Chartering a yacht affords a family or group of friends privacy that is almost completely absent on a cruise ship.

On a yacht, the only guests are the people known to each other. The only other individuals on board are the professional, discreet crew.

• Due to their size, a cruise ship can accommodate large groups of people in a single party. This makes a cruise ship an ideal vessel for weddings and reunions
• Cruise ship options are almost endless. The size, duration of the voyage, the theme of the boat, and special cruise packages are just a few categories for cruises
• Depending on location and other factors, a cruise ship made be a better deal
• No freedom for guests. Schedules, time limits, and activities based on availability are the norm
• Cruises are often crowded, with guests numbering in the thousands
• Extra fees can be tacked onto activities and special requests
• Crew is greatly outnumbered by guests creating a lack of consistent, quality service

• Your time is your own. You set the pace, course, schedule, and activities
• Menus are based on your tastes. Food that is unpopular among the passengers won’t be on board
• Crew to guest ratio is normally one on one, making the service more intimate and immediate
• Price can be high depending on the luxuriousness of the yacht chartered. The fancier the charter, the steeper the price
• Limited vessels for charter can mean that a specific boat from a specific company can be already chartered for the time you would like to have that particular vessel
• Space for guests can be an issue for large parties. The more people on board, the less room there is.

What is a yacht cruise how is it different from ocean cruises.

Understanding the difference between a yacht cruise and a typical ocean cruise.

Roughly 20 years ago, Carol and I had a bad experience on what was billed as a luxury cruise ship and we vowed to never cruise again.  However, the cruise industry has made significant strides in the last two decades and we’ve completely changed our minds on that stance as we’ve sampled quite a few of the modern cruise offerings.

While the quality of a cruise experience has dramatically changed for the better over the years, in our view, another great benefit offered by the cruise industry is the great variety of cruise experiences that are currently available.

There are massive cruise liners available for those who are more budget minded, there are cruise lines that specifically target the luxury traveler, there are expedition cruise lines that offer travelers destinations like Antarctica and the Galapagos Islands; and there now also exists quite a number of cruise lines that feature much smaller mega-yachts.

Carol and I just finished a wonderful sailing on Windstar Cruises MSY Windsurf, which they bill as the world’s largest motor sailing yacht. I’ll be featuring a number of articles on our website over the coming weeks where I’ll share our experience sailing on the Windsurf, but I thought it might be helpful for our readers and clients to understand the difference between a yacht cruise and a more typical ocean cruise line.

Distinctions of a Yacht Cruise

• Yacht cruises tend to be more destination focused , and because of their smaller size, they are able to reach smaller ports that the larger cruise ships could never approach.  I shot the very top photograph at the main port on the island of St. Martin.  Besides the Windsurf, and the monster-ship docked next to us, there were also three other very large cruise ships in port.  It was a madhouse.  As an example of small ports with our much smaller sailing yacht, we were able to moor off a beautiful beach in Barbuda, hop aboard our tender to a small dock, and the locals whisked us away in small boats to a fabulous bird sanctuary to witness a massive colony of frigatebirds. That’s one of my photographs above.  Pretty cool.  Right? Our yacht was the only ship in sight. Most of the other Caribbean cruisers were off fighting crowds in Antigua.

• Generally speaking, with just a few exceptions, you won’t find stateroom balconies on a commercial yacht.  Depending on the size of your stateroom, you’re going to find two or more portholes configured and designed to give you what appears to be a large picture window in your stateroom. This gave me a little concern before our sailing.  However, we found such wonderful spaces aboard ship, we found that we primarily used our stateroom for sleeping and enjoyed the many nooks and crannies on the ship to relax, read a book, or catch a little sun.  Frankly, we didn’t miss having a balcony at all.
• For us, we found that our sailing yacht offered us a far more romantic and idyllic setting.  Because the ship is much smaller, it didn’t dominate the setting and allowed us to feel more immersed in our destinations.  We really enjoyed that.
• While yacht cruises certainly offer sailings in the open seas, you’re going to find that yacht cruising is generally done at night as you’re moving from one destination to another.  For example, most cruise lines sailing in the West Indies are leaving from Florida and that means 3-4 days at sea just to get to the islands and back. In our case, we flew into St. Martin, enjoyed a sunset sailing every night, and awoke to a different island each day.  We were 9-nights on the ship and we visited 9 different islands.  For us, we’d rather spend less time in the open seas and more time exploring different destinations.

Boat vs. Ship vs Yacht: What’s the Difference?

Language is a tricky thing, and picking out the differences between similar terms can be confusing. This is especially true when some of the definitions overlap. This is the case with the case of boat vs. ship vs. yacht . What’s the difference? We know in our gut that there are differences between these three seafaring vessels, but unless you’re a harbor master do you really know what counts as what?

Let’s get into some definitions, and we’re going to start with the easiest to explain: What is a yacht? What is a ship? And what is a boat?

Yacht vs. Ship vs. Boat

What is a yacht.

A yacht, I think everyone would agree, is fancier than a ship or a boat. “Yacht” infers some amount of luxury , and definitely recreation. There’s also something to be said about size. A yacht tends to be anywhere between 35 feet up to 160 feet. And some yachts, known as superyachts, go even beyond that. (Jeff Bezos just built a 417 foot yacht, but that’s really breaking yacht records.)

Because of the size, yachts tend to operate in larger bodies of water–generally the ocean. Yachts are able to handle rougher ocean waves, and they are also equipped with more advanced navigation and guidance instruments than smaller boats. Likewise, a yacht tends to have a full crew to help with the navigation, engineering, repairs, as well as having stewards that serve the yacht’s guests. This can be anywhere from a crew of four or five up to a crew of a few dozen on large yachts. 

One interesting thing to note is that outside of the United States, a yacht refers to a sailboat , and a motorized yacht is called a “motor yacht”. 

So, is a yacht a boat? Yes, technically a yacht is a boat. But a yacht is a very specific kind of boat.

What is a Ship?

The term ship is most commonly associated with a very large boat, and something that is not as fancy as a yacht (one exception is that cruise ships can still be very fancy, but are referred to as ships because of their size and power.)

Ships are generally so large that they would never be found in a lake, with some exceptions for the Great Lakes, and are made for navigating the high seas of the open ocean. An ship can refer to a cruise ship, a naval ship, a tanker, a container ship, and many other commercial vessels.

Ships tend to have advanced navigation and technology, but much more advanced than that of a yacht due to the size, the speed, and the routes that a ship will take. They are meant to be traversing the open ocean for very long periods of time, from one continent to the next, while a yacht may only rarely set across the ocean and most often stays somewhat near land. 

A ship will also have a much larger crew than a yacht or a boat. Ships are typically so large that they need not only one trained navigator but a set of navigators, plus an entire engineering team, and includes many more positions. 

Finally, a ship is meant to carry things. This may be passengers, yes (in reference to cruise ships and some navy ships) but most ships are for carrying cargo–or even carrying equipment to do work on other ships including repair work or refueling. 

What is a Boat?

Well, a boat is harder to define, because a yacht is technically a boat, and a ship is technically a boat. But when people refer to boats, they are almost always referring to something smaller than either a yacht or a ship. Boats may be motorized, like a speed boat, or they may sail, or they may be man-powered, like a rowboat or a kayak. Really, anything up to and including a liferaft, can be called a boat.

(As a side note that will just muddy the waters even further, submarine captains are adamant that their subs are boats. They are not ships.)

So, Boat vs. Ship Vs. Yacht?

Ultimately it comes down to this: all three of them are boats, but yachts are fancier, larger, and used for recreation, and ships are even larger, used commercially or by the navy, and are meant to cross oceans. The dividing line is sometimes thin, but generally speaking, when it comes to boats vs. ships.vs. yachts you can go by the adage “ I know it when I see it .”

When Is a Ship a Yacht, and When Is It Not?

The difference between the two broad categories is determined by one key factor..

Yachts have been in the news a lot more frequently in recent years. There have been stories like when a Dutch yacht builder requested to temporarily dismantle an iconic bridge in Rotterdam to get a 417-foot-long sailing yacht commissioned by Jeff Bezos out to sea, or when authorities around the world seized the yachts of Russian oligarchs in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Usually, the most notable yachts have the prefixes super-, mega- and even giga- attached to convey their truly enormous sizes relative to most other privately-owned vessels.

As a result, ‘yacht’ as a term has basically become meaningless just by the sheer proliferation of private ships in recent years that defy all potential superlatives. It’s like when you say a word so often that it loses all its meaning. Why are there so many more huge luxury maritime vessels in the world? Rising levels of global wealth inequality? Technical innovation? I don’t know. The Pangeos is the latest planned monument to ostentatious wealth. The 1970-foot-long turtle-shaped ship is the brainchild of Italian designer Pierpaolo Lazzarini. However, this self-declared terayacht is not a yacht by definition.

Besides ship and yacht, boat is another commonly used term. The definition of a boat is much more vague and open to interpretation. Boats tend to be small personal craft and only carry a few people. Though, it’s common for sailors to refer to vessels of any size or purpose as a boat.

5 HUGE Differences Between a Ferry and a Cruise Ship (Real Examples)

If you are considering a cruise, you may be wondering if the ship will be similar to a ferry.

I’ve been on many cruises and have also taken trips on ferries. In this article, we will look at the differences between the two.

Many people wrongly assume that by taking a ferry trip, they’ll know what to expect from a cruise ship. This couldn’t be further from the truth in my experience!

What Is The Difference Between a Ferry and a Cruise Ship?

Ferries are small ships designed to transport people and cargo from one destination to the other.

Cruise ships are usually much larger than ferries, and they usually only transport passengers. Cruise ships are designed with leisure in mind and have many more onboard amenities than ferries.

Ferries usually only make short journeys, whereas cruise ships sail for weeks at a time. The purpose, ship design, onboard activities, and onboard experience all vary greatly.

Below are examples of a small ferry, a large ferry, a mid-sized cruise ship, and a large cruise ship.

#1 A Cruise Ship and a Ferry Have a Different Purpose

What is the purpose of a ferry.

The primary purpose of a ferry is to transport guests from A to B.

Ferries are primarily a mode of transport, and they often carry cargo, and some carry cars.

Ferries often provide a cheap alternative to other transportation methods, such as flying, and, as a result, are very popular in some places.

The Silja Symphony is a ferry that sails in the Baltic Sea. I took a sailing on her that ran between Stockholm, Sweden and Helsinki in Finland. It was incredibly cheap and a great way to travel.

Ferry Examples:

One of the most popular ferry routes is the Staten Island Ferry in New York.

I have taken the journey on the Staten Island Ferry, and although it is very functional and provides great scenery, it’s far from a leisure activity.

The ferry carries 75,000 people PER DAY between Lower Manhattan and Staten Island.

Another very popular ferry route is the Star Ferry in Hong Kong.

I enjoyed this ferry trip more than the Staten Island ferry because we were able to sit outside with fresh air, but even still, it was very much a no-thrills ride.

What Is The Purpose Of A Cruise Ship?

The primary purpose of a cruise ship is to be a floating resort for the passengers onboard.

Cruise ships are full of cabins, restaurants, bars, entertainment venues, and swimming pools.

For many people, Me included, the idea of going on a cruise is as much about the ship as it is about the destinations visited.

Cruise Ship Examples:

The most popular cruise destination is the Caribbean. Guests from all over the world head to the Caribbean year-round to take a Caribbean cruise.

Most Caribbean cruises are upwards of 5 or so nights long and are generally pretty relaxed and fun.

Another very popular cruise destination is the Mediterranean. Mediterranean cruises sail year-round, and they are particularly popular as they can visit a number of countries within a week or so.

I’ve taken many Mediterranean cruises and usually visit around 5 countries in 7 nights.

To do a similar trip on land would be incredibly difficult, and expensive!

An example of a cruise I took in the Mediterranean where I was tempted never to get off the ship was a trip I took on Symphony of the Seas. There was so much to do onboard, there was no way I could see and do everything in a week.

What Is The Difference in Purpose?

Guests board cruise ships to enjoy the amenities of the cruise ship, whereas guests board ferries to get from A to B.

You can also transport things like cars and cargo on ferries, which cruise ships are not designed to do.

#2 Size & Ship Design

Generally speaking, ferries are much smaller than cruise ships and you’ll often find that they have a different design.

The design of the ferry varies dramatically. Some will be flat and low to the river/ocean, and others will look more similar to ocean cruise ships.

The Staten Island ferries are around 3000 gross tons. The largest cruise ship, Icon or the Seas, is over eight times as big at a gross tonnage of 248,663

Despite the difference in size, you’ll often find a similar amount of passengers onboard.

On cruise ships, guests have much more space per person as they need a cabin and places to eat and relax.

On ferries, guests are often just sat together and don’t need much room.

Ferries also don’t need anywhere near as many crew members onboard as cruise ships do.

A typical ratio on a cruise ship is one crew member to every three passengers. On the Staten Island Ferry, you’ll find 3000 guests with only fifteen crew members. That’s one crew member for every 200 passengers.

#3 Onboard Activities

What is there to do on a ferry.

On a ferry, your options are very limited. In most cases, for a short journey, you will just be sat down.

You may be able to look at the view, or if you’re in the middle – as I was on the Staten Island ferry – you may not be able to see anything!

On some larger ferries, you’ll find restaurants and bars. I’ve personally never felt the need to eat on a short ferry ride as I get too seasick.

Lots of ferries do provide free WiFi to pass the time but as most journeys are short there doesn’t need to be any entertainment onboard.

Taking a ferry is similar to taking a ride on a train but with a few added things on occasion, like video arcades or games rooms.

What Is There To Do On A Cruise Ship?

Cruise ships are filled with restaurants, bars, theatres, swimming pools, casinos, lounges, and much much more.

Onboard amenities do, of course, depend on the cruise line and ship, but almost all ships will have multiple bars, restaurants and entertainment venues.

On a cruise, you’ll find a daily schedule that is full of activities. On more lively, family-focused cruise lines, you’ll find things like Ropes Courses, Surf Simulators, and Zip Lines.

It’s often easier to think of a cruise ship as being a floating resort or city at sea. You’ll find everything that you would find in a small city on land – like shops, gyms, hairdressers and spas!

What Is The Difference In Onboard Activities?

There is a lot more to do on a cruise ship than on a ferry.

Entertainment is provided and there are numerous choices for how to spend a day on board.

Ferries are more functional than cruise ships, and although they may provide some bars and restaurants, the experience and quality are usually very limited.

#4 Movement

How much movement do you feel on a ferry.

If you are prone to travel sickness, you are much more likely to feel seasick on a ferry than on a cruise ship.

It’s common for people who don’t even suffer with seasickness to feel unwell on ferries, especially if eating or drinking too much!

I almost always take seasickness pills when taking a trip on a ferry. The exception to this would be where I am able to sit on the top deck and get some fresh air, this usually helps but I still wouldn’t want to do it for a prolonged period of time.

You’ll often feel vibrations and bumps and judders when taking a trip on a ferry.

Ferries are simply not designed for pleasure cruises; they are designed with a purpose in mind, and passenger comfort tends to come secondary to speed and efficiency.

What Movement Do You Feel on a Cruise Ship?

I am an incredibly seasick person. I get seasick on almost everything, but interestingly enough, I very rarely get seasick on cruise ships.

Due to the size, design, and stabilisers of the cruise ship, the movement that you’ll feel onboard is usually very small.

There are, of course, occasions where a ship may be caught in bad weather where the movement felt increases, but even still, this is very rare and doesn’t put me off of cruising.

#5 What’s Included In Your Fare?

The majority of ferry trips only last for a few minutes or a few hours. Cruises usually last for multiple days and can last weeks, even months!

This not only impacts the experience but also how much it’ll cost.

Realistically, for a cruise, you’re looking at at least $100 per night, but this includes your accommodation, meals, entertainment, and transport between destinations.

A ferry, on the other hand, is much cheaper, with a trip sometimes costing nothing at all. (the Staten Island ferry in New York is free.)

As a result, your fare only includes transportation from place to place. Any food bought onboard is at an extra cost.

Large Ferries

Some ferries are as large as small cruise ships and look very similar. These are definitely exceptions to the rule, but I think it’s interesting to see these ships.

Some ferries which look very similar to cruise ship are those from the Silja line. On board Silja ships, you’ll find restaurants, bars, shops, and even entertainment.

The cruises taken onboard are longer than you’d find on your average ferry, and as a result, the ship has cabins and is well-equipped for longer journeys.

Another ferry that is more similar to a cruise ship is the Havila Polaris – and her sister ships.

I took a winter trip down the coast of Norway on this state-of-the-art Norwegian ferry. It was silent – and battery powered! It had great food and drink and comfortable cabins onboard.

People could get on and off at every stop, and the ship went to small towns and ports along the coast that cruise ships don’t dock at.

Ferries are usually basic ships with no added thrills onboard. Cruise ships, on the other hand, are destinations in themselves.

What’s the Difference Between a Yacht and a Cruise Ship?

Yachts and cruise ships are two different types of vessels that have been used for centuries to travel the sea. Both are great ways to explore the world, but there are some key differences between them.

Size – One of the main differences between a yacht and a cruise ship is the size. A yacht is typically much smaller than a cruise ship, with most yachts ranging from 30-150 feet in length.

Cruise ships, on the other hand, can be much larger with sizes ranging from 200-1,000 feet or more. This size difference also affects their capacity; yachts generally carry fewer passengers while cruise ships can accommodate thousands of people at a time.

Design – Yachts and cruise ships also differ in design and layout. Yachts tend to be designed for luxury and comfort, often with multiple decks, spacious bedrooms and luxurious amenities like hot tubs and Jacuzzis. Cruise ships are typically more utilitarian in design, with limited private rooms but plenty of shared public spaces like restaurants, bars and entertainment venues.

Speed & Maneuverability – Another area where yachts differ from cruise ships is in speed and maneuverability. Yachts tend to be faster and more agile due to their smaller size, allowing them to navigate tight spaces or reach remote destinations quickly. Cruise ships are slower but still provide an enjoyable journey due to their larger size and abundance of amenities onboard.

Cost & Availability – The cost of cruising on a yacht or a cruise ship also differs greatly; yachts can be quite expensive as they require a captain and crew as well as fuel costs while cruises can be much more affordable depending on the destination and length of voyage. Additionally, yachts tend to have limited availability due to their smaller size while cruise ships offer more frequent departures throughout the year.

A Utah man spent $1 million renovating a cruise ship he bought off Craigslist – only for it to sink.

In an interview with CNN Travel , technology entrepreneur Chris Willson admitted that he and his partner Jin Li spent 15 years renovating a 293-foot vessel called the Aurora after purchasing it off Craigslist in 2008. From a swimming pool to an indoor theater, the ship boasted many amenities and tons of space for guests, with 85 cabins.

After learning more about its history, like how it was originally named Wappen von Hamburg, built in Germany after World War II as well as being featured in the 1963 James Bond film From Russia with Love, Willson fell in love with the idea of restoring the boat to its former glory.

Willson was able to “work out a really good deal” for the boat, and set about his passion project, first docking it for a year in Rio Vista, California, then in San Francisco’s Pier 38 for three years, and was docked for a year at Herman & Helen’s Marina by Stockton, Calif. However, he ended up selling the boat in 2023 after locals took issue with the ship.

But by then, he had gotten significant renovations done to the ship, with his ultimate goal being to transform it into a museum. Over those 15 years spent renovating, he garnered over 12,000 followers on the Aurora Restoration Project’s Facebook page as well as 80,000 subscribers to the project’s YouTube channel . Well-wishers commended him on restoring the ship, with some even traveling from far and wide to visit the project in California.

“I’d gotten quite a ways. I think we had 10 areas solidly restored and refurnished meticulously,” he recalled. “These were kind of major areas. So we were pretty proud of that. So we were doing a pretty good job. We had marine engineers involved.”

Although the identity of the Aurora’s latest owner hasn’t been revealed, the US Coast Guard announced that the ship had begun to “sink in 13 feet of water and discharge pollution.”

“Extensive surveys suggest that no recoverable oil remains onboard. There were no observations of oiled wildlife throughout the response,” the U.S. Coast Guard’s press release added, noting that the City of Stockton had “hired contractors to maintain pumps within the vessel to address potential water ingress and monitor the vessel.”

According to the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office in a post on X , officials have determined that “the ship has suffered a hole and is taking on water and is currently leaking diesel fuel and oil into the Delta Waterway.”

The following month, Unified Command hired contractors to refloat the Aurora and remove “an estimated 21,675 gallons of oily water, 3,193 gallons of hazardous waste, and five 25-yard bins of debris.”

Since then, there’s been an ongoing dispute over the ownership of the cruise, with the city of Stockton officials claiming it had “no clear ownership.”

However, in a recent post on the Facebook group page dedicated to Aurora’s restoration project, Willson told his followers the “new owner has consistently reached out to every pertinent agency, fervently proclaiming his ownership status, and has provided unequivocal legal documentation confirming his ownership.”

Willson and Li are now searching for a new passion project, preferably for something on land, but they will always have a soft spot for the Aurora.

“It was such a well-known vessel,” Willson said. “And it had everybody’s hearts.”

In February 2025, Windstar Cruises is launching Dreams of Tahiti, its inaugural plant-based cruise to French Polynesia. The voyage will take place on Star Breeze, a newly renovated all-suite motor yacht with room for 312 guests, meaning it’s small enough to fit into the tiny island ports of Polynesian destinations like Raiatea and Motu Mahaea, but big enough for a spa, pool, and some seriously impressive dining venues—all of which serve delicious, totally plant-based food crafted by globally renowned chefs (fun fact: Windstar is the official cruise line of the James Beard Foundation).

If you want to get a spot, you’ll have to move fast, because the voyage is almost sold out. According to Jessica Chiang, Windstar’s director of marketing, the all-vegan sailing trip was launched in response to rising demand from passengers.

It’s true that plant-based diets are growing in popularity in the US. One study published earlier this year in the journal Nutrients noted that from 2012 to 2022, the percentage of Americans following a plant-forward diet more than doubled from 12 percent to 26 percent. Documentaries that demonstrate the health benefits of a plant-based lifestyle—such as  Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones and You Are What You Eat: A Twin Experiment— have also been popular with Netflix viewers in recent years. 

This demand has spilled over into the cruising industry, which is more popular than ever ( research suggests that by the end of this year, 36 million passengers will have taken to the high seas on a cruise ship). In 2023, Carnival Cruises announced it launched a brand-new vegan menu on all of its ships. And in the same year, Princess Cruises and Virgin Atlantic launched new plant-based options aboard their cruise liners as well.

That means that if you’re heading off on a cruise during the height of the season, you’ll be tussling for a good seat on deck, lining up to get off the ship to see all of the wonders at your port destination, and battling for the last few vegan options at the buffet.

Research shows that intimate vessels like those from Windstar Cruises have a significantly smaller environmental impact than larger cruise ships. According to Marine Insight , a 3,000-capacity cruise ship can generate around 150,000 gallons of sewage and graywater—that’s enough to fill 10 swimming pools. Carnival, which operates several cruise brands with large ships including Carnival Cruise Line and Princess Cruises, generates around 1.3 pounds of food waste per person per day on average. Windstar, on the other hand, operates with around 10 percent of the passengers of large vessels.

Even if you miss out on the dreamy plant-based voyage to Tahiti, there are plenty of other vegan-friendly voyages with Windstar to choose from. A few examples of some of the vegan options you can expect to be treated to include citrus pumpkin risotto, vegetable enchiladas, and eggplant cannelloni, and on Star Class ships like Star Pride and Star Breeze, there is also plant-based Korean bulgogi. 

For breakfast, you can choose from options like fresh fruit smoothies, oatmeal, and muffins, all of which you can order straight to your room for maximum comfort (date pancakes are also available on special request). If you’re craving something sweet, expect to come across options like mango lime tart, chia seed truffles served with coconut sauce, and tahini brownies with fresh strawberries for dessert.

If you’re traveling with a group, it’s important to note that vegan options aren’t just for those who eat a plant-based diet. Chiang notes that many guests who are simply trying to eat healthier options have tried them and been suitably impressed. 

“So far the feedback on our plant-based options has been positive. There are quite a few guests who are interested in trying to eat healthier, but often have a misconception that healthy foods are not flavorful or tasty,” she explained. “Our guest feedback is very important to us, as it helps us improve and innovate our menus.”

Ukraine Wants Long-Range Weapons. Here’s a Look at What They Are.

Much of the public discourse about arming Ukraine has revolved around whether the United States will send “long range” weapons. But that can mean different things.

There are roughly 500 miles between Kyiv and Moscow.

The United States has weapons that can fly much farther than that, but it is unlikely to supply them to Ukraine for fear that an attack on the Russian capital with American weapons might spark a third world war.

So within that 500-mile range the Biden administration has been pushed repeatedly to give Kyiv weapons that can hit targets as far away as possible. Discussion among Ukraine’s supporters often centers on calls for “long range” weapons — a term with no real military definition, but that has an emotional pull Ukrainian leaders have used to pressure the White House for ever more capable munitions.

Over two and half years of war, “long range” has evolved in the public forum to describe a host of increasingly advanced U.S. weapons. The trend began soon after Russia’s 2022 invasion, when U.S. government officials first used the term to apply to …

The United States has sent Ukraine the longest-range artillery pieces in its arsenal: 155-millimeter howitzers , which can fire 100-pound shells at targets about 20 miles away. Each shell contains about 24 pounds of explosives.

Since the beginning of the war, the United States has shipped three million M795 artillery shells to Ukraine for the weapon to fire. That model can be fitted with a guidance kit that steers the projectile to its target, though there is no evidence to suggest the Pentagon has sent those devices to Kyiv.

Ukrainian soldiers tend to fire far more shells than U.S. troops do, wearing out the barrels of the weapons comparatively quickly . Replacing them requires specialized equipment and cannot easily be done in the field by the soldiers who use them.

Artillery Rockets

These weapons fly more than twice as far as the shells fired by 155-millimeter howitzers. The American High Mobility Artillery Rocket System , or HIMARS, is a five-ton truck that typically carries six rockets on its back called GMLRS, for Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System , that can launch a 200-pound explosive warhead about 52 miles .

On June 1, 2022, the Pentagon announced that it was sending four HIMARS trucks to Ukraine. Weeks later, Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III referred to them as part of Ukraine’s “long-range fires.”

Since then, the U.S. military has sent more than 40 such trucks, and thousands of GMLRS (pronounced “Gimmlers”) to Ukraine. (The United States has also given the country money to buy even more of those rockets directly from the manufacturer.)

The HIMARS can also fire another type of munition.

That brings us to the world of …

Short-Range Ballistic Missiles

Since early in the war, President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine has pleaded for weapons that can hit even deeper into Russian-held territory, and eventually into Russia itself.

One American example of this kind is the ATACMS, pronounced “attack ’ems,” for Army Tactical Missile System . The State Department described them as “long range” when it announced in April that the missiles had been shipped to Ukraine.

They can hit targets roughly 190 miles away and contain about 375 pounds of explosives.

Ballistic missiles fly much higher into the atmosphere than artillery rockets and many times farther, coming back to the ground at incredibly high speed because of gravity’s pull.

Generally, this class of ballistic missiles can fly to targets 43 to 620 miles away.

The United States does not currently field any weapons in the next two categories, which are …

Medium- and Intermediate-Range Ballistic Missiles

The United States developed medium- and intermediate-range ballistic missiles during the Cold War, but it largely got rid of them decades ago.

That was partly because of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty , or I.N.F., that the United States and the Soviet Union signed in 1987. The treaty banned land-based ballistic missiles with ranges of about 310 to 3,400 miles.

But the treaty died in 2019 after the White House accused Russia of fielding weapons that violated its terms.

The I.N.F. tried to ban particularly worrisome and potentially nuclear-armed weapons that could threaten Moscow from NATO territory and were hard for the Soviets to shoot down.

Cruise Missiles

The best-known example is the Tomahawk, developed in the 1970s for the U.S. Navy. The Air Force adopted an air-launched version, and the Army had a ground-launched version until it was made illegal under the I.N.F. Treaty.

While there are different versions of the Tomahawk, they can generally reach targets about 1,000 miles away while carrying a conventional warhead with the explosive power of about 400 pounds of TNT, or a small thermonuclear device tens of thousands of times more powerful.

Unlike high-flying ballistic missiles, cruise missiles like the Tomahawk have small wings that allow them to fly horizontally low to the ground and use small jet engines to reach distances more than five times farther than ATACMS.

As of yet, there has been no public discussion of providing Tomahawks to Ukraine, but the Pentagon has a smaller and more stealthy air-launched cruise missile under consideration.

It is called JASSM, pronounced “jazz ’em,” for Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile. The most basic version carries the equivalent of 240 pounds of TNT to a range of about 230 miles. More advanced versions can fly more than 1,000 miles.

Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles

ICBMs carry nuclear warheads and can be launched from underground silos or from submarines underwater . They can fly about 8,000 miles to hit targets on the other side of the planet.

Their explosive power can be measured in the hundreds of thousands of tons of TNT.

They are not in the cards for Ukraine, since their use against Russia would almost certainly provoke a global nuclear war.

Hypersonic Weapons

Currently in development by the United States, Russia and China, these are weapons that fly faster than five times the speed of sound and can maneuver sharply to evade an enemy’s defenses.

Some short-range ballistic missiles might meet that definition in the final portion of their flight, but the current buzz over hypersonics is related to a new generation of weapons that quickly achieve those speeds and hold them while flying on the edge of space to cross oceans or continents.

The Pentagon is pursuing two types of hypersonic weapons meant to fly several hundred to a couple of thousand miles.

Unlike most other missiles that carry explosives, their warhead is a solid piece of tungsten — a metal roughly 70 percent denser than lead — that destroys its target through kinetic energy released as it slams into the target at more than 3,000 feet per second.

But the United States has none to give to Ukraine. Even after spending billions on their development, the Pentagon has yet to field a working prototype.
