The Holder 12 is very stable, very good sailing boat, and easy to sail but no match for speed for the Laser or the Force 5. The Force 5 is better for larger sailors as it has, if I remember correctly 92 sq. ft. of sail area as compared to 76 (again only by memory) for the laser. The Laser is PLENTY powerful enough when the breeze picks up.

They updated some of the features over the years, but overall, it was a simple, easy handling boat. Similar to a Laser, but easier to sail and had some nicer features. More head clearance than a Laser.

Hobie Holder 12 vs Sunfish
I bought a Holder 12 used as my first boat and sailed it weekly for a number of years. That was 18 years ago and I still have it. I prefer it to a Sunfish because it is much more comfortable and a bit faster. Two adults can sit comfortably, its a super easy boat to sail, and it's easy to maintain.
Deciding between Hobie Holder 12 or sailing dinghy for cartopping
Hobie holder 12 for ~$600-$650. I believe Sail Area is actually only 68 sq ft. Nice that I can add a jib later but interior space is lacking. Tough to cartop but good performer. 11'6 Bolger Cartopper for ~$750. More storage space but worse headroom, poorer performance, capsizing will suck.
