Cisco employees face a month of silence ahead of second layoff in 2024

Cisco Systems headquarters in San Jose, California, US, on Monday, Aug. 14, 2023.

After tech giant Cisco announced plans for its second round of layoffs this year, employees tell TechCrunch that they will not know if they are affected for close to a month.

Earlier this month, Reuters reported that Cisco was planning a second round of layoffs this year, after letting go of around 4,000 workers in February. Cisco confirmed last week in a SEC filing that it is cutting 7% of its workforce.

While employees have now been informed that there will be a new round of job cuts, the company has refused to tell affected workers until September 16, according to multiple Cisco employees.

“This has become the most toxic environment I’ve ever worked in, and the mood as evidenced by comments on internal platforms is as dark as I’ve ever seen it. I’m only waiting until my next big [Restricted Stock Unit] vest to leave, and I know others are too,” a Cisco employee, who asked to remain anonymous to avoid retaliation, told TechCrunch. “Two layoffs of this magnitude in the same calendar year is beyond the pale.”

Another employee, who also asked to remain anonymous, said Cisco “needs to stop layoffs every year and work on innovation and getting more revenue.”

Cisco did not respond to a request for comment.

The San Jose, California-based company announced its second round of layoffs as it reported lower than expected earnings during the year, its net income during the quarter down by 45% on the year prior. Revenue was down about 10% to about $13.6 billion during its fourth quarter.

Chuck Robbins, the company’s chief executive, said Cisco delivered a “strong close to fiscal 2024.” Robbins made $31.8 million in total executive compensation during 2023, the company’s filings show.

modern trailable plyboats catrigged

pogo ingenious dilletante

I admire these functional boats. They are lightweight, offer enormous interior volume , are for shallow waters ( trailering) are pretty fast, have lighwight unstayed feathering carbon masts for easy handling and trailering, , look different , are for the last three reasons not for everyone. In France they build a lot of plyboats, chined hulls, up to high-end racers. Plyboats are very lightweight and easy to build. For cruisers they opt for for only seven panel. Faster boats , real fast boats normaly have nine panels. Where does the " chine" from modern roundbilged racers comes from. ? Reverse ? Performance Plyboats with nine panels, are equal to roundbilgeld boats with chine ! But that's worth another thread.... However, Gilles Montaubin's boats are different. In Europe they only have a small market , their owner are " connaisseurs" , yachtsmen that really know what they need. This tiny clever yacht is an excellent example: https://chantiermer.wordpress.com/productions/144-2/ please have a look at Montaubin's portfolio. You've to click on " Book" ( wrong translation for portfolio) https://chantiermer.wordpress.com/ Aah, whatever , click yourself thru. I think u have enough experience in " clicking" A " Hidesight" , how those boats are built, gives the yard "Etablimarin Chantier Naval". They've build a lot of Montaubin's designs, only the carbon masts and spars are from the designer' s own yard ( It's written somewhere there, but in french or english ? I don' t remember . Click click . copy paste links....in between gimme my gin, it' 23.45h... http://www.etablimarin-chantiernaval.com/etroit-mousquetaire-790.php A faster better attempt to plyboats delivers David reard. Nine Panels. Exit at Waterline, narrow waterline . UN-BE- LIEVABLE good looking boats . Nearly all of his boats ---no that are ships---have the option liftkeel , or Bilgekeel. Click thru, enjoy ! Thursday briefing.

Hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah.

Israel and Hezbollah exchanged strikes

The Israeli military and Hezbollah traded cross-border strikes yesterday, leaving at least one person dead deep inside eastern Lebanon, as months of diplomatic efforts have failed to ease tensions in the region.

Israel said that it had struck weapon-storage facilities used by Hezbollah. The strikes killed at least one person and injured 30 others, Lebanon’s Health Ministry said. Hezbollah said it had responded by targeting an Israeli base in the Golan Heights, which Israel said had caused at least one injury.

Diplomatic efforts to bring an end to the war in Gaza are at a standstill, despite hopes from the U.S. that a new proposal could break the deadlock. Israeli and Hamas officials appear cool on the proposal, and both sides have accused the other of sabotaging peace talks by repeatedly raising new demands. (Here’s what to know about the proposed deal .)

An Israeli strike on a school turned shelter in Gaza City killed at least two people, according to Gazan emergency services. Here are other key developments in the war .

🇺🇸 U.S. ELECTION 2024

The presidential election is less than 80 days away. This is what we’re watching.

The biggest stage of Tim Walz’s life

Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota, the running mate of Vice President Kamala Harris, took the stage at the Democratic National Convention last night in Chicago, as he formally accepted the nomination for vice president. In a plain-spoken but searing speech, he lashed out at Donald Trump as “weird” and “dangerous” and leaned on his own Midwestern roots as evidence of the ticket’s broad appeal to voters.

Earlier in the night, Bill Clinton warned Democrats to avoid overconfidence amid all their joyful celebration. “We’ve seen more than one election slip away from us when we thought it wouldn’t happen,” he said, a possible reference to his wife’s defeat in 2016.

Throughout the convention, Harris and her allies have sought to portray Trump not as the dangerous villain, racist and threat to democracy that have previously formed the Democrats’ playbook, but rather a meanspirited fraud who is playing a long con on the American people . They are depicting him as a fake working man’s populist and an anti-union “scab.”

The latest news: Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is expected to end his independent presidential campaign this week, according to people briefed on his plans, and is in talks to throw his support behind Trump.

Here’s what else to know:

Trump traveled to North Carolina for his first outdoor rally since his assassination attempt. He was shielded by bulletproof glass .

The ascension of Harris has unleashed a gusher of political donations to Democrats .

Michelle Obama’s militaristic sleeveless outfit suggests this election will be a fight , our fashion critic writes.

Divers recovered 4 bodies from a sunken yacht

After three days of searching the hull of a sailing yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily, divers recovered the bodies of four passengers who were believed to have been trapped inside their cabins when the vessel went down, officials in Sicily said. The victims have not yet been publicly identified, and two people remain missing.

The yacht, the Bayesian, with 12 crew members and 10 passengers, was caught in what some witnesses described as a waterspout, essentially a small tornado on water, during a sudden and violent downpour before dawn on Monday.

This looks a fun ship. Not too sure how good as a distance cruiser though. Despite its broad beam and apparent weight carrying ability, it seems very tippy and probably wet. Notice the crew all hanging on very determinedly on what seems quite a mild day. The small cats in the vid look perfectly comfortable and dry by contrast. Not a volks machine maybe. The Quenet version looks much cheaper, simpler and more comfortable for probably half the cost.

A volkscruiser of interest....

Not suspicious at all, making the case , and about the need for American flagged boats ...

I've always had a soft spot for the bilge-keeled Westerly Centaur design by Laurent Giles and think it is one of the most underrated cruising boats around.

david reard yacht design

As it happens, there's a Centaur project boat in Gig Harbor looking for someone who'd appreciate it with $500 in hand and the wherewithal to sort out the needful.

From the looks of the pictures all the nasty stuff has already been done which would make the actual needed work something of a slam dunk.

If it were down here in  America's paradise I'd snap it up faster that you can say VolksCruiser.
