Kelowna   posted Aug 28, 2024 @ 03:00pm by   Kent Molgat

Video: kelowna yacht club considers shift from a not-for-profit society to a private company.

A group of members at the Kelowna Yacht Club believes the best way to improve the infrastructure of the marina is to start with a major overhaul of how the club operates.

Hundreds of members have signed on to a plan that would see the club transformed from a society to a member-owned company and they've forced a general meeting to vote on the proposals.

Club member Dan Clozza is spearheading the move.

Clozza said it's time for the not-for-profit model to go.

"A lot of us feel it's an unfair governance," he said.

"We believe that electing people to the board on an annual basis that are responsible for the bottom line is a better way to go."

Clozza clarified that his group is not making any accusations about the existing board.

<who> Photo Credit: KelownaNow

"We're not saying anybody is stealing anything or doing anything wrong, we're just saying we can do better."

Currently, when someone leaves the club, that membership is returned to the club which makes it available to someone on the waiting list.

Clozza and his group want that to change too.

"Members want to be able to transfer these memberships to their kids," he said.

And that's not all.

"You would be able to sell your membership," confirmed Clozza.

<who> Photo Credit: KelownaNow

But other members fear the changes could put the very future of the club at risk.

A text message that is being widely shared among members describes the proposals to be voted upon as an "existential threat to the future operations and stability of our wonderful club."

The message goes on to say "This could be the single most important vote in the history of our club."

Kelowna Yacht Club Executive Director Thom Killingsworth is refraining from commenting publicly about the meeting.

"While any internal discussion, debate and meetings of membership are a normal part of any club," said Killingsworth, in an email to KelownaNow.

"They are private, and not a matter for discussion with non-members of the club."

<who> Photo Credit: KelownaNow

The City of Kelowna is considering what the changes would mean, but they aren't willing to share their correspondence with the club publicly.

"My team has had recent communications with the Kelowna Yacht Club regarding organizational changes that they are contemplating," said the city's real estate manager Johannes Saufferer.

"As the nature of the discussion involved or relationship as landlord/tenant of the yacht club basin area, I'm not at liberty to disclose them publicly."

That message being shared among members says, if adopted, the change from not-for-profit status would immediately trigger massive financial demands and a review of the lease agreement with the City of Kelowna for the marina.

A source close to the Yacht Club leadership told KelownaNow that the club and most of its members oppose the changes, but they will need to ensure enough people make the effort to vote them down.

The general meeting is scheduled for 7:00 pm at the Kelowna Community Theatre Sept 4.

Voting will take place online starting at 8 pm.

I have used the Paddle Club at Kelowna Yacht Club for 3 years. The staff/service is amazing! I highly recommend both KYC and their Paddle Club!

if you like yoga, you should try "Yoga on the Dock Kelowna Yacht Club" Wednesday evenings. Great environment and knowledgable instructor. What a nice way to wrap up the day.

The Kelowna Yacht Club is a beautiful wedding venue with so much charm. Located on the share of the Okanagan Lake in Kelowna, the backdrop could not be more beautiful with a nautical feel, of course. The reception space is nice and open with large windows allowing for so much natural light and views of the lake and mountains. The food is great and the people are very accommodating. A great wedding venue!!

Beautiful location, good food, nice service. Brand new location for 2015 has opened with sweeping views of Lake Okanagan. Had the breakfast eggs Benedict which was reasonably priced; homemade potatoes, a nice Hollandaise, nicely presented on the plate. This is a huge improvement over the previous yacht club.

The staff at the yacht club are rude. Such as most of the members. I will never spend my time or money there

Photo of Brenda K.

The restaurant at the Yacht Club is only available to members and their guests. If you know someone that can get you access, it is a beautiful space for a relaxing meal. The food ranges from casual (hamburgers and sandwiches) to traditional entrees. It isn't a large selection but there should be enough choices to find something you like. My teenagers have had the yam fries with chipotle dip many times and believe they are tastier here than at most other restaurants. On my last visit I shared an arugula and tomato salad (yum) and a grilled vegetable and shrimp pasta dish (excellent). I didn't like the gluten free chocolate cake, but the molten lava cake is always good if you want chocolate. My daughter loved the cheese and fruit plate, which has a large assortment of items and is good for sharing - either after a meal or as a light snack. The view is wonderful from inside or outside, and the staff are friendly.
