Smooth sailing: Junior sailors test their sea legs

Jr. sailors developing their sea legs.

Junior sailors cruise around the Kennebunk River basin, just beyond the bridge into Kennebunkport, as part of the Arundel Yacht Club lessons.

It's 8 a.m., and while the rest of Kennebunkport is just coming to life on this overcast Friday morning, nine junior sailors are warming up their sea legs.

Sailing lessons at the Arundel Yacht Club start this morning start with a quick stretch. Sailing Director Chelsea Leighton then brings the group inside the lodge for a five-minute review of sailing terms — "sheet in," "ease out," "1-2-3 tacking" and "jibing" — because she knows their minds are already on the water.

"OK guys, grab your dagger boards and tillers, and let's head on out!" says Leighton, to cheers from her skippers.

They're only the second lesson into this Beginner 2 session, but the kids, ages 7 to 11, already know the drill. It's all hands on deck to collect and load the motorboat that will ferry them up the river to the dock and the 8-foot Optimist sailboats.

Like the river this morning, the kids are quiet on the ride up the Kennebunk, past boats like "Holiday" from Colorado, "Salt Wind" from Kennebunkport and the intriguingly named "Conflict."

Just past the metal bridge, the "Optis" await. The motorboats dock and, again, the students waste no time in getting down to business. In a matter of a few action-packed minutes, nine white sails fill the river basin.

They're tacking, jibing and otherwise trying to fill their sails, which — by looking at the lifeless American flag on shore — is no small feat today.

"No skulling, keep it straight. You'll go faster!" calls out Leighton from her motorboat. "No bumper boats, guys! It's not good for the boats."

As the sailors tack and jibe, Leighton, 20, motors her own boat alongside the kids as sailing instructors Sam Scribner, 16, and Mary Egan, 15, both in their second year teaching here, monitor the kids from a second motorboat.

The classes are timed to coincide with high tide and now, around 9 a.m., the basin is full but still the current is drawing the boats away. Sophia and her sister Lily Calve are drifting toward the bridge.

"I know the current is challenging; I know it's hard, but you're doing great," Leighton calls out.

Behind her, Eliot Snow, 10, makes an announcement. "I got wind! I got wind!" he yells.

"Eliot, don't stand up. You're going to block the wind!" reminds Leighton.

Meanwhile, John Cain, 9, is struggling with a tipping boat.

"Try to sit on the other side of the boat, opposite your sail," Leighton calls out. "It's a balance thing."

On her right, Peyton Whitney, 10, quickly shifts her weight from left to right to avoid swamping.

"This is Peyton's second session and you can tell," says Leighton, a lifelong sailor herself from Cape Elizabeth. "I think it's so good to have that continuity. It really helps to have a couple weeks under their belts."

As the kids practice their skills, the wind picks up and the sun is burning off the morning clouds. For a moment, it's smooth sailing.

"Their sails are full, which you like to see," says Leighton during a lull in the action.

Then Eliot loses a red Croc shoe overboard. Conor Stevens narrowly misses Ricky Calve and his partner Oliver's boat.

And so the lessons continue. "Always tiller toward trouble," says Leighton.

With the kinks out of their sails now, it's time to put their skills to the test on an obstacle course.

"When I blow the whistle once, go ahead and tack (tiller toward sail). When I blow the whistle twice, jibe (tiller away from the sail)," says Leighton.

Then it's "beach ball tag" among boats.

And their final challenge of the day? A race against time and the tide. Dangerously close to low tide now, they're only in a few feet of water and still have to de-rig, secure the boats, and hit the river. They know the drill, and in a matter of minutes they're back at the 52-year-old riverfront club.

"It's a real confidence booster with real tangible results," said Claire Julian, a sailor and an Arundel Yacht Club volunteer, back on shore. "It's very empowering. I mean, who doesn't want to be a captain of their own boat, even if it's only an 8-foot boat?"

"There's some kids where it's just something to try, and then there are some kids who become absolutely hooked," said Claire.

The final session for junior sailing lessons at the Arundel Yacht Club runs Aug. 10 to Aug. 27. Times vary according to the tides. Fees range from $100 to $175, depending on experience (classes include beginner, beginner 2, intermediate and advanced). Thr

Youth Training Camps to be held in Florida and California in late November

BRISTOL, R.I. (September 19, 2024) – US Sailing invites youth racing sailors in the youth worlds classes: ILCA 6, Formula Kite, iQFOiL, i420, 29er, and Nacra 15 to apply for an invitation to the US Sailing Youth Racing Camps presented by Risk Strategies. For the first time, this annual Thanksgiving training camp will be available on both coasts, with the East Coast Camp taking place November 23-26 at Miami Yacht Club in Miami, FL, and the West Coast Camp taking place November 25-27 at Alamitos Bay Yacht Club in Long Beach, CA.

“We are excited to add the 2028 Olympic venue in Long Beach to the fall camp schedule and to get more sailors and coaches involved on both coasts” said John Pearce, US Sailing Youth Racing Director.

The 2024 US Sailing Youth Racing Camps are presented by Risk Strategies, Official Marine Insurance Partner of US Sailing and the US Sailing Team. “Continuing our support of the US Sailing Team at all levels, Risk Strategies is thrilled to also support the next generation of sailors at the upcoming high level youth training camps in Long Beach, CA and Miami, FL.” said Whitney Peterson, Risk Strategies Director of Marketing and Partnerships.

The format of the camps brings together top youth sailors and coaches in a collaborative and competitive environment, promoting information sharing and resource optimization. Sailors attend with their own team/regional program coach, and US Sailing coaches lead training for the athletes and coaches in each Class. This hybrid format combines a regatta competition environment with collaborative training, allowing sailors and coaches to try new things and get immediate feedback.

Interested sailors can review the Notice of Clinic on the event registration pages for details. Over 100 sailors have earned an invitation based on their performance at major regattas this year, such as US Sailing Championships. Sailors who have yet to qualify with recent performance criteria, as well as international sailors, may request an invitation via this link by October 1 st to be considered for a discretionary invitation.

“It is ambitious to host two simultaneous camps this year, but we aim to bring top level learning and competition to each region and have shifted the schedule so families can enjoy their holiday,” remarks Phil Muller, Youth Performance Manager at US Sailing.

“This annual camp is our opportunity to come together as a nation and push the level of focus and training to make gains in upcoming international competition. I’m eager to announce our coaching and guest speakers roster in the coming weeks,” says Muller. “This year we are thrilled to support foiling classes, iQFOiL and Formula Kite, in Miami and Long Beach. Coming off the back of a bronze medal in boys iQ FOiL at the Youth World Championships this past summer, we want to keep the momentum of these foiling classes.”

“Miami Yacht Club is a familiar venue and has been an excellent host of this annual camp and most recently our U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Sailing in early 2024,” added Muller. “Alamitos Bay Yacht Club is a great collaborator with US Sailing and a strong supporter of high-level racing on the west coast, and we are thrilled to expand our clinic schedule to their venue this fall.”

Details, Notice of Clinic, and registration for invited sailors are available here:

The Ropewalk

During 1957, the Arundel Yacht Club leased the Agnew property on the Kennebunkport side of the Kennebunk River. It used this dock until the winter of 1958-1959 when it signed a three-year lease agreement for the Ropewalk, which was owned by Harrison Fuller. At that time, the building was perpendicular to the river and produced rope. Over the next few years, the club made many improvements to the building and rest rooms, including a kitchen and new pier. After purchasing the building it was turned and moved to its present location.

Our members volunteer to help with the upkeep and repairs needed to keep our historic building and grounds safe, functional and a wonderful place to enjoy family, friends and fellow members.

Adult Sailing School

Ever thought of being on the waters of Lake Michigan, lazily enjoying the sights of the shoreline or sharing the excitement of racing with other boats? Here is your chance to learn to sail and skipper a sailboat. CCYC’s 4 week Adult Sailing School will teach you to sail with hands-on experience out of Montrose Harbor.

US Sailing Certified Instructors will teach you (to):

  • Skipper and direct a boat
  • Steer by the wind
  • Tack and Jibe
  • Leave and Return to a dock
  • Right of Way rules
  • Perform Man Overboard drills
  • Marine Terminology

ALL classes are taught in the school’s Rhodes 19 sailboats with 3 adults per class for maximum practice and learning.  The Rhodes is a nineteen foot keel boat that makes an excellent trainer.  It is small enough to give you the feel of a boat and big enough for a safe, comfortable and FUN experience.

Level 1 Classes

Sixteen hours of on the water training will introduce you to the experience of sailing.  You will learn all the essentials, how to prepare the boat for launch, how to set up the rudder and sails, how to steer and turn the boat, how to steer by the wind, and how to tack and jibe, set the sails, rescue someone overboard and leave and return to the dock.  You will be in all three positions of the boat, skipper, foredeck and mainsail trimmer. You will also learn marine terminology and the five points of sail. You will leave with a love of sailing.

Level 2 Classes

This class will help you integrate all your skills so that they come naturally and you can take a boat out on your own. Your skills in managing the jib, trimming the main and steering the boat will come together as you learn to “think like a skipper”. We will teach you to figure out tacks and angles to get from one place to another, maneuver the harbor coming in and going out, direct your crew mates, adjust the sails, manage the boat for different weather, optimize your speed and use a radio. You will leave with a confidence in sailing and enjoyment of the water.

Private Lessons can be arranged by special request.  Please contact us for availability and pricing

Women On the Water

Women On the Water is a Level 1 class taught by women, for women. We are offering three W.O.W. sessions for the Summer 2024 season.
