If you are considering a long term career on-board a superyacht and are aged between 18-25 you may want to consider our Superyacht Cadetship .
Prerequisites
Deckhands are typically required to work long hours and must be physically fit and able. You must be energetic and enthusiastic with an ability to work to a high standard in all tasks.
All seafarers must have an ENG1 seafarer medical fitness certificate to work at sea (click here for more details).
Whilst it’s not essential to hold your ENG1 to complete your training with UKSA, it is required to hold this to secure work in the industry. For this reason, we recommend all students gain their ENG1 before they attend training.

Yacht crew training, our crew training centres.
Bluewater is the longest established dedicated yacht crew training provider. As superyachts have grown larger in length, more technical and more complex to run, the demand for quality yacht crew training courses has increased year after year. Read More
As superyacht cruising grounds have expanded, so have we. We are proud to offer quality training in the two major European yachting hubs: Antibes on the Côte d'Azur and the Spanish yachting hotspot of Palma de Mallorca.
Superyacht Australia
How to become superyacht crew.
Superyacht Australia, the peak national industry body for the superyacht industry in Australia, is proud to have published a new resource aimed at making it easy for Australians to start their journey as superyacht crew. Australians are natural superyacht crew with over 90% of our population living on the coast. Fishing, surfing, swimming, sailing, and paddling are weekly pastimes for nearly all Aussie kids growing up in and around the water. Many have “saltwater in their veins” with surf lifesaving “Nippers” and sailing club “Tackers” programs training children from the age of five in skills that will be sought after as future superyacht crew.
The superyacht industry has virtually been unknown to young Aussies, with those discovering it as a result of backpacking in Europe or by reality TV shows such as “Below Deck” broadcasting on popular streaming services. Internationally the superyacht industry is booming, with vessels getting much larger, more of them and requiring double the amount of crew as many yachts offer rotational positions for senior crew.
The superyacht industry is also gaining momentum in Australia with popular charter destinations including Sydney, the Queensland coast and the Kimberley’s attracting more yachts. This new resource aims to educate young Aussies on what a superyacht is, where you can find them cruising (within Australia and internationally) and different entry-level roles available onboard.
The qualifications required are easy to complete locally in Australia and can provide a great base for future maritime careers. The STCW 95 (Standards of Training and Certification for Watchkeepers) certification is the mandatory qualification set by the International Maritime Organisation and takes 8 days to complete including theory and practical courses.
Australia is lucky to have two great training providers including Crew Pacific , based in Cairns, and Superyacht Crew Academy based on the Northern Beaches of Sydney. Both training providers offer STCW courses and further Steward/ess and Deckhand courses, aimed to provide students with the necessary basic knowledge of the interior and exterior departments before starting their first roles. The resource also outlines the Mandatory Certificate of Medical Fitness required to confirm you are medically fit to perform the duties required onboard.
Once qualified, Australia has many recruitment companies eager to place “green” crew into their first role. This includes Hill Maritime , a worldwide maritime recruitment and consultancy firm, that places quality engineers on quality vessels all over the world. Coastal Yachting Recruitment , based on the Gold Coast, is also experienced in placing professional crew worldwide on luxury superyachts.
David Good, CEO, Superyacht Australia commented “Australia has the reputation for providing the best yacht crew in the world, we have a great education, excellent work ethic, and a relaxed professional attitude. This is our opportunity to travel, get paid exceptionally well, and gain sea-time experience that is highly sought after when you want to come ashore and use that experience.”
Superyacht Australia will be distributing this new resource at career expos in major cities such as Perth, Sydney, Melbourne, Gold Coast, and Brisbane where up to 12,000 school leavers per event attend seeking information on future careers.
This new resource can be found on our Superyacht Australia website here: https://www.superyacht-australia.com/superyacht-careers-information/

- Superyacht Deck Crew Course
The MCA Recognised “IYT Superyacht Deck Crew Course”, according to the MCA, is treated as equivalent to the MCA’s “Yacht Rating Course” .
The five-day IYT Superyacht Crew course is an MCA recognised course and is highly recommended for entry-level students who wish to enter the superyacht industry. It comprises both theory and practical elements that give the student a comprehensive and all-round general knowledge of the requirements of the superyacht industry. Holders of the IYT Superyacht Crew Certificate, which is recognised by the MCA, will not need to complete the Yacht Rating Training Record Book and the 6 months yacht service requirement may be reduced to 2 months sea service on vessels 15 metres and over in load line length. Holders will, however, need to meet the other requirements which are, be at least 16 years of age, hold all Basic STCW certificates and hold a valid ENG1 (medical fitness certificate) or accepted equivalent. They can then apply to the MCA for an MCA Yacht Rating Certificate. See this link to review MSN 1862 (M) which outlines all necessary information. You can find the MCA’s Application for a Yacht Rating Certificate here. On page 2 of the application you will see this note regarding sea time requirements (see screenshot below). Since the MCA have deemed the “IYT Superayacht Crew Certificate/Course” is equivalent to the “Yacht Rating Course”, you will provide your “IYT Superyacht Crew Certificate” and proof of 2 months actual sea service on vessels over 15m in load line length.
The course incorporates three separate MCA recognised courses:
- Superyacht Crew
- VHF Radio Operators
- Small Power Boat and RIB Master

Lucas Urruty Officer of the Watch (OOW) "I started yachting 7 years ago, from not knowing the industry at all to getting my first OOW position last year. I remember in the first stages of my training I had nobody to guide me on how or in what order or priority to do my modules. I followed the yacht route, and up until now I have always gone back to Yotspot in my career to see what requirements, sea time and courses I need and in what order as a reference. I have booked at least 4 of my modules through Yotspot and even got my current job thanks to the site. It has changed the game in our industry regarding crew, training and so much more, highly recommend! "
Liubov Chunikhovska Ex Chief Stewardess (MY Luna, 100m) "If you're looking for a job or recruiting crew I personally think that Yotspot is the best service in the industry. I have chosen to look on this platform because it offers full spectrum of options that you want to include in your search such as temporary or rotational position. I haven't seen it on any other yacht job search site and I always found it super useful to specify your search like that and look for the best option for me. Yotspot is a time saver. I have found my current job on it and I am very grateful for that. There appears to be an increasing number of crew who are using it today. The site can be accessed 24hrs a day 7 days a week. The more it's used the more cost effective it becomes. Most traditional Crew Recruitment companies have no such concessions. Yotspot is our first stop when recruiting"
Brooke Holt Crew Coordinator (Sea Shepherd Conservation Society) "Yotspot is super useful as it is available 24/7. The fact that candidates are ranked from most suitable to the role, to least makes it easier to sort the square pegs for the round holes! Each job receives an excellent response rate with often more than one ideal candidate to deliberate over. Over the last three years, we have recruited over 25 crew from Yotspot, all of which have been wonderful additions to the crew. I would certainly recommend anyone needing to hire crew to use the Yotspot service as the value for money is second to none. I can post with confidence everytime. "
Marc Micheletti Captain (MY Eileen, 50m) "I have been using Yotspot since its early inception and I have to say that I keep being very impressed by its simplicity and effectiveness. Not only is it incredibly cost effective, the simplicity of posting a position and looking for crew is amazing. I have also used it myself for looking for employment and it also works really well from an Employee perspective. I am a big fan, keep up the good work Yotspot, you have my full support"

A superyacht captain shares 3 things people who want to charter a luxury vessel should know
- Vacationing on a superyacht may sound like it's all Champagne and sunbathing.
- But before boarding a luxury vessel, superyacht captain Kelly Gordon advises keeping certain things in mind.
- Yachting is a summer pastime with risks and nuances for clients and crew.
Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez soaking up the sun. Travis Barker and Kourtney Kardashian's wedding . Beyoncé's carefree jump into the ocean.
One of these images is likely what comes to mind when you hear the word "superyacht," a phrase generally used to describe a yacht over 80 feet in length.
While ultra-luxurious vessels are associated with all things carefree, tragic events such as the sinking of the Bayesian superyacht off the coast of Sicily on Monday is a reminder that yachting is a pastime with unique risks and nuances. It's unclear what the protocols were on the Bayesian.
For those keen on the idea of chartering a superyacht, captain Kelly Gordon, 42, told Business Insider there are a number of important factors to consider before hopping on board.
Gordon fell in love with yachting after she stepped aboard a yacht for the first time in her mid-20s.
Hellbent on reaching captain level, Gordon quickly worked her way up the chain of command. She's spent most of her time sailing the Bahamas and the Caribbean and is now based in Florida, where she works as a captain on a 108-foot-long privately owned vessel.
Gordon, who has over 12,600 followers on Instagram , shares three factors to keep in mind before boarding a chartered superyacht.
Think of the process of chartering a superyacht as buying a house
One of the most important things to do when chartering a superyacht is to work with a charter broker, Gordon says.
"The charter manager's job is to No. 1: find you a safe boat," Gordon said, adding that in her experience, "Not all programs put safety as high up on the list as it should be."
She also likes to equate charter brokers to Realtors in that they take on the role of finding you the best option for your taste.
Related stories
"You find one that you gel with really well and has a good reputation, and then you discuss with them what your budget is, where you want to go, what your activity levels are, what your personalities are like," Gordon said.
Pairing clients with a crew that aligns with their characteristics is a huge part of a charter broker's job, Gordon said.
"If you think about it, you're living with that crew for 24/7, around the clock," she said. "You're not going put someone that just wants to sit and read books all day with a crew that's extremely active."
Find a crew that is competent and prioritizes safety
Charter brokers also help match clients with a competent crew that prioritizes safety.
"I don't know that many people realize just how much their life is in our hands when we cast those lines and we go to sea," Gordon said.
Part of that is having a safety briefing, which Gordon carries out every time she welcomes clients onto a chartered vessel before leaving a dock.
A thorough safety briefing includes informing clients about the location of safety equipment and lifejackets and the procedures for events such as a fire, a person falling overboard, or the boat sinking.
"You should have a safety briefing, and if you don't get one, you should ask for one," Gordon said.
The process, she added, can be different on privately owned yachts, where passengers may be familiar with the vessel.
The Bayesian is a private yacht owned by tech tycoon Mike Lynch; it's not yet known what kind of safety protocols staff and guests were trained on.
Make sure there's a member of the crew on watch 24/7
"A lot of charter guests think when they go to sleep, the crew goes to sleep," Gordon said.
But that shouldn't be the case, she added. "You want to be on a boat knowing that someone's up, because if the weather changes or the anchor starts to drag, you need somebody that's up and ready to go and get everybody else to handle it."
Among the biggest weather risks are tornados, which can be extremely difficult to predict and prepare for whether you're on land or at sea.
"I'm from the Midwest, where tornados pop up," Gordon said. "It's hard to see a tornado coming, and if you do see it coming, the tornado goes where it wants to go."
Most often, that leaves people near the weather event with just minutes to ready themselves, which is even trickier "in the middle of the night."
While rapid changes in weather are tough to contend with, Gordon recommends researching the areas you are sailing in beforehand, like you would when visiting a new country.
"It's no different than if you're going on vacation on land," she said. "You want to know where you're going. Don't put that just all on the crew."
While the research doesn't have to be as extensive as the crew should be doing, it's important to still be "responsible for your own self as well as your family and your guests."
