PHI is a 192-foot motoryacht just released from Royal Huisman

Royal Huisman has an established track record of building complex, interesting and distinctive sailing superyachts, including the 184-foot Aquarius and the 190-foot Ngoni . Its just-released Phi is a 192-foot motoryacht that is just as stunning and unique as its sister sailing vessels.

The Dutch yard is being coy about releasing too many details before the yacht is handed over to the owner later this year. Phi ‘s interior by London design firm Lawson Robb is definitely a no-go area, but readers can get a sense of the naval architecture and exterior design through images the yard just issued.

Dutch designer Cor D. Rover, with years of successful designs in both the custom and semi-custom sectors, designed Phi ’s exterior, naming it after a mathematical concept for the Irrational number Phi that has been around since the ancient Greeks. Also known as the golden ratio, Phi goes on forever after the decimal point without repeating itself, with the result that it has gained a reputation for reflecting never-ending beauty and natural harmony. Rover ran with the concept, saying he was inspired by “the galaxy, the ocean’s surface and the underwater world” in forming the design.

How those three big ideas translate physically into the actual design will require a longer explanation from Rover, now sworn to secrecy, but it’s clear that Phi’ s naval architecture by Van Oossanen Naval Architects gives the yacht its long, sleek form. The Fast Displacement XL hull keeps it under the 500-gross ton designation and, according to Royal Huisman, makes it the longest superyacht under 500 gross tons. The design also gives Phi  a respectable top speed, along with increased fuel efficiency.

The design was a challenge to pull off technically, said the shipyard, but Royal Huisman is used to facing complex technical problems. It also faced outsized challenges on its other big motoryacht project, 406, which will be the world’s largest sportfishing yacht once launched. The 171-footer not only looks like an authentic angler’s convertible on steroids, complete with a massive fishing cockpit and billfish fighting chair, but it will also boast impressive top speeds on its way to offshore fishing grounds.

Royal Huisman CEO Jan Timmerman says the shipyard tries to accommodate the big, seemingly fantastical ideas of owners and designers, “rather than trying to persuade them to scale back their ambitions.”

PHI will also come with a matching 118-foot shadow boat, courtesy of the same design team but built at Alia Yachts. Both mothership and shadow boat will be revealed in more detail by the end of the year.

Phi detained in Canary Wharf

The yacht was seized in Canary Wharf, east London, on Tuesday

The UK has seized its first superyacht in British waters as part of sanctions against Russia.

The £38m yacht, named Phi, is owned by an unnamed Russian businessman.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said the individual was not currently sanctioned but had "close connections" to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The UK has introduced a raft of sanctions against Russian individuals and businesses following the country's invasion of Ukraine.

The 58.5m (192ft) Phi was first identified as being potentially Russian-owned on 13 March but its ownership is "deliberately well hidden", the government said.

It added that the company the ship is registered to is based in the Caribbean islands of St Kitts and Nevis but it carried Maltese flags to hide its origins.

The Department for Transport (DfT) would not comment on why it was not naming the individual who owns the yacht.

Transport secretary Mr Shapps said the move was "a clear and stark warning to Putin and his cronies".

"The ship won't be going anywhere for the time being," he said. "People who have benefitted from [Mr Putin's] regime cannot benefit from sailing around London and the UK in ships like this."

The hunt for superyachts of sanctioned Russians

What sanctions are being imposed on Russia?

On its website, the ship's builder Royal Huisman describes Phi - which is named after the mathematical concept also known as the Golden Ratio - as "magnificently sensuous".

The bright blue yacht features what the builders call an "infinite wine cellar", as well as a fresh-water swimming pool and penthouse apartment on the upper deck.

The ship, which was built in the Netherlands, made her maiden voyage last year.

UK officials boarded Phi in Canary Wharf, east London on Tuesday. The vessel was in the capital for a superyacht awards ceremony and was due to depart at 12:00.

The yacht was detained under the Russia (Sanctions) (EU Exit) Regulations 2019. The regulations say the secretary of state "may give a 'movement direction' to any 'ship owned, controlled, chartered or operated by persons connected with Russia'," according to Benjamin Maltby, partner at international law firm Keystone Law.

Yachts count as ships and a movement direction could include detaining the ship, he said.

However, he said the decision to detain a ship could be challenged under human rights law, which gives people the right to "peaceful enjoyment" of their possessions.

A successful challenge could see the owner demanding compensation, starting at the cost of chartering a similar yacht, which would be around £250,000 a week, Mr Maltby said.

"If the secretary of state has got this wrong, it could be a very expensive mistake," he added.

Before the war, a superyacht, a megayacht, even a gigayacht was high on the shopping list for super-rich Russians.

Helicopter launch pads, mini-subs, swimming pools and missile defences all added to the impression of dazzling wealth and power.

But those boats are not just toys, or status symbols, but floating stores of value.

A number of Russians have sailed their ships out of EU waters, before sanctions could bite.

For instance, Roman Abramovich's two immense yachts, Eclipse and Solaris are in Turkey - safe from the sanctions imposed on him in the UK and EU.

While many of these boats have a price tag far in excess of £100m, they're relatively small compared to the total value of Russian sanctions.

But detaining them represents a symbolic blow against the ultra-rich lifestyle that Russian oligarchs once enjoyed.

It now presents European authorities with a challenge: What do you do with a confiscated superyacht that needs millions of pounds'-worth of maintenance every year to keep it seaworthy?

The DfT worked with the National Crime Agency and Border Force Maritime Investigation Bureau to identify and detain the vessel.

The department, alongside law enforcement agencies, is also looking at a number of other vessels.

The UK, US and EU have all said they will target superyachts linked to sanctioned Russians, and at least eight have been seized so far - by authorities in France, Italy and Spain.

For example, at the beginning of March French authorities seized a yacht owned by Igor Sechin, boss of Russian state energy company Rosneft.

More yachts remain on the move or moored in places that are currently beyond the reach of sanctions, including the Maldives.

Royal Huisman

ROYAL HUISMAN’S PHI IS READY TO SHINE

…in Vollenhove, The Netherlands. Developed and constructed below 500GT, PHI is by far the longest motoryacht in this category, based on current Classification rules.

PHI is a magnificently sensuous motor yacht from the drawing board of Cor D. Rover, who has based the general concept, exterior design and interior layout on many in-depth conversations with the owner over a period of years. Relating inside and outside to the ”sectio divina” or the Golden Ratio, PHI is the formula that governs the continuation of dimensions and shapes in natural proportions throughout the design. The PHI philosophy and deck levels are subsequently focused on three themes: the galaxy, the ocean surface and the underwater world.

PHI’s (still mostly secret!) interior design and styling are defined by the London-based studio Lawson Robb. Her naval architecture is by Van Oossanen Naval Architects. Their specially developed Fast Displacement XL hull form allows this yacht to be long and sleek, yet still remain under the 500 GT mark.

Owner’s Representative Guy Booth commented: “All of us involved in the creation of PHI feel a sense of privilege to have had the opportunity to contribute to this innovative project. The co-operation between the owner’s team, the architects, the designers and everyone at Royal Huisman has been exceptional. We can be justifiably proud of what we have achieved.”

Within the superyacht sector PHI’s fine – and therefore very fuel-efficient – hull lines, together with her very low profile, are considered to be a great challenge to engineer and build. But with its immense experience and track record of innovation in delivering over thirty low-profile and award-winning custom sailing superyachts, Royal Huisman and is not remotely intimidated by such projects.

As Royal Huisman CEO Jan Timmerman explains: “Just take a look at our two current motoryacht projects: project 403, PHI, and project 406, a unique 52m / 171ft sportfish yacht that will become the largest of its kind in the world. The individual aspirations and challenges of each of these projects were seen to be well outside the comfort zone by some yards. With the benefit of expert advice, each of these owners brought their highly distinctive individual projects to Royal Huisman, where fresh opportunities for creative problem-solving and innovation were enthusiastically welcomed.

So what gives us so much confidence in Royal Huisman’s capability to build exceptional motoryachts? Here are two good examples of the ‘edge’ Royal Huisman has to offer. First, the expertise we have acquired from our unrivalled 55 years’ experience in aluminium construction. This enables us to maximise performance and efficiency  through compact, lightweight and high strength engineering. Second, our ability to design and install complex operational systems in restricted volume hull areas provides the owner with more net space for amenities and further increases efficiency.

Add to that a can-do mentality, seeking to optimize and enhance the ideas of the owner, their architects and designers, rather than trying to persuade them to scale back their ambitions to what the shipyard is accustomed to delivering. We think that’s a pretty good combination!”

PHI is scheduled for delivery later this year and will be supported by a matching 36m / 118ft shadow vessel (also designed by the same designers and constructed at Alia Yachts). Without doubt, both PHI and her fleet will leave a lasting impression…

PHI’s design philosophy and the golden ratio

“Rather than just building a large yacht on a so-called shipyard ‘platform’ to enjoy the pleasures of being at sea, the owner of PHI wanted to build a yacht with a profound underlying story, a deep-rooted knowledge that runs through all aspects of the yacht, from her exterior appearance all the way to internal experience.”

Billionaire Larry Ellison, among world’s richest people, has bought a Florida resort

Ellison is said to have paid millions for the oceanfront resort. the oracle software mogul also bought the biggest residential estate in manalapan and owns most of a hawaiian island, his primary home..

Portrait of Darrell Hofheinz

Billionaire Larry Ellison, who in April 2024 was ranked by Forbes as the world’s fifth richest person, a few months later paid at least $277.34 million for the Eau Palm Beach Resort & Spa in Manalapan, the wealthy Florida town south of Palm Beach , according to the deed recorded Aug. 13 and statement released by the resort.

The price Ellison paid for the oceanfront hotel was undisclosed when the resort announced the sale on Aug. 8.

Ellison, who co-founded software mammoth Oracle, was already familiar with Manalapan. In June 2022, he dropped $173 million of his fortune to buy an ocean-to-lake compound in the same town. That transaction was the largest residential sale ever in Florida.

So who is Larry Ellison? Here’s a quick look at the billionaire.

How rich is Larry Ellison?

On Aug. 8, 2024, the day the Eau Palm Beach Resort & Spa announced the sale to Ellison, Forbes estimated the 79-year-old’s net worth at $159.7 billion.  The next day, Forbes' real-time ranking increased his wealth to $162.9 billion.

How did Larry Ellison get his fortune?

Ellison co-founded Oracle Corp. with two partners in Santa Clara, California, in 1977. Today, the software powerhouse bills itself as the world’s largest database-management company. Ellison spent 37 years as CEO and still holds the titles of chairman and chief technology officer at the company. His ownership stake in the company is reportedly 42 percent.

In April 2024, Ellison announced he was moving Oracle’s headquarters from Austin, Texas, to Nashville, Tennessee.

In a June 2024 earnings call, one of Ellison's focuses was Oracle’s construction of data centers to accommodate the increasing demand for generative artificial intelligence. “We are literally building the smallest, most portable, most affordable cloud data centers all the way up to 200-megawatt data centers, ideal for training very large language models and keeping them up-to-date,” Ellison said during the call.

What about Larry Ellison’s Tesla ties?

Among Ellison’s most well-publicized stock purchases, he invested heavily in his billionaire friend Elon Musk’s Tesla and joined the company’s board in 2018. Ellison stepped off the board in August 2022 but still owns about 15 million shares in the electric carmaker, according to Forbes.

Did Larry Ellison go to college?

Yes, but he didn’t graduate. He dropped out of the University of Chicago and the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, according to Bloomberg and other published reports.

Where’s Larry Ellison from and where does he live?

A native New Yorker from The Bronx, Ellison has lived in the Chicago area and California. But he has said his primary home is on the island of Lanai in Hawaii . He reportedly paid $300 million for almost all of that island 10 years ago. He has also bought homes in Newport, Rhode Island; and California. He has been divorced four times.

What about Larry Ellison’s property in Palm Beach County, Florida?

Ellison's ownership entity bought his Manalapan estate — and part of nearby Bird Island in the Intracoastal Waterway — in June 2022 from a trust controlled by a fellow software billionaire, Jim Clark. In all, the estate and its island measure more than 22 acres.

The property straddles both sides of South Ocean Boulevard, with a tunnel beneath the roadway connecting the larger oceanfront parcel with the one that fronts the Intracoastal Waterway.

The residential purchase in Manalapan followed another one in Palm Beach County. In April 2021, a company linked to Ellison is paid a recorded $80 million for an oceanfront estate on 6½ acres in the Seminole Landing community  near North Palm Beach. That estate is about 27 miles away from the property Manalapan estate.

What are Larry Ellison’s plans for the resort hotel he bought in Florida?

Ellison plans to make improvements to the Eau Palm Beach Resort & Spa, according to the August 2024 statement announcing his purchase . But the statement did not provide any specifics.

One of several hospitality properties in Ellison's real estate portfolio, the 8-acre Palm resort and hotel at 100 S. Ocean Blvd. features seaside swimming pools, a 42,000-square-foot spa, 32,000 square feet of meeting space and several restaurants. Eau Palm Beach has consistently earned high ratings from travel magazines and hospitality organizations.

Ellison bought the Mediterranean-style, 300-plus room resort from the London-based Lewis Trust Group, which had owned the property since 2003. When the Lewis family bought the resort, it was a Ritz Carlton branded property but that relationship ended in 2013.

In addition to co-founding Oracle, Ellison has been involved in a variety of luxury hospitality ventures. His portfolio includes the Four Seasons Resort Lanai, Sensei Lanai, Nobu Ryokan Malibu, Nobu Hotel Palo Alto, the Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe, and Sensei Porcupine Creek.

What about Larry Ellison’s politics?

On May 20, 2022, The Washington Post and other outlets reported that Ellison, who has supported conservative Republican causes, took part in a call on Nov. 14, 2020, with Sen.
