SAMPLE ITINERARY FOR THE BVI:

The Bight at Norman Island makes the perfect anchorage to head for on your first night. After crossing Sir Francis Drake Channel you will sail past The Indians and Pelican Island. Dead ahead is a  protected anchorage to grab your first overnight mooring.

The Bight makes such a great first night stop as it is well protected, has loads of moorings, and offers good snorkeling. You’ll also find a lovely restaurant in the left corner called Pirates Bight and the historic Willy T, which is on anchor. Once you are secure on your overnight mooring, jump in the dinghy and make your way over to The Caves. You’ll find a splendid National Park site with natural caves to explore and teeming with sea life, therefore a great first snorkel.

As the sun is dropping in the sky, you’ll want to return to the boat, scrub up and dinghy ashore for dinner. Pirates Bight is a lively, family-oriented beach bar and restaurant. On the other hand, you could opt for the Willy T. This famous floating bar and restaurant made a name for itself many years ago. They offered a free T-Shirt to anyone who jumped off the top deck naked! Health and Safety stepped in to prevent this ritual but it still has a reputation for being fun and noisy. It’s not for everybody but if you are looking to party and have a good time, this a must do.

At first light, motor straight over to the Indians, as it is close enough to leave the sails at rest. Once you’ve picked up a National Park mooring buoy you can leisurely take in the spectacular rock formations before snorkeling. Take in the lavish corals, an array of sealife and colorful sponges which contrast with the rocky ledges and steep walls that rise to the surface.

Next, sail to Great Harbor, Peter Island. Here you will pick up a mooring for the night and either dine at Ocean’s 7 or fire up the BBQ. Peter Island has 5 gorgeous white sand beaches and offers great snorkeling and swimming with turtles popping up throughout. Just off of Key Point you will find one of the newest dive sites, established in 2019, the sunken original Willy T. This an underwater pirate-themed shipwreck playground for divers, complete with skeletal pirates going about their daily business. Don’t miss this one!

Following breakfast, sail to the wreck of The Rhone, sunk in 1867, just off of Salt Island for a stunning morning dive/snorkel. Next, tack up to Cooper Island in the early afternoon and grab your overnight mooring in Manchioneel Bay. Then swim over to Cistern Point for more snorkeling, relaxing on the beach or chillin’ by the bar at the Cooper Island Beach Club. For the evening, you can either dine ashore at the restaurant (be certain to call for reservations) or barbeque on your boat.

*Due to the plentiful turtle grass on the sea bottom, there is a strict ‘no anchoring’ policy in effect at Cooper Island. So be sure to get there early for a mooring or reserve one first thing in the morning.

Get an early start and tack up the Sir Francis Drake Channel to The Baths on the southern end of Virgin Gorda. Once there, pick up a National Parks mooring, dinghy part of way in and tie off at the dinghy line provided. From there you and your crew will need to swim to the beach. Do pay attention to the flag system on the beach  there is a north swell.

You can spend the whole day exploring the tunnels, caves and crystal-clear pools through the maze of massive boulders. By the way, they have been resting here for literally millions of years! Enjoy a little lunch on board before heading back across the channel towards Marina Cay. Although Pusser’s no longer have a presence at Marina Cay, there is still amazing snorkeling and swimming to be had. Another option is to stay at Scrub Island in the resort’s marina and enjoy their fantastic 2 story pool and restaurants.

Today you’ll be heading to North Sound, Virgin Gorda where you will find a little something for everyone. Why not break up your sail with a stop at The Dogs? An excellent snorkeling and diving site as with all National Parks, it is a cluster of three small islets.

After lunch, onward up into the North Sound, being sure to use the well-marked north entrance and not the shortcut next to Mosquito Island. Your destination, Leverick Bay, has everything that a sailor or landlubber could want. The amenities include: a full service spa that can even accommodate you aboard, a complete marina, pool, restaurant, beach bar, live entertainment most nights, water sports, shopping, and a market for provisions plus a deli. In fact, there’s too much to list, definitely worth a stop over!

If weather permits, sail to Anegada early in the morning (leave by 9 AM!), which is an easy 2-3 hour trip from the North Sound due North. Be sure you called the office first to get the OK!

There is only one anchorage and make sure you go in between the red and green entry markers. By the time you’ve picked up one of the 30 mooring buoys, you and your crew will be ready to explore. Choose either a taxi or rented car for the day to visit Loblolly Bay, Cow Wreck and Anegada Beach Club. In addition to the beautiful white beaches, you will fall in love with the Roseate Flamingos, rare rock iguanas, manmade conch islands and splendid plant species like sea lavender. The fantastic outer reef, Horseshoe Reef, is rich in marine life and perfect for snorkeling or diving and dotted with shipwrecks. Anegada is the most scenic watersports playground in the region, especially for kiteboarders and paddle boarders alike.  And for Dinner….? Lobster of course!

As the sun rises get set to sail west, downwind, towards Jost Van Dyke. It’s important to realize that this will be your longest sail, therefore it would be a good idea to stop for a morning snorkel at Monkey Point, Guana Island.

Given that Monkey Point is another national park, you’ll find an abundance of marine life. As a matter of fact, yellowtail snappers, bluestriped grunts and yellow jacks, along with turtles and tarpon call this home. Next, continue to Great Harbor on Jost Van Dyke, home to Foxy’s where they are well known for live music and barbeques on the weekends. With this in mind, it makes for a great stop for the whole family. In fact, you can pick up your overnight mooring, then jump in the dinghy and head around the point into White Bay. Enjoy a ‘Painkiller’ at the Soggy Dollar Bar or a Delirious Donkey at Hendo’s Hideout before heading back around to Great Harbor for dinner.

Last but not least, you’ll have a long upwind sail ahead, so leave early (ish). You will be sailing around the West End of Tortola and up the channel to BVI Yacht Charters at Ritter Marina, Road Town by noon. Remember to give us a call before you arrive in order to check your docking details. Subsequently, we’ll have a taxi waiting once we have refueled you at our fuel dock and checked the boat back in with our team.

ADVANCE YOUR KNOWLEDGE…

For those interested in additional studying, NauticEd offers an online chart briefing you can do in advance of your trip. The cost is $13 and it can be done by as many of your crew as you wish. The online chart briefing is NOT a substitute for the full chart briefing on arrival.

BVI Sample Itinerary

The best bvi luxury yacht charter destination in the caribbean.

The British Virgin Islands are hailed as the best sailing yacht destination in the Caribbean, and arguably the whole world. The consistent trade winds, year-round warm weather, and line of sight sailing make the islands ideal for your next BVI charter vacation. With dozens of unspoiled islands and cays, beautiful white sand beaches, bountiful marine life, and unique, relaxed island culture, make this the year you set sail in the British Virgin Islands.

Guests enjoy delicious island cuisine right next to their BVI luxury yacht charter.

Sample Itinerary for BVI Charter Guests

With their BVI boat charter anchored nearby, a mother and son snorkel in crystal-clear waters.

Sail to Norman Island for your first night aboard. Hook a mooring ball, lower the dinghy in the water, and begin the exploration of this hidden treasure of an island. Dinghy around the point to the Caves where there are three caves at water level at the base of a cliff. The afternoon light makes this an ideal snorkel stop. Next, make your way over to Pirates Bight, a family-oriented beach bar, for a late lunch and enjoy a frozen drink to cool you off. Afterward, head back to your charter boat and take advantage of all the water toys you have onboard your luxury yacht. Enjoy an evening of adventure and step aboard the infamous Willy T where you can enjoy a night of dancing, local island drinks, and tons of fun.

For the early birds, plan an early morning hike to see the pristine vistas as the sun rises, then head back to the boat for a leisurely breakfast. Afterword, make way for some stellar snorkeling at The Indians. The amazing rock formations rise and descend roughly the same fifty feet above and below the water surface, which form abundant coral gardens, a 15-foot tunnel, lots of fish and an underwater cavern. Follow up that dive with another incredible dive off the wreck of the Rhone located just off Salt Island. After your underwater experience, tack back up the Sir Francis Drake Channel and head to Cooper Island. Remember to grab your overnight mooring ball as the balls are somewhat limited. Swim over to Cistern Point for more spectacular snorkeling or simply relax on the beach by the bar at the Cooper Island Beach Club while your luxurious yacht charter awaits your next adventure. Don’t forget to reserve your overnight mooring with BoatyBall.

A most spectacular Caribbean sunset view from Cooper Island Beach Club in the BVI.

Get an early start and make your way over to the Baths. Grab a National Parks Mooring and dinghy into the beach. Note that you can no longer take your dinghy onto the beach as it is roped off. You will have to swim to the beach area from the dinghy line. Make sure to pack a dry bag to keep your camera and other items free from water as well as your National Parks Permit along with the admission fee. Plan to spend your full 90 minutes making your way through the tunnels, caves, and crystal-clear water pools through the maze of massive boulders. Make your way over to Devil’s Bay beach for a refreshing swim. Following that, hike up to the top of the Baths to savor a scenic lunch with the most amazing 360° views of the BVI. Hike back down to the beach and head back to your luxuriously appointed yacht. Pull up anchor and navigate your way over to Leverick Bay for the night. Secure a mooring ball or make reservations for a space on the dock. This marina has it all – fresh water, ice, fuel, showers, laundry facilities, spa, shopping, provisioning, garbage disposal, water sports, Wi-Fi, and food aplenty.

Days 4 & 5

Experience an exhilarating sail to the low-lying coral island of Anegada. Keep an eye out for friendly dolphins and whales along your journey. Once you arrive at port, be sure to make a dinner reservation and place your order no later than 4pm for a lobster dinner! Then, head off to one of the secluded beaches like Loblolly Bay or our favorite, Cow Wreck Beach. Spend an extra day here in Anegada and enjoy the beaches; rent a scooter, search for pink flamingos, grab your snorkel gear, or even try bonefishing, one of the most sought-after shallow water game fish in the world. Other options include taking a private water tour to explore Conch Islands while learning all about Anegada, visit the shark sanctuary, the reptile sanctuary, or go horseback riding on the beach!

Watch friendly schools of dolphins swim alongside while sailing your BVI sailing charter between BVI islands.

Enjoy a nice downwind sail toward Jost Van Dyke. This will most likely be your longest sail, so break it up with a late morning stop at The Dogs for amazing snorkeling amongst the blue tang, parrotfish, and butterflyfish. Or further on you can take a break at Monkey Point on Guana Island. The snorkeling is stunning here, with so many other types of fish to view: yellowtail snappers, grunts, jacks, turtles, and large tarpon. However, pelicans diving for their next meal remains the best show that Mother Nature has to offer. Enjoy a quick lunch and continue to Great Harbor on Jost Van Dyke, home to Foxy’s Tamarind Bar, unforgettable Corsairs, and famed Tipsy Shark, you’ll find their phone numbers and links in your boat folder aboard your vessel. You will also find the only floating spa, Ocean Spa, in the entire BVI at Great Harbor. Reserving an overnight mooring ball with BoatyBall is a must at this location as they are quite limited.

Enjoy a tasty breakfast aboard your boat, then, navigate your way by dingy over to the famous Soggy Dollar beach bar, in White Bay for a world-famous Painkiller. Enjoy the day at the beach and then head to Peter Island. Great Harbor at Peter Island is perfect for your last night as it is quiet, picturesque, and speaks volumes about a Caribbean charter experience. On the water’s edge of Great Harbor, you’ll find Oceans Seven bar and restaurant, offering guests delicious local delicacies for lunch and dinner.

A Waypoints’ yacht charter guest enjoys fresh-brewed coffee on the trampoline, overlooking Peter Island in the distance.

After breakfast, you will have time to squeeze in one more snorkel adventure, surrounding yourself with fascinating high-spirited marine life in the crystal-clear waters of Great Harbor. Taking a snorkel or one last stroll on the beach is the perfect way to end your trip before you set sail to return to the best marina in Nanny Cay, aboard your private yacht charter.

Cruising Itinerary for the British Virgin Islands

Why choose the british virgin islands cruising grounds.

The British Virgin Islands are one of the most famous cruising grounds for a Caribbean luxury yacht charter and it draws Scuba divers from across the world who come to experience one magnificent dive site after another, such as the wreck of RMS RHONE.

Spend quality time with loved ones as you adventure through this region known for pirates, shipwrecks and beautiful underwater habitats home to marine life unique to the region. Most islands are blissfully uninhabited, the only luxuries and entertainment being the fantastic selection of water toys you bring with you and your on board amenities.

Whether you are chartering for a family holiday, honeymoon or other special occasion, you will be in good hands with a highly trained crew on board and luxurious salons and cabins to rest in after an active day in the sunshine and sea.

Day 1: Tortola

Begin your tour with a bang on Tortola , the largest of the British Virgin Islands at 28 km² and the location with the most restaurants, bars, spas, boutiques and hotels (should you wish to have an extended stay), all set amongst pristine rain forest.

Watch time disappear along the incredible coasts, from Smuggler's Cove in the west to Josiah's Bay beach in the east, while in-land Sage Mountain is a satisfying hike through banana tree forest.

As Tortola is so large, the group should concentrate on spending your first day in civilisation and make time for the other parts of the island on separate days: Road Town has a variety of boutiques, art galleries, museums and eateries surrounding Her Majesty's Prison Museum and The J. R. O'Neal Botanical Gardens to take you through a sedate afternoon into a lively evening.

Location highlights: Josiah's Bay beach, Her Majesty's Prison Museum, J. R. O'Neal Botanical Gardens

Day 2: Jost Van Dyke

This festive season hotspot is renowned for Foxy's Bar and the Soggy Dollar Bar, both of which have fireworks on New Year's Day. You'll never want for refreshments with the beach clubs available as you lie back in your hammock and admire the view over a coconut and rum cocktail, and you'll be in good company with the other luxury yacht Owners and charterers anchored along the shores.

Despite the popularity of Jost Van Dyke there is still plenty of opportunity to find a quiet part of the coast for time among family and friends, making use of the water toys and dining on the beach on delicious fare prepared by your expert on board chef. Sandy Cay, Green Cay and Sandy Spit all have charming powdery white beaches fringed by incredible snorkel and dive sites concealed just beneath the crystal clear waves.

Location highlights: Foxy's Bar, Soggy Dollar Bar, Sandy Cay, Green Cay, Sandy Spit

bvi yacht charter itinerary

Day 3: Long Bay (Tortola)

Return to Tortola and discover the sandy bays and beach clubs along the western side of the island. The south has an excellent selection of Scuba dive sites, such as Alphie Rock just 8m/26ft under the surface between Belmont Bay and Long Bay, and Smuggler's Cove is even shallower at 6m/19.7ft, making it an ideal learning ground for all ages. Reef sharks can be spotted at West End Point, and Great Thatch Island has some beautiful deserted beaches for warming up in the sunshine and gentle breeze.

No trip to the Caribbean would be complete without sampling some locally made rum, and the Callwood Distillery at Cane Garden Bay is one of the oldest to still create its product using the original equipment.

The north side of the island offers one bay after another for quiet overnight anchorages or for water sports with the family away from the crowds. Get out the Scuba gear again and snorkel in the shallows of Shark Bay or speed through the water on the Jet Skis, Seabobs and other towable toys.

Location highlights: Alphie Rock, Belmont Bay, Long Bay, Smuggler's Cove, West End Point, Great Thatch Island, Callwood Distillery, Shark Bay

Day 4: Norman Island

This private island is a haven for local bird life and the twisting coastline will leave you feeling like a true adventurer as you happen upon one extensive bay after another. Reputedly the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson's 'Treasure Island', a hike across the rugged paths will take you to Norman Hill for panoramic views that have barely changed from one century to the next. The famous Willy T's Floating Restaurant is now situated in The Bight Bay and this legendary BVI establishment can attract a wild crowd.

Tales of pirates and treasure will spark little imaginations but there is nothing better than diving beneath the waterline and seeing all the hidey-holes for yourself in the caves to the west of popular mooring spot The Bight. Kayak up close to the intimidating cliffs and look for old coins in the caves along the way. Within the caves, there is a sudden difference in the light and dark, and corals and fish hide in the shadows to be spotted by torch. Pause a moment before swimming out to admire the lights streaming in through the water and the light effects playing across the sandy floor.

Another beautiful reef is to be found to the north near Pelican Island and The Indians. Superyachts come here to experience what is considered one of the best dive sites amongst the BVIs, where the coral can be enjoyed by snorkelers and even kayakers and paddle boarders who want to enjoy the view from above.

Location highlights: The Bight, The Caves, Pelican Rock, The Indians, Willy T's Floating Restaurant

Day 5: Key Cay & Peter Island

Off Peter Island, Key Cay is a tropical idyll boasting honey-hued white sand beaches cresting one bay after the next. The true wonders lie below the waterline however, where schools of vibrant fish will dart and dance in colourful displays right before you, Interrupting this spectacle is the occasional puffer fish, bull ray and stingray, which are common in these parts and will mesmerise snorkelers and Scuba divers alike.

If you want to spend some time in 'town', Deadman's Bay on Peter Island has a few scattered restaurants and resorts, where you can spend the afternoon dining, drinking and enjoying the spa massage services should none be available on your own luxury yacht.

The snorkelling in this area is also impressive and the beach has a reputation as one of the most romantic in the world.

Location highlights: Key Cay, Deadman's Bay

Day 6: Salt Island

West of Salt Island is one of the most visited dive sites in the Caribbean: The wreck of the RMS RHONE. It lies in three parts beneath the surface, the deepest of which lies at 24m/80ft. The RMS Rhone Marine Park named after the wreck is home to marine life of all shapes, colours and sizes, and divers may encounter grey angelfish, pipefish, barracuda and a myriad primary-coloured schools of fish just hovering around the corals.

Salt Island itself is no longer inhabited, however the salt for which the island is named after is still harvested in a ceremony in July. Spend your tie with the other water toys along the beaches, rest on the sands or your sundeck on board and wear off your lunch with a trip to the summit for the marvellous views.

Location highlights: RMS Rhone Marine Park

Day 7: Ginger Island

This uninhabited private island is a place of serenity and a divers' paradise, where puffer fish, reef sharks and stingrays glide past corals hiding impressive sea anemones and sponges. The Alice in Wonderland and Ginger Steps dive sites are the most desirable places to visit and only a short distance from each other - spend the morning at one site, have lunch alfresco on board and after a rest on the sun loungers move on to the second site in the early afternoon. Once you're done, there is still plenty of time to go on land and play on the beaches.

Younger members of the group will appreciates the shallow bays for swimming, snorkelling and playing with the inflatable toys without the worry of large crashing waves.

Location highlights: Alice in Wonderland dive site, Ginger Steps dive site

Day 8: Virgin Gorda

The Baths near Devil's Bay is possibly one of the most recognised areas in the British Virgin Islands due to its large circular boulders set upon honey-coloured sands as the sea water washes in and out of rock pools. Take a walk through the coastal caves to emerge onto a powdery sand beach, or head to Savannah Bay for your pick of the half-mile crescent of sand. On land, visitors can hike to the summit for the stunning views of the islands and its sapphire blue surroundings, however the true wonders of Virgin Gorda are concealed beneath the sea.

Korean wreck CHIKUZEN has become a hot spot with the local marine life and a Scuba dive 25.9m/85ft down to where she came to rest will provide encounters with rays, reef sharks and schools of fish of all shapes and sizes.

The Dog Islands to the north west of Virgin Gorda have myriad dive sites ranging from a shallow 4.5m/15ft - perfect as well for snorkelers - to 25.9m/85ft deep. Coral canyons, cathedral-like grottoes and rare species await beneath the water and there is enough to satisfy experienced divers as well as offering beginners an enchanting playground.

Stop by at Mosquito Island for its numerous wreck dives, then dry off within the National Park on Prickly Pear Island, revelling in the tranquil beaches perfect for family games and sunset meals.

Location highlights: The Baths, Savannah Bay beach, Chikuzen dive site, The Visibles dive site, Mt. Point dive site, Big Grotto Dive site, Little Grotto dive site, The Gardens dive site, Prickly Pear Island National Park

Day 9: Necker Island

If you're planning a wedding, honeymoon or other special event, Necker Island is available to rent by the day and can accommodate up to 28 guests.

The NECKER NYMPH submarine will take up to 3 people down to depths of 30m/98ft and the island's 32m/104.9ft catamaran NECKER BELLE is also available for charter so that you can take even more friends and family to see the treasures you have found along your journey.

Take the day at your own pace and rest on the pristine beaches, wallow in the warm, tranquil waters or get out your favourite wind-powered water toys to take advantage of the steady breezes along the coast.

Location highlights: Necker Nymph submarine, Invisibles dive site

Day 10: Scrub Island

Scrub Island is adventure and indulgence in equal measure and visitors can spend the morning following the island hiking trails before having lunch on board or at the One Shoe Beach Bar & Grill, then scuba dive and snorkel in the caves and reefs throughout the afternoon before spending the evening partying along the beaches. If you don't have spa massage facilities on board, the resort can accommodate.

Mahi mahi, tuna and wahoo are known to swim through these waters and fishing enthusiasts will be in their element all day long.

Location highlights: One Shoe Beach Bar & Grill, Marina Cay dive site, Dip N' Scrub dive site, Tip of Scrub dive site

Day 11: Beef Island (Tortola)

Come full circle on your BVIs luxury yacht charter and spend your final day on Beef Island, off the coast of Tortola. Anchor in Trellis Bay and head ashore for family-friendly beach parties, contemporary artwork at Aragorn's Studio and laid-back eateries along the waterfront. The Last Resort Restaurant on Bellamy Cay is famed for its live music and fine dining, and a worthy end to your last day in the British Virgin Islands.

Let the Adventure Begin!

No matter where you begin your BVI journey, follow the island itinerary below clockwise and you will find your origin at Nanny Cay. Trust us, these are our tried and true recommendations to make your trip absolutely unforgettable.

bvi yacht charter itinerary

After completing boat and chart briefings, check to make sure you have everything on board you need for your cruise.  Stock up on any last minute provisions…don’t forget the ice!

Take a mooring ball on the south side of the Bight where waters are the calmest which will be a perfect spot for your first night on charter.

Pick up a National Park buoy and enjoy the wonders of the coral reef and its colorful inhabitants (don’t forget to look for treasure!). The Bight, Norman Island is rumored to be the site of Robert Louis Stevenson’s famous novel, ‘Treasure Island’.

Plan to dine and drink at the “Pirates Bight” Restaurant ashore, which serves great food in a contemporary beach setting. If it’s peace and quiet you crave instead, tonight would make a great dinner aboard your boat pending you provisioned ahead for the meal.

Norman Island makes for your first souvenir stop in the BVI at the Pirates Gift Shop, make sure you check the hours before you go as the shop is not open late.

Be sure to check the restaurant’s event schedule as they often have live music you won’t want to miss.

https://cdn.virgincharteryachts.com/wp-content/uploads/20200530072032/theindians.jpg

After enjoying morning coffee in the Bight as you watch your first sunrise from the flybridge of your charter yacht, head a short distance to the Indians where you can pick up a National Park Trust mooring buoy.

The spectacular Indian Islands are considered to be some of the best snorkeling in the British Virgin Islands, especially since the hurricanes of 2017. These tall rock formations, named for their resemblance to Indian headdresses, are home to an amazing marine life well worth the time to stop and snorkel. Get your underwater cameras ready…the Indians are brimming with beautiful coral and vibrant sea life.  You might even get lucky and see a meandering sea turtle or two.

Note: The seas here can sometimes be choppy which could be a challenge for some snorkelers. If that is the case, you might want to consider stopping at the Indians on Day 1 on the way to the Bight or the morning of Day 8 before heading back to Nanny Cay if the weather seems calm.

DAY TWO (PART II)

https://cdn.virgincharteryachts.com/wp-content/uploads/20200530072030/peter-island-1.jpg

Moor along the southern shore of Great Harbour for the night.  Great Harbour is a deep, but well-protected bay with an easy, wide open approach.

Navigation Tip: If no moorings are available at Great Harbour, the eastern shore or the southeastern side of the harbor have the best anchoring.

Note: Peter Island is also home to the world-renowned Peter Island Beach Club and Spa. Unfortunately, the resort suffered major damage during hurricane Irma and no further announcements have been made as to a when they will reopen.

Great Harbour is the new home to the new and improved William Thornton Floating Bar and Restaurant… a must stop for most charter guests.  Just keep in mind that this is a new location for the ‘Willy T’ and there are a limited number of mooring balls in the harbor.  It is advisable to arrive by early afternoon if you plan on catching a mooring there for the night.  If you are looking for the biggest party spot in the BVI, the Willy T is it!

Note: It might be wise to avoid the Willy T on Sunday evenings.  The locals tend to inundate the ship and the party can get out of hand.

Dinghy to Little Harbour on Peter Island for a quiet afternoon of snorkeling and exploring.  Little Harbour is one of the most picturesque anchorages in the British Virgin Islands.

Note: It is also a protected night anchorage for those seeking a more private, quiet evening than that offered in Great Harbour.

Dock your dinghy and go ashore exploring.  There is an old abandoned customs house which is set in the brush just behind the beach area.  You should find a trail that leads from the beach up to the house if it’s not too overgrown.

Head back to Great Harbour for just a bit more snorkeling along the reef which attracts an abundance of marine life.  There is also good snorkeling around the dock in front of the Oceans Seven Beach Club.

For those looking for a more relaxed dining experience, Oceans Seven Beach Club, located on the west end of Great Harbour, is rumored to be reopening by late 2018.  Not only does it offer wonderful seaside dining, but it is also a great location for family style watersports.

https://cdn.virgincharteryachts.com/wp-content/uploads/20200530072029/rms-rhone.jpg

There are limited moorings available at Cooper Island so we’d recommend arriving early and using your RIB or dingy to explore. Once anchored, guests are free to roam for the day.  Here are some suggestions…

From Cooper Island your divers and snorkelers can dingy over to the Wreck of the Rhone and Salt Island, depending on the weather.

Note: We highly recommend upgrading to a RIB as this body of water can be choppy but it’s best to note the seas along the way. For more official dive accommodations, there is a Dive Shop on Cooper Island that can assist you.

Navigational Tip: We don’t recommend mooring your yacht at the Rhone on most days. It’s very choppy and those staying aboard the yacht could have a rough time while you wait for divers. For snorkelers trying to get a glimpse of the wreck from the surface, we’d highly recommend snorkeling in the afternoon on sunny days.  The sunlight helps snorkelers to see more of the Rhone from the surface.  There is a dingy line at the Rhone located at the shallower part of the wreck.

Salt Island just to the west is a deserted island but fun to explore.  Things to look for…check out the salt ponds and the memorial wall commemorating the sailors of the Rhone in the cemetery. It’s also a great place for a hike around the island for those itching to walk.

Note: We highly recommend having sneakers to go ashore here.  The terrain is a bit rough and there is quite a bit of sea glass.

After a full morning of exploring, relax on the sandy, white beach of the Cooper Island Beach Club where you’ll also find a newly expanded Rum Bar, Microbrewery, Boutique, and Gourmet Coffee Shop.

Be sure to make dinner reservations at the Beach Club’s exquisite restaurant for sunset….the most romantic time to enjoy their Caribbean cuisine.

Note: Reservations are recommended year round but are essential in peak season.

DAY FOUR (PART I)

https://cdn.virgincharteryachts.com/wp-content/uploads/20200530072028/baths-virgin-gorda-1.jpg

No anchoring is allowed at the baths so we’d recommend picking up a day-only mooring ball at the north side of the Devil’s Bay.

Note: The closer you can moor to the shore, the calmer the water will be.

Take your dinghy into shore to explore the magnificent boulders of The Baths.  There is a dingy line to secure your dingy offshore and a swim line for any of your guests that need help getting to shore.

Natural pools and cave-like formations with gleaming natural light that seem to go on for miles, welcome you and your guests ashore.  Make sure to take a camera as there are excellent photo opportunities for your group.

Have an early lunch at the Burger Shack on the beach before it gets too hot…and too crowded!

You’ll certainly want to buy souvenirs T-shirts here at the Baths, but make sure you have a wet bag as the only way back to the dingy is to swim.

Note: The T-shirt shop at the top of the Bath is the best in the BVI but it’s a long hike up the trail…you might want to come back later by car for that one.

While your guests are finishing up lunch and shopping, one or two of you can weave back through the trails to Devil’s Bay to grab the dinghy. Pick everyone else up at the end of the swim line at the Baths. It will save them having to make their way back through the entire trail.

DAY FOUR (PART II)

https://cdn.virgincharteryachts.com/wp-content/uploads/20200530092043/leverick-bay-1.jpg

Leverick Bay Resort is a full-service marina with an option to anchor, moor or dock. We recommend docking so you can take full advantage of this provisioning opportunity. Services include ice, water, fuel, showers, electricity, trash disposal, and laundry.

Relax around Leverick Bay Marina’s 50′ freshwater pool while indulging in the fine foods and beverages available at the Jumbies Beach Bar. It’s a perfect way to meet friends!

Once ashore you can take advantage of all of the amenities that Leverick Bay has to offer,  but certainly, plan on a relaxing dinner at their upstairs restaurant overlooking the North Sound while you think about your next day’s activities.

Leverick Bay hosts a wonderful watersports recreation center where you can rent sunfish, small sailboats or kayaks, experience flyboarding, or catch a ride on a jet ski.  They even have towable rentals in case you forgot to provision them for your charter. Spend the day on the water!

Contact the BVI Snuba and set up an excursion for the whole family.  This amazing underwater adventure is a cross between scuba diving and snorkeling but requires no previous certification or experience.  Just a comfort in water with basic swimming skills is all that you need for a day of fun!

For the fishing enthusiasts aboard, Leverick Bay marina provides services that can arrange a fishing tour for the day. The North Sound lies just 15 miles south of the east Anegada drop, considered to be a prime fishing spot in the Caribbean.

And don’t worry. If you land that big tuna you have always wanted to catch, they even have facilities for cleaning your fish. Not only that but they will even cook it for you!

Pamper your guests with a day at the spa! Enjoy a variety of treatments ranging from massage and facials to nails and hair services. A great way to enjoy the luxurious side of the BVI!

Their professional therapists are even available for onboard services.   Contact the spa for reservations and availability.

Take the dinghy towards Oil Nut Bay on the northeast tip of Virgin Gorda and snorkel “The Guns” in the Eustatia Sound on the east side of Deep Bay. There you’ll find old cannons covered in coral reef just a few feet below the surface of the water.

Note: Statia is a private island so landing ashore is not encouraged.

Finish the afternoon with a casual lunch at Oil Nut Bay world-class beach club restaurant before heading back to Leverick Bay

From Leverick Bay venture west by dinghy and snorkel Anguilla Point just south of Mosquito Island or Mountain Point further to the west.

Contact Gumption prior to your arrive and reserve a spot on his’ Sea It Clear’ Tour of Necker Island.  Reservations are required well in advance.  It’s fun for the whole family that you won’t want to miss!  See more details in our Staff Pick of Tours. (Link to Tours)

Spend the day exploring the island of Virgin Gorda.

Gorda Peak reaches 1368 ft above sea level.  There you’ll find spectacular 360-degree views all of the BVI.

If you haven’t tired of snorkeling Virgin Gorda has many shallow water spots to explore coral and marine life on the back side of the island….Mahoe or Savanah Bay are two excellent choices.

Perched 900 feet above the North Sound, the view is breathtaking and the food is delicious.

If your charter plans bring you to Leverick Bay on a Friday evening, you and your guests are in for a special treat.  Leverick Bay hosts Friday night Jumbies parties complete with an all you can eat Beach BBQ and Moko Jumbie Dancers & Entertainment.  What fun!

Enjoy the “Michael Bean Pirate Show” every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evening.  Clean and fun for all ages.  Bring the family and your best pirate costume!

If you choose to leave the Leverick Bay Resort for dinner, check out our Virgin Gorda Island page.  There you’ll find Staff Picks for a great dining experience. (Link to Staff Restaurant Picks)

DAY SIX (PART I)

Moor at the southwest corner of George Dog close to Kitchen Point. There aren’t many moorings there so hopefully, you won’t have to wait for one.

The snorkeling is excellent near Kitchen Point at the southwest corner of George Dog.  If the seas are not too choppy, you can also swim around the point to the east shore of the island where you’ll find beautiful coral formations.

There is also good snorkeling at The Chimney located at the north corner of the bay on the west side of Great Dog.  You’ll also find several National Park moorings at this location.

Navigational Tip: If there are no moorings available at the Dogs, on calm days the best anchorages are the bay to the west of Kitchen Point on George Dog as well as to the south side of Great Dog.

DAY SIX (PART II)

https://cdn.virgincharteryachts.com/wp-content/uploads/20200530092101/marina-cay-1.jpg

Moor at Marina Cay.  There are plenty of mooring balls available for day or overnight accommodations.

After mooring, dinghy into the dock at Marina Cay.

The shallow waters and surrounding lagoon are a perfect setting to enjoy a peaceful afternoon on the beach.

After a morning of snorkeling, lunch at the award-winning Pussers on Marina Cay.  They have a new outdoor dining area with relaxing views of the lagoon.

For guests looking for a spot to enjoy snorkeling or diving in calm waters, this is the perfect spot.  The coral reef of the lagoon attracts colorful marine life that makes for excellent snorkeling.

DAY SIX (PART III)

https://cdn.virgincharteryachts.com/wp-content/uploads/20200530092045/scrub-island.jpg

Treat yourself to a beautiful evening at Scrub Island. Stay on the docks overnight and you will get access to all the amenities – beautiful shower facilities, a HUGE two-tiered infinity edge swimming pool – complete with waterslide and swim-up bar, a hot tub and multiple wonderful restaurants. Be sure to walk the docks at night to see all the Tarpin in the blue lights of the boats.  Note: Scrub Island Marina charges $1.50 – $2.50 per linear foot plus 20% resort fee for overnight docking. Rates are higher during Christmas holiday season.

If you choose to stay overnight on your mooring at Marina Cay, dinghy to Scrub Island for an amazing 5-star dining experience at Caravela Restaurant.  Check out a sample of their menu .

Note: Most resort amenities are reserved for marina guests.  The restaurants and spa are open to everyone.

DAY SEVEN (PART I)

Cruise down the rugged and unspoiled North shore of Tortola and spend the morning exploring Sandy Spit and Green Cay just off the northeast point of Jost Van Dyke.

Note: Care must be taken if attempting to dinghy into shore at Sandy Spit if there is a strong north swell. Although this deserted island beach is an awesome place to relax, it can be quite difficult to attempt this if the weather is not cooperating.

These deserted little islets are a perfect spot to snorkel the underwater coral bridge in their shallow waters and just enjoy the peace and serenity of their natural Caribbean habitat.

DAY SEVEN (PART II)

https://cdn.virgincharteryachts.com/wp-content/uploads/20200530092048/great-harbour-jost-1.jpg

By midday, head over to Great Harbour and pick up a mooring for the night.

Dinghy west around the western tip of Great Harbour into White bay.

Note: There are day moorings at White Bay but we don’t recommend their use by our charter guests as the water is extremely shallow in many areas of the bay.

Dock your dinghy on the beach at the Soggy Dollar Bar and enjoy one of their perfect ‘painkillers’ originated and perfected there back in the 1970’s.

Note: Check the drink board when you arrive.  You might have a cocktail already waiting for you thanks to someone you know who knew you coming.

Catch lunch at Ivan’s, also in White Bay.  It’s not quite as crowded as Soggy Dollar Bar up the beach and the atmosphere is very laid back and relaxing.  It’s a good place to meet people from all over the world who come there to camp.

Bring your snorkel gear and snorkel off the beach at White Bay towards the western tip of the island.  This undersea coral formations here are home to stingrays, tarpon and even turtles making for an amazing snorkel experience.  This may be one of your last chances to snorkel and well worth it!

Note: Give yourself enough time to get back to Great Harbour while it’s still light. That’s a dinghy trip you wouldn’t want to make in the dark.

No charter would be complete without making a stop at the world famous Foxy’s Bar and Restaurant.  If you stay for dinner, Foxy often will make an appearance to entertain his guests…a memorable experience for sure!  For the partiers onboard, Foxy’s is also known for their late night parties and live music.  Their Halloween and New Year’s Eve celebrations draw people in from all over the world.

You won’t want to come back from this charter without a t-shirt or hat from Foxy’s.  That name is recognized all over the world.  For years to come, people will stop you when you are wearing that shirt to ask about your trip!

Corsairs in Great Harbour is another nice option for dinner or perhaps a nightcap.  If not, they are open for breakfast as well so plan on rising early before heading out the next day.

https://cdn.virgincharteryachts.com/wp-content/uploads/20200530092051/tortola.jpg

Pick up a mooring ball in Cane Garden Bay, your last stop before heading back to the dock at Nanny Cay.  There is plenty of moorings available here so you shouldn’t have any trouble catching one for a few hours.

Navigational Tip: There are two well-marked reefs as you enter Cane Garden Bay. Just stay between the buoys and you won’t have any issues.

There is a long dinghy dock onshore to the left as you look at the beach from your mooring.

Still need to find that special gift for family back home?  Spend the morning souvenir shopping at some of the great little boutiques in Cane Garden Bay. It is also home to Green VI Glass Studio where you can watch glass blowing artisans create hand-crafted pieces from the local recycled glass.

Completing Your Adventure!

Depart Cane Garden Bay with enough time to arrive at Virgin Charter Yachts no later than noon.  It's 10 nautical miles from Cane Garden Bay to Nanny Cay which will take you approximately 40 minutes at 15 knots. Make sure to give yourself ample time to refuel and complete the check-in procedure at our dock before rushing to catch your Ferry or Flight if you will be leaving Tortola that day.

Even if this was your first charter in the BVI, I'm sure you can now see why it's such an amazing destination for charter vacations.  After your first week in the BVI, you've only just scratched the surface of the things to do and places to experience here.  As you watch the sunset on your last day in the British Virgin Islands, make a promise to yourself to be back soon and charter again with Virgin Charter Yachts!

June 17, 2024

My BVI Charter 〉 BVI Charter Itineraries 〉 7-Day Yacht Charter Itinerary in the British Virgin Islands

The British Virgin Islands (or BVI) are a collection of islands in the Caribbean, just East of Puerto Rico. They have been dubbed the “playground for the rich and famous” and are undoubtedly the perfect setting for relaxing and luxurious yacht charter holidays.

Comprising over 50 stunning islands, most visitors will be familiar with the main locations: Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada, and Jost Van Dyke.

This itinerary guide will help you plan your trip to get the most out of your experience and ensure you don’t miss anything.

Our proposed route begins from Norman Island and concludes in one of the smallest and most interesting spots, Jost Van Dyke.

Arriving in the British Virgin Islands and embarkation at Norman Island

Most BVI visitors will arrive at Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport (previously known as Beef Island Airport).

You may also fly to St Thomas earlier and explore the area before making your way to Norman Island, where your yacht charter, crew, and captain will be waiting to welcome you on board.

This privately owned and uninhabited island is said to have inspired Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island . It is a heaven for snorkeling enthusiasts, with options whether you are a beginner or not.

The association and history of piracy have led to rich pirate folklore.

> Sailing Normal Island – important information:

  • Multiple anchorage options are available
  • The area around the coves can be crowded with day trippers

> Sailing Norman Island – don’t miss:

  • Dining at Pirate’s Bight Restaurant.
  • Hiking trails for those who wish to venture ashore – try Spyglass Hill for beautiful vistas.
  • Sunset drink at Willy T (William Thornton).

> Sailing Peter Island – important information:

  • Usually, a more quiet anchorage than nearby options
  • The area was hit hard by Hurricane Irma and is still recovering

Day 2 – Peter Island to Spanish Town

Also known as Valley , Spanish Town is your chance to explore the second-largest town on the BVI and catch up on some shopping.

While you’re there, make sure to visit The Baths, a natural rock formation carved out by the ocean and one of the most popular spots for yacht charters.

> Sailing Spanish Town – important information:

  • Virgin Gorda is the third largest island
  • Major tourist destination, so crowds are to be expected

> Sailing Spanish Town – don’t miss:

Moskito Island BVI Yacht Charter Holidays

Types of Charter Yachts

We recommend either chartering a   catamaran   or a motor yacht f or your crewed yacht charter vacation in the British Virgin Islands. Why? The water in the BVI is very shallow, which greatly limits accessibility for deep-drafted yachts.

“We have seen a growing demand for luxury motor yachts among high-end charter guests.”

Catamarans

Day 5 – North Sound to Anegada

From North Sound, it’s time to head even further north. Anegada is the third largest barrier reef in the world and host to the famous BVI full moon parties .

The name Anegada was given by the Spanish and translates to “Downed Land” for its flat terrain.

The highest point is only 28 feet above sea level. Its dreamy, powdery beaches go on for miles, while the coral landscape makes this a perfect spot for underwater explorations.

The island is known for its fresh seafood, especially lobster , which you’ll find on offer on every menu.

> Sailing Anegada – important information:

  • It is best to book restaurants ahead, especially for lobster!

> Sailing Anegada – don’t miss:

  • Try the Cow Wreck Beach Bar take on the famous Painkiller

Day 6 – Anegada to Jost Van Dyke

A beautiful day of sailing is ahead of you on Day 6 as you make your way south towards Jost Van Dyke . The island is famous for the Soggy Dollar , a laid-back beach bar that you will have to swim to reach, hence the name.

Its specially blended dark rum, pineapple, orange juice, and cream of coconut cocktail has become synonymous with Caribbean holidays since its creation in the 1970s.

> Sailing Jost Van Dyke – important information:

  • White Bay can be a crowded spot.

> Sailing Jost Van Dyke  – don’t miss:

  • Swimming at Sandy Spit and Diamond Cay.
  • Grabbing the signature Painkiller at Soggy Dollar

BVI Sailing Itineraries

BVI Sailing Itineraries

There are many different ways to explore the British Virgin Islands on your sailboat and we hope that these BVI sailing itineraries give you a taste of all the amazing places you can visit, and things to do while on your BVI charter.

Before each charter, we provide an individual chart briefing so that you have the opportunity to discuss where you would like to go.  We will then customise our chart briefing to suit your requirements. Mooring buoys are available in many locations with the addition of the boaty balls (see what’s available here ) which allows you to reserve a mooring buoy in advance. Remember to call ahead of time on the Horizon cell phone provided or by VHF Radio to book in at restaurants for dinner.

If you would like to do some advance planning, ask us to send you the latest edition of the Cruising Guide to the Virgin Islands (or purchase online at amazon.com). This invaluable book shows aerial photos of all the anchorages, tells you about the restaurant and shore-side facilities and has many other useful tips and information. It also contains a fold-out chart so that you can log your trip and keep it as a souvenir.

BVI Sailing Itineraries

A short reach across the Sir Francis Drake Channel and you’ll arrive at The Bight, Norman Island, rumoured to be the site of Robert Louis Stevenson’s famous novel, “Treasure Island”.

There’s time for a swim or snorkel at the Indians before watching a spectacular Caribbean sunset while enjoying a sundowner. Visit the Pirates Bight ashore for a fabulous dinner or great cocktails before dinner on your yacht. In the mood for a party? The infamous Willy T offers good food, the drinks are still strong …. and the party atmosphere is very much alive!

BVI Sailing Itineraries

After breakfast, take your dinghy (or the yacht) over to The Caves. Pick up a National Park buoy and enjoy the wonders of the coral reef and its colourful inhabitants (don’t forget to look for treasure!).

Enjoy a leisurely sail to Cooper Island and arrive early enough to pick up an overnight mooring buoy (no anchoring here please). Time for more snorkeling off Cistern Point,or lounging on the beach while sipping rum cocktails made on island at the Cooper Island Rum Distillery.  Cooper Island Beach Club has a lovely boutique, serves wonderful lunches, dinners and cocktails and is another favourite spot to watch the sun disappear behind the islands.

BVI Sailing Itineraries

Sail to The Baths (get there early) on Virgin Gorda and pick up a buoy in the National Park area – plan to spend the morning here and have lunch. Explore the magnificent boulders and rock pools created by Mother Nature millions of years ago. This special area has got to be one of the most beautiful places on Earth.

After lunch, sail to Trellis Bay or Marina Cay to spend the night – and plan to BBQ on board your yacht. Trellis Bay has full moon parties every month – not to be missed!

10 DAYS FOR THE PRICE OF 7 ON ALL YACHTS

Off to North Sound, Virgin Gorda (great snorkeling at the Dogs or Mountain Point en route).  There are mooring buoys at Leverick Bay which also has a marina facility, a good restaurant and fine dining in their upstairs restaurant. In high season, Michael Beans provides great entertainment for all the family, or pick up a buoy off Prickly Pear and dine on board in a peaceful and beautiful setting.

You can also take a taxi from Gun Creek or Leverick Bay to Hog Heaven, which serves the most amazing pulled pork creations (and lots of other tasty dishes) and the view of North Sound will take your breath away!

Saba Rock Resort and Restaurant is back – rebuilt bigger and better than ever! The Bitter End Yacht Club has also recently reopened. Here, you can re-provision your boat, visit the shops, rent a Hobie Cat, learn to windsurf, or enjoy the music it offers most nights. The new restaurant boasts ‘farm and sea to table’ ingredients. They also have a new open kitchen pizza and wine concept in the Village.

The luxurious “Nova”  Restaurant and dipping pool at Oil Nut Bays Marina Village in Deep Bay, offers wonderful lunches and dinners at reasonable prices. Motor through the well-marked channel between Saba rock and the Bitter End to Deep Bay and pick up a mooring or anchor.  Remember to call ahead to make your booking. This is a great place to learn to kiteboard – ask us for the inside scoop on this exciting sport.  A resort fee is applicable for full use at the Oil Nut Bay resort itself, which is only accessible by dinghy or golf cart further up the coast – there is a beautiful pool complex and beach to accompany your lunch or dinner experience.

BVI Sailing Itineraries

The staff at Horizon Yacht Charters know this area better than most and think you should spend a little more time here in the North Sound. Spend the morning exploring by dinghy; there are many beautiful, deserted beaches and Eustatia Reef is a wonderful snorkeling site. Or set sail for Monkey Point on Guana Island in time for lunch and some snorkeling.

Cruise down the rugged and unspoilt North shore of Tortola and overnight in either Little Harbour or Great Harbour, Jost Van Dyke. A good place to sample the local lobster!

sailing boat in sunset

Sail or motor over to Sandy Cay or Sandy Spit – the perfect desert islands! Snorkel, swim and beachcomb, then enjoy lunch at Foxy’s Taboo or BeeLine on Little Jost, before you sail to Cane Garden Bay for your overnight stop. Enjoy a great BBQ chicken and ribs dinner at one of the restaurants on the beach and then dance ’till the early hours!

BVI Sailing Itineraries

Time for one more swim as part of your Sailing Itineraries, then back to Nanny Cay Marina and Horizon Yacht Charters, making sure you have enough time to complete the check-in procedure at our dock. Your flights will be reconfirmed, your taxi already booked and soon you’ll be on your way home, already planning your return!

If you have opted to do a 10-day charter, then there is time to explore the coral island of Anegada. Allow a day and a half at least to explore this fabulous island. Please ensure that you get clearance to sail here from your briefer before you leave our docks. Anegada is the only coral island in the BVI chain, the rest being volcanic.  It is surrounded by the Caribbean’s largest reef, the 4 th largest in the northern hemisphere, so care must be taken to navigate there, but we will give you a full chart briefing on this area if you aim to visit.  We recommend leaving from the North Sound , Virgin Gorda, at 9am , enjoy an exhilarating beam reach 11 miles north (005 deg m) and this will take you to the channel markers off Setting Point anchorage ( with moorings) between 11 am and Noon – with overhead sunlight to highlight any shallows.  If you are lucky, you will see dolphins and flying fish on the way, and humpback whales in season.  Navigate carefully through the channel and pick up a buoy outside of Anegada Reef Hotel. Lunch aboard before heading out to explore for the afternoon but remember to book dinner in advance (before 4 PM!) at one of the many fabulous restaurants … and try the melt-in-your-mouth Anegada lobster!  We love the Lobster Trap, Wonky Dog, Sid’s Pomato Point, Anegada Reef and Anegada Beach Club (ABC) but all the restaurants are good!

There is a free shuttle from the Lobster Trap across to ABC at Keel Point on the North shore, or hire a mini moke, scooter (not recommended by us, due to the sandy roads!) or get a taxi to explore the island and visit spectacular beaches of miles and miles of white sand, surrounded by shallow coral reefs.  Loblolly and Cow Wreck beaches are two of our favourites, both have great restaurants for lunch, and we love ABC at Keel Point too.

The world renowned Tommy Gaunt Kitesurfing School is situated at ABC for complete beginners or seasoned experts. It is a world class kiting spot and Tommy also has SUPs for rent and can offer guided tours by kite or paddle down the north and south shores. Visiting Anegada is like going back in time and we hope you like it as much as we do!

Depending how much time you lost yourself on Anegada…… resume your itinerary sailing on to Jost Van Dyke, with a stop at Monkey Point, Guana Island for some snorkeling on the way, allowing yourselves time as this is a longer sail to arrive in time to be safely anchored or moored for the night.

BVI sailing itineraries – Diving the British Virgin Islands

The perfect addition to your BVI sailing itineraries! Some of the best diving in the world is here in the British Virgin Islands, including the Wreck of the RMS Rhone, rated as one of the top ten wreck dives in the world. Mention that you will be diving before your chart briefing and we will cover the dive sites with you.

Our office is located right next door to Blue Water Divers where you can rent Scuba equipment or organise “rendezvous” dives, where the dive boat will meet your yacht at anchor and pick up those wishing to dive (a perfect solution if only some of the crew want to dive). They supply tank racks so you can safely store tanks on the yacht. There are refill stations around the islands.

BVI – 8 Day / 7 Night Sample Itinerary

bvi yacht charter itinerary

Every itinerary is customized for you, but it always helps to have an idea of what is possible!

Arrive either into St. Thomas and be picked up by your yacht at one of the three local marinas, take a short ferry ride to Nanny Cay marina or fly directly into Tortola . Your crew will greet you with smiles and offer “welcome aboard” cocktails. Once aboard you will do a brief safety informational. Then sails up for a quick sail to Norman Island. This island was made famous by R.L. Stevenson’s ‘Treasure Island’ where you can jump into the water with your snorkels and explore the infamous caves. This area is quite quiet and if children are joining you, they can indulge in a real pirate treasure hunt! After working up an appetite in the water, enjoy a gourmet lunch onboard tailored specifically to you. Following lunch, move around to the Bight, a quick 5-minute sail, and chose a private corner to enjoy the sun and more water activities such as kayaking, paddle boarding, snorkeling or just sunbathing. For dinner enjoy Pirates Bight restaurant over a scenic sunset or for the adventure seekers, The William Thornton, locally known as Willie T is the infamous floating pirate ship/restaurant. Re-board your yacht for a night cap and evening socialization while experiencing the Tarpons around your boat.

After a restful night on the gentle ocean waves, wake up feeling refreshed…Coffee, tea paired with continental or American breakfast timed to your preference. Enjoy the morning breeze and peaceful island view. After breakfast and perhaps a morning swim, you will set sail to nearby Peter Island. Known for Deadman’s Bay , a one mile long white sand beach, shaded by palm trees and swinging hammocks. Swim through the crystal-clear waters. If you prefer to be more active, there are plenty of paved running and walking trails, in addition to hiking trails for your exploration. Return to an al fresco lunch on the boat to be followed by the Deadman’s bay “best in the BVI” rum smoothie. After lunch you can tack up to Cooper Island to grab an overnight mooring at Manchioneel Bay. Swim over to Cistern Point for more snorkeling or simply relax on the beach at by the famous Cooper Island Beach Club . This is a great spot to go snorkeling for sea turtles. Dine ashore at the restaurant or barbeque on your boat.

Awake again well rested to a beautiful island morning, coffee in hand. After breakfast you will sail to Virgin Gorda “the Fat Virgin” while navigating the Sir Francis Drake channel, picking up a mooring ball at the famous baths. The ‘Baths’ a very popular destination in the BVI and for good reason. Here guests can swim ashore to the beach and work their way through a rocky trail which ends with a swim at Devil’s Bay beach. Once you experience it you will understand why it has become one of the most visited areas in the BVI, some call it the 8th wonder of the world, it is a must see. It is recommended you enjoy a drink at the top of the trail to the Baths. They also serve lunch there if you desire to eat on shore. Then return to the boat for some afternoon relaxation. Enjoy a 5-star dinner on board or visit Leverick Bay Marina and Resort which is a great facility with entertainment by the renown Michael Beans who is part showman, part sailor and pure entertainer. He’s made a life out of pirate lore, sailor’s tales and songs of the islands. Take the evening to watch the night sky the way it was meant to be, in complete darkness. Once your eyes adjust, the ocean will offer special sightings of phosphorescent plankton and jellyfish.

Day 4 and 5

After a delicious breakfast, it’s off to North Sound, Virgin Gorda, about a 45-minute sail, where you will find a little something for everyone. Break up your sail with a stop at the Dogs, a cluster of three small islets, all national parks, with excellent snorkeling and diving. If your boat doesn’t offer on board diving, dive companies can rendezvous with you to explore the underwater paradise. For lunch, head on up into the North Sound, you will find a choice of marinas and restaurants to pick from including the well-known Bitter End Yacht Club , Leverick Bay Hotel and Saba Rock for lunch if you desire or enjoy another customized lunch on the boat. Saba Rock is a great setting with a lovely restaurant overlooking the sound. The buffet menu is affordable and delicious with music most evenings. Visit the Bitter End to rent a Hobie Cat, learn to windsurf, kayak or kite surf. Leverick Bay Hotel has a beauty and massage parlor and a great store to pick up any provisions. Biras Creek a wonderful place for a cocktail and long walk, look out for the iguanas! You can dinghy through past Saba Rock for some turtle spotting at the reef. Take a break and spend a couple of days here – it is well worth it! On the afternoon of Day 5, you will sail 2 hours to the beautiful Anegada, enjoying the beautiful ocean. The evening will be topped with the unforgettable dinner at the Wonky Dog. This is certainly an island that we highly recommend having dinner ashore. They offer a full bar and very decent wine list with dancing afterward to burn off calories.

Awake to Anegada’s “drowned land” beauty. Home of the pink flamingos. After a recommended somewhat early breakfast, you will be shuttled to the northwest coast of the island to enjoy the picturesque Cow Wreck Beach . Named for the cow bones that washed ashore, this soft white sand beach is paired with a casual bar and restaurant. This is the day for total relaxation. You can then continue to the northern coast to Loblolly Bay, the big Bamboo for some of the best swimming and snorkeling in the BVI’s. After a relaxing and sun filled lunch, you will set sail to Guana Island and spend the night in White Bay or Lee Bay Great Camanoe. Finish the day off with a late personally prepared dinner paired with the perfect wine or beverage of your choice.

Now you are getting accustomed to prepared breakfasts every morning while soaking in the beauty of the Island’s while sipping your morning coffee. A 45-minute sail takes you to Sandy Spit. Where you can enjoy your last day of sand and sun off Green Cay. It’s a great place to paddle board, kayak or sunbathe on the boat’s trampolines before lunch. After a light lunch, continue to Great Harbor, home of the infamous Foxy’s Bar where you can not only enjoy some drinks but pick up your BVI souvenirs and T-shirts. Foxy is often around sharing his stories and songs about the hurricanes and his life with any travelers over a cold beer. A highly recommended authentic local experience. From here you can choose to anchor overnight or sail on to Jost Van Dyke or White Bay where the popular Soggy Dollar (where Kenney Chesney’s No shoes, no shirt, no problem music video was filmed) and Coco Locos Beach bar for painkiller cocktails and food. If you opt not to have a feet in the sand dinner, with dancing in the sand to follow, a full dinner will be prepared for you onboard, where you can watch the sunset at the horizon in peace and quiet.

If still in Jost Van Dyke, it’ll be and early sail, heading back to the marina with breakfast en route. As you walk or take a taxi to the airport…you will be reflecting on the one of if not the most incredible vacation of your dreams with your calendar open choosing when to return. The Islands will be waiting.

The Ultimate 7 Day BVI Itinerary

The Ultimate BVI itinerary includes a stop at The Baths.

Planning a BVI Catamaran Charter?

Planning a trip to the British Virgin Islands? Hit all the highlights with this ultimate 7 day BVI itinerary for a trip unlike any other!

For this epic trip, we did a BVI Catamaran Charter onboard a PowerCat 443 from MarineMax Vacations . The PowerCat 443 has three bedrooms and three full bathrooms! This was a perfect size for three couples allowing us plenty of privacy and plenty of room to play at the same time.

Because of our boating experience, we were able to do a bareboat charter, meaning we captained our own catamaran. If you do not feel comfortable driving the boat yourself, a captain is available for an extra charge. Heck, you can even hire a private chef if you want to!

Below you will find all the details for our 7 Day BVI Itinerary which included the famous Willy T, Soggy Dollar Bar, Foxy’s, Scrub Island, The Baths, The Bitter End Yacht Club, and a special dinner at Saba Rock!

BVI Day 1: Travel Day

  • Flight to St Thomas
  • Lunch at the Ferry Terminal
  • Native Son Ferry to Tortola
  • Customs in Road Town Tortola, Taxi to Nanny Cay
  • Arrive at MarineMax at Nanny Cay
  • Dinner at Peg Legs at Nanny Cay (MarineMax Marina)
  • Sleep aboard at Nanny Cay

We ordered provisions ahead of time from Bobby’s Supermarket on Tortola. Our groceries were ready and waiting for us when we arrived! There is a small supermarket and two restaurants at the MarineMax marina which was super helpful for last minute items and meals. There are also showers and changing rooms available to charter guests if you need another option besides the boat bathrooms. MarineMax has rooms available for rent if you do not choose to do a sleep aboard your first night. While the sleep aboard option is more expensive, it was nice to only have to unpack once and to have that extra time to get familiar with the boat before leaving the marina.

How do you get around the BVI’s when you do a BVI sailing charter ? Once you have hooked up to a mooring ball in the harbor of your destination, most catamaran charters come with a dinghy! Then take your dinghy to shore or tie up to a nearby dinghy dock.

Pro Tip : Consider booking private round trip transportation to and from the British Virgin Islands. While it may seem extremely expensive, it actually comes out around the same amount of money and saves you a ton of time!

Willy T party boat in the BVIs.

BVI Day 2: Norman Island

  • MarineMax catamaran orientation
  • Leave from Nanny Cay (MarineMax)
  • Moored at Norman Island
  • Played at Willy T
  • Lunch at Willy T
  • Played and swam by the boat for the remainder of the afternoon
  • Dinner at Pirate’s Bight

What is the Willy T ? The Willy T is a pirate ship and bar off of Norman Island. Not only do they have a dingy dock but space for larger boats to tie up as well.

What do you do at the Willy T? Well…you eat, drink, and jump! Although there are signs posted stating “No Jumping Allowed”, it is what everyone does. Young, old, doesn’t matter. You go to the Willy T, you jump! So we did. LOL.

Should I take my kids to the Willy T ? Well…that depends. At one point during our time at the Willy T, I would say No, absolutely not. It was a wild crowd that I wouldn’t feel comfortable taking my kids to. But they only stayed about an hour and after they left, it was a much more chill crowd, with kids! So, if you plan to take your kids to the Willy T, just know ahead of time, you may to have a plan B or come back another time.

Pro Tip : Need a plan B? Norman Island is also the perfect spot for swimming, snorkeling, exploring caves, and hiking!

Crystal clear water and white sandy beach on jost van dyke.

BVI Day 3: Jost Van Dyke

  • Leave from Norman Island
  • Moored at Great Harbor off Jost Van Dyke
  • Lunch onboard the boat
  • Played at Foxy’s and Soggy Dollar Bar
  • Dinner at Foxy’s

Soggy Dollar Bar is one of the most famous beach bars in the world! Soggy Dollar Bar got it’s name because people could only get there from the water, therefore arriving with soggy dollars in their pockets. They’re famous for a drink called a painkiller which consists of rum, pineapple juice, orange juice, cream of coconut, with grated nutmeg on top! Soggy Dollar has to be included on any BVI itineray!

Pro Tip : There is no dinghy dock at Soggy Dollar Bar. You either have to ride the waves onto the beach OR you can take a taxi from Foxy’s across the island to Soggy Dollar Bar. Either way you’re sure to have a great time! Also, if you need lunch options, there is supposedly a fabulous pizza place near Soggy Dollar Bar. Hendo’s Hideout is another great option.

Infinity pool at Scrub Island

BVI Day 4: Scrub Island

  • Leave from Jost Van Dyke
  • Moored at Marina Cay
  • Played at Scrub Island
  • Lunch at Scrub Island
  • Moved on to overnight mooring in the Bitter End Yacht Club Mooring Field
  • Dinner at Bitter End Yacht Club

Pro Tip : Call ahead of time to make sure you are able to get a day pass for Scrub Island – they initially told us day passes were unavailable, however they made some available when we mentioned we were 20 year Marriott Bonvoy members.

(Our original plan for Day 4 on our BVI Itinerary was to go to Anegada Island- unfortunately due to high winds and rough seas we had to go with Plan B above- which turned out to be epic as well!)

Wellness Reminder: This 7 Day BVI itinerary is jam packed full of fun! Gentle reminder to hydrate, reapply that sunscreen, and take some time to slow down. Scrub Island is the perfect spot for a little rest and relaxation.

The Bath's in Virign Gorda in the British Virgin Islands

BVI Day 5: Virgin Gorda

  • Moored at Bitter End Yacht Club
  • Ferry from BEYC to Gun Creek
  • Taxi to The Baths with Tiger Taxi (Set up by the concierge at BEYC)
  • Lunch at The Baths
  • Played at The Baths National Park on Virgin Gorda
  • Dinner at Saba Rock

I have to say Day 5 during our BVI catamaran charter was my favorite day. The Baths National Park are an absolute must for any BVI itinerary. We absolutely loved seeing a bit of Virgin Gorda by land in a fun open air taxi. And if we went back and wanted to stay at a resort, I would stay at The Bitter End Yacht Club in a heartbeat!

Pro Tip : There are options to anchor off of the Bath’s instead of taking a taxi across the island, however there is only the option to tie your dinghy up to a floating line and then swim the rest of the way into The Bath’s. If you are not a strong swimmer, I would not recommend this option as the current can be quite strong.

clear water and a catamaran at cooper island bvi

BVI Day 6: Cooper Island

  • Leave from BEYC/ Virgin Gorda
  • Moored at Nanny Cay/ Marine Max
  • Lunch on board the boat
  • Played at Cooper Island
  • Return to MarineMax at Nanny Cay
  • Dinner at Peg Legs

Our original plan was to stay overnight at Cooper Island. There is a fun rum bar, brewery, and restaurant on Cooper Island. However, when we went ashore around 1pm that day, they informed us they did not have any dinner reservations available and did not take walk ins. We then planned to go back to Norman Island to finish up our week with one more trip to the Willy T. Sadly, we had some mechanical issues on our way to Norman Island which ended with a MarineMax engineer coming out and bringing us back into the marina. All in all, it was fine, we were all safe and happy!

  • Private boat service ( Johnny’s Maritime Services ) from Nanny Cay to BVI Customs in Soper’s Hole to USVI customs in Cruz Bay in St John to St Thomas
  • Flight home

This was the perfect BVI itinerary for an adult/ couples vacation. You could also easily do this same BVI itinerary in reverse. There’s no reason one is better than the other. There are plenty of family friendly options and things to do with kids as well. This was pretty much the coolest vacation we’ve ever been on- I highly recommend adding it to your bucket list !

Be sure to grab my quick and easy adventure captions or vacation captions to share your BVI trip on Insta too!

BVI Quick Tips & Things to Know Before You Go:

  • Food is very expensive on the islands and service is slow- just prepare to be on “island time”.
  • We ate breakfast on the boat each day.
  • Make dinner reservations for each night or you may not get in! (We tried making reservations around lunchtime on Day 6 at Cooper Island and were turned away because they were full!)
  • Make sure to have some cash handy if you don’t end up getting a BoatyBall…someone will come by each day to collect a mooring fee. You will also likely have someone come by to collect trash for a small cash fee each day. ( BoatyBall is a service where you can reserve a mooring ball each morning- but trust us, balls go quick!)
  • Always have a Plan B in case your original plan doesn’t work out!
  • Something will likely go wrong- just go in knowing that!
  • Give yourself extra time on your travel days! (Apparently Saturdays are the busiest day for leaving the BVIs.)

So what do you think?? You ready to take on the BVI itinerary??

Find Your Perfect Yacht

Spend a week in the bvi.

Sample charter itinerary for the BVi's.

BVI Yacht Charter: Seven Days in Paradise

Want to explore the British Virgin Islands on a yacht charter? What a great vacation! This describes how one may travel for a week from Tortola in this great cruising area. You likely will fly into St. Thomas in the USVI, but the fast ferry system will get you quickly to Tortola. Every charter is thought through just for you by the yacht's Captain who will know the islands well and use your ideas as a further guide. It's your vacation; you can go where you want in the BVIs and stay for however long you like. You'll be dependent only on the weather and where your yacht can safely go. Of course eventually you will need to get back to Tortola on time!

One thing to note is that there are very few places in the Virgin Islands where waverunners or jetskis can be used and best to presume that everyone will be engaged in watersports other than these.

Board your fabulous charter yacht in Tortola, the capital of the British Virgin Islands. Have lunch on board at the marina as you check out the scene. Soon you'll be off to Jost Van Dyke! Visit Foxy's Bar and indulge in an island cocktail called the Painkiller. You won't be sorry! After a bit of exploring around Jost Van Dyke, go on to Great Harbour where you will spend the night. The recommended dinner is at Sidney's Peace and Love Restaurant for its family-style servings of incredibly fresh lobster; though we will expect you to be wowed by the dinner preparations aboard and won't want to eat anywhere else. Hang after dinner for the jump-up and limbo contest!

BVI yacht charter

Cruise to Monkey Point and visit its two beautiful beaches. Monkey Point is off Great Guana Island, known for its iguana and flamingo populations. Take a nice swim and then eat lunch here. Depart for Marina Cay where you'll spend the rest of the day and night aboard your yacht charter. Like Monkey Point, Marina Cay is ideal for snorkeling. Marina Cay is a small island, originally settled by Perry Mason author Robb White, and its surrounding reef provides perfect grounds for sea creature viewing.

Set sail early in the morning for the 'Baths' of Virgin Gorda. These natural sea water pools are a rare wonder. Snorkel in them or just marvel at their uniqueness. In the afternoon, go to Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbour and the outlying Spanish Town to eat lunch and explore. Sail over to Virgin Gorda Sound. Visit the lux accommodations and amenities on offer at the Bitter End Resort and Biras Creek. If gorgeous beaches and fruity cocktails on board are not enough, try the spa or athletic facilities.

Stay another day and night here in the lovely Virgin Gorda Sound. You will want to take the yacht's tender to Eustacia Sound to snorkel and get a good view of Richard Branson’s private Necker Island. You could also stay on land and rent a Jeep to really explore this relatively undeveloped island. Virgin Gorda is home to Little Dix Bay, which is a great place to stop, sunbathe, and sip on a refreshing beverage.

Make your way over to Anegada if the weather's good, 'the drowned island,' so-called because it barely rises out of the water. Anegada is a terrific little gem of an island that is surrounded by reefs that have sunk several ships over the years. This makes it an absolute paradise for divers! There is also good snorkeling on Anegada's north shore.

Take the yacht to Peter Island and do not miss the exquisite beach at Half Moon Bay. The sand and surf here will have you captivated for hours. When you are ready for a change of scenery, hike over to the windward beach and take a leisurely stroll. Choose between an overnight at Great Harbour OR Little Harbour. Peter Island is known for its exclusive resort, gorgeous beaches, and its wide variety of water sports. Have fun!

Enjoy your last full day with a memorable trip to The Bight, Norman's Island. Though Norman's Island is uninhabited, the water is a very popular hangout. This so-called "Treasure Island" is great for waterskiing or kayaking enthusiasts. Rock formations, known as "The Indians," in the channel between Norman Island and St. John are landmark spots for snorkelers.

Return to Tortola to disembark. Have the captain take you to Road Town or to West End (the two ferry terminals) depending on your homeward arrangements. Though you'll be leaving the Caribbean behind, you'll be taking the memories with you. Call when you're ready to book your next charter!

This Is Just a Sampler!

NOTE: This is intended as a suggestion, to give you an idea of where you may want to explore on a one week yachting vacation in the British Virgin Islands. There is plenty to see and do, and your Captain will tailor your trip to your preferences both before and during your yacht charter. Alterations will likely be made along the way, because we know you may fall in love with one harbor and just can't bear to leave!

7 DAYS - Itinerary 1

Suggested sailing itinerary: the caribbean.

7 DAYS The Caribbean sailing route

The 7-day sailing route that includes Norman Island, Cooper Island, Trellis Bay, Virgin Gorda, Peter Island and much more.

Your Caribbean journey starts at a place called The Bight (Norman Island). To get to there, you will have to pass the Sir Francis Drake Channel and two islands, The Indians and the Pelican Island. The Bight offers you everything you could need to start the journey: a well protected area with good anchorage spots, a couple of restaurants (most popular being Pirates and Willy-T) and sport activities. From there, we suggest you visit The Caves, a national park nearby rich with sea life that you can explore by snorkeling. Head back to The Bight for an overnight stay.

The next stop is The Indians, a nearby island that you passed by the day before. You will be amazed by the beautiful natural rock formations and rich sea life (time to go snorkeling again!). On your way to the Cooper Island, visit The Wreck of The Rhone close to the Salt Island for more sea life exploration. Your anchorage spot for the night is in Manchioneel Bay close-by. There you can enjoy more water sport activities or just relax by the beach in a restaurant.

Going once again through the Sir Francis Drake Channel, you will approach Virgin Gorda, an island which you will explore in several locations. You will moor in The Baths, from where you can explore the “eighth wonder of the world” as some people like to call it: it is the sea area around the island, with many tunnels, caves and rock formations. After The Baths, continue sailing towards Trellis Bay, where your anchorage spot for the night will be. Once there, you can enjoy in gastronomic offer and the local nightlife. If you want to spend some quiet time, we suggest anchoring in the Marina Cay.

Moving to your next stop on Virgin Gorda, North Sound. On your way there, we suggest you stop by the Dogs islets, a national park with rich sea life and abundant nature. At North Sound you will find numerous gastronomic and nautical offers as there are many restaurants and marinas. Some of the iconic places are Bitter End Yacht Club, Leverick Bay, Saba Rock and Birds Creek. Besides that, you can spend some time enjoying the surroundings: you could go turtle spotting or just lay back and relax.

The next destination, Jost Van Dyke, is the farthest one to sail to, so we suggest you first stop at the national park Monkey Point (Guana Island) to enjoy the crystal sea, hot sun and local wildlife. Continue your journey towards Jost Van Dyke, where you will anchor for the night. It is a great family-friendly place where you can enjoy a nice dinner while watching the sunset. The most iconic places are Foxy and Soggy Dollar Bar.

On your last day of sailing, it is time to get some gifts and souvenirs! That you can do at Soper’s Hole. After that, continue to Deadman’s Bay (Peter Island) to enjoy the last glimpse of Caribbean wonders. Feel free to climb to the top in order to view the islands from above, but make sure you don’t stay there for the night as it can be unsafe. Great Harbor is a better anchorage spot and it will give you a quieter ambiance in a local atmosphere.

On the last day you can explore the rich sea life, as there are a lot of reefs and tropical fish. After that, disembark across the channel at Joma Marina in Road Town.

7 DAYS - Itinerary 2

Suggested sailing itinerary: bvi.

7-day Itinerary

People all over the world dream of sailing the British Virgin Islands, one of the world's most exclusive and famous yacht charter destinations. Navigare Yachting brings the islands to you, with our amazing BVI charter yacht vacations. Gorgeous warm weather, cobalt blue tropical waters, brilliant white sand beaches, secluded coves and romantic cays – experience them all on a BVI sailing holiday.

Check out this sample BVI sailing holiday itinerary and see what you could be experiencing:

From our base in Nanny Cay, you'll sail east and enjoy a stop at The Baths, a world famous sailing landmark. Natural granite boulders descend dramatically into the sea, creating an epic destination to explore. There's a restaurant and bar at the top of The Baths and a scenic trail that winds down to Devil's Bay. A brief sail northward ends at Spanish Town, which hosts lovely shopping and waterfront dining options.

The journey to Virgin Gorda is a lazy and fun sail towards the Gorda Sound, down the length of the gorgeous island. You'll pass through Savannah Bay and enter a beautiful, sheltered sound surrounded by wonderful places to play, including scenic reefs and tiny islands. This is an ideal area for swimming, snorkeling, paddle boarding, and exploring. When night falls, go ashore to sample the island's dining and entertainment delights, or anchor for a romantic evening beneath the stars.

The island of Anegada is only 15 short miles away, along a glorious route of blue water sailing that lets you thrill amid the endless sun & sea. Anegada is a flat coral atoll, the only feature of its kind in the BVI. The location is almost totally pristine, with an amazing variety of island and undersea wildlife. Nature lovers can't miss Anegada and its amazing flamingos and ground iguanas.

Curving around to the east end of Tortola, rustic Trellis Bay is an appealing small village destination. Scrub Island and Guana Island offer sightseeing and recreation along the beaches. This is a day for exploring, playing in the water, and relaxing beneath the warm sun.

Jost Van Dyke is the smallest of the four main British Virgin Islands but it's the most densely packed with sights and adventures. At Great Harbour and White Bay, you'll enjoy some of the most fun bars, restaurants, and nightlife in the islands, sipping tropical cocktails and swimming by day, listening to live music in a festive atmosphere by night. Nature lovers will enjoy the scenic hike into the rain forested hills above Great Harbour.

The Narrows is the beautiful area of sea that separates Tortola from St. John. You'll thread the needle between Great Thatch and Little Thatch Islands, then curve southeast toward Norman Island – this quaint destination is said to be the inspiration for Treasure Island. There are dozens of secluded coves and sunny bays to explore, and the warm waters are teeming with marine wildlife. This is a diving and snorkeling can't-miss destination.

It's your last day of sailing the unforgettable British Virgin Islands and there's still an adventure or two to be had. A stop at Peter Island is one last opportunity to explore sun-splashed bays, coves, and reefs. It's a short route and you can take your time returning to base, or arrive and explore Tortola to your heart's content.

7 DAYS - Itinerary 3

People all over the world dream of sailing the British Virgin Islands, one of the world's most exclusive and famous yacht charter destinations. Navigare Yachting brings the islands to you, with our amazing BVI bareboat charter vacations. Gorgeous warm weather, cobalt blue tropical waters, brilliant white sand beaches, secluded coves and romantic cays – experience them all on a BVI sailing holiday.

Departing from the Navigare Yachting base in Nanny Cay, Pelican Island is just a short sail away, across the Sir Francis Drake Channel. Both Pelican Island and Peter Island next door are famous for excellent snorkeling, diving, and water recreation. Marine life is abundant and the numerous small coves and cays provide wonderful opportunities for relaxation.

These neighboring islands offer another day of fun in the sun & sea. Salt Island is a noted sea turtle location and favorite among experienced sailors for its scenic bays. Cooper Island is a relaxing and fun excursion, home to the famous Cooper Island Beach Club and one of the most romantic spots at the end of the day to watch the sun disappear behind the islands.

Anegada is a flat coral atoll and one of the most unique natural locations in the BVI. It's a can't-miss destination for snorkeling and diving, with an impressive variety of undersea sights and marine life. A short jaunt southwest are “The Dogs,” a collection of several islands that are named for the barking seals that frequent them. End the day at Scrub Island, where you can go ashore to enjoy the Scrub Island Resort and Spa, or simply dine at anchor beneath the stars.

A brilliant day of sailing begins with stops at Monkey Point and White Bay, named one of the best snorkeling spots in all the BVI. An invigorating blue water sail to Jost Van Dyke is just what you need to recharge your batteries. Jost Van Dyke is home to an almost endless variety of bars, restaurants, and nightlife, some of the most fun places in the BVI. Hike the island's lush rainforest hills to appreciate thrilling sights on land.

Sail through the dramatic Narrows, a gorgeous area of sea that separates Tortola from St. John, then turn southeast to thread the needle between Great Thatch and Little Thatch Islands. You'll enjoy lovely sights of the open ocean and great opportunities for play in the water. Curve back up Tortola to Cane Garden Bay, one of the area's favorite anchorages. Here is one of the BVI's best beaches, along with a local rum distillery where you can pay a dollar to sample four shots of their finest!

Norman Island is a last chance to explore in the water, at some truly epic underwater locations. The Indians is a series of rocks that jut dramatically out of the ocean, and the legendary Caves (inspiration for Treasure Island) are on everyone's must-see BVI list. Anchor in The Bight and watch the sunset, or venture ashore to enjoy the bars and restaurants that make this island famous.

It's time to head back to base, but there's still plenty of fun to be had along the way. You'll skirt around Peter Island to see some amazing little coves and beaches, then the decision is yours: take some more time enjoying the fun & sun at sea, or head back and explore the adventures that Tortola has to offer.

BVI Yacht Charter – Your Perfect Itinerary

The start of your bvi yacht charter – day 1.

The easiest way to start your BVI Yacht Charter is from Yacht Haven Grand, a 10 minute taxi ride from the Cyril E. King airport in St Thomas. However, if you prefer to fly directly into Beef Island , you´ll depart from Road Town, Tortola for The Bight, Norman Island (8 nautical miles). Norman Island is often referred to by locals as “Treasure Island”, as legends are resplendent with stories of buried pirate treasure. You can stop at the entrance of Norman Island to snorkel The Caves. The sea life is vibrant and it is exciting to snorkel into some of the caves, which are quite shallow. For the divers, “Angelfish Reef” is a good first dive. Ashore is the Pirates Pub Bar & Grill, where you’ll usually hear fun, live music. Beware of the barreled pirate rum!

Depart the Bight, Norman Island for the Indians (less than 1 nautical mile) Some of the water is 30-40 feet, but the sea life is stunning and extends all the way to the surface. Great place for snorkelling. Depart the Indians for Cooper Island (7 nautical miles) Cooper Island has an idyllic white, palm fringed beach for exploring and a wonderful restaurant/pub ashore. One of the highlights here is snorkelling in 6-8 feet of water over turtle grass. You can also come across spotted eagle rays. If you plan on diving, make sure you don’t miss the famous “Wreck Alley”. At night, you can see across the Sir Francis Drake Channel and sometimes can catch a glimpse of a 200’+ schooner with lighted sails passing by. One of the best features is the sunset with all of its brilliant colors!

Depart Cooper Island for Salt Island (less than 2 nautical miles) This is one of the highlights for the divers amongst you! We can ensure your BVI Yacht Charter has a PADI Divemaster onboard, just let us know. The Wreck of the RMS Rhone is located here, and you can either rent equipment or set up a rendezvous diving session. The snorkelers in your group can snorkel over and even touch the very beginning of this 1867 wreck. Salt Island is also great for exploring. Ashore are three salt ponds, which belong to the British Crown, but are operated by the local people. You can purchase harvested salt, explore the shore to find several shells, sea glass and various types of rocks. Depart Salt Island for Trellis Bay (7 to 8 nautical miles) Known for full moon parties and a great atmosphere, Trellis Bay has a vibrant bay decorated with an abundance of local art created by Aragorn, who owns the art studio ashore. The fresh baked bread loaves are delicious! You can usually find nightlife at the Last Resort. Many charter guests like to take their crew out to dinner one night. The Last Resort is a good choice.

Depart Trellis Bay for The Baths (6 nautical miles) It is a good idea to leave early so you can secure a prime mooring buoy at The Baths! The Baths are incredible unique sight, with huge, house-sized boulders literally piled on top of each other. If you feel like exploring, there are several paths through the boulders that lead to Devil’s Bay, one of the most beautiful bays in the British Virgin Islands. There is a restaurant bar at the top of The Baths, where you can have an enjoyable lunch with an awesome view and a pool. You can enjoy the rock climbing (there are ladders, platforms and ropes to assist) around the Baths, but the snorkeling is also amazing. You can easily spend all day here! Depart The Baths for Gorda Sound (8 to 9 nautical miles) Gorda Sound, at the north end of Virgin Gorda (also known as the “Fat Virgin”), has several places to go ashore and explore. If you visit Saba Rock, you’ll find beautiful landscaping with conch shells, hammocks to relax in, a gift shop and a game room.

Depart Gorda Sound for The Dogs (6 nautical miles) The Dogs are primarily a snorkel and dive stop. The reef is huge, extremely colorful and lively. Depart The Dogs for Great Harbor (13 nautical miles) Great Harbor is home of the notorious Foxy’s. Very lively parties can be found several times a year. When the big party isn’t happening, Foxy often plays his guitar live, adlibbing songs as he goes – usually funny songs about anyone in his presence. It’s a great time and the BBQ dinner is excellent! White Bay, with The Soggy Dollar Bar, is also a great choice for the night. Families with children will love the white sand beach.

Depart Great Harbor for Sandy Cay or Green Turtle Cay (less than 1 nautical mile) Drop anchor at Sandy Cay or pick up a mooring buoy at Green Turtle Cay. Both offer white, sandy, deserted islands with snorkeling, swimming and exploring. A short hike past hermit crabs and various lizards to the top of Sandy Cay should not be missed! For divers, Little Jost Van Dyke can’t be beat. When conditions are right, you can go to the “Bubbly Pool”. Featured in photo journals and magazine articles around the world, the “Bubbly Pool” is still a somewhat closely guarded secret of Jost Van Dyke. Nature’s jacuzzi, this naturally formed tidal pool is located behind jagged cliffs facing the open ocean from the north.

Depart Green Turtle Cay for Norman Island (13 to 15 nautical miles) Reminisce the last week with your group and enjoy one more night of total relaxation…on island time! Visit Pirate’s Pub again or give Willy T’s a go!

Its the end of your BVI Yacht Charter! Return to Road Town (6 to 7 nautical miles) or to Red Hook, St Thomas. One last short adventure to soak in the Caribbean sun all the way!

SAMPLE ITINERARY

7 night/8 day usvi/bvi *, *not all areas are accessible due to closures and/or restrictions.  please inquire with our concierge team..

One of the best things about starting and ending your trip in the USVI is taking advantage of spending some time on St John.  With its long stretches of white sandy beaches and beautiful, mountainous terrain wrapped in rich foliage as if draped in green velvet, St John is not to be missed.  As you leave the channel from Compass Point Marina, you will already have St John in your sites.  Take special note as you motor by Great St James and Christmas Cove, as this may be where you want to spend the last night of your charter.  As you make your way along the North shore of St John, take some time to stop to enjoy the beautiful, clear water and stop in a few of the quiet cays for a snorkel or for lunch onboard.  Plan to overnight in Francis Bay, which is the most favored on the northeastern side, offering excellent holding and protection. You're sure to see some turtles!  If you prefer, you can continue on through The Narrows by passing between Whistling Cay and Mary's Point (which you will want to do under power) and plan an overnight in Leinster Bay.  There are about 20 overnight moorings available and a dinghy mooring area at Waterlemon Cay.  This is also the entrance to the ruins of the Annaberg Sugar Mill, which has been restored by the National Park Service and is a beautiful and easy hike.

Plan on having dinner and drinks onboard that evening and take a deep breath . . . you're in the Caribbean!!!

Enjoy a quick breakfast onboard, then head directly to customs at The West End of Tortola to clear into the British Virgin Islands.  From there, work your way towards Norman Island for a night in The Bight.  Just outside of The Bight, don't miss The Indians for some of the most amazing snorkeling in the Virgin Islands.  Grab a ball and plan to stay for a while.  Once you have picked up a mooring ball in The Bight, you can dinghy over to the Caves for more unbeatable snorkeling.   Tucked away in the southeast corner is Pirate's Bight, a family-oriented beach bar and restaurant.  With its beautiful setting and calm waters, it is a great place to lounge during the day in their comfy beach chairs.  And, believe it or not, Pirate's Bight is even more beautiful in the evening, so plan to enjoy dinner there.

Click here to check out there amazing menu and extensive wine list.

Norman Island is also home to the world-famous Willy T.   Be sure to drop in for a drink or FEW!  Note, the Willy T can go from rated G to a hard R, so be aware if you are traveling with kids.  Stopping in around lunch time may be a better option and the kids will have a chance to jump off the upper deck into the beautiful, crystal clear waters you'll find in The Bight.

bvi yacht charter itinerary

After breakfast and maybe a morning paddle around the Bight, head towards Cooper island, but if the seas are somewhat calm, take a  little detour to Salt Island to snorkel the Wreck of the Rhone.  The rudder post comes within 15 feet of the surface and below that is the 17 foot bronze propeller. Also visible, even when snorkeling, is  the cargo deck, propeller shaft, mid shaft bearing and gearbox. Surrounding all this, is of course a spectacular reef system full of wreck loving fish.  This will be a highlight of your trip.

From there continue on  to Cooper Island in the early afternoon and grab your overnight mooring in Manchioneel Bay. Check out Cistern Point for more snorkeling or simply relax on the beach or by the bar at the Cooper Island Beach Club . There is a strict “no anchor” policy in effect at Cooper Island, due to the plentiful turtle grass on the bottom. Make sure you have called ahead for dinner reservations at the Beach Club to be able to enjoy a wonderful meal in a magnificent setting.

bvi yacht charter itinerary

Get an early start and beat the crowds to The Baths on the Southern end of Virgin Gorda. Pick up a National Parks mooring and dinghy to the designated area and swim in from there.  Remember to pay attention to the flag system, especially if there is a north swell. Spend the day exploring tunnels, caves and crystal-clear pools through the maze of massive boulders which have been resting there for literally millions of years. Go to the Top of the Baths for lunch and take a dip in the fresh-water swimming pool.  There you can enjoy a frozen drink while taking in the spectacular view looking down the entire Sir Francis Drake Channel.  Once the day charter crowds have had a chance to clear out, head down to Devil's Bay  . . . you'll have it practically to yourselves.

Continue on from there into the North Sound,  where you will find a plethora of wonderful ways to spend your time and a little something for everyone.   Be sure to use the well-marked north entrance and not the shortcut next to Mosquito Island when entering the Sound.  Leverick Bay is currently the only marina open in the North Sound.  If Michael Beans happens to be entertaining at Leverick Bay, it'll be worth your time to attend the "Happy Aaaar Show".  There are a couple of great restaurants to choose from and a nice swimming pool to hang out in.

If you don't plan to go to Anegada, you may want to consider spending an extra day in the North Sound and purchasing a day pass to Oil Nut Bay.

Considered one of the most luxurious and exclusive resort communities in the Caribbean, you will feel spoiled in this beautiful setting.

bvi yacht charter itinerary

Leaving from the North Sound directly to Anegada is a beautiful and easy sail.  Plan on leaving early so you can enjoy a nice long day on the gorgeous, miles-long stretches of white sandy beaches.  There are tons of options on Anegada for where to spend your time and everyone has a favorite.  Be sure to make your dinner reservation by 4pm to ensure you have a nice fresh lobster prepared for you.  Potter's By the Sea is a wonderful place to dined and enjoy nightly entertainment.

If you don't plan to go to Anegada or spend a second night in the North Sound, consider heading to Scrub Island and Scrub Island Resort.   This property is located on the beach a short distance from Marina Cay, Cam Bay Beach, and Lee Bay Beach.  Popular property highlights, other than 3 swimming pools and 3 restaurant, is free Wifi, 24 hour business center, laundry facilities, and a convenience store.

If you are thinking you would rather head on over to Jost Van Dyke, that would be another great option.  Be sure to stop at Sandy Spit for great pics and to just say you've been there.  If you have been there before, you'll definitely want to see how different it looks since the storms.  Spend the night in Diamond Cay.  Great snorkeling and B-Line Bar!  Foxy's Taboo will be returning soon, too!

Cow Wreck.jpg

Plan on spending an entire day and night in Great Harbour and White Bay on Jost Van Dyke, by far the most popular destination in all of the British Virgin Islands.  Hang on the beach or in the crystal clear water while sipping on a world famous Painkiller (or few) from Soggy Dollar Bar.   Enjoy lunch at Hendo's Hideout with their amazing food and tasty libations.   At the opposite end of White Bay, stop by Ivan's Stress Free Bar and chill in one of Kenny Chesney's favorite places in the BVI.   And, speaking of stress-free, visit the newest addition to the White Bay family, Ocean Spa BVI.  This unique floating spa offers a wide variety of spa services while being gently rocked by the swaying of the ocean and soothing  Caribbean breezes.

In the evening, dine at Foxy's  and take in the sights and sounds of this world-famous little bar that is a must do when visiting the Virgin Islands.

Hendo's.jpg

There are a couple of things you could do from here.  From Great Harbour, sail over to Cane Garden Bay and visit Myett's for lunch.  The restaurant there will soon be a Pusser's.  While you're there, take a tour of the Callwood Rum Distillery, a 400-year old landmark. Tastings are only $1 for 4 samplings.

If you prefer to skip Cane Garden Bay and go straight to St John from Jost Van Dyke, that is an option as well.  Once you're there, grab a mooring ball at Honeymoon Beach where it's easy to dinghy in to Cruz Bay.  Spend some time shopping and dining for lunch at Mongoose Junction, only a couple minutes walk from the dinghy dock near the National Parks Building.  If you plan to spend the night on St John, spend some time during the day exploring some of the beautiful beaches or hiking trails in the National Park.  For dinner, Extra Virgin, The Terrace, Morgan's Mango, or Greengo's are a few of our favorites.  Of course, Woody's and Longboard's can't be missed for the later crowd.

Another option for your last night, especially if you have an earlier flight out or just prefer a quieter evening in calmer waters, you could make your way to Christmas Cove on Great St. James.  Don't miss out on getting your pizza order in at the only floating pizza restaurant in the entire Caribbean.  Pizza Pi is a must do and they will deliver to your boat or you can pick up by dinghy.  Unique menu items and unique experience!

myetts-cane-garden-bay-restaurant.jpg

Returning to base . . . Please plan on returning to base in time for you to be off of your boat by NOON, unless other arrangements have been made and agreed upon with Virgin Islands Yacht Charters.  When approaching the entrance from the West, care should be taken to not mistake the "false entrance" with the actual mouth of the harbor.  If you are not able to identify a green buoy on the port side of the channel do not enter.

The channel into the Lagoon is well marked and provides no problems after you have identified Rotto Cay and its relationship to other landmarks.  Leaving Coculus Rocks and Rotto Cay to the starboard, proceed to Grassy Cay where you will pick up the channel markers.

Luxury Yacht Charters: Inclusive Options Await

  • By Yachting Staff
  • August 26, 2024

135-foot Horizon Stay Salty

Here’s something you don’t see on the charter market all too often: larger motoryachts offering all-inclusive rates in the British Virgin Islands and Bahamas.

Typically, larger motoryachts are listed for charter with weekly base rates. Those base rates cover the boat and crew, but not expenses such as fuel, food, drinks and gratuity. The idea is that different clients want to do different things on charter, so the variable costs are adjustable.

By contrast, smaller crewed boats that stick to generally fixed itineraries and can better predict the associated costs—in particular, catamarans in the Virgin Islands—are offered with inclusive rates.

That’s what makes the news so interesting about the 135-foot Horizon Stay Salty and the 120-foot Sovereign Real Summertime. Denison Yachting says these larger yachts are now offering all-inclusive charter packages in the British Virgin Islands and Bahamas.

120-foot Sovereign

“This is an exciting initiative to simplify and encourage new charter clients to try one of the most epic travel experiences imaginable,” Ben Farnborough, Denison’s chief operating officer, stated in a press release. “Often we’re made aware that there’s a perception outside of the yachting industry that chartering a yacht is inherently complex. Our goal here is to change that. These all-inclusive Denison charter options are straightforward and seamless.”

The two yachts are being offered with inclusive rates based on fixed itineraries and menus, without the standard preference sheets that charter clients typically fill out so the crew can provision whatever guests request to have on board. Denison’s team instead worked with the yacht owners and crew to determine defined dates, docking prices, fuel costs, cocktail lists and menus.

The idea is similar to the way that Denison worked with Magellan Jets to offer a coordinated package for jet travel from Teterboro, New Jersey, to Nassau, Bahamas, at a fee of $48,000 for 12 passengers.

Stay Salty is a 2010 build that most recently was refitted this year. The yacht accommodates 12 guests in six staterooms, including an upper-deck master. Tenders for watersports fun include a 34-foot Jupiter.

Real Summertime is a 2000 build that most recently was refitted in 2022. Accommodations on this yacht are for as many as 12 guests in five staterooms, including a main-deck master. Onboard amenities include an outdoor cinema, and tenders include a 37-foot Boston Whaler Outrage.

Is there any wiggle room in the all-inclusive plans? Yes, for an extra fee. Denison Yachting says the inclusive rate is intended to appeal to people who want to avoid the planning process, but that guests who want bespoke elements in their all-inclusive charter can work with Denison’s team to accommodate those requests at an additional cost.
