The Rolex Sydney Hobart Race is due to set off on boxing day once again in 2022, with an impressive 111 boats due to take to the startline

sydney harbour yacht tracker

Sydney sailors are counting down the days – not until December 25, but the 26, for the much-anticipated Rolex Sydney Hobart Race .

The blue riband offshore classic was cancelled for the first time in its 76 years in 2020, but bounced back in 2021 and will go ahead one more this year with an impressive fleet of 111 boats entered for the 2022 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, which begins on Sydney Harbour at 1pm Monday 26 December.

As is often the case in the Rolex Sydney Hobart Race, the bulk of the fleet is made up of Australian boats and teams, but there are 8 international boats participating this year, including entrants from Germany ( Orione ), Hong Kong ( Antipodes ), Hungary ( Cassiopeia 68 ), New Caledonia ( Eye Candy and Poulpito ), New Zealand ( Caro ), the United Kingdom ( Sunrise ) and the United States of America ( Warrior Won ).

At the sharp end of the fleet, four 100-foot maxis will lead the charge for Line Honours – Andoo Comanche , Black Jack , Hamilton Island Wild Oats and LawConnect . On current form, Andoo Comanche is likely to be favourite to cross the finish line first.

Black Jack won Line Honours in the 2021 Rolex Sydney Hobart, while Andoo Comanche holds the race record (1 day, 9 hours, 15 minutes and 24 seconds) and Hamilton Island Wild Oats (formerly Wild Oats XI ) has the most Line Honours wins in race history, with nine.

Two-handed entrants will for the first time be eligible to win the Tattersall Cup (the prize given to the winner of the race on handicap). A total of 21 two-handed boats are preparing to race, including those that finished second and third respectively in the race’s inaugural Two-Handed Division last year – Crux (Carlos Aydos/Peter Grayson) and Speedwell (Campbell Geeves/Wendy Tuck).

Tracking the "Most Gruelling Ocean Race in the World": Rolex Sydney Hobart

A yacht taking part in the Rolex Sydney Hobart

This 628 nautical mile course is often described as the most gruelling long ocean race in the world; a challenge to everyone, beginner or pro, who takes part.

From the spectacular start in Sydney Harbour, the fleet will sail out into the Tasman Sea, down the south-east coast of mainland Australia, across the Bass Strait which can be dead calm or spectacularly grand, the water is relatively shallow and the winds can be strong, these two elements often coming together to create a steep and difficult sea for yachts. The fleet will then head down the east coast of Tasmania, turning right at Tasman Island into Storm Bay. The winds are often fickle and can vary in strength and direction within a few miles so sailing becomes very tactical. Sailors often think the race is near completed upon reaching Storm Bay, but there is still 40 miles of often hard sailing to go. Yachts can be left behind in the maze of currents and wind frustrations. Even when they round the Iron Pot, a tiny island that was once a whaling station, there's still a further 11 miles up the broad reaches of the Derwent River to the finish line off Hobart's historic Battery Point, with Mount Wellington towering over the city.

The race starts at the infamous Sydney Harbour, attracting hundreds of spectator craft and hundreds of thousands of people lining the shore as helicopters buzz above the fleet, filming for TV stations around the world. The fleet will sail past some of the most beautiful landscape and seascapes found anywhere in the world as they travel down the New South Wales coast, which is a mixture of sparkling beaches, coastal townships and small fishing villages, although for most of the race south the yachts can be anywhere between the coastline and 40 miles offshore.

During the race, many boats are within sight of each other and crews listen closely to the information from the twice-daily radio position schedules. Now that technology has progressed, crews have been able to pin point the entire fleet's whereabouts at any given time and follow each boat's progress against their own using on-board computers and YB trackers, which every boat will be equipped with. The trackers will transmit the GPS positions using the Iridium satellite network to get it back to YB HQ. Each yacht's position is then visualised on the online fleet tracker map. In addition, the yacht tracker system also shows distance to finish line and progressive corrected time positions under the IRC, ORCi and PHS handicap divisions to be calculated quickly.

No matter the time of day or night, the first yacht to finish receives an escort of official, spectator and media boats as it sails towards the finish line. Hundreds of people crowd the foreshores of Sullivans Cove to cheer the yachts and their crews while volunteers from the finishing club, the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania , meet the weary crews with open arms and famous Tasmanian hospitality, and escort them to their berth in the Kings Pier marina.

Then it's time to celebrate or commiserate, swap yarns about the race with other crews over a few beers in Hobart's famous waterfront pubs.

The rhumb line is the most direct course between the start line in Sydney Harbour and the finish line off Southport.

Yes.  The race time for what you can see in the Yacht Tracker window is indicated in the bottom rights hand corner.  You can adjust that time in 10 minute increments by moving the slider under the map.  To show the last recorded timepoint move the slider to the right hand end.

Go to the Legend bar under the Fleet and Race Time bars for an explanation.

Select the race year in the drop down selection at the top of the Yacht Tracker window.  The map will open showing the last time point in the race, and you can adjust the presentation from there.   If you want to view a boat's entire race, select the relevant race year and then move the slider to the left hand end, which will then show all the boats at the time of the race start.  You can then advance the boats in 10 minute increments - see the explanation below.

Click (or tap for tablets and smartphones) the row of that yacht in the table under the Yacht Tracker.  You will see a green tracking line which represents that yacht's route from the start.

Click (or tap for tables and smartphones) the heart icon beside the name of the yacht.  Your list of favourites can then be found in the drop down selection which is found at the top line of the fleet selection.

Choose the boats as favourites, then go to favourites (in the drop down box) and press Toggle Track.

Choose the handicap category you want (eg., IRC, ORCi, PHS), then choose the division you want (or "All" if you want to see all boats in the category).  The map will automatically populate with those boats competing in the category and division you have selected.

The Legacy Tracker has been retained for those users that find that the Tracker (Beta) does not open or operate properly, particularly if they are using older browsers such as Internet Explorer.

Click (or tap for tablets and smartphones) the eye icon beside the name of the yacht.  You will see a green tracking line which represents the yacht's route from the start.

From the spectacular start in Sydney Harbour, the fleet sails out into the Tasman Sea, down the south-east coast of mainland Australia, across Bass Strait (which divides the mainland from the island State of Tasmania), then down the east coast of Tasmania.  At Tasman Island the fleet turns right into Storm Bay for the final sail up the Derwent River to the historic port city of Hobart.

People who sail the race often say the first and last days are the most exciting. The race start on Sydney Harbour attracts hundreds of spectator craft and hundreds of thousands of people lining the shore as helicopters buzz above the fleet, filming for TV around the world.

The final day at sea is exciting with crews fighting to beat their rivals but also looking forward to the traditional Hobart welcome, and having a drink to relax and celebrate their experience.

Between the first and last days the fleet sails past some of the most beautiful landscape and sea scapes found anywhere in the world.

The New South Wales coast is a mixture of sparkling beaches, coastal townships and small fishing villages, although for most of the race south the yachts can be anywhere between the coastline and 40 miles offshore.

Bass Strait (nicknamed the 'paddock) has a dangerous personality. It can be dead calm or spectacularly grand. The water is relatively shallow and the winds can be strong, these two elements often coming to create a steep and difficult sea for yachts.

The third leg after the 'paddock' - down the east coast of Tasmania takes the fleet past coastal holiday resorts and fishing ports with towering mountains in the background. Approaching Tasman Island, the coastline comprises massive cliffs, sometimes shrouded in fog.

It's an event that Tasmanians love to host in the middle of Hobart's Taste of Tasmania Festival.

How did the superyacht carrying tech tycoon Mike Lynch sink off Sicily?

Divers operate in the sea to search for the missing after a luxury yacht sank off Sicily

Five bodies were retrieved on Wednesday, and a sixth on Friday , by divers searching for those missing from the superyacht which sank off the Sicilian coast in the Mediterranean. The bodies found include British tech tycoon Mike Lynch , the UK’s Telegraph reported. The bodies have not been formally identified by the authorities yet.

It is understood that they were retrieved from inside the sunken yacht, which is reported to be lying on its side on the sea bed at a depth of 50 metres

This brings the total death toll to seven; one person, reported to be the chef from the yacht, was confirmed dead on Monday.

The yacht capsized on Monday at about 5am (03:00 GMT) after it was hit by stormy weather caused by a “waterspout” – or mini tornado – according to Italian authorities.

The cruise had reportedly been undertaken to celebrate the acquittal of Lynch in a fraud trial in the United States in June.

His co-defendant in the trial, Steve Chamberlain, who was also acquitted in June, was killed after being hit by a car on Saturday.

Here’s what is known so far about the yacht, those on board and who died or were still missing after it sank.

rescue

Who was on the superyacht which sank?

According to the Italian coastguard, the 56-metre-long (184 feet) British-flagged yacht, called the Bayesian, was carrying 22 people, including 10 crew members.

One person has been confirmed dead after rescuers located a body on Monday at a depth of about 50 metres (164 feet), the AFP news agency reported. Officials have not yet given the name of the deceased but Italian media reported that he was the yacht’s chef.

AFP reported on Tuesday that divers had spotted a second body inside the sunk boat, quoting a source close to the search operation. Authorities have not confirmed it yet, though.

While not all the names of the six missing passengers were not made public officially, they were understood to include:

  • Mike Lynch, 59, a British-Irish technology businessman who co-founded British tech company Autonomy in 1996 and was once likened to Microsoft founder Bill Gates; he earned a PhD from Cambridge University
  • Hannah Lynch, 18, Mike’s daughter, who had just completed her final school exams and was due to begin a degree in English at the University of Oxford this September
  • Jonathan Bloomer, the 70-year-old British chairman of Morgan Stanley bank and the Hiscox insurance company, was confirmed as missing by Hiscox CEO Aki Hussain
  • Judy Bloomer, Jonathan’s wife, was also confirmed as missing by Hussain
  • Chris Morvillo, from British international law firm Clifford Chance, was confirmed to be missing by Salvatore Cocina, head of the Civil Protection in Sicily

Fifteen people, including Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, were rescued. Among others rescued were Charlotte Golunski, 36, a board director at Luminance, a software startup founded by Lynch; her husband, James; and their one-year-old daughter, Sophie. Golunski is understood to have kept her daughter alive by holding her above her head while she was in the water.

All those rescued are in stable condition, although eight of them have been hospitalised, according to Italian news agency Adnkronos.

What do we know about the Bayesian?

Italian shipbuilder Perini Navi constructed the superyacht in 2008 and refitted it in 2020, according to the company’s website.

The yacht’s owner is listed as Revtom Limited, a firm solely owned by Lynch’s wife, Bacares, according to company documents seen by the Reuters news agency.

It was formerly called Salute but was renamed Bayesian after Lynch’s PhD thesis and his software that earned him a fortune. Both of these were based on the statistical Bayesian theory, championed by mathematician Thomas Bayes.

Where was the Bayesian last seen and where was it going?

The Bayesian was last located on Sunday evening in the Tyrrhenian Sea, east of the harbour at Porticello, according to ship tracking websites Vessel Finder and Marine Traffic.

Porticello is a port city located near the Sicilian capital, Palermo.

The yacht had departed on August 14 from the Sicilian port of Milazzo. Its destination was reported to be the Italian city of Bagheria by the tracking websites.

Did a waterspout cause the yacht to sink?

Italian authorities reported that the stormy conditions that caused the yacht to sink were triggered by a waterspout.

A waterspout is a rotating column of whirling air and water mist – sometimes referred to as a mini tornado – according to the website of the US National Ocean Service.

The website adds that a tornadic waterspout is a tornado that forms over water or moves from land to water. They are similar to land tornadoes and can occur during thunderstorms.

Who is Stephen Chamberlain and how is he connected to this case?

Chamberlain, 52, was Lynch’s co-defendant in a fraud trial in San Francisco, which saw both men acquitted in June.

Chamberlain died in a hospital from injuries sustained when he was hit by a car while out running in Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom, on Saturday. His death was confirmed by his lawyer Gary Lincenberg in a statement on Monday.

The fraud case related to Hewlett Packard’s $11bn acquisition of Autonomy, the firm Lynch grew into the UK’s leading tech company before it spectacularly unravelled after being bought by HP in 2011.

Lynch was extradited to the US in May 2023 and he spent more than a year under house arrest before his acquittal. Chamberlain was the former vice president of finance at Autonomy.

The yacht trip was supposedly a celebration of Lynch’s acquittal.

How did the rescue operation unfold?

Specialist divers began a search anew for the six missing people on Tuesday. Three divers, equipped with oxygen cylinders, descended beneath the surface to examine the wreck.

They initially faced difficulty accessing the yacht’s chambers because they were constricted by furniture.

An investigation into the wreck has been opened by prosecutors in the nearby Sicilian town of Termini Imerese.

What have survivors and witnesses said about the incident?

“It was terrible. The boat was hit by really strong wind and shortly after it went down,” survivor Golunski told the ANSA news agency.

She added that she had lost hold of her one-year-old daughter in the water for “two seconds”, but then managed to grab her and hold her up over the waves until a lifeboat inflated and they were both pulled to safety. She reported that people were screaming.

Karsten Borner, a captain of a nearby yacht who witnessed the sinking, said he had turned on the engine of his ship to prevent collision with the Bayesian. “We managed to keep the ship in position and after the storm was over, we noticed that the ship behind us was gone,” he told reporters.

Bloomer’s wife, Judy, is a trustee of the Eve Appeal, a UK-based gynaecological cancer research charity. Athena Lamnisos, the CEO of the Eve Appeal, was quoted by the BBC saying she was “deeply shocked to hear the news that our very dear friend and her husband Jonathan, are among those missing”.

Barge catches fire at Berrys Bay in Sydney Harbour near heritage-listed SS South Steyne

Topic: Fires

A barge secured to a jetty at Berrys Bay in Waverton caught on fire on Sunday night.

The fire was extinguished by Fire and Rescue NSW and Port Authority of NSW crews.

What's next?

A crime scene has been established and specialist police are investigating.

NSW's only heritage-listed vessel, the SS South Steyne, has narrowly avoided a fiery demise after fire broke out on a neighbouring barge in Sydney Harbour.

Emergency services received multiple calls about the blaze at Berrys Bay in Waverton just after 7:15pm last night.

The flames threatened the South Steyne, which was moored next to the barge.

The Port Authority of NSW fire-fighting vessel, 'The Girawaa' arrived at the scene first and battled the flames using boat-mounted water jets.

Twenty-four firefighters attended the site shortly after and found the barge well alight.

Crews managed to extinguish the blaze in a two-hour operation.

The barge that caught on fire sank, but fire crews managed to prevent the blaze spreading to the South Steyne.

The South Steyne celebrated 86 years at sea this year after venturing from Leith, Scotland on April 1, 1938, and arriving in Sydney following a rigorous 64-day maiden voyage.

Its rare Harland and Wolff steam engines, which were put together by the same people who built the Titanic, made it one of the fastest steam ferries in the world during the 1940s and 50s.

The treasured ship was recommissioned by Queen Elizabeth II during her visit to Australia in 1988. It was also her royal yacht while she was in the country.

Over the years it operated as the Manly ferry, it's estimated the South Steyne sailed from Manly to Circular Quay more than 100,000 times and transported more than 92 million passengers.

The South Steyne's owner Brian McDermott told ABC News the ferry was not damaged in the fire.

"All OK, my guys are working on it this morning," he said.

"There was no damage as far as I know.

"The barge next to us caught on fire — very, very quickly apparently."

Mr McDermott, who has owned the ship for the past 30 years, said he was called about the incident last night.

"Few people called me up and said there's a fire next to you."

Later on, he received an update from the Port Authority of NSW.

"Port guys called me up and said the fire was out and there was no damage to the South Steyne, which is good," he said.

There were no injuries reported from the fire.

A crime scene was established at the bay and specialist police are investigating.

Fire crews put booms in place in the bay to contain any hazardous material run-off.

The South Steyne has been moored at Berrys Bay for the past eight years.

In April, Mr McDermott told ABC News on the anniversary of the ferry's maiden voyage that he was still trying to find a permanent home for the ship.
