and the other is an all with a modern spoon bow. They are quite different. I believe the 28 you are talking about is the latter and has a skylight above the table? I've sailed both and the more modern has a bit better , construction but the skylight always .
Kind regards,

at the end of the summer. This is a very high quality , similar to 28s in quality. I've only sailed her 5 times, so I am not an expert, but she very nicely. Mine was an abandoned Yard , so the was low, but she needs an and re wireing. and are very solid. Biggest issue so far is a rotted . The is very shallow, which may lead to this. Other than that all the problems are delayed maintance. There is not a lot of information on the around. If you find a well cared for boat, you will be happy!

Our 28 was formerly named Kinda Nice, and was located in the Penobscot Bay area. We are very pleased with the boat. Ours had some issues when we bought it, mostly from sitting without attention. A window was not secured and other opening were left open, etc, and the floor had suffered for it. But, the basic boat is rock solid and it very nicely. We have owned the boat since 1997.
Like any other boat owner, we have made changes. The boat was re-wired, and has been re-powered. The just did not have enough against and winds in coastal . The other changes have been cosmetic - redid the , put in a larger sink (we would not pay $500.00 for a sink, so we installed a very large mixing bowl bought for under $10.00 - installed a proper drain and I have the most awesome sink ever!), sanded and varnished, etc.
We really like the Mariner 28' and if you can find a sound one, would recomend it highly.

in . She needed some done to the 1 lunger desiel, a new and is missing the . I love the boat so far, and she sail like a dream, has class! The issues I'm have are thru the deck along the inside hand rail, getting worse with every rainstorm, the will not properly, a lot of valves, a mystery, and today when I had the filled for the first time, leaks all over the place, rugs soaked, ect. The is wonderful though, trying to protect it from all the h2o. Does the handrail come apart from inside under the liner? My list of projects is getting quite long. Any ??

Mariner 28 (mid 80s)

I'm thinking about buying one of these flybridge cruisers and was wondering if anybody knows anything about them, and perhaps make comment about their sea going characteristics and general handling. I'm told that the smaller 26' rolls and pitches a bit too much but I have no info on the 28'. A photo of a Mariner 28 can be found here ( http://boatpoint.ninemsn.com.au/Content/WebPhotos/M/M195000/M196224.jpg ) Cheers, Nick

The Mariner 760 / 780 don't roll so much because of a problem with the hull. The simple fact is that a 26 ft of this style (or probably the 28 that you're looking at) is simply too small to have a flying bridge. A significant portion of the centres of gravity (both longitudinal and vertical) are as a result of movable on board weights (ie people) 2 or 3 people on the flying bridge and the VCG is raised to the point wher the boat becimes unstable. I don't think the 28 was available without the flying bridge, but the 26 is quite common in the sedan. So long as you keep people from going upstairs - or at least limit the numbers and conditions under which they're up there, both boats should be ok. Later on Mariner bought the moulds to a 28 footer from Savage. This was known as the 2800 and is more reminiscent of a Riviera etc. It has the reputation of having an excellent hull - as have all the Savage boats. It is of course rather more expensive (you'll pay around 80K for the 2800, 55K for the 28 and 35K for the 26) but if you can afford it, it's definitely worth the extra money

I wanted to drop in and say hi to the Mariner owners out there. I just picked up an old Mariner 28 and aside from a few dozen questions that I am figuring out the answers to, love the boat. I have had Columbia's for the past 20 years with sailing mostly in the area around Baltimore and Annapolis... and no, my picture is not the Mariner..LOL

Michael, Just saw this! Welcome and great choice of a boat! Check out Mariner Yachts Owners Group Lou Illiano Mariner 28 Lillia Navesink River, NJ

Welcome new owner. We purchased a 1978 Mariner 28 last March and sailed her on Lake Michigan. We had enough time to "do what was needed" to launch by May 2010. Now, I'm in the process of doing some more needed update/upgrades. Fire away with your questions.

I used to own a Mariner 28, they're great boats if you got one that's been taken care of. Solid and fun to sail.

:worthless: Let's see that baby! I've always liked Mariners. Mike

I'm also a proud owner of a Mariner 28. Great boat. We sailed ours from NYC to Cape Breton, NS last summer and it was amazing in the ocean. Trusted it completely on the run from Cape Cod to Halifax. Enjoy the boat.

I can see that this is an older post. But I too just purchased a Mariner 28 about a month ago. Appears to be a very solid boat. Have taken it out a couple of times now. Stable and roomy compared to the 22' I used to have. Rich

Welcome! Check Out the Mariner Yacht Owners Group Mariner Yachts Owners Group . I posted the 1979 M 28 Sales Brochure on the Mariner Yachts page on Face Book. What hull number are you. We are trying to figure out haw many were built. Lou \

Hello, glad to hear from you. I'm not sure how to decipher the number, but the hull ID # is MYN28024M78B. Any information that you have will be gladly accepted. Thanks Rich

Rich, MYN- identifier for Mariner Yachts New Hampshire (now taken by a firm in Florida) 28xxx- 28 foot boat series M78- Model year 1978, which began in August (?) 1977 B- month of production (Believe A was August. which makes B September ) Makes sense. Hull #1 was registered as a 1977. you are Hull 24. I was hull 58 MYN28058M78H I think mine was built in March (1978). Hull 1 is for sale in Tennessee. I hope this helps. Lou

It does help, very kind of you to share. The previous owner of my Mariner made some modifications to the cabin interior. Most we're good, keeping a lot of the teak. He however, put vinyl flooring on the cabin ceiling and floor. While rather practical, not a look that I care for. I'm one of those guys, and my girl is one of those girls that prefer a more traditional look. Any chance that you have pictures of the interior of your Mariner? I would like to see the original lay out and get some ideas for the winter refit. Rich & Rachelle

Rich, I do not have any decent pics of my cabin interior. I was redoing it, but didn't take any before pictures. Check on Yacht world or sailing texas. There are some "For Sale" pics that are decent. The headliner was a vinyl sheet held in place by teak or mahoghany battens. The material was sort of cream with a dark grey swirlly smoke pattern. It always looked to me like the mildew had gotten to the vinyl, but no that was the pattern. Drop me an email lwi2858 (at) gmail. I may have a swatch of the vinyl, but I wouldn't advise trying to match it. You should check in at MYOG. There are a few folks who just got boats, and may be willing to take pictures. Also If you need lenses (most do) for the P & B stainless nav lights, I can get you a contact. My cabin had a teak and holley sole, and mahoghany panalling everywhere else. The windows had leaked and destroyed the mahoghany around the cabin trunk, and the sole had rotted;got the sole up and was planning on Lonseal for the replacement. My cabin was kind of dark due to the mahoghany, I was planning ultra suade for the cabin trunk around the windows. You can do all kinds of stuff with cork flooring, a light color with teak or mahoghany (depending on how they finished your cabin) battens could look nice, easy replacement and practicle, as its a noise insulation. "Traditional" is a funny thing. Teak was originally used because it was CHEAP. Real yachtsmen used cherry or walnut! The "herreschoff" look, with mostly white panels and dark trim is very practical, as it "lightens" the cabin, and looks nice. Look at a lot of boats, traditional gives you a lot of latitude! lou

Did you get Peter Vehslage to send you an invitation to join the new Mariner Yacht Owners's group. If not send me a request at [email protected] . Mariner Yachts

Dear Lou, If you still own a Mariner 28 sailboat please contact me. I am trying to start a Facebook site but need other "members". My boat is a 1978 model which I have owned for a year. I am located in Ontario, Canada. I got no response from Mariner Yacht Owners Group David

R & R, I have been the owner of a 1978 Mariner 28 for about a year. I have lots of photos of the boat interior if you are still in need of ideas. I have made quite a few modifications to our boat. How can I contact you? David Day by Day

mariner 28 sailboat specs

Review of American 28

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all.

The boat equipped with a fractional rig. A fractional rig has smaller headsails which make tacking easier, which is an advantage for cruisers and racers, of course. The downside is that having the wind from behind often requires a genaker or a spinnaker for optimal speed.

The American 28 is equipped with a fin keel. A boat with a fin keel is more manoeuvrable but has less directional stability than a similar boat with a full keel.

The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 0.71 - 0.81 meter (2.33 - 2.63 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

The boat is typically equipped with an inboard Yanmar YE8 diesel engine

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for American 28 is 1.73, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 6.6 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for American 28 is about 121 kg/cm, alternatively 681 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 121 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 681 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is a Ballast Ratio?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio) Indicates how fast the boat is in light wind: - Cruising Boats have ratios 10-15 - Cruiser-Racers have ratios 16-20 - Racers have ratios above 20 - High-Performance Racers have ratios above 24 Sail-area/displacement ratio (SA/D ratio): 11.26

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 18m 2 (193 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

If you need to renew parts of your running rig and is not quite sure of the dimensions, you may find the estimates computed below useful.

UsageLengthDiameter
Jib sheet 8.4 m(27.5 feet)10 mm(3/8 inch)
Genoa sheet8.4 m(27.5 feet)10 mm(3/8 inch)
Mainsheet 21.0 m(68.7 feet)10 mm(3/8 inch)

This section is reserved boat owner's modifications, improvements, etc. Here you might find (or contribute with) inspiration for your boat.

Do you have changes/improvements you would like to share? Upload a photo and describe what you have done.

We are always looking for new photos. If you can contribute with photos for American 28 it would be a great help.

Review of the O'Day Mariner 19 Sailboat

Ahunt/Wikimedia CC 2.0

For over 40 years, the 19-foot Mariner sailboat has been a popular daysailer. Based on the hull of the fast, stable Rhodes 19, the Mariner added a small cabin and other features. Built by O'Day from 1963 through 1979, and currently, by Stuart Marine, the Mariner was marketed as a family daysailer.

As one of the first affordable, trailerable fiberglass sailboats, the Mariner has been popular on lakes and protected bays every since. With its roomy cockpit, wide-beamed stability, and easy sailing characteristics, the Mariner deserves its reputation and is still among the best general-purpose sailboats of its size.

  • Excellent boat for learning to sail and for family daysailing
  • Stable and handles well if wind or waves kick up
  • Very large cockpit provides comfortable sailing for 4 to 6 crew
  • Solid and well constructed; older boats have held up well
  • Self-righting and positive flotation
  • Cabin is useful for daysailing but cramped for sleeping aboard for long
  • Older boats susceptible to leaks in centerboard locker (if abused by previous owners)
  • Early models lacked self-bailing cockpits

Specifications

  • Length overall: 19 feet 2 inches
  • Beam: 7 feet
  • Draft: keelboat: 3 feet 3 inches - centerboard up: 10 inches - centerboard down: 4 feet 11 inches
  • Empty weight: keelboat: 1435 lbs. - centerboard: 1305 lbs.
  • Sail area (main and fractional jib): 185 sqft
  • Mast height (deck-stepped): 27 feet 10 inches
  • Rudder: keelboat: fixed - centerboard: kick-up
  • Recommended outboard engine: 2-6 HP
  • MSRP $24,000 depending on options - widely available used (NADA Marine Guide average retail price for 1977 models: $2,110)
  • Parts readily available for older boats, plus information from owners and class associations

Review of the Mariner 19 Sailboat

In the 1950s the Rhodes 19 was a popular wooden racing and daysailing sailboat. In 1963 Olympic gold-medal sail racer George O'Day bought the hull design, redesigned the topsides with a small cabin, and began producing one of the first affordable fiberglass family sailboats, the Mariner 19. While still producing a keel version, O'Day offered a centerboard option that improved trailer launching and allowed the Mariner to sail up to a beach.

The Mariner rapidly became a popular club one-design racer but also a good family boat seen widely on lakes and bays. By 1979 O'Day had produced almost 3800 Mariners - a huge number for any one model - and after O'Day discontinued the Mariner to focus on larger cruising sailboats, Spindrift and then Stuart Marine continued building the Mariner. The Mariner is still being built - probably the longest continuous production run of any sailboat model ever.

In the late 1960s and 1970s, design changes increased the Mariner's popularity for family sailing. The 2+2 model added two more berths in the cabin, for a total of four, although the cabin really is too cramped to call this boat a cruiser. (Sleeping aboard is more like backpack camping.) The cockpit length was increased to the transom, making a much larger space than in most boats of this size.

The current model includes nonskid on deck and the cockpit seats, all control lines led to the cockpit, positive flotation, and a kick-up rudder on the centerboard model that allows the boat into very shoal waters. With its wide beam and fractional jib that reduces heeling, the Mariner is stable and safe to sail in most conditions.

Virtually all Mariner owners say they'd buy one again - they have no regrets. The features most commonly cited are its stability ("virtually untippable"), its oversized cockpit (where you spend most of your time anyway), and how easily it can be launched (even on a shallow boat ramp).

Perhaps most important, the Mariner is very forgiving of the sailor's mistakes - and thus is an excellent beginning boat. The few complaints of Mariner owners focus on the cramped interior, where the cabin roof is too low for taller people to sit on the settees without bumping your head.

Good Mariners can readily be found on the used market. There are more likely to be problems with an old trailer (rust, wear and tear) than the fiberglass boat itself unless it was abused by a previous owner. For a new owner, The Mariner Class Association offers many benefits, including boat information, sailing tips, sources for parts, and a newsletter.

If you're interested in a small sailboat with a bigger cabin for pocket cruising, check out the West Wight Potter 19 - an outstanding small sailboat. If you’re thinking about a trailerable sailboat like the Potter 19, remember that one of the great advantages is the ability to take it easily to other sailing destinations, such as heading to the Florida Keys in the winter.

Here’s an inexpensive, effective way to control your tiller if you have to let go for a moment while sailing. Need a new outboard motor for your small sailboat? Check out the great new propane-powered outboards from Lehr. If you own a trailer for your boat, be sure you maintain it adequately both to keep it working into the future but to stay safe when using it.

We are hoping that the administration can rectify this issue soon, but unfortunately at this time we can make no promises as to when... we have been working on letting the higher powers that be 'know of the situation... hang in there iboaters, we've been through a lot over the years and this is just another rough weather system rolling through to endure is all. I am looking at purchasing a Mariner 28 HP long shaft OB. Owner says it reads: 664 L 591 20. I havenot been successful at locating this motor for parts lookup. Also will a 25 hp short shaft hookup to this motors powerhead? Thanks

Rear Admiral

Re: MARINER 28 HP. What year IS it? Your s/n comes up as: 28 EL 664-572506 - 1979 From here: http://www.marinshopen.se/Motorer/O...årslista/Mariner2530hp/tabid/460/Default.aspx Parts Listing: http://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury-outboard/644.cfm Gerry

Re: MARINER 28 HP. What year IS it? I don't spek dis language. Is there and English version of this info. My guess says it looks like a 1977, and did not see how it comes up with a different SR. number! 5 not 6 digits. What does L designate? Long Shaft? ( it is) ignor that letter in SR number? More help pls.

Re: MARINER 28 HP. What year IS it? My apologies, I thought you had left out a number (591 20) between 591 and 20. In that case it is a '77 year and EL indicates electric start, long shaft. Don't use the L in the s/n. 28 EL 664-58351 - 664-571175 1977 From here: http://www.storesonline.com/site/573683/page/608045 Parts list above is the same. Gerry

1978 Mariner 28

  • Description

Seller's Description

Classic Mariner sailboat, built when they didnt skimp on fiberglass. Suppper solid hull and rig with a good suite of sails. Beautifull teak interior that needs some restoration. Boat is ready to sail as is, motor starts and runs but it does need some work. water leaks over the winter damaged the plywood under some of the bunks and it will need replacing. Forward hatch has a broken hinge but a brand new hatch comes with the boat and is ready to be installed. Interior cushions need to be recovered but foam is high quality and in good shape. This boat is a delight to sail, and excellent preformer with a simple easy to use rig.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Shoal draft: 3.5’/1.07m

Your engine's RPM range is important in choosing the right propeller for a given application. For example, if you look at your tachometer at top speed and it is not within the engine's RPM range then that is generally not good. You want your RPM's to be within the proper range while at wide open throttle (WOT). Be sure to do your testing under your normal boating conditions and with a good propeller (not bent, cracked, or excessively chipped).
