Below Deck Sailing Yacht Salaries Revealed and See How it Compares to Motor Yacht Pay, Plus Captain Lee Reveals Which Captain's Job is Harder

The Below Deck crew members are raking in the cash, but which yacht crew makes the most?

In the first season of Below Deck Sailing Yacht , the crew made a total of $143,000 in tips for a six-week season, allowing each yachty to pocket $16,000. That’s a nice chunk of change for a mere six weeks, but that amount is considered mid-range compared to what other crews have received in the franchise. For instance, Captain Lee Rosbach ‘s season five crew took home $56,650 each in tips alone.

According to one yachting source, crews working on motors yachts, such as the ones featured on Below Deck and Below Deck Mediterranean , tend to make more in tip money , and they also earn higher salaries than sailing crews. Motor yachts require a higher level of formality, which is one reason for the difference in pay.

“Motor yachts are more formal regarding uniforms, owner and guest relations, and job requirements,” according to the source as reported by Showbiz Cheat Sheet . “That is why the salaries are higher.”

For example, a deckhand on a sailing yacht earns around $3,250 per month while someone with the same position on a similar size motor yacht will bring in about $4,000 per month. This difference also applies to the stewards as a motor yacht stew makes about $3,300 monthly while a sailing stew will earn around $2,500.

As for captains, it’s unclear what Captain Lee, Captain Sandy Yawn , or Captain Glenn Shephard are making. According to Luxury Yacht Group , yearly salaries range anywhere from $48,000 to $310,000, but the amount completely depends on experience and the size of the vessel.

Although Captain Lee likely receives a higher salary than Glenn, Lee claims that Glenn’s job is more difficult.

“Sailing vessels are a lot of work, but we usually have more crew on same size motor yacht, but I would say sailing on a big sailboat is harder,” he explained to a curious fan on Twitter on March 1.

The Below Deck Sailing Yacht crew does have one big advantage, though. They are typically able to spend more time exploring the beautiful surroundings than those on a motor yacht.

How Much Does The Below Deck Cast Get Paid?

Below Deck's Captain Lee smiling gray beard and hair

"Below Deck" just sailed through the Caribbean for its 10th season on the biggest and most luxurious motor yacht in the show's history. "Set on the luscious island of St. Lucia, with crystal-clear waters and dramatically tapered mountains, the Pitons are sure to excite even the most discerning guests," Bravo teased about the latest installment (via NBC Universal ).

Ever since the show first aired in July 2013, it's been a runaway success for the network. This is no surprise, given all the drama, feuds, fights, bed-hopping, scandalous relationship drama , and picture-perfect locations each season. The show has proven such a hit that it's spawned a franchise with sister shows such as "Below Deck Mediterranean" and "Below Deck Sailing Yacht." Still, despite the ever-growing number of spin-offs, in a survey, fans told Nicki Swift that they thought the original was still the best "Below Deck" franchise .

Over the seasons, cast and crew have come and gone, but Captain Lee Rosbach has held steady at the helm, steering through the turquoise, glittering seas throughout every season. And who can blame him? Working on an opulent and extravagant yacht while it sails through some of the most stunning vistas in the world is a job that many would do for free. However, the reality show members get all of the pleasure and some of the pay. But, how much does the "Below Deck" cast really make?

The Below Deck cast either make bank or earn 'peanuts'

Eddie Lucas wearing baseball cap steering boat

Some say reality TV doesn't pay, and that's true in certain cases. "Exposing your personal life to national scrutiny isn't always that lucrative," MoneyWise reports. "In fact, some cast members earn absolutely nothing for their TV appearances." They note how much "The Bachelor" contestants make for laying their souls bare — which isn't that much in the grand scheme of things.

However, that's not the case for "Below Deck." Depending on the crew's longevity and rank, they can earn serious bank, or just "peanuts." Salaries are strictly secret, but US Weekly has quotes about their moolah from various cast members. "While we do get paid better than a normal yachtie, of course, we are still not getting paid what people like the Housewives are making," First Officer Eddie Lucas said to the New York Post . He claimed he was paid "peanuts" in comparison, which was annoying "because [they're just] going out to dinner and fighting." As opposed to sailing and fighting, presumably.

Jessica Moore, Ciara Duggan, and Tiffany Copeland weighed in on the show's Instagram fan page , and they all seconded Lucas' claims. "Would be nice to get residuals when reruns air, at least!" Copeland wrote. However, Captain Sandy Yawn from "Below Deck Mediterranean" begs to differ. She told US Weekly it's all down to "negotiation" skills, and hers must be stellar, as The Things estimates, she's worth a staggering $400,000. But Captain Lee Rosbach and Chef Ben Robinson are apparently worth even more than that.

Captain Lee and Chef Ben are the cream of the Below Deck crew

Below Deck Chef Ben Robinson holding knife

Captain Lee Rosbach and Chef Ben Robinson are the highest-paid of the "Below Deck" cast. It's not surprising Rosbach is up there, given he's been on the show since its debut. According to The Things, he's worth a tidy $800,000, but Robinson leaves the skipper in the shade. Despite being part of the franchise for only six years, The Tab reports the chef is worth $2.5 million. And he's not shy about showing off the trappings of his wealth. Robinson regularly posts on Instagram to ensure everybody knows about his rock star lifestyle. "My 40th ... After a long day, I have finally adjusted," he captioned a video of himself in a Versace dressing gown, sipping on a glass of fine wine, and puffing a cigar. It's hard out here for a former reality TV chef!

As for Rosbach, it seems that, sadly, his earning spree may have come to an abrupt end after the captain made a shocking exit during Season 10 of "Below Deck." People reports that Rosbach's worsening health issues forced him to jump ship mid-sail. He'd been struggling with nerve pain before taking the helm but thought it was just temporary. Not so, unfortunately. "My injury, it's getting worse. The left side of my body, I don't feel anything," he admitted during an on-camera confessional, sharing that he was unable to "do a god d**** thing about it, and it's hard."

Captain Lee Rosbach sets the record straight on Below Deck salary controversy

Captain Lee Rosbach on Below Deck Season 10

Below Deck cast salaries have become a hot topic — again — these past two weeks.

Captain Lee Rosbch has set the record straight after Below Deck Sailing Yacht alum Ashley Marti called out the show and Bravo for low pay.

Below Deck pay has often been compared to the Real Housewives with allegations the yachties make far less.

This week, the stud of the sea entered the chat to clarify how the yachties are paid when they appear on the show.

In true Captain Lee fashion, he didn’t hold back from addressing a topic that keeps coming up every year.

Captain Lee Rosbach sets the record straight on Below Deck salary uproar

On his podcast Salty with Captain Lee, he talked about Below Deck salaries with his co-host Sam DeCavalcanti. Captain Lee mentioned that recent alums — not on his show — talked about the pay, claiming it was only $6,000 monthly.

“Not completely true, but see, people have a tendency to lump when they hear Below Deck. They lump it all into one category, correct? And my show was totally separate from the rest of them,” the captain responded. “Do I think that they make as much as the housewives? No, but the Housewives for a long time carried Bravo.”

Captain Lee explained what the yachties are paid, referencing the $6,000 a month comment and the industry standard.

“They got paid industry standard,” he stated.” Plus, whatever it is, they negotiated with the network, whoever knows whatever that is.”

Like other reality TV shows, recurring yachties make more on Below Deck than newbies, which, as Captain Lee pointed out, is how it works in any industry.

Below Deck alum Captain Lee Rosbach defends how much cast members make

The stud of the sea made it clear he has no idea what Bravo pays other Below Deck stars. Captain Lee only knows what he negotiated during his ten seasons on the show.

However, he did admit that, at least on his show, the crew made great money in tips. Below Deck Season 10, for example, the crew made $250,000 in tips for six weeks of work.

“$1,000 to $1,500 for a three-day charter that’s pretty good money,” Captain Lee expressed.

Again, the captain feels the crew should be compensated more, but he wants to reset the narrative that the yachties on Below Deck make $6,000 a month because it’s more than that.

“I know what a deckhand makes is $7,000 a month. That’s industry standard,” he spilled. “Plus, whatever the network decides to pay them for being on TV on top of that. Plus, whatever tips they generate which are usually pretty good. At least they were on our show.”

Captain Lee shared a clip from his podcast on Instagram discussing the Below Deck salary on Instagram.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Captain Lee Rosbach (@captain_lee_rosbach)

The comments section had Tiffany Copeland from Below Deck Med stating she made $3,500 monthly as a third stew during Season 1, plus tips. Tiffany shared she made $15,000 for six weeks but did not reference anything about the stipend she got from Bravo.

Below Deck Med alum pay remark

In 2022, Eddie Lucas admitted that the cast members on Below Deck got paid better than normal yachties but not even close to the Real Housewives money.

Captain Lee Rosbach doesn’t disagree with the statement that the Below Deck cast members make much less than the Real Housewives. The stud of the sea just wants to clarify a few other things as the salary subject came up again.

What do you think about Captain Lee’s words?

Below Deck Season 11 premieres on Monday, February 5, at 9/8c on Bravo. Seasons 1-10 are streaming on Peacock.

Everything the ‘Below Deck’ Franchise Cast Has Said About Their Salaries Through the Years

Everything the Below Deck Cast Has Said About Their Paychecks Through the Years

Over the years, the Below Deck franchise cast has played coy about their earnings — only offering small glimpses about the money they bring home.

The hit Bravo series, which debuted in 2013 and has spanned several spinoffs , follows the lives of crew members who work and live on super yachts during charter season. The cast earns money working on the boat, which is supplemented by tips from guests and their involvement in the reality series.

In May 2022, Eddie Lucas sparked a conversation about paychecks when he revealed that he won’t be coming back for season 10 of Below Deck after appearing in six seasons.

“I was not invited back to do another season,” the first officer told the New York Post in May 2022. “I actually didn’t even get a phone call from them saying they hired someone else — which kind of goes to show what the production entails. Everyone on Below Deck is expendable. … While we do get paid better than a normal yachtie, of course, we are still not getting paid what people like the Housewives are making, which is a little frustrating, because they’re not really working — they’re just going out to dinner and fighting,” he added at the time.

After a Below Deck fan page reposted Lucas’ quotes on Instagram, several former franchise stars weighed in on the confession.

"Southern Charm makes 25k per episode ... I made less than that all season including tips 😂," the Below Deck Sailing Yacht alum claimed in the comments section of an Instagram fan page in July 2022.

Captain Sandy

In response to Eddie's comments about the Below Deck cast's salary, Captain Sandy noted that she wasn't of the same opinion.

"All I know is negotiation is an art either you're good at it or you're not," the captain told Us in July 2022. "There [is] no favoritism here. It's about budgets and that's really the reality of it. And if we were paid lower than the rest, I don't know what to say about that. I love what I do. You show up because of the passion in what you do [and] the money comes in other ways."

Ashley Marti

"Just want to thank @BravoWWHL for all the free OF publicity! I love waking up and seeing that in a couple hours, I’ve made more money than #Bravo paid me for 6 weeks," the season 3 stew tweeted in June 2022, shortly after missing the reunion.

Marti later called out the alleged pay discrepancy, telling Business Insider in January 2024, “We’re on TV, but technically we’re the help. We don’t get the same treatment.”

Glenn Shephard

"Salaries, as far as I'm concerned, are normal. I don't have any issue with the salaries," the Below Deck Sailing Yacht star exclusively told Us Weekly in May 2022. "We do very well in tips. We get tips, whether there's cameras or not, and often they're very good. But I think during the show, they're, maybe, even a little bit better. So, I have no complaints about money."

Eddie Lucas

The former bosun questioned the money that he earned after filming six seasons for Below Deck . “There is somebody monetizing off of the show, but it’s definitely not us,” he shared in May 2022. “ Below Deck — regardless of it being the most popular show on Bravo — we are the lowest-paid cast members.”

Kate Chastain

In October 2019, the former chef stew offered some insight about how tips factor into a successful paycheck for the crew.

“On a yacht of that size, [a good tip] would be $5,000 a person, for seven days of work,” the Florida native explained in an interview with Entertainment Tonight . “Five grand a crew member, usually. Our charters are a little bit shorter, just so we can make the show, [but] everything else is exactly the same. So, it’s prorated. We usually get around $2,000 to$ 2,500. Anything less than $1,000 would be depressing, which sounds crazy, doesn’t it?”

Captain Lee

During an interview with Bravo Insider in 2021, Captain Lee noted that the crew has seen an uptick in tips since the show originally debuted. "I’m not sure exactly what the catalyst is, I just hope it doesn’t quit," he said at the time, referring to some "good ones" in season 8. "And I'm very grateful for it."

He continued to show his support for his Below Deck salary over the years.

"Do I think they make as much as the Housewives? No. But the Housewives for a long time carried Bravo," he said on a January 2024 episode of his "Salty With Captain Lee" podcast. "They got paid industry standard [for yachting] plus whatever else they negotiated with the network. Whatever that is."

Lee continued: "I don't know what they make. I am not privy to their salaries, but I know what they make in tips, and that is a nice chunk of change. The last season I did, we split up a quarter of a million dollars in tips [after six weeks]. Think about it. $1,500 or 2,000 for a three-day charter? That is pretty good money."

The former Below Deck Med star, who created her own training academy for yachting, previously confirmed that the cast members bring in more than they typical would because of the show.

“A 6 week season is a Below Deck season and Below Deck is filmed which is another job altogether!" she tweeted in January 2021. The Australia native broke down the costs to more than $6,000 a month for a chief stew position on a 40-meter yacht. That becomes more than $70,000 a year.

The deckhand revealed that working on super yachts while filming Below Deck allowed her to spend a few months traveling the country.

“Of course I’m very frugal and live a pretty minimalist lifestyle. But I was able to stretch the two months I worked on My Seanna on Below Deck [season 6], plus about 60 days working in Alaska,” Gerber told Showbiz Cheat Sheet .

The former reality star noted that boat owners will also pay for nearly anything the crew may request, joking, “If I wanted $60 face cream, it would be paid for.”

In July 2022, Rhylee responded to Eddie's claims about the salary for the cast. “If he said that, number one, we are paid much much much much much less than the Housewives, which is crazy because it’s Bravo. It’s still a big network. There’s still a big production company behind it. They’ve got the money,” she said on the "Pop-Off!" podcast.

At the time, Rhylee noted that Below Deck rotates cast members every season, which would explain why they don't bring in as much money.

Colin Macy-O’Toole

During an interview with Showbiz Cheat Sheet in 2021, the Below Deck Med alum admitted that yachting changed his outlook on making money.

“I’d probably start right out of college at age 22 and then put in about five years of work on yachts,” he said. “Depending on where you live, you could even save enough money to buy a house.”

Kelley Johnson

After filming several seasons for Below Deck , the bosun admitted that the paycheck wasn't worth an onscreen return.

“I would do another season and I’ve been asked back. It’s just the monetary [aspect]. And the stress you go through," Johnson told Showbiz Cheat Sheet in January 2021. “For me, the monetary value that they pay the crew members just isn’t enough for how long you have to deal with the show. Because you’re only six weeks worth of filming and then you’ve got, you know, the few months before it airs.”

Yacht life definitely pays.

Week after week on Below Deck , viewers see the crew clean up with giant wads of cash left behind by the charter guests as a "tip" for their work -- and chief stewardess Kate Chastain tells ET, it's not faked for reality TV.

"On a yacht of that size, [a good tip] would be $5,000 a person, for seven days of work," she reveals. "Five grand a crew member, usually. Our charters are a little bit shorter, just so we can make the show, [but] everything else is exactly the same. So, it's prorated. We usually get around $2,500, $2,000. Anything less than $1,000 would be depressing, which sounds crazy, doesn't it?"

Below Deck charters typically last two or three days, but Kate says the crew puts in the equivalent of five days of work to jam-pack the experience with a week's worth of fun.

"We're working not just eight-hour shifts, it's like, we're working pretty much around the clock," she notes. "All the days start to blur together. And during the tip meeting, Captain Lee [Rosbach], will say what we got and I'm always like, 'Is that good? I don’t know anymore… $3,000, are we happy with this?'"

To put this in perspective, those tips are on top of a fee for charting the yachts. Kate previously revealed to ET that it costs about $150,000 a week to take over the ships.

The tips come on top of a regular salary, which differs based on job. A chief stew, reportedly , earns between $62,000 and $75,000 per charter season on a Below Deck -sized yacht (most of the vessels on the show are in the 150-foot range). Second and third stews would make about $50,000 a season, a chef between $70,000 and $95,000, while a captain would earn $120,000 or more, a bosun about $52,000 and deckhands between $40,000 to $52,000.

Kate says there is one part of the tip process seen on the show that might just be for TV -- how the tip is delivered. On the show, the crew stands in line to send off the guests, with the primary charter guest handing over an envelope of cash to Captain Lee. Kate notes that the lineup is standard, but the envelope handoff isn’t.

"There's always a lineup, just 'cause it's polite," she says. "Like, even in Downton Abbey , they all line up. So, I think it's a tradition that’s been around for hundreds of years, but sometimes, I think, instead of traveling with so much cash, they wire the money."

"So, it's not as dramatic," she continues. "But I've had charters where we anchored in the British Virgin Islands, the guests had left, we're eating leftover lobster, drinking leftover champagne, counting our stacks of cash. I felt pretty special at that moment."

Below Deck airs Mondays at 9 p.m. ET on Bravo.

Cast Off to Cash: Uncovering the Salaries of 'Below Deck' Crew Members

Crew members on the Bravo reality show 'Below Deck' may not be paid as well as stars of other Bravo shows. How much do they make? Let's get into it.

Kathryn Underwood - Author

April 28 2023, Updated 1:06 p.m. ET

Here's how much the 'Below Deck' crew makes in salary per episode.

The 'below deck' yacht crew's salary plus tips is allegedly lower than pay for other bravo stars..

Fans of Bravo TV’s reality yachting program Below Deck have likely wondered whether the show’s crew and cast members are paid well for their efforts. The show follows superyachts that have been chartered to travel in beautiful locales. Below Deck looks at how the guests behave on board and how the crew members get along. How much does the crew from Below Deck make?

Those of us who merely watch from our homes and smartphones may daydream about the luxury of cruising the Mediterranean or other warm locales with an attentive crew. Even being part of the crew of the hit show may sound appealing, but does the talent get paid fairly for their hard efforts at keeping these superyachts going and fulfilling customer demands?

Let's find out!

Below Deck premiered in 2013 and has led to several spin-offs in different locations. Below Deck: Mediterranean was the first to follow the original reality show, and in 2020, Below Deck: Sailing Yacht hit television sets. In 2021, spin-offs Below Deck Adventure and Below Deck Down Under were created.

The Below Deck franchise relies on “yachties,” or crew members, who keep things running. Specific roles on board include captain, first officer, deckhands, bosun, chief engineers, chef, and steward/stewardesses.

According to ShowStarNews , cast members must sign an NDA (non-disclosure agreement) about their salary. Some sources say that cast and crew who complete a full season receive $5,000.

All cast members divvy up tips from guests who charter the yachts, which Chief Stewardess Kate Chastain claimed was about $5,000 for a week-long charter and $2,000–$2,500 for a three-day charter.

Crew members of 'Below Deck Down Under' ham it up for the cameras.

Some former Below Deck crew members have publicly criticized the network for paying the crew and cast less than similar shows like those in the Real Housewives franchise. Eddie Lucas, a former cast member, said they were paid more than “normal yachties” but not near what the Real Housewives stars earned.

“There is somebody monetizing off of the show, but it’s definitely not us. Below Deck — regardless of it being the most popular show on Bravo — we are the lowest-paid cast members,” Lucas told the New York Post.

Other previous cast and crew members of the Below Deck franchise commented after Lucas's remarks on pay discrepancy. Jessica More, of the Below Deck: Mediterranean , said, "Yep 👏 I see all facts in his statements." Ciara Duggan, from Season 1 of Below Deck Sailing Yacht, remarked that Lucas was "not wrong" about cast pay. Another former cast member, Tiffany Copeland, commented that she wished they received residuals when reruns are aired.

Crew and cast members with more celebrity power can also likely use that to negotiate higher salaries for their work on the show.

ShowStarNews estimates salaries on board by role:

Deckhand: $24,500

First Officer: $28,250

Bosun: $25,250

Chief Engineer: $32,000

First-time chief stewardess: $24,000–$26,000

However, in non-reality-TV situations, crew members on a yacht are paid relative to the size of the vessel as well as to their responsibilities on the vessel. Crew Finders, a yachting recruitment company, estimates salaries of $192,000–$228,000 for a Captain on a vessel between about 160 and 190 feet long.

A Below Deck chef in their first season on the show might earn about $29,000 for one season. However, as Crew Finders noted, a chef on a chartered yacht of the typical size for Below Deck, a chef might earn close to six figures ($96,000–$108,000).

It’s one of the top-rated reality TV series on Bravo, so we were admittedly shocked to see how comparatively small the Below Deck cast salaries were to their network compatriots. They’ve also claimed they were subjected to racist comments during filming.

She also explained what a typical day looks like on the boat in the lead-up to and during filming. “We are actually on the boat and we have a 24-hours-a-day shoot schedule . We split the team up in 12-hour shifts, morning and night shifts, so we have access to the cast at all times. When you’re not on shift, you take the water taxi back to the production crew’s hotel nearby, where we exchange notes with those on the other shift, to make sure nothing falls through the cracks.” It’s hard work, no doubt, which is why we were shocked to hear about the Below Deck cast salaries and how little they get paid.

In another shocking claim, Gabriela Barragán, who appeared in the same season of the spinoff, alleged a producer—nicknamed “M&M” for master manipulator—encouraged her to drink alcohol despite her history of substance abuse. Bravo told Business Insider that they “ take allegations of misconduct on our shows seriously and review all claims that are brought to our attention.”

The network added that it has enhanced its production policies, which include “stricter guidelines on alcohol consumption and direction on when to intervene to maintain safety of cast and crew, increased psychological support, enhanced workplace trainings, and a requirement to provide cast and crew with a direct line to NBCUniversal to raise concerns.”

According to the New York Times, there’s very little room for privacy, too . “They’re here to share every aspect of their lives,” said Noah Samton, a senior vice president of current production for Bravo. “Those are the rules. The only place you have privacy on the boat is the bathroom.” Even bathroom use has limits; cast members are told at the beginning of a season that if two or more people enter one at the same time, a camera should be expected to follow. “Not just because of sex,” he continued. “It could be they’re having a conversation — they hate so-and-so. We need to know that.”

Below Deck Mediterra nean airs on Bravo at 8pm ET.

Here's How Much Money The Cast Of Below Deck Makes

Below Deck star Captain Lee Rosbach, Kate Chastain, Ashton Pienaar

Working aboard the luxury yachts of Below Deck isn't like any other charter. As series stalwart and chief stew Kate Chastain revealed to Entertainment Tonight , the trips featured on the hit Bravo show typically last around two or three days, versus the usual weeklong voyages. Even so, Chastain was quick to note the crew puts in the equivalent of a week's work to ensure the experience is top-notch for their clients.

"We're working not just eight-hour shifts, it's like, we're working pretty much around the clock," she admitted. If you're wondering how much the Below Deck crew actually make in tips , well, it's no small sum, and usually lands somewhere in the several thousand dollar range. "On a yacht of that size, [a good tip] would be $5,000 a person, for seven days of work," Chastain said. And their working wages aren't bad either.

Below Deck-like charter crews make decent money

Below Deck star Kate Chastain

According to Crewfinders , a chief stew like Kate Chastain stands to earn between $62,000 and $75,000 per charter season on the kind of yacht featured on Below Deck , most of which are around the 150-foot range (via Worldwide Boat ). After that, second and third stews are still pulling in about $50,000 per season, chefs make anywhere between $52,000 and $72,000, a bosun will earn up to $52,000, deckhands will pull in between $40,000 to $52,000, and last but not least, a captain starts at $120,000. In fact, it's estimated that Captain Lee could make up to $210,000 per year , depending on the size of the boat he's manning.

Luxury Yacht Group has slightly different and potentially more impressive figures (depending on the position and how many months per year the crew works), advising an experienced captain can make up to $25,000 a month on similar sized boats, a chief stew up to $10,000 per month, a bosun up to $6,000 per month, deckhands up to $5,000 per month, stews up to $6,500 per month, and a chef up to $11,000 per month.

There are other major perks to being a Below Deck yachtie

Below Deck stars Captain Lee, Ben, and Ed

Aside from the massive tips and generous wages, there are also some great perks to sailing the high seas as a yachtie. According to yacht crew recruitment company AYC ( via Starcasm ), crews earn a tax-free income, enjoy generous vacation allowances, and, naturally, the job involves living and working aboard a luxury yacht with zero monthly bills to worry about — it's a pretty sweet deal all round.

As for how much the cast makes for appearing on the show itself, producer Mark Cronin revealed during an AMA on Reddit that they only get a "small sum" for taking part. He also revealed that Below Deck is slightly more realistic than other so-called reality shows, saying, "The contract between the cast and me is: 'Please make us a great show that people will love — and please be fair in portraying who we are and what we do.'"

Below Deck crew members can easily build up their savings

Below Deck star Colin Macy O'Toole with Below Deck Med start

It really is a dream job, if Below Deck Med star Colin Macy O'Toole is to be believed. The reality star told The Cheat Sheet if he could do it all over again, he'd start working in the industry even earlier. "I'd probably start right out of college at age 22 and then put in about five years of work on yachts," he said.

Macy-O'Toole advised that, if he'd done so, the savings would've been exponential, explaining, "Depending on where you live, you could even save enough money to buy a house." This chimes with what a chief stew previously revealed in one of Refinery 29 ' s Money Diaries, disclosing that, because she didn't have to pay taxes, saving up to $4,500 monthly was a piece of cake (from her annual salary of $72,000).

The Below Deck crew only has to work a few months a year if they choose

Below Deck star Rhylee Gerber aboard an Alaskan fishing boat

The work is hard but, as Below Deck 's own Ryhlee Gerber told The Cheat Sheet , if you're smart, you can reap the rewards. "Of course I'm very frugal and live a pretty minimalist lifestyle. But I was able to stretch the two months I worked on My Seanna on Below Deck, plus about 60 days working in Alaska," she advised, referring to another job working as a fishing boat captain in Alaska. That's four months of work for a year of living — not too shabby.

Gerber also hinted at certain perks being provided for the reality show crew, joking, "If I wanted $60 face cream, it would be paid for." Both she and Macy-O'Toole again stressed the travel side of the job, as it gives them the opportunity to see the world, while bosun João Franco pointed out yet another perk. "The more luxurious boats have a gourmet chef that will cook all crew food every single day! The fridges and pantries are stocked with an endless supply of all you can think of," he said.

All in all, it seems that being a yachtie has its fair share of benefits.

The Below Deck Franchise’s Most Infamous Moments

The Below Deck franchise launched in 2013 on Bravo, with multiple spin-offs following suit. This nautical series introduced our plebian, land-dwelling selves to luxurious yachts, gaudy tablescapes, and exotic locations. I remember watching this series’ first group of yachties struggling to please their demanding charter guests in Season 1. As exhaustion set in, these crew members then began turning to (and on) each other (in anger, and sometimes, in lust), and needless to say, the drama hooked me like I was the biggest bass in town. But sometimes, the storylines have been over the top, birthing the following infamous moments within the Below Deck franchise.

Below Deck: When Ashton nearly got killed, but a cameraman saved him

Halfway through Below Deck Season 6, Ashton Pienaar almost lost his life. This incident occurred when a line used to tow tender boats wrapped around his ankle, pulling the deckhand into the sea. As Rhylee Gerber sounded the alarms, all hands quickly arrived on deck. Thankfully, a quick-thinking cameraman named Brent Freeburg was nearby, and thanks to him, Ashton is still alive.

When Captain Lee Rosbach heard Rhylee speak the two words no captain ever wants to hear, aka “man overboard,” into her walkie-talkie, he quickly took their yacht out of gear. Meanwhile, on deck, Brent wasted little time. He dropped to his knees while setting his camera off to the side and rapidly loosened the tow line tethered to the yacht. This action freed Ashton from having his ankle ripped off by the vessel’s taunt line, which would have seen him drowning while bleeding out to death in the water.

Afterward, a shaken Ashton swam to the nearby tender. Later, the crew watched footage of this near-fatal moment, overcome with thankfulness that Ashton survived this now-infamous moment on Below Deck.

Below Deck Down Under: When the crew and production stopped a possible sexual assault

Below Deck Down Under Season 2 had two separate infamous moments, so take heed with this trigger warning, as this section includes details involving two accounts of sexual assault. To protect your mental well-being, please stop reading here if this topic causes you harm.

First up, Bosun Luke Jones got wasted on a night out. In the sprinter van hurling back towards their boat, Luke set his sights on a stewardess named Margot Sisson . Margot was equally trashed, for the record. Therefore, once onboard, she headed to her cabin to sleep.

Luckily, Aesha Scott caught on to the vibes Luke was giving. To help protect her blacked-out stew, she crawled into bed with Margot, watching over her for a bit. Once Aesha left, however, Luke entered. As he climbed on top of Margot, production realized that Margot could not consent, so they intervened.

Once they kicked Luke out of Margot’s cabin, Aesha appeared. She woke up Captain Jason Chambers , who kicked Luke off the yacht. The next day, Luke lost his job. This firing greatly upset Laura Bileskalne , another yachtie without boundaries.

Laura blamed everything but Luke for his actions, including Margot. It was gross. But when Adam Kodra told Laura no, and she kept gunning for him, she sealed her fate next. After her firing, Aesha and Captain Jason comforted their crew, showing off their solid leadership skills following these back-to-back infamous situations onboard.

Below Deck Med: Chef Mila’s homophobia and terrible cooking skills

Chef Mila Kolomeitseva from Below Deck Mediterranean Season 4 was something else. To be clear, I burn toast. Yet, I probably would have handled her charters better than she ever did. Due to her rampant showings of homophobia, her personality sucked too.

Even though Mila stepped on board with an impressive resume, it quickly became apparent that she had a case of Lieabities. She used Aunt Jemima’s pancake mix instead of fresh ingredients, but even these failed to thrive on her watch. And then she microwaved (and licked) the guest’s steaks, making me dry hurl in turn as I watched from my couch. Her canned nachos, which Hannah Ferrier , backed by Captain Sandy Yawn , refused to serve, signaled a final warning sign that Mila’s resume was a sham. No cap.

Mila also struggled outside the galley. Her words struck a nerve with 99.9% of the viewers and 100% of her cast. To paraphrase, Mila thinks being gay is abnormal and wrong. On Watch What Happens Live , Captain Sandy handled these statements well, noting that she has no idea what Mila’s childhood in Russia was like. Captain Sandy also refused to let the social biases of her infamous (for all the wrong reasons) chef affect her mindset, like a boss.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht: Captain Glenn crashes the yacht

When Captain Glenn Shephard isn’t eating massive crackers on his breaks, he’s in the wheelhouse, driving the Parsifal III on Below Deck Sailing Yacht . In Season 2, however, Captain Glenn crashed his sailing yacht into a dock. To date, this crash is the largest one that’s taken place on Below Deck.

In one season, the Parsifal III crashed twice. The first time, the winds kicked up, causing Captain Glenn’s deckhands to lower every available fender on board. The yacht rubbed the deck, and the damage was thankfully minimal. But only a few beats later, the crash that topples all other crashes transpired.

When a malfunction occurred in the engine room, the Parsifal III crashed into a different dock, causing the ship to collide with the wall. “I’m f*cking going ahead, but I’ve lost it,” Captain Glenn said to himself as his crew shouted at him to slow down. “F*ck me. God d*mn it. F*ck,” he yelled as his vessel launched everyone onboard into a path of mass destruction.

Thankfully, no lives were lost or harmed. The yacht’s insurance kicked in to repair the dock and the boat, and the season continued without any further crashes. That said, I will never forget watching Captain Glenn’s face as he realized he was about to crash on national television. Say it with me; this moment was an infamous one on BD.

Below Deck: Eddie and Rocky’s boatmance

During Below Deck Season 3, the quirky mermaid-like stew that stole my heart, better known as Rocky Dakota , admitted she was attracted to Eddie Lucas . Once Rocky learned Eddie was in a long-term relationship, she stopped flirting with the Bosun. Eddie then began making covert advances towards Rocky. A secret affair emerged, with laundry room hook-ups becoming their norm, as back then, this area held zero cameras.

However, they still wore their attached mic-packs. And also, various camera crews were often awake. These video vixens followed Eddie and Rocky to film their mating sounds, which seeped out from their closed laundry room doors. “Eduardo loves the ladies,” we heard, as Rocky loved whatever Eddie was doing, as proven by her sounds.

But once their fellow yachties began to catch on to their romps, Eddie denied their flings. He even labeled Rocky a liar whenever she spoke the truth about their dalliances. It was not Eddie’s brightest moment in this series. But this infamous, secret boatmance forever changed the course of this franchise, as additional cameras went up for all further seasons.

Below Deck Med: The saga that led to Hannah being fired

Hannah and Captain Sandy worked together for many years. More often than not, sadly, they clashed, as Captain Sandy found Hannah’s work ethic (and passions) lacking, while Hannah felt like her boss was nitpicking her every move. In Season 5, things finally reached a point of no return, and Hannah got canned.

It all started when Hannah ticked Malia White off by refusing to give up her cabin for Tom Checketts , the guy Malia was dating. Tom was coming on as their replacement chef, so Malia wanted to bunk with her man instead of Hannah. After Hannah said nope, Malia snapped a photo of her undeclared anxiety medications, and then she sent her shots to Captain Sandy. Sharing is caring, am I right?

Captain Sandy then fired Hannah. Making matters worse, Captain Sandy followed Hannah off the yacht, further berating her already beaten-down former stew. Thankfully, these two have since made amends . It’s called growth, and we love to see it.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht: The toxic Gary, Daisy, and Colin love triangle

Season 1 of BDSY was dismal. Thankfully, in Season 2, three new staples walked on. Daisy Kelliher , who still holds the title of chief stew in this series, found herself wrangling two of the same men for many years. Three, if you count Captain Glenn.

Right off the bat, Daisy and Gary King carried a flirtatious bond, but Gary was a man of the night, aka a player, so nothing serious ever formed here. Colin MacRae , however, had a girlfriend during their first two seasons of filming. But both he and Daisy would later admit that they dug each other. When Colin returned single and ready to mingle in Season 4, Daisy was all in, and they started a boatmance, which Gary low-key hated.

Gary claimed that Daisy was moving on with Colin, not him, out of spite. Therefore, Gary continued flirting with Daisy. Daisy failed to shut his flirtations down, which frustrated Colin.

Nevertheless, Daisy and Colin continued to grow close, so Gary dropped a bombshell midseason. He and Daisy slept together in between Seasons 3 and 4. Realizing that this was being filmed, Daisy’s face clinched, as now she’d have to tell Colin this fun news.

Colin was upset, but he persisted. Sometime after Season 4 wrapped, he and Daisy sadly parted ways. Colin began dating a former fling, which annoyed Daisy, who called him out on this at their reunion. Only time will tell how this infamous trio either heals or sinks on BDSY, should all three ever return to filming at the same time, that is.

Below Deck is currently streaming on Peacock.

Capt. Glenn and his comeback team Daisy Kelliher, Gary King and Colin MacRae resume their responsibilities aboard Parsifal III, along with new, dynamic crew members, as they set sail in Sardinia, Italy.

Capt. Glenn realizes that his laid-back leadership style has allowed his crew to become too comfortable and starts taking charge of quality control in the interior department, much to Daisy's dismay. In the galley, Chef Ilesha's cooking impresses the guests, but her indecisiveness and co-dependency lead to time-management issues between courses, which causes her to self-destruct. On deck, strong personalities collide, and a power struggle results in a near mutiny, as Gary clashes with his new overconfident deckhand, Chase.

Two overlapping love triangles further complicate the dynamics on-board, and a shocking hookup puts Colin, Daisy and Gary’s friendship in jeopardy.

With a near collision, fire, crew rebellion, gruesome guest injury and two different potentially season-ending engine failures, this is the most captivating and unpredictable season yet of Below Deck Sailing Yacht.

Below Deck Mediterranean season 9’s villain, Ellie Dubaich, believes Carrie O’Neill is stealing her spotlight aboard Mustique, but it would be best for the rest of the crew if Ellie left the show . Throughout Below Deck Mediterranean season 9 , Ellie’s behavior has been a point of contention aboard Mustique and for viewers watching at home. While she started the season as a seemingly competent Stew working hard to find herself promoted during her next charter season, Ellie’s behavior took a shocking turn as the season continued on. When her issues began to reveal themselves, viewers struggled to support Ellie anymore.

Throughout the early moments of the season, Ellie was one of the more agreeable crew members of Mustique. Her issues with Bri Muller , the Third Stew aboard the superyacht, were understandable in the beginning of the charter season, especially after Ellie had told Bri that she was interested in their mutual love interest, Lead Deckhand Joe Bradley. When it became clear that Bri was going to do whatever she could to take Ellie down, t he Second Stew’s behavior started to become more erratic . With Ellie unable to handle anyone above her, Carrie joining the interior team has thrown her off.

Ellie Has Been Difficult Throughout The Charter Season

Her superiority complex has been tough to handle.

While her performance on Mustique hasn’t been as lackluster as some, Ellie’s behavior has been difficult throughout the charter season on Below Deck Mediterranean . While she started off as the more competent of the two Stews working beneath Chief Stew Aesha Scott, Ellie’s attitude has been a red flag since early on in the charter season. As Second Stew, Ellie knew she had authority over Bri and did her best to lord that over the Third Stew from the beginning. Rather than genuinely trying to help Bri through her struggles, Ellie made it more difficult for her to learn anything.

20 Best Reality TV Shows Right Now

Reality TV is more popular than ever. With so many to choose from, here are some of the best reality TV shows to stream or watch right now.

Ellie’s personal vendetta against Bri , which she consistently denied during the confessional interviews on Below Deck Med, made it clear that she was trying to sabotage the Third Stew. While Ellie was relaxing, taking breaks, or giving half-hearted performances on service, she left Bri to take care of the bigger tasks like cleaning the cabins or handling the laundry. Trying to say that Bri was victimizing herself when she called out Ellie’s attitude, Ellie made it clear that she wasn’t going to hear any criticism , even from Chief Stew Aesha. As the charter continued, Ellie only got worse to handle.

Aesha Is Trying To Navigate The Crew Dynamics Without Bruising Ellie’s Ego

She’s trying to be diplomatic.

Throughout the charter season, Aesha has been doing her best to be diplomatic surrounding the drama with the rest of her team. While there were issues that needed to be addressed between Ellie and Bri after the Joe drama caused them to bring their problems into the charter, Aesha didn’t want to make the drama between the women out to be about a guy aboard Mustique. Instead, she tried to create lines of communication for Ellie and Bri that didn’t focus on anything but the work they needed to do. With the Mustique being down a Stew, Aesha was desperate.

Throughout the charter season, Aesha was clear that they were working without the help of a fourth Stew, which meant that she, Bri, and Ellie needed to be at the top of their game. The charter season had been difficult within the first few weeks, and when Ellie and Bri’s drama cropped up and caused Aesha an even bigger headache , she wasn’t sure if she’d be able to handle it. Instead of focusing on the issues, Aesha tried to be as diplomatic as possible , allowing each of her Stews to vent their frustrations, but ultimately making calls for the team.

Ellie Thinks She’s The Best Stew Aboard Mustique

She feels she knows better than anyone.

Although Ellie has nearly as much experience as Aesha, she’s had different levels of superyacht experience in her time as a Stew. Ellie’s time aboard Mustique was self-described as a chance to gain more experience in order to become a Chief Stew , and though she felt she knew everything she needed to, the charter season clearly had some lessons to teach the Second Stew about leadership. Ellie’s time aboard Mustique should have shown her that she doesn’t know best, but instead, the Second Stew made it clear that she feels she knows better than the rest of her team, including Aesha.

During the most recent episode of Below Deck Mediterranean season 9, Ellie made it clear that she also feels she knows better than the new Stew, Carrie. As another yachtie with years of experience, Carrie knows the attitude she needs to have coming into the season with just a few charters left to complete. With an attitude and sense of urgency that worked for Aesha, Carrie was someone the Chief Stew felt comfortable with, which rubbed Ellie the wrong way. Ellie tried to assert herself, even reminding Aesha that she’s the Second Stew, but was shut down for her attitude .

Aesha Needs To Call Ellie’s Behavior Out & Let Her Go For The Crew’s Sake

She needs to preserve the work environment.

While Ellie’s behavior has been escalating in the final charters of the season, Aesha and the rest of the interior team shouldn’t have to deal with Ellie’s erratic behavior any longer. While the Second Stew is still working at a decent capacity, her attitude aboard the Mustique has been unforgivable. Trying to put herself over the betterment of the crew and the service of the guests is unnecessary, and Ellie has been doing everything in her power to ensure that the team knows she’s second in command, regardless of the situation. Ellie’s behavior has made her impossible to root for .

Even with just a charter left in the season, Aesha should notice the fact that Ellie feels like she’s not the center of the interior’s attention anymore and remove her from the team. With Ellie’s attitude only getting worse , Aesha should make it clear that she doesn’t tolerate the level of superiority complex that Ellie has and fire her from Mustique to make a statement . Ellie needs to understand that though she’s been an asset to the team, her behavior aboard future superyachts wouldn’t normally be tolerated. Her time on Below Deck Mediterranean should be coming to an end soon.
