Portofino & Ligurian Coast Yacht Charter
For decades, luxury yacht charter groups to the Ligurian Coast - also known as the Italian Riviera - have adored the tiny and beautiful port of Portofino in Italy. As a commune of Genoa that has welcomed aristocrats, artists and celebrities over the centuries, Portofino provides a taste of the finer things in life, evolving with the times from a small fishing village on the rugged east coast and embracing its popularity while preserving its myriad charms.
Colourful buildings and quaint cobblestone streets meander away from the port that attracts sailing yachts and motor yachts alike. Cafes, boutique shops and gelatarias spill out into the harbour piazza from where you can watch the superyachts come and go, or take in the breath-taking views from on top of the hill.
The surrounding region is also a delight to culture-seekers, wine tasters, water sports fans and those looking to do nothing more than take life at their leisure and make the most of the services on board: The Cinque-Terre villages are carefully preserved UNESCO World Heritage Sites best accessed by water. Sperm whales and dolphins are regular visitors to the area that will be a magical encounter during any swim.
In Genoa, immerse yourself in the 16th Century palaces and residences of Via Garibaldi and at Forte dei Marmi guests can spoil themselves with lavish spas, Michelin-starred restaurants, high-end shops and a spectacular beach that stretches for miles.
5 quick reasons to visit Portofino & the Ligurian Coast:
Sensational UNESCO World Heritage Sites, fantastic snorkel and dive sites, delicious cuisine and wine tasting tours, golden sand beaches, incredible shopping
Portofino & the Ligurian Coast Yacht Charter Experiences
The Ligurian coastline is scenic and spectacular, combining colourful buildings with historic alleyways spilling over with vivid bougainvillea. At night, lantern-style electric lights create a romantic ambiance that makes the country of passion the perfect place to propose, have a honeymoon or celebrate an anniversary.
Sanremo or Genoa is the perfect place to begin, end or extend your luxury yacht charter due to its proximity to the French Riviera yacht charter grounds - another fantastic region to explore. In addition to Via Garibaldi, there are numerous theatres and residences to visit around Piazza Raffaele de Ferrari, including the Doge's Palace and Christopher Columbus's house.
Follow the curve of the coast to the empty beaches of Punta Chiappa on the cape, then on to Cala dell'Oro and most importantly the Portofino Marine reserve where the Christ of the Abyss statue is located: Snorkellers will be able to see the statue through the clear water, whereas Scuba divers can get up close and descend the 40m/131ft to see the marine life swimming around its base. On dry land there is also the historic abbey and museum Abbazia di San Fruttuoso, which discusses the lives of the prisoners held there and the graffiti that they left behind.
Further down the Italian coast you'll sail upon 'Cinque Terre' - A succession of five coastal villages, all with the same spectacular views of the seas. These villages are less expensive and less sophisticated than their more popular sister, Portofino, yet they are a spectacular sight from your luxury yacht and each has its own unique charms to accompany its clean and clear beaches. Hikers looking to spend extra time on land can take the famous and stunning walk along this coastal route that links the five towns.
From Cinque Terre, guests can choose whether to indulge in some contemporary delights in Forte dei Marmi and Livorno with its top quality restaurants, beach clubs and bars, or immerse yourselves further in nature at Porto Venere and Palmaria. Caparia and Elba are both situated within the Tuscany National Park and are perfect for water sports above and below the water: Octopus, starfish and a massive variety of fish can be found around the vivid sea corals, walls and caves. Further south is Civitavecchia, the gateway to Rome and her splendid architectural and historical gems.
The types of yacht charter available in Portofino & Cinque Terre Italy include all the main types such as large crewed motor yachts, sailing yachts, catamaran, sailboats, luxury yachts and off-course the ever increasing super yacht charter. Like most of the Mediterranean, the Italian yacht chartering season generally runs from April to the end of October. Just like the favourite hideaways of the rich and famous, Portofino and the Italian Riveria is enjoying ever increasing popularity and success as a destination for Western Mediterranean luxury yacht charters.

The charter was an amazing experience. The highlight of our trip for all 11 of us. We really enjoyed the crew immensely. The food was outstanding (the chef is Mexican as are we). The itinerary was fantastic. We thoroughly enjoyed each place we stopped. There was only one significant problem. We didn't have enough time!!! So as you can see, we are charterers now. We will always relish the moments on Andiamo in every way. F.O from USA chartered M/Y ANDIAMO in, Portofino, Bonifaccio, Porto Cervo, Corsica , France in August

pORTOFINO – Top Yacht Charter Destination
From Monterosso al Mare in the Cinque Terra region, you will sail north to reach Portofino. The roll call of famous people who have visited Portofino over the past two centuries attest to its seductive charms. It includes Guy de Montpassant, the famous 19th-century French author, as well as German philosopher Nietzsche. Movie stars dazzled by its beauty and who often visited for its seclusion included Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Grace Kelly and Humphrey Bogart. Today you can spot the likes of musicians Rod Stewart, Beyoncé, Jay Z, Avril Levigne and Chad Kroeger, and actor George Clooney.
Portofino seems to encapsulate that elusive quality of authentic glamour and elegance that is so fascinating and appealing. It oozes understated chic: think upmarket party venues, live bands, luxurious boutiques, and the best of traditional and gourmet restaurants.
PORTOFINO – The Gourmet Experience
Taste mouth-wateringly fresh anchovies, pesto made of just-picked pine nuts, locally grown veal, fresh local herbs — the food offering in Portofino is out of this world. But before you tuck in, why not try a famed Bellini cocktail (a mixture of Prosecco sparkling wine and peach purée) on the terrace of the Hotel Splendido while delighting in the views of Portofino from above. It’s an absolute must when white peaches are in season.
Ristorante Stella, the waterfront establishment serving some of the freshest seafood you will ever taste, is famous for its fish ravioli and plump mussels. For the non-fish eaters, there are plenty of other delectable dishes, made with homegrown produce, to sample. Their wines, desserts, service and ambience are truly world-class.
Da u Batti, which is slightly off the beaten track, is the place to escape for some peace and quiet when the waterfront becomes congested in high season. Their Scampi a la Portofino with langoustines and giant prawns in their secret signature sauce are major drawcards.
If you share the belief that the best restaurants to visit in a tourist hotspot are the ones frequented by locals, then Da u Batti is the place to go. You’ll see a lot of Italians here, though it’s unlikely you’ll be the only tourist in the restaurant. Da u Batti does have something of a cult following.
The list of favourite Portofino restaurants would be incomplete without Tripoli: think sea view, pesto lasagna, fish skewers, pine nuts and anchovies… It’s a real feast for the eyes and the palate.
PORTOFINO – Things to Do
But Portofino is not just a catalogue of stunning views and foodie delights. Open-air picnics, natural wonders, bird watching and hiking are just a few of its other attractions. Did you know, for example, that it is located in the middle of a protected area, with abundant wildlife and lush vegetation?
Portofino is a natural masterpiece. The mountains are spectacular, the air is clear and invigorating, the water is aquamarine, and the bougainvillea blooms are vibrant pink and purple… It truly is a slice of paradise.
It offers rather unique attractions, too, such as the submerged statue of Christ, found 15m below the sea level. Christ of the Abyss is one of the major diving attractions in the area, as are its shipwrecks, fish and unique red corals. Scuba diving off Portofino not only leaves you awe-inspired but will overwhelm your senses.

Sitting on its own little peninsula, this picturesque fishing village hides a deeply luxurious heart beneath the quaintness of its small harbour and mellowing houses. The beauty of Portofino is only amplified when arriving by the sea, allowing an enviable view of the brightly coloured houses huddled around the harbour.
Lifestyle Acting as a haven for inspired writers, the exclusive seaside town has attracted the likes of Guy de Maupassant and Truman Capote over its attractive history. Portofino has embraced the modern-day exclusivities of designer boutiques and gourmet cafes without sacrificing any of its 1950s charm that made it so popular with the rich and famous of the past. Gently washed by the waters of the harbour, Portofino’s small centre revolves around an uncomplicated piazza, boasting designer names like Louis Vuitton, Dolce and Gabbana, Pucci, Gucci and Missoni.
Famous Residents Reinforcing its reputation as an opulent hideaway, Giorgio Armani, Dolce and Gabbana, the chairman of Pirelli tyres and the owner of the Genoa football club keep villas in Portofino. Peace and relaxation are the desires of visitors here, where no loud noise is allowed after 10pm and bomb-proof security is well in force. The most adventure you will encounter in Portofino is that you can find on any one of the coast’s exhilarating walks.
Walking A hikers dream, Portofino offers an endless array of scenic walking paths, allowing those lucky enough to cross them to explore hidden hilltop villages and catch an unforgettable view of the coast’s sandy-white cliffs. Perhaps the most scenic and rewarding is hiking amongst the cliffs of the UNESCO-protected Cinque Terre villages. A delightfully quaint maze of tiny gardens, windswept views and shady seaside resting spots.
Mooring Portofino is a tender port, and tenders arrive at the yacht moorage in the centre of town. For those with yachts bordering on the larger scale however, anchoring off the coast of Santa Margherita is required, just over two miles south. This is no great shame however, as Santa Margherita itself is a beauty to explore, with terraced gardens and castles by the sea ensuring the trip is not a wasted one.

Yacht Destination
Portofino yacht charter, the italian riviera is north-western italy’s coastal showcase, a place where the ligurian alps meet the apennines with a dash of la dolce vita and a well-deserved reputation alluring yachts to one of the most popular yachting hotspots in the mediterranean, portofino. discover all that a portofino yacht charter has to offer..
Secret Portofino : Superyacht chic & slow travel on the Italian Riviera
Decades of tourism have ensured that the beauty of the Cinque Terre and Portofino rank highly on places you need to visit and the entire coastline has bewitched royalty, writers and celebrities who have been drawn to the Mediterranean climate, beautiful towns and the blend of old and new.
There’s no denying the appeal of Portofino, tucked into a sheltered inlet surrounded by colourful buildings and olive-clad terraces it has been grabbing headlines and attracting the international jet set for decades. Portofino is in great demand as a luxury yacht charter destination.
In the height of peak season, the town morphs into Italy’s version of Saint-Tropez , however if you’re looking for Champagne-spraying nightclubs and hedonistic beach clubs you’ve come to the wrong place.
The Harbour
Many visitors to Portofino don’t venture beyond the harbour and Piazzetta (small square), but renting a yacht on the Italian Riviera will introduce you to places of quiet beauty – especially in spring or autumn, ornate villas hidden amongst the trees and gorgeous scenery with romantic restaurants sandwiched between the mountains and sea.
Portofino is not off-the-beaten path, however it’s possible to escape the crowds of day trippers and celebrities who visit Portofino for one day.
Read our guide to discover the best things to see and do while on a Portofino yacht charter, where you can discover some of the celebrated highlights and the charter spots less visited amidst the surrounding attractions of the Gulf of Tigullio.
Recommended on a Portofino Yacht Charter
We’ve compiled a list of activities to enjoy on a Portofino yacht charter which you can view in the sections below.
Restaurants and Bars
When you’re not savouring the bespoke menus onboard your Portofino yacht charter, indulge in some Ligurian cuisine rich with fish, shellfish, pesto Genovese, tomatoes, porcini or regional pasta.
Here are some of our suggestions of where to eat when you visit Portofino on a yacht charter:
- Skip super-popular Ristorante Puny and head to Ristorante Stella instead for great harbourside views and fish dishes. Reservations are highly recommended.
- Make a reservation at Chuflay Bar Restaurant at Splendido Mare with a terrace facing the Piazzetta – enjoy local flavours with sea bass or seasonal grilled vegetables drizzled in extra virgin olive oil.
- La Taverna del Marinaio has a 1950’s nautical décor but serves excellent fish dishes.
- Finish with a gelato from Gelateria Gepi Portofino, they have a shaded terrace area to sit and relax with an ice-cream. The dark chocolate or cremino Portofino (flavoured with nut and orange peel) are particularly good!
- For something a bit different and far off-the-beaten track for the yachting set, U Pin is an agriturismo set on the hills above Portofino. The owners serve home-made food and the view from the rustic terrace over the olive groves and sea is lovely. Book in advance because they aren’t open daily.
- For seaside dining away from the tourist crowds in Portofino, try The Eight (the Eight Hotel’s seafront restaurant) at nearby Paraggi Bay, or just around the corner reserve a waterside table at Capo Nord restaurant/bar.
Visit Faro di Portofino, located on the promontory past the Church of San Giorgio and Castello Brown. Follow the signs for ‘Al Faro’ out to the lighthouse and you’ll be rewarded with spectacular views at a small bar overlooking the sea where Antonio serves a vibrant Aperol Spritz or a refreshing limoncello on a summers day! Or, head to San Rocco between Portofino and Camogli where the tiny cliffside bar, Bar Dai Muagetti, is a fantastic spot to enjoy the sea view with a chilled cocktail.
Soak up the view from the terrace at Belmond Hotel Splendido , it’s included in every luxury travel guide for Portofino, a bucket list spot for day trippers and the food and drinks have a price tag to match.
Enjoy a tasting session with a glass or two of Ligurian wine from any of the wine producers who tend to their vineyards on the steep terraces in the region. You’ll be suitably persuaded to linger ashore by grapes grown in soils that are no stranger to wild herbs or crisp sea breezes. Try a glass of Nostralino, Pigato, Vermentino or the sweet Sciacchetrà that pairs well with crisp biscotti – where better to buy a bottle to enjoy back on your charter yacht?
Attractions
Enjoy an aperitivo in the Piazzetta which is the heart of Portofino and watch the world go by.
Walk up the pedestrian street beside Trattoria Tripoli (on the south side of the harbour) to the Church of San Giorgio and a few minutes later Castello Brown for superb views over Portofino town and the visiting superyachts.
Go shopping in Portofino! For a small town, Portofino has plenty of high-end boutiques including Prada, Loro Piana, Missoni, Gucci, Dior, Giorgio Armani, Luca Jewellers and Louis Vuitton. For the luxury brands, head to Molo Umberto I, Piazza Martiri dell’Olivetta, Via Roma or Calata Marconi. Mingo Portofino is well-known for custom footwear especially sandals, or take a half-day trip to the town of Chiavari to browse their large antiques market, Mercatino dell’Antiquariato, where you can buy everything from antique furniture to vintage Italian fashion and artworks.
Much of the Ligurian coastline is best seen from the sea, however there are lots of walkways between towns if charter guests want to go ashore for a leisurely amble or a more strenuous hike.
Explore underwater or the great outdoors – the Protected Marine Reserve of Portofino is perfect for using your yacht toys, go swimming around the rocks at Punta Chiappa or try diving at Grotta dei Gamberi or Punta Vessinaro. Portofino falls in the protected zone for the Pelagos Sanctuary , therefore it’s a wonderful opportunity to appreciate marine wildlife viewing of whales and dolphins. Portofino Regional Natural Park has many walking paths that follow ancient pilgrim trails through wild thyme, holm oak and pine forests. You can visit the park website here for more information about walking trails.
Museo del Parco di Portofino is situated at the edge of Portofino harbour and has a collection of outdoor sculptures. Open in summer, the sculpture park also hosts meetings, events and cultural gatherings.
Book a tour to the 14th century La Cervara Abbey , positioned on a cliff between Portofino and Santa Margherita Ligure with elegant gardens overlooking the sea including a wisteria courtyard. You can visit the first or third Sunday of the month between April and October.
Beyond Portofino
Bespoke Yacht Charter can arrange extended yacht charters that enhance your time along the Ligurian coastline and show you the best of Italy’s culture, architecture, cuisine and scenery.
Some of our Italian Riviera yacht charter suggestions include:
- Adding Genoa to your itinerary. It’s a feisty city with a vast maritime heritage, lots of historical buildings and age-old caféterias that bristle with life.
- Visiting charming Camogli, a fishing town sprinkled with brightly coloured houses and a few attractions such as Castello Della Dragonara. Foodies will no doubt head ashore to Revello Focacceria for the best foccacia in town! Camogli also hosts two famous traditional festivals – Sagra del Pesce is a fish festival that celebrates the bounty of the sea and is held on the second Sunday every May, and the Festa della Stella Maris takes place in August giving yacht charter guests a visual spectacle with parades, boat processions and candles floating in the sea.
- Drop anchor at San Fruttuoso, located between Camogli and Portofino. It’s best reached by sea (though a visit is also possible on foot; we suggest you follow the 1.5-hour Portofino Mare trail which is less challenging than the trail starting at Portofino Vetta). The bay is dominated by San Fruttuoso Abbey and the Torre dei Doria. The clear, greenish-blue sea holds the Christ of the Abyss statue 12-metres down on the sea bed, popular for diving excursions. San Fruttuoso is a lovely place at twilight when the tourist boat shuttles have returned to the coastal resorts and it’s much quieter to enjoy the scenery from the comfort of your private charter yacht.
- Go to Rapallo when on a Italian Riviera yacht charter. You can stroll along the seafront promenade that was frequented by creatives Ernest Hemingway, D.H Lawrence and Ezra Pound, admire the frescoes on the town buildings, ride on the funivia (funicular) to the 16th century Sanctuary of Our Lady Montallegro or swim in the bays at pretty San Michele di Pagana.
- Centred on a peninsula split by two bays, Sestri Levante has all the charm and natural beauty of Portofino, yet outside of summer you’ll barely hear an accent other than Italian. Shops on Via XXV Aprile range from pasticceria selling creamy pastries to pint-sized souvenir stores devoted to lemon soaps and ceramics. The town remains an understated attraction for luxury yacht charters to northern Italy, with particular mention to a yearly festival dedicated to Danish author Hans Christian Andersen and the sandy beach at Baia del Silenzio (Bay of Silence) giving an unsung gem for families on yacht charters.
- Explore Moneglia which is a small seaside town that’s ideal if you have an aversion to yacht charter hotspots. Moneglia is not a ‘bells-and-whistles’ yacht charter destination – you may be surprised to find any information on it other than its proximity to the Cinque Terre. If you prefer the authenticity of local culture and a place the Italians have kept to themselves, Moneglia is for you. Visit the Santa Croce church, swim in the clear sea then finish with a meal at Assirto which is worth the visit alone.
- Discovering the five villages of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Cinque Terre by boat. Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore have distinct charm and are surrounded by postcard perfect coastline, pretty churches, citrus orchards and walking trails. Our top pick is booking a sea view table at Ristorante Belforte in Vernazza, a stunning location for a hearty plate of squid ink tagliatelle in between town-hopping on your yacht charter.
- Portovenere is popular for day trips from La Spezia and is eye-catching when arriving by boat as you approach the colourful waterside Palazzata case-fortezza ( fortress houses). Located on the Gulf of the Poets, the town got its name from the Latin ‘ Portus Veneris ‘ – don’t miss visiting the Church of San Pietro located at the site of a former church dedicated to the Temple to Venus. Yacht charter guests can ocean gaze from Byron’s Grotto, follow the caruggi up to the medieval Castello Doria for panoramic views or cruise to Isola Palmária to go hiking or admire the Grotta Azzurra (Blue Cave).
- Lerici and Tellaro are picturesque towns on the eastern side of the Gulf of Poets, opposite to Portovenere. They have many of the same attractions as the villages of the Cinque Terre with less crowds – colourful buildings, quaint fishing boats, medieval castles and pleasant walking trails.

Portofino Yacht Charters
Portofino is a picture-perfect escape for yacht charters that offers guests many different sights to see and activities in which to indulge. A few days in Portofino takes you a step back in time.
The desired destination for A-list faces, royals, and wealthy yacht charter guests alike, Portofino is characterized by colorful, pastel houses dotting its coast, the Medieval Castello Brown, boutique shopping, delicious local cafes and clear, emerald-green waters.
For a taste of the village’s diverse geography, head to the Portofino Regional Park – it’s the perfect mix of dense forests, green grasslands, orchards, and gardens. Venture out of the park, and still, there are sights to be seen: like the San Giorgio Church and the lighthouse, both of which boast exquisite views of the coastline and sea below.
When you’re done wandering through its streets, sail your yacht to the Abbazia di San Fruttuoso; set amidst pine and olive trees on the land, dive into the sea below for a larger-than-life bronze statue of Jesus Christ. Named the Cristo degli Abissi, it is said to protect sailors and divers from harm.

Portofino Yacht Charters – Things To Do & See
As you plan your next Italy yacht charter vacation to the Italian Riviera, make some time for Portofino to see the beautiful sites listed below:
Castello Brown Known for its unique stature and unusual decor, the Genoese-built Castello Brown stems from a complicated history; fought over, throughout the years, by Venetians, Savoyards, Sardinians, Austrians, and finally, Napoleon. Turned into a private mansion in 1867, it boasts a grandiose, neo-Gothic, tiled staircase, idyllic gardens, and just a short walk away, Portofino’s beautiful lighthouse.
Abbazia della Cervara Built in 1361 by a local priest, Ottone Lanfranco, this abbey dedicated to St. Jerome. Named for the native woodlands that surround it, this enchanting abbey houses formal gardens, a 15th-century chapterhouse, a 16th-century cloister, and the Saracen Tower. It has been home to Benedictine monks, three popes, French king François I, and even a saint – St. Catherine of Siena.
Church of San Giorgio Overlooking the beautiful Bay of Portofino, the oval-shaped Church of San Giorgio has been destroyed and rebuilt multiple times since it was first erected in 1154. Home to relics of San Giorgio brought back by sailors who were active in the area’s crusades, hidden in a marble shrine that sits beneath the church altar, this church is regarded for both its beauty and historical significance.

Are you renting a boat in Portofino with or without a skipper?
There are several factors to consider when considering a Portofino boat rental with or without a skipper. A skipper's experience and knowledge of the local waters can greatly enhance your safety during the trip. They know the area, weather conditions, and potential hazards, ensuring a worry-free and secure sailing experience. Skippers can guide you to the most picturesque locations, recommend the finest restaurants, and provide valuable insights into the region's history and culture. They also take care of the technical aspects, allowing you to immerse yourself in Portofino's beauty fully.
If you choose a yacht charter in Portofino without a skipper, you must possess the necessary sailing qualifications and experience. The boat owner typically requires proof of your boating skills, such as a valid boating license or certification, to ensure your competence in handling the vessel. You'll be responsible for navigating the boat and planning your itinerary. Familiarity with local charts, tides, and weather patterns is crucial to ensure a safe and enjoyable journey. You'll also be responsible for the safety of yourself, your passengers, and the vessel. It's essential to be attentive, follow maritime rules and regulations, and exercise caution while on the water.
