The Atlantic 48 Catamaran incorporates many of the desirable features of the Atlantic 55 into a smaller and more affordable platform. With a more powerful sailplan than some of her sisters, the A48 offers performance to satisfy the most demanding sailor while providing the interior features that make the Atlantic Catamarans so user friendly.

The innovative central cockpit of the Atlantic catamarans allows full visibility while sailing and safe and easy access to all sailing controls.

Ample diesel horsepower is provided by twin Yanmar 40 HP saildrives located in separate engine compartments aft.

Construction

Zen was constructed in South Africa by Bongers Marine. Epoxy resin and stitched uni-directional glass laminates with ATC Core-Cell foam core was used for the hulls. Decks, pilot house and major bulkheads are all epoxy/glass cored with PVC foam. This premium quality construction yields superior strength at low weight and has proven exceptionally durable and damage resistant over many decades of use in demanding offshore conditions.

The main crossbeams linking the hulls are composed of uni-directional carbon fiber laminates for maximum strength and stiffness. This also translates to a tighter headstay for better upwind performance.

The dagger boards on Zen are cored fiberglass/epoxy construction passing through fiberglass/epoxy construction trunk with up and down controls leading back to the forward cockpit. The daggers exit the hull through a shallow fin built onto the hull. The fins protect the hull bottom, props and rudders from grounding damage and reinforce the dagger-board trunk minimizing the risk of damage.

Zen's balanced spade rudders are fiberglass composite with solid Aquamet 19 rudder stocks supported with low friction bearings at hull entry.

For added safety, both hulls on Zen are equipped with a collision bulkhead forward. In addition, the engine room is separated from the accommodation space by a watertight bulkhead.

Fiberglass hulls cored with PVC foam with Awlgrip paint finish on the exterior. Skeg keels with dagger boards offering board up draft of 3'2" and board down draft of 7'8". The rudders are semi-balanced spades. Other features include:

Hi there Chris,

I hope you are well! I have been meaning to send you an email to update you on Resolute II - your first Atlantic 48, and to thank you and give you some feedback on your design.

I am writing this from sea, about 70 nm due south of the Galapagos Islands, on the way from Panama to the Marquesas. As i write the boat is rolling along at an average of about 9 knots in 16 knots of wind (9 apparent) at an apparent wind angle 100 degrees. I have up the cruising genoa and full main, and the boat is just loping along.

I am doing this leg (~4,000 nm) on my own, because I have always wanted to try solo sailing, and this seemed the perfect extended leg (nothing to hit!). One week in, i am enjoying it immensely and feel fresh and the boat (touch wood) is running perfectly.

Just to remind you, Resolute was built at Bongers in 2005, and I bought her in 2010. She has since sailed 34,000 miles, including sailing from Australia to the Caribbean via South Africa. We are now on our way back to Australia. Over 40 different friends have sailed on ocean passages, and 'Ressie' has a lot of friends. Remarkably, I think the boat is in much better condition now than when i bought it, and she is incredibly reliable. The engines still only have 2,600 hours on them.

I have been sailing with the World ARC (you may recall I came from Australia with them). This time, again, Ressie just romped away from a fleet which includes some very new and serious 55-60 foot monohulls and including Nica, a Finot Conq FC53 by Knierim that was featured in a recent Yachting World - a planning mono that is half racer and half very uncomfortable cruiser. Sailing Ressie seems just so effortless compared to these modern, very complex boats (e.g. Nica has all its lines running under a false deck.)...

Anyway, it is this kind of sailing that reminds me of what a truly brilliant design this boat is for long distance shorthanded blue water sailing. As a single-handed cruiser, i just can't imagine a better compromise - this boat is very fast, dry, extremely reliable, safe and extremely easy to handle because of the centre cockpit. As you may recall, Resolute has a bowsprit and a furling genoa, and i absolutely love that cruising cutter rig (c.f. with the code zero options that most cats have). I carry the genoa in much stronger winds and get the main reefed early and it makes for comfortable and very safe sailing at night.

I could - as you can see - go on. I find it so hard to reconcile, of course, with the designs of the new production cats which are just so luxurious, but awful to sail. I think perhaps the best way to describe it is that the people who are most impressed with Resolute (and most people are once they see the boat perform and then see how simple it is) are the mono hull sailors. It is a boat that the mono guys 'get' instantly. They see how seaworthy it is, they love that it doesn't look like a block of apartments, they sit in wonder as we glide past them at sea :).

Construction: Hulls, decks and pilot house are constructed from vacuum bagged epoxy resin and multidirectional-fiberglass laminate cored with Core-Cell foam. All exterior surfaces are spray painted with Awlgrip coating. The hull is fighting lady yellow, decks are clipper white . The contrasting boot stripe is marlin blue. Deck, hulls and spars repainted 2018.

Propulsion and Steering: Twin Yanmar 3GM30S (27 HP) diesel saildrive engines. High output (90 amp) Balmar alternators on each engine. Dual instrument panels with tachometer and engine monitoring lights and alarms. Dual Racor 75500FGX30 secondary fuel filters. Dual single lever MicroCommander engine controls mounted at the cockpit helm station and pilothouse. Propellers are Flex-o-Fold bronze geared 3 blade folding type (port prop new 2007) Rudder blades are fiberglass composite, high performance hydrofoil section with solid Aquamet 19 rudder shafts turning in low friction bushings. Capilano hydraulic steering rebuilt 2014. Simrad autopilot with dual controls and displays in cockpit and pilothouse helm station. Daggerboards: (2) cored epoxy/glass daggerboards in epoxy/glass laminate trunks. Boards re-glassed, faired and painted 2018 Up-haul and down-haul controls lead to cockpit

The first, most critical thing to know about boatbuilder Peter Johnstone-who’s now twice entrusted his vision of the ideal offshore cruising catamaran to the highly capable design team of Gino Morrelli and Pete Melvin-is that he absolutely loves to sail. We’re not talking mere infatuation. What we have with Mr. Johnstone is an all-consuming passion for the art and science of propelling waterborne craft by the cleanest fuel of all, a fresh breeze.

When he decided to take his young family cruising a few years ago, Johnstone worked backward from a very simple question: What’s going to be the most fun to sail? Safety, reliability, and seaworthiness would all need to be inherent parts of the solution, of course, but that central tenet was non-negotiable. Why go cruising under sail, he reasoned, if sailing wasn’t going to be a focal point of the exercise?

Johnstone had a pretty good idea of what he was looking for: a big, powerful, no-holds-barred catamaran built of the latest, lightest materials, with ample accommodations, and manageable by a shorthanded crew. Ultimately, he formed his own company to produce such a vessel. When the seagoing Johnstones finally set sail for the Caribbean, they did so on the M&M-designed, South African-built Gunboat 62 Tribe. After returning from his 15-month cruise, Johnstone rolled up his sleeves and got back to boatbuilding in earnest. The Gunboat 48 is the company’s second model in production, and the next will be-yikes-an 80-footer, currently under construction.

Conceptually, the 48 hasn’t wandered far from the precedents established on its larger sibling. The deck layout is centered around a forward cockpit accessed through a door that separates it from the central bridgedeck saloon/wheelhouse/galley. The forward cockpit, as Johnstone acknowledges, wasn’t an original Gunboat idea; noted multihull designer Chris White successfully employed it on his Atlantic series of cruising cats. But it works well on the Gunboat, with almost all the relevant running rigging and sailhandling devices-including a suite of Harken blocks and winches and an array of Spinlock clutches and jammers-stationed at chest level near the base of the towering carbon-fiber spar.

The steering wheel, engine controls, chart plotter, and instruments are a couple of short steps away, tucked just inside the aforementioned front door. So, too, is a handsome folding dining table with veneers of Brazilian mahogany fronting a forward-facing settee that’s plenty inviting when the boat is coursing along under the Raymarine autopilot. When you’re peering out the front and side windows, it’s almost like watching a sailing movie on a big screen, and it’s a very enjoyable view.

In fact, the entire free flowing deck layout maximizes the use of space and is very well thought out. Moving aft, the bridgedeck leads to a roomy “back porch” for dining or drinks, and it’s functional, too, with easy access to the dinghy davits and the molded, transom-mounted steps providing access to the swim ladder and to the twin Westerbeke 35-horsepower Universal diesels.

Below, there’s a pair of staterooms complete with queen-size berths, and a third is equipped with a single. There are also two heads with showers, both stationed forward in the respective hulls.

As befitting a sailboat with a seven-figure price tag, the overall build quality of the vacuum-bagged, oven-cured monocoque hull and deck-a foam sandwich utilizing epoxy, biaxial and unidirectional glass, Kevlar, and carbon fiber-is quite phenomenal. The daggerboards and lifting rudders are also carbon fiber, as are the stringers, ring frames, and crossbeams.

There’s nothing else out there quite like a Gunboat. Peter Johnstone set out to build what designer Bill Lee has called a “hot-rod cruiser,” and he certainly succeeded.

Boat: Harbor 20, Seawind 1370 (2024)	as well. I admire your fortitude in taking on a custom build....would love to know more about how that went. It seems that we only hear the stories of problems and pain. With that high tech rig performance is obviously important to you. Have you considered a big kite for offwind performance when the surface winds are light?

We are selling our 1997 owners version Catana 44 catamaran which has been our family home for the last year. Designed by Lock Crowther and custom built at the French Catana yard, she is the only Catana with a factory-built, protected inside third helm station. I did significant work on this rare classic English catamaran before bringing her up the ICW from Savannah to the Chesapeake Bay. This used 48′ Offshore is a double cabin sundeck motor yacht with a cockpit which is known as the “Yachtfish” model. The full-beam aft deck overlooks the cockpit which is well suited for boarding and swimming. The fly bridge is arranged with the helm forward and lounge seating aft. The 375 horse power Caterpillar diesel engines will cruise this used 48′ Offshore yacht at 16 knots, topping off around 20 knots. The 48’s two-stateroom, galley-down configuration features a saloon dinette opposite the galley. Additional features include a full teak interior, deck doors on port and starboard in the saloon, and an entryway door from the cockpit to the aft cabin which is a convenient feature. The walk-around side decks are quite wide and well protected with raised bulwarks which make for safe passage while underway. A good note is that this is an original owner boat and was ordered from the factory with a specific layout. She has well maintained and updated which results in a great boat at a great value.
