• Winter (December to February) : In winter, it’s not too cold, usually staying above 10°C (50°F). It’s also the time when it rains more. If you like being alone and want a cheaper trip, coming during this quieter time is a good idea.

As the only national park situated on a Greek Island, and with an elevation of 5000 feet, you’ll feel like you’re walking on clouds. Admire the exquisite Greek fir and black pine forests and coastal views that stretch on forever.

The rebuilt capital, Argostoli — destroyed in an earthquake in the 1950s — lacks some of the atmospheric charm of older Greek island villages but it more than makes up for it with its bustling shops, cafes, tavernas and working harbour.

The tiled waterfront promenade, the pedestrian Drapano bridge, the fascinating caretta-caretta turtles feeding at the nearby Koutavos Lagoon… all contribute to making Argostoli a truly enjoyable town in which to wile away the hours.

History aficionados can visit the Focas Kosmetatos Foundation, a small museum dedicated to the social and cultural history of Kefalonia housed in one of the few buildings that survived the earthquake. There is also an Archaeological Museum, which was built after the earthquake.

Don’t miss out either on the Melissani and Drogarati caves.

Kefalonia – The Gourmet Experience

Of course being a modern town, Argostoli has a collection of some top-notch restaurants and tavernas, suiting the most discerning palate. And on the island as a whole, there is a staggering array of fine-dining venues and authentic Greek and Mediterranean eateries.

Try the Katavothres Club Restaurant in Argostoli for its spinach pies, cured steaks, squid dishes and strawberry salads. The Olive Lounge, in Lourdas in the south, also serves scrumptious cuisine, as does the Apostolis Taverna, in Skala in the south-east.

Kefalonia — The Nightlife

The centre of Argostoli consist of a large square, the Platia Vallianou, which buzzes with cafes and bars. If you continue up north to the pedestrianised Leoforos Vassileos Giorgiou V (King George V Ave), there are also plenty of bars, cocktail lounges and nightclubs.

Recommended options include Le Sapin Noir, Baroque Le Bistrot, Katavothres Club-Restaurant, Bee's Knees The Bar, Bass Club.

Insider tip Many yachting vacationers gather in Fiskardo, Kefalonia’s most northern port. This village miraculously survived the 1953 earthquake, so you can admire its exquisite Venetian buildings dating back to the 18th century while mingling with a cosmopolitan, well-travelled group of like-minded people.

Last minute excellent charter.

Spiros managed to find us possibly the last available boat in Greece for our last minute charter, the boat evidently came across from Levkas especially for us ! It was the most personal service we have received in many years of chartering., Spiros was very friendly from our first email and answered all of our questions. and the boat was good value too..Shaking hands in a car park could only happen in Greece!. If you have any concerns about moving away from the big companies, have no fear everything was great. We have chartered many times in the Ionian but it made a real change to start and finish in Kefalonia, so much easier to reach our favourite places both on this island and on Ithaka.. We did have a problem with the boat on the last day, the back up service came to our aid and after an unscheduled visit to Fiscardo we were on our way after lunch . The offer of dinner that evening was above and beyond what we would expect and the experience would give us,peace of mind to charter with this company again. Great communication from Spiros who was also flexible with our travel arrangements. . Personal welcome when we arrived and relaxing 1-1 check-in to get our yacht. Mr — August 2019

NO FORGETTING AMNESIA We set off from Agios Efimia, Kefalonia, circumnavigated Ithaki, calling in at some interesting anchorages before sailing to Atoro and then to Kastos before returning via Meganissi Island and a memorable afternoon sail down Steno Ithakis in a rising wind. The yacht, which was called “Amnesia” was anything but unforgettable. The boat was a Cyclades 43.4 Cruiser with (thankfully) slab reefing and roomy accommodation down below. The all-important anchor windlass had recently been replaced and Georgios had equipped the boat for every conceivable circumstance and thankfully nothing went wrong. We had very light winds (apart from the last day of the sailing trip) and had to motor for fairly long distances at times with absolutely no trouble from the engine. This sailing area never ceases to surprise me in its beauty and variety and, despite the busy conditions in some of the harbours we were always able to secure a comfortable berth. We look forward to many more years of sailing with Kefalonia Sailing Holidays and thank Spiros, Bouchra and Georgios. With best wishes from the Wood Family (August 2019)

September 2018 Ionian Cruise

Our first cruise in the Ionian, and what a great time we had. The weather was kind & the boat reliable, well equipped and just right for four adults, and our adorable 14 month old grand daughter Nancy. We chartered a Bavaria 39 from Sami, which wasn’t the newest on the block, but well presented, clean and tidy with the massive benefit of Solar Panels which made a massive difference - fridge on 24/7, what a luxury. Sailing the southern Ionian

Spiros provided an excellent charter service. Quick to respond to any questions and everything was very well organised. The yacht was equipped to a very high standard. A stunning Venetian fishing village in Kefalonia with a wonderful natural harbor

The village jewel in Kefalonia's glittering crown, diminutive Fiskardo gains a lot of attention for its natural splendor: where pristine, ice-cream colored villas curl around a lively central harbor. Visit during the shoulder seasons (spring or autumn) when it's still wonderfully balmy but less frequented.

Perfectly manicured fishing village Fiskardo is home to a serene natural harbor that lures many a superyacht charter to its shores. But its wonderful anchorage is not the only reason guests flock here. A visual delight from the moment one arrives, it's hard not to be charmed but its beauty. On blossoming bougainvillea-lined streets lie upscale restaurants and humble seaside tavernas, all offering a freshly plucked seafood tapestry that tastes all the more divine when coupled with Fiskardo's gorgeous vistas.

Timmerman Yachts is a Russian builder of quality luxury motor yachts. Based in Moscow, it is owned by a group of Dutch and Russian investors and operates out of Moscow Shipyard.
