We gave our boating experts one job: Find the best and most popular Deck Boats and review them.

Our review team always considers durability, price, quality, and value in their reviews.

top deck of a yacht

Deck boats are popular vessels for day touring and towing. Sometimes called platform boats, they have more open space for entertaining and power for watersports.

Similar to a bowrider on performance and a pontoon for pleasure. That makes these boats favorites on lakes, rivers, and even more open coastal areas.

The most popular deck boats fall between 22 and 28 feet long and usually are powered by a single outboard or sterndrive engine.

The primary entertainment and lounging area is often moved to the bow on a deck boat, in addition to the typical stern cockpit arrangement.

Top brands to look for include Hurricane, Sea Ray, Tahoe, Starcraft, Splendor, Bayliner, and Yamaha.

Read the guide to deck boats below to learn more about the differences with other boat types and to see some of our top deck boat picks.

Stingray’s deck boats range from 17 to 21 feet, making them a great place to look if you want a smaller boat. At a little over 20 feet long, the 192SC is great for most small families looking for a boat that can do almost anything. It’s big enough to handle your family and friends and has the space and features to try various activities. From light cruising to fishing and watersports, the 192SC can do almost anything and go anywhere.

  • Length: 20 feet, 1 inch
  • Draft: 14.5 inches

  • Max power: 200 hp

Bayliner Boats

Bayliner M15

bayliner-m15-deck-boat

Where to buy Bayliner M15:

Bayliner builds two different series of deck boats. The Element boats feature their M-hull, a modified cathedral hull with three points, and come in lengths from 15 to 21 feet. The DX series has larger vee hulls with lengths available from 20 to 22 feet.

Bayliners are often criticized for their poor built quality, lack of amenities, and cheap fixtures, but the new generation is worth a look if you’re looking for a lot of bang for your buck. A small deck boat for lakes and bays doesn’t need to cross oceans, and Bayliner allows you to get into one of these boats for a lot less than most other brands.

  • Length : 15 feet, 2 inches
  • Beam: 6 feet, 7 inches
  • Draft: 2 feet, 1 inch
  • Weight: 1,385 pounds
  • Fuel capacity: 12 gallons

The Deck Boat Guide

Deck boats are popular vessels for protected waters like lakes and bays. Since they can accommodate various tasks, they make great first boats . Hull designs and powerplant options vary between makers, but they all generally share spacious cockpit seating and deck space.

What Is a Deck Boat?

A deck boat has a hull shape built to maximize deck space. More deck space gives you more room for people, accessories, and storage.

Sportier than pontoon boats, they’ll cost, generally, between $25k and $60k.

From the outside, these boats look like bowriders but with a few differences. Where bowriders usually have a traditional pointed speedboat bow, a deck boat will usually have a flattened bow and widely flared hull to provide room for more spacious seats.

Hull designs and shapes vary widely between deck boats. Most are made of fiberglass, but some are aluminum. Many have vee hulls, but others use a catamaran or a cathedral hull design to provide a wider platform and even more space on deck. The extra space also makes boarding from the bow easier when beaching the boat. You’ll often find swim ladders on both the bow and stern.

Functionally, deck boats have more room for moving around and entertaining. The bow deck area is often large enough to accommodate different dining, seating, and lounge arrangements.

Size and Weight

You’ll find deck boats from around 15 to 30 feet. The middle ground of this range is perfect for most buyers, with 20 to 24 being the optimal place to be. Of course, the right size boat depends on how many people you typically take out and what activities you plan to enjoy.

As is common with this type of boat, deck boats are generally designed to be easily trailerable. You’ll typically see beams limited to 8-feet, 6-inches for this reason. Like other trailerable boats, the right size depends on the towing vehicle.

Some manufacturers make lightweight boats easier to trailer, but their ride on rough water suffers for it. There’s no perfect solution, so you’ll have to choose which works best for your intended use.

Hull Design

The hull of a deck boat can be shaped in several ways to afford the ride and handling qualities that the manufacturer is looking for. The most common hull type is the standard shallow or deep vee, with a single flared bow and a squared-off transom. Where shoal drafts take precedence over ride quality, the vee will be shallower and the bottom flatter. The above-water profile will be flared at the bow for more deck space.

The Hurricane Sundeck OB demonstrates the sportiness of a deck boat that also has plenty of space in that wider, more open hull design.

Another type of hull common on deck boats is the cathedral hull. This is commonly called the Whaler hull, popularized on Boston Whaler boats. The name comes from the shape of the hull—if you inverted the boat, the points of the hull would look something like a medieval cathedral. It has one center hull keel and two side sponsons on each side.

Cathedral hulls provide great stability over the boat’s beam, making them ideal for short-lengthed beamy vessels that spend most of their time on smooth water but need to cut through a chop occasionally. Ideally, they are a little less rolly than a standard vee hull.

Finally, there are a few catamaran hull deck boats on the market. Catamarans provide an ideal amount of deck space, as the two hulls can be spaced quite a ways apart. In addition, they offer shallow draft and excellent speed and efficiency. They are, however, more expensive to design and produce than other hull types.

Deck Layouts

Deck boats are interesting since they appeal to so many different types of boaters. Much like pontoon boats, they’re made for entertaining, swimming, and lounging on the water. But their extra space provides more options, and it’s not uncommon to find fishing or watersports packages offered.

But some go one step further. For example, Hurricane Boats offers their basic deck boat hulls in several varieties. The standard Sundeck is a classic dual-console layout with wrap-around windshield.

It’s similar to their Fundeck pontoon series. But whereas the pontoon has a rectangular hull shape when seen above, the Sundeck has a tapered nose.

Deck Boats Fun Deck

The Sundeck Sport includes small consoles and no windshield, giving the boat a lower profile and a more minimalist look.

As you browse through other manufacturers, you will see a unique layout here and there. This is all because deck boats are so useful. They’re the perfect multipurpose boat for nearly everyone.

Propulsion Choices

Deck boats come as either an outboard or an inboard/outboard sterndrive. There are also a few jet-drive options, like those built by Yamaha, but these are often better classified as true bowriders or even ski or surf boats.

Deck Boats vs The Rest

Deck boats are very similar to a few other types of boats that you might want to consider.

Deck Boats vs. Bowriders

In many cases, deck boats and bowriders might seem hard to differentiate from one another. What one maker calls a deck boat could easily be classified as a bowrider by another.

The primary difference, if there is one, is the shape of the forward hull and how much space the boat has in the bow. A deck boat will have a flared bow, allowing for more seating and often a wide platform on the front of the boat. This space can be occupied by lounges, facing seats, or left open to provide a casting area for fishermen.

On the other hand, a bowrider will keep with traditional boat lines. It will come to a point at the bow, meaning the forward seats have little space between them.

No matter which one you pick, its seaworthiness will depend more on the person driving than the boat’s design. Boats are tapered to a point at the bow to increase their righting stability should a wave come over them. With their larger surface area forward on the deck, deck boats have less stability and are more prone to pitchpoling in severe conditions. However, neither of these vessels is intended for the open ocean—they are near-shore, fair-weather cruisers.

Deck Boats vs. Pontoon Boats

The deck of both the deck boat and pontoon boat often share similar features and layouts. These two boats are also used for similar purposes—days of cruising on the water, some watersports, and sometimes fishing.

Pontoon boats are built on pre-formed pontoon hulls. A standard pontoon has two hulls on each side, whereas a tri-toon has a larger center pontoon. Pontoons are typically built of aluminum, and plywood decks are secured above. This modular approach to boat building means that the deck space on a pontoon is often fairly customizable, with various seating arrangements and lounges available.

Deck boats, in comparison, are fiberglass boats. That increases their cost but also makes a sturdier vessel. The complex hull shapes that are possible with fiberglass are more capable of handling waves and chop than pontoons are.

Speaking of crossover classifications, the Sea Doo Switch is a pontoon that functions more like a deck boat because of its added jet ski profile.

Sea Doo Switch Sport Sailing From Portside

Pontoon boats best suit inland waters like lakes, rivers, and protected bays. They are ill-suited for ocean swell or even heavy chop. A deck boat is built to address some of these issues and can easily handle moderate chops on open bays and sounds. As a result, they’re common both on large lakes and in calmer coastal areas, like the Gulf Coast of Florida or Chesapeake Bay.

Deck Boats for Watersports

Deck boats are just as capable for watersports enthusiasts as other options . Like bowriders and center consoles, the biggest detractor is their outboard or sterndrive propulsion, which puts the prop close to swimmers.

Still, with care, many people enjoy waterskiing, wakeboarding, and tubing with deck boats. They provide plenty of speed and power to tow a load, and most makers offer sports towers and tow rings as accessories.

Frequently asked questions

A deck boat resembles a bowrider but has more space in the forward seating area. Often, they will have squared-off bows that include a beach boarding and swimming platform.

Deck boats are good for cruising, entertaining, fishing, and some watersports. These boats are about halfway between a pontoon boat and a performance-oriented bowrider. They have fiberglass hulls that perform well and ride through a light chop with ease. But they also have the wide open spaces that a pontoon boat offers, with plenty of seating and floor space for many activities.

Yes, the layout of a deck boat is similar to what you’d find on most pontoons. You’ll often have a side console helm with wrap-around seating everywhere else. Lounges, recliners, and sun pads are common features of deck boats.

Deck boats are generally not very good at handling offshore conditions or rough, choppy waters. Their hulls usually feature flat or shallow vee features that can pound, and their broad bow sometimes presents balance issues. However, not all deck boats are created equally; some are much better than others.

Teak alternatives: 4 options for decking that doesn’t cost the earth

Yachting World

Rupert Holmes explains what’s wrong with the marine industry’s obsession with hardwood and looks at real world teak alternatives

Everyone loves an immaculate teak deck. They look great at boat shows and at chic Mediterranean quays, as well as providing excellent non-slip properties in the most demanding of conditions.

However, teak also has drawbacks. Firstly it doesn’t last forever, especially if a modern, and likely relatively thin, teak deck is scrubbed regularly. At the extreme I’ve seen a deck lose 1mm of thickness each year through scrubbing. Given the high cost of replacement this can have a significant impact on a yacht’s resale value.

The material also easily absorbs heat from the sun, making it uncomfortable to walk on in bare feet when in the tropics or Mediterranean summer. This also contributes to heating the interior of the boat.

Teak-alternatives-Ocean-Cork-close-up

Ocean Cork is one of many firms to offer eco-friendly teak alternatives

Teak doesn’t look good from a sustainability perspective either. A key problem is illegal logging of rainforest in Myanmar, one of the only four countries in which the species grows. Unfortunately, a ban on importing this illegal timber into the EU hasn’t stopped the trade, as evidenced by court cases in countries including Denmark, Sweden, Germany and Holland following the discovery of illegally imported teak.

As a result, the only way to be absolutely certain a source of teak is sustainable is to use salvaged material (or to ensure that the teak can be GPS-traced back to stump).

Timber at risk

“Teak is now considered a high risk timber,” confirms Nigel Stuart, MD of Spirit Yachts . “We take our responsibility to the environment very seriously and we are not prepared to risk using unsustainable wood.”

Teak alternatives have been available for many years and are gaining wide acceptance. In many cases they also offer multiple advantages over real teak, including better longevity. Many can be factory-made to match a template or CAD file, which significantly reduces labour and installation costs, while customisation can extend to logos and boat names.

Available products can be split into four broad categories:

  • Modified softwoods

Expanded foam

Many of these don’t absorb liquids and are therefore easy to keep clean as any dirt stays on the surface.

4 eco-friendly improvements to upgrade your yacht

1. Ditch the teak Teak is no longer universally popular. The price has gone up dramatically, supply is dwindling, and…

hybrid-sailing-systems-oceanvolt-yamila-credit-peter-minder

How hybrid sailing yachts finally became a feasible option

Every sailor is familiar with the wet cough of the diesel engine, and the acrid smell of its exhaust. For…

Many manufacturers offer a range of colours, with the most popular being shades close to freshly-scrubbed teak, or silvered, weathered teak. The former can look amazing at boat shows, though in the real world it can maybe look incongruous to those who understand the damage regular scrubbing does to real teak.

We’ve tried to give indicative prices for different options, but these are exceptionally difficult to pin down. Different products may need vastly different amounts of labour, which obviously affects cost, while detailing and edging is a major factor in the price of factory-made panels. The total cost for boats of similar sizes can therefore vary dramatically depending on the complexity of each of the panel shapes.

1. PVC decks

This option has historically offered some of the most convincing alternative teak products, with the grain, texture, impact resistance and non-slip properties of the real thing. As a result many of the new yachts seen at boat shows actually have simulated teak decks made of PVC.

Teak-alternatives-flexiteek-Southern-Wind-105-superyacht-Kiboko-III

Flexiteek decking on the SW105 Kiboko III

Despite their slightly textured surface, which replicates the grain of real wood, dirt and stains stay on the surface of PVC decking, so it can be cleaned relatively easily with a wet cloth and maybe soapy water. Unlike real teak, which has a mix of hard and very soft fibres, PVC decks can also be pressure-washed. Another bonus is that damaged areas can be sanded back to reveal fresh material that looks new.

One of the best-known brand names, Flexiteek, is celebrating its 20th anniversary and is expanding rapidly, with demand consistently growing at 20% annually. The company now produces 80,000m 2 of its decking product each year.

The 2G version, launched six years ago, is fully recyclable, while microballoons are used in place of chalk filler, which reduces heat absorption (certain PVC deck types and colours have been known to get very hot in direct sun). Flexiteek is available in a standard 5mm thickness and 11 colours, with plank widths from 45mm-200mm to replicate everything from planking to covering boards and cappings.

Flexiteek says PVC experts suggest the surface may start to crack after 25-30 years, but no problems have been observed on 20-year-old decks so far and the life span may be considerably longer. High traffic areas can become glossy, but these can be gently coarse sanded back by hand to the original matt finish.

Teak-alternatives-Esthec-Princess-R35

Esthec seamless decking installed on a Princess R35

Esthec is a part of composite floor specialist Bolidt, which makes flooring in any shape for industrial applications through to decking for ships. Dutch yard Saffier has been fitting Esthec to its range of daysailers since 2008.

“We made one deck with Esthec and set this right next to a real teak deck,” managing director Dennis Hennevanger remembers, having been immediately taken by the product. “We invited all the customers who had ordered a Saffier with teak deck and gave them the choice… they instantly all went for the Esthec deck.”

Saffier has since built nearly 500 yachts with Esthec decks, “all without any problems”. Hennevanger says it is not necessarily a cheaper option to teak, but thinks it should last forever.

Saffier-SE37-lounge-boat-test-running-shot-credit-bertel-kolthof

Saffier’s SE37 daysailer is fitted with PVC decks from Esthec

“I also like the technical side of Esthec,” he adds. “It is made completely seamless [the caulking doesn’t go right through], so it is impossible to have any leakages.” Additional benefits are that it is maintenance free, with no fading, has excellent anti-slip properties and comes with a complete freedom of design.

PlasDeck is less well known in the UK but has been established for 15 years, offering a range of PVC products in 28 shades that look and feel like wood. The company holds patents for non-migratory plasticisers that are bound to the molecular structure. The product is therefore very UV resistant and remains elastic as the oils don’t evaporate over time.

Fungus inhibitors throughout the material hold back the formation of the green mould that can all too easily grows on real teak decks, especially during persistently damp winters.

Teak-alternatives-Permateek-contest-38

Permateek decking on a Contest 38

Permateek is another popular brand name and has recently introduced new shades that better mimic the grain of real teak. From a sustainability perspective, a big drawback with PVCs is they are plastics and will therefore remain in the environment forever. To offset this Flexiteek plants one tree for every 10m 2 of product sold. Esthec, meanwhile is formed from natural components, without the harmful ingredients commonly found in PVCs.

Prices for PVC products tend to range from €150 to €1,000 per square metre, varying according to the design and size of each panel. As a guide, in the UK Permateek costs £150-£350/m 2 depending on the complexity of the design. This compares to a material cost of around £285/m 2 for 6mm teak – but don’t forget there’s far more labour involved in laying a real teak deck.

Gisatex offers a more economic PVC product, at €69 per square metre, but in a thinner textured, non-slip material that makes no attempt to match the grain of teak. The company, which has been established for 10 years, sells matched repair kits for €10 and says a “very long lifespan is expected.” Light weight is a further advantage, but custom panels are not available.

There’s an increasing trend towards cork decking, according to Piet van der Staay of Marinedeck 2000, especially among younger boat owners. It’s a natural product harvested from FSC certified forests, largely in Portugal.

Common advice is to look for a product with large cork grains as these cope better with impact. In any case the material is inherently resilient and is significantly better than teak at resisting wear and abrasion.

Cork is also is a good insulator, so decks remain comfortable to walk on even in strong sun. Over a three to five year period it will slowly take a light grey hue, but this can be sanded back to reveal the original colour.

Teak-alternatives-Marine-Cork-2000

Marinedeck claims that its decking is popular among younger boaters

Marinedeck 2000 consists of cork granules with a synthetic polyurethane binder. It’s produced under high pressure, which gives the feel of high-density material, but is still flexible and absorbs knocks well. It’s supplied as individual planks, or as preformed finished pieces with a standard thickness of 9mm. The company has been in operation since 1986 and says there are still decks in good condition from its early days. As a result van der Staay quotes a 40-year expected lifespan.

Prices for Marinedeck 2000 start at €320/m 2 (ex VAT) including adhesives, while custom panels cost €520/m 2 (ex. VAT).

Another supplier, Ocean Cork, produces 8mm planks as standard, but 4mm is available if weight is critical. Given it’s one of the lightest decking materials available, at only 2.4kg/m2, for cruisers the thinner option appears to offer little benefit. Prices start at €349 (inc. VAT) for 1m 2 DIY kit (including glue and caulking) and approx €400/m 2 (inc. VAT) for larger custom made panels.

Teak-alternatives-Ocean-Cork

Ocean Cork is available in 8mm and 4mm thickness

This is a material with a soft cushioned feel, excellent grip underfoot and good shock-absorbing properties. SeaDek, which is made from a closed-cell PE/EVA foam is popular throughout the racing world, from sportsboats to the America’s Cup and the Ocean Race. It can be made in custom panels and in different thicknesses and is manufactured with an effective acrylic-based pressure sensitive adhesive for quick peel-and-stick application.

SeaDek’s Jason Gardner says the large range of colour, thickness, density and design options means the price range can be very wide. Whether or not there’s already a pattern for that model of boat in the company’s database also impacts pricing.

Sean Roebuck of ProCast, SeaDek’s leading UK fabricator, says prices including VAT generally work out in the range of £114-£151/m 2 .

Cer-Deck, sold by Italian company Ceredi, also has a soft, slightly cushioned feel, very high resistance to degradation in sunlight and is colour stable.

It is 6-8mm thick and is available with a strong 3M self-adhesive backing to minimise labour costs when fitting. Custom panels cost around €250/m 2 (ex. VAT).

Life expectancy for expanded foam materials is around five to seven years for harsh use, and longer for less-heavily used boats. On the downside these materials are susceptible to damage from impact or pets’ claws.

Modified softwood

Lignia is the latest product to be launched on the market, based on pine grown in FSC certified forests. After harvesting, the timber is impregnated with resin, before being dried in a curing process to ensure the resin is locked in at a molecular level. This gives Lignia performance and durability that can surpass tropical hardwoods.

It has a similar appearance to teak and can be worked in the same way, but has an expected lifespan of 50 years. The impregnation of resin means end of life disposal is not as easy as for untreated timber – the recommended option is to use it as fuel in biomass generating plants.

Anyone who saw the Spirit 50CR at last year’s Southampton Boat Show can attest that a quality yacht with Lignia decks will look stunning. It also has the benefit in being faster to dry than teak, which is handy in areas used for seating. Material costs are a little less than for teak, with typical savings around 5-20%. However, Lignia decks are just as labour intensive to lay as real teak.

Price gauge

Tye Conway of UK-based decking specialist Elite-Teak says that typical installed prices in the UK are often lower than elsewhere in northern Europe, with many jobs falling into the following price ranges (ex. VAT) per square metre:

Synthetic teak: £200-£300 Foam decking: £150-£200 Cork decking: £200-£300 Real teak decking: £500-£600

Teak-effect solar panels

Italian solar panel manufacturer Solbian has a range of panels with a pigmented layer that creates different colour schemes. The teak option reduces output by only 6-8% compared to an equivalent standard panel, while custom sizes and shapes can be created without increasing prices.

Teak-alternatives-solar-panels-Spirit-44E

The upcoming Spirit 44E will be fitted with teak-effect solar panels

The company has been working on projects with major boat manufacturers – the panels will be used, for instance, on the locker hatches of the aft deck of the Spirit 44E that’s currently in build. Solbian is also developing a version of the teak-effect panel with a non-slip finish.

Colour shades can also be matched to products of companies such as Flexiteek. Prices are typically 50% to 60% above those for the company’s standard solar panels .

What makes a superior aft deck?

To an extent, the response to this question is personal to each individual who answers. The aft deck is perhaps the most important location on a yacht, whether it is a private or charter yacht. One of it’s core roles is the social interface between the outside ocean world and the yacht’s interior. The aft deck is certainly prime real estate in luxury yacht terms, however there are many different design responses attempting to achieve the ultimate.  Lets have a look at a selection of them.

Sleek and sexy performance sailing yachts naturally have a beamy layout for spacious aft decks, whilst large motor yachts are designed specifically with social areas and aft decks in mind and they often have multiple decks available. Aft decks provide space for al fresco dining, relaxing on and enjoying cocktails at sunset. They provide access to the water for swimming or boarding the tender and they present a first impression to visitors when the yacht is at anchor.

GillSchmid Design has two pools – or is that 4?

Some of the top 10 best aft decks on luxury yachts are quite unique in appearance and styling. With comfortable couches and large tables, they offer the best place on board a luxury superyacht to chill out with friends or family.

Alfa Nero was early to have a very large swimming pool on her aft deck.

Below is a personal selection of the top ten vessels that have glorious and amazing aft decks:

1. Quatroelle – the 88m Quatroelle is all about massive exterior aft decks where guests can feel the breeze while watching the sun rise and set. Clever touches include technical marvels, a section of the big stern platform lowers into the sea. The yacht also has exterior stairs on all of its five decks for easy access to cabins. After a day in the sun, there’s nothing better than cooling off in the bridge deck infinity pool.

2. Indian Empress – this superyacht is famous for starry parties on her sprawling aft deck. There are flowing rounds of seating, a marble bar, plenty of space to dance the night away. Dance to music provided by a professional DJ positioned on the sun deck above. The Indian Empress is very popular with people from around the world and makes an excellent charter yacht. The upper aft deck table alone can seat about 30 guests. Hold a party and you’ll essentially be running a nightclub.

3. Alfa Nero – the Alfa Nero has one of the best aft decks you can find on a luxury yacht. This trail blazer of a superyacht has an awesome eye-catching aft deck that looks cool and trendy. The floor of the 7 x 3.5 metre pool lifts hydraulically to deck level and turns the aft deck into a dance floor or helipad. You’ll just have to remember if you’re choppering your guests home at midnight or inviting them to stay on for a late night swim. As well as the aft deck, there’s a club-like upper salon.

4. Maryah – everyone likes a good mystery. The Maryah is ultra-private but what we do know about her is quite fascinating. The hull began life as a Russian research vessel launched by the Polish Szczecinska Yard in 1990. After the rebuild this superyacht had sweeping curves, accommodation for 54 guests, a cinema and a helipad. Included in the design were three aft decks, a sun deck, a beach club and a profusion of fold-down terraces.

Maryah

5. Luna – her main aft deck is vast, about one third of the yacht’s overall length. When the weather cools, the massive beach club provides a chic shelter with an on-deck feeling. Other explorer yachts look quite dull in comparison to the Luna. The huge aft deck is the perfect area for a cocktail party or any other special occasion like al fresco dining by candlelight.

6. Zefira – winner of the Sailing Yacht of the Year Award in 2011’s superyacht awards, the Zefira is ideal for loafing on deck during long, lazy yacht charter vacations with family and friends. She is big and sleek with long clean lines and uncluttered decks. The beautifully designed aft deck dovetails perfectly with the light and bright Remi Tessier interior design. Start your day with a delicious breakfast on the aft deck.

7. Ester III – this 66 m motor yacht’s interior spaces have been planned as carefully as the exterior. With protection from the sun, wind, rain and cold, the aft deck has a stunning bar up top including a large glass backed swimming pool. Relax on one of the sun beds during the day and then enjoy a tasty meal in the evening outdoors on the large aft deck that has been transformed into an exquisite dining area.

8. Invictus – the Invictus is all about volume. The beautifully designed, spacious water-level aft deck is made larger still by a vast, fold-out, bathing platform and behind it all, there’s a well-stocked bar. It’s no wonder that the aft deck is one of the most popular spots onboard. The garage beyond the aft deck can hold two 8.35 m tenders including a gorgeous Comitti.

Invictus

9. Galactica Star – the sleek design and space is what’s so impressive on the superyacht, the Galactica Star. Access to the awesome aft deck is made easy thanks to two brilliantly lit stairways either side of the beach club. This is ideal for guests onboard. The water, either in the main deck pool or off the bathing platform, is never out of reach. Relax on one of the aft deck’s sun beds while watching the sun go down at anchor.

10. Axioma – is ideal for a superyacht holiday, perfect for outdoor living. The slightly different, yet attractive aft deck is supplemented with a bridge deck bar, spa pool and mouth-watering al fresco dining options. It’s a chilled out, private feeling aft deck, if you need any more sun this is the place to be. The swimming platform also transforms from the grand entrance into a sprawling space for sunbathing, just a few steps from the sea and the pool.

10 Most Affordable Deck Boats

cheap deck boats

Deck boats are known for maximizing available interior space, but what many people may not think about is that they also maximize your boating bang-for-the-buck. They usually have more seating and stowage capacity than other types of boats of the same size, they can adapt to just about any boating activity ranging from watersports to fishing, and they’re every bit as easy to run and maintain as an average bowrider or center console .

Plus, there are lots of deck boats to choose from—lots and lots. We’d encourage any boater to take their time and research as many models as possible before making any decisions, but checking out these 10 most affordable deck boats is great place to start.

Explore All Deck Boat Brands & Models

bayliner element m15

1. Bayliner Element M15

We previously called out the Bayliner M15 as one of the Top 12 New Boats Under $21K for 2021 , but even so, we can’t talk about affordable deck boats without starting here. A list price of just $13,999 for a boat-motor-trailer package (with a 40 HP Mercury FourStroke) makes this one of the most affordable new boats of any type, and its deck boat design means that even at just 15’2” long and 6’7” wide it still has comfortable seating for five.

Plus, the M15 is built on Bayliner’s M-hull design. That maximizes stability, a critical factor when it comes to the comfort and security of you, your family, and your guests. On top of that, the package length is 17’5” so the M15 will fit in virtually any garage in America.

Visit Bayliner to learn more.

Chaparral 230 Suncoast

2. Chaparral 230 Suncoast

With a sticker price of $57,595 (which includes a trailer and a Yamaha F200 four-stroke outboard), the Chaparral 230 Suncoast delivers everything you could hope for from not only a deck boat, but also a watersports boat , a day cruiser , and a bowrider. That makes it like three boats in one, so for around $20K per boat, what’s not to like?

Plus, this is about as competent a deck boat as you’re likely to find, with almost 23 feet of LOA and the ability to take a dozen people aboard. Sports features include in-deck ski/wakeboard stowage and an optional arch with an elevated tow bit; cruising complements range from an enclosed head to built-in and carry-on coolers; and bowrider-like perks incorporate forward seating with integrated cupholders and stereo speakers, a folding center windshield, and a bow-mounted telescopic boarding ladder for easy visits to the beach.

Visit Chaparral Boats to learn more.

Four Winns HD1

3. Four Winns HD1

With a starting price of $36,951 the Four Winns HD1 is more affordable than many outboard-powered options but this boat comes with a standard MerCruiser 4.5L 200 HP stern drive under the hood. That brings with it advantages like a huge aft sunpad, and a full-beam swim platform that no deck boat with an outboard can match.

Yet this rig still provides as much seating and interior room as any of this size, has plenty of watersports get-up-and-go with that potent powerplant, and is still easy to trailer (and comes with a custom-matched single-axel trailer with brakes).

Visit Four Winns to learn more.

Glastron GTD 180

4. Glastron GTD 180

If what you’re after is maximum seating and elbow room for the LOA, you’ll find that the Glastron GTD 180 has a unique appeal. Rather than utilizing the common split windshield layout, this boat has a single console to starboard. Seating runs along the transom, the goes forward and up the port side uninterrupted until reaching the bow. And there’s even more seating up there, wrapping around in front of the helm station.

In fact, there’s more than enough seating for the entire crew even with the boat’s maximum capacity of 10 aboard. Yet pricing for the GTD 180 is eminently reasonable, starting at $28,506 with the standard Mercury 90 HP FourStroke and a single-axel trailer with submersible LED lights and a swing-away tongue.

Visit Glastron to learn more.

Hurricane Center Console 21 OB

5. Hurricane Center Console 21 OB

Hurricane is known for building multiple model lines of deck boats, but the Center Console 21 OB stands out as one of the few deck boats on the water that’s designed for serious anglers. With a 115-horsepower outboard on the transom you can get it for less than $50K, or up the ante to just over $50K and get a 150 HP powerplant. Either way this boat will likely cost less than the tow vehicle that pulls it to the boat ramp.

And once you get there, you’ll enjoy some serious angling action thanks to the center console design’s 360-degree fishability. Other fishy perks include twin (30- and 12-gallon) livewells, an aft deck with seating that converts into an elevated casting platform, gunwale and under-gunwale rodholders, and fishboxes in the deck.

Visit Hurricane to learn more.

NauticStar 193SC

6. NauticStar 193SC

In many cases you may have to sacrifice some performance to attain affordability, but that is most certainly not the case with the NauticStar 193SC . Its $42,907 MSRP includes a 115 HP powerplant that takes this boat up over the 40 MPH mark at top-end, and provides a cruise of around 30 MPH.

Also unusual for deck boats in this size range, the 193SC has a mini-galley with a freshwater sink and stowage, to go along with the onboard 25-quart cooler. The boat can be semi-customized for the way you want to use it, too, with options for a livewell for anglers, a ski pylon and transom shower for watersports fans, and a table or bow filler for folks who just plan to kick back and relax.

Visit NauticStar to learn more.

PlayCraft FX4 Fishdeck 20

7. PlayCraft FX4 Fishdeck 20

A unique offering among the deck boat crowd is the PlayCraft FX4 Fishdeck 20 , which has the hull of a fiberglass deck boat but a topsides very much like a pontoon boat . The aluminum fence with baked-enamel painted panels, rotomolded furniture bases, and woven vinyl flooring might even make you think there are pontoons under this hull—right up until you hit the throttle.

Then, you’ll discover the solid, seaworthy feel of the fiberglass monohull underfoot. And while PlayCraft doesn’t publish MSRP numbers, if you look at advertised listings for this model you’ll see plenty on offer that cost less than most new cars.

Visit Play Craft Boats to learn more.

Starcraft SVX 191 OB

8. Starcraft SVX 191 OB

You can park a new Starcraft SVX 191 OB with a Mercury 115 HP FourStroke on the transom in your garage for $36,819—which means your eminently affordable monthly boat payment will most likely be well below the payment you make on your boring land vehicle.

Beyond affordability, what we really like about this model is that it enjoys a wide-open floorplan with seating ringing the interior, and stowage area is molded into the port side, providing backrests that effectively turn the seats on either side into loungers. We also love that Starcraft puts EVA Soft Touch matts on both bow and stern swim platforms.

Visit Starcraft to learn more.

Stingray 172SC Deck Boat

9. Stingray 172SC Deck Boat

Starting at an MSRP of just $24,345 with a Suzuki DF70 four-stroke outboard, the Stingray 172SC Deck Boat is one of the most affordable boats in the mix. But don’t let the small price tag nor the boat’s relatively small size fool you into thinking it isn’t well-equipped.

The base model includes Stingray’s Convenience Package (with a 25-quart removable cooler, an Italian steering wheel, a tinted windscreen, and a Fusion RA-55 stereo system), vinyl seat cushions with Nano-Block stain resistance, dual USB ports, a 12-V outlet, backlighted helm instruments, and a telescopic ladder on the swim platform.

Visit Stingray Boats to learn more.

Tahoe 1950

10. Tahoe 1950

Here’s what we love about the Tahoe 1950 , other than its $37,090 “No Haggle No Hassle” national price tag: it’s not just a deck boat, it’s a complete deck boat package. Hitch up the trailer, fill up the fuel tank so you can feed the Mercury 115 HP outboard its oats, and hit the lake. The boat’s standard items list includes multi-tasking accessories ranging from livewells for fishing to tow pylons for watersports, and you don’t have to pay extra for many of the upgrades other manufacturer charge extra for.

The hardware is all stainless-steel for saltwater use, the stock outboard is a Pro XS Command Thrust model, and while Tahoe could certainly get away with including a single-axel trailer they instead package this deal with tandem axel trailer with Galvashield corrosion protection, a spare tire, a fold-away tongue, submersible LED lights, safety cables, and brakes on both axels.

You say you don’t need a trailer? Fine, that brings the No Haggle No Hassle deal down to $33,695. But if you ask us, the ability to explore unrestricted horizons on a complete and affordable package like this is just too good to resist.

Visit Tahoe to learn more.

Sea Ray SDX 290

Bonus Boat: Sea Ray SDX 290

We’re not about to argue that a $157,138 MSRP would be considered “most affordable” by the average boater, but if your standard of living rates it and you want a very big, very plush, very modern deck boat, the Sea Ray SDX 290 will be of interest.

One could easily argue it’s the queen of the deck boat fleet, with Luxurious aft-facing lounges on the stern, bow seats that count as loungers, and top speeds in the 50 MPH range with a pair of 250 HP Mercury Verados on the transom. As one might guess you can get this boat outfitted with uber-cool features, too, like an electric grill in the cockpit, a refrigerator, and even an onboard air compressor for blowing up the kid’s tow-toys.

Best Deck Boat Brands: A Guide to On-Water Adventures

30th oct 2023 by samantha wilson.

Rightboat logo

Deck boats are one of the most versatile types of small- to mid-sized boats on the market, offering great fun, performance, and most importantly maximum interior volume for their size. Some are not designed for choppy seas, but when it comes to their capabilities for fishing, watersports, and cruising, they’re tough to beat as all-rounders, especially on lakes and relatively protected waterways (check out our guide to the most popular types of lake boats ). While deck boats and bowriders have many similarities, the wider bow and expanded bow cockpit of the deck boat—allowing for more seating—gives them their characteristic appearance. So what makes a good deck boat and which are the best brands? Let’s take a look.

Starcraft SVX OB CC, Starcraft Marine photo.

The Best Deck Boats: What to Look For

Some describe a deck boat as a bowrider that carries an expanded beam all the way forward to create a wider deck and accommodate more seating. And that’s all true. But there are more characteristics that define a deck boat, and ones to look out for when you consider buying one:

  • Design: When it comes to hull shape there is no one type of hull on a deck boat. Some have a deep-V hull, others use a tri-hull, and a few have unique hull designs. There are also some with catamaran hulls that allow for a smoother ride in choppy seas.
  • Size: Deck boats often range from around 18 feet to 26 feet long, although there’s no hard and fast rule on that. With their extended bow creating more seating, they offer lots of space to take everyone out for a day on the water, whether that’s family or friends.
  • Versatility: A good deck boat will allow you the option to do almost anything you choose for a day on the lake. They’re perfectly suited to fishing expeditions, with lots of storage and room for gear. They’re powerful enough to tow waterskiers and tubers. And they have lots of room for sunbathing, swimming, and cruising. If watersports are on your list of priorities, then make sure you invest in a boat with a meaty engine and a tow bit or watersports tower.

What Is the Difference Between a Deck Boat and a Pontoon Boat?

While used similarly, the main difference between a deck boat and a pontoon is that the pontoon boat is built on a pair of pontoons, whereas the deck boat has a more conventional hull design. Many deck boats are fiberglass, which usually means they have a smoother ride in choppier waters and are slightly more responsive. But some deck boats are made with aluminum hulls, too.

What Is the Difference Between a Deck Boat and a Speedboat?

Speedboats are designed for, well, speed. As such they have a narrower bow to reduce drag and offer better aerodynamics. In contrast, the deck boat has a wide, square-shaped bow that creates that characteristic extra seating and deck space. The result is that a deck boat will usually be rigged with less power, have less speed and acceleration, and the handling won’t be as refined as in a speedboat. What they do offer over their speedier cousins, however, is interior space, versatility, and comfort.

What Is the Difference Between a Deck Boat and a Bowrider?

The differences between a deck boat and a bowrider are often more difficult to see, and in fact the two types of boats function in very similar ways; as runabouts, cruisers, for watersports, and fishing. The main difference is again that wider bow of the deck boat versus the more pointed bow of the bowrider. Because of hull design some bowriders are likely to perform slightly better at speed, but the deck boat always offers more space for the length.

Deck Boats for Families

Deck boats are one of the best family boats out there, slotting perfectly into that space between a pontoon boat and a sports boat. They offer tons of fun for all ages, whether it’s cruising, fishing, or watersports. Towing an inflatable, lounging on the sun deck, swimming off the swim platform, or listening to music and reading a book are all possible on a deck boat. Features to consider when buying a family deck boat are a good Bimini top for plenty of shade, a swim platform with ladder, and enough power for whatever watersports you’re planning on doing, now or down the line when the kids are bigger.

Some of the best deck boat brands for families include:

  • Starcraft: One of the top manufacturers of deck boats in the United States, Starcraft makes a number of excellent family-friendly boats. They’re great all-rounders, with high performance, a range of sizes, loads of extras like watersports towers and fishing gear, quick-release Biminis, and a stylish design. Choose a model with a deep and spacious cockpit, which is perfect for small kids, for added safety. Starcraft also builds one of the few deck boats (the MVX Surf) designed specifically for wake surfing. Starcraft boats for sale
  • Hurricane: The highly customizable Hurricane deck boats are a top choice for families wanting a versatile and fun lake boat. Ranging between 18 and 26 feet in length, and with a choice of inboard or outboard engines—as well as different layouts, finishes, and extras—their SunDeck models are a top of the range choice for families who want a go-anywhere, do-anything luxury boat. Deck Boats for Fishing

Fishing often ranks top of the list when it comes to activities enjoyed on a deck boat, and although they’re far from pure fishing boats, they do offer a lot more of the space and comfort that you often forfeit on a dedicated fishing machine. But for those who plan to do a fair bit of fishing, it makes sense to look out for a deck boat brand with a strong fishing ethos and all the gear you’ll need like rod holders, a livewell, and lots of storage. Some of the best deck boats for fishing include:

  • Princecraft : Princecraft builds a deck boat model line called the Ventura, which is designed to be rigged for fishing, ranging from the basics to advanced features. Items like the livewell, a rod box, and multiple fishing-seat-base-mount locations are all included as standard equipment. But you can also have the boat rigged with a bow-mount electric trolling motor, track-mounted rod holders and storage systems, and Lowrance or Humminbird fishing electronics. Princecraft boats for sale
  • Tahoe : The Tahoe lineup of deckboats is designed to straddle the line between sporty and fishy. Items like the swim ladders, stereo, and ski tow pylon come standard (and a wakeboard tower with board racks is an option), as is fishing rod stowage. Then Tahoe offers a dedicated “fishing package,” which gets you the rod holders, electric trolling motor, tackle stowage, and a fishfinder. They also offer a rare center console deck boat, which places even more emphasis on angling. Tahoe boats for sale

Deck Boats for Watersports

Infuse bucket loads of fun into your day on the lake by offering waterskiing or wakeboarding to your family or friends, or even just tubing for the kids. With enough horsepower to get a real move on, good maneuverability, and a sturdy tower, a deck boat promises plenty of adrenaline and good times. Some of the best deck boats for watersports include:

  • Sea Ray: Sea Ray’s sporty and stylish range of SDX deck boats all come with a dose of watersports ability, and all of the 25- to 29-foot models can be equipped with an impressive suite of watersports options. The folding watersports towers offer excellent waterskiing and wakeboarding positioning, and there are huge transom staging seats with hidden storage for accessing your gear. Combine this with reclining, aft-facing loungers, a wet bar, and a deep V hull for a smooth ride, and you’ve got a watersports boat that will be the envy of all. Sea Ray boats for sale
  • Crownline: The hybrid deck boats being built at Crownline are seriously high end and offer an impressive list of features and extras as well as being fantastic for watersports. With a whole suite of custom options including watersports towers, they make for the perfect lake boat for the whole family. With huge swim platforms, loads of storage, wide sun shades, and on larger models even a small head, they offer lots of comforts to make the whole experience feel like you’re on a sporty superyacht. Deck Boats for the Money

The price spectrum of deck boats is vast, from simple models to luxurious options with hand-stitched leather upholstery and huge sunpads. It goes without saying that the more features you add in, the more the price goes up. Having said that there are some excellent deals to be found and while deck boats in general don’t come cheap, here are some of the best deck boat brands for the money:

  • Bayliner: One of the builders who offers a hull designed specifically for deck boats is Bayliner, with their M series of 15- to 19-foot platforms built on a unique running surface with an M-shape. It combines some attributes of a V-hull with others of a tri-hull, which maximizes stability yet still rides smoothly in a chop. Bayliner’s larger 19’7” to 21’7” deck boats (the DX series) ride on more of a standard V-hull hullform. In all of these cases, however, Bayliner undercuts the competition’s pricing. In fact, with a base MSRP of under $18,000, the M15 is one of the least expensive complete boat-motor-trailer deck boat packages around. Bayliner boats for sale
  • Stingray: With a lineup of relatively small deck boats (17’3” to 21’11”), Stingray delivers a lot of bang for the buck. Despite posting low prices as compared to most brands, their models deliver perks like Bimini tops, integrated and removable coolers, Fusion stereos, USB ports at the helm, livewells, and fishing rod holders, all as stock features. The base boats are far from stripped, yet have price tags that are close to or under those of many other manufacturer’s base models. Stingray boats for sale

Stingray 182SC

Of course, choosing the best deck boat brands from the many out these is a bit subjective, and a different make or model may well prove ideal for you and your family. One thing is for sure, however; once you choose that new deck boat, every member of the family is about to have a whole lot more fun.

Finding The Best Deck Boat

top deck of a yacht

Table of Contents

Last Updated on May 19, 2022 by Boatsetter Team

If you’re someone who lives for the pleasure of boating and the feeling of the wind in your face as you zip around your lake, chances are you’re not in the market for a pontoon or little fishing boat. You’re looking for something that has enough power to take your friends out skiing, wakeboarding, or tubing while still providing plenty of space to hang out and go for a swim. What you’re looking for is a deck boat.

What is a Deck Boat?

deck boats

A deck boat earns its name from having a very large deck space. It has the most deck space you can find on a recreational boat, rivaled only by  pontoon boats . They’re designed for entertainment and sports purposes and usually come equipped with appropriate accessories. The large open spaces allow you to take a decent amount of passengers out on the water.

If you’re someone who appreciates fast, agile vessels, you’ll appreciate the deck boat. Their hulls are designed to add extra speed; their v-shaped hulls are pointed and easily cut through wake and waves. Also, their motors will generally be more powerful than your typical pontoon boat or flatboat.

While deck layouts vary between brands and models, most deck boats hold most of their entertainment features near the front of the boat. Features of a deck boat usually include excellent sound systems, board racks, and swim platforms. The more luxurious models will have features like refrigerators and even vanities.

Deck boats are also perfect for boaters who are more sports-minded. Many come specifically customized with features to create the perfect skiing, wakeboarding, or tubing experience. These sport features include things like full ballast systems and surf tabs.

Some deck boats are even made with fishers in mind. They’ll have extra accessories just for the occasion, such as livewells, fishing seats, and rod holders. Because of the variety of roles deck boats can fill, they’re usually considered to be “jack of all trades” boats.

Features of the Best Deck Boats

The features of a deck boat depend on who is going to use it and for what purpose. Not every deck boat will be the same, so you must figure out what matters to you as you peruse the different brands and models.

That being said, we can give some pointers as to what things are on the best deck boats for certain activities.

Leisure/Recreation:

Starting with deck boats that are intended to take family and friends out for a ride, or trip to a swimming hole, you should look for any features that can make your cruise enjoyable. We’d especially pay attention to any deck boats that come with a  marine sound system  (especially Bluetooth), plenty of cupholders, large enough space, a swim platform, and even a table.

Water Sports:

For anyone looking for a boat that’s good for skiing, wakeboarding, and other watersports, you’ll need to look for a few things. First of all, you’ll need a good enough motor to provide the towing power. Luckily, many deck boats come with such motors.

As for accessories, you should keep an eye out for anything that would add convenience and create a better water sports experience for your passengers. Surf controls, ballasts, and transom showers are perfect for these sorts of activities.

Fishing:

There isn’t too much to discuss when it comes to deck boats specifically for fishing. You should keep an eye for smaller, more agile models that come with plenty of storage space, livewells, and rod holders.

Example of the Best Deck Boat – Hurricane SunDeck OB

Pinning down a single deck boat that is the best on the market is a difficult task. There are so many different brands and models that can fulfill many different roles. Unfortunately, there’s no one model of boat that includes everything. However, we can still provide an example of what is undoubtedly one of the best deck boats out there, the Sundeck OB by Hurricane.

The Sundeck OB is an amazing deck boat with lots of different models, so you can choose the one that best fits your needs. They have smaller models around 19 feet all the way up to yacht-certified models over 26 feet long! Each model comes with plenty of features that will certainly satisfy all your needs for an enjoyable voyage.

For this particular example, we took a look at the 187 model. This model definitely provides the most bang for your buck without sacrificing any features.

Even for a boat that is a smaller model, the Sundeck 187 OB provided plenty of space. Even when we had the maximum number of people on it, it wont feel overcrowded. And, for those wondering, you can fit up to ten people in this very spacious deck boat. It’s excellent for large families or friendly gatherings.

The upholstery and seating on this boat were very high-quality. The front of the boat has a special feature known as a sunpad, which is essentially a sunbathing area. It turns the front deck of the boat into one big, very comfortable cushion. The spacious areas are a joy to lounge around in, not to mention that it has a very nice speaker system.

This boat also has plenty of storage space. There is a locker in the back of the ship, stowage under the windshield cowl on either side and, most importantly, a 25-quart cooler! Additionally, there is a wet locker on the port side if you need a place to store wet clothes.

You can get a few other things, leisure-wise, that are included in different packages when you buy the boat. These features include snap-in carpeting, removable mini-dining tables, and some other electronics. These minor additions should only be bought if you want the most luxurious experience with your boat .

Driving  this boat is an excellent experience. Deck boats are already swift and easy to maneuver because of their hull design, but because this model is so much lighter than the others, it makes it that much easier to control . You’ll be able to carve your way through tight turns and take lightning-fast trips around the lake in this boat. If you’re a driver that loves a fast boat, you’ll get plenty of enjoyment out of this one.

For water sports enthusiasts, this boat comes with a ski tow line . An optional package for the boat includes a wakeboard tower, board racks, and a bimini top.

For anglers, there is a package just for you. It only comes with an optional fishing seat as well as a trolling motor . Sadly, this boat doesn’t come with any other fishing features such as rod holders, but the optional package is enough for casual fishers.

Something we were surprised to see that wasn’t immediately included with the boat was some sort of swim platform. It comes with a ladder, but a swim platform had to be purchased in an extra optional package.

With the advancements in boat design and technology, 2024's deck boats offer numerous customization options, state-of-the-art engine performance, and an array of comfort and accessibility features.

  • The 2024 market offers a wide range of models and features to choose from.
  • Advanced engine performance and customization options set modern deck boats apart.

Understanding Deck Boats

History and Evolution of Deck Boats

Deck boats have come a long way since they first emerged in the boating scene. They were initially designed to combine the speed and agility of a bowrider with the space and capacity of a pontoon boat, which made them popular among families and watersports enthusiasts.

Over the years, well-known manufacturers like Hurricane , Bayliner , and Starcraft have contributed to the evolution of deck boats , now offering an array of models with different features , seating arrangements, and power options.

Deck Boat Anatomy: Understanding the Basics

Size and Versatility

Deck boats are known for their versatility and come in various lengths (LOA) providing more space and seating arrangements compared to other boat types.

The sizes range from small to medium-sized vessels that can accommodate groups of different sizes. Their flat and open deck style makes them perfect for entertaining, sunbathing , fishing, and water sports.

Hull Design and Power

One of the distinguishing aspects of deck boats is their unique hull design. They typically have a modified V-hull or catamaran-style hull, which provides a smooth ride, excellent stability, and better fuel efficiency.

When it comes to power, deck boats can have either an outboard motor, stern drive, or jet drive, depending on the make and model. The choice depends on the desired speed, acceleration, and maneuverability for various water conditions.

Seating and Elements

Deck boat seating is designed to be spacious and comfortable. The boats usually have a bow-to-stern cockpit arrangement , which ensures ample room for lounging and socializing.

In most models, the primary entertainment area is located at the bow, leaving enough space for activities and equipment storage at the stern.

A table showing key aspects of deck boats:

Types of Deck Boats

Aluminum Vs. Fiberglass

When choosing a deck boat, one of the crucial decisions is selecting between aluminum and fiberglass as the primary material.

Aluminum deck boats are known for their lightweight construction and exceptional durability. They are easier to maintain and typically have a lower initial cost. However, they might not offer the same level of comfort as fiberglass boats.

On the other hand, fiberglass deck boats provide a smoother ride in rough waters and a more luxurious aesthetic. Due to this, they may be more expensive, both upfront and in terms of maintenance.

MaterialProsCons
AluminumLightweight, durable, low initial cost, easy to maintainLess comfortable, not as smooth in rough waters
FiberglassSmooth ride, luxurious aesthetic, better comfortHigher initial cost, more maintenance required

Pontoon Deck Boats

Pontoon deck boats are a popular choice among boating enthusiasts as they offer increased stability and spaciousness.

These boats feature two or more pontoons, providing a large and flat deck area suitable for entertaining, fishing, or relaxing. They offer plenty of seating and can accommodate a significant number of passengers.

Additionally, pontoon deck boats are known for their stability on the water, making them ideal for enjoying a day out with family or friends.

However, it is important to consider that pontoon deck boats generally have a shallow V-hull, which might not offer the same level of performance and maneuverability as other deck boat types.

Performance-focused Deck Boats

For those who seek a more thrilling boating experience, performance-focused deck boats should be taken into consideration.

These boats are designed for high-speed cruises and agile handling. Featuring a deep V-hull, they cut through the water smoothly and efficiently while maintaining stability.

Performance-focused deck boats may also come equipped with powerful engines, allowing them to reach impressive speeds. However, potential trade-offs for this enhanced performance include reduced fuel efficiency and increased noise levels.

Deck Boat Buying Guide

Identifying Your Boating Needs

Before beginning your search for the perfect deck boat , it's important to identify your boating needs.

Consider the planned activities for your boat, such as fishing, watersports, or leisurely cruises. Next, assess the size and range required, bearing in mind the number of passengers, storage capacity, and distance you plan to travel.

Don't forget to consider factors like fuel efficiency and required maintenance.

Evaluating Deck Boat Brands

There are several reputable deck boat manufacturers on the market offering a wide range of boats to suit different needs. A few of the top brands include:

  • Hurricane: Known for their versatile and aesthetically pleasing designs, Hurricane offers a wide range of deck boats with various sizes and capacities.
  • Sea Ray : Sea Ray boats are popular for their luxury features and impressive performance, making them a top choice for boating enthusiasts.
  • Starcraft: This brand offers a variety of affordable and high-quality deck boats with excellent design and functionality.
  • Four Winns: With a focus on innovative design and exceptional performance, Four Winns boats cater to a broad range of boating preferences.

It's crucial to evaluate each brand, reading reviews from current boat owners and comparing available models and features to determine which brand best meets your specific boating needs.

Investment Considerations for Buyers

When buying a deck boat, it's essential to assess your investment and determine if it's a sound financial decision. Keep the following factors in mind:

  • Initial Purchase Price: Compare the costs of similar deck boats from various brands, ensuring that you get the best value for your money.
  • Maintenance and Repair Costs: Research the typical costs associated with maintaining and repairing the boat model you're considering.
  • Insurance and Registration: Factor in the cost of insurance, registration, and other legal requirements necessary for owning and operating your boat.
  • Fuel Efficiency: Choose a deck boat with good fuel efficiency to help lower operating costs and mitigate potential environmental impacts.
  • Resale Value: Consider how well the chosen model and brand maintain their value, as this can impact the future resale potential.

Key Features of Modern Deck Boats

Seating and Comfort

One of the most notable features of modern deck boats is their seating and comfort . Deck boats have evolved to incorporate a variety of amenities that cater to a range of water activities, providing a comfortable and enjoyable experience for both anglers and leisure boaters.

For instance, comfortable seating arrangements often include plush quilted upholstery with marine-grade memory foam for maximum comfort and relaxation.

Most deck boats offer a high level of seating customization, with options ranging from spacious aft-facing loungers to dedicated fishing spots.

A key aspect of deck boat design is maximizing seating capacity without compromising space for moving around. In some models, the main entertainment and lounging area is moved to the bow, allowing for more social spaces and improved utilization of the boat's floor plan.

Both casual boaters and avid anglers can appreciate the useful storage spaces found in modern deck boats.

Dedicated compartments for rod holders, live wells, fish boxes, and storage cater to the needs of fishing enthusiasts, while general storage areas provide room for personal belongings, water sports equipment, and more.

Alongside the seating aspects and storage, deck boats also boast impressive marine electronics and entertainment options.

Many boats come standard with sophisticated GPS navigation systems, fish finders, and high-quality stereo systems for enjoying music and other audio entertainment while out on the water.

To shield passengers from the sun and elements, modern deck boats often include a Bimini top , which provides ample shade without obstructing views or impeding access to other boat features.

Some models also come with a convenient wet bar for onboard snacks and drinks, making it easy to host social gatherings or family outings.

In terms of onboard facilities, many deck boats come equipped with a head , providing essential restroom functionality for those longer excursions.

Engine Types and Performance

Outboard Vs. Sterndrive

Deck boats come with two main types of engines: outboard and sterndrive .

Outboard engines , also known as outboard motors, are mounted on the outside of the boat, while sterndrive engines are positioned internally and connected to a drive on the boat's exterior.

Outboard engines are generally more lightweight and easier to maintain compared to sterndrive engines. Examples of outboard engines in deck boats include Yamaha and Rotax S150 .

Sterndrive engines, on the other hand, offer better handling and speed. An example of a high-performance sterndrive deck boat is the Eliminator 28 Fundeck , which can reach speeds of up to 120mph.

Some benefits of each engine type:

  • Lightweight
  • Easier maintenance
  • Quieter operation
  • Better handling and control at high speeds
  • Higher top speed
  • More streamlined design

Fuel Efficiency and Range

The fuel efficiency and range of a deck boat depend on its engine type and power, as well as the boat's overall weight and design.

Deck Boat Engine TypeAverage Fuel Capacity (gallons)Estimated Range (miles)
Outboard50-80100-200
Sterndrive60-10080-150

Generally, outboard engines are more fuel-efficient than sterndrive engines, often making them the preferred choice for those looking to save on fuel costs.

The fuel capacity of an outboard deck boat typically ranges from 50 to 80 gallons, with an estimated range between 100 and 200 miles.

Sterndrive deck boats, although boasting higher speeds, often have larger fuel capacities (60-100 gallons) but cover shorter ranges, between 80 and 150 miles.

Deck Boat for Water Sports

Features for Wakeboarding and Tubing

Deck boats are an ideal choice for water sports enthusiasts. They offer spacious layouts and easily accommodate wakeboarding, tubing, and skiing activities.

One of the most popular deck boats for water sports is the Hurricane Sundeck Sport 201 , which boasts versatility and impressive performance, making it a top choice among boat owners who are into water sports.

Many deck boats come equipped with tow points specifically designed for towing wakeboards, tubes, and water skis.

Additionally, some models offer wakeboard towers that provide a higher attachment point for the tow ropes, enhancing the experience for riders.

The swim platform, which is typically an essential feature of deck boats, allows easy access to the water for wakeboarders and tubers.

Fishing Features on Deck Boats

Deck boats are not limited to water sports alone, as they also cater to the needs of fishing enthusiasts.

A major advantage of deck boats is their spacious design, offering ample seating comfort and large casting decks for fishing activities .

Various fishing features can be found on deck boats, such as:

  • Rod holders : These help secure fishing rods while out on the water.
  • Livewells : Integrated tanks that store live bait and your catch.
  • Tackle storage : Convenient and organized storage compartments for your fishing gear.

Some deck boat models also come with fitted fishing chairs, making the experience more comfortable and enjoyable.

The center console design allows the angler to walk around the boat when the fish decides to go under, providing an added benefit to deck boat fishing.

Deck Boat Maintenance and Safety

Routine Care and Upkeep

Proper maintenance of a deck boat is essential to ensure its longevity and optimal performance.

One of the fundamental aspects of routine care is to keep the watercraft clean regularly. Washing the boat's exterior with fresh water after each use helps in removing salt, grime, and other debris.

Additionally, a thorough cleaning of the interior flooring and seating areas maintains a hygienic environment on the boat.

Inspecting the deck hardware, railings, and cleats for any damage or corrosion is equally important.

Regularly check electrical and plumbing systems for functionality.

Undertaking periodic engine checks, changing engine oil, and examining the fuel system will ensure that the engine stays in good condition.

For deck boats that feature a cruiser or canvas enclosure, ensure proper care by cleaning the cloth and inspecting the zippers and fasteners.

Storage is also a significant aspect of maintenance, especially during the off-season.

Make sure to store the boat in a dry and well-ventilated area, reducing the chances of developing mold or mildew.

Boating Safety Essentials

Boating safety is paramount when operating any watercraft, including a deck boat.

Ensuring that there are adequate life jackets for each passenger on board is crucial.

Maintaining safety equipment such as fire extinguishers, first aid kits, and signaling devices ensures preparedness for any emergencies.

Installing a reliable bilge pump and high water alarm can aid in avoiding situations where the boat is in danger of sinking.

Before launching a deck boat, it's important to review its dry weight and carrying capacity. Overloading can result in reduced stability and control.

Thoroughly acquainting yourself with the boat's controls, navigation, and operation will contribute to overall safety on the water.

Some of the top deck boat brands for 2024 include Hurricane, Sea Ray, and Tahoe . Familiarize yourself with their specific safety features and operations as each brand may have different specifications.

Comfort and Accessibility Features

Ample Seating Areas

Deck boats are known for their spaciousness, which is why they are a popular choice for those who prioritize comfort and entertaining guests.

Many top brands, such as Hurricane and Sea Ray , offer models with ample seating areas for the ultimate lounging experience.

Comfortable seating is a key feature of these boats. Often, you will find U-shaped or L-shaped seating arrangements that can accommodate large groups, making it perfect for socializing.

Additionally, many deck boats have flip-up or swivel captain's chairs near the helm, providing a comfortable and easily adjustable seating option for the driver.

Swim Platforms and Access

Swim platforms are another notable feature of deck boats. They make it convenient for passengers to easily enter and exit the water. These platforms are often located at the stern of the boat and can be integrated or extended depending on the model and brand.

Some deck boats like those from Tahoe and Starcraft even offer multiple swim platforms. This further enhances the accessibility and functionality of the boat.

A well-designed swim platform not only provides easy access to the water but also includes additional features such as a ladder, non-slip surface, and sometimes even storage compartments for watersports gear. These swim platforms are an essential element for those looking to spend their time on the water enjoying activities like swimming, snorkeling, or water skiing.

Advanced Features and Customizations

Navigation and Electronic Upgrades

Deck boats in 2024 are integrating new innovative marine electronics making boating experiences much more enjoyable and stress-free. Many top brands offer navigation systems, such as Humminbird, which provide boaters with accurate GPS positioning and detailed charting information to help guide their trips.

These electronic upgrades are designed to increase user-friendliness and streamline the navigation process. Some notable features include:

  • High-resolution displays: Offer clear and detailed maps, easy-to-read data, and customizable layouts.
  • Integrated GPS: Provides precise location tracking and ensures safe travels by avoiding potential hazards.
  • Sonar technology: Allows boaters to locate fish and underwater structures, as well as monitor depth levels.
  • Autopilot systems: Enable boaters to set a predetermined course, maintaining consistency and facilitating hands-free navigation.

These advanced technologies not only improve functionality but contribute to the overall safety and enjoyment of your time spent on the water.

Customizing Your Deck Boat for Luxury

When it comes to customizing your deck boat, the options for achieving a luxurious atmosphere are nearly endless. In 2024, many deck boat manufacturers are offering luxurious design options and high-quality amenities to cater to the sophisticated tastes of their clientele. Some potential luxury customizations include:

  • Custom upholstery: High-quality materials, intricate stitching, and plush padding can create a lavish seating experience.
  • Entertainment systems: Incorporating audio-visual equipment such as high-definition screens, marine-grade speakers, and wireless connectivity options can create a luxurious entertainment experience onboard.
  • Lighting: Advanced LED lighting systems can be customized to set the desired ambiance and mood while also enhancing safety during night navigation.
  • Onboard amenities: Adding gourmet galleys, deluxe wet bars, and comfortable lounging areas will ensure that you and your guests want for nothing while relaxing on your deck boat.

By investing in high-quality electronics and luxury customizations, boaters can create an upscale environment that elevates their deck boat experience. 6. Comfort and Convenience:  Plenty of seating options, shade provisions, built-in cooler or wet bar are all aspects that ensure comfort for all on board.

What are the benefits of owning a deck boat for fishing?

There are many benefits to owning a deck boat for fishing. First, they provide ample space for all of your gear. This is especially important if you plan fishing with multiple people, as you’ll need enough room for everyone’s gear. Additionally, deck boats typically have more storage than other fishing boats, so you can easily store all your tackle and bait. Finally, deck boats usually have a higher freeboard than other fishing boats, which means they’re more stable and less likely to capsize in rough waters.

What features should I look for when choosing a deck boat for fishing?

When choosing a deck boat for fishing, there are several features you should look for to ensure you get the best possible experience. First, consider the size of the boat and how many people it can accommodate. You’ll also want to consider the boat’s storage capacity and whether it has features like a Livewell or fishfinder. Additionally, pay attention to the boat’s hull design and ensure it can provide a smooth ride in rough waters.

What are hull designs available in a deck boat?

Two types of hull designs are available in a deck boat: sport-designed and fishing-designed.

The sport-designed hulls are designed to be faster and more agile than an average pontoon boat, offering better speed and performance. They feature many seats, making them ideal for large families or group activities.

The fishing-designed hulls have additional storage for fish, allowing you to make the most out of your boating experience.

What is the cost of a deck boat for fishing?

The cost of a deck boat for fishing can vary depending on the size and model. On average, you can expect to pay between $15,000 and $60,000 for a new deck boat. You may also be able to find one for cheaper if you purchase it second-hand or from a private seller.

Does a deck boat offer enough space for fishing?

Yes, a deck boat offers enough space for fishing. It provides plenty of room for rods, reels, live wells, coolers, and friends. It also has removable flooring so you can focus on landing the perfect fish without worrying about ruining expensive carpet or decking.

A deck boat is typically wider than other boats, providing more interior space. It is ideal for sport fishing as there are fewer upright structures to get hung up on, and it has plenty of room for people and gear. The low-fuss interior makes it perfect for hosting fishing trips with friends or enjoying quiet time alone if needed.

What type of outboard engine is best for a deck boat?

There is no definitive answer to this question as it depends on a number of factors, such as the size and weight of the boat, the type of fishing you plan to do, and your budget. However, we can narrow it down to a few potential options.

If you are looking for a powerful and efficient outboard engine, then a four-stroke engine is a good option. You should also consider the size of the boat and how many people you plan to fish with.

What are the advantages of a pontoon boat compared to a deck boat?

Both pontoon and deck boats offer lots of space, making them ideal for spending time with friends and family. Both kinds of boats are naturally inclined towards water activities due to their design.

The main difference between a pontoon boat and a deck boat is that the latter has a V-shaped hull, which increases speed and maintains stability, while the former does not have this feature. Additionally, deck boats tend to be more expensive than pontoon boats due to their additional features, such as pop-up changing areas or ski tow bars.

What are the best accessories for a deck boat for fishing?

There are a few essential accessories that every deck boat for fishing should have. Firstly, a good quality fish finder will help you locate the best spots to drop your line. A GPS is also useful for charting your course and keeping track of your progress. Additionally, a live well is essential for keeping your catch fresh and healthy. Finally, a good set of fishing tackle will help you land the big one.

Does a deck boat offer good maneuverability for fishing?

Yes, a deck boat offers excellent maneuverability for fishing. The boat’s sleek design makes navigating inlets, bayous, and other tricky waterways easier, while the wide bow allows for maximum interior space for rods, reels, live wells, and coolers. Additionally, many deck boats have removable flooring, ensuring that expensive carpets or decking will not be ruined during use. Furthermore, most deck boats have powerful motors that can handle nuanced maneuvers, making them ideally suited for sport fishing opportunities.

Does a deck boat come with a warranty?

A deck boat typically comes with a warranty ranging from one year to six years. The warranty length depends on the manufacturer and the quality of the boat. It is essential to ask questions about the warranty before signing a sale contract so you can understand exactly what it covers and for how long.

Some manufacturers may not offer a warranty on their deck boats, so it is up to you as the buyer to address any potential problems with your boat before you take possession of it. Additionally, some manufacturers may only provide limited coverage for certain components or parts of their boats while excluding others entirely from their warranties. It is crucial that you research thoroughly before making any purchase decision so that you know exactly what kind of coverage you are getting with your new boat’s warranty plan.

How to Choose the Best Deck Boats – Buyer’s Guide

Buying a boat isn’t the sort of thing you do every other day. You don’t buy a boat to sell it after a year. It’s an investment you’re going to have for a long time, maybe even a lifetime.

So, you need to take your time and choose the best one for your budget and needs. Below are some important factors to consider when choosing the best deck boats to buy.

Research Boat Dealers

When buying a deck boat, you want to make sure that you’re getting one from a reputable manufacturer. Any of the brands detailed in this review would be a great place to start.

Take the time to visit the official website of each of the deck boat manufacturers , explore the different models they have on offer, as well as the standard features of each of the boats. Also, check to see if they have any customization options available if you want to add any comfort and convenience features.

When you have a pretty good idea of the boat you want to buy, check if the manufacturer has any dealers in your area. Get in touch with them via a phone call or email and have them answer all the questions you might have about a particular vessel.

You want to discuss things like availability, models, customization, pricing, and even financing if that’s an option. Once you’re satisfied with everything you’ve heard, set up an appointment to go view the boat in person.

Ask All the Right Questions

Once you visit the dealership to view the boat, ensure you ask the following questions before signing the sale contract.

  • Can I get my deck boat serviced here?
  • Do you offer any winterization services for the cold season?
  • How do I get the boat once I’ve bought it? Do I have to pick it up, or will you have it delivered?
  • Is it backed by a warranty ? If so, what does it cover?
  • Can you arrange for a test drive before I buy it?
  • What’s the standard procedure if my boat needs repairs or service? Should I drop it off here, or will you have someone come pick it up?
  • How often does the boat require servicing, and how long does the process take?
  • Do I have to take care of storage myself, or is that covered under the sale?

Once they’ve answered the questions above to your satisfaction, you also want to visit a few other dealers to make sure that you’re getting the best value for your money. You might find one dealer offering something extra that the others don’t. As a rule of thumb, never settle for the first boat you like without exploring a couple more options.

Pick a Deck Boat With the Right Features

With so many shiny new boats to choose from, narrowing down your choices can be a herculean task in itself. Boats nowadays come with so many bells and whistles attached to them to entice you into purchasing them.

The best way to make a decision is by identifying the features that matter the most to you based on the activities you’ll be using the boat for, 90 percent of the time.

Deck Boats for Fishing

If you enjoy fishing, and that’s predominantly what you envision yourself doing most of the time, then it makes sense to get a deck boat that’s fully-loaded with fishing-friendly features.

It doesn’t matter how great the boat looks. If it doesn’t come with rod-holders, a live well, or ample storage to stow your fishing gear and accessories, then it’s pretty much useless to you.

Deck Boats for Entertaining

If you love hanging out with your buddies on a sunny Saturday afternoon and catching a couple of beers while jamming to your favorite tunes out on the water, then you want a boat with a sizeable deck.

It needs to have a big enough seating capacity to comfortably accommodate your posse. Features like cup holders, foldable table mount, and marine audio system are what you should be looking for in a boat.

Deck Boats for Family

If, on the other hand, you’re more of a family man or woman and are looking to buy a deck boat to spend more quality time with your spouse and kids, then you want a watercraft that can pull skis or an inner tube.

Maybe even have a sun deck with enough room to stretch out and sunbathe, and a swim platform with a step ladder you can use when swimming out in the lake or ocean. You might also want something that comes with a Bimini top to shield you from the sun on those hot days.

You could also get a deck boat that has a bit of everything. That’s okay too. Just be clear on what you intend to use the boat for and pick one with the features that support your specific activities.

Speaking of features, in an ideal world, the price wouldn’t be a factor when choosing a boat with all the bells and whistles you want it to have. The reality is – price will always be a pain-point for most people. Unless, of course, you have a ton of money to spend, in which case you can get any darn boat you like.

The one thing to keep in mind when shopping for a deck boat is – The more features and customization options it has, the higher the price point will be. That’s a fact of life.

So, while it is possible to get a deck boat with custom leather interiors, wooden finishes, state-of-the-art music system, expansive deck, customizable seating layout, fishing-friendly fittings, and anything else your heart desires, all these features come with a hefty price tag attached to them.

You also need to consider the expenses associated with running a deck boat, aside from the cost of buying it. You need to budget for:

  • Maintenance and repairs

Once you put all these costs into consideration, then, and only then, will you have a realistic picture of what the true cost of ownership is.

New vs. Used

Finally, once you have an idea of the kind of deck boat you want to get in terms of its size and features, and know how much its associated running costs will be, you now have to decide between getting a brand new fresh-off-the-factory boat or a used one.

Now, the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the word “used” is likely an old rusty run-down boat. This couldn’t be further from the truth.

Used simply means “pre-owned.” There are plenty of people selling deck boats they purchased in 2017 and 2018. Heck, you might even come across people selling 2019 vessels, although you may not get much of a price-cut since they are still pretty new.

If you’re looking to save loads of cash and get a vessel that’s good as new, you just need to go back a few years and find boats whose year of manufacture is in the 2012-2015 range. If you do get a boat that’s older than that, you may save on the initial cost of purchase, only to end up spending more money on maintenance and repairs in the long run.

If you can afford it, it’s always better to get a brand new boat. But, if you find a used one in great shape with all the swanky features you like, it beats getting a new boat at the same price. Just make sure you don’t end up buying a lemon.

Make Your Decision Count

Buying a deck boat is, no doubt, an exciting endeavor and probably one of the best investments you’ll ever make in your life. So, make it count.

Use the tips discussed in this guide to help you pick the best deck boats for your needs. The seven options reviewed are your best bet.

View The Hurricane Sundeck 187 OB XS here

Hurricane is known for producing deck boats, and one look at the 187 reveals that this model has been designed with years of expertise in mind. You’ll also notice that the options marked with an “IO” denote that they come with a sterndrive.

While several deck boat builders have switched to outboard-powered models, Hurricane offers both the 187 IO and the 187 OB (outboard version).

While current outboard deck boats have many excellent features to brag about, the 187 IO has one that none can match. That said, the 187 IO has a feature that none of them can match: the 187 IO has a feature that none of them can match.

As a result, the 187 IO A swim platform with a full beam and no large engine intruding on its area. As an added benefit, you’ll have a sizeable fold-out sun pad across the transom, perched on the engine box.

Wrap-around seating in the front and stern, a chaise lounge with a storage compartment below the passenger’s console, and a bow swim platform with a telescoping ladder make getting on and off the boat a breeze when you beach it are all features of the 187 models.

Anglers will enjoy the option of adding a fishing package (which includes fishing chairs, rod storage, and trolling motor pre-wiring) and a fishfinder for those occasions when you and the kids would instead cast a line than lounge about or pull tow-toys.

The Best Deck Boats: What To Consider

Purchasing a boat is not something you do every day. You don’t buy a boat to sell it after a year. It’s an investment that will last a long time, perhaps even a lifetime.

As a result, you should take your time and select the best option for your budget and requirements. Keep the following principles in mind when looking for the best deck boats to buy.

It Is Best To Research Boat Dealers

Choosing one from a respected manufacturer is essential when purchasing a deck boat. Any of the brands mentioned in this article would be an excellent place to begin.

Take the time to go to each deck boat manufacturer’s official website and look at the numerous models they have to offer, as well as the typical features of each boat. Also, if you wish to add any comfort or convenience features, see if they have any modification choices accessible.

Check to see whether the manufacturer has any dealers in your region after you have a decent notion of the boat you want to buy. Then, contact them by phone or email and have them answer any questions you may have regarding a specific vessel.

You should talk about availability, models, customization, cost, and even financing if it’s a possibility. Set up an appointment to see the yacht in person once you’re pleased with what you’ve heard.

Choose a Deck Boat That Has All of the Features You Want

With so many gleaming new boats to select from, narrowing down your options may be a monumental process in and of itself. Boats nowadays come with a plethora of bells and whistles to attract you into purchasing one.

The easiest method to make a selection is to figure out which characteristics are most important to you, depending on the activities you’ll be doing with the boat 90% of the time.

Budget Plays An Vital Role When Purchasing A Deck Boat

A budget would not be a consideration when selecting a yacht with all the gizmos and gadgets you desire in a perfect world when it comes to features. However, the truth is that most individuals will always be concerned about pricing.

When searching for a deck boat, bear in mind that the more features and customization possibilities it offers, the higher the price point will be. Unfortunately, that is an unavoidable truth of life.

So, while a deck boat with personalized leather interiors, timber finishes, state-of-the-art audio system, large deck, flexible seating configuration, fishing-friendly fittings may be nice to have features. However, whatever else your heart desires are conceivable, all of these luxuries come with a heavy price tag.

Ask The Correct Questions Before Buying A Deck Boat

Before signing the sale contract, make sure you ask the following questions when you visit the dealership to examine the boat.

  • Is it possible to get my deck boat repaired and serviced here?
  • Is there a warranty on it? If that’s the case, what exactly does it cover?
  • After I’ve purchased the boat, how do I obtain it? Is it necessary for me to pick it up, or will it be delivered?
  • Can you set up a test drive for me before I buy it?
  • What is the normal method for repairing or servicing my boat? Should I leave it here, or will you send someone to get it?
  • How regularly does the boat need to be serviced, and how long does it take?
  • Does the sale cover storage, or would I need to take care of it myself?

If you want to be sure that you are getting the most value from your purchase, it would be best if you meet with a few different dealers once they have answered the questions above to your satisfaction. You could find that one dealer provides a service that the others do not. As a general rule, never settle for the first boat you like without considering a few others.

There’s a lot to like about deck boats. Their hybrid design meets a growing desire among boaters for a vessel that offers both speed and spaciousness for the utmost in water fun.

These one-of-a-kind boats aren’t for everyone, but they have a lot to offer those who pick them. If you require space and speed, the deck boat should undoubtedly be on your list, and you don’t want to compromise. Take one for a spin, and you’ll be hooked in no time.

Let customers speak for us

The Chesapeake Bay Explorer Long Sleeve Tee

Love it. Constantly being asked where I got it. Always tell them.

The St Johns River Navigator Coconut Button Camp Shirt

I got the Mobile Bay one for a friend who used to shrimp the upper part of the channel, and he loved it. I like my St. John’s River mouth one too but XL is a little tight. I just need to drop a few lbs. great idea. How about the Windward Pass?

The Annapolis Navigator Coconut Button Camp Shirt

I bought the Annapolis Navigator Coconut Button Camp Shirt for my husband as a gift and he absolutely loves it! It is a great quality shirt and he gets many positive comments every time he wears it!

The Isles of Shoals Blue Mariner Coconut Button Camp Shirt

Three years ago, after the death of my wife of 29 years, I met a woman out on the Isles of Shoals, Star Island to be exact. Two years ago, she and I married (in our 70s). So, that part of the world will always have a place in my heart. Our annual outings to Star will now be enhanced with this great shirt.

Quality printing, comfortable fabric, accurate sizing. All good!

The Sanibel - Pine Island Sound Blues Long Sleeve Tee

I love it when strangers compliment my Sanibel shirt and I can proudly say, “My house is here.” Beautifully made, very comfortable, washes beautifully, and starts conversations. Great shirt.

The Cape Henlopen Long Sleeve Tee

Love this company to work with, and I plan to order from them again. I was very pleased with the shirt’s quality.

The Panama City Long Sleeve Tee

Got this shirt for hubby’s birthday last year. He’s gotten several compliments! Great shirt for the beach and boat.

The Flagler Beach Long Sleeve Tee

Love this shirt and the others I purchased for gifts

The Apponagasett to Elizabeth Islands Long Sleeve Tee

I have ordered 3 different sets of clothing and all have been a hit with my customers. I would recommend lengthening the sundress a couple of inches (2) for the ladies. This was suggested by a few women. Just an observation. But otherwise I love mine, I wear all three (regular chart color, light blue and dark blue) and love them!!

The Ocean City and Chincoteague Bay Long Sleeve Tee

I love my Assateague shirt so much and received so many compliments that I bought 2 more for Christmas gifts. Absolutely love the print, fabric, sizing (does fit a bit slim).

The San Juan Islands Long Sleeve Tee

The shirts looks great and well made. Good detail of the San Juan Island. You could probably sell a ton to the locals and tourists here.

The Isles of Shoals Coconut Button Camp Shirt

Bought this shirt for a birthday gift and it was a big hit. The recipient is neither a boater nor an aviator, but this shirt is great for someone who lives on the seacoast and has traveled to the Isles of Shoals many times. Well made, good fit, and novel concept.

The Massachusetts Coast Lightweight Hoodie Sweatshirt

I am particularly pleased with the customer service. It was easy to address the change in size that I needed for my initial purchase of a Florida long sleeve tee and I was also offered an incentive to order additional merchandise, which I did. I have yet to wear the hoodie as the weather has been a bit too warm but I know I will get lots of compliments and I wlll be sure to share your company’s information

The Stone Harbor Navigator Long Sleeve Performance Tee

My daughter bought me a shirt for my Bday…It was the wrong size..In the process of getting the right size I was able to get everyone on my Christmas list a shirt unique to the area they live in…They did not get them yet but I am sure they will be over the moon as I was when I received mine…Thanks for making my size snafu into a great gift for all my family..Barry

What really goes on below deck on the world's most glamorous superyachts

top deck of a yacht

As I scraped away with a toothpick, trying to remove the tiniest specks of dust from a grate in the salon of the superyacht, I knew this wasn't what people had in mind when they pictured life below deck.

They're likely to envy me for working in beautiful surroundings, seeing stunning sunsets and drinking €30 cocktails in the most glamorous spots from Positano to Palma.

The Channel 4 reality show Below Deck - now in its tenth series - has gained a cult following, chronicling the lives of crew members, like me, who work aboard superyachts during charter season.

Top down view of a sexy, blonde woman in bikini taking a sunbath on a boat over blue sea during summer time. Pic: Getty Images

In part, the show is pretty accurate - I'm part of a dynamic team who work hard and play hard - but there are plenty of downsides the series doesn't show. Like starting the morning shift at 6am by cleaning up cocaine residue while your guests carry on hoovering up lines around you, or panicking because you haven't got time to dust your boss's collection of Birkin bags in-between sorting their laundry, changing their bedsheets and taking them their mid-morning almond milk cappuccino.

Unsurprisingly, cleaning with toothpicks does not feature on the reality show either.

And that's before we get to sleeping in a cabin so tiny that only one person can stand in it at any given time - though after several 17-hour days on the trot you're so tired, you're fit for nothing but falling into bed.

That's the full reality of life below deck: for every glamorous moment of being invited for a sunset swim alongside your super rich hosts, there are a hundred others in which you are nothing more than a glorified skivvy-cumwaitress-cum-nanny - sometimes all at the same time.

BELOW DECK -- Pictured: Kate Chastain. Pic: Getty Images

It's one reason that, after two years of working as a stewardess on some of the world's most beautiful boats - including a month aboard the superyacht of two global celebrities - at 23, I have decided to hang up my deck shoes for good and come home.

I fell into boat life by accident. While I grew up in a middle-class family and attended private school, I was never one of the yachting crowd. The first time I realised you could make a career out of sailing was when I came across a girl on TikTok who posted beautiful pictures of sunsets from all her travels under the hashtag #yachtlife.

It looked amazing and quickly got me hooked on the idea of joining the industry.

BELOW DECK -- Pictured: Captain Lee Rosbach. Pic: Getty Images

To Mum's dismay, after university, I didn't join a teacher training course as planned, but went on a two-week course on the Isle of Wight to get my qualifications, the first a STCW certificate (Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers) followed by stewardess training.

It cost €4,500, but I figured it would be money well spent.

The course throws you in the deep end - quite literally. You're taught sea survival skills, from how to rescue someone who falls off the boat to putting life rafts in the water, as well as learning how to put out a fire and evacuate those on board.

We learned about piracy, too - it's quite common around the coasts of Africa and South America - and the procedures to go through if your boat is hijacked.

The stewardess course covered everything from laundry and housekeeping to floristry and cocktails. You might think there's not much to learn about making a bed, but guests on superyachts expect a hospital corner, with not a crease in sight.

From there we were on to silver service, how to cut cigars for guests, how to identify premium champagnes and how to care for luxury brands like Louis Vuitton, Cartier and Hermes when packing and unpacking guest suitcases. Jeans, for instance, must be folded in thirds, not quarters.

Every year, there's a big event in Antibes, one of the superyacht hotspots on the French Riviera, where 'greenies' - those who don't have any experience on a boat - turn up and try to get a job.

I wasn't sure of my chances there, competing with thousands of novices just like me. So I tried my luck in a different hunting ground and, along with a friend, flew out to Palma, Mallorca, which is another popular place for 'yachties'.

Getting work was harder than we'd anticipated. We had very little money (that €4,500 course had made sure of that), so we had to stay in a hostel, setting the alarm for 6.30am every day to go 'dock walking', as it's known canvassing for work by handing out CVs to boat crews.

Eventually, though, I was offered my first day of work, 'detail cleaning' on a luxury vessel in dry dock which had just been refurbished. For a day rate of €150 I had to meticulously clean one of the boat's two 'salons'.

BELOW DECK -- Season: 2 -- Pictured: (l-r) Kate Chastain, Eddie Lucas, Kelley Johnson, Ben Robinson, Kathleen Held, Andrew Sturby, Amy Johnson, Captain Lee Rosbach, Jennice Ontriveros. Pic: Getty Images

After four weeks of day shifts, I landed my first full-time stewarding job on a charter yacht based in the south of France.

Hired out by guests throughout the summer for about €220,000 a week, it had four guest cabins, and eight crew - myself included - who lived in five tiny cabins below deck not much bigger than the average person's wardrobe.

I was told I'd be working ten hours a day but, from day one, I was often on shift from 6am until after midnight, with only a one-hour break.

BELOW DECK -- Season:4 -- Pictured: (l-r) Trevor Walker, Kate Chastain, Sierra Storm, Ben Robinson, Captain Lee Rosbach, Nico Sholly, Kelley Johnson, Lauren Burchell, Emily Warburton-Adams. Pic: Getty Images

I quickly realised that 17-hour days - and more - are common, and that while on paper my €3,500 monthly salary looked good since I wouldn't be spending much, in terms of an hourly rate, it's not much more than minimum wage.

And the job is exhausting: you're endlessly changing beds, sorting laundry, cleaning, then serving meals and drinks, before starting all over again.

On more than one occasion I phoned my mum in tears saying I didn't want to carry on but, in a way, I was lucky.

Exhaustion and loneliness were the biggest struggles for me in that first job, but a lot of girls encounter much worse.

BELOW DECK MEDITERRANEAN -- Season:8 -- Pictured: Tumi Mhlongo. Pic: Getty Images

One friend working on a superyacht had to sleep in the laundry room on towels because the billionaire owners said they didn't have a bed for her, while above deck she knew they were paying for underage girls to be brought on board for sex.

She phoned me in tears one day, saying she couldn't bear it: everyone had told her she had to 'stick it out'. I told her to disembark the moment she arrived in port.

Stories like that are not uncommon. Some of the boats may look amazing but don't meet the basic marine safety standards. And there are a lot of creeps about. Lots of crew I spoke to talked of seeing prostitutes being brought on board.

BELOW DECK DOWN UNDER -- Season: 2 -- Pictured: Margot Sisson. Pic: Getty Images

Sexual harassment is also rife, not just from the guests but sometimes the captain. I've heard stories about yacht owners paying to have sex with members of the crew who then have to serve breakfast to the wife.

I didn't have any problems on that front, but I was shocked by the drug use. Aside from the more energetic guests, partaking while I was setting the breakfast table, I lost count of the number of lines of cocaine I cleared up from the marble bathrooms and dressing tables.

Don't get me wrong - some guests were lovely. They'd invite you to join them for a drink, or for a swim. But there were plenty of people who could barely be bothered to acknowledge your existence or just talked down to you.

Below Deck's Captain Sandy talks viewer misconceptions and fears about joining the show

One time, I served a beer to a guest and without making eye contact he said icily 'Do you have a flake to put in that?' because he decided there was too much froth.

After three months of this, I was more than ready for a break, feeling the most tired I've ever been in my life and desperate to go home and rest.

But within hours of returning to my mum's, I had a call from a friend asking if I could fly back out to France to work as a stewardess on a highly prestigious yacht with a very famous owner.

Below Deck Hayu season 10

I was bone tired, but it was too good an opportunity to turn down and so, within 24 hours, I was back below deck. - this time on a 50-metre yacht with 12 crew and two holidaying Hollywood celebrity owners for whom, for the month I was on board, I was the main port of call.

I was cleaning their cabins, serving their drinks and nannying their kids, all the time my eyes agog at the level of wealth on display around me.

I had to sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA), which means I can't say too much, but I will say they had a member of staff for pretty much any job you can think of, including a dog-walker.

top deck of a yacht

Again I was lucky: the celebrities may have been mega-famous, but they did have manners.

They asked how I slept and said thank you, which is more than you can say for a lot of the one percent club of the world's wealthy.

Even so, after my month was up, I was ready for a break, and I returned home for the winter, only to return to join a 40-metre yacht based in the Med this summer.

Below Deck's Captain Sandy talks viewer misconceptions and fears about joining the show

This time the owners lived on board, meaning they were based on the boat, but would fly off to London or Hong Kong if they got bored.

They travelled a lot on the yacht too - during the few months I was there we sailed to Montenegro, Italy, Greece, Spain. I never got tired of coming into harbour in all these amazing places.

In the end, though, the physical tiredness got to me. While the owners were lovely - the wife once returned from a trip with a pair of Louboutin shoes for me - I was in a permanent sleep deficit, often topped up with a hangover, because there's a very heavy drinking culture.

Below Deck's Captain Sandy talks viewer misconceptions and fears about joining the show

When you do get a bit of time off, you want to spent at least a few hours in the place where you're docked, and that means letting off steam in the bars and restaurants.

The tiredness leads to other hazards too: one crew member I know broke their arm falling down a hatch on the boat.

I know numerous others, too, who have broken everything from fingers to ankles falling down stairs and tripping over hatches while the boat is in motion.

Below Deck's Captain Sandy talks viewer misconceptions and fears about joining the show

You can have all the safety procedures in the world, but there are natural hazards that come with walking round a boat at sea and they are magnified when you're tired - especially when the bow of the boat is rising three metres in the air before bouncing back down again in unsettled weather.

Weather at sea is unpredictable, and alongside millpond waters and stunning sunrises there are plenty of storms and squalls. When you're in passage, with no land in sight, it can be really scary: I've been thrown in the air from my bunk more than once.

It's easy to forget, too, that being at sea can result in more than just broken bones.

Below Deck Down Under Hayu strippers rock stars

The dangers were writ large last month when Bayesian, the luxury boat owned by British tech tycoon Mike Lynch sank off the coast of Sicily in the early hours after being hit by a sudden, violent storm.

Seven people, including Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah tragically died.

The boat on which I was working had been there a week earlier, which made it feel terrifyingly close to home.

By the time the disaster happened, I'd already handed in my notice. I'd woken up one morning after just a couple of hours' sleep, in the certain knowledge that I couldn't face another six months at sea.

I'm working my notice period at the moment, and can't wait to take my suitcase down the gangway for the last time.

Even so, I won't totally rule out going back. For all the slog, there is something rather addictive about life below deck. - even if it's nowhere near as glamorous as it looks on TV.
