Sailing Holiday: The Yacht Week Croatia

It’s not every day you get to see the world from the deck of your own yacht, unless you’re a billionaire, of course… talk about a gap in the market! The Yacht Week offers seven days of sailing to hidden splendours that most landlubbers will never see, experiencing exclusive events and, the best part, being completely surrounded by an equal balance of adventure-seeking guys and girls from around the world. For a similar experience on a smaller scale, a trip to  Ibiza allows you to rent a boat  to explore the stunning coastline and discover hidden gems at your own pace. If you’ve done Dubrovnik, you might want to do Ibiza next, or vice-versa

“The original reasons for choosing Croatia are still calling us back 10 years after our first visit: its rustic charm, oodles of history, spectacular scenery and of course, undoubtedly smooth sailing are the very essence of this Adriatic jewel”, says Sophie from one of the crews, and continues “It’s so good, we do the same trip twice, with two routes (Black and Red) visiting the same spots but in a different order. For both routes there is a fleet of about 50 yachts”.

One feature of the Yacht Week is when the whole fleet rafts up together and there is all the fun of swimming, playing and meeting the crews of other boats. The evenings are very spontaneous and can become quite festive, with a variety of parties happening for you to choose from.

This is the tour of The Yacht Week, beginning and ending in Split. It’s well worth a wander along the vibrant waterfront of the second-largest city in Croatia. You can’t leave Split without discovering the Diocletian’s Palace in Split Old Town. Inside this impressive Roman monument are an array of vibrant local restaurants and colourful shops. Remember to check which marina you will leave from – all are only a short drive from Split Airport.

The second destination is Hvar: welcome to the St. Tropez of Croatia! Anyone who is anyone has been seen along this marble waterfront which is filled with boutiques, bars and restaurants. Two of the most popular TYW events are hosted in Hvar; one at Hula-Hula beach bar and the other at Carpe Diem, both to be enjoyed in considerable style, of course. All yachts are moored in Palmižana marina, on a small island right opposite Hvar.

The place to be is the island of Vis. Croatia’s most distant and untouched island was only opened to foreigners in 1994 as it was the military headquarters for Tito. As a result, historical architecture is rife in Vis. Including Fort George, a restaurant and venue set within the crumbling walls of an old British outpost built in 1813. The panoramic view from the bohemian styled garden is just as memorable as the food and this is where we will host possibly the best party of the week.

Fort George is a new restaurant that opened on the 1 st  June with two new chefs.  Looking to the vibrant Mediterranean cuisine for inspiration, chefs Luciana Victoria Russo from Spain and Ramon Ortigosa Marsilio from Argentina, fuse traditional and contemporary tastes to create a dining experience to live up to Fort George’s spectacular surroundings.  With stunning views and a tranquil atmosphere, the Fort George restaurant makes for the perfect setting to sit back and get lost in the beauty of the location whilst enjoying a freshly prepared and delicious meal.

Russo and Marsilio are both experienced in creating innovative, tantalizing and delicious dishes.  Both chefs combine their extensive knowledge from their careers with the local produce and influences to give guests the ultimate culinary experience.  The restaurant will be open from 12pm until 11pm every day throughout the summer except during private events.

Komiza is a charismatic small fishing village located in the western bay of the island. Its ochre coloured houses and beautiful front are filled with quirky restaurants –and always the chance of an ice-cream! Most of the yachts will anchor in the bay and take a taxi boat to the pier in the evening. Around the corner from the village is the beach club where we will host the open air party right on the water’s edge.

Often called ‘Museum City’, Trogir is known for its high concentration of historical monuments, such as the Kamerlengo fortress and the sacred sculpture of the Blessed John of Orsini. The town is also renowned for the diversity of architecture found in its churches, palaces and towers. From Romanesque to Renaissance—the range of styles found here will impress even the most well-travelled.

Everything You Wanted to Know About Yacht Week Croatia

Sailing in Croatia

Did you know that Yacht Week Croatia is an opportunity to sail the Adriatic sea with your friends and have fun?

Croatian coast consists of almost 700 islands and is one of the most beautiful coasts in Europe. The pleasant Mediterranean climate of the with warm and dry summers and mild winters allows for a longer sailing season.

Moreover, the coast is full of natural bays, dives, caves, beaches, and crystal clear sea. All this makes the Croatian Adriatic coast a perfect place for sailing and sea holidays.

Sailing among the Croatian islands will give you a new place to visit every day. Some days you will spend on a yacht, and some on lonely beaches or in quiet coastal towns. Along with the cultural heritage, the hospitality of the hosts and excellent food, you can make your vacation in Croatia an unforgettable experience.

In this article, we’ll lead you through all the essential information you need to know about the Yacht Week brand. So, come on board!

What Is Yacht Week Croatia?

Yacht Week Croatia is a seven-day motor-assisted sailing experience that takes place once a year at various locations in the Croatian Adriatic. The main organizer is European Travel Ventures. Current main destinations are:

  • Greece (Athens route)
  • the Caribbean (BVI route),
  • Montenegro (Adriatic route), and
  • Croatia (Original route, Ultra festival route, and Dubrovnik route).

It is an authentic marine festival because you get to experience sailing and cruising on the gorgeous waters in one week.

The routes of the Week include Split, Šipan, Mljet, Korčula, Hvar, Vis, and Brač on their maps. The destinations vary every year, but one of the major cities such as the city of Split, Croatia always remains on the Yacht Week route. The route you sail depends on the destination you choose.

The yacht you rented docks in a different destination every day, which allows you to see and experience many things during the week. You can see historical sites, natural beauties, try out delicious food, various activities, and so on. Everyone will find something for themselves.

What to Bring on a Yacht Week

Take your nice clothes.

There will be some hot days on the boat, so flip-flops are a necessity. However, Yacht Week parties sometimes require formal attire. You’ll dock the yacht and go to a private garden party, or visit places like Carpe Diem in Hvar, one of the best clubs in Europe.

What’s more, if you decide to go to a fancy restaurant, sightseeing or visiting museums, make sure to have your nice clothes. They’ll probably kick you out if you show up in shorts and a sleeveless shirt.

Bring Medications

You probably didn’t think about it, but minimal sleep and alcohol don’t do good to your immune system. Neither does sharing water bottles and cutlery (with the people you may not know).

Moreover, seasickness isn’t that uncommon, so prepare your bags. Also, you might decide to cook on board and accidentally cut your finger. Therefore, take your first aid kit, all the vitamins and medications you find useful and make sure you know your first aid drill.

Have a Car-Charger Adapter

Standard yachts often have only 12-volt power outlets. If you’re a group of electronic device maniacs, you’ll need electricity. So, consider buying a solar-powered charger and look for a car-charger adapter that will help you with your laptops, smartphones, or air pumps for your unicorn floaties.

One thing to avoid is a hairdryer. The outlets won’t handle as much electricity. Plus, you’ll probably spend half of the time in the sea, anyway.

How to Book a Yacht Week Croatia

Once you get to know what essentials you should bring, it’s time to book the yacht. The bookings start in October, so you’ll have to hurry to book the next year’s sailing tour. After you decide which route to take, you can click on “Book now” to go with the purchase.

It will give you two options: “Book a full yacht” or “Book a cabin on a yacht.” You can book the latter only for specific routes, whereas you’ll need to book a full boat for your Croatian vacation.

Next, you’ll need to pick a Standard, Premium, or Premium Plus option. The first option is a yacht selected for you that can accommodate up to 9 people. The second and third option offers you to handpick your own boat. There can be 11 people on your Premium or Premium Plus yacht.

The best ones to choose are Premium Plus yachts. You’ll have plenty of space, they have bigger bedroom cabins. Trust us, you’ll need that kind of comfort after two nights of drinking. Also, the rear back area is an excellent spot to sunbathe and to socialize, if you decide to go on a cruise with people other than your friends. It can happen since there has to be a 50-50 gender ratio. Sometimes an exception is possible, but it only benefits the female population.

Pro tip: Let the Yacht Week crew assign you a skipper. You can’t expect your skipper to enjoy vast amounts of alcohol and sail the whole week. European Travel Ventures are real professionals, and they’ll give you the best skippers available.

How Much Will It Cost

The cruise usually starts and ends on Saturdays. The price for a Standard cruise is between 700 and 1,030 Euros per person.

The price for a Premium or a Premium Plus cruise, on the other hand, starts at 872 Euros per person. It climbs up to 1,999 Euros per person. Again, make sure to book in advance due to high demand.

You’ll need about 2,500 Euros for a week. It includes the stay, costs, and basic drinks onboard without going to fancy clubs and restaurants.

There’s a final party for crews of all 50 boats that sail during the Week. It’s a perfect opportunity for another get-together before the last night on board.

Would You Consider Yacht Week as Your Next Vacation Destination?

Finally, The Yacht Week Croatia is perhaps the best way to spend your vacation. Sail the magnificent crystal clear waters of the Adriatic, have fun with friends and enjoy the beauties of the area. Sign up for next year if you like that kind of fun.

If you’re already booked your Yacht Week Croatia and you’re looking to find some peace, make sure to find a perfect stay for you and your friends or family. Book Villa Lava , an ideal luxury villa near the seaside that has everything for you to relax.

How to Choose the Best Route

With so many incredible routes to choose from, selecting the best option for your Yacht Week adventure might seem overwhelming. However, by considering a few key factors, you can make an informed decision that aligns with your preferences and desires.

Firstly, think about the type of experience you’re seeking. Are you looking for a laid-back vacation, with plenty of opportunities to relax on pristine beaches and explore charming local towns? Or, do you prefer a more energetic and vibrant atmosphere, with buzzing nightlife and lively parties? Each route offers a unique blend of tranquility and excitement, so identifying your preferred ambiance is the first step in selecting the right route.

Secondly, take into account the time of year and weather conditions. Different routes have different optimal sailing seasons, and understanding the climate patterns can greatly enhance your Yacht Week experience. For instance, if you prefer warm weather and calm seas, the Mediterranean in the summer months may be the ideal choice. Alternatively, if you want to escape the winter blues, the Caribbean offers a tropical paradise during the colder months.

Another critical consideration is the destinations and attractions along each route. Do you have a particular fascination with ancient ruins and historical sites? Or, are you more intrigued by picturesque islands and hidden coves? Researching the unique landmarks and activities available on each route will help you narrow down your options and choose the one that aligns with your interests.

It’s also worth considering the accessibility and logistics of each route. Some routes may require specific visas or travel arrangements, while others may be more accessible from your home country. Keeping these practicalities in mind can help streamline your decision-making process and ensure a smooth and hassle-free journey.

Lastly, seek inspiration and recommendations from others who have embarked on The Yacht Week before. Online forums, travel blogs, and social media platforms are filled with stories and insights from fellow adventurers. Their firsthand experiences and advice can provide invaluable guidance, helping you make an informed choice.

By carefully considering the atmosphere, weather, attractions, logistics, and recommendations, you can confidently select the route that suits your preferences and creates a truly unforgettable Yacht Week experience. Guide to Dubrovnik

A city steeped in ancient beauty and unique history

Straddling the glittering Adriatic, Dubrovnik is one of the highlights of a Croatia yacht charter vacation. An up-and-coming destination for luxury yachts, Dubrovnik entices charterers with its flavour-forward dining scene, selection of buzzy bars and ample cultural sites, offset by white sandy beaches and bijou islets.

When arriving by yacht, Dubrovnik looks like something lifted from a postcard. Clay red roofs bake under a bright sun, pellucid turquoise water laps the shore and Aleppo pines coat the hills which frame the city. All of these beguiling features have worked to create a destination that is truly unmissable on an Mediterranean yacht charter .

Dubrovnik’s central marina for superyachts is ACI marina, a modern harbour equipped with all of the latest amenities and the capacity host yachts measuring up to 75m. The marina is tucked into the crook of a canal on the edge of Dubrovnik, treating yacht-goers to a glimpse of the city’s beauty before they set foot on shore. The canal is lined by palm trees and sheltered by a rugged, mountainous landscape.

Dubrovnik is replete with culture and history, evident in the Medieval walls that border the sea, the limestone streets that snake through the city and baroque architecture that carves out the Old Town. Cultural highlights include the Gothic mansion of Rector’s Palace and the famous fortress of Lovrijenac, which sits atop a rocky outcrop overlooking the sea. At the highest point of the city, the former 14th-century citadel of Tvrđava Minčeta stands guard, looming over Dubrovnik.

Charter guests in Dubrovnik would be remiss not to sample the wines of Croatia. Vino hailing from the Dalmation regions tends to be fruit-infused, light and perfect paired with cured meats, cheese and fresh seafood. Luckily, Dubrovnik is home to plenty of wine bars, laid-back bistros and upscale fish restaurants that will appeal to any palate.

One of the favoured restaurants in Dubrovnik among yacht-goers is 360, a sophisticated venue with incredible views over the marina and the shimmering ocean. Other favourites include Nautika, another popular establishment that specialises in catch-fresh seafood with a fine dining energy.

Charter guests will fall in love with Dubrovnik on a crewed yacht charter . If you’d like to learn more about planning your dream yacht charter vacation in this alluring Adriatic region, you can take a look at all luxury yachts for private yacht charters in Croatia.

Flotilla map

Discover sailing from dubrovnik.

With 1,185 islands making up this archipelago off Croatia’s Adriatic coastline, there are plenty of routes you could take to explore these hundreds of islands. Starting from Dubrovnik gives you not only a really short transfer (always a bonus!) but also the chance to leisurely make your way north up the coast and stop off at some of our favourite islands.

Dubrovnik is an attraction in its own right. This stunning city is bursting with things to see and do, the perfect place to spend the first night of your holiday.

What's the weather like?

The weather is a great pull for Croatia, with low 20’s in May and October and a lovely 30 degrees in summer. The prevailing wind in Croatia is a north westerly, with an average of a force 4 to 6 during the season. A wind to keep an eye out for is, the 'Bora' which is a north easterly that can be a surprise for those who've not checked their forecasts.

Please do be aware that unlike Greece, you will be required to pay marina and port fees. These fluctuate depending on the size of the yacht and location, but can be anywhere from £20 to £60 per night. The facilities in Croatia are however in general very good, with showers and shore power widely available.

Typical Itinerary & Highlights

Days 1 - 2, arriving at dubrovnik.

Once you've arrived at the marina and checked-in you will be shown to your yacht by the charter company. A short briefing of the boat will be given and then it's time to unpack, relax and have a drink!

Starting in Dubrovnik means on your first night you have the whole city on your doorstep (or stern!). Why not take a stroll around the city walls, a picturesque walk which, when lit at night, is simply stunning.

On your first day why not sail over to Sobra on the island of Mljet. This island is nicknamed as the the most 'enchanting' island in the entire Adriatic and also happens to be the greenest of all the Dalmatian islands. The national park here has two scenic inland salt lakes - Veliko and Malo Jerezo.

Dubrovnik

Days 3 - 4, Potter over to the Pelješac Peninsula

Once you've seen all that Sobra has to offer then why not head north up along the coastline of the Peljesac Peninsula for around 20 miles until you reach Orebic.

Orebic has some of the best beaches in the southern Dalmatian islands and its not hard to see why. With real sandy beaches surrounded by pine trees and with the island of Korcula only 2.5km away, a perfect lunch stop could be at the base of Mt Ilija, which by the way provides great shelter from the wind.

Korcula town

Days 4 - 6, Laze around Lastovo and beyond

You've seen the magnificent Mt Ilija, now its time for some relaxation. Head over to the island of Lastovo, a peaceful place where you can sit back and relax away from the hubbub of popular tourist spots.

The basilica in Uble is certainly an eye catching sight and worth a trip to visit. After this, head east for between 15-20 miles and you'll get to the northern tip of Mljet, but this time stop in Pomena or Polace. Both with fantastic beaches and access to the nearby national park. Furthermore, in Polace you can also try some water sports if you wish.

On your last full day of sailing its best to start heading back towards Dubrovnik via Sipan, the largest of the Elaphiti Islands. This island was in the past hugely popular with Dubrovnik's wealthiest and we can see why!

Lastovo Sunset Yacht Bay

Days 7 - 8, Returning to the base

On your last day you'll usually be expected to arrive back at the base between 4-6pm. Once you're back in the marina and you've packed ready for your flight home the next day why not take advantage on your last night to explore Dubrovnik's winding streets and culinary delights that litter the shore front.

Our Shore to Sail holidays are a combination of a one or two week flotilla sailing holiday with another relaxing week or two ashore.

These holidays will appeal to those who enjoy sailing but have family or friends who are not quite so enthusiastic about sailing - a compromise can now be made!

Most people opt for a week of sailing followed by a week of winding down on shore. However it is entirely up to you to do what you want to do (and when!)

Iris Hotel and Apartments

The Iris Hotel has been a popular choice for flotilla sailors for many years. This accommodation option will fit in with any of our flotillas starting and finishing on Lefkas Island. The hotel itself is a small family run hotel located close to Nidri Town. It has a combination of studio rooms for two or three people and apartments that can sleep up to 4.

Salvator Spa Hotel & Villas

The Salvator Spa Hotel is perched in the hills above Parga town and is a slightly more luxurious offering. The rooms on offer range from the Deluxe Room for two people, up to the Superior 2 Room Villa for up to 6 people. The hotel itself has an excellent restaurant, pool and spa facilities and all villas come with their own private pool.

Villa Meandros

Our brand new villa in Sivota on Lefkas is exclusive to Sailing Holidays Ltd. Built with families and groups in mind, the 3 double bedrooms all feature en-suite bathrooms. Built into the hill the ground floor level comprises of the master bedroom, a large kitchen and living space. On the same level you will find a huge outdoor seating area and a private pool.

7-day sailing adventure in Croatia with SailWeek – CROATIA, A SAILING PARADISE –

7-day sailing adventure in Croatia with SailWeek – CROATIA, A SAILING PARADISE –

The Croatian part of the Adriatic Sea is one of the most attractive sailing destinations in Europe, and even the World. Croatia boats over 1200 islands, islets and reefs and about 2000km of coastline with magnificent jewels that are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage.

From pristine waters and hidden coves to charming towns & marinas, vineyards, incredible landscapes and national parks; Croatia is a sailing paradise.

We choose the Dubrovnik Route with SailWeek and sailed for 7 days on a premium yacht from Dubrovnik to Split (you can also go the other way around). The price for both the standard and premium yachts includes accommodation for 7 nights, skipper, port fees, tourist taxes, fuel, dinghy, towels, linen, WiFi, snorkelling equipment, stand up paddleboard, food and mineral water for breakfast and lunch. BTW you can take your own alcohol and food on board at no extra charge.

With the premium Dubrovnik route yachts you also get cabin fans, taxi boat service to get from Palmizana island to Hvar, plus bike rentals at Mljet National Park. The sailing season runs from end of May to end of September and prices vary slightly depending on the selected week of the summer. You can find out more  here .

yacht week dubrovnik

Here’s our 7-day sailing itinerary with  @sailweek :

Day 1: Sipan

After checking-in with SailWeek at the Dubrovnik ACI marina and meeting our skipper and the other crew passengers, we embarked on our sailing adventure at around 5pm and sailed to Sipan island. The sea was rather rough for me and I wasn’t feeling great on the crossing.. Once we docked at Sipan island, the sea was calm and the boat was less rocky thankfully. We all went for dinner at a restaurant recommended by our skipper called Konoba Tauris and tried one of the local dishes called peka – a slow cooked lamb on the fire.

Sipan is the largest of the Elaphiti Islands, 17 km northwest of Dubrovnik

Day 2: Mljet

On our second day of sailing we left Sipan island early in the morning and made our way to Mljet island. Once we docked at Pomena on Mljet island, we picked up our bikes and cycled around the national park (125KN = 17 EUR entrance per person) to explore two saltwater lakes – Veliko and Malo, also known as Large and Small Lakes. We first cycled around the Small Lake and had fun jumping off a bridge into the water. We then went to the Large Lake and took a small boat to St Mary’s Island in the middle of the lake. There is an old Benedictine monastery dating back to the 12th century which is now a restaurant/cafe. The national park is so beautiful and it was really enjoyable to explore by bike. We cycled back to the town by sunset and in the evening had dinner at a local fish restaurant called Konoba Barba Ive.

Mljet. Right in the middle of the Large Lake, there is a small island/islet Melita (Sveta Marija) with a large building of the former Benedictine monastery, erected there in the 12th century

Day 3: Korcula

On day 3 we sailed out to our next destination: Korcula. Before docking at the marina we stopped by a small island for a swim. Once on Korcula island, we had an option to hire a scooter to explore the island or go to Lumbarda beach through the most amazing vineyards. We decided for a taxi to Lumbarda (100KN each way) and spent the afternoon chilling there. In the evening we explored the lovely old fortress city of Korcula and watched the sunset from the top of the church bell tower of St. Mark’s Cathedral (25KN/person) – you get to admire the panoramic views over the town and the sea so I highly recommend going up here. In the evening we all went for a wine tasting & Dalmatian tapas at Marendin – the owner was very friendly and funny whilst describing the local wines, which made our experience even better!

Monastery on Badija. Badija is the largest island in archipelago Skoji, near Korcula island in Croatia.

Day 4: Hvar

After a lovely day in Korula it was time to set sails towards Hvar. The sea was really calm though so it was a nice crossing sunbathing on the bow. We moored at Vinogradisce Bay where we were going to spend the night. The water was beautiful so it was a nice place to swim despite all the other boats. In the evening we got the water taxi to Hvar town and walked around at sunset. It’s such a charming town with its small cobbled streets, beautiful cathedral and squares. We had dinner at a tavern called Konoba Menego and it was amazing – you must try their homemade gnocchi with shrimps. We then went for a drink at a rooftop bar called Teraca Bar just next to the old port. It’s a lovely quiet terrace bar away from the busy bars & nightclubs serving lovely cocktails.

Hvar is a port and resort town on the Croatian island of Hvar. Yachts fill its harbor in summer.

On our fifth day we put the sails up and we made our way to Vis island. We rented scooters and explored this incredible island. We firstly went to Stiniva Cove, voted one of the most beautiful beaches in Europe. It sure is stunning but it’s quite a hike to get down there so do wear comfortable shoes. I also advise going before 3pm as it then gets shady. We then went over to Komiza and wandered around this charming coastal town whilst also having a bite to eat at Fabrika. In the evening we headed back to Vis town and walked all the way around to the other side, its such a stunning place to explore. After such an active day touring around the island, we had dinner on the boat and enjoyed a quiet evening under the stars.

Vis

Day 6: Stari Grad

We left Vis in the morning and sailed to Tiha Bay, also known as Silent Bay, on the northern side of the island of Hvar. We spent the day swimming, snorkelling, paddle boarding, sunbathing and having a nice lunch on the boat prepared by our skipper. The water was so pristine and there were hardly any other boats so we really enjoyed our day here. Tiha and Stari Grad are not a part of the standard Dubrovnik rute itinerary but due to the bay on Solta island being over crowded our skipper made the best decision ever.

Stari Grad

Later in the afternoon we docked at Stari Grad and spent the evening walking around the town. I found it so charming with its small cobblestone streets, old stone houses and peaceful squares. Did you know that it’s the oldest town in Croatia?! There aren’t as many tourists here in comparison to the town of Hvar so I highly recommend visiting Start Grad. Plus we got to see one of the most incredible sunsets of our trip in Croatia – see photo below! In the evening, we all had a lovely dinner together at Antica and then went for some cocktails by the port.

Stari Grad

Day 7: Split

We sailed into Split by the evening and this was the last destination of our sailing adventure. We explored the historical centre to see some of the city’s main landmarks, such as Diocletian’s Palace, Saint Domnius Cathedral, Golden Gate and Prokurative Square. We had dinner at a steak house called Chops and Grill and the meat was delicious (however I did find the restaurant a bit touristy). After dinner, we strolled along the Riva, ate an ice-cream and made our way back to the marina for our last night sleep on the boat.

SUMMARY OF OUR SAILWEEK DUBROVNIK ROUTE

Overall it was an amazing experience and definitely a great way to explore a new country. It’s quite something to live in a confined space with limited storage and being on top of one another. Thankfully the other members of the crew were really cool and we all got on so well (it’s rare to get on so well with strangers when you’re living together 24/7)! Plus I didn’t get as seasick as I thought I would and I managed to sleep a well very night on the boat.

Our skipper was great and did everything possible to ensure we enjoyed our trip. When you’re on such an amazing trip surrounded by cool people it’s hard for it to go wrong. If you’re looking for a unique holiday experience on the Adriatic Coast in Croatia, and particularly want to go sailing, whether on a party escape, an adventure or to even rent your own yacht with a skipper, then I highly recommend choosing SailWeek – you can book you place for next summer  here .
