The best sailing shoes are both waterproof and slip-resistant. Outdoor boots are popular, but specialty sailing shoes are available.

Traditional sailing shoes are typically made of suede or similar material and feature a low-profile design and relatively flat soles. Modern sailing shoes are designed for offshore use and made of waterproof synthetic material.

Types of Sailing Shoes

Sailing shoes come in two primary types. These are stylish traditional sailing shoes (which are made of natural materials) and modern waterproof offshore sailing shoes. Both are practical and useful aboard sailboats.

Traditional Sailing Shoes

Traditional sailing shoes have been around for almost a century. These shoes, also known as "yacht shoes," are made from suede leather and are soft and flexible. They're not usually waterproof, but they can be made more water-resistant using chemical treatments.

Traditional sailing shoes are primarily used as a style statement, but they can be quite practical for some sailors. After all, they were designed to be used on boats. They utilize a flat sole that features a unique non-slip texture, which was designed to give sailors traction on a wet deck.

Modern Waterproof Sailing Shoes

Modern waterproof sailing shoes are made from synthetic materials and engineered for traction on wet surfaces. These shoes are preferred by offshore sailing crews who need to stay warm and dry in rough weather conditions.

Sailing Boots

Sailing boots are often used in conjunction with full-body foul weather gear. These boots resemble snow or rain boots, and they're made of a waterproof material such as rubber.

Sailing boots are often reserved for foul weather, as they're heavier and more clumsy than modern lightweight sailing shoes. That said, every offshore sailor should have a set of waterproof boots onboard.

Best Traditional Sailing Shoes

Traditional sailing shoes are practical, stylish, and still widely available. High-quality examples can last for years, and they're a staple of yacht clubs and sailing organizations across the country. Here are four of the best traditional sailboat shoes.

1. Sperry Leeward Boat Shoe 

Sperry practically invented the 20th-century boat shoe, and they're still the go-to shoe company for sailors across the world. The Sperry Leeward Boat Shoe  is an excellent introduction to traditional boat shoes.

Sperry's traditional Leeward shoe is a tan leather slip-on deck shoe made of a water-resistant hide. It features a rubber sole, which incorporates the Sperry anti-slip design that's popular across the line.

The design of the shoe is simple, and it's stitched together using thick and sturdy thread for long service life. Its water-resistant treatment makes it easy to clean and quick to dry should it become waterlogged.

This traditional marine shoe is both comfortable and stylish, making it ideal for regattas and dockside events. Despite its looks, the Sperry Leeward shoe is also practical. The Sperry Top-Deck line is popular with sailors and boat owners, as it stands up well to spray and slippery conditions.

2. L.L. Bean Casco Bay Boat Mocs

Counterintuitively, the L.L. Bean flat non-textured sole actually has excellent anti-slip characteristics. It's made of sturdy leather that resists sliding on wet decks, and it features slight outsole siphons to increase grip on wet surfaces.

The L.L. Bean Casco Bay Boat shoe is constructed with durable yet flexible leather that is comfortable and easy to clean. It features a leather liner inside, which works well with short socks and wears evenly over time.

That said, the leather liner is designed to work with or without socks. This is a plus, as it makes taking the shoe on and off easy after a day on the beach or walking around the deck barefoot.

These shoes feature a lace-up top with leather laces. They can be tied and left in place, as this is a slip-on shoe. The L.L. Bean Casco Bay shoe can be worn with or without socks, just like the Sperry mentioned above.

3. J. Crew Classic Leather Boat Shoes

J. Crew produces an affordable and classic-looking set of boat shoes that are ideal for a first set. These shoes are made of suede-like leather, and they feature a non-slip rubber sole with a traditional profile.

J. Crew Classic Leather sailing shoes  follow the stylistic trends of early boat shoes, yet they incorporate some modern materials that make them more practical for use on a sailboat. These include a non-marking rubber sole that's specifically designed to improve traction on wet and dry surfaces.

These J. Crew boat shoes feature leather laces in a way similar to the L.L. Bean Casco Bay shoe. Like the L.L. Bean variants, these shoes can be worn with or without socks.

The leather is treated for easy cleaning, and they're hand-stitched for strength and longevity. The laces come through the sides of the shoe through grommets, which helps prevent the leather from wearing or breaking around the entry and exit points.

These classic boat shoes are a perfect first pair, and they're affordable enough to wear frequently. They also function as sailboat shoes, which is a plus as many new "boat shoes" are designed for looks only.

4. Sperry Gold Cup Original Boat Shoe

Knowing the right time to wear shoes, and the best footwear to be safe and comfy is part of a great sailing experience

It only takes one stubbed toe on deck to make you wish you’d worn shoes. Or worse, a near-miss slip overboard that scares the daylights out of you. But even if you’re just heading out on a gentle summer's day sail, or for a cruisey harbour trip on a friend’s launch — you’ll likely ask yourself, what are the best shoes to wear sailing? And what shouldn’t I wear on a boat? Keeping yourself safe from injury, protected from the elements and comfortable at sea is key to your enjoyment while on the water – and wearing the right shoes is just as important as choosing the best sailing jacket . Ultimately, when it comes to sailing, you want to do everything possible to stay onboard, and having the right footwear will help you do that.  We’ll look at the best types of sailing shoes, and some casual streetwear shoes that you can wear sailing for a variety of occasions. As with all my clothing recommendations for sailing — purpose , fit and comfort are more important than style (put yourself out in the ocean and tell me how much you think about looking good rather than focussing on survival!). Having said that these days there’s some great looking shoes that fit all your needs — so you can actually have it all. Good boating shoes are a worthwhile investment and there’s a wide range on the market. So how do you choose the right ones? To help you make that decision and spend your money wisely, I’ll answer all the common questions about sailing shoes and the key factors to look for when buying a pair. We’ll also take a look at some of the best footwear available on the market and the features that make them so popular.

On most boats, there are some definite shoe styles that you should avoid wearing sailing. If you’ve seen the series Below Decks , you’ll notice the crew typically wear bare feet, and guests are asked to remove their shoes before coming onboard. This is because high heels, heeled wedges, platforms, and boots can mark and damage decks and floors and carpets. Also, on a large charter boat or superyacht, guests typically aren’t required to do any active sailing or spend long-periods out in the elements so barefoot is safe.

On a sailing yacht, these styles of shoe don’t offer good stability or grip moving around while the yacht’s heeled over — so they’re just not practical footwear. You might also like to read what clothing I’ll never wear sailing again (and what you should wear) .

The 6 key features of a great boat shoe are:

Traction: Choose a non-slip sole that gives you great traction on a wet deck. When the boat’s heeled over and waves are washing on deck, you’ll want the best grip possible. Shoes with rubber soles (or similar) with a good tread pattern, are ideal.

Water-resistance: It’s not very fun sailing with cold wet feet! Pick a boat shoe designed with water-resistant material so your feet will be kept as dry and warm as possible. 

Quick drying: Look for shoes made from materials that dry quickly. You’ll want to avoid soggy, cold feet.

Durability: No matter how careful you are, your feet will take bumps and knocks while sailing onboard – especially if conditions are a little rougher. Invest in shoes made from high-quality materials that are durable and will last you a long time.

Full protection: A great boat shoe should provide protection from water, but also the wind and sun. Sunburnt feet aren’t fun.

Fit and Comfort: It’s essential for safety and performance while sailing that your shoe has a secure fit, with easy movement and is comfortable to wear. Lace-up designs are a great option for adjusting the size depending on the season – as thicker socks (or two pairs) are often required in winter. Many sailing shoes are so comfy you can wear them onshore too.

Non-marking: You want shoe soles that don’t leave marks on the deck as you move about. Typically rubber soles are a safe choice, and light-coloured soles are preferred by most boaties.

Sailing shoes and deck shoes are general terms for footwear worn while sailing. Boat shoes are used as an overall term too – but there’s a style of these which have a lot more history to them. 

Back in 1935, Paul Sperry was sailing on the Long Island Sound when he almost lost his life to a slippery deck during rough seas. Later, when he noticed his cocker spaniel run down icy hills without slipping, he set about inventing a non-slip shoe, using his dog's paw grooves as inspiration. He spent years developing and perfecting a new type of deck shoe sole – with a pattern cut into the natural rubber. The short answer is yes technically you can. Some tennis shoes, sneakers and moccasins are great for fine weather sailing, where there’s little chance of your feet getting wet. The longer answer is that whether it’s the best and safest option, depends on the season, weather conditions and the type of sailing you’ll be doing.

Is it ever ok to ditch the shoes onboard?

As I mentioned earlier, wearing bare feet greatly increases your chances of stubbing your toe on a cleat on deck, or scraping an ankle on gear as you’re sailing. Both of which will a) really hurt and, b) if you injure yourself badly, or fall overboard — you’ll really question whether being footloose was worth it.

BUT honestly there’s still something wonderful about sailing barefoot. Feeling the boat shift underneath — the warmth of the deck, the connection between sailor and vessel. And I’ll confess, if it’s not raining and cold then my preference is letting my feet grip the deck in their own monkey toe way. I feel most balanced onboard without shoes.

I’ve learned though, through knocks, bruises and sunburn that my feet are best protected when I wear my shoes. And there’s no way I’d go up on deck on some of our rougher, winter trips without my sailing boots for grip. I certainly wouldn’t wear socks up on top underway, even though I’ve been known to relax off-watch in the cockpit wearing those. I value sticking to the deck and will take all the help I can get from proper footwear.

So by all means enjoy time with no shoes onboard — you’ll know when its safe and practical. And when it’s needed, make sure to throw your shoes on.

Here's What Shoes to Wear Sailing (and which not)

Invited to a sailing trip with friends, but don't know what shoes you need to wear? No worries. This is a common question, so I thought it'd be time to answer it properly in this article.

What shoes to wear sailing? You want shoes with non-slip, non-marking soles. Most non-marking soles are made of rubber. Leather soles will generally leave marks on the deck. Deck shoes are generally a safe choice, but if you don't have these, you could also use sneakers with light rubber soles. Just make sure the soles don't leave marks.

What shoe is best for you depends on the situation though. At the end of the post, I'll also summarize what you want to avoid at all cost. Sailing barefoot is one of them.

If you're invited to a friend's sailboat, you should consider what shoes you bring to the party. Maybe the captain already gave you fair warning that they don't want you showing up with leather soles or those skid-mark-producing baseball shoes. So what should you wear?

• Deck shoes with non-marking rubber soles
• Plastic sneakers with non-marking rubber soles - light colors will likely skid less
• High-quality water shoes
• Dinghy or sailing boots
• Barefoot & flip-flops are popular but not recommended

As you can see, there are some high-end expensive options you only want to purchase if you plan on sailing often. There are, however, also a couple of good alternatives you probably have laying around the house.

General tips for sailing footwear

At its heart you want three things from your shoes:

• You want a good grip on-deck
• You don't want to leave marks on the deck
• You want to protect your feet from water, cold, and injury

I'll explain these tips more in-depth later on, but I want to take a look at the specific shoes first. So let's dive into the different options in detail below.

Die-hard sailors: deck shoes

As with anything, you will probably have to compromise. In many situations, deck shoes with special rubber soles are your best bet. What's special about their soles is that they don't leave marks on the deck. However, not a lot of non-sailing people have these laying around - and if you do, they're probably those fashionable ones with leather soles.

If you have to buy them for a one-off trip, it's quite costly. These shoes cost anywhere between $60 - $150. Unless you're planning on sailing regularly, that's quite an investment for a day on the water. Luckily, there are some home-and-garden options you probably have lying around.

Lie-around no-slip, non-marking, feet-protecting alternatives

So what could you wear for your one-time trip? Well, if it's hot outside, I recommend wearing no shoes at all . It's the easy way out. However, if you're a novice, you need to be very aware that you don't have any protection. You will probably stub your toe or something, and it will hurt like hell. But people have actually reported broken toes, cuts from the webbing, and so on.

Anyway, it will only work for slow day trip sailing, with predictable winds and good weather. With racing and sailing high-speed, most captains won't permit you aboard without shoes. So it's not recommended

If you do need protection (ie. from the cold), I recommend grabbing some plastic sneakers with a light color sole . Black soles won't always leave marks, but they mostly will. Your safest bet is white light-colored soles. Most sneakers are also quite comfortable and are mostly designed with sports in mind. So some sneakers will provide a good grip. Please try this out beforehand, because some popular sneaker soles are very slippery when on a wet deck. They also dry quickly, as opposed to leather shoes. The thinner the material, the more quickly it will dry.

Another good one-time alternative is canvas shoes since they'll dry out quickly. Canvas shoes aren't a great long-term solution. Neither are sneakers by the way. Canvas shoes are very prone to wear and tear. The sun alone will probably beat them up pretty badly (UV wears down canvas real quick). Also, your All-Star-type laces are a pain to take off once they're wet. Just so you know.

Other good options

One of the best tips for warm-water sailors are high-quality water shoes , like these ALEADER adventure shoes on Amazon (click to check the current price ). I haven't used them myself since I haven't done any long-term passages that required some real footwear - instead, I just take off my shoes when it gets warm. But I have heard from other sailors that these are great, and for the price, you could even consider it for your odd trip now and then.

If you want to keep things simple in warm weather, most sailors default to flip flops or sandals (with rubber soles).

Dinghy sailing

I mention this one separately since you want to take a different approach for this type of sailing. In dinghy sailing, your feet WILL get wet. You will take on water, and you might capsize as well. You want a good protecting shoe that dries out very quickly and provides grip as well. Most dinghy sailors go for a special dinghy boot. Sailboats can get pretty choppy from time to time. Having soles that provide good grip is essential. Especially for beginners, this will help you to ... well, not fall overboard. The deck can will very slippery when wet. So having soles with some sort of grip pattern is definitely a must.

No marks, no dirt

Why is it important to leave no marks on-board? Well, most decks are very hard to clean. Some fiberglass decks use grip paint, giving them a rough grid, making cleaning rubber skids especially difficult.

A deck is somewhat of a living room: you want to keep it clean and good-looking. Leaving marks is considered a major sailing sin.

It can get quite cold on the water. Also, the deck hardware, deck grip paint, and altogether pointy bits on a sailboat can really hurt your foot if you're unlucky.

If anything, try to stay away from the proven problematic shoes. So what should you absolutely avoid?

• any metal will corrode - so avoid zippers and so on
• for longer trips, don't wear canvas
• avoid high heels
• avoid leather soles
• barefoot or flip-flops

This might seem super obvious, but well, if it wasn't for anybody out there, I'm glad I've mentioned it here. High heels on a moving boat are mess. They will also piss off the captain, since you'll be scratching and marking the deck non-stop. One of the worst options.

Shoes with zippers

Zipper shoes will probably be very uncomfortable. Zippers won't give when your feet become wet or hot and swell up. Also, metal parts will corrode over time, especially with salt water.

Canvas is no good

For longer trips, you can be sure your canvas will get modly over time. They tend to not dry out as well and will start to smell badly after a couple of weeks. Canvas will also discolor very quickly on open waters. Your shoes won't be pleased.

Leather soles are no good

Leather soles will definitely leave your personal skid marks. Do the captain a favor and leave any leather soling at home!

Barefoot or flip-flops

I know, I recommended these before, but I've changed my mind. It's no good sailing barefoot. If you're motoring steadily in easy waves, sure, take of your shoes. But you need to have a good pair of shoes on you, in case you need protection. Because as with anything when sailing: if you need them, by God, you'll desperately need them.

Sailing Gear Packing List

Ideally, you have one pair of boat shoes that are dedicated to sailing. That way you are sure your soles are always clean and won't mark the deck. You don't have to buy new shoes though, as long as you keep the three fundamentals in mind: clean, protection, and grip. For most one-timers, sneakers with white rubber soles will do just fine.

Over the last decade or so, there has been an increasing emphasis on sailing kit designed specifically for women, including women’s boating shoes.

This is great news as, while some pieces of kit such as lifejackets are reasonably acceptable in unisex form, traditional leather deck shoes designed for men  are often impractical and a poor fit for women sailors.

As one of the most essential items of sailing kit, before choosing a pair of women’s boating shoes, it’s therefore worth looking at the many different styles and options available.

While budget is often a starting point in a decision-making process, it’s not always a case of spending the most, but more about what how you will be using the shoes, and how they fit when worn.

For relaxed sailing a good quality pair of traditional style leather deck/boat shoes is still popular, as they are both practical while sailing, non-marking on deck, but also look good and are comfortable to wear on shore.

For more active crew work, racing, and wetter keelboats, there are now many women’s designs of technical sailing trainers/sneakers. What to look for in women’s boat shoes

Desire to wear – Comfort is extremely important, so try on as many pairs as you can before you make a purchase. Synthetic trainer-style shoes tend not to stretch after use so if you are going down the ‘trainer’ route, choose a size that fits well initially.

With quality-made leather deck shoes such as Wuzzos and Orca Bay, which have thicker leather and no synthetic lining, will mold nicely to your foot with wear. If that’s the fit you’re looking for, choose a pair that fits more snugly instead of the ‘next size up’, because the leather will soon soften around your foot.

Style v practicality – As well as looking good, bear in mind practicalities. For hardcore sailing, boat shoes need to fit securely around the foot so they don’t come off when scrambling across the deck in slippery, wet conditions.

Ideally, leather deck shoes should have what is known as a 360 degree lacing system where each shoe uses one continuous lace threaded along the side to the front tie eyelets to allow fine tuning for a snug fit.

What to Wear on a Catamaran – What You Should Bring!

Sailing trips have emerged as an exciting and budget-friendly option for regular land vacations.

However, sailing trips are also unique and very different from land-based vacations in many important ways.

Therefore, it is important to plan carefully so that you are not left with regret in the middle of a picture-perfect sail.

One of the areas where a lot of novice sailors tend to go overboard is packing suitable clothes during their sailing trips.

I have been witness to chartering parties not only packing way more than what they would need aboard the boat but also packing the wrong kinds of clothes.

I cannot help but emphasize that a sailing trip is very different from other holidays as space is in short supply.

The mantra should always be to pack light and pack right. In this article, therefore, my aim shall be to educate novice sailors on what to wear on a catamaran .

Catamaran is Different Than a Monohull.

There was a time when monohulls were the undisputed kings of the sailing industry on account of their unmatched sailing characteristics. Not anymore.

Boat designers have, over the years, improved and refined sailing cats so much that they can easily rival the best monohulls.

On the other hand, catamarans have a strong advantage when it comes to space and comfort.

You would have more and bigger cabins on a 40 feet catamaran when compared to a similar-sized monohull.

In addition, amateur sailors truly appreciate the stability of a sailing catamaran as it is not prone to pitching like monohulls.

In other words, if you are looking for a more relaxing sailing trip instead of a performance-driven sail, a catamaran is clearly the better option.

It would accommodate more of your friends and family, as well as offer them larger cabin spaces.

Sailing on a catamaran means that you can afford to pack a little more generously compared to a monohull and enjoy your evening wear in ample social spaces.

What to Wear for A Short Trip?

A short trip aboard a catamaran can be either a day sail or a weekend trip. For day sails, of course, you do not need to pack anything at all except your sunscreen lotion.

It is simply too short a trip to require you to change aboard the boat. Typically, you should look to dress casually.

Even on a weekend-long sailing trip, you should look to keep things extremely light.

Such sailing trips are long enough to require you to change but not long enough to warrant having your clothes washed.

Ideally, you should pack no more than one extra set of clothes.

If the trip does not involve any onshore trips, then you may get by with just an extra set of swimwear.

Depending on the weather forecast, you may also pack in a light water-resistant jacket to guard against wind chill and rain.

What to Bring for An Extended Trip

An extended sailing trip, on the other hand, one that lasts at least a week, requires you to carefully plan the clothes to pack.

A lot of the decisions about packing would greatly depend on the amenities available on the boat as well as the destination and expected weather.

For example, if the chartered catamaran has a decent laundry facility onboard, then you may consider packing lightly.

Similarly, if your sailing trip also involves anchoring at popular coastal towns and visiting trendy bars, restaurants, and cafes, then you may consider packing in a skirt or trousers.

Other than that, you would be safe by packing light and casual wear.

Some people, especially ladies, are a little averse to having their underwear dried out in public. To get over this predicament, you can pack in a set of underwear for each day of your trip.

You would also need no more than 3-4 sets of bathing suits for the entire duration of your sail.

Always remember to pack in a light but effective jacket made of synthetic material for rainy and windy days.

Do I Need to Wear Shoes?

Most of the time, you would be walking around barefoot aboard the boat. However, boat shoes and flip-flops are obviously required on a sailing trip, especially if you would be making on-shore trips.

Make sure your boat shoes are light with a soft rubber sole.

Hard soles are not only unnecessary, but they may also scuff up the boat’s surface.

For those who are planning adventure activities on-shore during their trip, lightweight sports shoes would do nicely.

Do take care to make sure that your flip-flops provide a firm grip and are anti-slip.

What is Not Recommended to Wear?

Sailing trips are all about keeping things light and casual.

Its core philosophy is to get by with as little as possible. Therefore, anything that goes against this philosophy should be strictly avoided.

For example, there is really no need to bring your expensive formal wear when you are leaving on a sailing trip.

Whether it is formal evening gowns for women or jackets for men, these clothes are best kept away from your packing list.

Similarly, formal shoes and high heels do not belong to a sailing vacation.

For men, it is suggested that they pack no more than a pair of jeans for their trip, as they are not only heavy but also unnecessary aboard the boat.

List of Recommended Wear

1) Clothing:

• Casual dresses for women to throw over their swimsuits.
• Ladies should also pack in tank tops and shorts.
• Men should pack in nylon or synthetic and airy shirts and boating shorts .
• Swimming suits for ladies.
• Men should pack in swimming trunks.
• In addition, women should pack in a pair of leggings for cold days.
• A suitable number of underwear.
• In addition, both men and women would need fast-drying towels .
• A light nylon jacket would suffice for rainy days.

2) Footwear:

For an extended sailing trip, women would need to pack:

• A pair of soft-soled sandals for trips ashore
• A pair of boat shoes to wear on board the boat.
• A pair of flip flops

3) Other accessories:

In addition to your normal toiletries, do not forget to pack in

• Your favorite hairbrush
• A quality pair of polarized sunglasses
• A wide-brimmed hat or even a baseball cap
• Plenty of sunscreens
• A dry bag .

Additional tips

1) While a hairdryer is useful, you should consider not lugging it on your sail as it can really tax the batteries aboard your boat.

2) Do not pack your clothes in hard luggage. Make use of soft luggage such as duffel bags . They take up less space and do not risk causing scuff marks on the boat.

3) As far as possible, make sure the clothes you pack are made of fiber that not only keeps you comfortable but also dries fast.

4) Since you would be spending a lot of time on the water, you would likely partake in water-based activities. If you do not like the idea of using rental snorkel gear , make sure you pack one of your own.

By now, you should have a good idea about how important it is to pack light and pack right when it comes to sailing trips. Packing light also makes your trip more enjoyable as you focus more on the vacation rather than looking after your belongings. However, it is also important that you pack the right type of gear such as quality polarized sunglasses , fast-drying towels , etc.

It amazes me that you mention the room on board a catamaran is so much more spacious than a monohull. On the face of it, your typical boat seems bigger. Maybe it’s just that I’ve seem smaller cat’s than what your talking about. Anyway, I can’t imagine bringing by formal ware onto any type of boat other than a cruise ship! Shorts & thongs for me! (yes, thongs as I’m an Aussie, not a thong as it’s known in the UK!!)

Well, if you compare a monohull and a cat at the same length, the catamaran is much bigger. No doubt about it:)

It is not unusual that people wear formal clothes on a boat, but only for special entertainments, and the boat has to be enough big in order to welcome a large amount of guest. While on a cruise ship you’ll have to wear formal clothes for dinner:)

Unless it’s the weather for boots, most people wear deck shoes on a boat. They might be the conventional moccasin type or the newer generation of high-performance deck trainers , but either way they’re boat shoes rather than boat sandals.

There’s a potential problem with shoes on a boat, however. They can easily get wet, and with a combination of soggy shoes, wet feet and warm weather – well, things can soon start smelling a little ripe.

Even if your feet stay dry, they can become hot and sweaty in enclosed shoes. So why not wear a pair of boat sandals? We wear them on shore to let the air get to our feet, so why not on a boat?

These Tevas are made entirely from injection-moulded EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate), a sort of closed-cell rubbery foam. Each sandal weighs a mere 135g (less than 5oz) and so the Hurricane Drifts really will drift along on the surface if you become parted from them.

This is one of them and, while perhaps not a boat sandal in the conventional sense (though Crocs describe it as a sandal), it has a strap around the back and a lot of holes to let the air in. The holes also let the water out, because it’s designed to be amphibious.

Although intended principally for use in and around the water and made of a lightweight, non-absorbent foam, Swiftwaters have, perhaps surprisingly, also found favour with some serious hikers. A version with mesh uppers is available too.

Nalu Aqua Surf Wetsuit Shoes

Most of the boat sandals and water-shoes we’re looking at here are for wearing if your feet are likely to get wet. But what if you’re going to be in the water as much as out of it? If you want to swim ashore from an anchorage to a stony beach, for example – as I did this summer – it can make life much more comfortable if you have something to protect the soles of your feet.

That’s where these Nalu wetsuit shoes come in. They’re not designed to be particularly tough or hard-wearing, but are so light and inexpensive that you can keep a pair wherever you might need them. Made from neoprene, with rubber soles, a hook-and-loop fastener and mesh sections in the uppers for rapid draining, they come in a choice of four colours.

• Reasons to avoid: Some reviewers report quality control issues.

Vibram Fivefingers V-Aqua

Despite their unusual appearance, these water-shoes have a keen following among watersports enthusiasts.

I know an instructor who practically lives in them during the summer, and says they provide grip, protection and freedom of movement as well as drying very quickly.

And they can be washed in the machine. Essentially they’re what you wear if you would otherwise go barefoot.

A thin (2mm) EVA insole offers some cushioning, while a silicone print on the inside helps stop your feet sliding around when wet.

A rubber outsole just under 4mm thick provides grip and extra protection. Another unusual feature of these shoes is the drainage holes in the soles, so water drains straight through them as well as through the mesh uppers.

• Reasons to buy: Excellent grip for watersports.

• Reasons to avoid: Relatively expensive; unusual styling won’t suit all tastes.

Grition Hiking Sandals

If you’re looking for sandals that provide toe-protection and that don’t mind getting wet, but you don’t want to splash out on a pair of Keen’s Newports or Clearwaters, this pair from Grition might be the answer.

Described as hiking sandals and with an appreciably lower price tag, they’re nonetheless more water-friendly than most sandals in addition to having the enclosed toe.

Polyurethane webbing straps and a mesh liner help them to dry quickly, while a cushioned EVA midsole and rubber outer sole should ensure comfort, durability and grip underfoot. They’re secured by elasticated lacings and a hook-and-loop fastener on the heel strap.

• Reasons to buy: Cushioned midsole and outer sole should make for a comfy fit.

• Reasons to avoid: Not specifically designed for sailing.

What to look for in a pair of boat sandals

If you’re going to wear sandals for active sailing, they will need to offer a good degree of protection. An enclosed toe might be an idea, because boats present plenty of painful toe-stubbing opportunities. They will also need to have a good grip in both the dry and the wet.

Sandals designed for trekking are often perfectly happy in wet conditions, but typically have soles with deep treads that don’t offer the best grip on a smooth deck and will also tend to trap stones and debris.

Something else that might not make you popular on board is a sole that leaves a trail of black skid-marks: non-marking soles are the way to go.

Any more fundamentals? Well, if sandals are going to dry quickly, it helps if they’re made from materials that don’t absorb water. Neither do you want them to become slippery so they slide around on your feet when wet.

Being on a boat doesn’t always demand high-speed action, however, so a pair of casual sandals or even flip-flops that you can easily kick off might be fine for relaxing.

Boat Shoes & Bathing Suits

What started off as a week-long trip to test-sail a Privilège 500 in the BVI quickly transformed into a 3-month journey that would change the course of events for this sailing couple.

They originally made the trip to Nanny Cay in mid-March after making an offer on a Privilège 500. As recent global events were closing in on the Caribbean, it quickly became apparent that the BVI was moving toward a lockdown to stem the tide of the coronavirus pandemic.

John and Noelia had two days to make a decision; fly out of the BVI and postpone the delivery of their yacht, or remain. They chose the latter moved aboard on April 4th after closing on the sale – well into the height of the lockdown order. For the next seven weeks they were effectively in lockdown and couldn’t sail, leave their anchorage or go ashore.

Sea Trial by Fire

It wasn’t until mid-May that they were allowed limited access to shore, and on the 21 st , with a suitcase full of swimwear, they left the dock. This was the first time they sailed s/v Sayonara on their own, and it would be a nine-day offshore passage from Tortola to their home port in Palm Beach, FL.

It takes a certain amount of confidence and skill to venture on any passage. For John and Noelia, that confidence came partly from owning a Privilège catamaran.

“We have a lot of confidence in this boat,” said John. “I’ve sailed since I was 11 years old but didn’t have blue water experience. We joined the  Salty Dawg Rally , which was more of a collection of volunteers providing sailing information.”

Originally they had planned to hire a delivery captain to bring the boat back to Florida, but instead they opted to do the passage on their own, valuing their privacy on-board above all else. The Salty Dawg Rally gave them that additional support to leave the dock.

Without the formal dinners or parties typically associated with rallies, they left on the “ Homeward Bound ” flotilla for the United States. 

“We’re thankful we joined the Rally to receive information like weather routing from  Chris Parker  – which was great. For us, this was essential,” added Noelia. “I was saying right from the beginning that we can do this – I wasn’t afraid. Honestly, I don’t have much sailing experience. I always said ‘I have five years sailing experience watching John sail.’ But I never had any doubt that we can do this as a couple.”

“I think I was more worried about the trip [than Noelia] and had some trepidation and anxiety,” said John. “In reality it was a lot easier than I had thought it up in my head.”

They also got some instruction on the boat’s systems from Privilege Catamaran America’s yacht guru, Jules. He gave them invaluable information and advice and was on-hand for any additional questions.

“Jules was awesome,” said John. “We had a great experience working with him. He was there around the clock to answer all our questions.

Single-handed sailing

Noelia’s first experience on the test sail was marred by seasickness. She says she typically gets seasick, and even well-intentioned advice given to her by other cruisers didn’t prevent her from getting sick during the first day of the passage.

“Having a safe boat for when Noelia gets seasick is important,” said John. “I had to be prepared to single-hand the boat if necessary.” Luckily, she was fine for the remainder of the passage.

According to John, there were two main reasons for buying the Privilege catamaran – one was safety, the other was what he referred to as “the walk-in closet”, a place for Noelia to keep her collection of Louboutin shoes.

“In all seriousness, there are two things that sold us our boat. One was how seaworthy and capable on ocean passages it is, and two, the comfort of the boat, the usability and fit and finish on everything.” said John, adding that this is a big step for Noelia, who is very particular, and it was essential that she felt at ease to stay on board for any amount of time.

Noelia particularly enjoys the large master suite that takes up the whole space in the forward part of the hull. Calling it a ‘cabin’ would be an understatement, she explained. The master is more akin to a retreat, with a separate shower, vanity, and dressing area with a wardrobe spacious enough for anyone’s shoe collection.

Back to the beginning

Their story really started four years ago when they stepped aboard a Privilège for the first time. They continued their search by going to the Miami boat show multiple times, as well as shows in France, Annapolis and Newport. They met Richard and Rob at the boat show when they returned to Miami nearly two years ago. John later sailed with them aboard a 5 Series from Barcelona to La Grande Motte on a delivery. In the end, they circled back and bought the boat that they were the most excited about.

“We spoke to other people who ordered production boats,” explained John. “There, you order from a distributer, and it’s made by a manufacturing company, and any customization is done by a third party. If anything isn’t to your liking then there is a lot of finger pointing. We just dealt with Richard, there is no finger pointing and he just got things done.”

A week before leaving the BVI they called Richard to ask if they could have radar installed before their long passage, explained John. While they were originally planning to get it installed in Florida, they thought it best to have it for their passage. Three days later, it was done.

The time aboard s/v Sayonara and the level of confidence gained during the passage has meant that their plans for how they use their boat have also changed. Originally they had wanted to use their boat in West Palm for weekend getaways. 

“We quickly threw Plan ‘A’ away when we did the passage and now here we are about to sail to Chesapeake Bay,” says John. 

“We’re so proud to be the owners of Sayonara,” says Noelia, adding that while they had to make a quick decision to make the purchase, this was by no means an impulsive one, deliberating over every detail, and giving everything careful consideration. 

Their long-term plans are to sail up the Eastern Seaboard in the summers – maybe even sail to the Mediterranean sometime in the future. For now, they will keep s/v Sayonara in their home port in Palm Beach.

So, back to the first question, what do you pack for a 9-day offshore passage? Bathing suits, yes – and maybe a few dozen boat shoes.

I see a bunch of locally that are moored in a drying bay. Mud though. But I still can’t imagine wanting my boat to bounce on a bottom 4 times per day, especially if the bay has considerable fetch from a nasty storm direction like the local one does. Good luck with it. Do remember that not all fixed keel are designed to rest on their keels. And if they can, are they stable fore and aft - the boat won’t tip onto its nose or stern?
