior to taking on her current role in 2023, she held a string of management positions over the course of 16 years with the hotel group. A hallmark moment was her involvement in the 2016 acquisition of Starwood Hotels & Resorts into the Marriott fold, making the latter the largest hotel company in the world with 30 brands and approximately 9,000 properties worldwide.

Edmundson’s luxury portfolio comprises 626 properties (including hotels, residences and timeshares) across 71 countries and territories, spread among eight brands: The St Regis, Ritz-Carlton, Ritz-Carlton Reserve, Bvlgari Hotels & Resorts, Edition, The Luxury Collection, JW Marriott and W Hotels.

LUXURY MARKET REPORT

ritz carlton yacht malta

So, what does a president of luxury do? Edmundson’s job is to anticipate and cater to the needs of the thriving Ultra-High-Net-Worth (UHNW) market. “The global market for luxury travel is expected to grow from US$1.1 trillion (S$1.42 trillion) in 2022 to US$2.3 trillion by 2030. As wealth continues to grow, the number of millionaires and billionaires is increasing,” she said.

“These people are no longer just dreaming about travel; they are making their dreams a reality and looking at spending their time and money on the most memorable and meaningful experiences with friends and loved ones.” Edmundson added. In addition, she highlighted that in Asia Pacific alone, demand for travel luxury is forecasted to outpace the supply growth rate by nearly two times in the next four years.

Marriott International’s dedication to grow this sector was reflected in a commissioned report released on Jul 1 , 2024. It identifies expectations and travel preferences that had evolved significantly since the Coronavirus pandemic . The New Luxe Landscapes: Emerging Luxury Travel Trends Asia Pacific Report was made with 1,200 frequent international travellers who primarily travel for leisure. They are the wealthiest 10 per cent of residents across Australia, Singapore, India, Indonesia, South Korea and Japan.

Findings show that 68 per cent of them are planning travels over the next 12 months, with 74 per cent within Asia Pacific. As nearly one third of the Marriott International portfolio is in the APAC region, it is no wonder Edmundson and her team are not resting on their laurels.

TRAVELLING FOR EVENTS AND FOOD

“Luxury consumers are looking for unique, one-of-a-lifetime experiences, and they want to try them with brands they trust to deliver on that expectation. It takes decades to build a diverse and extraordinary portfolio like ours,” Edmundson said.

ritz carlton yacht malta

An example of a one-in-a-lifetime experience is travelling to attend high-profile sporting events or concerts. Case in point: Channel News Asia reported in February that flights and accommodations increased by up to 30 per cent around Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour dates . Seventy per cent of the concertgoers flew in from overseas, according to a CNN article.

“This trend reflects a growing demand for enriching, non-traditional travel experiences,” said Edmundson. Her new luxury-focused organisation is poised to deliver the best of both worlds: It is laser focused on the luxury segment, with the backbone and strength of a powerful engine, systems and programmes. Strategic partnerships and curated events that integrate luxury accommodations with exclusive cultural moments are some results.

ritz carlton yacht malta

Examples include W Hotels’ collaboration with the Cercle Music Festival globally to host events in locations like W Amsterdam and W Rome, and The Ritz-Carlton’s partnership with the Emmy Awards that offer bespoke experiences during award season; the 2023 Venice Film Festival also saw a Ginori 1735 branded takeover at The St Regis Venice.

Apart from events, many people now also travel for food; 88 per cent of The New Luxe Landscapes respondents said that discovering new food or gourmet adventures is ‘important’ or ‘very important’. “High-end gastronomy has emerged as a primary motivator, with a significant number of discerning travellers prioritising the opportunity to explore new culinary frontiers, dine at world-renowned restaurants and savour local delicacies,” said Edmundson.

ritz carlton yacht malta

Understandably so – food is not just sustenance; it is also a cultural product. I had a taste of this at JW Marriort Jeju Resort and Spa – South Korea’s highest-priced hotel with coast-hugging architecture by WATG and nuanced interiors by Bill Bensley. Fine dining may not be a reason for travellers heading to Jeju Island, but it may soon be with the hotel’s Flying Hog restaurant whose creative menu reinterpreting indigenous ingredients such as Heukdwaeji (Jeju black pork) and premium Jeju tangerines sets a high benchmark.

CARE FOR THE EARTH

Travel has become more than just an escape. This is especially true of millennial and Gen Z travellers that prioritise experiences over possessions, observed Edmundson. “For today’s UHNW travellers, the meaning, motives and methods behind their experiences are evolving with the world around them, leading them to seek out destinations and initiatives that align with their values and focus on sustainability.”

As the world’s largest hospitality organisation, Marriott International’s environmental impact through meaningful travel experiences cannot be underestimated. “The Ritz-Carlton’s Community Footprints programme exemplifies this commitment, empowering hotels to address local needs such as education, social causes and environmental conservation, leveraging our global presence and dedicated associates.” Projects include the Etihad Marriott Mangrove Forest initiative that planted 12,000 mangrove trees along the UAE coastline to enhance sustainability and resilience.

ritz carlton yacht malta

Guests not only want to know this information but also contribute personally. In The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands, owned by Singapore’s Pontiac Land, they can join in the removal of ghost nets through drone research, and assist marine conservation efforts through its Community Footprints programme. The fin-to-tail cuisine at Singapore Edition’s FYSH restaurant that minimises food waste is another example Edmundson provided.

Understanding how to help one’s environment comes with appreciating the vastness and beauty of nature. The recent trend on glamping allows for that, with UHNW guests discovering remote locations in luxury. The Ritz-Carlton Reserve, which Edmundson describes as “the crown jewel of our luxury portfolio” offers such transformative memories in far-flung spots, one being the Rissai Valley in Jiuzhaigou along the Tibetan plateau. “This intimate luxury hideaway offers guests rare insights and immersive experiences with the natural surroundings and traditional Tibetan village life,” said Edmundson.

Another exotic destination is The St Regis Red Sea Resort, which opened in January 2024. Designed by Kengo Kuma, it is the Middle East’s first private island resort. Closer to home, the mid-year opening of Ta’aktana, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa in Labuan Bajo, situated at the entrance to UNESCO-recognised Kodomo National Park in eastern Indonesia, continues Marriott’s commitment to promoting lesser-known locations.

TRAVELLING THE SEAS

Beyond where to go, the discussion has also moved on to how to get there. Those with sufficient time can take to the seas with The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection. “This venture not only introduces our loyal customers to a new dimension of our brand, but also attracts new guests seeking unparalleled quality and service. Expectations are high for our luxury guests who choose to stay with us; on board, guests have access to exclusive programming on and offshore, one of the highest guest-to-crew ratios, and ample space per guest, ensuring personalised attention and the perfect environment to unwind and savour the journey,” said Edmundson.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection (@ritzcarltonyachtcollection)

She herself has encountered this mode of slow travel. “I recently attended the Monaco Grand Prix and had the privilege of staying aboard Evrima, the inaugural yacht from The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection. It was truly exceptional – a remarkable moment for our brand, blending the thrill of the Grand Prix with the unparalleled elegance of a Ritz-Carlton experience on the water,” Edmundson said.

She elaborated that the growth of this sector shows no signs of slowing down. “According to the 2024 Virtuoso Luxe Report, HNW travellers are increasingly drawn to the seclusion and personalised experiences offered by private services, such as private aviation, yacht charters, and exclusive-use villas and suites. The luxury cruise market has surged to €4 billion (US$4.42 billion; S$5.77 billion). This is more than double of 2022, underscoring strong consumer interest in this emerging ultra-luxury segment and unconventional voyages.”

ritz carlton yacht malta

Not surprisingly, Marriott International has stiff competition, with Four Seasons, Aman and Regent taking to the seas in 2025. To meet demand, The Ritz-Carlton will launch a superyacht, Ilama, in September 2024, and the Luminara in 2025. The latter marks the fleet’s expansion into the Asia-Pacific region, starting in December 2025 with journeys involving 28 ports across 10 countries.

Exclusivity and exotic locales aside, I ask Edmundson what truly defines a luxurious stay for most guests. She refers to a New Luxe Landscapes statistic stating that 80 per cent of affluent travellers define luxury travel as being surrounded by refined craftsmanship and exquisite design. Correspondingly, 83 per cent of these travellers consider a hotel’s architecture and design in booking their stay. W Hotels’ new design playbook, to be implemented across the world including W Singapore, is an outcome.

But beyond beautiful spaces, guests want to feel like they have encountered something truly unique. “In the realm of luxury travel, the mandate for hyper-personalisation has become indisputable and to a certain degree, it’s expected. Today’s discerning travellers anticipate bespoke journeys and seamless service, prompting our brands to elevate their standards to meet those needs,” Edmundson commented.

ritz carlton yacht malta

Here is where the human touch comes into play. Shared Edmundson: “For example at Rissai Valley, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, our Nieba (or personal butlers in the local language) forge genuine connections with guests, orchestrating unforgettable moments tailored to their desires. Through thoughtful gestures and personalised recommendations, they transform each stay into a treasured memory, fostering a desire to return again and again.”

This focus on people has been ingrained in Edmundson throughout her illustrious hotel career. While degrees in commerce at the University of Bombay, and hotel and restaurant administration at the University of Houston’s Conrad N. Hilton School gave her solid grounding, it was on-the-job experiences that cemented this understanding.

“Hospitality thrives on human interaction, and that’s something you can only truly master through hands-on experience,” she reiterated.

ritz carlton yacht malta
