Who Owns the $400M 82-Room Gigayacht Floating in This Maine Harbor?

We're no strangers here in Maine to seeing the ultra-wealthy dock their massive floating mansions on the docks at one of hundreds are amazingly beautiful ports. Even though we're used to it, it's still remarkable when a yacht of THIS size shows up.

According to many people on Facebook, Instagram and even WGME, a gigayacht has docked in Portland. Now, to be fair, I had no idea what a gigayacht even was until I read a little further into it.

The Portland Press Herald explained in part that "a yacht is typically at least 30 feet long, a superyacht is 80-100 feet long, a megayacht is 200 feet, and a gigayacht is over 300 feet long."

The yacht, currently docked in Portland Harbor, is a whopping 453 feet in length, WGME reported , and is run by a crew of 45 people and features at least half a dozen decks, has a built-in wine cellar, movie theater, fitness gym and is equipped with more than 82 rooms.

But, how how does a yacht of this size COST? I mean, it has to be a few thousand bucks, right?

In fact, this astonishing piece of nautical equipment cost a staggering $400+ million to build, according to WGME.

Who has that kind of money and the desire to build such a floating palace? None other than David Geffen.

But who the heck is David Geffen?

According to Forbes , Geffen is the cofounder of Dreamworks Animation and "the founder of record labels Asylum Records, Geffen Records and DGC Records."

Forbes states that as of August 2023, he's worth over $7 billion. With a B.

David Geffen's 82-Room Megayacht Docks in Portland, Maine

The picturesque harbor at Portland, Maine hosts a number of luxury cruise ships in the fall months, but rarely does a privately owned vessel of a similar stature grace its waters. Thus when the world’s 10th largest yacht, David Geffen’s 453-foot long Rising Sun  docked there recently, it caused quite a sensation. The five-story, 82-room yacht took up enough space for several smaller boats at the city’s Ocean Gateway International Marine Terminal. Originally commissioned by Oracle billionaire Larry Ellison from Germany's Lürssen shipyard in 2004, the yacht cost about $250 million to build. The Rising Sun features luxe accommodations for 12 people, in addition to 30 crew members, and features a gymnasium, spa, sauna, wine cellar, private cinema and basketball court that converts to a helipad.

Geffen and Ellison were originally co-owners of the yacht before Geffen took full control of it in 2010. It it is the largest yacht in the world owned by a U.S. citizen. It is not known whether Geffen was on board the yacht when it arrived in Maine, but here’s where a few other billionaires docked their yachts recently:

  • Russian Billionaire Andrey Melnichenko brought the world’s “coolest” megayacht — a 390-foot, $400 million vessel designed by Philippe Starck and dubbed the A  — to Auckland, New Zealand.
  • Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich brought the 536-foot  Eclipse , the second largest yacht in the world which cost around $800 million, to the southern Croatian island of Mljet.
  • Microsoft billionaire Paul Allen arrived in Iceland aboard the 414-foot Octopus , the 13th largest yacht and the largest expedition yacht in the world.

PORTLAND – One of the largest yachts in the world will be berthing on Portland’s waterfront this month.

City of Portland spokeswoman Nicole Clegg says the city has been contacted by representatives of the Rising Sun and is in the process of making berthing arrangements for the 82-room super-yacht, reported to be the sixth-largest in the world.

Additional Photos

The Rising Sun, a five-story super-yacht, sits at anchor next to a sailboat and smaller yachts at the Yacht Haven Grande harbor in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands in 2007. The yacht is expected to berth at the Maine State Pier later this month.

Clegg said the yacht will have to be berthed at the Portland Ocean Terminal — also known as the Maine State Pier — instead of the Ocean Gateway International Marine Terminal because of previous bookings at that location for cruise ships.

She does not know the Rising Sun’s exact schedule, but the ship’s agent said the yacht is expected to dock in Portland in late September. It is not clear how long the yacht will remain in Portland. Clegg said the city is excited about showcasing its offerings.

“We welcome the Rising Sun to port and are excited that they have selected Portland as a destination. The timing fits nicely with the onset of the busiest months of the cruise ship season,” Clegg said.

The Rising Sun is 453 feet long and reportedly cost more than $200 million to build. It features 82 rooms, an extensive wine cellar, bathrooms with jacuzzis, a private cinema with plasma screen, and a basketball court/helicopter landing pad. Advertisement

According to Forbes.com, the Rising Sun was built for Larry Ellison, the CEO and co-founder of Oracle, one of the nation’s leading enterprise software companies.

Billionaire David Geffen, a record executive and film producer who started DreamWorks Studios with Steven Spielberg and Jeffrey Katzenberg, bought the Rising Sun from Ellison two years ago.

Justin Costello, who will serve as the ship’s agent, said he does not have an exact date yet for the Rising Sun’s arrival in Portland.

Costello owns Fred E. Gignoux, a Portland-based steamship agent and customs broker that was established in 1918.

Costello will provide the Rising Sun with an array of foreign-made items while it is in port — anything from spare mechanical parts to artwork to stemware.

He described the Rising Sun as a “mega-yacht.” He said other celebrities and their yachts have called on Portland in the past, including singers Eric Clapton and Diana Ross. Advertisement

Costello said he heard that the vessel’s owners chose Portland so they could do some leaf peeping. The Maine Tourism Association says the fall foliage season starts Sept. 12.

“There are good reasons for people to want to come and visit Portland, and hopefully, after a day or week, visitors are not only satisfied with what they have found but a little surprised by how much Portland and Maine have to offer,” Clegg said.

The Rising Sun will be charged $2.10 per linear foot for each day it is berthed in Portland, Clegg said. There may be other fees for ramp use, water and electricity.

Clegg said 60 cruise ships with a total capacity of 68,977 passengers and 25,425 crew are expected to berth in Portland during the cruise ship season, which runs from June through October.

Ocean Navigator

A Rising Sun and rain in the forecast

' data-srcset=

You can count on early autumn days and nights in Maine. Here in Portland, Ocean Navigator ’s homeport, the fall foliage along the Casco Bay shore colors the coast with brilliant yellows, reds, and oranges. Crisp, dry autumn air tees up crystal clear nights and starry skies. For many these are the most spectacular and alluring days of the year. This month, those autumn leaves beckoned to David Geffen and company.

As anticipated, Mr. Geffen’s yacht Rising Sun tied up at the Maine State Pier in Portland Friday — in the rain. At 453 feet, the Jon Bannenberg-designed boat is more ship than yacht yet still swan-like and graceful. Friday’s rain turned into Saturday’s rain. Saturday’s rain turned into Saturday night’s rain, autumn rain being the punishment for enjoying Maine’s sparkling autumn days.

On Sunday, the forecast was for light drizzle and an occasional shower. The Peaks Island gang (more about them later) hauled boats all day in a constant rain.

Billions of dollars in personal wealth, friends in high places, a $200+ million yacht with the talismanic name of Rising Sun to boot, and still — just as it happens to all of the rest of us — you cruise into an anxiously awaited port, and then you’re stuck below deck while it rains steadily for three straight days.

Of course, being holed up at the dock for a rainy weekend on the Rising Sun couldn’t be too hard to take.

And Monday dawned with a rainbow overarching Portland. I’m sure it was worth the wait — it always is.

Hollywood billionaire David Geffen has been self-isolating on his superyacht in the Caribbean during the coronavirus pandemic. Take a look at the $590 million yacht.

  • Billionaire David Geffen is in the hot seat for a "tone-deaf" Instagram post about isolating on his yacht, Rising Sun, in the Caribbean, The Guardian reported .
  • Geffen reportedly paid $590 million for the yacht, which previously belonged to Oracle founder Larry Ellison .

Insider Today

Billionaire and entertainment mogul David Geffen is in the hot seat this week for a "tone-deaf" Instagram post about isolating on his $590 million yacht in the Caribbean during the coronavirus pandemic, The Guardian reported .

On Saturday, Geffen posted photos showing his  superyacht, Rising Sun, in the Grenadines with the caption, "Sunset last night. Isolated in the Grenadines avoiding the virus. I hope everybody is staying safe." The backlash on Twitter was prompt, with people calling his post "shameful" and out of touch, reported Business Insider's Katie Warren . He appears to have since  deactivated his Instagram .

It's the same yacht that  Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos was spotted on in the Balearics, Spain, last summer. In a photo posted to Geffen's Instagram , Bezos was seen with his girlfriend, Lauren Sanchez; the supermodel Karlie Kloss; and former Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein.

But Bezos and crew aren't the first to cruise the high seas with Geffen, who appears to love hosting celebrities, musicians, and actors. Leonardo DiCaprio, Bradley Cooper, Oprah Winfrey, and Barack and Michelle Obama have also previously kicked back on Geffen's 400-foot-plus superyacht.

Here's a look at Rising Sun — and the big names who have been on board.

The entertainment mogul David Geffen, founder of DreamWorks, SKG, Asylum Records, Geffen Records, and DGS Records, owns Rising Sun. According to Forbes, he's worth an estimated $7.8 billion.

The 454-foot megayacht was originally built for Oracle founder Larry Ellison. Geffen bought a half-share in 2007 and the other half in 2010, totaling $590 million.

The exact value of the superyacht is unclear. However, a 2019 put its value at $300 million.

Rising Sun was constructed by the German shipbuilder Lurssen. Once Geffen became owner, he had the yacht refitted over a six-month period.

The yacht can accommodate 18 guests and a staff of 55 people. It even has a basketball court.

Geffen has cruised everywhere from St. Bart's and the Tobago Cays in the Caribbean to Portofino, Italy, and Ibiza, Spain, according to posts Business Insider previously viewed on his now-deactivated Instagram — but not without a few friends.

Rising Sun is a great place for entertaining. A scroll through Geffen's Instagram feed before it was deleted showed that he's hosted many a celebrity guest on board.

Oprah Winfrey, Bradley Cooper, Orlando Bloom, Katy Perry, Chris Rock, Bruce Springsteen, Mariah Carey, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Tom Hanks have all joined Geffen in cruising the high seas, according to now-deleted Instagram posts.

But Geffen likely won't have any friends on board anytime soon during the coronavirus pandemic.

While the combined $590 million that Geffen spent to buy Rising Sun is an astronomical figure, it pales in comparison to the world's most expensive yacht. That title goes to the Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich's yacht Eclipse, which is estimated to be worth anywhere from $600 million to $1.5 billion.

I think all people’s design processes, whether subliminal or not, are recalling something — whether it’s something that’s stirred, or triggered something, or sparked an idea, or an unintentional homage to someone.” - Dickie Bannenberg talks of yacht design and his father Jon Bannenberg's groundbreaking work.

Billionaire and entertainment mogul David Geffen reportedly purchased the superyacht for $590 million from the Oracle founder Larry Ellison. It was reported that wealthy people love spending money on yachts, and about 88% of the luxury market can be associated to spending on yachts. For this reason, it is not at all surprising that billionaires are spending so much money buying yachts . Yachts can be considered as the pinnacle of luxury and decadence and about $22 billion annually are spent on Yachts by the wealthy people. The Rising Sun has hosted numerous famous celebrities including American talk show host Oprah Winfrey and Academy Award winner Leonardo DiCaprio on board and even Amazon founder Jeff Bezos was seen hanging out in the superyacht.

Geffen has cruised everywhere using the Superyacht from St. Bart's in the Caribbean to Portofino to Italy and even Ibiza, Spain. He loves travelling using his yacht but not without his friends and some high profile celebrities. Among the guests in his massive yacht are Julia Roberts, Maria Shriver, Steven Spielberg, JJ Abrams, Karlie Kloss, Peter Harrington-Cressman, Paul McCartney and even Michelle and Barack Obama. Take a look inside the majestic yacht of Geffen.

The Rising Sun is a motor yacht which was designed by Jon Bannenberg and was built and constructed in 2004 by German shipbuilder Lürssen. The yacht reportedly costs $200 million to build. The yacht was built at Lürssen’s Bremen shipyard for the founder and CEO of Oracle Corporation, Larry Ellison. It was delivered to Ellison in June 2004. Since 2010, David Geffen has owned the yacht. Geffen bought half of the share of the 454-foot megayacht in 2007 and decided to buy the yacht in full in 2010 which totaled his payment for $590 million. The exact estimated value of the yacht is still unclear but as of 2019, the yacht was valued for $300 million. After Geffen bought it, he had the yacht refitted in the period of just six months.

The motor yacht has a tonnage of 7,841 GT and has a length of 138 m that is about 452 ft 9 in. It utilizes the installed power of the diesel engine of 4 × MTU 20V 8000 M90 with 36,000 kW. It also has 4 propellers as its propulsion and has the speed of 28 knots that can comfortably run at the speed of 26 knots but can run at the maximum speed of 30 knots. It was built with steel hull and an aluminum superstructure that includes a teak deck. It also features an anchor stabilizer which provides the people on board an exceptional comfort. Unlike some other luxury yachts, the Rising Sun is not available for private charter.

https://www.pinterest.ph/pin/532058143448158436/

The superyacht has about eighty two rooms and has the ability to accommodate about 18 guests and 55 staff and crew members. The eighteen guests can comfortably stay in the nine suites at the yacht which can ensure a relaxed luxury yacht experience . The massive yacht even has a basketball court on board. The top deck is entirely dedicated to the owner which includes a double-height cinema. Aside from the basketball court, there is also a wine cellar and a movie theater which can be found among the eighty two rooms of the yacht.

The interior design of the yacht was designed by design house Seccombe Design. The exterior design on the other hand was designed by Bannenberg & Rowell and was refitted in 2011 after David Geffen has requested for it. The builders of the Rising Sun have experimented with the extensive use of some structural glass that gives off a clean and stripped-down profile for the yacht. This includes the builders extensively working on the engineering and systems of the yacht. The exposure of the yacht’s structure is one of the overarching themes in the superyacht’s design.

https://www.pinterest.ph/pin/400961173065183662/

There is a reason why a lot of famous celebrities and public figure enjoy hanging out at the superyacht. For the added comfort and entertainment, there is a sauna, underwater lights, beauty salon, elevator and gym at the superyacht. It offers the luxuries of the land space on a secluded area which gives them the privacy that they need. The general arrangement of the layout of the Rising Sun has given the guests spacious cabins which have a direct access to the exterior side decks of the yacht. With the use of the 45-degree indents in the yacht’s superstructure, the guests are also protected from the weather.

The yacht has so much space that the guests can roam around and just party. The top deck was designed entirely for the owner’s entertainment. The guests can also enjoy the double-height cinema which was embedded just like the stone of the avocado.

Democrats set Chicago convention roll call to a soundtrack: Here’s each song, by state or territory

Each delegation at the democratic national convention announced their votes for presidential nominee kamala harris on tuesday night to a fitting song..

Flanked by family and members of the Illinois delegation, Gov. J.B. Pritzker speaks during the ceremonial roll call vote on the second day of the 2024 Democratic National Convention at the United Center, Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2024. | Ashlee Rezin/Sun-Times

Flanked by family and members of the Illinois delegation, Gov. J.B. Pritzker speaks during the ceremonial roll call vote on Tuesday night at the Democratic National Convention at the United Center. What song accompanied the delegates’ proclamation?

Ashlee Rezin/Sun-Times

rising sun yacht in portland maine

The traditional roll call at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago turned into a boisterous dance party Tuesday, with each delegation announcing their votes for presidential nominee Kamala Harris to a fitting song.

The musical nods spun by DJ Cassidy were mostly obvious. Massachusetts went with a punk song about Boston. Kansas picked a song from the band Kansas.

But there were curious picks — like American Samoa rolling out to Lady Gaga’s “Edge of Glory” — and some delegations said they simply didn’t have a say in the matter.

Here’s how each song (likely) fits each state or territory, in order of the roll call:

Alabama: “Sweet Home Alabama,” Lynyrd Skynyrd

Yes, the Southern state picked its most famous name-check, even if the band itself is originally from Florida.

Alaska: “Feel It Still,” Portugal. The Man

Despite the European nation in its name, the rock band is from Wasilla, Alaska, which also happens to be the hometown of former Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin.

  • Complete DNC coverage by the Sun-Times

American Samoa: “Edge of Glory,” Lady Gaga

The territory’s Democratic Party didn’t respond to an email seeking comment Wednesday but NPR reports this is a “tongue-in-cheek nod to the territory’s position as the southernmost territory in the United States.” So we’ll go with that.

Arizona: “Edge of Seventeen,” Stevie Nicks

The former Fleetwood Mac singer and solo artist is from Phoenix.

Arkansas: “Don’t Stop,” Fleetwood Mac

The Southern state also went with a Nicks’ hit when it picked this song, which was also famously the theme of then-Arkansas Gov. Bill Clinton’s winning 1992 presidential campaign.

Colorado: “September,” Earth, Wind & Fire

One of the original lead singers of the band, Philip Bailey, was born in Denver, where he and other band members from the Mile High City are also in the Colorado Music Hall of Fame .

Connecticut: “Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I’m Yours),” Stevie Wonder

The New England state’s pick was one of former President Barack Obama’s go-to songs during his two successful presidential runs, but there’s no apparent connection to Connecticut. (Wonder is from Michigan.)

Delaware: “Higher Love,” Kygo and Whitney Houston

The home state of President Joe Biden went with a song that had been a mainstay of his 2020 campaign.

Democrats Abroad: “Love Train,” The O’Jays

The organization acknowledged Wednesday it didn’t have a say in the pick, but said the early disco hit was appropriate, given it has members in more than 190 countries.

Washington, D.C.: “Let Me Clear My Throat,” DJ Kool

The delegation from the nation’s capital went with the party anthem by a native son.

Florida: “I Won’t Back Down,” Tom Petty

The late rock star was born in — you guessed it — the Sunshine State.

Georgia: “Turn Down For What,” DJ Snake and Lil Jon

Atlanta’s own Lil Jon delivered a raucous version of his hit live and in person to the crowd at Chicago’s United Center.

Guam: “Espresso,” Sabrina Carpenter

The island territory went with one of the biggest hits of the summer, though Carpenter was born and raised in Pennsylvania, some 7,800 miles (12,500 kilometers) away.

Hawaii: “24K Magic,” Bruno Mars

If you haven’t already picked up on a theme here, the R&B star hails from Honolulu.

Idaho: “Private Idaho,” The B-52s

The song is by the Georgia band most famous for “Love Shack” and other hits, but singer Fred Schneider told the Idaho Statesman he chose this song title because the state is “pretty mysterious to, you know, all of us.”

Illinois: “Sirius,” The Alan Parsons Project

The British prog rock band’s song was the intro music for the Michael Jordan-era Chicago Bulls, who played in the very arena hosting the convention.

Indiana: “Don’t Stop ’til You Get Enough,” Michael Jackson

Jackson and his famous family were originally from the industrial city of Gary, Indiana.

Iowa: “Celebration,” Kool and The Gang

The band may have been from New Jersey but everyone likes to celebrate good times, c’mon.

Kansas: “Carry On Wayward Son,” Kansas

There was really only one way this pick was going to go — a song from the arena rock band from Topeka, Kansas.

Kentucky: “First Class,” Jack Harlow

The rapper was born and raised in the Bluegrass State.

Louisiana: “All I Do Is Win,” DJ Khaled feat. T-Pain, Ludacris, Snoop Dogg and Rick Ross

New Orleans native? Check. Infectious party anthem? You bet.

Maine: “Shut Up and Dance,” Walk the Moon

Once again, a New England state ended up with a song everyone can sing along to, even if it didn’t have an obvious local connection. (Walk the Moon is from Ohio.) Maine Democrats say their pick of a song from local band The Ghost of Paul Revere was ultimately nixed.

Maryland: “Respect,” Aretha Franklin

The mid-Atlantic state also decided against a homegrown pick when it rolled with a hit from Detroit’s late “Queen of Soul.”

Massachusetts: “I’m Shipping Up to Boston,” The Dropkick Murphys

The de facto anthem of the Red Sox, by an Irish American punk band from the suburbs of the Massachusetts capital? No notes.

Michigan: “Lose Yourself,” Eminem

The hit comes from the Detroit native’s 2002 semi-autobiographical movie “8 Mile,” about a struggling rapper trying to make his name in the city’s hip-hop scene.

Mississippi: “Twistin’ the Night Away,” Sam Cooke

The late soul singer was born in Clarksdale, Mississippi.

Missouri: “Good Luck, Babe!,” Chappell Roan

The Show-Me State went with an upbeat track by the rising pop star, who hails from Willard, Missouri (and who recently headlined Chicago’s Lollapalooza ).

Montana: “American Woman,” Lenny Kravitz

The song, originally by the Canadian band The Guess Who, has no obvious connection to the Big Sky State — but the title has everything to do with sending a woman to the White House.

Nebraska: “Firework,” Katy Perry

Perry has no apparent connection to the Cornhusker State, but she’s lent her starpower to the Democratic Party in recent years, performing at Biden’s inauguration . Her hit song “Roar” also featured prominently in Hillary Clinton’s failed 2016 presidential campaign.

Nevada: “Mr. Brightside,” The Killers

Brandon Flowers and Dave Keuning formed the rock band more than two decade ago, in Las Vegas.

New Hampshire: “Don’t Stop Believin’,” Journey

The rock band formed in San Francisco, but we’d be hard-pressed to find an event, rally or game that hasn’t used this song as its anthem.

New Jersey: “Born in the U.S.A.,” Bruce Springsteen

It couldn’t get more obvious than this. “The Boss” is from Long Branch, New Jersey, and politicians from both parties have played his song at rallies and events too many times to count — despite its more subversive lyrics.

New Mexico: “Confident,” Demi Lovato

Lovato was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

New York: “Empire State of Mind,” Jay-Z feat. Alicia Keys

Both Jay-Z and Keys are from New York, the city for which this song is an anthem and ode.

North Carolina: “Raise Up,” Petey Pablo

Pablo, a rapper and record producer, is from the Tar Heel State.

North Dakota: “Girl on Fire,” Alicia Keys

As established above, Keys is from New York, but her song has often been used to celebrate and empower women (including at the Olympics ).

Northern Mariana Islands: “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell

The U.S. commonwealth north of Guam has no apparent connection to Gaye or Terrell, but it is mountainous with several volcanos — and the song choice could be a nod to the journey Harris is on.

Ohio: “Green Light,” John Legend feat. André 3000

Legend was born in Springfield, Ohio. (André 3000 of Outkast is from Atlanta, however. And Legend is in town for the DNC ).

Oklahoma: “Ain’t Goin’ Down (‘til the Sun Comes Up),” Garth Brooks

The country singer was born in Tulsa, the Sooner State’s second-largest city.

Oregon: “Float On,” Modest Mouse

The band was formed in Washington state, but is now based in Portland, Oregon.

Pennsylvania: “Motownphilly,” Boyz II Men; “Black and Yellow,” Wiz Khalifa

Boyz II Men is from Philadelphia, where the music video for “Motownphilly” was filmed. Meanwhile, Wiz Khalifa’s “Black and Yellow” is about growing up in Pittsburgh. The titular colors are a tribute to the city’s football team, the Steelers.

Puerto Rico: “Despacito,” Luis Fonsi feat. Daddy Yankee

Both singers behind this 2017 song of the summer are from Puerto Rico.

Rhode Island: “Shake it Off,” Taylor Swift

Swift is from Pennsylvania, but in 2013 purchased what was then the most expensive private home in Rhode Island.

South Carolina: “Get Up (I Feel Like Being A) Sex Machine,” James Brown

The late “Godfather of Soul” was born in Barnwell, South Carolina.

South Dakota: “What I Like About You,” The Romantics

The rock band is from Detroit, not the Mount Rushmore State. Does it matter if there’s a lot to like?

Tennessee: “9 to 5,” Dolly Parton

The country music legend was born in Pittman Center, Tennessee, and currently lives outside of Nashville.

Texas: “TEXAS HOLD ‘EM,” Beyoncé

In case it needs explaining, Beyoncé is from Houston.

Utah: “Animal,” Neon Trees

The rock band formed in Provo, Utah.

Vermont: “Stick Season,” Noah Kahan

Kahan was born in Strafford, Vermont, a picturesque New England town.

US Virgin Islands: “VI to the Bone,” Mic Love

As the song title indicates, the rapper is from the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Virginia: “The Way I Are,” Timbaland feat. Keri Hilson and D.O.E.

Timbaland was born and raised in Norfolk, Virginia.

Washington: “Can’t Hold Us,” Macklemore & Ryan Lewis

Both Macklemore and Lewis are from the Evergreen State.

West Virginia: “Take Me Home, Country Roads,” John Denver

Denver is from New Mexico, but the hit song he wrote with Bill Danoff and Taffy Nivert has long been a symbol of the Mountain State.

Wisconsin: “Jump Around,” House of Pain

The hip-hop trio is from Los Angeles, but their 1992 hit song has been played at University of Wisconsin football games for years.

Wyoming: “I Gotta Feeling,” Black Eyed Peas

The song has no apparent connection to the state but sent a message that’s pretty self-explanatory.

And at the end of the alphabetical roll call, the candidates’ home states:

Minnesota: “Kiss” and “1999,” Prince and The Revolution

The pop superstar was born in — and died in — his home state, which he shares with vice presidential nominee Gov. Tim Walz.

California: “The Next Episode,” Dr. Dre; “California Love,” Tupac Shakur; “Alright” and “Not Like Us,” Kendrick Lamar

Harris’ home state picked a medley of West Coast hip-hop anthems — classic and more recent — to close out the roll call.

Marcelo reported from New York and Naishadham from Washington.
