• Marinas tend to get quite busy during peak summer months, so you need to consider that when deciding on what night's you wish to spend in a slip. Ideally, find a yacht that is comfortable with ample leisure and entertainment facilities onboard. 
• Mistrals are quite common during the shoulder months of May and October, so check with your charter broker about the best anchorages and itineraries if you intend on traveling during these months.
• You should also be aware that certain zones in Sardinia's waters are restricted to protect the sea grass, which may impact on where you anchor the yacht. This is something you can discuss with your yacht broker, or yacht captain when deciding on your itinerary.

Another option is to begin your yacht charter on Italy's west coast only a short hop across the Tyrrhenian Sea. Alternatively, charters can begin on the spellbindingly rugged island of Croatia in the north, separated only by a narrow strait famed for its sailing.

Once you have decided on your perfect yacht, your yacht broker will then draw up the necessary contract; a legally binding agreement between you and the owner of the yacht. At this point, based on the type of contract, you will be required to pay 50% of the cost of the yacht up front, with an additional 25-30% of this base rate to cover additional expenses you and your guests are expected to incur whilst on charter.

Sardinia luxury yacht charter

Sardinia’s scalloped bays, shimmering sands and dramatic coastline have long been the playground of screen starlets, royalty, first families and the yachting elite. With some of the most exclusive harbours, hotels and restaurants in the western Mediterranean, a luxury yacht charter around the Italian island of Sardinia seamlessly combines sun-soaked glamour with timeless elegance and natural beauty. A Tyrrhenian Sea yacht charter around this island can happily balance partying in hotspots like Porto Cervo on the Costa Smeralda with an escape to secluded islands and jaw-dropping marine parks in places such as the Maddalena archipelago.

Sardinia yacht season and weather

Sardinia is hot and dry from May to October with the island enjoying an average of 300 days of sunshine a year. Peak charter months are July and August, though June is also an excellent time to charter. August is particularly busy as most Italians take their holidays during this month.

Most rain falls between October and February, giving much of Sardinia a lush and verdant character. Visitors may well experience balmy summer days in March and April, though evenings will be cool during this time of year. The prevailing wind is north westerly, which can be particularly significant on the Strait of Bonifacio at the north of the island.

Sardinia superyacht charter itineraries

Historic Cagliari crowns Sardinia’s southern edge, and a litter of pretty coves and tiny villages then await. With vineyards inland and towns steeped in history, it is a region rich in cultural and gastronomic offerings. Yachts up to 55 metres LOA can drop anchor at Marina di Cagliari. 

To the north, the superyacht haven of Porto Cervo is the central hub for the yachting elite that descend on Sardinia’s glittering Costa Smeralda each summer. Home to some of Europe’s most expensive residences and exclusive resorts, including the iconic Cala di Volpe hotel, Porto Cervo pulsates during the summer season and its bars and restaurants promise a great night ashore. 

The Yacht Club Costa Smeralda is based in Porto Cervo and organises a packed yacht racing season throughout the summer. Highlights of the Mediterranean cruising calendar in Sardinia include the Giorgio Armani Superyacht Regatta, the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta, the Maxi Rolex Cup and Rolex Swan Cup – all lively events for sailing enthusiasts in Porto Cervo to get involved with. Yachts up to 120 metres can berth at the IGY marina in Port Cervo.

South of Porto Cervo, the resort village of Porto Rotondo’s turquoise waters, pristine beaches and charming piazzas will prove irresistible, and the port here has 25 berths for megayachts. Cruise 20 nautical miles and dock at Marina di Olbia (for yachts up to 80 metres) to discover the city’s café-lined squares. Further south explore the caves near Cala Luna, where the peaks of Gennargentu National Park provide a dramatic backdrop and the snorkelling is excellent. Nearby Cala Goloritzé is another natural wonder.

From the northern coast of the main island cruise about 10 nautical miles offshore toward the spectacular archipelago of La Maddalena. While away long, languid sunny days around Caprera, Spargi, Santo Stefano, Santa Maria, Budelli and Razzoli, and discover some of Sardinia’s best beaches and the island’s breathtaking lagoons. On Isola Maddalena, Cala Gavetta marina can host yachts up to 60 metres LOA, as can the marina of the Hotel Excelsior. On Capera, Porto Palma can accommodate yachts up to 40 metres.

Some luxury yacht charters will combine the magic of Sardinia with French-held Corsica – the islands lie in a north to south run, with Corsica sitting off Sardinia’s northerly tip.

On Corsica , visit the historic capital of Porto-Vecchio, discover the UNESCO wonders of the Lavezzi islands and marvel at the houses perched atop the windswept bluffs in Bonifacio before cruising south to the majestic La Maddelena archipelago.

Sardinia has strong traditions in darts, football, and car racing. Sassari has the Mores Raceway and Cagliari has hosted Formula 3000 racing. Olbia has hosted the Rally d'Italia Sardegna in the FIA World Championship - held on narrow, twisty mountainous roads around the glamorous town of Porto Cervo.

Of course sailing is big here! Cagliari hosts regular international regattas, such the RC44 championship, the Farr 40 World championship, and the Audi MedCup. Several America's Cup contenders have been attracted here, and part of the Louis Vuitton Trophy was held in the Maddalena archipelago in 2010. Porto Pollo is popular with windsurfers and kitesurfers by virtue of a western wind that accelerates between Sardinia and Corsica. In 2005, Aglientu, hosted the Kitesurf World Cup.  Sa Istrumpa, also known as Sardinian Wrestling, is a traditional Sardinian sport, officially recognized by the Italian National Olympic Committee.

Emerald coast, king’s coast, cost verde, paradise coast and the south coast: spoiled with choices on the “sandal island”.

Sardinia , a 24,000 square meter Mediterranean island with about 1.6 million inhabitants, is today an autonomous region of Italy. However, the island was first settled by Greeks, who, already in the Neolithic era, named it “Sandalyon” for its shape. The largest and oldest cities include the regional capital Caligari in the south, as well as Sassari, Quartu Sant’Elena, Olbia, Alghero , Nuoro, Oristano, Carbonia, Selargius, and Iglesias. Some of the cities are also the capitals of some island provinces. Due to its almost 1,900 kilometer-long coast, Sardinia has of course been a popular destination for sailors, skippers, surfers, and other water sport enthusiasts for a long time. The coastal regions are divided into the Costa Smeralda in the northwest, Costa Rei in the east, Costa Verde in the southwest, Costa Paradiso in the north, and Costa de Sud in the south. The most popular beach among tourists is the Emerald Beach (Costa Smeralda) between Palau and Olbia, with many visitors, but Costa Paradiso, tucked between Isola Rossa and Portobello die Gallura, lures many with its small, hidden bays. Costa Verde on the Golfo di Gonnesa is a calmer region, but the “King’s Coast”, between Punta di Santa Giusta and Capo Ferrato, is a livelier area, and Costa de Sud is framed by Capo Teulada and the town Pula. Further coastal and beach towns with nice bathing opportunities and mooring available for sport boats are Arabatx by Tortoli, San Teodoro, Budino, Capo Comino near Sinsicola, Berchidda, Cala Libretto, and bays which are sometimes just accessible by water, such as Porto Quao, Cala Biriola, Costa di Cala Sisine, Costa di Cala Luna, Costa Goloritze, Costa di Cala Marilu, and Cala Gonone on the Golfo di Orosei. Activities on your Sailing Vacation in Sardinia

DIVING The nature preserve on Capo Caccia in the north is quite popular, and on the Sinis peninsula in the west, Capo Teulada and Isla Rossa, La-Maddalena-Archipel national park, around the small Asinara and Mal di Ventre islands, and on Punta Coda Cavallo peninsula with its two islands Tavolara and Molara, diving is allowed but with restrictions, due to nature conservancy efforts.

FISHING All over the island, nature conservation is taken very seriously. At some places fishing is strictly prohibited, and other locations allow the pastime only with restrictions. In the area around the island Maluentu, as well as north of San Giovanni di Sinisi, the sport is strictly forbidden. If you do go fishing, there are some rules: sea urchins may only be gathered between November and May, and only by hand. Perch may only be caught once a day, and the sale of those as well as other types of fish is generally prohibited for hobby fishers. That means you can just fish for yourself, not to make profit off of your catch. Spear fishing is another fun activity in Sardinia, but also one with restrictions. Some types of seafood, which are both easy to catch and plentiful in the coastal waters, are shrimp, crabs, squid, sea bream, moray eels, and weeverfish, among others. Manicapo, Capo Mannu and Sa Marigosa all have a good reputation for being rich fishing grounds. For fishing in the inner part of the island, the lakes Lago del Coghinas, Lago di Gusana, and Lago Omodeo as well as the Coghinas, Flumendosa, Tirso and Temo rivers have carp, catfish, trout, eels, and bass ready to bite at the fishing lines.

CANOEING and KAYAKING These waterways are also the best areas for canoeing and kayaking. Almost 40 marinas are distributed throughout Sardinia, most of which are in the northeast on the Golfo Aranci near Olbia and Palau as well as around Caligari in the south. Further marinas and moorings are in or around Alghero, Fertilia, Porto Conte, Stintino, Porto Torres, Castesardo, Santa Teresa di Gallura, La Maddalena, Cannigione , Poltu Quatu, Porto Cervo, Portisco , Porto Rotondo, Punta Marana, Baia Caddinas, Puntaldia, Porto Ottiolu, La Caletta, Porto Corallo, Capitana, Su Siccu, Perd’e Sali, Cala Verde, Sant’Antioco, Carloforte, Portoscuso, Buggerro, Oristano, and Bosa.

Climbing, horseback riding, hiking, and gliding through the skies: keeping an active and culinary focus while on the go

Equally marked with the beautiful rocks typical of the island, Sardinia’s hinterland as well as its many beaches are both charming and demanding climbing areas. Some excellent hiking and climbing locations are at Tacchi di Jerzu in the Ogliastra mountains, and in the areas around Cala Conone, Cala Luna, La Poltrona, Cala Fuili, Grottone Biddiriscottai, Cala Fighera, Villagreca, Baunei, Dorgali, Masua, Domusnovas, on the Isola di San Pietro, Monte Maccione, Supramonte mountain, and on Capo Caccia near Alghero. True happiness will be found on the back of a horse in Sardinia, and you can pick one up at Scivu Beach on Costa Verde and the stables at Mandra Edera near Abbasanta. A lovely excursion opportunity is the annual horse show in Santu Lussurgiu in June. By foot and as a hiker, the Gennargentu Mountains and its highest point at Punta La Marmora (1834 meters) are worth the climb. Other interesting hiking destinations include the elephant rocks southeast of Castelsardo in the Sassari province – which has been used for almost 4,000 years as a worship site; the nature preserve Parco dei Sette Fratelli (Park of the Seven Brothers) which is known for its many red deer, in the Sarrabus-Gerrei region in the southeast; the Barabagia Plateau in the east, with its holly oak and sweet chestnut trees; and the central region Sarcidano features the deep-blue Lago del Flumendosa as well as the UNESCO World Heritage site of the prehistoric Nuraghe Su Nuraxi Towers in the central area Marmilla. Para gliders are happy to take advantage of Europe’s highest natural jumping point at the Golf of Orosei, from which they fall 120 meters. Before or after, it’s best to build up some strength with typical Sardinian specialties, such as the sheep’s milk cheese pecorino, the thin shepherd’s bread pane carasau, porcheddu (grilled suckling pig), culurgionis (filled pasta), seadas (cheese turnovers with honey), and of course the always-fresh fish and seafood available all over the island.
