Saudi prince MBS bought this $400 million megayacht from a Russian Oligarch and immediately kicked him out. The 439 feet long vessel has two helipads, a submarine, and a nightclub. The royal has also hung a $450M painting in it.
For the longest time, the whereabouts of this Leonardo Da Vinci masterpiece were a mystery. According to Al Jazeera , Mohammed bin Salman reportedly brought the painting and hung it on a cabin wall on the superyacht Serene. Both purchases together amount to over $1 billion. The painting meant to grace the Louvre Museum in Abu Dhabi never showed up at the scheduled events. This left people perplexed and wondering about the whereabouts of the expensive painting. All except one!

A Closer Look at the $330 Million Superyacht Serene
The Serene is one of the largest privately owned superyachts in the world. She is in the top ten with regard to the length, but it’s also among the most luxurious and extravagant vessels. The floating palace has accommodated some of the wealthiest people in the world. The estimated value of the Serene is $330 million, which also places it among the most expensive as well. She has an interesting story and has traded hands a couple of times. To fully grasp the magnificence of the luxury superyacht , we take a closer look at the elements that make it so special.
The building of the Serene
The Serene was commissioned by Yuri Shefler, who is a Russian vodka exportation magnate. The agreed-upon cost or the vessel was $330 million. He chose Italian Shipbuilders Fincantieri to complete the task, which was accomplished in August of 2011. The ship is classified as a Superyacht measuring 439 feet and 4 inches with a beam of 60 ft 8 inches and a draft of 18 ft and 1 inch. The gross tonnage is 8,231 tons and she is powered across with water by twin screw propulsion. The guest capacity is 24 with space to house a crew of up to 52. At the time of delivery, the Serene was the ninth largest superyacht in the world, but since that time, it has been replaced with larger vessels in this position and is now in the fifteenth position.
The history of the Serene
Yuri Shefler has entertained some of the wealthiest people in the world aboard the Serene. Bill Gates chartered the Serene for the cost of $5 million a week so he, Melinda and their three kids could enjoy some private family time together in August of 2014. They vacationed off of the coast of Porto Cervo, Sardinia, according to Boat International . This lavish yacht is the design of Espen Oeino, in charge of the exterior design, which offers a sleek profile. The interior is the creation of Reymond Langton Design.
Shefler was the first owner of the yacht, but he sold it to Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Saudi Arabian royalty in 2015 for the sum of 50 million Euros. Just two years after the purchase, there was an incident of concern involving the Serene. Due to propulsion failure and human error, the Serene ran aground in an area of the Red Sea notorious for shallow rock reefs. The hull at the bow was damaged requiring significant repairs. The incident took place in August.
The Serene was made available for charter by Shefler during the times that he wasn’t using it himself. This luxury yacht is absolutely packed with amenities. For starters, there is a helipad to allow guests to move to and from the yacht for land excursions as well as sightseeing from the air, or for going out for entertainment at some of the more exciting ports. For enjoying recreation in the water, there are also jet skis on board and there is also a submarine on board to get some fantastic views of the marine life and environment beneath the waves. This yacht is made for family fun for people of all ages. there is also a trans deck waterslide, a climbing wall, several swimming pools, a playroom, a snow room and a cinema for a night at the movies.
Adult amenities
The Serene is built with a total of six decks which allows for private times as well for group gatherings. There is a sun deck with a super large bathtub built in. The Serene also features an area that is designated as a private beach club, complete with a sauna and area for sunbathing. If you enjoy dancing there is also s sundeck dance floor, a wet bar, extra sun loungers, and two jacuzzis. There are also al fresco eating areas on the exterior. On the interior, the Serene features a Teppanyaki grill, a wood-fired pizza oven, a barbecue, and a wet bar. There is also an underwater observation lounge for relaxation and watching the marine life swim around the outside. For accommodations, the Serene has 12 staterooms, all designed for luxury living with a VIP Suite, a master suite, three twin cabins and seven double suites with room for up to 24. There is also a sky lounge and piano bar onboard with luxury furnishings for relaxation and cocktails. There is also a formal dining room with floor to ceiling windows placed in a manner that offers a panoramic view of the outside environment.
Final thoughts
The Serene is a privately owned yacht which has a major difference that sets it apart from most of the other superyachts in its category. This one has been offered for charter since the time of its purchase, off and one. Many of the other privately owned superyachts in its category are only available upon invitation, and the owners tend to be selective about who is invited to come aboard. This is good news for those who have the going rate of $5 million per week to pay the charter fee. The Serene is one of the most luxurious superyachts in operation with an onboard crew that ranges from 40 to 54 to meet your every need for great food and even formal dining, wet bar and cocktail lounge services, and plenty of activities to keep everyone in your party entertained and relaxed. What we found so incredible about this ship is that there is a little something for everyone, whether you’re into rock climbing, watching movies, playing water sports, swimming or going on an undersea adventure in the submarine that can dive up to 300 feet.

Construction started in mid 2006. The yacht was designed and constructed in compliance with the Lloyds Register technical standards. She was delivered to her owners in August 2011.
Exterior Design
Serene's graceful lines and subtle curves are harmoniously married into the blue hull and white superstructure, giving this grand vessel a svelte silhouette that belies her massive size.
Spread over seven decks, Serene presents a stunning display of proportionate design. The exterior spaces are crafted with meticulous attention to detail, serving a variety of purposes, from relaxation and entertainment to navigation and operational needs. Each deck is unique, featuring a range of facilities and amenities tailored to enhance the onboard experience.
The foredeck is a spacious, yet intimate seating area – a perfect spot for enjoying the open sea vistas. A large screen can be erected at the forward end of the helipad, creating a spectacular open-air cinema for a truly unforgettable movie night under the stars. The helicopter hangar, located in the bow, houses a Eurocopter 145, which is deployed via an elevator platform. The hatch doors above slide outboard to form the outer wings of the helipad, showcasing practical yet innovative design solutions.
The main deck aft is a hub of social activity, with two bars, seating areas, and informal tables surrounding the colossal glass doors that offer a captivating view down to the beach club. When closed, these doors double as a dance floor, adding a dynamic element to the entertainment possibilities. The entire area can be shaded by an awning, providing respite from the sun without compromising the breathtaking views. The upper decks are equally impressive. For instance, on deck five, the prime area for alfresco dining is equipped with a 20-place table, a bar, a barbecue, a pizza oven, and a teppanyaki grill – offering an unparalleled dining experience against the backdrop of the ocean. Aft on the bridge deck above, a circular pool surrounded by sun pads provides an idyllic spot for relaxation and sunbathing.
At the very top of Serene, a further plunge pool flanked by hot and cold spa pools offers a tranquil haven for guests to unwind, while enjoying panoramic views of their surroundings.
The Serene, with its impressive accommodation ability and attention to comfort and detail, is more than just a yacht - it is a floating luxury residence.
Interior Design
The interior, crafted by the renowned Reymond Langton Design, beautifully combines contemporary elements with influences of Art Deco, creating an environment that is both sophisticated and inviting. Central to the interior design is a grand spiral staircase that ascends through six decks. This architectural marvel is bathed in natural light from a large skylight at the top, with glass segments at every landing ensuring that light permeates throughout the yacht. Each deck features elegant foyers that lead to their respective spaces, with a delightful guest lift offering an alternative mode of transportation. The grand entrance at the aft end of decks two and three sets the tone for the lavish experience that awaits on board Serene. A formal dining room on the main deck is paired with a cocktail lounge featuring a grand piano, connected by two sweeping staircases and a large opening in the ceiling, exuding an air of refined elegance. The master suites on deck five offer spacious rooms with private terraces and a spa pool in the deck pod for unparalleled indulgence. An aft salon, a study, and a circular library/cigar room with leather armchairs and a real log fire further add to the opulence of this deck. Deck two is home to an impressive guest corridor that bisects the upper level of the engine room, offering a fascinating view of the immaculate mechanical spaces. Here, guests can also find the main aft garage that houses an extensive collection of tenders and a Nautilus diving support system. The most spectacular area of this deck, however, is the aftermost section that houses the beach club. This space is centered around a 15-meter pool, surrounded by several seating areas, and flanked by shell doors that open to balconies on the sea. The stern door opens to transform the pool into an inboard dock for the tenders, a feature that represents one of the most technologically complex areas of any yacht. The guest galley on deck two encourages interaction with the chef and crew, offering a unique culinary experience. The main deck aft and the upper levels provide ample open deck spaces for alfresco dining, lounging, and sunbathing. The top deck features a plunge pool flanked by hot and cold spa pools, offering breathtaking panoramic views. The crowning jewel of Serene's interior design, however, is the Nemo room. Located in the double bottom deck, this cozy space is finished in copper plate, complete with giant rivets, and offers a view of the underwater world through two large glass windows in the ice-classed hull.
Accommodation
Serene features 12 opulent suites, each elegantly designed, allowing for a party of up to 24 guests. Every suite comes with ensuite bath or shower rooms, with many offering spectacular views from their bathtubs, thereby providing an exceptional experience of luxury and comfort to every guest on board.
The yacht's master suites, located on deck five, are spacious, with the forward master suite featuring a private terrace. This private space provides a wonderful sense of indulgence and exclusivity. In addition, for those seeking a unique and exclusive sleeping experience, Serene also offers a contemporary Balinese-style sea cabin, located on deck two. This cabin is designed to provide a comfortable space for guests, particularly when the yacht is on passage.
Serene's guest accommodation also extends to its crew. With the same attention to detail and comfort, the yacht ensures that the crew of up to 62 has a comfortable and functional space to rest and recharge.
Performance & Capabilities
Serene operates on a diesel-electric drive, with eight NITU generators supplying power for both propulsion and domestic systems. The main drive is delivered through fixed shafts and variable pitch propellers, ensuring a smooth and efficient journey. Serene is capable of reaching a top speed of 25 knots, and comfortably cruises at 15 knots. She has a maximum range of 6,000 nautical miles at 15 knots.
In addition to the main drive system, Serene is also equipped with stern and forward thrusters that aid in maneuvering the yacht. This feature ensures the vessel's agility and responsiveness in various sea conditions, making it easy for the captain to navigate through tight spaces or strong currents.
One of the remarkable features of Serene is her full dynamic positioning system. This advanced technology allows the yacht to maintain its position without anchoring, using its own propellers and thrusters. It offers great convenience when anchoring is not feasible or during delicate operations such as diving or submarine deployment.
Serene's stabilizers play a crucial role in ensuring the comfort of those on board. These systems are designed to reduce the roll motion effect, providing a smoother and more enjoyable experience for guests. Whether at anchor or underway, the stabilizers work to maintain the yacht's balance and stability, making it a comfortable home at sea.
There is a state-of-the-art gymnasium and a fully equipped hair salon. A spa on the starboard features his-and-hers changing rooms, a hammam, massage room, and a sauna that overlooks a large shell door, transforming into a beach platform on the water. There is also a unique snow room, capable of creating wintry conditions for an authentic spa experience.

How did they do it?
The keel of Serene was laid on 2 March 2007, and she set sail on 15 August 2011. This marked a build time of 4 years and 5 months. This project was the first superyacht venture for Fincantieri, usually known for their experience in commercial & naval shipbuilding.
Challenges:
Translating commercial shipbuilding expertise to luxury yacht standards
Ensuring security & confidentiality during the build
Achieving the perfect balance between technical complexity and elegant looks
Fincantieri brought in top contractors and equipment, ensuring every bolt and component met exacting standards. The build saw six interior fit-out companies contribute, all carefully selected for their proven track record.
The technical office at Fincantieri executed three months of FEM analysis to engineer the structure around the yacht’s 11 hull openings. This received approval from Lloyd's without any limitations.
