SATURDAY 31st AUGUST – FUN AND FUNDRAISING DAY
This Saturday afternoon and evening, 31st August, we have a special fun and fundraising day in memory of Finlay Herrington, who sadly died last December at the tragically young age of 18. Our cadets will be out on the water in teams, and running some fun races. Later, there will be games onshore, with a BBQ for the cadet families. Club members are of course welcome to pop in and watch the fun. The bar will be open, with a handpull beer on tap of course!
This Saturday is just another way of remembering Finlay, and raising funds for research into the inflammatory virus and auto-immune response that he suffered from as a young child. There is a Just Giving page for donations – see here .

YOUTH SAILING WEEK AT LARGS SC
This year’s Youth Sailing Week, 5th to 9th August, had 24 kids from 8-16 years old come to learn and improve their dinghy sailing. A quarter of the kids that attended the course had little or no sailing experience, the rest were mostly from our Thursday night cadets.
Senior Instructor Yuan Wong and his team of eight LSC/LSTA instructors had the kids afloat almost every day, in everything from flat calm and bright sunshine to heavy rain and 28 knot gusts! Thursday was a fun day, to Cumbrae, with a picnic lunch, litter picking, and a treasure hunt. The beginners gained their RYA YSS Stage 1 certificates, and the more experienced sailors ticked off more boxes in their logbooks.
LARGS SC AND THE LSTA TO THE RESCUE!
RIBs from Largs SC and LSTA (our sister training operation) went to assist a 31 foot keelboat that had suffered engine failure as it was returning to the marina on 7th August. In the fresh south westerly winds, it was in danger of drifting onto the rocks near the Pencil.
The first RIB, manned by Bill Forsyth and Denis Watney, started towing the yacht, but could only make slow progress, so Yuan Wong in our most powerful RIB also assisted, and the boat was safely berthed in LYH.
Well done everyone – click on “read more” to see the full story.

Largs Sailing Club was founded in 1936 (see our history pages ), and is now based in a modern clubhouse in Largs Yacht Haven , just to the south of Largs.
The Club organises a range of activities for all ages and abilities, from the teaching of beginners by the LSTA to hosting large national and world championship events. We also run regular racing for dinghies, and keelboat events. Our active cruising section (sail and power) organises cruises in company around the Clyde and the west of Scotland, and holds regular talks and skills workshops.
Throughout the year, we hold quiz nights, talks with guest speakers, and themed evenings including dances and parties.
Our waterfront location gives us the best view in the marina, as can be seen from the LSC WebCam . Our Lookout Lounge is a welcoming port of call for members and guests. It has a bar run by club volunteers, which is open for club organised activities. During clubhouse opening hours, members can access a range of snacks and hot drinks, with an honesty box.
Rooms in our clubhouse are available to hire for occasions such as business meetings, sail training, art exhibits etc., and are complete with wireless internet and AV equipment.
AUTUMN CLUBHOUSE, CAFE AND BAR HOURS
The clubhouse is open from 0800 to 1700 every day , and is accessible with the members' door code.
With the shorter evenings, most of our summer activities have now finished for the season, so opening of our bar will be limited to after Sunday afternoon racing only, plus special functions.
Come in and grab a coffee or snack from our self service honesty café in the Lookout Lounge. We have crisps, snack bars and even pot noodles for sale. It is self-service and you can pay by card or cash. Please wash up any crockery or cutlery you use. Self service means what it says - we don't have "staff"!
Our bar is manned by club volunteers, and they reserve the right to close early if the day's activity has been cancelled, or the bar is quiet.
Please keep an eye on the Club website and Club Facebook pages for details of any socials in the club. Remember also that many members meet on Tuesday mornings from about 11am for coffee and a natter - join us!
Members can hire our main Lookout Lounge for private parties, and hire the upstairs office. Members and outside groups can book the Hems Kalis meeting room, with AV facilities. All have access to our high speed wi-fi.
For full details, see http://www.largssc.co.uk/club/facilities , or contact Julia in the office ( [email protected] ).

We’ve not had a newsletter for a few months – but that doesn’t mean nothing has been happening at the club, as those who follow our Facebook pages or web site will know!
So what have we been doing over the winter, and into spring? As you can read in the attached pages, afloat, Sunday dinghy racing continued through most of the winter, with only a short break, and now that the longer evenings are here, Wednesday evening racing has restarted. Adult and junior sail training has now started, with all courses full. Mentioning training, please note the new, additional summer courses for juniors (page 5) in July and August.
We now have the One Design Regatta over the weekend of 18-19 May, the 707 Scottish Championships, 15-16 June, and Largs Regatta Festival, 24-25 August. It would be brilliant to have a volunteer (or volunteers) to coordinate these and future events – and a cruising convenor.
Ashore, we’ve had several quiz nights and three excellent winter talks, and our cruising members had a very social fitting out supper in late April. We are working on a summer cruise in company programme.
All of these things only happen because of the commitment of our amazing volunteers, and there’s a special feature on them (pages 8-10).

Yacht & Catamaran Charter in Largs, Scotland
We can help you find the perfect yacht or catamaran to sail from Largs!
Sailing from Largs
Largs is our favourite place to charter in Scotland because it offers brilliant sailing conditions, and is a superb jumping off point to the beautiful and tranquil islands and bays of the Clyde – you’re already some way off the beaten track so you’ll find stunning scenery practically from the word go!
There’s plenty of places to sail to and explore – the Holy Loch, Lochranza, Tarbert, Portavadie, Campbeltown, to name a few - and there are mountains, whisky distilleries, local pubs, and fine dining restaurants to find along the way. The area is non-tidal and benefits from being somewhat sheltered from the Atlantic weather - but it can still offer some interesting and challenging sailing conditions, particularly around the start or end of the season, which runs from April to October.
SAILING RATING: Intermediate / Advanced - there's interesting and changeable weather conditions, plus tides, so some experience is useful before sailing in Scotland. Beware that two members of crew are required to hold qualifications, and you will need an RYA Yachtmaster or equivalent to sail outside the Clyde area.
MUST-SEE: Check out our full suggested itinerary below. We'd highly recommend taking in the tranquillity (and whiskey) in Lochranza, a sail around the Kyles of Bute, and a night spoiling yourselves a little in Portavadie.
WHAT WE CAN OFFER: We have a great range of yachts available for charter (sadly no catamarans yet!) from our trusted Charter Partners, all available bareboat or Skippered. We can also arrange a Hostess, Personal Chef and other crew.
GETTING THERE: The Marina is c. 45 minutes from Glasgow's airports. We can organise transfers for you - a 4 person taxi is c. £ 50 - 60.
WHY BOOK WITH US? We only work with the very best professional charter operators , who we have met, know, and trust to give you the same outstanding customer service as you'll get from PlainSailing.com.
WHAT NEXT? Use the pink box to search for yachts or catamarans with LIVE pricing & availability - if you have any other questions or requests, get in touch via Live Chat, the Contact Form , or by phone.

Largs is a great place to sail from to find tranquillity and peace. There’s remote and secluded bays, cosy fishing villages, and unspoilt coastlines bursting with wildlife to be found. There’s the odd ferry that connects the various islands, but in the main, you’ll have large chunks of the water to yourselves.
It’s only a six day itinerary because you’ll only get on board on Saturday afternoon, and need time you get provisions sorted and get familiar with the boat, so you likely won’t make way until the Sunday. The boat needs to be returned to Largs on Friday evening (but you can stay on it and check out on Saturday morning), which gives six days of glorious sailing.
Today we’ll hopefully avoid the Vikings as we beat our way south west down to Arran, or, more specifically, the cute town of Lamlash on its east coast. The wind will be hitting you square on the face as we tacking our way up the prevailing summer winds.
Lamlash is the biggest village on Arran (which gives you an idea of the size of the others) and is notable for once being the training base of the Scottish Commando unit during WWII. The ‘Holy isle’ opposite was once the home of the hermit-monk Saint Molaise, who lived in a cave here. Amongst the more unusual stories about him (apart from living alone in a cave on an island in remote Scotland) is that he died after pulling out an eye-brow hair of Saint Sillan: anyone who saw the eye-brow hair would die instantly, so Saint Molaise;s selfless actions saved the rest of humanity. No, actually.
We’re headed around the coast and then hopping west to Campbeltown on the isle of Kintyre. You’ll likely have heard of the ‘Mull of Kintyre’ because ex-Beatle Paul McCartney had a big hit with a song of the same name in 1977 – he actually wrote the song when he was staying at his farm here (which he still owns today) after a messy break-up.
Campbeltown has 4,000 inhabitants, three whisky distilleries, plenty of shops and places to eat, and even a cinema, swimming pool, and its own airport. Obviously, you being sailors, you’ll know that Campbeltown was also the birthplace of Gerald Tait, who won a gold medal in Sailing at the 1908 Olympics (as part of a 10-man team in the 12-metre keelboat class).
The village here is reputed to have the least hours of sunshine anywhere in the UK (as it is on the north side of the mountain Goat Fell). There’s a ruined castle here to explore, where you’ll often find wild Red Deer, and nature lovers should also be able to spot Grey Seals, Otters and, if you’re lucky, Golden Eagles.
If you’re feeling energetic, you can hike up Goat Fell to get spectacular views of the whole cruising ground (you can even see Ireland some days), or if you’re not, you can head to the Arran Distillery and Visitor centre at the far end of the village, where you can see how they make their famous whisky, and give it a taste!
Tarbert was a location of strategic importance in these parts which is why find three castles here. It’s now most famous for selling the best seafood in Scotland (The Starfish restaurant is the best in Tarbert), including hosting a seafood festival each year. If you check you charts, you can see that the island is thinnest here – in 1098, Norwegian King Magnus Barefoot couldn’t be bothered wasting days sailing around Kintyre, so had his longboat carried across the 1 mile instead!
But we’re heading over Loch Fyne to finish the day in Portavadie, a multi-million pound marina development where you can pamper yourselves and enjoy the high life after all these days at sea. The marina is just part of a luxury development which includes brilliant toilet facilities, a fine restaurant, and a spa complex complete with an infinity pool with views back out over the water. Bliss!
The ‘Burnt islands’ at the top of Bute supposedly get their name because they were the place where Viking Kings were cremated back in the day. It seems an odd place to go for a royal funeral. We’re following the Kyles as we sail in pretty much every direction, before sailing onwards and upwards to Holy Loch for the night.
Holy Loch is so named because Saint Munn arrived and set up a monastery here in the 6th century (on the site where the church currently stands today). The church also has a mausoleum for the Clan Campbell (when the Dukes of Argyll used to reign over these lands), and Elizabeth Blackwell (the first woman to get a medical degree) is also buried here. Perhaps more unbelievably, this loch was also a US Naval base during for three decades (until the end of the Cold war).
And then we’re heading back down and past Largs town centre and to Largs marina. Don’t forget to head for fuel before you return the boat back where you found her, and moor her up for one last time. Hopefully you’ve had a fantastic week, the crew have all got on, and you’ve enjoyed sampling the best that Scotland has to offer, in terms of tranquillity, sailing, and whisky!
The restaurant and bar in the marina is great, but if you haven’t yet been to Largs, then it is worth a short stroll, and Nardini’s ice cream parlour there has been serving ice-creams and fish and chips for over 80 years! Enjoy reminiscing about this holiday over a glass or two of whisky, and head to PlainSailing.com when you want to start planning your next sailing adventure!
Sailing Conditions
The prevailing summer winds arrive from the south-west, and have travelled right over the Atlantic to greet you on your boat, and help you power yourself across the Clyde.
In spring and autumn (but to a much lesser extent in summer) then you can also get cold winds and weather systems arriving the north, so it is certainly worth checking the forecasts before you set sail.
If you sail outside of the Clyde area, then you will also need to start to think about tides, (but thankfully the area around Largs is relatively non-tidal).
Marina Details - Largs Yacht Haven
Largs Yacht Haven boasts a huge marina with over 700 berths and full support services - including a warm welcome at all hours of the day from their 24 hour staff. The marina is accessible regardless of tide and dry berthing is available. The fuel and waste disposal services are excellent and free wi-fi is available. There is a free car park just across the road to all berth holders.
If you need somewhere to stay before or after your charter, then we recommend the Brisbane House Hotel and Haven House Bed and Breakfast , both located in Largs.

Euroyachts are a long established boat sales and service company located in Scotland. We have bases in Largs Yacht Haven and Troon Yacht Haven. At Largs Marina we operate from the largest custom built boat sales Showroom in the UK. Our business was established in 1965 and we have been distributors for Jeanneau sailing and motorboats since 1978.
Ronnie and Angus Scott
Our name, and that of founder Ronnie Scott, has been at the forefront of pleasure craft retailing in the UK since the late sixties.
Ronnie Scott pioneered the use of indoor boat sales premises, part exchange and imported yachts for national distribution as early as 1962, with the still prolific East German Folkboat.
Since 1978 we have enjoyed a unique trading relationship with French builders Jeanneau , running the national distribution until 1993, and today are responsible for distribution in Scotland. Ronnie Scott’s son Angus worked in the business full time from 1981 until the company was sold to Yachts.co in October 2020. In his time in the business Angus ran the UK and Irish distribution of Jeanneau boats from our Hamble office between 1988 and 1992 and more recently was responsible for the development of our Largs Showroom. Angus Scott ran the business from 1994 to 2020.
Sailboat and powerboat sales in Scotland
Over the years we have been involved in the sale and distribution of products from a remarkable number of other leading European and North American builders.
In addition to domestic sales we have enjoyed success overseas, exporting regularly to the Far East and Mediterranean markets. We have commissioning bases in the South of France and have seen more than twenty new Jeanneau yachts, most above 40ft, being handed over in a single season
