Sports | Sanford Burris skippers Maverick to record time in Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac

Boats participating in the Race to Mackinac pass by Navy Pier at the start of the race on Saturday, July 13, 2024. (Vincent Alban/for Chicago Tribune)

That was 1 hour, 6 minutes and 11 seconds faster than the record set by Roy P. Disney aboard Pyewacket in 2002.

The Maverick crew celebrated briefly as it crossed the finish line between Mackinac Island and the Round Island Lighthouse on Sunday. It then kept sailing as part of the “Super Mac” race, a combination of the Chicago Mackinac and Bayview Mackinac races that continued into Lake Huron for a total of 496 nautical miles.

Maverick also claimed the Royono Trophy for being the first racing monohull to finish the 115th edition of the race, which is sponsored by Wintrust. Southerly winds and overnight storms created the perfect conditions for an incredible downwind race.

Burris, from Kirtland, Ohio, is co-owner of the carbon fiber Andrews 80 along with William and Ward Kinney. Burris sails with his sons and many longtime friends. Also among the 20-member crew is Evolution Sails founder Rodney Keenan.

“I will tell you from my perspective, I wish the record had lasted longer, but these things are inevitable,” said Disney, a grandnephew of Walt Disney. “Given how long it took to break that record shows how difficult a course it is and what a classic sailboat race it is.”

Why the Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac remains one of sailing’s most storied competitions

Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac

  • June 8, 2022

By Alyssa Haduck Medill Reports

The Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac is anything but normal.

After 112 years, the July competition remains the world’s longest freshwater sailboat race, with participants trekking 333 miles, or 289.4 nautical miles, from Chicago’s Navy Pier to Mackinac Island, Michigan. But that’s where the consistency ceases.

“You’re going to the same place,” sailor Sam Veilleux said, “but something different happens every time.”

While Lake Michigan’s ever-changing atmosphere makes the race impossible to predict, race organizers and sailing crews are currently doing what they can to prepare. Veilleux, who also serves as the race chair, is leading a team of 20 volunteers — along with the staff at the Chicago Yacht Club — in identifying officials, organizing incoming entries and finalizing event contracts.

The race generally attracts more than 300 boats crewed by more than 3,000 participants ranging from serious sailors to leisure boaters, but this year’s race is already on pace to become one of the largest in recent history, Veilleux said. He suspects the pandemic has driven an increase in interest in the event, which was canceled in 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions.

The contest’s fastest recorded time is just under 24 hours, but it can take up to three days for crews, no matter their skill level, to complete the race — an experience Veilleux knows all too well.

“There are challenges, there are storms, but probably more frustrating than that is sitting there with no wind, swatting flies and eating warm sandwiches,” he said. “It’s not just a physical challenge, it’s a mental challenge.”

Despite these struggles, competitors keep coming back for more.

“I’ve done this race six times, but I’m on the low end of the spectrum,” he said. “Some of the guys that I’ve raced with have done it 40 times.”

One such sailor is Angela Graham, who has participated in 33 Mackinac races. She began competing at a time that preceded today’s technology, remembering when race participants would line up at a payphone after days on the lake to call home and report their results.

But Graham’s extensive experience has earned her a place in the Race to Mackinac hall of fame: the Island Goat Sailing Society. In fact, Graham is commodore, or president, of the club that serves to celebrate those who have sailed in at least 25 Mackinac races.

While the moniker may suggest the Island Goats are so named for their greatest-of-all-time status, the label actually harkens back to early sailors’ odorous similarity to these animals.

The organization was founded by three sailors in 1959 and has grown to more than 350 active members and 500 all-time. While these race participants have each encountered their fair share of weather woes, Graham said competitors have endured particularly brutal conditions in recent years.

“There’s almost always a point where you’d rather be someplace else,” she said.

Few understand Lake Michigan’s climate better than Chris Bedford, who has been studying the lake’s weather patterns for decades as a meteorologist specializing in competitive sailing. Bedford has been the Race to Mackinac weather coach for nearly 20 years, providing generic forecasts to all teams and tailored recommendations to clients who must become their own meteorologists once out in the unpredictable waters of Lake Michigan.

“The cool thing about this race, in my opinion, is it has elements of both a local coastal race and an offshore ocean race,” Bedford said, referencing Lake Michigan’s unique size and shape. “They’re two different problems from a weather forecasting standpoint, but in this case, they’re both happening at the same time.”

Even with its chaos, the lake hosts some of the race’s most awe-inspiring moments, connecting competitors with the elements like little else can. These memories motivate sailors like Graham to return year after year.

“Being out in the middle of the lake and seeing the stars at night, or getting close to the island and smelling the pine trees, there’s just something about that,” she said.

And while Veilleux still faces weeks of coordination ahead, both as race chair and as a crew member, he puts in his hours on land looking forward to the promise of peace on the lake.

“You see the sun come up in the morning, the smell of coffee brewing — it’s great to get away from it all,” he said.

Chicago Mackinac: One for the books

Published on July 16th, 2024 by Editor -->

With a record-setting pace, storms, dismastings, and a man overboard, the 115th Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac presented by Wintrust had it all in 2024.

Awards recognized 22 section winners across the Mackinac Cup (awarded to the smaller boats), the Mackinac Trophy (larger boats), Doublehanded Division, and Cruising Division (Whitehawk Trophy). Plus a new trophy was presented – the Mark H. Baxter Trophy, awarded to a first-time boat.

Bringing ‘home’ the hardware across the divisions are:

• Royono Trophy (first racing monohull to finish): Maverick, Sanford Burris, Ward and William Kinney • Whitehawk Trophy (Cruising): Roxy, Don Condit • Doublehanded Division: Exile, Andy Graff and Scott Eisenhardt • Mackinac Cup: Erica, Brian Kazcor • Mackinac Trophy: Natalie J, Philip and Sharon O’Neill III • Mark H. Baxter Trophy (awarded to first timers): Hooligan, Trey Sheehan (Mackinac Trophy); Nyctosaur, Mark Fruin (Mackinac Cup); Seaquel, Thomas Paine (Cruising); 18 Degrees, Joe Turns (Doublehanded).

Maverick, the Andrews 80 co-owned by Sanford Burris, Ward and William Kinney, earned headlines as not only the Royono Trophy winner (first racing monohull to finish), but the new Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac race record holder, eclipsing Roy E. Disney’s 22-year-old record on Pyewacket ( full report ).

The 20-member crew completed the 289 nm course in 22 hours, 24 minutes, 23 seconds, shaving off more than an hour from Disney’s time of 23 hours, 30 minutes, 24 seconds.

After their start on July 13,  the racing sailboats had all arrived at Mackinac Island by late afternoon Monday (July 15). For context, finishers are typically arriving throughout Monday night and into Tuesday. This year, before Monday’s sunset, the Race Committee had fired its last finishing cannon.

This year’s Race wasn’t without its drama. Storms ripped through the fleet on Saturday evening (July 13), and wrought havoc with many boats suffering equipment damage. Three boats lost their masts (all crew safe), and there was a successful man overboard recovery ( full report ).

In recognition of John and Marian Hoskins’ crew on board the Santa Cruz 52 Madcap, which rescued Callisto’s crew who fell overboard during a spinnaker takedown, US Sailing expedited a review and awarded the Madcap crew the Arthur B. Hanson rescue medal for outstanding seamanship, watchkeeping, and situational awareness resulting in the rescue of a fellow sailor.

“What a race,” said Winn Soldani, chair of the event. “With 10 percent of the fleet and 20 percent of the sailors doing their first Mac, we’re not going to tell them it isn’t always like this. In all seriousness though, this Race has been one for the books.

“Such incredible record-breaking downwind conditions, and what I believe truly sets this special race apart – the camaraderie of our sailors, the team at Chicago Yacht Club and on Mackinac Island. The Mac really is America’s Offshore Challenge and I congratulate every sailor, supporter and follower for joining us on this epic adventure this year.”

250 starters in 115th Chicago-Mackinac Race

250 starters in 115th Chicago-Mackinac Race

13 July 2024 - Chicago, US -  An impressive turnout of 250 boats from throughout the USA and CAN have assembled in Chicago for today’s start of the 115th edition of the Chicago-Mackinac Race . This annual race of 290 miles is the oldest annual freshwater distance race in the world, with a start held off the urban city front of downtown Chicago to finish at the small island of Mackinac that lies at the confluence of Lake Michigan and Lake Huron.

The fleet has been divided into 5 divisions: Cruising, Mackinac Cup, Mackinac Trophy, Double Handed and Multihull, with overall and Class (or “Section” as the locals call it) trophies awarded in each. Scoring for all monohulls uses the ORC rating system, now in its third year of use at this event, with the fastest boats required to have ORCi certificates.

yacht scoring chicago mackinac

The weather forecast points towards a downwind start to this race, with a southerly breeze starting out light but building throughout the day and evening, so ratings from the Chicago-Mac Downwind course model have been chosen to score this race. The downwind conditions are favorable for good progress of the fleet on the race course, but will probably not be strong enough to challenge the course record of 23H 30M 34S set by Roy Disney’s PYEWACKET in 2002.

Nonetheless, the fastest boats in the 103-entry Mackinac Trophy Division will be the 12 entries in Section 1, along with the 9 entries of GL 52’s. This group is highly competitive, with numerous generations of TP 52’s that have raced actively in the Great Lakes and beyond.

This year there are 25 entries that have chosen to lengthen their offshore experience from 290 miles to 495 miles in the 2024 Super Mac Race. They will use the finish line at Mackinac Island as a scoring gate, continue to sail east into Lake Huron and then south to another finish line at the southern end of that lake at Port Huron.

There are 5 sections in this race, ranging from Turbos to a Cruising class, and all will likely remain there a few days more to race back to Mackinac in the 100th Bayview Mackinac Race that starts on July 20th . This milestone race as a massive turnout of 332 entries and will also be rated and scored using ORC.
