Yacht crew salary guide
Leading from the helm as a Captain is undoubtedly one of the most fulfilling and rewarding career paths in the superyacht industry.
The Captain holds the most senior position onboard a yacht and the one responsible for the overall operation of the yacht, the safety of its crew, owners and guests. It’s an all-encompassing position where excellent navigational capabilities are coupled with a high level of administrative and managerial skills.
The role differs depending on the size of the yacht, its usage and its cruising itinerary. Captains on smaller yachts need to be hands-on problem solvers and multitaskers. Under 35m, for example, the Captain’s position also encompasses the role of an Engineer, whilst on larger yachts the Captain has dedicated teams and Heads of Departments under their command.

The responsibilities of a yacht Captain include:

How to become a yacht Captain?
Maritime training and sea-going experience is required. Positions are qualification based, from a Master 200, Master 500, Master 3000 and up to a Captain Unlimited. Training may be completed in a National Maritime Academy, a university or a specialised Sailing School.
Mandatory certificates needed to work on board a yacht
All crew members regardless of position and seniority need to have a valid STCW Basic Safety Training certificate, along with a recognised Seafarers medical certificate, the most popular being the ENG1 which is issued by an MCA (Maritime and Coastguard Agency) professional medic.
Without these two certificates, it is not possible for crew to work on board a yacht and a Recruiter will not be able to assist you in finding work onboard a yacht. For more information about mandatory certificates please visit our Mandatory Certificates Guide .

How to Get a Job as a Yacht Captain
Kate got her start in the yachting industry working as crew. She spent five years cruising the Bahamas, Caribbean, New England, and Central America, then segued that experience into a career in marine journalism, including stints as editor of Dockwalk and ShowBoats International .
The role of a captain is cut out for those with a deep love of the sea and who don't shy away from responsibility. If you’re an experienced first mate or a bosun itching to take the helm, here’s everything you will need to become a yacht captain...
The most common path to a yacht’s wheelhouse is by rising through the ranks in the yachting industry, starting on deck and building sea time, gaining boat handling and geographical experience, and accruing licenses. But even after the golden ticket is earned — that 500GT or 3,000GT Master license — you’ll find there is more to getting the job than the piece of paper. Most rising crew will get the ticket before they are ready to assume the responsibility. Here is what crew agents and yacht owners have to say about what it takes to be a superyacht captain...
What is a Yacht Captain?
Simply put, a captain runs the vessel, in some ways like a CEO runs a business. He or she shoulders all the responsibility on board and reports directly to the owner or their representative. “The successful captains are all excellent leaders, able to set a common goal for their crew, and ensure motivation despite arduous seasons and long hours,” says Deborah Blazy, who, as general manager of Lighthouse Careers in Valbonne, France (near Antibes), specializes in placing captains. “Important character traits are to remain calm at all times but also to have the right sprinkle of charisma to keep crew morale and standards high.”
What Does a Yacht Captain do?
Driving the boat is just a small part of a captain’s job — many say the easiest part. Captains also hire and manage all other crew on board, plan and execute voyages around the owner’s and charter guests’ expectations, organize repairs and maintenance, control costs, and adhere to all international, flag, and port state regulations — all while providing personable, first-class service, and maintaining the highest levels of safety.
So the role requires a captain to be much more than a navigator; he or she is also part project manager, accountant, mechanic, human resources manager, concierge, and, most of all, chief problem solver. As Blazy puts it, they should have knowledge of the perfect anchorage, but also “have a direct dial to the most prestigious restaurants and be able to book the prime tables last minute.”
On smaller vessels, the captain will pitch in to assist in all roles on board, from changing the oil to washing the dishes. On larger yachts it is much more of an administrative position.
- M/Y Artefact: On Board with Capt. Aaron Clark
What Qualifications Do I Need to Become a Yacht Captain?
The captain must hold a license that is commensurate with the gross tonnage of the vessel and approved by the flag state. In addition, the yacht’s insurance company needs to be comfortable with the candidate’s experience and license and approve the hire. This is understandable when you consider that the underwriter is the biggest financial stakeholder in the vessel — on the hook for the cost of repairs or settlement if the captain makes a mistake.
Here are the licenses you will need to hold to become a yacht captain:
Vessels < 200GT
- RYA Yachtmaster Offshore (with Commercial Endorsement)
- or RYA Ocean Certificate of Competence (with Commercial Endorsement)
- or IYT Master of Yachts < 200T
- or MCA STCW Master (Yachts) < 200GT
- or USCG Operator Uninspected Passenger Vessel License (OUPV/Six-Pack) < 100GT (U.S. Green Card holders can apply)
- or USCG Master Inland/Near Coastal < 100GT (U.S. citizens only)
- or USCG Master 200 Ton Oceans (U.S. citizens only)
Vessels < 500GT
- MCA STCW Master (Yachts) < 500GT Certificate of Competence
- or USCG Master 500 Oceans or Near Coastal (U.S. citizens only)
Vessels < 3000GT
- MCA STCW Master (Yachts) < 3000GT Certificate of Competence
- or MCA Merchant Navy STCW Master < 3000GT
- or USCG Master 1600GT (U.S. citizens only)
- or USCG Master 3000GT (U.S. citizens only)
Vessels > 3000GT
- MCA STCW Master (Unlimited)
- or USCG Master Unlimited Oceans or Near Coastal (U.S. citizens only)
- or Marshall Islands Master of Yachts Unlimited
When it comes to the USCG licensing, Capt. Ted Morley, chief operations officer of Maritime Professional Training (MPT) , notes that it’s “important to make the distinction regarding charter vessels, ocean routes versus coastal, and the number of passengers on board. The waters get murky when you talk about some of the other requirements — such as PSCRB for yachts with lifeboats, DP for vessels that are equipped, ECDIS, ARPA, and a host of other specialty requirements that many Flag and Port states will require of masters on vessels in particular service, areas, or equipment.”
What Experience Do I Need?
“I think a lot of mates with about five years of demanding sea experience and good work habits have the ability to be great captains,” says one owner, who has three large yachts.
The most important experience is time on yachts, as opposed to other types of vessels. “We have very little luck with a captain looking to join a yacht with zero yachting experience,” says Ian Pelham, director of Preferred Crew, a crew agency in Fort Lauderdale.
The yachting industry is quirky and far removed from the predictability of the commercial world. Pelham gives the example of a cruise ship, as he once ran a fleet personnel department for a cruise line: “A captain on a cruise ship has a number of perks, including a cabin steward who cleans the personal space of the captain, there will be mess stewards who will serve and clean up the crew areas for the officers. Generally there is solid rotation — you know exactly when you are to join and when you heading on vacation. When on vacation you do not get calls from the owner asking where you put the ‘good’ whisky when the cousins were aboard. On a yacht, even the big ones, the captain has to be ready to step in at any level, including cleaning up, to make sure the owner has a great time. Most commercial captains just have not had that kind of experience.”
Blazy adds, “[A commercial captain’s] experience is often best suited to the Passenger Code vessels over 3,000GT, where the duties and working conditions in terms of rotation are often similar. There is, however, a huge learning curve in terms of standards and customer expectations.” She recommends these captains gain experience on yachts before assuming the top role. “For the more junior candidates who are happy to start again from the lower ranks on board the yachts there is a big advantage; often they are bringing great transferable skills and relatively high tickets for the deck teams, and so are able to climb the ranks rapidly. Those with the ability to be flexible in terms of outlook and approach will always do well,” she says.
- The Best Superyacht Wheelhouses in the Business
What Do Owners Want?
“Owners are generally looking for someone who will give them the ultimate holiday experience while making them feel safe on board,” Blazy says.
When it comes to specifics though, each owner will want a captain that precisely fits with their vessel size and itinerary. “Different programs call for different personalities,” Pelham says. “I have seen captains who are extroverts, introverts, confrontational, compromising, joyful, serious, etc., who have each been very successful in their individual programs. I also believe that this is part of what makes a captain a fantastic fit for one program and a complete miss on another.”
Despite being some of the wealthiest people on the planet, most yacht owners care deeply about the costs, so financial accountability is a big part of being a successful captain.
“It’s a big responsibility for the captain to take care of the owner’s large asset. Good common sense is required,” says one large-yacht owner. “Fuel costs and dockage fees need constant awareness. Transiting the yacht at 12 knots instead of 22 knots from Nassau to Lauderdale protects the owner’s assets. Of course there are some owners who just don’t care about costs, but a majority do!”
This owner also expects his captain to spend time in the yard with the yacht, not consider it vacation time, in order to keep track of the yard’s billable hours, and to have some good mechanical knowledge so they can “withstand the salesmen/ consultants suggestions about replacing everything on your yacht.”
- M/Y Florentia: On Board with Capt. Andrea Franci
How Much Does a Captain Earn?
With the stress of responsibility comes monetary reward. A captain can earn an excellent salary, with longevity and vessel size generally having the biggest influence on just how excellent that salary is. But just as the yachting industry is unique, so is each boat and what it pays.
“(There is) no such thing as average, or industry standard,” maintains Pelham. “My team has placed a captain on a 35-meter paying more than $20,000 per month, day one, and on a 100-meter paying about $8,000 per month, day one. I know of captains earning around $4,000 per month and I know of at least one couple earning $30,000. The pay of the captain is completely dependent on what the owner and the captain both believe it is worth.”
Dockwalk’s Salary Survey does give some good guidelines though. In its most recent 2021 survey, crew agencies provided a range of salaries, from the low end on vessels below 80 feet: $5,000 to $10,000 per month; to the largest vessels over 280 feet: $23,000 to $28,000 per month. Numerous captains working on yachts from 60 to 179 feet also shared their salaries and the average from their responses in each vessel size category fell right in the middle of the range given by the agencies.
What is the Best Way to Land that First Position?
“Finding your first captain role is no easy task. There is always the stigma attached that you have not done it before and so are you capable?” Blazy says.
Pelham seconds this: “Our clients love to see that the captain has already done what they want them to do next. If the yacht is 50 meters, they want to see 50 meters on the CV. If they are planning a circumnavigation, they want to see a circumnavigation in their history,” he says.
- Where Next? Career Advancement for Yacht Captains
Of course, that isn’t good news for anyone looking for his or her first captain role. Pelham recommends emphasizing the experience on your resume that matches where you want to be. “Think about what you did as a mate on your previous yachts. Then pick those things that you will be doing as a captain on your next yacht, and highlight those aspects,” he says.
Blazy says the most common path on the bigger yachts is when the chief officer grows into the junior captain role, “moving forward steadily in terms of drive time and responsibility, covering for the senior captain while he is away. There is a mix of confidence and humility that is at play, and the timing will depend on the individual person and the owner’s expectations.”

Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5 cast: Meet Captain Glenn’s new and returning crew members
Captain Glenn Shephard will be back on the small screen soon for Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5.
After a delay and a slew of fan speculation, Season 5 of Below Deck Sailing Yacht finally received a premiere date and a trailer.
However, in true Below Deck fashion, a couple of alums make up Captain Glenn’s latest crew, but a fan favorite is missing.
Colin MacRae isn’t returning as Chief Engineer after a turbulent Season 4 that fractured his friendships with Gary King and Daisy Kellier.
The three helped revamp the sailing show after a lackluster Season 1, making it a hit along with Captain Glenn. Colin will undoubtedly be missed.
Below Deck Sailing Yacht stars Daisy Kelliher and Gary King are back
Two people needing no introduction are Gary and Daisy, who are each back for their fourth season on Below Deck Sailing Yacht.
Last summer, photos of Gary and Daisy filming Season 5 were leaked; honestly, we weren’t surprised to see them in the mix. Despite their friction, which amps up for Season 5, Daisy and Gary make good television.
Gary was featured much less in the trailer than in previous seasons, and that likely has to do with the sexual misconduct allegations that came out after Season 5 was filmed. Recently, Gary shared an update about his accuser as he continues to proclaim his innocence.

Who are Captain Glenn Shephard’s new Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5 crew members?
Chef Cloyce Martin takes over the galley, and at 22, his age will play a huge factor in the season. We already see him clash with Daisy in the trailer.
Davide Morosi takes over Colin’s chief engineer role, and he seems to be pretty private, with little to no activity on social media.
Stew Diana Cruz declares herself “an organized mess” who has caught the acting and yachting bug.
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Diana Cruz (@dianacruzc_)
Danni Warren rounds out the interior crew. She has a connection with Below Deck Med’s Bri Muller and seems to want to be in the social media influencer game, too.
Deckhand Keith Allen catches Daisy’s eye on Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5. Keith isn’t just a sailing yachtie but a photographer and diver who loves to travel.
Emma Crouch makes up the rest of Gary’s deck team. She’s all about being a yachtie, including helping others get into the business as a trainer with Paper Boat Yachting Academy.

That’s a brief preview of the Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5 cast. Fans will have to turn in to find out more about Captain Glenn’s crew, especially to learn how Daisy and Gary work together after their Season 4 fallout.
Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5 premieres on Monday, October 7 at 9/8c on Bravo. Seasons 1-4 are streaming on Peacock.

Captain Glenn, Daisy Kelliher & Gary King Are Going To Ibiza For ‘Below Deck Sailing Yacht’ Season 5

‘Below Deck Med’s Chef Johnathan Shillingford Thinks Aesha Scott Handled Those Rude Charter Guests “Very Well”
‘below deck’s 8 worst guests of all-time: from jill zarin to delores the midnight swimmer, ‘below deck mediterranean’ exclusive clip: aesha scott stands up for herself against a rude charter guest.
At long last, Below Deck Sailing Yacht returns for its fifth season on October 7. Captain Glenn Shephard , chief stew Daisy Kelliher , and first mate Gary King are leading the Parsifal III into unchartered waters this season: Ibiza. While fans will miss OG cast member Colin MacRae—whose romance with Kelliher ended very, very badly—there is a new crew of yachties to obsess over this season. Chief engineer Davide Morosi, chef Cloyce Martin, deckhands Keith Allen and Emma Crouch, and stews Diana Cruz and Danni Warren will no doubt be stirring up trouble as they work hard during charters and party hard on their nights off.
The trailer begins on a sad note. Now single, Kelliher returns to the Parsifal III. “Going into this season, I got rid of some dead weight,” Kellier says via voiceover as footage of MacRae and Kelliher canoodling flashes on the screen. “The breakup did a number on me last year, but now, I’m coming back more focused, full of energy.” As she sits triumphantly in her confessional seat, Kelliher says firmly to camera: “I’m fucking good at my job, and I’m taking back the reins.” On cue, the very next scene is Kelliher yelling at King while he lies in his bunk. “I’m not fucking carrying this season on my own, you fucking prick!” The more things change, the more they stay the same.
The trailer then continues to show off its new setting: Ibiza. “Ibiza is known as being the party capital of the world,” says Captain Glenn via voiceover. As guests are shown enjoying themselves, the yacht heels, causing random objects to shatter. Later, the crew gathers for their first meeting. “This is the last time we’ll all be friends so enjoy it,” Kelliher tells the team. “We”ll either fuck each other or fight each other.” “Or both,” replies Captain Glenn cheekily.
A montage of chaos ensues as Kelliher spills a drink, guests boink their heads, and Martin sets off a fire alarm while trying to achieve a fancy, flaming presentation. Morosi is even shown fully nude trying drunkenly to climb into the bed above Captain Glenn’s in their shared cabin. “You all right?” asks Captain Glenn warily. “Nearly,” says Morosi shakily.
While several hookups between the crew are shown—including Kelliher and Martin—and people are shown doing their jobs poorly, the most dramatic part of the trailer involves Captain Glenn’s reading the crew the riot act after giving them permission to party with some guests during a charter. “I set some ground rules, two drinks maximum,” says Captain Glenn as he scolds the crew. “You knew the rules, you broke the fucking rules, and now you’re here getting upset.” Stunned, the group can only look on.
As the trailer ends on a dramatic scene when another yacht is about to crash into the Parsifal III. Below Deck Sailing Yacht fans are left to wonder: could this be the most dramatic season yet? Tune in to Bravo on Monday, October 7 at 9/8c to find out!

VIDEO: See Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5 Trailer! Daisy Slams Gary as a “Prick” After Failed Boatmance, Captain Glenn Warns the Crew, and a Firing is Teased, Plus New Yachties Are Introduced!
Credit: Fred Jagueneau/Bravo
The Below Deck universe is one of the popular franchises on Bravo. Fans have been clamoring for the trailer for Below Deck Sailing Yacht following the major breakdown of Daisy Kelliher and Gary King ‘s short-lived romance last season. Now, it’s finally here, and the trailer teases everything viewers want — drama, romance, and breaking the rules with the guests.
As fans of Below Deck Sailing Yacht know, each season of the show takes place in a different location. Now in its fifth season, the show is set in Ibiza. Season four of the show was set in Italy. This new season comes after Gary was accused of sexual assault.
The new season of Below Deck Sailing Yacht seems like a good time based on the trailer, which comes exclusively from E! News . As it begins, Daisy can be heard saying, “Going into this season, I got rid of some dead weight. The breakup did a number on me last year. I felt very broken. But now, I’m coming back in more focused, full of energy and I’m f–king good at my job. And I’m taking back the reigns.”
Of course, she is referencing her breakup with Gary. She then counters the previous statement by saying, “It’s gonna be a s–t show.”
The trailer then teases a bit of work-related drama as she says to Gary, “Guess what? We have a f–king job to do, and I’m not f–king carrying this season on my own, you f–king prick!”
Naturally, the season isn’t only about the failed romance between Daisy and Gary. The trailer also shows the crew getting a bit too friendly with the guests. Captain Glenn Shephard , who is clearly upset, can be seen reprimanding the crew after having too many drinks with the guests.
He says, “You guys went out with some guests, I set some ground rules. Two drinks maximum. You knew the rules, you broke the f–king rules, and now you’re here getting upset.”
This season also welcomes some new faces. There’s Chef Cloyce Martin , Chief Engineer Davide Morosi , Stew Diana Cruz , Stew Danni Warren , and Emma Crouch as the deckhand.
Fans can watch the premiere of season five of Below Deck Sailing Yacht on October 7.

How Mike Lynch’s widow may have survived Bayesian sinking, according to its former captain
Mike Lynch’s widow may have survived the Bayesian tragedy because her concerns about the safety of the superyacht prompted her to leave her cabin, its former captain has suggested.
Angela Bacares survived the sinking off the coast of Sicily last month, while her tech entrepreneur husband and 18-year-old daughter were among seven who died.
Stephen Edwards, who was the captain of the Bayesian for five years until 2020, suggested that she may have survived because her tendency to be concerned about safety onboard led her to leave her cabin before the boat began its fatal rollover.
Mr Edwards told The Telegraph that Ms Bacares “always wants to know what is happening and what the crew are doing”.
“She is always the first person to come up to the bridge if she hears us scuttling about up there. That could explain why she was saved and Mike wasn’t,” he said.
In the aftermath of the tragedy the widow reportedly told doctors that the boat had tilted, waking her and her husband.
According to Italian newspaper La Repubblica, Ms Bacares said she had climbed up to see what was happening before chaos ensued, with shattered glass all over the yacht.
Mr Edwards, who has spoken to former colleagues who were on the Bayesian that night, said that the sinking happened in just a few minutes once the yacht began taking on water, with the extreme tilt of the boat and broken furnishing making it extremely difficult for its occupants to climb to safety from the lower cabins.
“Those who stayed curled up in bed were in the worst situation,” he said, adding that some of the guests also got up to see what was happening.
“Then the storm hit hard, placing them in the melee of flying furniture, glass and other items,” he said. “Some had made it to the saloon at this point and they are the ones who survived, as their route outside would have been a little clearer.”
He added: “Inside the cabins, the only way to think of this is that people were lying in their beds one minute, and the next the room was on its side, totally dark, with the door now either in the floor or in the ceiling above.
“Cabinets crashed open as the catches were weak, resulting in glassware and crockery falling out. I’m told almost all the furniture broke loose inside the boat.”
Crew members who were on deck rescued passengers who were close at hand, but Mr Edwards said that heading down towards the flooded lower parts of the yacht “would have meant certain death”.
The former captain said the nine crewmembers who survived are all suffering from PTSD. “They are not doing very well,” he said. “The dominant feeling is still one of shock from the event. They are dealing with what happened, how it happened and how quickly it happened.”
He said that once the weather worsened, the usual drills were started, with the yacht’s three generators running and connected, its bow thruster made available and the main engines ready to start.
According to Mr Edwards’s account, the chief engineer was on his way to the bow in order to haul the anchor, which had come loose and was swinging around, when an extreme storm called a downburst drove the yacht onto its starboard side.
At an angle of more than 42 degrees, known as the flooding point, water pours into the vents that must be open so that the engines and generators can operate.
Mr Edwards said he was “100 per cent certain” that the stern door was closed.
“I also suspect all the hatches were closed, but if they weren’t it was because people were trying to escape through them,” he added.

Mike Lynch, the U.K. investor and founder of IT company Autonomy, has been identified as one of two bodies recovered from the Bayesian, the yacht that sunk off the coast of Sicily early Monday, according to several reports coming out of the country that cite the chief of Civil Protection, Salvo Cocina. The boat, registered to Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, quickly capsized in the early hours of Monday after it was struck by a tornado-like water column. Fort Myers Beach: Boat crashes into Matanzas Pass Bridge...again.
UPDATE: 12:40PM
The Florida Department of Transportation says the damage caused by the shrimp boat was limited to "scrapes to the paint on the outside beam".
The bridge will remain open.
UPDATE: Tuesday, September 17th
On Tuesday, the Florida Department of Transportation confirmed that the Matanzas Pass Bridge was hit by the same shrimp boat that crashed into it on Monday.
A report on Tuesday described the boat's outrigger making contact with the bridge after which the shrimp boat then backed away.
FDOT says that a marine unit reported no visible damage to the bridge, and the bridge remains open.
The department has dispatched a bridge inspection team to assess the bridge and document any damage.
UPDATE 3:22 P.M.:
All lanes are back open on the Matanzas Pass Bridge.
ORIGINAL STORY:
A shrimp boat crashed into the Matanzas Pass Bridge Monday morning, leading to a complete shutdown of the bridge for several hours.
The incident occurred when the Captain Jack shrimping boat’s outrigger became lodged underneath the bridge.
Watch FOX 4's Anvar Ruziev's full coverage here:
Deputies say there is no major damage, and no injuries. The Florida Department of Transportation said the closure was necessary to allow inspectors and the Coast Guard to inspect the bridge following the crash.
Deputies rerouted traffic and marine activity.
"This incident will cause delays and we appreciate the public’s patience as we work to ensure safety in the area," FDOT said.
David Richardson, captain of Sundance Sailing, witnessed the crash from the dock. "Oops as we say in captain land," Richardson commented. "There were a couple of thumps, bangs, and a crash with broken metal."
Some neighbors found the collision nostalgic, "It reminds me of the old days when we used to have a swing bridge that got stuck open all the time," said Fort Myers Beach resident Sam Laurie. "But it's new for a shrimp boat to run into it."
Shrimp boat crew members familiar with navigating the bridge explained how the crash could have happened. Tyler Adams, a shrimper, shared that when passing under the bridge, they usually lower the outriggers using winches to fit beneath the structure.
"Sometimes we don't get it all the way down and hit the outrigger on the bridge," Adams said.
The boat’s owner, Chris Gala, provided further insight, explaining that the length of the boat’s outriggers was 65 feet, the same as the maximum clearance height of the Matanzas Pass Bridge. While the crew was instructed to wait for a support boat to assist them, they decided to attempt the crossing without help, a decision that Gala believes may have led to the accident.
The crew plans to attempt another crossing under the bridge Monday evening, this time waiting until low tide.

A traveler's guide to Novosibirsk, the unofficial capital of Siberia
Trans-Siberian heritage
Residents of Novosibirsk love trains and are proud of the fact that their city played a significant role in the history of the grand Trans-Siberian railway, which spans the breadth of Russia. The railway is such a part of Novosibirsk identity that it is even depicted on the city’s emblem, along with the bridge that crosses the Ob river and two Siberian sables standing on their hind legs.
In the city, there are as many as five monuments to trains, and an open-air locomotive museum is located in the vicinity of the train station Seyatel’. The museum has more than 100 steam locomotives, diesel locomotives and carriages, reflecting the history of rail transportation in Russia from pre-revolutionary times to the present day. Wondering around the stationary trains and comparing your height with the diameter of the gigantic iron wheels of the first steam locomotives is all very well, but why not climb inside the carriages and see how the nobility once traveled across Russia in pre-revolutionary times? These tours will however need to be booked in advance. The museum opens from 11:00 until 17:00 every day except Mondays.
Novosibirsk spans both sides of the river Ob. In the early twentieth century, the border of two different timezones passed right through the city which led to a strange situation- morning on the east bank started one hour earlier than on the west bank! The two-kilometer covered metro bridge that crosses the river is considered the longest in the world. Due to the fluctuations in temperature across the year (on average +30 °C to -30 °C), during the summer the metro bridge expands, and in the winter it contracts by half a meter. To counter these effects, the bridge’s supports are equipped with special rollers that allow it to move.
The cultural center of Siberia
The repertoire of the theatre can be viewed on its official website . The theatre season runs from September to July, and comprises mainly classical performances, like the ballet “The Nutcracker” by Tchaikovsky, Borodin’s opera “Prince Igor” and Verdi’s “La Traviata”.
The large Siberian sea and ligers
Weekends are best spent at the Novosibirsk zoo . The zoo is known for breeding big cats, although surrounded by controversy, hosts a successful crossing of a tiger and lion, which of course would not otherwise breed in wildlife. Ligers, or exotic cubs of an African lion and Bengal tigress, feel quite comfortable in the Siberian climate and even produce offspring. The zoo is open to visitors year-round, seven days a week, and even has its own free mobile app, Zoo Nsk .
Every year at the beginning of January, the festival of snow culture takes place bringing together artists from across Russia and around the world to participate in a snow sculpting competition. The tradition started in 2000 inspired by the snow festival in Sapporo, Novosibirsk’s twin-city.
Siberian Silicon Valley
Despite the fact that Akademgorodok was built half a century ago in the middle of the uninhabited Siberian taiga, architecturally it was ahead of its time. No trees were destroyed for its construction, and houses were built right in the middle of the forest. A man walking through the woods would seemingly stumble upon these structures. At that time, no one had built anything similar in the world and ecovillages only became fashionable much later.
For residents of the Novosibirsk Akademgorodok is a different world. When you step out the bus or car, you are immediately on one of the hiking paths through the forest, between the scientific buildings and clubs. On a walk through Akademgorodok, it is possible to unexpectedly encounter art-like objects handmade by residents of the city which have been erected as monuments and some monuments fixed up by city authorities. For example, the monument to the laboratory mice, which knits a strand of DNA on to some needles, can be found in the square alongside the Institute of Cytology and Genetics. In Akademgorodok there are many cafes and restaurants, in which it is possible to rest after a long walk. Grab a coffee and go to eat at Traveler’s Coffee , or eat lunch at the grille and bar People’s or Clover .
Winters in the Akademgorodok are slightly colder than in the city, so wrap up. Spring and summer are usually wetter, so waterproof boots are recommended. In the summer the Ob sea provides respite from the heat, so do not forget your swimsuit to go for a dip.
Memento Mori
Among the exhibits of the museum is one dedicated to world funeral culture — hearses, memorial jewellery from the hair of the deceased, samples from a specific photo-genre of "post mortem", a collection of funeral wear from the Victorian era, deathmasks, statues and monuments. There’s also an impressive collection of coffins. One of them, resembling a fish, was manufactured on a special visit to Novosibirsk by a designer coffin-maker from Africa, Eric Adjetey Anang, who specializes in the production of unusual coffins.
Surprisingly, the crematorium itself does not look at all gloomy in appearance and definitely does not look like infernal scenes from movies, or like crematoriums of other cities that gravitate towards gloomy temple aesthetics. The Novosibirsk crematorium is decorated in “cheerful” orange tones and is surrounded by a park with a children’s playground nearby. A visit to the museum then leaves you with mixed feelings.
Novosibirsk underground
Tourists from all over the world go down into the Moscow metro to take a ride and a few selfies in the most famous underground museum. The Novosibirsk metro is also quite a museum in itself — it has 13 stations, the most beautiful of which is Gagarinskaya, Sibirskaya and Rechnoy Vokzal.
The ultramodern Gagarinskaya station is like a real cosmos underground. Its technologically themed design includes marble walls with metallic elements, dark blue backlighting and portraits of Yuri Gagarin. The Sibirskaya station looks like an underground treasure trove, decorated by Altai masters craftsmen with mosaics of precious Siberian stones. The Rechnoy Vokzal station is framed with ten glowing stained glass windows depicting the largest cities of Siberia, including Novosibirsk itself, Omsk, Barnaul and others. The platform resembles a big ship sailing on the Ob, from which ancient Siberian cities are visible through its windows.
How to get there
The easiest way to get to Novosibirsk is by plane with Aeroflot or Novosibirsk airline S7 with one-way tickets from Moscow costing from 200-250 USD. If you decide to take from the train from Moscow, you’ll have to travel approximately a third of the Trans-Siberian Railway. That’s 3,300 kilometers over almost a three-day journey.
Where to stay
There are many great hotels in Novosibirsk. Amongst the best include a four-star Doubletree hotel by Hilton , which is located near Lenin Square (per room from $200). After renovations and repairs, the congress-hotel Novosibirsk has improved (per room from $100) and is located across from the train station. Less expensive but of a similar standard is the four-star River Park hotel near Rechnoy Vokzal metro station, which costs $80 per night.
