About the Niihau Boat Tour

Holoholo is Kauai’s largest and fastest catamaran. She is 65 feet long and wide enough to offer plenty of comfortable seating and space for you and your belongings. Designed for agility and passenger comfort, it will give you a fast, adventurous ride even at her top speeds. You’ll get to the fun faster for sure!

Built for your safety and comfort, Holoholo has two entry points for snorkelers, a shaded cabin with a large bar area, and two forward nets for sunbathing and relaxing. Licensed to carry 65 passengers, we never take more than 49, so you’ll have plenty of room to sightsee, snorkel, relax, and enjoy.

Say Yes to Adventure!

Holo Holo Charters isn’t the only Kauai company that offers Niihau boat tours, but we were the first! When our company was founded in 1997, boat tours to Niihau were to be our niche—nobody else was doing it. But a unique tour would require a unique boat and that’s why Holoholo has always stood out on the dock.

Anyone with an appreciation for boat design will tell you, Holo’s got “nice lines.” At 65’ long, 24’ wide, and with twin Cummins QSB diesel engines, Holoholo is Kauai’s most spacious and fastest cruising catamaran. Her long, skinny hulls and low center of gravity mean she cuts through the water with speed and stability. Over the years, Holoholo has been scrupulously maintained, frequently updated, and remains the best-looking, most comfortable, and safest tour vessel on all of Kauai. Holoholo is licensed to carry 65 passengers, but we never take more than 49, so everyone has enough room to move, breathe, relax and enjoy!

We’ll kickstart the journey with coffee, tea, juices, and a continental breakfast (eggs, fruit, pastries, and oatmeal) as we cruise out of Port Allen in the sunrise. Your captain will share stories, local history, and legends as we pass Kauai’s west side and get into the world-famous Napali Coast. What you’ve heard is true– Napali is like music for the eyes, and she will absolutely blow your mind with her dramatic cliffs, emerald valleys, cascading waterfalls, vibrant rainbows, spinner dolphins, turtles, and, depending on the time of year, humpback whales. Make sure your phone is fully charged because you might break your camera!

When we’ve reached the northern edge of Napali and we’re all feeling humbled and amazed by nature’s glory, it’s time to start the next phase of the adventure! It’s time to rip across Kaulakahi Channel to the “Forbidden Island” of Niihau and her neighbor to the north, Lehua Crater. Luckily Holoholo cruises comfortably at around 27mph so crossing the channel should take less than an hour.

We’ll poke around these two remote islands, talk some story about Niihau’s fascinating past and present, notice Lehua’s thousands of nesting seabirds, check out her unique geological formation “Keyhole Cave” and then, we’ll find a great spot to stop, snorkel and lunch.

One thing about Niihau and Lehua is that they’re very dry. The lack of rain or running water around these islands (in addition to the lack of any significant commercial activity) makes for water that’s exceptionally clear; visibility is commonly 70 feet or more! Niihau/Lehua is considered one of Hawaii’s very best snorkeling destinations and for that reason, we get a lot of repeat customers (including Kauai locals) on this Niihau snorkeling tour.

Seasoned divers and beginning snorkelers alike will be impressed with the underwater lava formations, bright colorful fish species, monk seals, manta rays, and more. Of course, we have all of the gear you need—masks, snorkels, fins, flotation devices—and we’ll show you how to use it. We’ll have trained crew members in the water with you, on a surfboard, keeping a close eye out for anyone that’s struggling or drifting too far off from the group. Your safety is our #1 concern, from the time we leave the dock until we return.

And hey, if snorkeling isn’t your thing, just kick back and relax. Shoot the breeze, read a book, get some sun, take a nap. Whatever makes you happy. Whatever…. floats your boat?

When we’re all snorkeled out and every single person is safely back on board, it’s lunchtime and we’ll serve up some freshly made lunch provided by our amazing caterers who specialize in creative, local flavors. This is also the time of day (5:00 somewhere?) that we can offer our customers 21+ years old a refreshing adult beverage. We’ve got a nice selection of beers, wines, and seltzers, and the bar’s open all the way back to Port Allen!

When we arrive back, you should feel relaxed, sun-kissed, and satisfied. Our hope is that you’ll have a greater understanding and appreciation for this little corner of the world that we’re so proud to showcase and that we’ve delivered to you and your loved ones an aloha-filled experience, that you’ll always remember fondly.

The "Forbidden Island"

Your captain selects a snorkel spot at the “Forbidden Island” of Niihau, and we provide all the snorkel gear and offer assistance and instruction so you can fully enjoy your time in the water. This is the only Kauai snorkel tour available for you to see Niihau and Lehua, with unique underwater formations, crystal clear water, and a variety of fish and marine life to enjoy.

Ocean Friendly Restaurant

When you have had your fill of snorkeling off Kauai, you get to enjoy a gourmet deli-style lunch, with all the fixins to satisfy even the pickiest of eaters. Assorted beverages including soft drinks, juices, and water are available throughout our Niihau tours. The bar opens after snorkeling with a selection of beer, wine and seltzers to choose from. Our attentive captain and crew are there to provide exceptional service and share the interesting history and stories of Niihau and its people.

"Stunning Napali and Niihau Tour!"

Have done the Napali tour several times but decided to do the extended trip to Niihau which was well worth the time. The snorkeling off the tip of Niihau was by far the best I have seen around Kauai. The crew was top notch, food excellent and we lucked out with perfect weather.

"Fantastic!"

We had a great time seeing the Napali Coast and the weather was perfect so we were able to get close to the caves. We also saw whales and dolphins. The snorkeling was fabulous off of Niihau!

"Great Time on the Boat and Amazing Snorkeling"

It was a great experience that we recommend to anyone. The crew was very nice, we had an amazing snorkeling time at the Niihau island and the time spend on the boat was full of beautiful landscapes. The Napali cost is just wonderful and we even saw some dolphins and sea turtles! It couldn't have been better!

About “Holo Holo”:

A 65’ Catamaran powered by twin 430HP diesel engines. Designed for speed & comfort, we’ll get you to the beautiful sights of the Napali faster & smoother. Holo Holo’s design is wide enough to eliminate any long side-to-side rolling motion and the hulls are narrow to slice easily through the water, resulting in a smooth ride. She can carry 65, but kept to 49 or less, which means more room to sight-see, snorkel, relax and enjoy all that Kauai’s Napali coast has to offer.

Holoholo charters.

2 star rating

Holo Holo Charters ★★★— Port Allen is the point of departure for Holo Holo’s two gleaming catamarans. The 50-foot Leila , licensed for 45 passengers but limited to just 37, serves Holo Holo’s 5-hour, year-round Napali snorkel sails : They’re $159 adults and $119 children 6 to 12, including a continental breakfast and deli lunch, and post-snorkel beer and wine. The 65-foot Holo Holo power catamaran, the island’s largest, was built specifically to handle the channel crossing between Kauai and Niihau, where passengers snorkel in stunningly clear water after Napali sightseeing on 7-hour trips, also with two meals and post-snorkel libations ($215 adults, $149 children 6–12). The 3 1/2-hour Napali Sunset Tour ($129 adults, $109 children 5–12), also aboard the Holo Holo, offers heavy appetizers, cocktails, and, at sunset, a champagne toast. The 2-hour Aloha Sunset Sail ($85) aboard the Leila serves the same fare but heads south to Poipu. Holo Holo also runs Napali snorkel tours from ultra-convenient Hanalei on comfortable inflatable “rafts,” really speedboats with fiberglass hulls, twin motors, stadium seats, and a freshwater shower. The 4-hour trip, including drinks and lunch, costs $199 for ages 6 and older (younger not allowed).

Holo Holo Charters - Na Pali & Niihau Snorkeling Supertour

This is the ultimate ocean voyaging adventure offered daily by Holo Holo Charters. Much more than a simple cruise along Kauai's shoreline, this tour takes you all the way to Hawaii's "Forbidden Isle" – a place few people ever get to see! Niihau Island is privately owned and not open to tourism. So the only way to see this unique Hawaiian island is on a boat tour. Departing from Port Allen Harbor on Kauai's south shore, we'll head north along Kauai's remote west shore. Enjoy a breakfast served on board and look forward to seeing the famed Na Pali Coast, coming up as you round the island's northwestern tip. This beautiful stretch of coastline features stunning views of 3,000-foot tall sea cliffs, waterfalls, sea caves and hidden beaches. The crew will share interesting stories about the history of the Na Pali Coast. Then we'll head across the channel to Niihau, where we'll anchor at a great snorkel spot. Since Niihau has no industry to speak of, the water is pristine and as clear as it can get. The crew will assist and instruct you in snorkeling – relax, float and watch the comings and goings of the aquatic world. After snorkeling enjoy a gourmet deli-style buffet lunch. Choose from a variety of deli meats, cheeses, veggies and breads to make a sandwich work of art. Assorted soft drinks are served throughout the tour and beer and wine are served after snorkeling. Tour Highlights:

Quick Details

Relax on the holoholo charters kauai sunset cruise. mai tais included.

HoloHolo Charters Kauai will take you on a sightseeing sunset cruise unlike any other. Holoholo in Hawaiian translates to “Let’s go!”, Or more accurately, “Let’s go travel around to see what we can find!” This expression perfectly covers the Na Pali sightseeing afternoon on the water. Join friends, family and loved ones on this three and a half hour excursion along the famed coast.

Depart from Kauai’s south side and follow along the stunning sea cliffs leading north. A midafternoon departure allows you to see coastline in all types of light. Seek the valley’s hidden secrets during the daylight. As the daylight retreats, appreciate the gentle rays cast upon the mountainside. Sit back, relax and admire the many different colors of the sky as the sun sets on another perfect day.

HoloHolo Charters Kauai is the smoothest, fastest and most comfortable boat you’ll find for a Na Pali sunset tour. The double hull, 65’ catamaran is built for agility in these channels. From November through May, you’ll catch the Pacific humpback whales at play in their breeding grounds. The incredible creatures put on quite a show!

Should you be in Hawaii during the summer season, not to worry! You might still catch a glimpse of the Hawaiian green sea turtle, flying fish and even the spinner dolphins that frequent the area. As you watch the world float by, enjoy a full appetizer buffet. It includes vegetables with hummus, cheese and meats with crackers, and two different kinds of sliders. The bar is open as well including beer, wine, soda and juice. Enjoy a champagne toast as the sun makes its final descent.

Listen as the Captain and crew tell stories of the island’s history, geology and Hawaiian heritage. The attentive and friendly crew holds comfort and safety as their number one priority.

Come aboard the HoloHolo Charters Kauai catamaran for an afternoon of food and drinks, sunsets and memories.

Overall rating

The boat itself was nice and the crew were lovely. Thankfully there was a place to hide slightly from the waves but it's also where the sea sickness gets really bad. My 14 son started to not feel well then a lady across ... from him got sick so that didn't help. When they say it's an "adventure and you WILL get wet" they aren't lying. There were huge ups and downs and everyone was soaked. The food was good and again the crew was lovely. Definitly not a "smooth dinner cruise"

We loved the sunset sail! Great weather, wonderful staff and tasty food! We had a great time!

Blasty blast

If your looking for some speed, views, drinks, and food this is your tour. Incredible experience prepare to laugh and be wet! Thanks Leila!

Kauai Boat Tours

The story of Holo Holo Charters begins in southern California, with a kid named Kevin that was destined for a life as a waterman. By the age of seven, Kevin had started surfing and sailing. As a teenager, he’d often skip school and spend his days at Newport Harbor–looking at boats, studying boats, talking about boats, helping people on boats…all things boats. The obsession was real.

Kevin is one of those people that just barely graduated high school, despite his brilliant mind. As a young adult, he lived in a van, and worked as an L.A. County lifeguard and building fancy spiral staircases. He wasn’t sure what the future held but one thing was straight—his dream of building his own boat and sailing the world with it.

One fateful afternoon he was hanging around a local boatyard, not surprisingly, checking out the construction of his friend Gordon’s boat, when the course of his life was altered forever. “Why Kevin, you ought to go to Hawaii and build catamarans,” said Gordon in his thick Cockney English accent. Gordon knew of an outfit on Maui that was looking to hire some guys for just that.

Kauai boat builder

Gordon’s suggestion struck a chord and what do you know, a few weeks later, Kevin sailed across the Pacific for the first time. He navigated with a sextant from San Pedro to Lahaina, on his very first boat, a trimaran named Breezin’ , with little more than a pot to piss in. Quite literally– Breezin’ didn’t have a head (restroom).

Things went well for the hard-working young chap and Kevin began making a name for himself in Hawaii’s boat-building community. He hadn’t planned on staying in the Aloha State but hey, the waves were good and he was working, gaining experience and building connections in the field he was passionate about, so there he stayed.

As the years went on, Kevin bounced between Maui, Oahu and Kauai, heading up various projects for different charter boat companies, always envisioning the day he could afford to build his own boat and sail away. Unfortunately, contract work is boom and bust and while he was holding his head above water, he wasn’t making much headway towards realizing that dream. He vividly remembers sitting on the beach one evening, staring off into the horizon, self-doubting and wondering where all this was going.

Kauai boat maintence

Not long after that, opportunity struck! Randomly, an investor from Texas had decided he fancied himself starting a charter boat company on Kauai. He had the dough, but he needed a man on the ground to make it all happen, so he started asking around the state’s charter industry, head-hunting for just the right guy.

He was swiftly referred to Kevin who, by this time, had a solid reputation for being honest, driven and markedly skillful when it came to designing and building charter boats. The Texan and Kevin shook hands in 1996 and Kevin began designing Holo Holo Charters’ flagship, Holoholo . Once his plans were approved and stamped by a naval architect, he ordered the materials and hired a couple of guys. They rolled up their sleeves and built the vessel from scratch, at a former pineapple cannery in Lawai, on the south side of Kauai. After fourteen grueling months, the 60’ motor catamaran was launched, and ran her very first tour in December 1997.

Not long afterwards, a 48’ sailing catamaran came up for sale on Maui. Her name was Leila and wouldn’t you know, she was one of the first boats Kevin built when he’d arrived in Hawaii years ago. Fittingly, Holo Holo Charters purchased her, sailed her over to Kauai and she’s been running sailing charters up and down the Napali Coast ever since.

After four years in business, the Texan decided Kauai wasn’t quite the paradise for him and just as whimsically as he’d come into the picture, he was gone. He sold his half of Holo Holo Charters to Kevin and went searching for greener pastures in the British Virgin Islands. What an angel that guy.

In 2012, Holo Holo Charters purchased two permits to run charters out of Hanalei, and again, Kevin got busy designing two identical boats, specifically for the Napali Coast’s particular conditions. Suitable shop space was unavailable on Kauai at that time, so Kevin made arrangements on Oahu and took his crew to Honolulu to build out two rigid hull inflatable (RHIB) boats. Adventurer II and Adventurer III were launched in 2012 and 2013, respectively, and have since run hundreds of tours each, from Kauai’s iconic north shore.

On Kauai, you’ll notice a lot of lifted, modified, tricked-out trucks, especially Toyotas; it’s a thing around here. On the rear windows of many of these trucks there are decal stickers that say “Built Not Bought.” Doing the work yourself is a source of pride on this island and one that we at Holo Holo Charters certainly identify with. What makes us different? It’s our vessels, that are as sleek and attractive as they are high-performance. They aren’t generic production boats ordered from some faraway land; rather, they were all designed and built with so much heart and soul, here in Hawaii, by Kevin, the little surfer boy who could.

And whatever happened to that guy? Well, let’s just say he’s sailed more than 40,000 blue-water miles on his dream catamaran K ālewa that, of course, he designed and built himself, here on Kauai. He’s not around the company much these days but his passion for boating, resolute spirit and unrivaled work ethic will forever inspire all that we do here at Holo Holo Charters. He’s living proof that dreams do come true.
