The Yachts of Alfred Mylne

Remarkably, Scotland’s Mylne Yacht Design was founded by Alfred Mylne I in 1896 and has been in continuous operation for more than 120 years. Alfred Mylne designed over 400 yachts in his career.

Here is a short video of classic yachts sailing on the Clyde in the 1930s, featuring designs by Alfred Mylne and Charles Nicholson, including Thendara , Iyruna , Audifax  , Shamrock V , Tigris, Panope, Veronica , and the original Royal Yacht Britannia .

Sailing on the Clyde

The Mylne Yacht Design archive, which is one of the most complete in the world, comes alive in this film. Here Mylne's work, among other designs, are sailing and racing off the west coast of Scotland, around the Isle of Bute and on the River Clyde. This archive footage is shot in Alfred Mylne I's home waters where he established the Bute Slip Dock - the builder of choice in this era.

Alfred Mylne I designed some of the most beautiful yachts for cruising and racing, looking through their archive, it seems there are many with complete plans:

The 15 metre 'Ostara' built in 1909, by Robert McAlister & Son, was an early yacht designed for Sir William P Burton. Burton later progressed to helm Shamrock IV in the 1920 America’s Cup races for his friend and business partner Sir Thomas Lipton. Ostara was lost during the Russian Revolution along with her aristocratic Russian owners, her final resting place location cannot be confirmed although Mylne Yacht Design do have further information.

'Octavia' was launched in 1911 and was designed to conform to the 19 Metre rule. A grand yacht, again drawn by Alfred Mylne for his client, William P Burton who by then had distinguished himself aboard his own boats; 'Penitent', 'Gauntlet', 'Lucida', 'Moyana' and 'Britomart'. Sir William P Burton was moving into popular classes of the elite as he himself excelled in sailing.

Mylne Yacht Design have the complete plans of this 19 Metre and preserve them in the hope that one day, Mariquita - another 19 Metre class yachts who was rebuilt by Fairlie Restorations in 2003, may be joined by Octavia.

Alfred Mylne drew the ketch Pilgrim (62feet in length and designed in 1913), she was a well celebrated cruising yacht of her time. Designed for Mr E G Prettyman MP in 1914, and built on the Clyde under the supervision of Alfred Mylne, she was both graceful and fast. Pilgrim stayed with her original owner for over 20 years, and survived both world wars.

Pilgrim's whereabouts are now unknown, although her plans remain complete and she is offered here as a beautiful recreation opportunity, an authentic classic with blue water cruising potential.

50 ft 'Northward' designed in 1930, was inspired the Poet Laureate Cecil Day-Lewis, and once launched, was the winner of the Blue Water Trophy in 1937.

Jenetta was the longest ever 12 metre drawn. Built and launched in 1939 for Mylne's long-term client Sir William P Burton. Jenetta regularly hosted Uffa Fox as crew alongside Burton. Jenetta is now in the 'Robbe & Berking' yard, Germany. Jenetta survives but needs a complete rebuild but with a great history, she is a prime restoration project that will be snapped up. Her plans remain in the archive of Mylne Yacht Design.

Finally, the 120 foot Golden Hind is a sistership to Thendara. Rigged as a schooner, she was designed in 1930 by Alfred Mylne and her plans are complete in the Mylne Yacht Design office.

Offset tables and complete general arrangement drawings, sail plans, fitting's diagrams are all in Scotland awaiting discovery. We recommend browsing the Mylne Yacht Design archive; if you'd like to make an appointment please contact David Gray on +44(0)1383 873464 or email him [email protected].

BROKER'S COMMENTS

Designed by Scottish legend Alfred Mylne and built in 1926 by A.M. Dickie and Sons, CHICANE’s beauty and sailing qualities have kept her in a one family ownership since 1958 and moreover inspiring them to commit to her restoration. Of the quality of this there have been very few comparable in the classic yacht arena - indeed the names of those contributing read like a who’s who of experts in this field and their achievement is a boat you could not build for three times the listing price. The late Olin Stephens considered the CHICANE restoration the finest he had ever seen and some of the most respected shipwrights have likewise been left spellbound by it. A masterpiece therefore but at 56 feet on deck CHICANE is a useful size, practical and an awesome sailing boat waiting for the next chapter.

Early history is still being researched but Peter Nicholson once told her current owner he remembers CHICANE at moorings on the Solent from his boyhood years. There are numerous Beken photographs recording CHICANE's history pictorially, one of which in 1934 shows her original gaff rig while another in 1948 has her sporting a Bermudan rig. Throughout she has remained a cutter with elegant bowsprit and three lofty headsails. In the 1950s CHICANE underwent several radical changes. Her bowsprit was removed and boom shortened. Her doghouse was moved aft and lowered in profile. That not only removed a signature Mylne feature but effectively cut the cockpit in half. Moreover as all access below was that way any privacy of the owner's aft cabin was lost. Notwithstanding she was still a beauty to behold - and during her subsequent restoration and rebuild all these changes were put right. In 1958 William Kempe sailed CHICANE to Bermuda, where she has remained ever since. His nephew Reid bought her in 1975, proudly carrying his new bride Lucia aboard over the gunwales in 1976 – to live aboard for their 1st year together - so CHICANE has remained there with only 2 owners now for well over half a century. CHICANE has recently undergone a full restoration information on which is provided below.

Restoration and refit

CHICANE has been lovingly restored - principally by shipwrights Joe Postich and Wendy Bliss, themselves alumni of the first Apprenticeshop in Bath, Maine, brainchild of the legendary Lance Lee. One of the first ‘woodenboat’ institutions the Apprenticeshop led the wooden boat renaissance in the US if not World wide. Methods and materials have been traditional with the use of modern materials when appropriate. The work has involved tens of thousands of silicon bronze fastenings, thousands of feet of cotton and oakum caulking and a traditional laid teak sprung deck. The process has effectively renewed most of the yacht. What remains of the original is essentially her shell; half the stem, keel, the stern post and all of the original Burmese teak planking. The planks were left in place during the re-build with frames being renewed from the inside. All the rest is new. All floors are new and of mixed construction Fabricated silicon bronze Composite; part wood - 200 year old long leaf yellow pine - and part silicon bronze All frames are new Black locust double sawn (double futtocks bolted with silicon bronze bolts) alternate with steamed 2 x 2 inch white oak. The bases of all double sawn frames are dovetailed into the keel to ensure security. The laminated teak bottom sections of all dovetailed frames are glued with Resourcinol The rig The rig and sailing gear have been designed with the combined efforts of Tom Cunliffe, Paul Goss and Don Costanzo using the original rig drawings by Alfred Mylne. Reverting to the original rig requires a taller mast, which has not yet been completed. The bowsprit however has been and is a thing of beauty. Fittings All bronze bowsprit and rig fittings were designed and manufactured by the late Harry Spencer – the last job he did before he died. Systems and electricals All systems are of the highest quality and are worthy of particular mention. Electrical systems are often problematic or not substantial enough – not so in this case. Wendy Bliss who worked alongside Luther Goff designer of the entire electrical system, has written up detailed manuals of the system; the quality of which has impressed visiting boat owners and builders alike. Team input While the skill, dedication and aesthetic sense of shipwrights Joe and Wendy have been key to the quality and authenticity of this restoration, early advice and expertise was forthcoming from Ian Nicolson and David Ryder-Turner of A. Mylne and Company and Gordon Swift and Giffy Full also of Woodenboat School fame. Further input, support and advice came from a host of wooden boat and system experts including Paul Goss, Tom Cunliffe, Theo Rye, Donn Costanzo, Harry Spencer, Bob Snow, Duncan Walker, Mark Ratsey, Mike Toomer, Mark Webby, Jeff Law, George Moffett, Joe Liener, Luther Goff and John Ford. Most of this input was given free of charge because the project was so admired ! In addition to this cast, CHICANE has been visited over the years by a 'Who's Who of Yachting'; Elizabeth Meyer, Olin Stephens and Ross Gannon to mention a few. An article in WoodenBoat (July/Aug 2009) reports the legendary Olin Stevens to have stated the Chicane restoration was one of the finest he had ever seen!

Wooden Ships Comments on this Alfred Mylne Sloop

Designed by Alfred Mylne and co. and built by the Bute Slip Dock Ltd in 1961.

With 4 known previous owners she has apparently spent most of her life in Scotland, mainly cruising the west coast.  Bought by the present owner in 2011 and refitted at that time to include checking keel bolts and new standing rigging.  The boat has been re-wired in July 2021.

A very elegant boat, set up for single handed sailing, she is easy to sail alone or with a crew and offers good performance for cruising and racing.  Interior volume is better than might be expected with 5 berths and over 6’ headroom.

Currently the yacht is in need of a refit and her asking price has been adjusted accordingly.  Although a detailed survey has not been carried out it is understood the deck is in poor condition in places, the paint and varnish needs a complete refit and some internal systems such as wiring need attention.  More detailed information available on request about the scope of refit work required.

Described by Ian Nicholson, well known surveyor and author as “one of the loveliest boats in Britain.”

History - Alfred Mylne I

Alfred Mylne was apprenticed to the famous Scottish shipbuilders

In 1888, a 16-year-old Alfred Mylne commenced his illustrious career in the maritime world as an apprentice at the esteemed Scottish shipbuilders, Napier Shanks, and Bell. Despite his foundational experiences, it was his fervor for sailing that led him to the pioneering yacht designer, George Lennox Watson, in 1892. Serving as a draftsman, Mylne contributed to the creation of iconic vessels like the Royal Yacht Britannia , Valkyrie II, and Valkyrie III , manifesting his early influence on legendary ships and defining competitions like the America's Cup.

However, Mylne’s ambition transcended the boundaries of an apprentice. By 1896, Mylne had established his own design office, laying the foundations for what is possibly the world’s oldest yacht design business still in existence today, a legacy that outlives him, marked by elegance and innovation.

Mylne’s journey was interlaced with both accolades and rivalries. He was pivotal in devising the International Metre Rule in 1906, leading to the conception of numerous winning yachts, marked by the unprecedented success of the 19-metre cutter, “Octavia”. His designs, renowned for their elegance, attracted commissions for cruisers, racing dinghies, and commercial crafts of diverse magnitudes, solidifying his reputation as a versatile designer.

In 1911, his journey took a pivotal turn as he acquired a yacht-building yard with his brother Charles, overseeing its operations until his retirement in 1946, passing the torch to his nephew, Alfred Mylne II. Mylne’s resilience and adaptability were evident as he navigated the design office and yard through the tumults of the World Wars, creating crafts for the Royal Navy and components for the Royal Naval Air Service's flying boats.

In 1888, at the age of just 16, Alfred Mylne was apprenticed to the famous Scottish shipbuilders, Napier Shanks and Bell. However his passion for sailing drew him inexorably towards the lion of yacht design, George Lennox Watson in 1892. Working as a draftsman, he was involved in drawing up the plans of the Royal Yacht Britannia and Valkyerie , the 1892 America's Cup challenger for Lord Dunraven. by 1895 he was once again drawing up Lord Dunraven's final America's Cup Challenger Valkyerie III , indeed he crossed the Atlantic with Watson for the event. This precitiated a fued between Watson and Mylne that was to continue for decades to come.

Mylne set up his own office in 1896, which almost certainly makes the firm that still bears his name the world's oldest yacht design business in continuous production. Mylne immediately established a reputation as a designer of winning yachts, and was one of the people behind the most successful yacht handicap rules of all time - the International Metre Rule. This rule was devised in 1906 and in the following years Mylne designed a wonderful collection of winners in various metre sizes up to the remarkable and successful 19 metre cutter "Octavia".

Mylne designs were always admired for their elegance, and this was one of the attractions that drew owners to commission cruisers of every size from his design board. He also produced One-Design classes and racing dinghies, launches and some commercial craft. In 1911 he bought a yacht building yard with his brother Charles and ran it himself until he handed it over to his nephew, Alfred Mylne II in 1946 when he retired. Mylne ran the design office and yacht yard through both World Wars, producing craft for the Royal Navy as well as major components of flying boats for the Royal Naval Air Service.

History of Alfred Mylne

Alfred Mylne, the illustrious boat manufacturer, started his journey in the world of yacht design in the late 19th century. Tracing back its roots to 1896 in Scotland, Alfred Mylne established Mylne's Naval Architecture firm that would steadily grow into an authority in the yacht manufacturing sector. A significant achievement of this period was the development of the Dragon One design - a phenomenal keelboat design that garnered universal acclaim and was adopted for Olympic sailing. The company experienced several transitions throughout the 20th century. Post the founder's demise, the firm was taken over by his great-nephew, Ian Nicholson, a renowned naval architect himself who continued the legacy. The early 1990s brought a turning point when the Mylne archives were procended and later transported to Bute, Scotland, by David Gray, another adept naval architect. David, intent on preserving the rich heritage, reinstated the original Mylne name.Today, the prestigious Alfred Mylne company finds its base in the vibrant locality of Bute, Scotland. Building upon its founder's innovative traditions, the contemporary Mylne company offers classic yacht designs and modern boat engineering services alike, perpetuating the towering reputation of Alfred Mylne in the global recreational marine industry. From historical yacht reconstructions to cutting-edge engineering consultancy, Mylne continues to be a homage to its founder's illustrious legacy and a beacon of naval craftsmanship.
