2024 IRC European Championships | Hosted by the Royal Irish YC

royal irish yacht club merchandise

Three major sailing championships will be hosted by the Royal Irish Yacht Club in Dun Laoghaire in Autumn 2024 in what will be a three week jamboree of keelboat racing, culminating in the IRC European Championship.

First up is the ICRA National Championships, which will see yachts across all classes competing on exciting Dublin Bay courses and with plentiful shoreside entertainment. The ICRA National Championships will run from Friday, 30th August to Sunday, 1st September. The timing of this event may put some of the Dun Laoghaire fleet at a dis-advantage if they are not careful to maintain crew discipline on ICRA’s Eve – typically, the last Thursday night race of the Dublin Bay Sailing Club season can be a rowdy affair!

Crews of J boats will barely have time to hose down their boats and fold away their racing sails before the Key Yachting J Cup Ireland kicks off with preliminaries in the Royal Irish yacht Club on Friday 6th September 2024. First run in the RIYC in 2023, this very successful event returns with back-to-back racing on the weekend of Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th September 2024. We expect large entries from England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland given the opportunity to race in the ICRA’s and/or the IRC Europeans the week before and the week after.

Crowning off the three weeks of competition will be the IRC European Championship which runs from 12th – 15th September 2024. Run in conjunction with the Royal Ocean Racing Club, this will bring the cream of Grand Prix cruisers racers to Dun Laoghaire and will prove to be a spectacular event for both participants and spectators. In a special partnership with RORC, RIYC are preparing a format which will be inclusive for Club, Regatta and Professional sailors alike while Dublin is only 20 minutes away by metro and full of sights and experiences for fellow travellers.

Running the events on consecutive weeks allows visiting boats to come and enjoy their pick of top level racing and also enjoy some downtime with their friends and families exploring the hinterland of the area. The Preliminary Notice of Race will be issued in the next few weeks.

‘George’ Invitational Team Racing Regatta

25th & 26th may 2024.

Emerging like a phoenix, demand for top grade team racing events has resulted in the revival of the renowned George Invitational which maintained twenty years of continuity in the sport in Dun Laoghaire in the 70’s, 80’s & 90’s until the club ran the 2 nd  World Team Racing Championships in 1999. In times past the Invitational welcomed the top team racers from the UK, Ireland & the US to Dun Laoghaire to compete for the George Invitational Trophy.

Set against the backdrop of the home of Team Racing in Dun Laoghaire, the George is organising two days of Swiss League team racing aboard Fireflies dinghies followed by knockout sailing on May the 25th and 26th. The event is a celebration of the clubs long & successful history as the cradle of Irish team racing and the birthplace of the sport almost eight decades ago.

Alongside the racing there will be an opportunity for team racers past and present to meet & enjoy the event in the George & participate in the dinner on Saturday night in the George dining room for all sailors, race officials and volunteers. Teams are encouraged to enter early.

WATCH: Irish "ghost ship" found drifting off coast of Bermuda

The irish 'ghost ship' - which came from the royal irish yacht club - was discovered off the coast of bermuda by matt rutherford and his colleagues from the ocean research project..

Matt Rutherford on board the Irish yacht the Wolfhound in 2013.

A sailor has shared footage of his discovery of an eerie Irish ghost ship drifting 800 miles off the coast of Bermuda.

Matt Rutherford and his colleague from the Ocean Research Project found the abandoned yacht "somewhere in the Atlantic"  in 2013, but they only recently shared footage of the amazing discovery on YouTube.

"This is one awfully abandoned sailboat - Wolfhound from the Irish Yacht Club," Rutherford said in the video.

  • African “ghost ship” washes ashore in Co Cork during Storm Dennis

Rutherford and his colleague noticed that the yacht's sail was not up and noted that the ship was "behaving strangely".

"I have no idea what's inside, I'm going to go and search around and I hope I don't find any dead bodies or anything," Rutherford said in the footage of his discovery of the boat.

The pair thankfully didn't find any dead bodies but found clothes and personal items strewn all over the yacht's cabin.

"This is absolutely crazy by the way. Here I am, 800 miles from Bermuda, 1,500 miles from the US, standing on a very nice Swan 48, in the middle of the ocean."

Rutherford and his team towed the Irish ghost ship, despite it being 48 feet while his crew's boat was only 42 feet.

"We're doing our best to try to get her to Bermuda," Rutherford said. However, after fuel and engine problems, the Wolfhound was cut loose.

The yacht was skippered by Irish sailor Alan McGettigan, who made headlines in February 2013 when he and his crew were rescued about 70 miles north of Bermuda after departing Connecticut bound for Bermuda.

According to the Irish Times, "McGettigan, Declan Hayes, and Morgan Crowe all from the Royal Irish Yacht Club (RIYC), and Tom Mulligan from the neighbouring National Yacht Club (NYC) in Dún Laoghaire, were rescued by a cargo ship when their 48-foot yacht Wolfhound suffered two knockdowns and McGettigan activated an emergency beacon pinpointing their position."
