San Juan 30

San Juan 30 is a 29 ′ 10 ″ / 9.1 m monohull sailboat designed by Bruce Kirby and built by Clark Boat Company starting in 1975.

Drawing of San Juan 30

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Based on an IOR 1/2 ton prototype. A more racing oriented version (with a shorter coach roof and longer cockpit, deeper keel etc.) was also available. How many of these were built in unknown. Available with the deeper keel: 6.0’/1.83m Tall rig: I: 39.5’/12.04m J: 12.5’/3.81m P: 35.0’/10.67m E: 9.5’/2.90m Thanks to SJ 30 owner Chris F. for providing additional information.

Review of San Juan 30

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all.

The boat is equipped with 75.0 liter fresh water capacity.

The boat equipped with a masthead rig. The advantage of a masthead rig is its simplicity and the fact that a given sail area - compared with a fractional rig - can be carried lower and thus with less heeling moment.

The San Juan 30 is equipped with a fin keel. A boat with a fin keel is more manoeuvrable but has less directional stability than a similar boat with a full keel.

The keel is made of lead. Compared with iron, lead has the advantage of being 44% heavier, which allows a smaller keel and hence less water resistance and higher speed.

The boat can enter most marinas as the draft is just about 1.58 - 1.68 meter (5.18 - 5.48 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

San Juan 30 is typically equipped with an inboard Universal Atomic 4 gasoline engine at 30 hp (22 kW). Calculated max speed is about 7.4 knots

The fuel tank has a capacity of 65.0 liters (17 US gallons, 14 imperial gallons).

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for San Juan 30 is 2.07, indicating that this boat would not be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 6.5 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for San Juan 30 is about 146 kg/cm, alternatively 822 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 146 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 822 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is a Ballast Ratio?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

What is SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio)?

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 25m 2 (269 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

Like it--- shmike it! A bad day on a boat beats a good day at work any time. Go sailing.

Ken Cross

We had a San Juan 28. While smaller I do have some observations. The cockpit drain was tied to the galley sink drain with an underwater through hull. If the drain clogged, it would overfill the sink and drain inside. Ours had no easy way to install an electric bilge pump. The bilge would require hoses and wire over the floor. The hull was heavily built with hand laid FG. Sailing hardware was good quality, but wireing and plumbing were awful. Once again different boat, but the berths we're way too small. We restructured inside to make it work. Ken

San Juan 30 is a great boat. Very fast and fun to race. Built by the Clark Boat Company in Auburn WA. I've been through the plant when it was around.

Island in may to do our ispa courses, comp crew and day . Would love to to the coast for a few weeks sailing but probably won't have the boat or us up to speed until the 2017 summer.
Sounds like a hell of a day in those winds!! But you and the boat survived so all is well. Our worst so far wasn't even close to that.
Two weeks ago we were out with a friend, his gf and her son. A freak storm blew in fast. It hit us on a close, haul tipped us to about 45 and we rounded up. Allison(my wife) was on the tiller and had never experienced that before. She handled it well and put us downwind. My and my buddy dropped and got the going. Started driving into the wind to the closest sheltered area. Then watched a hobbie cat capsized. We had 6-7 foot breaking waves. This in a lake 30' deep so waves were very close together.my was alternating between fully out of the water and fully submerged. We got over to the guy and pulled him aboard. It took about 45 min before he was settled enough to even tell us his name. No real injuries but definitely in shock. After it calmed down we went to his boat.( I will never do that again) It took a couple hours to flip it and his sails were still powered up so it came up and sailed right to us and flipped on top of our poor little boat. Luckily it didn't hurt any of us or out boat. By this time his yacht club had come out to get him, so we handed him and his boat over and headed for our marina.
By this point we were all soaked, the gf was blind drunk, her kid was freaked! Me, Allison and my buddy were taking turns at the tiller and all shivering cold. Then we spotted an upside down in the dark!! We did about 6 laps searching for people while calling 911. Didn't find anyone thankfully. The motor was not staying on at low idle so we left it to the pros to deal with and limped home( another 30 min or so)
The next morning we heard reports of another 8 capsized, mostly small crafts, and winds in the sheltered marina were 28 knts. I have no idea what they were out in the middle of the lake. Not once was I concerned that our San Juan was in any way not fully capable to handle it. Although I did find out that the Po put the cock pit drains together with silicone:@ Over the course of the night it amounted to about 20-25 L of water we pumped out so not too bad. That got bumped to the top of the list;-)
When I tell friends that story, they tell me I'm crazy, especially since I consider it such a fun night! I probably shouldn't repeat yours to them.
Long live San Juan's!!

Crime and public safety | ‘a passion for service’: service mourns san jose community service officer killed on duty, long pham was struck by an alleged drunk driver while performing traffic control.

A flag hangs above a Cordon of SJPD uniformed officers lined up in formation on Barack Obama for fallen CSO Officer Long Pham at SAP Center in San Jose, Calif., on Friday, Aug. 30, 2024. (Shae Hammond/Bay Area News Group)

Pham, who was killed in the line of duty earlier this month, was honored as a brave officer always willing to put his community ahead of himself — whether he was putting in extra work beyond his allotted hours, assisting on his fellow community service officer’s calls or cheering up his younger brother with a birthday surprise.

“Long was the kind of son and brother who brought joy and peace to his family,” Paul Joseph, acting chief of the San Jose Police Department, told the hundreds of people who gathered at the SAP Center. “His parents described him as an unshakable, gentle mediator, someone who could defuse any argument with his calm and understanding nature.”

Pham, who had worked as a community service officer since 2022 , was killed Aug. 3 by a driver allegedly under the influence while he and his partner were conducting traffic control around an earlier collision on Monterey Road. The driver crashed into a parked community service vehicle, pushing it over Pham and his partner, Veronica Baer. Baer suffered major injuries and was hospitalized for four days with a dislocated shoulder, broken jaw, broken ribs and brain bleed.

Ahead of the service, a procession of police vehicles escorted Pham’s casket to the venue, with officers lining the streets as the group drove below an American flag hung between two fire trucks.

As the service began, Pham’s casket was carried in by uniformed officers, an American flag draped across the top. The procession was followed by the San Jose Police Emerald Society Band, accompanying the procession with bagpipes and drums, and Pham’s family and loved ones, many wearing white flowers pinned to their clothes.

Sergeant Tam Truong, who knew Pham since 2010 and who spoke on behalf of the Pham family, emphasized that he was a symbol of pride for San Jose’s Vietnamese community, and that Pham died doing what he loved.

“From the moment I met Long, it was clear that he had a passion for service and his desire to protect and serve the community he loves,” Truong said.

Several of Pham’s fellow community service officers shared anecdotes and joyful memories of Pham, who they said was passionate about cars and finding good restaurants. He could be a man of few words at times, but he was always smiling, said community service officer Renee Tolero. He would often stop to check in on his fellow community service officers — even when not on duty.

“He never wanted any CSO, any friend, any family member, to struggle on their own,” community service officer Andelina Thibodeau said through tears.

Prosecutors have filed a murder charge against 44-year-old Juan Huerta-Palacios, the man who hit and killed Pham. He was also charged with two felony DUI counts in the crash. Huerta-Palacios had two prior DUI arrests in 2001 and 2014.

Community service officers, who have been part of the San Jose Police Department since 2014, provide crowd and traffic control, issue parking citations, tow vehicles and investigate some incidents such as vandalism, burglary and non-injury traffic violations. They take an eight-week academy course.

The incident marked the first death of a community service officer in the line of duty since the position’s implementation in San Jose.

The funeral concluded with a 21-gun salute followed by a second procession of police vehicles to accompany Phan’s casket away from the SAP Center to his final resting place.

“We will never forget CSO Long Pham’s name,” San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan said at the service. “It is now and forever written into the history of our city. It’s the name of a man who (put) others’ well-being before his own, a man who served his community and a man who paid the ultimate price for that service.”
