Adrenaline Powerboats Building ZRX-54 and 47′ Center Console

adrenaline powerboats inc

Mike Layton , owner of Lincolnton, GA-based Adrenaline Powerboats, announced that the company is currently tooling two new go-fast vee hulls: the ZRX-54 and a 47-foot center-console model.

Adrenaline has been wowing the industry with two ultra-luxurious speedboats: the outboard-powered 45 Speede and the ZRX-47, equipped with stern-drives. Both are all-carbon boats with CNC-cut tooling; everything is designed in CAD at the factory and boast magnificent detail work and supercar-style design, fit and finish, etc. Both have been shown at the Miami International Boat Show , and have participated in events like the 1,000 Islands Charity Poker Run and the Jacksonville River Rally.

Layton told Powerboat Nation that the new 54 will be “the big brother” of the 47. “They’re very similar and share a lot of tooling,” he said. Meanwhile, the center console model—as yet unnamed—is a design that Adrenaline has been working on for some time. A few days ago, unable to contain his enthusiasm, Layton shared an image of an artist’s rendering of the boat to social media. “It’s a sort of teaser picture,” Layton says. “I couldn’t take it anymore—I just had to show people. The design is not completely fleshed out yet, but it’s very close.”

Layton said the new boats will follow the same construction plan as the ZRX-47 and 45 Speede. “They will follow suit with the other boats that we build,” he said. “Everything we build is epoxy infused.”

The base engines on the 54 will be twin staggered 1350s, while the center console will typically feature Mercury Racing 450Rs, which is how the first customers have ordered it.

Expect to see the center console by Spring 2020; the first 54 out of the mold will likely be later that year.

Adrenaline Powerboats of Lincolnton, GA—builder of carbon-fiber models 45′ Speede, ZRX-47 and ZRX-54—has released renderings of its all-new center-console boat, the 47′ CC.

Company owner Mike Layton told Speedboat that he expects the first boat out of the mold to hit the water for testing in May, with a June delivery to the boat’s first recipient, customer Chuck Stark of South Carolina. Stark is planning to drive the boat during the Lake Cumberland Thunder Run in Kentucky, June 18-20.

The 47′ features a 12-foot beam and can accommodate up to five outboard engines. Two of the first four ever built will feature quintuple Mercury Racing 450Rs. Layton said the boat would compete with other performance models in the same size range, as well as some of the more fishing-oriented brands.

“Although the first several builds are not configured for fishing, but the boat could be outfitted for fishing,” Layton explains. “We built some modularity into the back end of the boat to make fishing amenities easy to install.”

Among the 45’s high points are its very classic hull lines and aggressive styling. “I think that’s really what sets it apart,” Layton says. “The hull is very classic and familiar, but the design features are very edgy. It won’t be super heavy—it’s an all-infused epoxy boat with carbon reinforcement, so while we didn’t target it to be a light boat, we didn’t put any excess weight in it.” With a quintuple-engine setup, Layton said he’d like to see the boat reach speeds in the upper 80s.

He said the boat would feature a queen-size bed, a small galley that can be configured according to the owner’s wishes and a roomy bathroom. “We really worked hard to capture as much space under the console as possible,” Layton said. “I’m very proud of the actual size of the bathroom. A lot of the bathrooms tend to be real cramped; this one is not.”

The team at Adrenaline has high hopes for the 47 CC: “Our primary focus has been ramping up production of this new center console,” Layton says. “The thing that is notable about this project is that it’s taking us from a boutique builder into more of a production mindset. We’re going to try to build 12 the first year. We’ll see how it goes.”

Pavlovsk Palace

That the palace achieved such a harmonious facade belies the fact that it was conceived as a much smaller building, with the design expanded and embellished during construction. The task of designing the palace was originally assigned by Catherine the Great to Charles Cameron, the Scottish-born architect who had won the Empress's lasting favour with the work he did at Tsarskoe Selo. Construction began in 1782, but Cameron's modest design and his penchant for the absolute simplicity of Palladianism and the historical purity of Adamesque were not to the liking of Pavel and his wife Maria Feodorovna, and they charged Cameron's assistant, Vincenzo Brenna, with the task of extending the palace and creating a more imposing and regal building. Brenna quickly became Pavel's favourite architect, and went on to design alterations on the palace at Gatchina, and the Mikhailovsky Castle in St. Petersburg. His great achievement, both there and at Pavlovsk, was to combine the future Tsar's eclectic tastes into an organic and harmonious architectural solution.

Brenna's main addition to the original design was to build sweeping curved wings that make the entire structure almost circular. Designed to be seen from the eastern approach, the wings form a courtyard with a statue of Pavel directly in front of the squat central block. On the ground floor, the wings are a classical colonnade, with niches holding busts between the Doric columns. The floor above, however, is an Italianate latticed arcade. The wings lead to simple square pavilions at either end, and the effect is almost Baroque. The central block, however, is austerely neoclassical. While the lower floor is rusticated, with a row of simple arched windows and two niches containing bronze statues, the upper two storeys are decorated with four pairs of large Corinthian columns stretching up to a Pompeian cornice. The whole is crowned by a large colonnaded drum supporting a copper dome.

Inside, the Palace is considerably more ornate, with state rooms designed by some of St. Petersburg's most famous architects, including Quarenghi, Rossi and Voronikhin, the first Russian-born architect to make a significant contribution to one of the Imperial palaces. The palace's interiors are dominated by themes from antiquity, and military motifs designed to please the bellicose Pavel. They include the Italian Hall, which rises up to the building's central dome, the ornate Grecian Hall, the Egyptian Vestibule, and the contrasting Hall of War, with gilded models of military items, and Hall of Peace, equally richly decorated, but with flowers and musical instruments. Also of interest is Maria Fedorovna's Library, with a beautiful parquet floor of twelve sorts of wood and elegant furniture designed by Voronikhin.

The southern wing of the Palace contains Pavlovsk's Picture Gallery, with several notable paintings from the 17 th and 18 th centuries, including works by Tiepolo, Salvatore Rosa, and Rubens, and the Throne Room, which was actually the Palace's main dining room, and contains a 606-piece Gold Dinner Service from the Imperial Porcelain Factory. The Hall of Knights and Imperial Chapel bear testament to Pavel's peculiar relationship with the church - although officially Orthodox, he always preferred the trappings of Catholicism, as can be seen from the lack of icons and the preponderance of statuary in the chapel. The Hall of Knights, meanwhile, was the reception room for the Maltese Chivalric Order of Knights, who fled Malta after Napoleon's invasion and found sanctuary in Russia. Pavel was particularly proud to become their Grand Master, despite the fact that his appointment could not be recognized by the Pope.

The northern wing of the Palace contains the Imperial family's private chambers, which are by turns elegant and cheerful, belying the bitter atmosphere of fear and resentment that reigned between Pavel, his wife, and their children.
